Before Ken Burns, Glory, and Gettysburg, the Civil War proved an effective backdrop for this 1982 miniseries--available complete and uncut on this three-disc set--about two families divided by the War Between the States. John Hammond stars as John Geyser, a Southerner caught "betwixt and between" when he becomes a war correspondent for the Northern newspaper published by his uncle. Like a Civil War-era Forrest Gump, he finds himself "where history's in the making," from the Battle of Bull Run to the scene of President Abraham Lincoln's assassination. Stacy Keach costars as an Army scout who takes the "fresh off the farm" Geyser under his wing. Julia Duffy is the schoolmarm who loves Keach. The ham-handed dialogue is a guilty pleasure ("What's wrong with this land that produces such a bitter fruit?" asks the embittered Geyser). The meticulously mounted battle scenes, though, are a Civil War reenactor's dream. --Donald Liebenson

Made in 1929, Hallelujah is an artifact of no small historical significance: the first major studio movie with an all-black cast and a white director (the esteemed King Vidor), it was also one of the earliest "talkies" after the silent film era. But it also has considerable artistic merit; simply put, Hallelujah is damned entertaining. Sure, the story isn't exactly subtle, a morality tale chronicling the tribulations of Zeke (Daniel L. Haynes), a poor cotton farmer who, succumbing to the carnal charms of the sexy Chick (Nina Mae McKinney, who was sometimes known as "the black Garbo"), finds himself caught up in a soul-scarring cycle of sin and salvation. There's also some painful dialogue of the "Where is you gwine?" and "Honey, I likes anything you's got!" variety. But the major themes presented here--temptation and transgression, redemption and repentance--are pure and universal, the dancing and singing (including two songs by Irving Berlin) are marvelous, and there are several scenes of extraordinary intensity. Those include Zeke's family's weeping, wailing response to the tragic death of his younger brother, followed by the repentant Zeke's turning to God, a sequence in which he's transformed into a latter day Martin Luther King, Jr., preaching with rhythms and cadences of hypnotic power. DVD extras include audio commentary by historian Donald Bogle, plus two shorts ("Pie, Pie Blackbird" and "The Black Network") featuring McKinney's singing, Eubie Blake's music, and the Nicholas Brothers' dance moves. A final note: Victoria Spivey, who portrays Missy Rose, the down home girl devoted to Zeke, was also one of the finest blues singers of the time. When she underwent a career revival in the early 1960s, she formed a record label whose first recording featured accompaniment by none other than Bob Dylan. --Sam Graham

Description

Hallelujah is a cinematic milestone: the first all-black feature from a major studio and famed director King Vidor's (The Champ, The Big Parade) first talkie. But the film surpasses its historical significance, telling a story of such profound dignity and understanding that it as fresh and moving as the day it premiered. Featuring a largely unknown cast and infused with spirituals, folk songs, blues and jazz (Irving Berlin provided two songs for the production), Hallelujah follows the fortunes of Zeke (Daniel L. Haynes), a poor cotton farmer. He succumbs to the temptations of Chick (Nina Mae McKinney), a mercenary honky-tonk girl, finds salvation in religion, and falls again when his obsession for Chick overpowers his better self. Love, loss, passion, redemption and brilliant moviemaking: Hallelujah has it all.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hallelujah!.......2007-06-20

Warner Home Video wisely places an opening disclaimer on this 75 year old chestnut, acknowledging that the portrayal of blacks is of its own time, and inevitably reflects some outdated racial stereotypes. This is simply for context, and should not discourage game viewers from staying put. "Hallelujah!" is a fascinating sociological document, and a deftly executed early talkie that tells a universal human story. We get a rare, tantalizing glimpse of Nina Mae McKinney, a charismatic singer/entertainer who enjoyed considerable success off-screen. The spiritual-style music is also first-rate, with two songs contributed by Irving Berlin.

2 out of 5 stars A Little Archaic, Hard to Watch.......2007-05-14

I have watched several movies, all from Amazon, that could be in this same category: "Green Pastures" - one of our family's all time favorites; "Purlie Victorious" - not a great movie, but a lot of fun and causing us to buy these other movies; "Cabin in the Sky" - looked to be a lot of fun, with a famous cast, but the apparently defective DVD would run about fifteen minutes and then just lock up and finally fail. Next time it would play through the failure point and fail somewhere else, enough that we finally had to give up.

This brings me to Hallelujah, which is the earliest of all these movies. This also failed similar to "Cabin", but less often, so we were able to watch it through. It appears to be of historical interest and reminds me of movies, perhaps themselves old at that time, that I saw on TV over fifty years ago when a child.

Does this movie depict early black culture more accurately than do today's movies about the same period? I suppose in some ways it might, since it was made closer to the times it depicts. In other ways it probably does not, probably because the people of that time, whether blak or white, did not have the time or wherewithal to really understand what was strong or weak about the black culture in America.

There are certainly depictions that our modern American culture would see as demeaning or disrespectful, more so in this movie than the others mentioned above. Maybe there were enough of these that it was just kind of tiring and wearing to watch for me. I don't know that I learned a lot of historical interest, either. The movie is pretty primitive, and the plot utterly predictable. I suppose it would be of interest to students of film history.

I can't really recommend Hallelujah, but don't let that stop you from seeing "Purlie" or "Cabin", assuming the latter DVD will play for you. It makes me feel good about being human every time I watch it.

5 out of 5 stars American Realism and the Prodigal Son Revisited.......2007-04-26

Religion vs Christ (it's not what you know, but Whom you know)

I'm amazed I had'nt seen this great King Vidor film before. Absent from most lists of 100 best films I've seen, I hardly knew it existed. The American social drama was exposed by Vidor as nobody else could (comparable only to Ford's 'The Grapes of Wrath' and few others). Lots of things happen here, but it's not to be told, it's to be watched and felt personally. But to me the theme is very spiritual: How real sin is. How some people will blind themselves to its evil nature ("For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God." 1 Cor. 1:18), like the drunk who denies his alcoholism; and how others will struggle and stumble but eventually -God willing- they will repent and be saved.

People may say this film is about social conditions, poverty, injustice, religious fanaticism, racism, whatever. But it's about none of those (because all those don't matter). This is about choice.

It's also the story of the prodigal son, retold, the Black American way. A biblical story that is always true, no matter when or where it happened. And as all biblical stories it's there for us to learn from them. And we'll have learned when we have acted upon it. A beautiful film, a wonderful story, and a knock on your door.

5 out of 5 stars King Vidor's first talkie is a great story of human redemption.......2006-12-24

This early talkie was advertised as being a musical even though it is actually a drama with some very good musical numbers included. The movie was set and filmed in Memphis with an all black cast and directed by King Vidor. In fact, this is King Vidor's first talking picture. By today's standards, it overflows with stereotypes. Yet, as Warner says in its disclaimer, these images should be kept alive rather than hidden away so that we may learn from them. By the standards of 1929, Vidor was actually sympathetic in his treatment of the characters considering the times. If you want to see really horrific jaw-dropping stereotypes, go watch the best picture of 1930-1, "Cimarron". It is not at all atypical of what went on in motion pictures in those days in how African Americans were portrayed. Apparently King Vidor was quite insistent on not giving in to these commonly accepted stereotypes as much as was possible in the late 1920's, since he even agreed to direct the film for free in order to tell the story he wanted to tell the way he wanted to tell it. This film is actually not about race at all. Instead Vidor intended it to be a look into rural African American culture as he observed it growing up in the South himself set within the context of a morality play.

The plot is this - A family of sharecroppers, the Johnsons, have just finished harvesting the year's cotton crop. Being the oldest son, Zeke (Daniel L. Haynes) is responsible for selling the crop at market. Younger brother Spunk (Everett McGarrity) tags along. Zeke does as he is instructed, and gets good money in return for the family's cotton. However, things go wrong when Zeke is tempted by beautiful grifter Chick (Nina Mae McKinney) before he can return home with the cash. She and her partner "Hot Shot" procede to cheat Zeke out of his money. Zeke reacts violently when he discovers that he has been had both romantically - hurting his pride, and financially - hurting his entire family. Violence begets violence, and a tragedy ensues that brings about Zeke's religious conversion. He becomes a preacher, and takes up with a girl that is on the straight and narrow, much to the approval of his parents, his own father being a preacher himself. However, Chick soon returns to Zeke's life, at first mocking his conversion, then experiencing conversion herself while listening to Zeke preach. However, it seems Chick is just born to be bad. She tempts Zeke away from his devout girlfriend and his preaching, and eventually leads him to tragedy once again. After Zeke finishes his prison sentence for the violence he has wrought, he is seen being welcomed back into the loving arms of his family - a prodigal son returning.

Although the movie does give us a rare glimpse into Black culture in the south during the early twentieth century, the story being told transcends race and time. It has much to say about how men and women of the cloth are only human and religious conversion often has only a temporary effect on changing a person's behavior when it comes to the temptations of everyday life. Extras include commentary by black cultural scholars Donald Bogle and Avery Clayton and there are two musical numbers sung by Nina Mae McKinney. One is "Pie, Pie Blackbird" and the other is "The Black Network". These two musical numbers have nothing to do with the film. The only connection to "Hallelujah" is that the featured performer just happens to be one of the leads in this movie. Finally there are some theatrical trailers for the film.

Amazing! Simply amazing! Excellent cast...made for TV, but info was outstanding and true to life (I'm a college history major). My children loved it!

1 out of 5 stars It was decent until the main character killed Federal soldiers.......2007-03-19

It was decent until the main character killed Federal soldiers, that was unexcusable. Notice to all producers: Make more Civil War movies! There is a shortage of good ones!

5 out of 5 stars The Blue and the Gray.......2007-01-28

An absolute must for the Civil War buff or someone wanting to enjoy a great movie. I liked it so much I bought a copy for my son.

Enjoy!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not very realistic.......2006-08-19

A good miniserie but we could regret a lack of historical reality, i.e it is a story with the civil war as a background (only some aspects : not a word about Robert E. Lee, about slavery...), and not the civil war history lived by some characters. I would recomend to watch "North and South" which, despite a very much romanced story, has a much stronger historical background.

3 out of 5 stars Flawed But Worthy.......2006-07-05

I've never seen "The Blue and the Gray" miniseries until now- and I'm 52 years old (better late than never!). Overall it was very enjoyable. The costumes were great- although I too noticed that the hair styles were often modern. I'm a descendent of 20 Civil War soldiers (both sides)-so I have a particular interest in the period. Of course, I loved the miltary scenes- which were done well. The historical sequences were not always accurate- but that was okay too. The series was loaded with stars- many of whom are now passed away. Gregory Peck was great as Lincoln. However, I have to say that I thought some of the acting of others seemed sub par. At times, I felt like I was watching a high school play. There were too many predictable elements as well- you just knew that Julia Duffy's character was going to die. In summary, it is worth watching despite some of the things mentioned.

Description

Spring, 1864. The air is filled with exploding gunfire and the awful sounds of men collapsing in agony as they march forward into Hell. Relive the most vicious fighting of the Civil War, in which General Ulysses S. Grant forcibly reversed the tide of the conflict by paying with the blood of thousands. It was a desperate time for the Union. For three bloody years and despite their greater numbers, the troops had frequently been outmatched by the brilliant strategies of the Confederate leader, General Robert E. Lee. As General Ulysses S. Grant took charge of the Army of the Potomac that spring, he was determined to gain the upper hand in the war once and for all - no matter what the cost. Grant's relentless tactics led to furious clashes, including the Battle of the Wilderness, the Battle at Laura Hill and the fighting at the Mule Shoe and Cold Harbor. In a few short weeks, Grant sacrificed 50,000 men, more Americans than were lost during the entire Vietnam War. But his brutal strategies worked. By the time of Lee's surrender a year later, his own army of 60,000 had been decimated, reduced to a mere 7,500. These crucial weeks are authentically dramatized, using over 10,000 Civil War re-enactors, 2,000 horses, 50 cannons and heart-rending text from letters of those who were there. Filmed on hallowed ground and with riveting commentary by author Jeff Shaara (Gods and Generals) and noted Civil War expert, Edwin C. Bearss, it's a chillingly realistic experience of the final, desperate hours between North and South.

This was dissapointing for me. The commentary is very good, but the battle scenes were not that great in my opinion. It could be I was spoiled after watching "The American Civil War: A Union Divided" which I thought was FAR better

This documentary was well organized and properly displayed. The battle summaries were startling. It brought the reality of war into perspective. The Killing Fields is a must for any Civil War enthusiast.

I agree with the other reviewers, my only complaint is with the quality of the dvd. It is overly dark in some scenes, and the sound at times is hard to hear. Over all it is worth purchasing when you consider the price. The film contains stock footage from several Paramount movies including the Gary Cooper version entitled Fighting Caravans.

5 out of 5 stars Wagon Train, Indians, Randolf Scott.......2001-01-02

Great wagon train epic. Randolph Scott gets great support from many fine actors including sidekicks Raymond Hatton and Olin Howland. Fantastic theme song that will stick in your mind for days. A woman hating scout (Scott) and his two sidekicks lead a wagon train of easterners into Indian country. Major action scenes, pictures of the majestic wagons, romance, and Monte Blue as a half-breed villain you'll not soon forget. This is one you'll watch again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Wagon Wheels - A Great Western from 1934.......1999-12-29

A well made film from 1934, this movie has everything a good western should have: a good guy wearing the white hat and a bad guy wearing the black, chivalry, campfire songs, humor, and a great cowboys v. indians shootout. This movie was ahead of it's time in 1934, and a pioneer to great westerns and action films that followed. This is a classic that was influential and should not be forgotten.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good miniseries. I liked it........2007-01-29

I liked this miniseries. I remember the making of this back in the early '80's. I am from Arkansas and the entire show was filmed in Arkansas. I recognize a lot of Arkansas people in the background behind the real actors. For instance, the University of Arkansas Athletic Director and former Razorback football coach, Frank Broyles, is the doctor who pronounces Lincoln dead near the end. Also, a Little Rock TV reporter, Chuck Dovish, played the part of the injured soldier that John Geyser's girlfriend helped at Bull Run. He the one who says "God bless you, miss." My uncle was an extra in the movie too. He is the tall, skinny soldier who stumbles as he gets up off the ground in the prison scene near the end when the John Geyser tries to get his brother, Luke, out of prison. Yep, that's my Uncle Milton! I liked the show, although it was a bit unbelievable at times. Let's face it, John Geyser couldn't be at Gettysburg and Vicksburg at the same time. Both happened at the same time in July of 1863. And, Lincoln didn't give his famous speech until later on in the Fall. He gave the speech months after Vicksburg had fallen. And, true, the hairstyles were very early '80's on many of the soldiers. They didn't spend as much time and money on facial hair as they did on Gettysburg years later. It was worth my money, just the same.

1 out of 5 stars WOW when they say Recut they really mean CUT.......2006-10-13

The Marketing of this DVD set is so deceiving. I was thrilled when I saw a new recut version, thinking that there would be deleted scenes, maybe an alterante ending, you know, all those extra goodies. They should have called this the CUT TO SHREDS VERSION because they lopped off two hours of footage and this version is just a chopped up MESS. I returned my set and I advise others to do so also

that statement is just as wrong as this cut up,watered down, recut of a great mini-series(i have reviewed it already). did anyone ask for this major foul-up of a cut.DON"T BY THIS MESS!!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars why did this cut down junk even get released.......2006-02-22

a stunning waste of a good movie. cut by some 2 hours or more this is just a pure waste of time and disc when the complete miniseries is out there to be had . this is just junk!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Can anyone explain.......2006-01-03

Was there a call for a reverse special edition of this great miniseries. Full screen, poor video and audio, and a hacked up story. The original uncut version is still available, so do not waste your money on this. There was no reason to cut up this miniseries. It was only 7 hours to start with, so it was not exactly bloated. Stay away from this version.

    Description

Fifteen years as an American History teacher honed Dave Mathews' desire to reveal our heritage as a chronicle of human achievement, sacrifice and suffering - human history with feelings and emotion. Eventually music became his favorite method of humanizing history. We are proud to have captured his talent in this DVD. The spectacular Civil War reenactment footage filmed with reenactors from around the country is combined with the original Civil War songs of Dave Mathews. His songs have captured the emotion of the Civil War in a way that will never be duplicated. These songs document factual events of the Civil War so it is a fabulous teaching tool and is used by many schools thoughout the US.   This recording features outstanding performances from Dave Mathews and the wonderful ensemble of talented musicians. The Civil War battle footage takes you into the heat of the action with incredible digital clarity reminiscent of the movies Glory and Gettysburg. Hear the thunder of battle in surround sound stereo.  Includes a special rendition of the "Southern Girl" by Susan Jacobson.

    Description

The sweeping epic of the largest battle ever fought on American soil emerges in GETTYSBURG: THE BOYS IN BLUE & GRAY. In mid-July 1863, Union Lt. Frank A. Haskell wrote a vivid account in a letter to his brother. The compelling words of Haskell and other soldiers on both sides re-create the action. Filmed in five states and in the Gettysburg National Military Park, the film includes seven full-scale battles and a stirring original soundtrack.

    2 out of 5 stars By Re-enactors, For Re-enactors.......2005-09-02

I wondered through the entirety of this documentary for whom it was created:

Anyone unfamiliar with the battle will find a pathetically acted, incoherent chain of events narrated in an archaic style of english which can be understood only with difficulty.

Anyone familiar with the battle will find a painful, if brave, attempt at acting glossed-over summaries of events, with narration policed from overly-familiar footnotes found in any two or three books on the subject.

Had I seen this documentary at any other time, I would have found it enormously frustrating to watch. But by coincidence, I began reading Stephen Sears' "Gettysburg" this week -- an excellent book which, like most detailed military historical writing, presents only clouded imagery for the mind's eye beyond the arrows and rectangles drawn on the maps.
I found this film a good complementary visual supplement to that reading. Here you can traverse the ground within the landscape and within the main formations. I find no other usefulness to this documentary.

Placed into uniform upon their terrain, the re-enactors do what they do best -- To *show* what these events looked like. If the film does little more than that, it also does nothing less.
In the end, the most appreciative audience for this film will be other re-enactors.

3 out of 5 stars Good history, horrible acting.......2005-03-01

It is a good summary of the battle at Gettysburg, with a description of each day's major events and some aftermath. However, the acting was horrible. PBS used historians who I would guess had never acted before. I give amateurs credit for having the guts to put on period costumes and attempt to portray historical figures but most of them were simply bad at it. However, a nice touch was a great-great-great-etc nephew of Confederate General George Pickett played Pickett in the movie. I also felt the battle scenes were well done although on a limited scale.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious, from a certain point of view.......2006-08-21

If you have any retail background or sales experience and can handle the overt bigotry and foul language, watch this movie. I can't remember the last time I laughed so strongly watching something. It's audacious, but that's a big part of its charm. How did I come upon this film? My sales manager let me borrow it. It's just that tuned into what the car business feels like at times - but, of course, is nowhere near an accurate representation of current practices... I hope.

5 out of 5 stars Better than it looks!.......2004-11-16

Great movie! I went in thinking it would be really stupid and came out laughing hard. I thought maybe it was just me, but even my friends loved it too. If you're in sales you'll really get a kick out of it - especially if you're in car sales!

It's well worth the money and it's one of those obscure titles that's a definite nugget.

4 out of 5 stars Too much cussing, but very accurate portrayal of car dealers.......2004-09-19

I have been a car salesman at a One-Price dealer for 11 years, and this DVD is very funny. The accuracy is pretty spot on for big cities in the old days of car selling. We all got a big kick out of some of the ridiculous stuff on here, as most of it is over the top, but some is very true.

There is an overuse of the F word, and a ridiculous ending, but overall a fun film for car guys. Some of the events are things that I have actually seen before except maybe being left out in the street with no pants after a test drive and subsequent sexual interlude with a beautiful woman...I wish...

      4 out of 5 stars I pretty agree w/ James D Fett.......2004-08-05

I think he managed to successfully summarize it...pretty descent flick until it hit it's crushindo...Should have left it like it was. It's almost as if they were trying to do a more exteme/exaggrated version of Glengarry Glenross...

3 out of 5 stars Decent movie until it degrades into a low-rent caper flick.......2004-06-20

Good writing, pacing, and direction. Suckers made me laugh out loud several times, and was a good movie on its own merit until the direction takes a left turn into Quentin Tarrantinoville. The movie would have been a lot better had they stuck to the salesman theme.
