If you thought The Recruit was full of surprises, Basic will spin your head around. Assuming that cleverness is its own reward, this military mystery shares many of The Recruit's strengths and weaknesses, offering multi-layered deception as its dramatic raison d'etre. Copping plenty of machismo attitude befitting a semi-effective thriller from Die Hard director John McTiernan, John Travolta stars as an ex-Army Ranger-turned-DEA agent, recruited by an Army investigator (Connie Nielsen) to solve the fratricide of a reviled Sergeant (Samuel L. Jackson) who was allegedly killed while commanding a Special Forces training mission in the hurricane-swept rainforests of Panama. Two survivors (Giovanni Ribisi in a showboat role, and Brian Van Holt) recall the ill-fated mission as the truth unfolds, Rashomon-style, in a series of repetitive flashbacks. Tricky enough to hold one's attention as it grows increasingly irrelevant, Basic is so enamored of its bogus ingenuity that its ultimate twist is a letdown. A second viewing might prove rewarding, if only to confirm that it all holds together. --Jeff Shannon

The controversial, Reagan-era invasion of Grenada by U.S. troops is, oddly enough, at the center of this initially interesting story of a seasoned Marine sergeant (Clint Eastwood) routinely insulted by younger officers for being a symbol of the war that America "lost" in Vietnam. Looking for both a victory and a little redemption, Eastwood's character trains a squadron of scrappy pups and turns them into fighting grunts, just in time to follow White House orders and take the little island. Marsha Mason plays Eastwood's love interest, and Mario Van Peebles is funny as an undisciplined con artist who joins Clint's men and finally catches the spirit after getting his butt kicked a few times. --Tom Keogh

Description

After serving in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Gunnery Sergeant Tom Highway finds himself with a collection of medals and no war to fight. Training a new group of Marines that are more green than mean, Highway complicates matters by attempting to reconcile with his former wife, Aggie. Rekindling the spark in his failed marriage won't be easy with a crisis brewing in Grenada and his pathetic platoon far from ready.

5 out of 5 stars Clint Eastwood & the old breed of Marines.......2007-05-13

This is a wonderful movie...showing the difference between the "old breed" and "new breed" of marines. I have seen this MANY times. I know some of the quotes by heart, and started using one of them from time to time.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2007-01-15

I bought this for my brother because he wanted it. We ended up watching it and I was really pulled into this movie. This is not your typical war movie, but more about how Clint transforms a bunch of poor soldiers into fighting men. A fine movie!

3 out of 5 stars It got me to join.......2006-11-12

"Heartbreak ridge," is one of those movies that I think turned into an unintentional recruiting movie. First off, for those true devil dogs, like me, you all recognize Eastwood's character of GySgt Highway as the epitomy of what Chesty Puller described as a Marine. How many marines have encountered Gunnys, Sergeant Majors, and First Sergeants that held the same attitude and mystique that Gunny Highway had? I mean, first off, a combat veterean who tells a POG (Marines will know that term) officer to go "F" himself, is the kind of NCO we wanted to follow. I know that when I first watched this movie, it made me want to join (which I did) and be just like Gunny Highway (which I didn't). For the people who see this movie and say it portrays the Corps in a negative light, go live with a Marine infantry unit, and you'll see how realistic it is. It may not be the best Marine Corps story (I save that for Jarhead), but its one of the best out there, better than Full Metal Jacket. I reccomend that all 0311 Marines, and really, any Marine, should add this to their "Must- Own" collection.

1 out of 5 stars Worst movie Eastwood ever made.......2006-09-17

This movie is so bad that even the Army, which supported it at first, withdrew there support. Eastwood's character started his career in the US Army during the Korean War where he fought in a battle later called "Heartbreak Ridge". The story line was so inept and the telling of the tale so bad that the Army withdrew its support in the production. The film company then had to rewrite to scipt so that Eastwood's character changes services and enlist in the USMC after the Korean War and fights in the Vietnam War.

So all of you "Leathernecks" looking for a "pride of the Corps" tale should pass, it isn't going to happen in this story. In fact, the movie takes pains to present the USMC in a very negative light. That the Corps continued to support this production reflects just how desperate it was for any mention from Hollywood.

The script is pathetic, the production weak, and the conclusion unsupportable. Send Hollywood a message and do not support this movie.

5 out of 5 stars "Shut your mouth, Hippie!".......2006-09-05

An excellent movie, Heartbreak Ridge, brings to the screen the story of a down-on-his-luck sergeant in the U.S. Marines who is given another chance/shot at what he loves the most: his job, his woman, and his men.
Clint Eastwood and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, it allows for a highly entertaining movie that can be watched over and over again!
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, and the humor, are all wonderful!
In short, Heartbreak Ridge is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection (if you haven't done so already)!

5 out of 5 stars SUPERB.......2007-06-06

This is the best pilates DVD I own. I love that there are modified workouts for beginners and beyond, you can start at the easiest workout and as your core becomes stronger & your balance improves you can move on to the more challenging workouts. Truly a great DVD, 100% better than Winsor, mostly because it's so adjustable and because it flows from one exercise to the next which doesn't waste time and it's how the exercises were meant to be performed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent directed workout.......2007-05-18

This DVD has several things going for it. The best is that it has different levels. As an I-can-do-anything guy, I naturally started out at the advanced level for a few days. But I was doing things with such poor form that I dropped down to the intermediate for a few days, and then finally to the basic level. After a few weeks with the basic level I went back to the intermediate level and it was a struggle to make it through the first few times, and didn't actually complete a couple of sets of the intermediate exercises. But then I ran into the idea that I only had only the time allotted during the exercise to get it done or the exercise wouldn't get done and with that thinking I was able to push through the pain. But of course I had been building up my abs doing the exercises and so my successful driving myself through the pain could also be attributed to that. I have not yet returned to the advanced, but I will after another month I suppose.

I use the DVD about five times a week and it is a great way to start the day. I use a firm black roll-up mat that is 3/8" thick and it is completely adequate for all the exercises.

To do a level you just put the DVD in and forward it to your level (intermediate is track 5, advanced is 6) and after about 30 seconds of talk while you get ready to start it begins. And the pace is good and 20 minutes later (if you are doing the intermediate) you are done. And when I am done I feel great, not tired at all, but rather full of energy. This is not to say that I don't feel significantly challenged during the exercises, because I am challenged.

I love it!

5 out of 5 stars Exactly What I Wanted.......2007-04-09

Skip the new age background music. I just want the exercises. This DVD offers a straighforward demonstration of the original exercises. It has the same exercises as my Gaiam DVD, but in a different order (I assume the intended original order), and they're done much faster on this classical DVD. The exercises are divided into 4 sections: Modified Basic, Basic, Intermediate, Advanced and Super Advanced.

This is not a DVD where you would follow along. I wrote down the exercises (they're so simple) and did them at my own pace, with my own music. Much better this way.

A workout that balances both the body and the mind can be found in the Basic Yoga Workout for Dummies. Fundamental postures are explained and demonstrated slowly with an emphasis on breathing and motion. Sara Ivanhoe teaches 12 basic poses that are termed the "daily dozen" and offers challenges and modifications to each of these moves. Ivanhoe presents these concepts in an approachable and calming manner that adds to the overall relaxed feeling that this session exudes. Newcomers to the practice of yoga will learn jargon, essential postures, and focusing techniques. Experienced participants may find some information redundant, but Ivanhoe offers such thorough explanations about each posture that you can't help but expand your existing knowledge of yoga. As the mountain pose, standing forward bend, and downward facing dog are explained (not to mention the nine other poses within the "daily dozen"), proper body alignment becomes the focus. Meticulous attention is given to the connection between breathing and body movement with several reminders to keep the spine in "neutral alignment." This session ranks great for safety and content and makes yoga accessible to anyone who "always wanted to, but never did." This is a substantial program that can introduce the basics and build your understanding of yoga. --Olivia Voigts

5 out of 5 stars Basic Yoga for dummies.......2007-06-25

I have been using this product for several years. It had been really helpful for me; because I have a back injury and this has alleviated some of my pain. The poses that Sara Ivanhoe demostrates can be modified for those of us who have little or no experience with yoga. Sara's instructions are not condescending or demeaning to the beginner. I highly recommend these poses to anyone who is starting out in yoga.

1 out of 5 stars Just plain awful for anyone.......2007-06-22

Things I liked: She's not half-naked so you can focus on what she's doing and not be worried she's going to fall out of her clothes any minute. There are a few (very few) split screens for showing modified poses. She explains form. She does each pose for the same length of time. It's not dubbed--she's speaking to you as she's doing the pose rather than dubbing it after it was filmed (which is awful).

Things I hated: SLOOOOOOW. Way too slow--even for beginners. We were completely bored through both sets. All of the poses are incredibly easy and alone are not enough to keep a person fit. Nauseatingly slow so you're very bored only 5 minutes into the program. Each pose is too long (6 long breaths). No free-flow vinyasa moving from one pose to the next in a routine, not even in the intermediate section. Each pose is disjointed and shown alone or with one other pose so that there really is not routine. It's not done as a class. There's a reason that most of the good yoga DVDs are done as classes--it flows, doesn't waste time, and the person at home can follow along watching different people get the pose right. I'd rather watch that than one person spend 10 minutes explaining one pose. Enough already, move on. There are irritating sirens, alarms, and obnoxious noises throughout the DVD to give it that "for dummies" alert which completely detracts from the relaxation of yoga (even in the intermediate section). Yoga was definitely not the right topic for a "Dummies" tape. There are also "for dummies" tests throughout the DVD, which are downright obnoxious. They're in the form of true/false questions given in the middle of each pose. (quite obnoxious).

I would not recommend this DVD to anyone. I'm not sure how Sara Ivanhoe got her reputation, but this is the third yoga DVD of hers that I've seen and I would never attend one of her classes. She's awful.

5 out of 5 stars Only exercise routine that has ever worked for this uncoordinated couch potato!.......2007-04-08

I admit it, I am a couch potato who spends most of her time on the computer, reading books, watching movies, or eating at restaurants with friends. I've hated exercising since childhood, since my nightmare days at gym class, where I simply could never keep up with what the other kids were doing.

In the back of my mind, I always knew I had to get in better shape, so I've tried a few things over the years: sports, running, working out at the gym, and other tapes (Taebo, Pilates, etc) but nothing ever worked. I would try them the a few times, and but quit soon because I could never do the moves properly, and/or I would just get tired but see no real benefit.

Over time, I realized that part of the problem is that I'm quite thin, so the real point of an exercise workout for me is not to loose weight (which many exercises today are geared towards) but gain strength. My sister suggested I try Yoga, as she says it had helped her tremendously with her strength.

I was quite skeptical, and put it her suggestion off for more than a year. Part of my fear was that yoga poses seemed very complicated, and I'd just never be able to do them. But after I started getting low back aches a few months ago (and I'm only in my 30s!) I knew I had to do something before my body started deteriorating! After careful research, I decided to go with Basic Yoga Workout for Dummies. After all, when it comes to workouts, I am definitely very much a dummy.

After working out with it for about a month, I must say, WOW! I can't be happier. Sara Ivanhoe presents in this video 12 beginner yoga poses designed to increase strength, flexibility, and improve relaxation, which was just what I wanted.

She starts with a detailed introduction on how to sit, and how to breathe, and then starts the routine. The poses are:

Cat Pose
Mountain Pose (basically a detailed explanation of standing!)
Standing Forward Bend
Lunge
Tree Pose
Standing Side Stretch Pose
Downward Facing Dog Pose
Cobra Pose
Child Pose
Seated Spinal Twist
Seated Forward Bend
Final Relaxation Pose

The best part for me is the slow, calm detailed way Ivanhoe explains the poses, in a non-condescending manner. I really get the message that I'm really working out my own pace.

Those who have more experience with Yoga, (or those who are not dummies when it comes to workouts and can pick up moves quickly) may find her detailed explanations boring, and wished the workout moved more quickly. However, I'm still struggling with the moves, and I am constantly learning new things from her detailed explanations. For example, in Mountain Pose, I just found out yesterday what it really means to stand with my weight centered on my feet, with thighs tight and drawn-up, belly in and tail bone down All these years, I've beens standing with my weight centered way back on my heels, belly out- a very unstable way to stand.

Even though I know I am not doing each pose perfectly, I know I am still gaining a tremendous amount of benefit in terms of strength and flexibility. I love that my body is learning every day (shall we say its actually getting smarter?) and is now starting to tell me when I am doing the positions wrong! As an added bonus, I feel calm, relaxed, and clear after the workout, which often continues into the next day.

As the other reviewers mentioned, the 'dummy' icons popping up in the middle of the performance are a tad annoying- the video would be better if they were not there. But I find I can tune them out, and its a small price to pay for having an workout routine that actually works for me.

I knew this tape was a winner when actually I WANTED to work out with it. This was a new experience for me - actually wanting to exercise? Regularly?! Basic Yoga Workout for Dummies has made it happen.

5 out of 5 stars great way to start.......2007-04-01

I used this video to learn the poses and get into the yoga atmosphere. It is a great dvd. No need to do the watch it first then do it practice, it provides enough time to be able to do it the very first time you watch it. Plus, once you get good they also have a few intermediate excercises on this dvd so you can work on those and not get bored. :-)

4 out of 5 stars Great for Learning Basic Poses.......2007-01-15

For those of you looking for a clear, calm, and nurturing introduction to yoga poses, this is an excellent DVD. Sara Ivanhoe is soothing and straightforward in how she teaches and enlightens.

Beware, however, of the sound effects for the "Dummies" series icons that pop up and seem to go against the grain of yoga being this peaceful mind, body spirit meld. For example, you'll be getting into a pose when suddenly you hear "doinnnnggggg" alerting you to the "myths surrounding" yoga and other tips. It's something I just endured since this is part of the "yadda, yadda for Dummies," way. If that freaks you out, then this isn't the starter tape for you...just be forewarned. I didn't find it as hateful as some because I knew I was learning poses, not hoping to levitate.

Also, if you're interested in a non-stop yoga fitness regime, buy an alternative DVD to have on hand once you have a better idea of what yoga is all about. In that case, the title should maybe be changed to reflect what it really is "Basic Yoga POSES for Dummies.

That having been said, I was relatively new to yoga and I didn't mind the pace of this introductory DVD at all, but I have since purchased a different DVD that puts all of the moves together.

Peace.

4 out of 5 stars Follow your instinct..........2007-07-03

After years and years of hearing about this movie, I recently purchased it at a local Wal*Mart. Let me say this, do not underestimate this movie!

Although it may not be as shocking or cutting-edge as it was back in the day; this movie still provides a lot of substance from the original intention. The acting is superb. There is honest chemistry between Douglas and Stone; each play off of each other's strengths making it come off as genuine and not forced at all. The supporting characters also add essential realism and help develop the story even further. Within the characters, each has their own distinct personality and the viewer gets to know them pretty well by the end of the story. The characters are dramactic when called for, but also provide subtle comic relief when needed as well.

The directing however, is what makes this movie so well good. Everything from the script (kept relatively in its original form) all the way to the lighting and the way that affects how the viewer reacts to certain scenes. As for the nude/sex scenes; I believe they were done in a way that enhances the story and/or develops the characters further; not done just for the sake of doing them.

As I mentioned don't let this movie fool you. It is very well crafted and provides some good suspense and entertainment. After years of avoiding it, I'm glad I finally own it!

5 out of 5 stars outrageous.......2007-04-05

It is a outrageous film. Sharon Stone is simply exotic. The argument is good. The photography excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Sharon Stone is so confident in her character as Catherine Trammel in this film..........2007-03-20

Sharon Stone is so confident in her character as Catherine Trammel in this film, and portrays some of the best sex and orgasm I've seen in a blockbuster movie before. It is fun to see all the explicit scenes of sex, nudity and violence all rolled into one movie. The story unravels with perfect rhythm, keeping your senses titillated all along the way. It is timeless in its' plot, the murder mystery that even at the end never seems to be solved completely. The viewer is left seduced, allured, and looking back on the different scenes and characters trying to figure out exactly what just happened.

Michael Douglas does a terrific job in his role as detective Nick Curran. He's on top of his game one moment, and the next completely clueless, giving in to the pleasures of drinking and smoking after months of sobriety.

4 out of 5 stars "Ice pick" me, please!.......2007-03-07

Sharon Stone in one of her better roles! Her underlying coldness as Catherine Trammel surfaces between scenes where she makes you empathetic, particularly when she wants you to think she's vulnerable.

But underneath that calm and calculating mind is a suspected pathological killer and writer, plus bisexual to boot!

I enjoyed the scenes of what was suggestive of San Francisco, but have a hard time figuring how Michael Douglas' character as Nick always seems to find a convenient parking spot in front of his building! If you've ever been to the foggy city, you know that's a rare. Adding to the confusion is the scene at the dance club, which is a replica of New York's Limelight Club set in a church...what the heck is that doing is SF?

I did find the sets of Trammel's homes to be quite accurate. The Divisadero mansion is something you'd expect to find in that area. The seaside home though was actually filmed on location in Carmel, even though it was suppose to suggest Marin. Aside from that, if you didn't realize that fact, you would have never thought otherwise (except some areas of Marin are not close to water).

The ending fades that happened several times was annoying, but it did keep you guessing...was she really the murderess or not?

The Ultimate Edition that is unrated shows a tad more nudity, particularly in Michael Douglas' case, but overall adds nothing too significant to the storyline.

Wouldn't it be better to see more of Stone and the infamous interview process? That in itself is the gem of the movie.

4 out of 5 stars A good thriller with a lot of sex scenes.......2007-02-17

This film keeps you on your tows from the start. It does start with an interesting, very explicit bedroom scene, with an unexpected twist at the end. What follows is one of the best detective stories in recent years, with a loot of humour and plenty of sex, for which the film is really famous for. Sharon Stone makes quite an appearance, dressed or undressed, but either she, or the director of the film, or both, seem to have a fixation on smoking to an irritating degree. Now as to the director's cut, I am not so sure that it adds much over the previous ten-year anniversary two disc edition. It is certainly worth watching and at its present price, a real bargain. If you are thinking of buying the sequel, don't bother. It does not even come close to the original.

Description

Michael Douglas stars as Nick Curran, a tough but vulnerable detective. Sharon Stone costars as Catherine Tramell, a cold, calculating and beautiful novelist with an insatiable sexual appetite. Catherine becomes a prime suspect when her boyfriend is brutally murdered - a crime she described in her latest novel. Obsessed with cracking the case, Nick descends into San Francisco's forbidden underground where suspicions mount, bodies fall and he finds within himself an instinct more basic than survival.

4 out of 5 stars Next-gen smut.......2007-06-28

I had this classic on DVD, but I had to update of course. Michael Douglas's higher resolution middle-aged assets and Sharon Stone's younger assets are all on display in fine 1080p, complete with wrinkles and imperfections. Very fun movie still after 15 years. Can we say that about the stars' assets in 2007, though? The movie could look sharper, but there's only so much you can do with a movie from 1992.

The DTS HD audio track is excellent. All the moans, gasps, and curses are in a better bitrate (I guess?). The extras are in standard definition, I believe, but it's no big deal. Never watched them anyway.

Now bring on Showgirls, MGM!

3 out of 5 stars Overrated.......2007-06-12

Basic Instinct is a beautifully created film with a compelling story with enough twists and psychological bends to captivate you. Yet the sotry is bogged down with gratuitous sexual encounters that do not propel anywhere. The acting of Michael Douglas in this film was distractingly bad. He was pissed off throughout the film for no apparent reason, even in the love scenes. Sharon Stone player her character very well, a cold, manipulating and very attractive woman. Of course there isn't very many scenes without her exposing herself. The movie seems to rest on her nudity, not her acting. Overall, the movie seems to elevate the gratuitous sex over the actual plot. So while I was being drawn into the story, the movie also pulled me away from it leaving me desiring more form the story.

5 out of 5 stars BASIC INSTINCT A MUST HAVE ON BLU-RAY DISC.......2007-06-01

Basic Instinct has been released several times on DVD, but this is the first incarnation on High Definition disc. This BLU-RAY disc will probably be the best presentation of this film on video. Director Paul Verhoeven's raw, sexy, gory thriller is his best American film. The beautiful Sharon Stone gives her finest performance, and Michael Douglas, Jean Tripplehorn, George Dzundza are excellent. Composer Jerry Goldsmith contributes a magnificent score.

Only available on BLU-RAY HD with great picture and sound this disc is a knockout!

Bill Murray was heading toward a career peak on the back of comedies such as this one from 1981, the second film in his ongoing collaboration with director Ivan Reitman (the two went on to make Ghostbusters). Murray plays a chronic loser who joins the army and fails to find a fan for his ironic sensibilities in his by-the-book sergeant (Warren Oates). When push comes to shove, however, the smirking hero takes charge of his ragtag unit and turns them into fighting machines, albeit to the rhythm of hit songs by Manfred Mann and Sly Stone. The film is occasionally funny, but it mostly plays like any one of a dozen underachieving comedies featuring players from Saturday Night Live and SCTV. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars Extended Cut should have been..........2007-05-30

There is no denying Stripes as a classic from my (insert age now) youth. And, sans the additional scenes, it is still an all-time favorite. However, I just can't get my arms around those extended scenes. The fact that a little warning is telling me throughout that "the director feels these scenes were superfluous, and a waste of your time" (my quotation marks) really doesn't help matters. Buy Stripes if you don't already own it. But, don't buy it for the extra scenes...

I love this movie, but I am extremely disappointed with this unrated release. The first problem is that even though you can watch the theatrical version of the film, where ever the added scenes were put in there is a slight pause before going to the next scene! This is inexcusable and it distract the viewer every time it happens. The extra scenes are worthless so now either version is ruined. This should have been recalled. Great movie worthless DVD!

Not worth the extra added scenes plus they are explicitly marked as added scenes. Kinda cheesy. The good news is that the original movie can also be played. The movie is a 5+

Despite its inevitable fate as a critically reviled box-office flop, Basic Instinct 2 sure has a funny way of holding your attention. It's not just Sharon Stone's trash-talk and occasional nudity that keeps you watching, but also the way she gamely earns every cent of her $14 million paycheck, vamping like a real pro in her second outing as mystery novelist and alleged serial killer Catherine Tramell. Now living in London, Catherine sets her lethal sights on Michael Glass (David Morrissey), the control-freak psychiatrist assigned to evaluate her as a risk-addicted suspect in the "accidental" killing of a star soccer player. Turns out Catherine's just getting started (or is she?), and that's bad news for Glass's ex-wife, a tabloid journalist, and the Scotland Yard detective (David Thewlis) who's desperate to put Catherine in jail. With plenty of sex, murder and salacious dialogue, BI2 is certainly never boring, especially with the morbid fascination of seeing the once formidable Stone torpedo her career in a sequel that took 14 years (and countless drafts of screenplays and at least one high-profile lawsuit) to bring to the screen. She's still impressively hot at age 47, prompting critic Roger Ebert to observe, "the Catherine Tramell role cannot be played well, but Sharon Stone can play it badly better than any other actress alive." So, while this ill-fated sequel falls just short of being a guilty pleasure (if only because Morrissey is no match for Michael Douglas in the 1992 original), it's enjoyably absurd and slickly produced, and the hot-tub scene is guaranteed to wear out the freeze-frame function on a lot of DVD players. For some viewers, that's reason enough for multiple viewings.--Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Diarrhetic Pyschological Thriller.......2007-06-18

Basic Instinct 2 is directed by Michael Caton-Jones (This Boy's Life, Rob Roy). The original film was in my eyes a lot better than most even gave it credit for, but that movie was handled by hit or miss Director Paul Verhoeven. History suggests that Caton-Jones has consistently directed more quality films than Verhoeven. So the sequel, on the surface anyway, doesn't seem like such a bad idea despite it happening so many years later. There was something incredibly inviting about Sharon Stone's Catherine Trammel in the first movie. It was edgy and well done, which is a sum combination superior to the individual strengths. Many have suggested that this is the worst film of 2006 and I try hard to approach a viewing indifferent to such assertions. After all, people hailed Crash as the best film of 2005 and I didn't buy into that hype. I'm going with the sheep here though. Basic Instinct 2 is the worst film of 2006.

In a nutshell, we reconvene in London with Catherine Trammel as the film's protagonist. Catherine is suspected of playing some role in the death of her boyfriend who was apparently drugged before a fatal car crash into the ocean. After being released from the authorities she decides to hook up with a psychiatrist named Dr. Michael Glass (David Morrissey). The mind games, sexual tension and murder ensue.

The most important reason this film failed critically and only lasted about two weeks in American theaters is because of Sharon Stone's performance. It really pains me to say that. It is easy to target her age her but that is a slightly misguided criticism. Sharon looks great for her late 40s in my opinion but her performance suggests a lack of confidence in her own ability to be as sexual as Trammel was in 1992. First of all, it's not an easy task to duplicate that performance in the first place, but Stone's failure might expose her as a one-dimensional actress recycling a role she is no longer capable of delivering. It's not her looks that are not sexy; it's her attitude and her paper thin performance that lacks the confidence to be even remotely compelling. I would even propose that her performance affected the confidence of everyone working this film. It's entirely possible that the success of the movie depended on Sharon Stone almost exclusively. Being a huge fan of the first movie, I sincerely wanted her to pull it off. To Stone's credit, the task at hand was a difficult one.

Basic Instinct 2 also doesn't contain nearly the edge that the first film did. That isn't to say it was necessary to do so. In fact, some aspects of the first film could certainly be deemed gratuitous and this sequel is notably missing the copious amounts of nudity that the first film contained, for better or worse. Perhaps there was a conscious effort to be less gratuitous and there is of course some merit to that attempt. But they failed in not being gratuitous as well because the dialogue in this sequel is at times unnecessarily filthy. In fact, it seemed like someone intentional added sexual references to the end of some sentences just for the hell of it. The dialogue was also laughably bad at times and the actors of course struggled in delivering some lines convincingly.

The other big flaw is the story in general. It's not horrible, it's just too convoluted and the movie really dragged at times. To be blunt, it was really boring for the most part and just didn't hook me in. I love to recognize notoriously bad films that hook me in just for being so poor; like Mac and Me, Dungeons and Dragons, Plan 9 From Outer Space or Manos, but Basic Instinct 2 isn't even as memorable. It's bad like Gigli or Death to Smoochy was bad. It is forgetfully bad. I almost had to take notes just to recall some key points for this review.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first one but worth a look.......2007-05-15

I've always had a special place in my heart for the first Basic
Instinct movie. Back in the early 90s, you didn't have instant internet
access like you have today. So the easiest way for adolescent males to
look at naked female bodies was to head over to your local video store
and rent any one of the broad selection of outdated low budget
movies that were available to you. Needless to say those films were not
exactly top of the line material. But then came along Basic Instinct, a
film loved by male teens whose hormones were running amok, adults
looking for an exciting thriller, or just curious what all the fuzz was
about, and film critics alike. Basic Instinct was special because it
was not only sexually provocative (remember the interrogation and
bondage scenes) but also had a strong cast, a good storyline, well
developed characters, beautiful photography, fast cars and a nice
setting. It was a violent police thriller in which the central
character and main draw was a pantiless femme fatale with a taste for
all things extreme and directed by the accomplished Paul Verhoeven, a
Dutchman famous for making harsh films with a touch of sexual
provocation.
Fast forward to Basic Instinct 2. Whereas Catherine Tramell was the most intriguing figure in the first movie, she was surrounded by other equally well developed characters. Nick Kurran was the borderline cop, played by Michael Douglas, who became obsessed by the beautiful and dangerous Tramell, Jeanne Tripplehorn portrayed the jealous co-worker and Leilani Sarelle was Sharon Stone's lesbian love interest, which was pretty revolutionary in early 90s mainstream cinema.
The sequel shows Catherine Tramell living in London and that's about
it. Caught in her web this time around is Kevin Franks, played by Stan Collymore, a boring psychologist whose life is influenced by equally uninteresting women: the sexually unsatisfied ex-wife, a mother figure and mentor and some kind of love interest. I suspect the cliché London setting and subsequent cast of unknown actors was done for financial reasons. There is not a whole lot to say about the story. The movie starts off with a famous soccer player getting killed while he's making love to Catherine, who is doing 110 miles an hour in downtown London. Tramell is the main suspect and is persued by an overzealous police officer and defended by psychologist Franks who becomes obsessed with his hot patient.
The opening scene is immediately the most exciting sexual scene in the whole movie. There is one other where Collymore has sex with his would-be girlfriend but that's a poor reproduction of Michael Douglas letting his
suppressed sexual appetites rage havoc on Jeane Tripplehorn. The other
erotic scenes are pretty lame, especially after such extreme opening credits and taking into consideration Catherine Tramell's sexy outfits. Why would anyone want to go see an erotic thriller whose love scenes are tamer than a Britney Spears concert? Stil, Sharon Stone does look as beautiful and seductive as she did in the first film. However, whereas in the early 90s Catherine Tramell wore sexy outfits, made even more exciting because it was obvious she didn't wear anything underneath them, she was still pretty elegantly dressed. Her clothes in the sequel are designed for the sole purpose of turning men on. So all in all, I conclude that director Michael Caton-Jones has pretty much exploited the sexually provocative aspect of the first movie (but not in a very good way, unless the unrated version features a lot of spicy cut scenes) and neglected all of the other aspects that made Paul Verhoeven's film so special. Is it any coincidence he's since gone on to direct the critically acclaimed Blackbook and Basic Instinct 2 was nominated for worst film of 2006?
So, if you were an adolescent male in the early 90s, whose sexual fantasies where forever influenced by Miss Tramell or if you just like Sharon Stone, who looks as good as ever, go check this film out, even if it's just for nostalgia's sake. If it's an exciting crime story you're looking for, better go watch one of the other erotic thrillers Basic Instinct paved the way for, like Body of Evidence, Disclosure or Sliver.

3 out of 5 stars David Thewlis is all the money!.......2007-04-26

Basic Instinct 2 was a bit of a disappointment, considering the success of the first film and the presence of Sharon Stone and David Thewlis among others, though by no means is it a terrible movie.
Catherine Tramell is back only this time she's in England. The string of murders is not that far behind...
In short, the acting is pretty good (though nothing great), the setting is average, while the dialogues and the plot are below average.
The major setbacks are in relation to:
1) The rather weak plot and especially the weak dialogues, for which the writers are to blame. It gets to be quite slow and boring at times...
2) Indira Varma was not that great as Denise. Just as bad were the actors playing the minor roles.
3) When it comes to eroticism it doesn't really hit the mark like the original.
It seems as though the actors/directors/producers went to England on vacation separately. While there they met up with each other at the hotel lounge over drinks, and then decided, on the spot, to make the best of their stay by doing a quick and easy film on the side for some extra cash/spending money.
Though the potential for a good movie was definitely there it fails to take off, primarily due to the writers.
In a nutshell, it's an ok movie and that's about it; no masterpiece here...

3 out of 5 stars This "one of the WORST movie of the year" wasn't too bad.......2007-04-12

For some reason I can't totally dismiss the film. As unimaginative as it was, I still had a blast with it. Sharon Stone may be 48 but carries herself very well. I admire her for having the balls to try and pull this one off. And guess what? She kind of does and still has some sex appeal left even at nearly half a decade. Her voice is lower, she has to wear a lot of make-up, but Catherine Tramell is still in there begging to come out. She still looks better than half the stars in Hollywood half her age, and reigns as the "Queen of Mean" (maybe even more so after hearing what all she's done after being famous). Catherine's new fixation with auto-erotic asphyxiation is simply a vanity project for Stone which she holds on to very well.

As crazy as this sounds, I did have a hard time buying a shrink would fall for her. But then again in the first installment, why would a homicide detective? David Morrisey as Dr. Andrew Glass looks good, but at times would look sort of stiff in some of his frames looking like he was trying to get into character. David does all he can to make sure his character is more subtle than the cocksure Michael Douglas San Francisco detective from the original. It's a more restrained journey, but he's English and a psychologist. In a way it's a nice contrast to the first. I also wondered how in the world did they get Charlotte Rampling and David Thewlis? They both turn in their usual fine performances providing exactly what the script demands of them.

It very well may be a hoot to call it "the worst film of the year" or "top pick for a Razzie", but in the final analysis it mildly entertained me and kept my attention on other affairs. "Basic Instinct 2" is still a fun adult erotic thriller that is not as great as the first, but not nearly as bad as Stone's turn in the Halle Berry "Cat Woman" flick. Because at least there she looks good, and happy to be back on silver screen. You might still follow your instincts and try to not see/buy this disc but I would simply recommend this movie as a rental unless you really need this add-on to your collection.

1 out of 5 stars Sharon Stone is too old to be in this role.......2007-04-11

I watched 10 minutes of this movie and had to turn it off. Sharon Stone is just too old to be beliveable in this role. She still looks good for her age, thanks to the plastic surgery, but she's 50 years old! I was embarrased for her.

5 out of 5 stars beginner.......2007-04-01

If you are a beginner to exercise as I was...this is the DVD for you...very great detailed instructions, but you can follow the instructions easily as you exercise along with him...don't get me wrong...if you are just beginning it may take you a while to get through the whole session, but well worth the money

5 out of 5 stars This IS a Bootcamp!!!.......2007-01-05

Folks! This workout is no joke. I thought I could get through basic training without stopping. Well, I could not even get through first 20 minutes and had to stop because the burn in the muscles was just unbearable. This is a very thorough workout. Here's what to expect.

First of all, this workout builds endurance. If you reach a point where you get through the entire workout without interruptions then you are guaranteed to obtain an endurance of an athlete. I liked the bands, but they are usefull only for the upper body exercises. When Billy Blanks began the legs routine, the bands were just on my way and frankly did not add any resistance to the kicks. So feel free to stop using the bands once you begin the kicks. And please do not even try to get through the entire DVD if you are a beginner or only somewhat in shape. What good would it be if you have sore muscles and cannot even feel it because you died during that push-up routine? Take breaks and slowly build your endurance. Maybe after about a month you can try to be a hero and actually complete this workout and still be able to walk to a shower rather than have someone else get you there.

3 out of 5 stars Basic Boot Camp.......2006-08-02

If you are looking for a cardio workout, this DVD is not for you. However, if you want strength training, you'll be pleased. He does go a little bit too fast at times (which tends to make for sloppy form for anyone who is not experienced in general kick-boxing like moves), but overall, you'll feel this work-out in your legs. I'm just disappointed it wasn't more cardio based.

4 out of 5 stars HARD!!.......2006-02-27

This workout is so hard.I had to stop 2 times because I had to run for water and I couldn't even finish the whole DVD! I like the workout because they move at a fast pace but sometimes I couldn't keep up.Also the floor exercises are way to advanced for my taste I'll work my way up there.I did about 30 to 35 minutes of this and I was dripping in sweat.Anybody who loves cardio workouts and punching and kicks this is for them.Even though they do some streaches in the begining I advise you to streach before doing this. Now I'm kinda scared to see what the Ultimate Bootcamp is like.I ordered the Bun and Thigh Roller and I'll be using that and this but belive me only 20 minutes of the Basic Training Bootcamp a day along with 10 minutes of the Bun and Thigh Roller.Thats exactly 30 inutes of exercising.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable Workout..........2006-02-02

I've been an advanced exerciser for many years now and have especially loved Taebo. When this came out, I had to give it a try. My sister had purchased it so she let me give the basic video a try. Oh my gosh!!! I couldn't believe how sore I was. I watched the video first then did it. It was so much more challenging then it looked when I watched it through. I used to think that my shoulders were one of my strongest body parts, but I was really struggling because those bands make such a difference. Even though I was sore, I asked my husband to buy the set for Christmas and am loving the videos.

5 out of 5 stars excellent for beginners.......2007-06-09

i have thoroughly enjoyed this workout. i am a large woman and it was fun, but demanding. the first section (30 minutes) works shoulders and tummy areas. it was fantastic fun. i would recommend it, and i will purchase the next dvd from this duo.

3 out of 5 stars FOR BASIC BEGINNERS (skip this dvd if you've had any bellydance experience).......2007-03-14

In reference to the "Basic Moves" portion...
This is a half hour dance *instruction* video. Some moves may tire out your shoulders and hips, but it isn't much of a "workout," and definitely not cardio or strenuous.

~10min of head/neck & shoulder/arm movements .
~10min of rib/hip movements. ~5min of basic steps.
~5min of floor moves (Cleopatra/outer thigh lift, cat, leg stretch)

They introduce individual isolated moves, and repeat them several times for users to practice; most moves were easy to pick up (but will take time & practice to make it look graceful). I don't know if it's the instructors or if it's because they are demonstrated isolated motions, but they look a bit robotic/jerky. This seems is an Intro to belly dance for total beginners.

I think people with previous belly dance experience will find this basic video too slow/boring and stiff.

I would much rather RECOMMEND "BELLYDANCE BASICS AND BEYOND: Technique for a Solid Foundation" BY JENNA, which is a 2.5hr DVD with much better technique and practice options; it provides a teaching portion of all the major belly dance moves, as well as a drill/practice section.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-03-11

Thanks to other reviews, I bought this DVD. Perfect choice for beginners! I also started a belly dancing class and this is MUCH easier to follow. I love how it teaches the basic moves and then moves you into a work out. I would highly recommend this for anyone who is thinking of trying this type of workout. Its fun, sexy and although you get some good burning going, easy to do!

3 out of 5 stars Not as easy as it looks.......2007-03-10

I would have given this a 5 star rating, but it is not as easy as it looks. The moves take practice! It is fun, but if you are as uncoordinated as I am, it takes a little work.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-08

I first got this out from my local library. After practicing for a week, I ordered my own copy. I use it all the time! You work out in a FUN way that gives you results. I also recommend the Fitness For Beginners Arms, Abs, Hips, Buns and Thighs DVD. Great way to get in shape and learn a few moves while you're at it. The twins are inspirational!

4 out of 5 stars Good intro to pilates.......2007-02-25

This DVD set is a good introduction to pilates. The basic workout is 20 minutes, and the advanced is around an hour. I used this dvd combo, in addition to cardio and toned up very well in a few months.

Sometimes I did find Mari Windsor a little annoying and cheesy, but the substance of the video is worthwhile. Also, I don't recommend this for intermediate or advanced pilates - users of this skill level may not find even the advanced dvd challenging.

While I did like this set, I might recommend Ana Cabon's basic mat workout as a better buy for the price.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect suppliment to your mat class........2007-02-15

I love this set so much I am buying a few more of her DVD's. I started a little over a month ago at a studio once a week for a group mat class and use the 20-min and 57-min DVD at home on the remaining alternating days during the rest of the week. Although, Mari does a good job at demonstrating the exercises, since I am new I want to be extra sure I am using the proper form and will remain in a class for the additional coaching. I find Winsor Pilates compliments my class perfectly. I have dropped 10 pounds since starting and can really feel the difference.

4 out of 5 stars Good for beginners. Too slow for intermediate or advance........2006-09-23

I would rate this 4-5 stars FOR BEGINNERS, but 2 stars for more advanced users. What's commendable about this video is that she really takes time to EXPLAIN HOW TO PROPERLY DO EACH MOVE, and she gives good advice to how to modify the move for people who are not as strong or have bad backs. It really makes a beginner not feel lost in terms of how to coordinate the new motions. However, for anyone who is beyond the absolute beginner level, this tape is VERY BORING FOR MORE ADVANCED USERS because more than half workout time is spent listening to her talk about how to do each move, rather than just doing the moves; even after the 1-hour workout I felt like I only did 15minutes of exercise, so it was a waste of my time. (For intermediate level users I would recommend other videos, such as Ana Caban's video which goes through more moves at a not-rushed paced but without the dead time in between each move.)

5 out of 5 stars Awesome workout collection!.......2006-06-26

Maren Winsor has me hooked on pilates!

I absolutely love these DVDs. I started off with the basics to learn the moves, and quickly progressed to the 20 minute, coupled with other excersises. Once I started doing the accelerated body sculpting, I haven't done anything else!

I am a pretty petite person, but with trouble spots. After one month, I lost 6 pounds and saw some awesome definition in my buns, arms and stomach. My stomach is so flat and lean, I have never seen such great definition. All from one video! Best yet, my husband has noticed my new body.

This is an awesome workout that I don't get tired of, it has a combination of many pilates mat excersises that really challenge your "core". Since then, I have tried other pilates videos, and by far, this one is my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT!!!! I LOST 70 POUNDS AN D COUNTING.......2006-04-13

Mari Winsor has changed my life!!! I know this sounds infomercialist but she really did!! i was really overweight and almost 2 years ago I decided to really get serious about weight loss. I ordered this series but as usual it took me months to actually use the tapes. When I did, no lie, the first week I noticed my posture was more erect, my stomach had lifted a tad. I was amazed because usually unless I see some sort of improvement within 30 days, I stop. I didn't expect to see something the first week. You talk about motivation. I have since ordered eveything that she comes out with. If you have monster thighs such as myself, she has a pilates tape or DVD specifically for buns and thighs, her upper body tape literally melts fat off your neck and face within days. By the way, Target sells the series for $40 now. Hope I helped someone. I only have 40 pounds to get off now, I just ordered a new dvd from her, wish me luck!!
