Officially produced to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the Russian Revolution, October quickly became another of Sergei Eisenstein's experiments in film form. As in his masterpiece, Battleship Potemkin, Eisenstein uses explosive montage to create the spirit of revolution--in this case, the events in St. Petersburg during the months leading up to the Bolshevik revolt. Eisenstein's insistence on speaking the language of pure film (deploying space, shadow, movement, and rhythm to create his meaning) shoves his mad rush of images straight into the viewer's eye. A worker's rebellion in the streets, followed by the raising of bridges to isolate their neighborhood, becomes a visual symphony of panic. The film has also been known as Ten Days That Shook the World, its release title in the U.S. (borrowed from the book by John Reed). Its value as propaganda can be debated, but October is incredibly dynamic as film art. --Robert Horton
Description
Russian director Sergei Eisenstein's powerful retelling of the 1917 Russian Revolution, "October" is an acknowledged masterpiece in the use of editing, lighting, camera placement and mise-en-scene. An absolute must for any film connoisseurs collection.

Before Harrison Ford assumed the mantle of playing Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan hero in Patriot Games, Alec Baldwin took a swing at the character in this John McTiernan film and hit one to the fence. If less instantly sympathetic than Ford, Baldwin is in some respects more interesting and nuanced as Ryan, and drawing comparisons between both actors' performances can make for some interesting postmovie discussion. That aside, The Hunt for Red October stands alone as a uniquely exciting adventure with a fantastic costar: Sean Connery as a Russian nuclear submarine captain attempting to defect to the West on his ship. Ryan must figure out his true motives for approaching the U.S. McTiernan (Predator, Die Hard) made an exceptionally handsome movie here with action sequences that really do take one's breath away. --Tom Keogh

Description

Based on Tom Clancy's bestseller, directed by John McTiernan (Die Hard) and starring Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER sweats with high-tech anxiety and the tension of men who hold Doomsday in their hands. A new technologically-superior Soviet nuclear sub, the Red October, is heading for the U.S. coast under the command of Captain Marko Ramius (Connery). The American government thinks Ramius is planning to attack. A lone CIA analyst (Baldwin) has a different idea: he thinks Ramius is planning to defect, but he has only a few hours to find him and prove it - because the entire Russian naval and air commands are trying to find him, too. The hunt is on!

3 out of 5 stars Like, so 80's.......2007-06-24

This is a really good yarn, but the film adaptation is marginal - Connery and Baldwin are real, compelling, and entertaining, but the other actors leave much to be desired. Some really good shots of underwater scenes, and a good suspense level, but the acting could add a lot to this film.

5 out of 5 stars The hunt for Red October.......2007-05-27

Connery at his best. A fantastic film. Definitely an owner movie.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2007-05-02

I can't stand Alec Baldwin, but he did well in his first major motion picture. Sean Connery was good as he always is. I liked everything about it. The music is good. The special effects don't match these days, but I can live with it. A very dramatic, well acted movie I think.

4 out of 5 stars Cold war movie.......2007-02-18

This is a great movie about the cold war with excellent casting and directing. I had read the book so when I first saw the movie I was a bit dissapointed from the fact that some of the important factors were underplayed in the movie. However this movie really grew on me and it is really entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars The Hunt is OVER ... for a great Submarine Thriller!.......2007-01-21

I just finished watching the Hunt for Red October for the jilienth time... It had occurred to me that I never have written a review for this great movie here at amazon.com... I have reviewed the great WWII movie Das Boot, the hilarious Operation Petticoat, I have even put together two different lists about submarine books and submarine movies but incredibly I have not written a review about this great movie! I remember the first time I saw this movie when it came out in movie theaters and thinking, "Wow! How did Clancy know that, I thought that was classified?" I served on submarines in the `70s and considered myself very informed about submarines. This is a great Cold War yarn that will keep you on the edge of your seat - If you want to see a first rate submarine thriller then Hunt for Red October is a sure bet!

Based on the memoir Rocket Boys by Homer H. Hickam Jr., October Sky emerged as one of the most delightful sleepers of 1999--a small miracle of good ol' fashioned movie-making in the cynical, often numbingly trendy Hollywood of the late 20th century. Hickam's true story begins in 1957 with Russia's historic launch of the Sputnik satellite, and while Homer (played with smart idealism by Jake Gyllenhaal) sees Sputnik as his cue to pursue a fascination with rocketry, his father (Chris Cooper) epitomizes the admirable yet sternly stubborn working-man's ethic of the West Virginia coal miner, casting fear and disdain on Homer's pursuit of science while urging his "errant" son to carry on the family business--a spirit-killing profession that Homer has no intention of joining.

As directed by Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer), this wonderful movie is occasionally guilty of overstating its case and sacrificing subtlety for predictable melodrama. But more often the film's tone is just right, and the spirit of adventure and invention is infectiously conveyed through Gyllenhaal and his well-cast fellow rocketeers, whose many failures gradually lead to triumph on their makeshift backwoods launching pad. Capturing time and place with impeccable detail and superbly developed characters (including Laura Dern as an inspiring schoolteacher), October Sky is a family film for the ages, encouraging the highest potential of the human spirit while giving viewers a clear view of a bygone era when "the final frontier" beckoned to the explorer in all of us. --Jeff Shannon

Product Description

Coalwood, West Virginia, 1957. Working in the coal mines is an inescapable way of life in this small town. When high schooler Homer Hickam, Jr. (Jake Gyllenhaal) sees the Sputnik satellite in the night sky, he dares to break free of the mines and reach for the stars. With the support of his teacher (Laura Dern) and three friends, Homer sets out on an inspiring quest to build his own rocket. Overcoming a poor education, a tough father (Chris Cooper) and a series of misfires, Homer turns his dreams into reality in this incredible true story of hope, determination and triumph. You ll laugh with it, cry with it, and go away absolutely loving it, says Robert Butler (Knight Ridder News Service) of the critically acclaimed October Sky.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best!.......2007-06-21

Excellent feel good story about a group of boys who overcome their circumstances to achieve their dreams in a small coal mining town. It is entertaining, there are funny scenes, there is conflict between characters, there is motivation, determination! It is a true story from a book by the star character, Homer Hicham.

5 out of 5 stars Great family movie........2007-06-11

Great family movie. It's a story about kids getting inspired to learn something that changes their lives. It doesn't rely on violence or romance, just a good story. My brothers and I built lots of rockets when we were kids, so that probably helps.

If you think kids shouldn't build model rockets because it is too dangerous and they might get interested in building one, don't buy the movie.

5 out of 5 stars From Western Virginia coal mines to NASA.......2007-06-04

A simple and effective film about what life is all about, responding to challenges. It took a lot of gall for Homer and his friends to be able to grow into manhood without falling in the trap of a prefabricated future that runs from father to son, to be a miner in the local mine and never get out of that fate. It took also three different challenges for Homer and his friends to conquer a personal and free future. The challenge of the first ever man-made artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, a Soviet satellite, a milestone in human history, a turning point that Homer and his friends could not miss, did not want to miss. Then the challenge of science and applied mechanics to calculate and to devise a rocket from scratch or rather from what they could gather in books and order in their minds. Finally the challenge of a world that resists and refuses and tries to force you back into the pack, even with an untimely accident that forces you to get back into the pack for plain survival necessity, and even then Homer proved he had the guts to accept the challenge that was blocking for a while his own plans and dreams. But there is another side of the story that the film does not emphasize enough. Homer is the carrier of the project but he is also the carrier of the inspiration he and his friends need. If he is the one who is going to get the university scholarship, because his friends gave him precedence, his friends will also be able to get on their own roads and tracks and step out of the mining fate, thanks to the energy his inspiring example sets in front of their eyes. It is hard at times not to follow the example of the one who is like a beacon on a difficult road. But the film is also effective to show how the father resisted this dream because for him science was not the fabric of a true man, like mining or football. The working class fate that was so present in those 1950s and 1960s and still is present in some areas is too often enforced by the traditional thinking of the father. If the mother does not have the courage to speak up one day, the working class fate I am speaking of becomes a tremendous trap. Here too the film is effective and it should make some parents think. This might have been the fourth challenge Homer had to face: the challenge of taking a road that was not the one pointed at and programmed by his own father.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-05-13

A favorite movie - great storie about believing in your dreams and not giving up.

5 out of 5 stars This movie is one of the ten best of all time........2007-05-12

This movie is a real movie, not the made-up stuff they sell in theaters. Based on a true story, it just works like magic. The characters are totally believable, and at the end, it shows the space shuttle. So it really is about Homer Hickam, currently a NASA engineer, 98%, and the current space program, 2%. The year it's set in is 1957, 50 years ago, and starts with Sputnik going overhead. Anyone who likes space stories, especially real ones, will love this movie.

I really enjoyed watching the Jack Ryan movies in this collection while I could. Now when I place them in my DVD player I get a message like "Title 8 Prohibited from Playing at the present time". I believe my DVD laser lens may be dirty and I'll try cleaning it today. I sure hope I get to watch these movies again some day soon.

If you are a fan of the the Jack Ryan series then this is the set to get starting with the one that started the franchise to the climatic prequel that to this point concludes the series. The price is right too conidering what trilogy and movie sets go for these days, and you don't feel empty handed due to the fact that each film is a special edition so if you are a movie freak and enjoy all of the behind the scenes stuff then you get to enjoy all of that as well. Overall it's the best choice for the price in looking for the films featuring Jack Ryan.

Without becoming didactic, The Missiles of October does an outstanding job of presenting many points of view on the Cuban missile crisis. The film humanizes Kennedy's near impossible task of avoiding war without compromising national security. The earnestness of this 1974 made-for-television dramatization may briefly remind one of social studies class--indeed it is at times difficult to maintain consciousness while the extensive cast of characters is being introduced at the opening. Not to worry, though--soon the power plays begin and The Missiles of October becomes completely gripping. Actual news footage is spliced in with the action, nicely serving as exposition and driving home just how very close the world came to nuclear war. A crew of excellent character actors flesh out the story and reveal the psychological games behind the language of diplomacy. William Devane takes on the difficult task of playing John F. Kennedy. While he doesn't quite capture Kennedy's charisma, he does occupy the role comfortably and effectively conveys the president's deep worry and determination to avoid war. Martin Sheen plays an engaging Robert Kennedy and Michael Lerner, oddly enough, manages to make Pierre Salinger absolutely fascinating. --Ali Davis

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Missiles of October.......2007-07-05

Interspersed with newsreel footage to heighten its gripping realism, Page's riveting and groundbreaking made-for-TV docudrama reaches for "you-are-there" verisimilitude in its depiction of the thirteen days in October 1962 when JFK agonized over whether to go to war with Russia, a time when the world came close to nuclear annihilation. Well-scripted and directed with nail-biting intensity by Page, "Missiles" boasts tremendous performances by Devane, Sheen, and Howard Da Silva as Premier Khrushchev. See it before (or in spite of) the more Hollywood-ized Kevin Costner vehicle, "Thirteen Days."

4 out of 5 stars The Missiles of October.......2007-05-24

As a high school history teacher it is always a pleasure to find a movie about a significant historical eveent in which the event is not flowered up. Thiss movie does so. While a bit slow and plodding at times, a bit convoluted for a contemporary high schooler to follow all of the players in JFK's Whitehouse, it does convey the fear and angst associated with the times at the height of the Cold War.

5 out of 5 stars "Missiles of October or Thirteen Days"? .......2007-04-06

Missiles of October is a superior telling of the story from a historical and dramatic point of view. Its treatment of the whole event is more complete and more accurate than that provided by Thirteen Days.

Thirteen Days will be the popular choice because it is produced as a movie, while "Missiles" is a filmed stage play. This fact alone will guarantee the mainsteam viewer will turn to Thirteen Days everytime.
This is a shame because the story in Thirteen Days is dumbed down considerably by comparison to "Missiles".

2 out of 5 stars DVD With No Restoration.......2007-04-03

I very much enjoyed the excellent casting and acting of The Missiles of October. However, I am insulted by the way they portrayed the Republicans. I also find it childish for Kennedy to be flipping the Republicans off in the guise of holding his cigar. This was as immature as the exiting Clinton staff trashing the White House.
My low rating, however, is with the zero care in restoring this dramatization of history. Much of the lip-syncing was off and the copy was no different than my VHS. I am pretty sure they could have cleaned up the badly scanned frames that appeared about once every 1 to 5 minutes.

In the autumn of 1962, the Soviet Union began placing medium and intermediate range nuclear missile sites in Cuba. These missiles were a direct threat to the entire United States, Mexico, Latin America, and portions of Canada. During those thirteen days, the United States and the Soviet Union teetered on the brink of nuclear war. This excellent movie depicts what life was like in the Kennedy White House during those long, trying days.

William Devane stars as President John F. Kennedy. He is told that intelligence reports have shown that the Soviets are building nuclear missile sites in Cuba. Upon confirmation of the reports, the President, along with his cabinet members, begin to formulate a plan as to how to deal with the threat. Bobby Kennedy (Martin Sheen) is in favor of a naval blockade, while members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff prefer bombing the sites. President Kennedy is determined to not let the Soviets know that the U.S. has found out about the missiles. As each day passes, the missiles get closer and closer to being operational. The tension continues to rise throughout the crisis, and the strain is evident on President Kennedy's face.

Meanwhile, Premier Nikita Khrushchev (Howard Da Silva) has proclaimed that the missiles were placed in Cuba as protection for Castro's regime after the failed Bay of Pigs invasion attempt. He claims they are for defense only.

The two sides continue to free-fall toward nuclear war. Kennedy insists that the missiles must be removed. The Soviets want the United States to remove their missiles from Turkey before they pull out from Cuba. A naval blockade of the island is set up, with the Americans given orders to stop and turn back any Soviet vessel trying to get past the blockade. The Soviets threaten to sink the American vessels so their ships may pass. Unfortunately, the blockade doesn't work as planned, and soon, the missile bases were operational. Now, Kennedy had another choice to make; should he bomb the sites? During this time, an American U-2 spy plane was shot down by the Cuban missiles. The two superpowers moved ever closer to war. But, an 11th hour breakthrough between the two countries saved the world from nuclear war. The Soviets agreed to remove all of their missiles from Cuba if the United States pledged to not invade Cuba. This agreement saved the world from nuclear armageddon.

This is an excellent movie. William Devane does a first-rate job as President Kennedy. He even managed to copy Kennedy's thick Boston accent. Martin Sheen is equally good as JFK's loyal brother. Perhaps one of the best performances is delivered by Ralph Bellamy as U.N. Ambassador Adlai Stevenson. The scenes where he's sparring with the Soviet ambassador, telling him he's prepared to wait until hell freezes over for a response is one of the best parts of the film.

Although I was not alive during this crisis, I've read much about it, and I commend President Kennedy for his unwavering insistence that the missiles be removed from Cuba, and this movie does his memory justice in that aspect. I give this movie my highest recommendation. The historical accuracy is excellent, and the acting is impeccable. For thirteen days in the autumn of 1962, the security of the world hinged on two people. Thank goodness, they came to an agreement.

--Tom Keogh

    1 out of 5 stars Blah..........2006-12-26

I liked the other Eisenstein movies that I've watched. Alexander Nevsky is a classic and would probably be more of a classic if it were American. Battleship Potemkin is pretty good and has some stuff that gets ripped off by Hollywood. So I thought I would give this one a try.

I really wanted to like this movie. It's about the Russian Revolution but for me it lays things on a little too thick. I could only get to about half way through the movie (as the horse is hanging off the bridge is where I stop). Excellent cinematography and music but I couldn't watch more of it. Way too thick for me.

5 out of 5 stars "Down with the lackeys of the bourgeoisie.".......2006-10-22

"October" ("10 Days That Shook the World") written and directed by Sergei Eisenstein and Grigori Aleksandrov was commissioned by the Soviet Central Committee to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Bolshevik revolution in Russia. As such, the film is a landmark slice of propaganda depicting the events of 1917, a relic not just for film lovers, and it's a remarkable piece of revisionist history too.

The black and white silent film is told in documentary style and focuses on the efforts of the provisional government to maintain the country after deposing the Tsar in February 1917. The film was made in 1927, and by that time, Lenin was dead, and Trotsky--one of the main figures behind the Bolshevik revolution was already in the hot seat with Stalin and was effectively being cut out of the Soviet political system.

The film shows scenes with Trotsky, and doesn't identify him at first, but then when it does it's in a negative light. Some of the best unsubtle scenes involve the bourgeoisie women who beat up the Bolshies and tear up their flag. General Kerensky is also depicted negatively--he throws himself on the bed, covers his head with pillows and has a temper tantrum--and the tantrum continues while scene after scene depicts growing unrest in the country. The large-scale mob-scenes of the revolution remain fairly bloodless, and the emphasis is on events in Petrograd and the ineptness of the provisional government. There are some great scenes of the Mensheviks, the Savage Division and the Women's Death Battalion. The scenes involving Lenin show the people going wild with adulation at their hero. No doubt Stalin realized that it was better (and safer) to immortalize a dead politician (Lenin), and wiser to marginalize a live one (Trotsky). As Winston Churchill said, "History is written by the victors"--displacedhuman

4 out of 5 stars Classic Propoganda Film.......2006-10-05

October is a re-telling of the events of the Russian revolution. However, it was commissioned as a propoganda piece so that the only "character" that stands out is Lenin, who, of course is idolized. There are the populace and soldiers who are on the side of the Bolsheviks but they are basically nameless and faceless as is the other side (mensheviks). However, its not the plot that makes the movie fascinating but the use of montage and imagery, sometimes dizzying. Not quite as good as Battleship Potemkin but still fascinating. Certainly, not as morally disturbing as Triumph of the Will (which it influenced) but still, a film made to support a government sanctioned point of view. However, the crowd shots and the quick cuts from one scene to the next in a rapid but still coherent fashion, resonates through current film and even music videos.

The film is a documentary about the The October Revolution, also known as the Bolshevik Revolution. This film may be very very hard to follow. But it is probably one of the most important films in history. Many people don't realize how this film was revolutionary.

Sergei Eisenstein revolutionized a new style of cinema known as the Soviet Montage that defied many of the rules established by classical Hollywood cinema. For Eisenstein the important aspect of film was not to deliver a narrative that was already pre-constructed but rather to stimulate the viewer's senses, emotions and thinking as the film was being projected.

For example, Eisenstein's montage style is best displayed in the sequence where there are abrupt jump cuts from one distinct image to the next. The intent was to stimulate the spectator by creating conflict and collision between shots. For Eisenstein, he created a montage style that juxtaposed two shots that had no causal relationship with one another, which liberated the spectator from any conventional meaning and allowed them to actively take part in the intention of the film. Basically, the storytelling takes place in how the audience decides to make meaning from the fast changing images.

The progression of the film is to portray a causal change by the public where they go from being chaotic to organized. For Eisenstein, he historicizes the event of the October Revolution for the public audience who have experience the Russian revolution. This further enhances the montage technique he uses because the Russian audience can make a local meaning of the images displayed to create a continuous storyline. This is why the film is so hard to follow without a great understanding of Russian history.

Interestingly enough, the reason why this montage styles was created was merely financial. It was cheaper to use stock footage already processed and splice them together than to take footage with a camera. Despite this, what he created was a revolution to the art of filmmaking. So if you are interested in filmmaking, this film is a must see!

I had a chance to see this band live recently. They were great. I already owned the CD Argue with a Tree and wanted the DVD to remember my own experience at the concert. Well, it's almost as great as the concert. Nothing can replace being there in person, however, this DVD almost did.

I saw Blue October at The House of Blues in New Orleans 2 years ago and they gave a fantastic live show. After seeing them, I have to say that I will be a fan for life. Justin gives a passionate and dynamic performance and the rest of the group is great also. Watching this DVD is the next best thing to seeing Blue October live. It is great, and I would highly recommend it.

After hearing Blue October's "Hate Me' I began to follow more closely their history. I purchased their CD's in reverse order and with each one I was more impressed..Then I was amazed to see this DVD and a 'live' performance. What energy!! What performers!! The lyrics hit home, the music is so powerful. It's a great recording, good visuals and great sound.
Get this DVD. These guys are a force to be reckoned with. Then do your self a real favor - See them live!!

Judicial debate gets a lively cinematic treatment in First Monday in October, starring the odd couple pairing of Walter Matthau and Jill Clayburgh. When a justice of the Supreme Court dies, his appointed replacement is a witty but deeply conservative woman, Ruth Loomis (Clayburgh, An Unmarried Woman, Silver Streak). Loomis immediately raises the hackles of Dan Snow (Matthau, The Bad News Bears, California Suite), a fervent liberal in the minority on the bench. For a while, First Monday in October succeeds in making Loomis and Snow's debates about pornography and censorship lucid and engaging, aided greatly by the actors' obvious intelligence and grasp of the issues. But the movie gets sidetracked by an aimless corporate conspiracy plot and what can only be described as an intellectual romance between the two leads, which never quite catches fire. Still, an interesting effort. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars First Monday in October.......2007-02-03

This title arrived in a timely fashion and was greatly enjoyed by my husband who loves the scene about the wallpaper. Thanks to Amazaon I was able to replace a lost item in his library.

    5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Enjoyable........2007-01-10

First Monday in October is a delight to view. It is accurate in picturing the inside of the Supreme Court and it is true to life in many of it's characters and issues. Matthau's character uses strong language which is a little off-putting but it is consistent with the character he portrays. In a world which is experiencing the vanishing of an ability to appreciate true "characters" this film is a refreshing reminder that characters are the spice of our society and play a valuable role. Very funny as well as entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Realism vs. Hollywood.......2006-07-21

First I would comment about all the comments here about how false it is that a woman so young would be a Supreme Court Justice. This is a woman cast to be in her 40s, and historically this has happened a few times, even in modern times. Sandra Day Oconner was just about 50 when she was appointed, and the age range for a typical appointee is between about 45 - 60. Do your homework.

Next, to suggest that the Supreme Courst isn't like this shows a lack of real reading into their history. These ARE people who wheel and deal and change their minds and have personal agendas and political affiliations. Geez, to be nominated you don't even have to have been a judge!! So, theoretically this movie isn't too far off the mark.

Next, to understand the movie one has to have lived back in that time or read enough about it to understand history. You would understand that the conflict here was REAL, and was repeated not only in courts but throughout the work force and every other aspect of society. Shall we try to find a Catholic Preist who is a woman? Oh wait, in their original beliefs a woman is a lesser thing that a man and were not pure like a man is, hence the idea that a priest should be celabate.

I like the movie in that the characters are human, just like the Justices are, and it gives a pretty accurate view at how personal views affect decisions they make, and then also has some good comedy in it. Walter Matthau's acting performance in this movie is also excellent in my opinion.

    It is worth the dime.

4 out of 5 stars Matthau is Supreme.......2005-12-31

The First Monday in October refers to the first day the Supreme Court is in session each year. On Broadway it starred Henry Fonda and Martha Scott. Ms. Scott produced the film version.

This is about the appointment of the first woman on the Supreme Court.

Associate Justice Daniel Snow (Walter Matthau) is a liberal judge. When an associate justice dies, the President appoints a woman. When AJ Snow finds out that it's a woman, he gets excited. That is until he finds out that it is Ruth Loomis "the Mother Superior of Orange County."

Like the play, this is a movie about ideas from the extremes. Very controversial subjects of the time, pornography and big business, were chosen. The questions are simple but the answers are complex. This is a film to listen to and enjoy. You may not agree with what is being said but it will make you think.

This is not a perfect film. At times it's preachy and at the end it makes a wrong turn but it is still worthwhile. What is most important is this film makes you understand that there are two sides to each question and both need to be heard to understand the question.

Give me a break! a HEALING break with plenty of laughs, that is.

Hurrah for the comic relief brought to us in "The First Monday in October" - - This movie should be watched by all who have serious business with the Supreme Court: justices, law clerks, picketers among others. Even if this movie were meant to be an art film - or one that snobby critics could cleverly rip apart - Why not decide right now that it is a romantic comedy & perfectly appropriate to watch this "First (Week) of October" for some much-needed healing that laughter will bring?

It is hard to imagine more stressful days in 'our times.' Our sides need to ache from laughter instead of disgust over all the bungling of bureaucrats. The play on which this 1981 movie was based pre-dates the appointment of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor to the court, by the way. Who cares that Jill Clayburgh is younger than the current justice-candidate? She is a worthy foil for Walter Matthau who 'nails' the situation when he grumps: "When a man moves into the White House you never know what will happen to his mind." Matthau is Oh! so comfortable in his curmudgeonly role as an outspoken liberal-minded justice.

Among other lines that endear him to me: "The telephone has NO constitutional right to be answered." The opening close-ups -- exterior shots of the Supreme Court building -- are more striking than any shown on newscasts the first Monday of (this 2005) October session. Marble and granite do enhance any serious debates that may follow . . . & I did enjoy the HANDEL, Bernie!

5 out of 5 stars The most truth in one place. . ........2005-11-08

I was a high school junior in Wisconsin, 90 miles from Madison, at the time of the "two days" covered by this film. Today I'm a high school history teacher in Ohio, and the next time I teach my semester elective on the Vietnam War era, I'm going to use this film as the opening exercise. It contains more truth about the war than I've seen in any other single presentation. It's not just about the Black Lions, not just about the UW protesters, not just about the war's politics, not just about the Vietnamese. Everybody's there-even the Madison police-everybody gets to speak, they're all presented fairly.

The film is based on David Maraniss' THEY MARCHED INTO SUNLIGHT, which tells the same stories, and a great many others, in far more depth. But given the constraints of a 90-minute video presentation, TWO DAYS IN OCTOBER is outstanding. With its use of vintage TV clips juxtaposed with modern-day interviews of the participants, it creates immediacy at the same time it gives the witnesses a chance to reflect on events decades past. I looked hard for bias, and didn't find any-although it's clear the film is a Rohrschach ink blot test. What you see in it depends on what you bring to it. So I'll mention what I bring to it: the perception that the higher-ups in Vietnam and Madison were in a fortress of denial, that they refused to accept the evidence of their own eyes. The Black Lions were victims of an ambush because an overzealous commander ordered them to advance when he shouldn't have, but Gen. Westmoreland couldn't admit it, even to himself. The violence at the U. of Wisconsin was perpetrated mainly by the police, who thus made a touchy situation worse, but the state legislators staged public hearings to blame the students and Chancellor Sewell because they couldn't own up to reality.

Other sources which deal with some of the same subject matter as TWO DAYS IN OCTOBER are the protester-friendly video THE WAR AT HOME (1979) and Tom Bates' moderate/conservative nonfiction account RADS (1992), about Madison's underground bombers. Both of them describe the Dow Day violence as part of larger stories.

I connect the authorities' penchant for denial to an anecdote that appears in THEY MARCHED INTO SUNLIGHT, but not in the film. In 1967, current Vice President Dick Cheney was a graduate student in Madison. Maraniss quotes him as dismissing the student protests as a distraction and a waste of time. Apparently Cheney was too busy with "other priorities" to learn anything at the UW that would have prevented him from leading our country into the current quagmire in Iraq. (And he's still in denial about the existence of WMD.) What a difference it might have made if only he had actually gotten himself educated about the difficulty of fighting insurgents or the dangers of plunging our soldiers into an unnecessary war.

For a quick encapsulation of America in Vietnam, there's nothing better than TWO DAYS IN OCTOBER.
