As with Grease (1978) and Footloose (1984) before it, Dirty Dancing was a cultural phenomenon that now plays more like camp. That very campiness, though, is part of its biggest charm. And if the dancing in the movie doesn't seem particularly "dirty" by today's standards--or 1987's--it does take place in an era (the early '60s) when it would have. Frances "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey, daughter of ageless hoofer Joel Grey) has been vacationing in the Catskills with her family for many years. Uneventfully. One summer, she falls under the sway (as it were) of dance instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze). Baby is a pampered pup, but Johnny is a man of the world. Baby's father, Jake (Law and Order's Jerry Orbach), can't see the basic decency in greaser Johnny that she can. It should come as no surprise to find that Baby, who can be as immature as her name, learns more about love and life--and dancing--from free-spirited Johnny than traditionalist Jake.
Dirty Dancing spawned two successful soundtracks, a short-lived TV series, and a stage musical. It may be predictable, but Grey and Swayze have chemistry, charisma, and all the right moves. It's a sometimes silly movie with occasionally mind-boggling dialogue--"No one puts Baby in a corner!"--that nonetheless carries an underlying message about tolerance and is filled with the kind of exuberant spirit that's hard for even the most cynical to resist. Not that they'd ever admit it. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

I absolutely Loooooooove this movie.......2007-07-03
What else can I say. I have the VHS, DVD, both soundtracks, I love this movie.
It's a simple story, girl meets boy, girl falls in love with boy, boy takes a little time to fall in love with girl, it all works out in the end.
What's not to love.

I have had the vhs of this movie and out of the blue I was like let me but the DVD. I love it! Its the orginally movie with music videos, trailers and other cool features. Plus it is only $10!
not quite all there as I would like it.......2007-05-15
Kudos for the extras, including the Live In Concert feature. The only 2 things I don't like are: the concert does not have chapters (as it was presented on the Collector's Edition); this version doesn't include the Bill Medley interview (also from the Collector's Edition).
Where is Patrick?.......2007-05-14
I certainly enjoyed watching Dirty Dancing over. The special features are nice. Lots of memory. The only thing is there are no interview with Patrick Swayze...really strange...
Hello Mr Swazye!!!!.......2007-04-03
I have loved this movie from the first time I saw it. The music in this movie is great and I just love the story. If you like romantic movies and you havenever seen this it is a must see.

The sinuous world of 1950s Cuban dance halls provides the setting for Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, a "reimagining" that shares with the original movie a deep love of sexy young people pressed tightly together on the dance floor. Fresh from New England, bookish and lovely Katey (Romola Garai, adorable in the charming but little-seen I Capture the Castle) meets a fiery young busboy named Javier (Diego Luna, Y Tu Mama Tambien) at a snooty hotel. Before you can say Tito Puente, the two have found a common language in the sensual swaying of their limbs, despite the resistance of Katey's mother (Sela Ward). It's all ridiculous, of course--the dialogue is atrocious, the characters tortilla-thin, and the politics embarrassing--but that's hardly the point. Luna is dreamy, there's lots of sweaty dancing, and Patrick Swayze makes an appearance--what more can you ask from a movie called Dirty Dancing? --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
Nice movie with a little history lesson.......2007-06-10
Pretty predictable if you watched the first Dirty Dancing. Still some good dancing in this one and it was good for a movie with next to no know actors in it. I found the activities going on during this period in Havana more interesting then the story of the main characters. Good to watch, not good to own.
Videos.......2007-02-27
This was a present for my 17-year-old daughter, who loves to dance. She likes Havana Nights for its spicyness and Spanish flvor. It is a teen-age thing.
Que tonta.......2006-11-27
I understand that Dirty Dancing movies aren't going to be exactly like Citizen Kain. But when you think about the premise, the culture and classist clash of American vs. Cuban dancing, sexuality, and budding romance set during the backdrop of the Revolution, the movie sounds quite promising. I mean, when I heard the premise I thought "This movie was MADE for me," because it has Cuban history and politics, awesome dancing (or so I assumed it would, due to its predecessor,) and, come on, the main character has the same name as me. But I should have realized then that a good premise does not necessarily lead to a good, or even adequate, execution.
I won't summarize the movie as so many others do; if you want a synopsis, look to their reviews. I WILL point out what exactly I found so lacking about it, and why I do not feel it was that good of a movie, even when one considers that it's ultimately just a dance movie. But again one must remember that it was their decision to involve politics in the movie, and in doing so they made themselves fair game--I do not believe in just using a deep political situation just to make a story line seem a little deeper; if it is not handled properly, it is insulting.
First off, the romance. Diego Luna and Romola Garai had definite chemistry, and it is so disappointing when you realize that the movie did not capitalize upon this, and all you're going to see in addition to some very sexually charged dancing is a few hurried onscreen kisses and an implied sex scene. Given their chemistry and the buildup of their relationship, their first kiss could have been so much better, instead of just snuck in during a dance routine--it was so quick I spent many minutes wondering if I had really seen it or not. However, to me chemistry is not the only thing required in an on-screen relationship, and I have no idea to this minute why Javier and Katey fell in love with each other. Katey's personality was developed in the movie sense (she likes classic literature, is a bookworm and rather progressive for her time) and Javier was clearly the "will do anything for his family and feels that Cuba is in need of a change" but I don't really know how those two fit together. Aside from the sexual attraction component, I have no idea what exactly they saw in each other to make their relationship anything more than "He was hot, she was pretty, and she felt sorry for him." Some might argue that Katey was merely attracted to the intensity and freedom of the Cuban lifestyle embodied by Javier, but I ask you: the movie was founded upon the idea of a romance, and what the heck kind of relationship is that?
I would also like to add that the Spanish conversations WITHOUT subtitles were incredibly rude to the audience. I do speak Spanish, but I could not make much sense of the slurred words and to this day I am wondering what exactly Javier and his brother said to each other after the Revolution broke out. Maybe they figured that the audience would not care (pfft, what are politics compared to SALSA DANCING,) but I cared.
And now, the historical components. I will not get into the anachronisms--such as Katey's parents' attitude towards her staying nights with a boy they don't know, and that even Cuba in the 50's could not have been that unrestrained--as there are many who could do that better justice than I (apparently the style of dancing in the movie was unlike what was popular in Cuba at the time.) After all, it is only a dance movie. I can ignore that stuff. But when the movie brings the history to ME I cannot ignore it, and I further dislike it when movie directors assume that their audience is completely ignorant of certain aspects of history and will just assume that "Man, that Batista guy was a jerk; he didn't allow dancing. Hopefully life will be better under this new regime! Who'd they say it was, some guy by the name of Fidel Something-or-Another?" (I am exaggerating; at least I hope that no one is that ignorant.)
And here we get to the backdrop of the story, Revolutionary Cuba. First off, Batista's regime wasn't really shown to be that bad; aside from the story involving Javier's father, it might as well have been that town in Footloose (perhaps a little more violent.) It was like Dictatorship Lite. After Havana falls to Castro and co., the Cubans act happy (which is understandable) but things are otherwise pretty calm, which one cannot imagine is really likely in such a situation.
And then we get to the ending. Katey asks Javier to come to America with her. In a move which my sister has deemed the "stupidest decision in a movie ever," Javier refuses, saying that he has to stay because of the Revolution, which he believes (or wants to believe, anyway) will improve life for him and his people, Batista killed his free-thinking father, viva la Revolución, yadda yadda yadda. I understand that movies don't always have happy endings, but I think that there is a middle ground between "boy and girl live happily ever after" to "girl lives happily ever after and boy gets sent to the gulag after he finds out that Castro isn't exactly the nice guy he claims to be and wow, Batista was a cakewalk compared to this, and has to spend his years in a drawer cell where he would kick himself for his earlier decision if, you know, he could actually kick himself, but drawer cells don't allow that." I truly think that the filmmakers did not anticipate their audience to think this much, which is understandable, but come on--everyone knows that communist Cuba is no picnic, and when Katey says something along the lines of "I know that we'll meet again," I couldn't help but thinking that the only way THAT would happen would be if Javier braves the Gulf and takes up Florida's wet feet dry feet policy. In fact, when I told my friend about the ending he said, "that boy is going to have to stop dancing and learn to convert his '57 Chevy into a boat."
I understand that people at first thought that Castro was fantastic and he didn't reveal his true intentions until later, but the fact remains that Cuba was politically instable and to choose to stay there instead of going to America was still pretty questionable. And then Katey's optimistic "We'll see each other again someday!" was just waaaay too much for me.
So, in short, if you're like me and you can't turn off your brain while watching a movie, this one's going to give you a lot of issues. If you CAN turn off your brain and just enjoy it for what it is--a dance movie--you'll probably like it, though find some things (like the romance) lacking.
Better than the others.......2006-10-24
I bought this movie last year on a hum bug. This movie really surprised me. I really enjoyed it. My daughters love it as well. We watch it constantly and the soundtrack is awesome too.
For the Love of Dancing, Great Lessons! Romantic Story!.......2006-10-16
Choreographed to utter perfection, the love story between two inspiring young characters from different worlds grows through a masterpiece of dancing blended from steps in their special journey together. Beautiful Katey(Romola Garai) finds all the ingredients: to be special, important, wanted and needed in a guy who completes her in the passion for dancing, and wins in a national dance competition that spectacularly surprises her parents and old friends. Her dedication to help Javier yields a bitter-sweet reward as they both get more than they expected in freedom, intimacy, and royalty in the world of great music and rhythm that make their last dance the dance of a lifetime. This movie is truly delightful to watch over and over. The captivating music, creative dance, and wonderful love story all come together in a symbolic journey through life!

Customer Reviews:
¡Haga lo!.......2007-05-24
This DVD is fast-paced. The instructors are all business, but the dancing itself still makes the DVD very fun. There is plenty of content, and the menus are easy to use. I'll be very pleased with myself if I can master everything in this beginning DVD. You may be very impressed with all you can learn too, especially if you are like me and haven't really been exposed to salsa before. Gigi and Pedro demonstrate advanced salsa at the end of the DVD; their demo is just flat-out crazy.
This is definately a keeper.......2007-02-22
With this DVD you can learn salsa very easily and fast. With Gigi as a wonderful instructor and three different angles to look at the steps, dancing becomes a piece of cake. Absolutely one to add to your collection, people!
So clear and easy, even my boyfriend can dance now.......2007-02-17
I've been dancing my entire life and salsa for the past six years. Then I got a boyfriend last year and he felt kinda left out when we went to salsa clubs, cause he never did salsa in his life. Now to be honest I'm not much of a teacher, and he doesn't have the money for actual classes, so we had a problem. Then my teacher mentioned something about some dirty guide to salsa, I gotta admit at first I was a little sceptical, but we bought it anyway. And it's fantastic, it's so easy and so much fun and Gigi is so awesome too. Except that my boyfriends wants to meet her now, no way that's happening, he's my dance partner now!
Salsa is awesome!.......2007-02-10
I actually got this dvd from a friend of mine for my birthday. She thought it would be a fun joke. So when I got it at my party we all laughed and said we would all be amzing salsa dancers by the end of the night. A couple of hours later we went through the entire dvd and all of us could do all the steps Gigi taught us that night, from Abajo to El Dos. And the fact that we could still follow the instructions after the 2 bottles of tequilla the eight of us finished that night, proves to me that this is the best Salsa dvd you can find on this planet.
WOAH WAH WEE WAH.....I LIKE!!!!.......2007-02-06

Having just 90 minutes to cover the music of Louisiana in general and New Orleans in particular might not seem sufficient, but director Michael Murphy is up to the task in this entertaining documentary. The subject is huge: this is, after all, the birthplace of jazz, the spawning ground (with neighbor Mississippi) of the blues, the home of zydeco king Clifton Chenier, the Neville Brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, and countless others, and the melting pot of African, European, and Caribbean cultures. But instead of focusing on the big names (Louis Armstrong gets only a perfunctory mention), the film spotlights (through interviews and live footage) lesser-known contemporary talents like blues guitarist John Campbell, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, songwriter-producer Allen Toussaint, a 12-year-old Cajun fiddler, and a 91-year-old Dixieland trumpeter. There's plenty of local color, what with sidebars about Louisiana's art, culture, and religion, but it's the infectious music that makes this one tasty gumbo. --Sam Graham

Whether you're a long-time aficionado or a recent convert, DANCING TO NEW ORLEANS will give you a great appreciation for the amazing gumbo that is the music of Louisiana. More than any other place, Louisiana has influenced the development of American musi

one day i'm going there.......2005-01-12
This movie is brilliant! Having seen the Neville Brothers in concert; and having a few CDs by them as well as Dr John and Buckwheat Zydeco this opened my eyes and ears to more diverse and extremely talented musicians from New Orleans. The highlight of it for me was young Amanda Shaw. Her vibrant personality and
musicianship were amazing. After watching this i had to add some more music to my collection (from Amazon), that is Prof Longhair and Amanda Shaw. The only dissapointment was that Anne
Savoy was interviewed but did not perform - she also is brilliant! Living thousands of miles away it is great to be able to watch such a diverse bunch of talented musicians on one DVD. One comment - all the music is music you can dance to - even the gospel! One day i'm going there.

Love it.......2007-06-24
I have had the vhs of this movie and out of the blue I was like let me but the DVD.

Product Description
Beyond Partner Dancing: This is Dirty Salsa For The Team It started in El Casino Deportivo, a Havana social club in the 50s. A team dance with familier Salsa turns in wheel formation. Learn one of the most fun styles of Salsa known as Casino Rueda. Danced in a wheel with 2 or more couples switching partners, it creates a very dynamic atmosphere for everyone involved. Casino Rueda is as much a pleasure to watch, as it is to dance. Filmed in High definition with 3 cameras, this multi-angle DVD sports two top Salsa music hits. Look around and compare, there is nothing like the award winning Dirty Salsa DVDs in the Salsa instruction market. Take this DVD home and experience the wonderful new group dynamics of Rueda.

Fun for All.......2007-04-27
The Instruction:
This multi award winning DVD is a superb way to learn team dancing, where one switches partners after each combination while dancing in a circle. One would think this would be chaotic to teach, but instructors Gigi and Nick know how to do it, and do it well. After the initial demonstration with music of how team dances are done using four couples, Gigi and Nick break it down and teach us the patterns, and at this stage you will have to be knowledgeable of the basic steps and combinations, which can be learned in previous Quick and Dirty Guides (Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced, or all 3 in a boxed set), so that when Gigi says "Dile que no" your feet will know what to do...otherwise you will get lost in the circle here, even though very advanced combinations are not used.
DVD Options:
The different angles one can view the dancers with is very helpful, and I have a preference for the "High,' which gives you a good sense of the flow and patterns, and also one can pick up the combinations taught individually in a "Lessons" menu. This is a very well produced DVD, and the lessons take place in what looks like a large ballroom, with a gleaming though well worn wood floor. The dancers are nicely matched, and Gigi and Nick are an attractive pair to learn from. Team dancing is a wonderful activity for friends and family to share, and is great exercise too! This DVD will teach you all the necessary steps and patterns, the fun and added bond to your friendships is up to you!
A powerful video that will teach you the hottest dance with multiple partners.......2007-04-23
This video is designed to teach you how to dance the Casino Rueda, which is the Salsa danced by multiple couples moving in a circle The people selected for the demonstrations are clearly what you would consider average people, trained in the dance techniques, but in no way advanced. It is a dance packed with sensuality, the people change partners frequently and both sexes are involved in the heavy flirting. When you watch the video, it will be clear why the dance is also called "Dirt Salsa."
It is very instructional, when it starts out, the movements seem extremely complex, yet like so many dances, once you see someone step through the movements very slowly and with explanations, it is possible to pick it up. The greatest educational advantage is the fact that the action is shot from three different angles. By watching the action from the three different perspectives, all of the body movements can be seen and mimicked.
As someone who has taken three different sets of ballroom dancing lessons, I can attest to the reality that there is nothing better than having an instructor observe and critique your moves. However, to be really good at dancing requires many lessons and the best supplement to formal lessons would be this DVD. Being able to dance is a valuable social skill, an excellent form of exercise and from the male perspective, a great way to meet and retain quality women. And dancing this way with women will do wonders for your libido. I strongly recommend it.
Enter A New Dimension in the Salsa Dancing Zone ..........2007-04-06
Called "Casino Rueda" this wheel-like dance formation creates a beautiful effect on the dance floor ... plus it brings good friends even closer together. Synchronized salsa dancing in a group is fun and exciting. It is joyous and thrilling to learn and master these dance movements. Gigi is a superb master dance instructor. She provides clear, precise directions in how to accomplish various dance moves along with Nick, her coinstructor, who is also a highly effective teacher. Together this very talented dance couple demonstrate and explain how to do groups of steps in a logical sequence to accomplish many polished and smooth dance movements. While two, three or four couples can dance "Casino Rueda" style, in this DVD there are a total of four couples who demonstrate some of the varieties of dance step possibilities. They all maintain a synchrony and harmony that is astonishing to view. The best part is, all the movements on this DVD can be mastered by following and practicing the steps taught by Gigi and Nick. The unique feature on this DVD: multiangle programming allows the student to view the steps from different angles. This gives the student a choice of the best view from which to learn the special foot and arm movement combinations in any dance sequence. Mastering unfamiliar movements is much easier when viewed from different angles, it feels like having a *live* dance instructor performing right before your own eyes.
Some of the dance movements taught on this DVD are: dame, dame otra, dame dos, adios, enchufla dame, enchufla doble, el uno, candado, enchufla pa'l medio con dos, derecha, izquierda, el cero, el ocho and dile que no. Either Gigi or Nick will first do a demonstration and verbalize a count, "forward two, three, and back two three", or "first step on the left, the gentleman is waiting for you on the left" "delegeno, four, five, six" and "back from dame" ... You do the dance steps along with them. You do the counting, watch the video and imitate the step sequence. You can replay the sequence, from any one of three different angles to review and practice. Let me reassure the reader, these steps can be mastered and are very exciting to learn. The dance steps make sense and fit the music. Even as a single person, you can learn the male or female part of the dance without a partner, I did without much difficulty.
These dance movements are beautiful to watch and a pleasure to learn and master. It is a joy learning salsa with Gigi and Nick. They are superior, outstanding dancers and instructors. Let me assure the reader, this couple makes you feel you are learning to dance with a group of friends. Also, the couples who participate in the demonstrations could be people you know, the only difference may be they do not stumble or forget any of the steps. However, owning this DVD provides the student *exactly* the *same* opportunity they had, to keep practicing and becoming proficient in dancing Casino Rueda style salsa. If anyone feels hesitant to buy Part 4 "Dirty Salsa 360 Degree - Team Dancing" first, I would recommend obtain The Quick & Dirty Guide to Salsa - Part 1, Beginners where most of the steps are taught with only one couple participating: the primary instructor Gigi and her co-instructor Pedro. Also, The Quick & Dirty Guide to Salsa - Complete Collection is recommended to learn the many moods of salsa in your own home ...when you have the time. Erika Borsos [pepper flower]
Very nice disk for a very fun activity - salsa square dancing.......2007-03-11
As I always note when I review these dance instruction DVDs, I am not a dancer. And maybe that is a good thing. I can view the disk as a beginner and share what it looks like to me and you can be the judge if this disk is for you.
This is the fourth in "The Quick and Dirty Guide to Salsa" series. Where the first three taught the individual couple increasingly sophisticated moves, this shows how to use multiple pairs, here four couples, how to dance as a group or team. What is especially nice about this DVD is that it was shot using three cameras and you can easily switch between the views using the "angle" button on you DVD remote control. You can see the normal front view, or an angled top down view (it isn't straight down like the June Taylor dancers on the old Jackie Gleason show), or the back view that is 180 degrees from the front view. Or you can watch the whole 35-minute presentation three times complete from each view by selecting the one you want from the main menu.
To me, it seemed like an interesting update to the square dancing that was popular when I was a kid. You have a caller, you have multiple pairs, moves involve passing partners between the pairs, doing figures, walking (promenade) around the square or circle, and all the other fun stuff. But you get to do it to some really cool and popular Salsa Music. The moves themselves have a nice grace to them, too.
The instructors are very helpful and they do things several times to help the viewer practice it on his or her own. All the dancers are good and are inviting to even a novice like me. It is a very nice disk for a very fun activity.
At last the Rueda dvd.......2007-03-03
Style : Miami Rueda
Level : Beginners to Rueda teachers.
Without doubt the instructional Cuban dance dvd's produced by Debdoot Das are the finest on the market. This new dvd on Team dancing is great.
The 3 angle instructional makes learning & teaching this style easy.
This dvd puts all the Rueda moves together.
The dancers are all great. The moves nice & have a good flow.
This is a stand alone dvd which can be just brought on it's own, but we do recommend you buy all the other dirty salsa dvd's to increase your moves.
Highly recommended.
