All film noirs need deceit, betrayal, dialogue hard as diamonds--and dames even harder than that. But Gilda is the only one with the dame front and center, and for good reason. Rita Hayworth shimmers in the 1946 classic, which spins on a tortured plot involving the title character (Hayworth); her imperious husband (George Macready), a ruthless casino owner and head of an Argentine tungsten cartel (!); and Johnny Farrell (Glenn Ford), Gilda's ex-lover and now her husband's go-fer. But no one watches Gilda for the plot, except to learn that all the characters have secrets--perhaps even ones they would kill for. Hayworth captures Gilda's vulnerability beneath her devil-may-care front ("If I'd been a ranch, they would have named me the Bar Nothing"). Not to be missed: Hayworth's slinky striptease to "Put the Blame on Mame." --Anne Hurley

Art film and road movie collide for Vanishing Point, an existential car chase across the desert in a post Easy Rider America. Barry Newman stars as Kowalski, a taciturn driver who bets that he can drive a new Dodge Challenger from Denver to San Francisco in 15 hours. He loads up on amphetamines and begins his odyssey through the contemporary west while a funky black DJ (Cleavon Little) turns the driver into a folk hero and broadcasts advice on dodging the cops. It's like a counterculture precursor to Smokey and the Bandit, with the road as the last bastion of freedom and the DJ as a combination commentator and mystical guide. The slim plot offers a network of society drop-outs that aid the "last free Man on Earth" (as the DJ describes him) on his obscure but obviously symbolic quest while flashbacks paint Kowalski as a world-weary hero. It doesn't really make much sense, but the amazing car chases and excellent stunt work are stunningly set against the American west, beautifully captured by cinematographer John A. Alonzo. Vanishing Point is most assuredly a product of its time, the heady, anything-goes era of rebellion in the early 1970s. --Sean Axmaker

Saturday Night Live: The Complete First Season boxed set is much more than the sum of its parts, in fact it's one of the most significant TV DVD releases yet. This isn't just an 8-disc set featuring 24 episodes of live sketch comedy, it's a big box of zeitgeist. This really is the complete first season, mostly uncut and complete with every musical act and short film intact (a few bumpers and transitions were removed to make it flow better on DVD). The first broadcast aired on October 11, 1975, hosted by George Carlin and featured musical guests Billy Preston and Janis Ian. At first, things seem a little raw: Carlin's opening monologue is painfully unfunny, Chase's first shot at the seminal "Weekend Update" is amusing but sloppy, and much of the cast seem to be holding back. But the groundwork is all there, and soon in subsequent episodes you can see it all start to come together (especially with John Belushi who lets his simmering intensity out to tremendous effect), proving that the first episode simply belies the historic impact the show would come to have on popular culture. Here you'll find the first airing of some of the many skits that stayed famous over the years: the Land Shark, Samurai Hotel, Chevy Chase's opening pratfalls and the impersonations of Gerald Ford which would spin off into the proud SNL tradition of presidential parodies.

The set is a very entertaining look at a significant point in TV and American cultural history. It is so 1975, but that's a major part of its appeal: did Chevy Chase really used to look that young? Did a young George Carlin really used to look so old? Check out Abba in those disco jumpsuits. And if you're a fan of The Muppets, seeing them here on late-night TV making jokes about getting drunk will blow your mind. Younger fans may not fully understand just how groundbreaking this show was at the time. For example, Richard Pryor hosting the seventh episode, which includes the famous "Word Association" sketch. Back then, to have a comedian of Pryor's reputation joking about drugs, sex, and race on live TV was a tremendous risk (it's also gratifying to see the obvious effect he had on the next generation of comics like Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock), and it helped established the show's cache as unpredictable and edgy. The DVD set is full of moments like this and, like the show itself, it has its ups and downs. Watching hosts like Rob Reiner (back when he was still in his "Meathead" days from All in the Family), Madeleine Kahn, and Desi Arnaz work their comedy chops with the cast are high points. Whereas the infamous Louise Lasser episode, which is known for being among the worst episodes in the show's history… not so much. Still, it's entirely to Executive Producer Lorne Michaels's credit that it's included here. It's a tremendous collection of everything that gave birth to Saturday Night Live, and the seed of what SNL would become, spawning many movies (not to mention a few catch-phrases), launching the careers of many great comedians, and providing TV viewers with some of the most famous, and infamous, moments in broadcast history. And it all started right here.

The set is packaged in a well-designed, sleek fold-out digi-pack with every episode listed on the sleeves, with hosts, musical guests, and the original air date. The special features include a rare look at the cast members' original screen tests, and a 1975 TV interview with the cast. --Daniel Vancini

Description

Nicknamed the "Not Ready for Prime Time Players," the original cast of Saturday Night Live ignited a comedy revolution with their mix of irreverent characters and satirical impressions of political figures and pop culture icons. From the premiere of this groundbreaking sketch comedy show on October 11, 1975, live from historic Studio 8H in New York City's Rockefeller Center, Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Jane Curtin, Chevy Chase, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, and Gilda Radner launched themselves into instant stardom and were often referred to as "The Beatles of Comedy." Created by Lorne Michaels over three decades ago, Saturday Night Live has had the cultural impact and relevance that few shows can claim. Nowhere else can you see the complete first season of SNL, featuring hosts George Carlin, Rob Reiner, Lily Tomlin, Richard Pryor, Elliott Gould, Candice Bergen, or original musical performances by Simon & Garfunkel, ABBA, Patti Smith, Jimmy Cliff, and Carly Simon. And if you're curious as to how the original cast was hired, check out the DVD bonus features, which include the screen tests of each performer.

How about making 'Best Of' Saturday Night Live by year? Not by host, not by former player, not by something with interviews and commentary, just best skits only and by year. Best of 1978, Best Of 1986, Best Of 1994, etc...

4 out of 5 stars great!!.......2007-06-06

Not sure how the current generation will get this, but I like it. Some funny stuff, some not so funny stuff. But what you have to remember is this was the first season, and this show was supposed to be over the top. Pretty tame by todays standards.

Oh and this DVD proves why John Belushi is comedic genius and Chevy Chase.....well not so much. Chevy Chase got ALL the press during the first season of the show, and I think Belushi hated him for it. Because John knew he was funnier than Chevy. Weekend update was funnier in later seasons with Belushi and Jane Curtain, Dan Akyroyd. And I didn't get it than and STILL don't get why ppl thought Chevy's "Gerald Ford" skits were funny. Not to say Chevy Chase isn't funny. In movies, just not here. I think just about anyone who enjoy's sketch comedy will enjoy this. I also going to get it for my dad on Father's Day. Enjoy!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good but I want all of the other years as well..........2007-06-05

It's a bit rough as the show didn't really have it down until year 2, but who wouldn't die laughing at the slumber party skit. Yes it's now been done a zillion times, but watching it with my teenagers was a hoot. You should have seen their faces realizing that their parents watched this when they were teenagers.

Just have the remote handy and skip over the stuff that isn't so good. There is plenty here to keep you laughing.

1 out of 5 stars Harmlessly passing your time in the grassland away..........2007-06-01

That's the opening line to the penultimate song on Pink Floyd's 1977 album Animals. It's entitled "Sheep", a fair number of which are writing five-star reviews for this set.

Sorry to burst the collective bubbles of everyone present, but SNL sucks it hard. Now that this DVD collection is out, and more seasons are likely to come, newer generations as well as long-time fans can have their third eye squeegeed without the use of mushrooms (using a Bill Hicks joke). This season basically says over the course of 24 painfully bad episodes, "This show, contrary to what you people think, was never 90 minutes of unmitigated genius. Sleep tight."

Searching for the funny in this set is like trying to find Amelia Earhart's remains in the Pacific Ocean-- as much as you want to find it, you never will. Chevy Chase is the biggest idiot in whatever field he's working in now (I think he's changed it five thousand times since last month), and Gilda Radner's "Emily Litella" routines are about as funny as being stabbed in the gut in front of your children. Even worse, when Jane Curtin takes over the Weekend Update position one season from now, Litella starts calling her a "b**ch". Ooh, edgy!

And before people start mass-voting "not helpful", keep in mind that these are the unedited versions everyone's been requesting for so long. Now that we have them, I believe everyone's perception of the early years is going to change. But then again, these same people think Andrew Dice Clay is a comedic genius, giving me even more reason to have no faith in humanity.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to wash my face with soap, water and a sword.

5 out of 5 stars Need more like this.......2007-05-22

The best of SNL since it is complete, and not just the 'best of this or that..but the entire season, need more 'entire seasons'.

This movie not only shows Gilda's rise to stardom at SNL through her famous characters, but gives you glimpses of her as a person. Her sweet personality and unique "cooky manner " made her one of a kind. I will never stop missing her.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Hayworth noir.......2007-05-01

Over the weekend, my interest in yet, another, classic film star sparked when I watched "Cover Girl" with Rita Hayworth.
Then, later in the weekend, I watched "Gilda", which is a completely different kind of film. IT's film noir, it's dramatic, it's a 1940's film starring one of the best actresses to come from that time, Rita Hayworth. She stars, sings, dances, shimmies, and shakes like the earthquake she sings of in "Put the Blame on Mame." Rita was the ultimate package for Hollywood. A Truly talented Redheaded dynamo..
In the film, Gilda is married to an older man who runs a casino in Buenos Aires. An ex-lover, played by Glenn Ford, comes back into the picture as her husbands' helping hands and eventually he is trying to use his own hands to help himself to Gilda. Gilda is red hot and rearing to go with the first guy who will have her. She yearns for attention, and thrives on the reaction she gets as well.
Not the best well known of it's kind, this film noir is a fine film which turns out to be quite a great work thanks to the shining star called Rita Hayworth.

5 out of 5 stars The eternal power of images.......2007-04-27

Rita Hayworth radiates superabundant sensuality as the magnetic center of this film. Hayworth's beauty stands outside of time; her changing moods and expressions affect us powerfully, at a pre- or nonverbal level. (Therefore most attempts to analyze this film fail, beyond general statements about Hayworth as an iconic femme fatale). There is an overwhelming ambiguous sexuality permeating the film, almost palpable, which also explains its enduring appeal. Ballin (George Macready) voyeuristically pushes Johnny (Glenn Ford) toward his wife Gilda (Hayworth). But there is an equally strong sexual attraction/undercurrent between Ballin and Johnny throughout, never resolved, and the "happy ending" has a tacked-on quality, as though merely to satisfy convention and audience expectations. The strange nature of love and love-hate is wonderfully explored by this unusual love triangle. A very handsome and suave Argentine police official/detective (Joseph Calleia) is thrown in for good measure. This film deals with eternal truths about masculinity, femininity, and the dark, complex and unpredictable forces of sexuality. How the U.S. could have slipped into the anodyne sanitized 1950s after films like this is a mystery to me. Watching Hayworth perform makes it clear that most so-called "stars" of today are absurd nonentities.

5 out of 5 stars Gilda.......2007-04-10

"Gilda" was Rita Hayworth's vehicle to
cinematic immortality. She plays the
Grande Dame of Femme Fatale; the seductive
High Priestess of all bad girls and
Women of the world. Blatant voyeurism
is more than justified when it comes to
reasons for watching this film. Hayworth is
perfect and she strolls through this movie
with the confidence and sex appeal of a
super model down a runway.

The plot is no disappointment, either. Johnny Farrell (Glen Ford)
Ford wears multiple hats: first, Gilda's "chaperone/protector,"
and later, her husband. In between, Gilda makes
life hell for Johnny (the man who wronged her way back when)
by leading a care-free life of hedonism;
at Johnny's emotional expense, no less. The two are later married
after Ballin Mundson (Gilda's husband and Johnny's boss) fakes his
death to escape the law. Johnny inflicts emotional anguish on
Gilda by restricting her freedom. Gilda rebels and runs away. Her
famous "Put the Blame on Mame" striptrease is her classic
statement of rebellion. From there, more clever twists
and turns finally result in Gilda and Johnny finally recognizing
their true love for each other.

Don't think twice; get this movie. It's guaranteed enjoyment
for any fan of Hollywood's silver screen era. It's also
a "must-buy" for Rita Hayworth fans.

5 out of 5 stars classic late forties film noire.......2007-03-29

Although Rita Hayworth receives top billing for her untamed sultry role as Gilda, Glenn Ford deserves high praise for his depiction of "a man who makes his own luck" in a post-war Argentinian casino.

4 out of 5 stars Triangular.......2007-03-27

Like everyone says, this is a very strange story. It seems to be a love-triangle, but there are more angles than three. For about half the film I thought Glenn Ford was meant to be in love with the Ballin Mundson (Ballin Mundson?) character, because he saved Ford's life (what for?), then gave him a job and was good to him. So far, so odd, but relatively simple to understand. When Rita shows up things become extremely complicated: incomprehensible in fact. Who had run out on who, and why? I think we should have been told. Was it something to do with Rita's earlier line of work? A lot of blame was being put on Rita, but so far as I could see she wasn't doing much wrong. Well, maybe just a bit of a tease, but so lovely, sweet and tender you'd forgive her anything. Actually, nobody's motivation here was the slightest bit convincing. Also, as somebody else has said, the plot reads as if someone put together the pieces left on the cutting-room floor after Casablanca. Anyway, two-thirds into the story, we get a totally alien sub-plot about conquering the world by cornering the tungsten filament market, which we couldn't care less about, as it has nothing to do with the tensions between the three main players. This part is boring and even more unconvincing than the original triangle. The sinister Mr Mundson looked good in his part, but it seemed as if he wasn't being allowed to get his teeth into the role. Glenn Ford has never impressed me as a personality. He never seems to have what it takes: I can't imagine Rita falling for him, nor can I believe he could take out heavies with his puff-ball punches. I can't even believe he'd behave like the nasty little swine he's supposed to be. So why have I watched this movie two or three times, and why will I watch it again? Only one answer: you said it, folks --- Rita Hayworth.

Originally hatched in 1978 as a short film parody for Saturday Night Live, this expanded, 70-minute mockumentary on a trend-setting quartet of British mop-tops bloomed into one of Eric Idle's better projects outside Monty Python. Taking the career (and hagiography) of the Beatles and inverting them quite nicely, Idle conjures up four doppelgangers who offer the familiar mannerisms but practically none of the intelligence of their models. If that sounds like the same gag that powered This Is Spinal Tap (which emerged six years later), it is, with the crucial difference that Idle's lampoon is precise where Tap was consciously generic.

In telling the saga of the Rutles, Idle (who doubles as earnest narrator and McCartney-esque Rutle Dirk McQuigley) works from a rich and immediately familiar trove of pop lore, and he has a ball revisiting and reinventing milestones from the Fab Four's fabled history. The attention to period detail helps elevate the gags further, but Idle's real secret weapon is Neil Innes, standing in as Ron Nasty, the Rutles' answer to John Lennon: it's Innes who serves as the musical architect for the wonderful Beatles parodies that give All You Need Is Cash a delicious kick, and Innes, a one-time principal in the legendary Bonzo Dog Band, is gifted enough to capture the band's lyricism and energy as well as their shifting sense of style.

With the blessing and on-camera participation of George Harrison, and wry cameos from Mick Jagger and Paul Simon, All You Need Is Cash is a perfect companion to the Beatles' own glorious screen comedies and a great antidote to sanctimonious pop documentaries. --Sam Sutherland

2 out of 5 stars Only a few laughs.......2007-06-16

I enjoy Monty Python and I am a big Beatles fan, so I was surprised I didn't like this movie. Basically, there are only a few laughs, and they weren't specific to the Beatles so it could've been put in any mockumentary. What also disappointed me was there was not much interaction of the Rutles - you don't get to see them talk to each other much, which could've provided many funny moments. The song parodies weren't that funny, either.

What I did like was the visual aspects of the movie - they really did get the look of the Beatles throughout the years pretty accurately. It was also good to see many of the original Saturday Night Live cast and they provided much of the few funny moments in the movie.

If you want to see a funny mockumentary, check out "Spinal Tap" and "Fear of a Black Hat". Both movies have two necessary ingredients that this movie lacked: hilarious banter between the band members and funny lyrics in the songs.

4 out of 5 stars Python meets Spinal Tap.......2007-04-26

This is a wonderful spoof of the Beatles, which deserves a higher reputation than its fairly obscure standing.

Neil Innes is outstanding as 'Nasty' (i.e. Lennon), and of course was also responsible for the wonderful spoof songs ("Let it Rot" "Ouch" "A Hard Days Rut" etc"). Eric Idles presenter is a classic Python type character. The scene at the beginning where the presenter is being filmed from a moving vehicle which gets faster and faster is pure Python.

There are cameo roles for George Harrison, Mick Jagger and Paul Simon. George Harrison isn't playing himself, so you have to look a little harder to spot him.

Along with Spinal Tap (which was made 6 years later) this is the best spoof 'rockumentary'. Its very funny and I recommend it strongly.

5 out of 5 stars One of the funniest movies ever made.......2007-04-10

OK, so it helps to know The Beatles inside and out to totally get this movie. Even if you don't, it's still a riot. But if you do know The Beatles, this is perfect. It's the funniest movie I've ever seen.

Idle and Innes hit a grand slam here. Every scene is hilarious, nearly every line is a complete crack-up. The Beatles needed to be spoofed and they gave their blessing for this project. My guess is they even found it funny (though I doubt John liked seeing Nasty's wife portrayed as a Nazi).

The capper is the music. Some of the songs are just brilliant rip-offs, combining two or three elements of three Beatles songs. Example, "Hold My Hand" combines "I Want to Hold Your Hand," the "Eight Days a Week" intro, and "She Loves You." Just priceless.

If you like The Beatles, you'll really like "The Rutles." If you like great comedy, you'll love this. It's a can't-miss classic!

Saw the Video when it fist came out. It was great then, even better now!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Ruttles - All you Need is Cash.......2007-01-18

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant! Idle/Innes are in rare form as the dynamic duo lovingly give the Fab Four a Pythonesque makeover. Anyone who love the Beatles and Monty Python MUST own this movie! The interviews alone are worth the price of admission! Mick Jagger.. Paul Simon.. Ron Wood.. (and see if you can spot 'THE' George Harrison). Hats off to Niles Innes for the music - 'spot on'! If you didn't know any better, you'd have thought you'd stumbled onto some old Beatles recordings that were never released to the general public. Tongue firmly planted in cheek! 'Nuff said.

Gene Wilder's Haunted Honeymoon attempts to re-create the charm of those horror spoofs from the 1940s like Hope and Crosby's My Favorite Brunette. Larry (Wilder) and Vickie (wife Gilda Radner) play radio stars who decide to spend their honeymoon in the spooky old manse where Larry grew up with his Aunt Kate (Dom DeLuise in drag). The setup is a good one and the mostly British supporting cast, including Brazil's Jonathan Pryce, are certainly game. Unfortunately, Wilder elicits more chills--and groans--than chuckles (the dialogue is particularly ghastly). In the end, the results come closer to the George Lucas-penned dud Radioland Murders than to Mel Brooks's brilliant Young Frankenstein (featuring Wilder as the good doctor himself). If the Wizard of Oz-type ending doesn't completely redeem it, Haunted Honeymoon is still entertaining enough and seems positively sophisticated compared to the spoofs of more recent vintage (now that's a scary thought!). --Kathleen C. Fennessy

3 out of 5 stars A Decent comedy/horror of the 80s.......2007-05-20

Again, another film that has play many of time during the young years of HBO. Most of you that grew up during the 80s will remember this film. Now, we hardly see it get played. If you happen to like the comedy of Wilder, Radner and DeLuise, and are big fans of theirs, then you will truly like the film. Recommended to fans of Radner, Wilder, and DeLuise only!

4 out of 5 stars Cute movie.......2007-01-04

I love this movie. Gilda, Dom and Gene give wonderful performances, its just a wonderful cast.

3 out of 5 stars sometimes its good to just be silly...........2006-08-24

Haunted Honeymoon is a silly movie. If you like silly movies, its great! Wilder is silly, Radner's role is charming (=understated) and silly, and Dom Deluise steals the show in drag playing a huge eccentric old lady! What a scream! The plot is simple, the gags are predictable and it's all just silly. It's a fun movie.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT - MAKES YOU LAUGH !.......2006-01-05

haunted honeymoon, directed by gene wilder and starring gene wilder - as well as gilda radner, dom delouise, and jonathon pryce - will make you laugh ! the plot of the mystery in this movie is easy enough to follow ; it is simply a take on the " staying the weekend at the scary mansion " genre. what keeps this story "bubbley" is that the film features stars with such prescence.... they all seem so light-heartedly immersed in the project that their acting is fun to watch - almost like an snl skit, at times, at its contagiously mirthful best. i dare anyone not to laugh during the scene in which the "monster" comes out of the ceiling as gene wilder is trying to sleep. i have seen this movie three times, and i have laughed and laughed at that scene, every time. gene wilder simply knows how to strike the proverbial universal chord.

5 out of 5 stars A Wilder movie =).......2005-11-15

This is a movie I saw when I was young, then it was forgotten and
missed for a long time as I could remember parts of the movie but
not the name of the movie. Then a few months back I saw it again
and it was as good as I remember it was and the scenes I had
remembered was really as good or even better than I remembered
them to be. Gene is brilliant in playing both lost and surprised.
Its a overall a good movie, and I recommend this movie to everybody
but especially those who likes Genes silly humour =)

Overshadowed by his high-profile leads in such '70s landmarks as Five Easy Pieces, Chinatown, and One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, Jack Nicholson's remarkably complex turn in this raucous yet ultimately somber road movie also remains his most underrated. As the snarling, hedonistic, but emotionally lost Navy lifer Billy Budduskey, Nicholson teams with fellow sailor "Mule" (Otis Young) on a seemingly simple duty of escorting a naive thief (Randy Quaid) from the Norfolk naval base to the brig in Massachusetts. Though polar opposites--Mule is hard-nosed Navy, while the first image of Budduskey shows him asleep in a chair, tattered and tattooed, gripping a near-empty bottle of cheap wine--both sailors learn that the 18-year-old will lose eight years of his life for a petty theft, and agree to cram his lost years into one booze-, sex-, and drug-infested (lost) weekend. From bizarre religious ceremonies to drunken nights in New York brothels, the two sailors provide all the sins they can think of, while their charge, Meadows, appears to go along just to please his escorts. The older sailors are definitely having more fun, essentially projecting all of their own lost freedom onto Meadows. The young sailor's ultimate doom mirrors the daily prison lived by both Budduskey and Mule, and director Hal Ashby hangs a decisive air of bleakness and claustrophobia over screenwriter Robert Towne's profane humor. When the question of whether to let the poor teenager escape ultimately arrives for the two sailors, the final decision is relatively pointless: in or out of prison, all three men are trapped by the Establishment and their own lost free will. --Dave McCoy

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Last Detail.......2007-07-05

Gritty, wildly profane movie is equal parts funny and tragic, a tricky balance director Ashby sustains throughout. Quaid is wonderfully dim and pathetic as perennial loser Meadows, but Nicholson's Oscar-nominated performance as Buddusky is a revelation, easily up to his more widely recognized work in "Carnal Knowledge" and "Chinatown". Definitely worth enlisting for.

3 out of 5 stars Good character study and great to see some famous faces pop up.......2006-08-11

I had been looking forward to seeing this movie for a number of years and finally got a chance to see it. Will say this... Jack Nicholoson is in great form in this movie. This was the movie he made before "Chinatown" and he still had all that pent up power we had seen in "Five Easy Pieces" and would see even more of in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" in 1975.
Good chemistry between Nicholoson and Otis Young as well as young Randy Quaid (very innocent and captivating).
Look for Gilda Radner (Saturday Night Live) to appear very quickly in a Nichiren Shoshu scene in New York.
And Carol Kane as a young cat house prostitute who beds Mr. Quaid.
Great interaction between the actors but the plot falls short. Maybe that's just how the novel was, but was hoping for a bigger dramatic ending.

5 out of 5 stars The last Holidays before the dark years!.......2006-03-01

Two veterans Navy men are assigned to escort a very young sailor who committed a terrible mistake: to try to make of his own Forty bucks. Both of them have pity for this marked boy and decide to have a good fun before the final act.

This a smart road movie that will allow us to know why Hal Ashby and Robert Altman were the most irreverent filmmakers at those Ages, showing us some dramatic angles of the life.

Memorable performances of Nicholson and Randy Quaid.

3 out of 5 stars Ashby and Nicholson.......2005-11-11

Ashby could almost be named one of my favorite directors for Harold and Maude alone. In fact that's the only other movie I've seen of his. Whatever the case, it was fantastic and so of course I was excited when, upon viewing the opening credits to this film, I saw he directed it. Add Jack Nicholson and this was a sure-fire hit for me.

Well, not exactly. While it is pretty well done and has an interesting story, and is also really funny (okay, okay, VERY funny), it doesn't really seem to add anything especially significant to either Ashby's or Nicholson's works. Nicholson is basically himself, the humor isn't particularly in the same vein as Harold and Maude, and Ashby doesn't seem to have improved much as a director, but that can be forgiven as it was immediately proceeding Harold and Maude and wasn't made that far after.

But enough of the negative stuff. This movie is really, really funny, and the best part about its humor is that it doesn't seem to fall into any particular vein of comedy like "dark humor" or "slapstick" or the like, but more of just a straightforward silliness that's willing to go right where it needs to for a laugh. Sometimes the jokes get a little predictable, but during those times it seems the predictability of the humor kind of helps it along.

It's about 3 Navymen, one who seems to be a kleptomaniac and is being sent to jail for stealing forty dollars from a Navy charity fund, and the two others that have to take him there. One, played by Nicholson, recognizes both the innocence of the kleptomaniac and the frustration of his partner, so carries them along on a journey to have as much fun as they can while they can.

Everyone did pretty well, and it's a real joy to watch. I'm going to have to watch it some more before I comment definitively on the ending, because it seems to a point to be sort of a cop-out way of tying everything together, but I can't quite be sure.

--PolarisDiB

3 out of 5 stars A Forgotten Gem of Nicholson's Career.......2005-11-03

After viewing FIVE EASY PIECES and EASY RIDER, it became clear to me that I needed to sit down and examine Jack Nicholson's career in the early 1970s. So, when I was given the opportunity to view THE LAST DETAIL, I jumped at the chance. The plot is simple. Two Navy "lifers" (Otis Young and Jack Nicholson) are given an assignment to escort a prisoner (Randy Quaid) up north to a prison. The prisoner has been given 8 years for attempting to steal $40, a rather harsh punishment. Along the way, Nicholson takes to Quaid's character (who is eighteen and completely inexperienced) and decides to show him a good time before he has to enter prison. The rest of the movie is a Mark Twain adventure: a series of intense episodes that take place as they make their way North on trains and buses.

THE LAST DETAIL is a profoundly sad film. Despite the revelry and "good times" that these three men share, the film is haunted by the prison sentence and the "detail" that the two lifers must carry out. Randy Quaid does an excellent job at playing a completely naïve boy. He has never experienced anything in his life and Nicholson becomes his father, complete with abuse and affection. Nicholson's performance is electrifying, as always, and he manages to give this profane script the energy it needs. The character he creates has all of the complexities of real person and he manages to make it look easy at the same time. The film's success lies in its exploration of each of its three principle characters. Each one of them is blindly following suit, carrying out orders, all the while being torn by a desire for freedom and a sense of duty.

One odd thing about the film is the score: upbeat march music and drumline snare work. The music often fails to match the mood of the film, causing me to wonder if it is supposed to be satirical. Even if it is, I think it could have been executed better. The music should be in concert with the film and I felt jarred by the snare drums at several moments.

THE LAST DETAIL is not a film that gets much press, but I think it is interesting and worth a look. Jack Nicholson was on fire during this time in his life and it shows in this film.

4 out of 5 stars An OK mix of prime and weathered Gable.......2007-05-14

This Fox series includes my favorite Gable film: "Call of the Wild". Some complain this film bears little resemblance to London's book of the same title. So what. That's Hollywood's license. London's story is just a yarn too, and not nearly as entertaining. Actually, I think of Loretta Young as being the dominant character in this film, as she largely controls the eventual relationships between the main characters. The relationship between Gable, Loretta and her husband near the end of the film is reminiscent of the later "Casablanca", but the emotional content is much more intense because of the personalities and physiques of this duo and the circumstance of appearance of Loretta's husband. Off the screen, Gable developed strong relationahips with both Loretta and Buck, which shows in the film. Gable offered as much as $2000. for the dog, but the owner wouldn't budge. Buck really hated the villain, Reginald Qwen, as he showed in the film. Unlike most of Gable's films, he had a strong sidekick in the form of Jack Oakie, which is one reason I like this film. Initially, Gable was reluctant to do a film with Oakie, a notorious scene stealer. Most people seem to miss the main lesson of this film. Gable, Oakie, and Buck represent a team of legitimate,if rather primitive, venture capitalists. They try to grab as much as they can, but within limits of respectability, and they are loyal to their partners. Villain Owens represents the worst type of pretentious cutthroat robber baron, who ruthlessly eliminates his competition and disposes of his associates when they are no long essential to his ambitions. Loretta's ethos is "You get what you disserve, and no more": Jack London's supposed socialist ethos. When it comes to the choice between Gable and her husband, she exercises this ethos, to Gable's chagrin. This is a fun film to watch: great adventure and comrady, unsurpassed romance and heartbreak.
"The Tall Men", made 20 years later and in color, is another frontier adventure-romance. In some repects, it echoes "Call of the Wild". We again have a beautiful woman rescued in a blizzard. At the film ending, she again has to choose between Gable and the other man. But the on again-off again romances between Jane Russell and these two men aren't nearly as convincing as in "Call of the Wild". In some respects, this film recalls "Red River", with its vast cattle herd, long trail drive, problems with Native Americans and jayhawkers and conflicts between its leaders. There is even an echo of director Raoul Walsh's earlier film "Dark Command", in that Gable and his brother evidently had spent some time riding with Quantrill's notorious raiders during the recent Civil War. The female lead again has to choose between a poor down to earth gunslinger and a sophisticated but overambitious rival who wants her for an ornament.
"Soldier of Fortune" just isn't my kind of movie. Too comtemporary and tame. However, I found the run with commentary worthwhile. The Gable-Harlow "China Seas", of the 1930s, is a much more entertaining yarn involving Hong Kong, if in B&W. Gable's 1957 MGM movie "Band of Angels" would have been much more desirable as another choice from his late career. This might be thought of as Raoul Walsh's version of "Gone with the Wind"

5 out of 5 stars "They don't make them like these anymore".......2007-02-06

Three excellent Gable films with great stars, and well written story lines. A lot of action with captivating stories. You can't go wrong on purchasing these babies! These are Classics!

Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars anamorphic or not.......2006-12-29

Seeing as 20th Century Fox is advertising The true Story of Jesse Jaemes in its upcoming release in March as 1.33 ratio I would like to know from anyone if The Tall Men and Soldier of Fortune are Anamorphic as the info on here states all 3 films are 1.33. I collect all CinemaScope films from 1953 to 1967 but why does Fox have to release in 1.33?

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining Western with shades of "Red River.".......2006-11-10

Ben Allison (Clark Gable) and his brother Clint (Cameron Mitchell) are riding to the gold fields of Montana... In town, Nathan Stark (Robert Ryan) proposes to Ben the chance to gain big money...

Stark names Ben his trail boss, the one to drive 4,000 heads of cattle l,500 miles from San Antone, Texas to Montana...

On his way to San Antone, Ben rescues Nella Turner (Jane Russell) from Sioux attack, and falls in love with her...

After passing the night together, her ideas of dreaming 'high' struck with his, to settle down one day on a little ranch in his home country along the prairie of Dog Creek...

In San Antone, while preparing for the long journey, Nella transfers her care to Nathan Stark, a good 'connoisseur,' s person with a taste, an ambitious rich businessman who has no interest in being a 'small' man...

Antagonism between Stark and the Allison brothers increased during the hazardous journey...

Clark Gable portrays an honest man tied to a small dream... He fights and loves everything in sight on both sides of the Rio Grande...

Jane Russell appeared among us 'looking surly on a pile of straw' in "The Outlaw." Thirteen years later, she is allowed to enjoy a colorful 'prairie' tub-bath, to be called 'grandma' by the legendary 'King,' to sing: 'I want a tall man...'

Either hero or villain, Robert Ryan manages to come up with excellent performances... He was a very fine actor... Here he plays the heavy double-crossing cattle baron, the man who 'admired' Ben at the climax of the film affirming: 'There goes the man I ever respected. He's what every boy thinks he's going to be when he grows up, and wishes he had been when he's an old man.'

Cameron Mitchell was with Gary Cooper and Richard Widmark in "Garden of Evil." He played "The High Chaparral" in TV. He is fine as Gable's unstable, unbalanced brother...

Juan Garcia is excellent and quiet amusing as Luis, the loyal Mexican friend of Ben... When Nella asked him why he 'loves' Ben so much, he answered: 'Why man loves his home. Why I love my Mexico. I owe Señor Ben my life, Señorita.'

With great scenery, and filmed in the voluptuous rich landscape of Mexico, "The Tall Men" is loaded with action in big scale: Confrontation with the jay-hawkers who demand one dollar for every head before crossing the State line, spectacular 'run wild' stampede of the herd through the canyon, where Red Cloud and his brave Sioux were waiting...

Howard Hawks' monumental "Red River," told the story of the first cattle drive from deep Texas to Abilene, Kansas... Veteran Raoul Walsh superbly handles "The Tall Men" from San Antone, Texas to Mineral City, Montana... Walsh was simple and confident with great sense of humor...

3 out of 5 stars "He's what every boy thinks he's going to be when he grows up and wishes he had been when he's an old man.".......2006-11-08

This collection of Clark Gable's three films for 20th Century Fox is probably more for fans than casual viewers, but there's still much to enjoy here. The big disappointment is that William Wellman's 1935 version of The Call of the Wild is only the cut (by some 14 minutes) wartime reissue version rather than the original. Any resemblance to anything written by Jack London is purely coincidental: it's set in the Yukon, and there's a dog called Buck in it who has to pull a thousand pound weight in one scene for a bet, but that's about it. But this Buck is a huge St Bernard and he's only a bit player in a gold rush romp tailored for Clark Gable - but then at the height of his popularity, audiences would probably have burned the theatres to the ground if he'd played second fiddle to a hound. More famous for Gable and co-star Loretta Young emerging from the snowed-in on-location shoot with an illegitimate child, it's an enjoyable enough yarn even in the abridged reissue cut that now seems to be the only version surviving, although it shamefully throws away Reginald Owen's excellent villain, who deserves a much better exit than he gets here.

Best of the bunch is Soldier of Fortune, a crowd-pleasing potboiler from the days when Technicolor was glorious (okay, it was shot in De Luxe, but the same principle applies) and CinemaScope really was CINEMAScope. There's not much action (the final rescue is laughably easy), but Ernest K. Gann's script is snappy fun, Clark Gable and Susan Hayward play well off each other, Michael Rennie and the colourful supporting cast more than earn their pay, Hong Kong probably never looked better on screen and there's a pleasingly lush romantic score from Hugo Friedhofer. Curious to see director Edward Dmytryk, the one member of the Hollywood Ten to recant (after being appalled at the Party's treatment of his family while he was in prison), turning in such an anti-Communist oater, but he handles it with flair. A deathless classic? Hell, no - but grand entertainment.

The Tall Men has a great opening half hour, but once the snow clears it's pedestrian and overlong all the way despite the combined star power of Clark Gable, Robert Ryan and Jane Russell. The DeLuxe color is problematic throughout - the early scenes and studio footage look wonderful, but out in the wide-open country it tends to make everything on the trail look bleached out and lifeless, the early CinemaScope lenses probably exacerbating the limitations of the system. Still, there's some great dialog and Ryan gets to deliver the definitive description of his co-star - "There goes the only man I ever respected. He's what every boy thinks he's going to be when he grows up and wishes he had been when he's an old man."

Not an essential purchase by any means, but on the whole an entertaining one.

Amazon.com essential video

No other person has been a guest on Saturday Night Live as many times as the inimitable Steve Martin, which is what makes SNL's Best of Steve Martin compilation the finest of the series. This collection gives us not only clips of some of the show's funniest moments, but also a sense of how the show has evolved from the 1970s. Earlier monologues were rougher, less staged, but absolutely out of control in the best way, as Martin is given free rein to unleash his "happy feet," play the banjo, and generally explore his zaniness. The earliest clip dates from 1976 and the latest from the mid-'90s, showcasing the program's greatest players throughout the seasons--Chevy Chase, Laraine Newman, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Mike Meyers, Dana Carvey, Nora Dunn, David Spade, Jon Lovitz. The beloved classics are here, from "King Tut," with complete Egyptian regalia, to the arrow through the head to, of course, a "wild and crazy guy." Not enough for you? Well, "excuuuuuuse me." Also included are the Coneheads at home (with Martin playing a hapless IRS agent), "Jeopardy 1999," "Common Knowledge" (one of the wittiest SNL sketches ever), and ads for "Rise" and for "Steve Martin's Penis Cream." This collection will satisfy longtime SNL fans and is a great way to show newer fans what comedy is really about. --Jenny Brown

Description

Although he was never a cast member on SNL, Steve Martin currently holds the record for number of times hosting the show. From his early days as a stand-up to becoming a household name, Steve Martin has played many memorable and hilarious characters such as "wild and crazy guy", Jorge Festrunk, Theodoric Of York, Tightwad 007, and paid homage to King Tut through song. He also played himself in sketches. Whether peddling a special kind of beauty cream, attempting to renegotiate his contract in the middle of a live show, or doing his infamous banjo-playing monologue with an arrow through his head, Steve Martin is undoubtedly one of the most successful hosts in SNL history.

1 out of 5 stars The "Least" of Steve Martin.......2007-05-28

Were there several different versions of this title made? How did I get the lemon?

This DVD is a real "rip-off"! In approximately 30 minutes I had seen every thing on it and, believe me, I was very disappointed. There was no King Tut and no banjo playing and that is why I bought it in the first place. If it had King Tut and nothing else it would have been worth the purchase price. I went through it three times and could not find it.

Take my advice and pass on this one. It is terrible.

4 out of 5 stars Hit and Miss..........2007-04-14

I've purchased several of these "Best of " SNL videos, and so far it's been hit and miss as far as the choices they make for which skits to include on the DVD. The "Best of Tom Hanks" has so far been the most disappointing, and the "Best of Alec Baldwin" has been so far the most pleasing, and this "Best of Steve Martin" falls somewhere inbetween.

Still, if you are a Steve Martin fan, this is certainly worth purchasing, especially for the "King Tut" classic, and for the banjo monologue and for the hilarious competition between Steve and Alec for the record of most times as a host of SNL. I'd probably give this one 3 1/2 stars if that was an option.

5 out of 5 stars The development of a comedic icon..........2007-03-27

Apparently, Steve Martin holds the current (2007) record for the number of times a particular person hosted Saturday Night Live. Given that his "tour of duty" began in 1976 and his obvious talent as a stand-up comedian, this shouldn't be that surprising.

This DVD contains SNL skits from the beginning, the middle, and the end of this 30 year period, including some of my early favorites, "King Tut," "Theodoric Of York, Medieval __________," "Two Wild and Crazy Guys," his "Excuuuze, ME! routine," and some "ram......BLING" banjo playing. Classic, classic SNL stuff.

This is a well-edited collection that will stave off any withdrawal symptoms as you finish SNL, the complete first season, and wait for season 2.

For a few years in the mid-1970s, thanks mostly to his collaboration with Mel Brooks, Gene Wilder was the hottest name in comedy. His films with Richard Pryor made him such a star that he was given the chance to write and direct--a big mistake. The nadir was this slow-moving, self-conscious Americanization of the French bedroom comedy Pardon Mon Affaire. Wilder plays an American executive who glimpses a gorgeous woman and turns his life and his marriage upside down in his misguided pursuit of an unattainable ideal. Heavy-handed sex farce doesn't get much help from Wilder, who does himself no favors as a director; LeBrock is a worthy object of obsession, but she deserves a better movie. --Marshall Fine

1 out of 5 stars old wilder creates a monstrosity.......2006-12-05

aaah, now this is a bad movie one can sink ones teeth into! possibly the nadir of gene wilders occasionally illustrious career, not to mention gilda radner, charles grodin, and joseph bologna (well, no -- he made "blame it on rio"). i would say its also the nadir of kelly le brocks career, but its probably the acme as well, so ill be kind. if the movie is remembered at all today, its for that stevie wonder song that i cant remember the name of ...

4 out of 5 stars Gene Wilder's wandering eye.......2005-08-30

There's something appealing about Gene Wilder, a certain je ne sais quoi. He's not sexy, that's for sure, but his sense of humor shines through even if he's silent. Something about him makes you smile with just the thought of him. This was the movie I always think of when someone says his name, even if it wasn't the all time greatest.

Gene Wilder falls for some mysterious stranger (a.k.a. The Woman In Red - hence the title) that sets him off on a tangent. Some would call it a midlife crisis. Infidelity is an ugly thing, but he makes it funny. He and his friends - especially Charles Groden - are a bunch of cutups and their antics are hilarious (that blind man routine!). His real life wife, Gilda Radner, made an appearance as the woman scorned while his wife is blissfully unaware of his wants. An often glossed over character is Shelly, the nice Jewish boy punk rocker who for some reason is hanging around their house a lot with his kids. He's creepy and weird, but harmless. In the end, he faces a big question that a lot of us face when it comes to fidelity vs. infidelity. I've had many conversations that mirror this exactly - "What the hell am I doing? I have a wonderful [fill in the blank] and I'm going to throw it away over a piece of ass?" And a lot of people do. But he wises up before it's too late. It'a lite hearted trip.

2 out of 5 stars The Woman in Trouble.......2005-01-22

This mildly amusing story is dragged down by an un-funny Gene - he just can't pull this one out with his usual "dumb act." This flick would be a big zero if it weren't for Kelli's looks (...)

5 out of 5 stars A Blockbuster!.......2004-12-09

Yep this is truly one of the most movies that's been put the same year I was born 1984. Like to say, this is a more comedy classic which I would say it features my favorite comedienne of all-time, the late Gilda Radner.

I actually love this movie since I picked up the soundtrack to the film by my man Stevie Wonder who earned an Oscar for his hit song "I Just Called To Say I Love You". Ol' Stevie put out a soundtrack that is phenomenal.

It has a all-star cast incl. Charles Grodin, Judith Ivey, Kelly Le Brock, Joseph Bolonga, and most definitely Gene Wilder (who wrote, direct, and star in this feature film).

I first purchase this on VHS one time and maybe one day I'll own it on both DVD and VHS. I officially lost the video so can't wait to get another one.

First of all, this is my favorite picture I watch when I was 11 years old or somethin' like that.

4 out of 5 stars The title says it all!.......2004-09-24

Funnyman Gene Wilder delivers an awesome performance in this film. Kelly Le Brock plays the title role. Even Charles Grodin and the late Gilda Radner give great moral support. There's an incredible soundtrack of songs by R&B legend Stevie Wonder. One of them is his biggest all-time hit,I JUST CALLED TO SAY I LOVE YOU. He even performed a few bars of the hit song on an episode of NBC's The Cosby Show which he guest-starred as himself. I like IT'S YOU,Stevie's duet with Dionne Warwick. Some songs were performed solo by Warwick. One of them is MOMENTS AREN'T MOMENTS,which also appeared on her 1985 album,FRIENDS.
