A pre-superstardom Russell Crowe brings enough leading-man wattage to this modest Canadian drama to light all of Manitoba. Set in the prairie country above Minnesota in 1942, For the Moment's wartime romance stars Crowe as Lachlan, a rakish Australian pilot signed on to the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, which trains fliers for combat duty. With an average life expectancy of the program's graduates no more than six weeks, Lachlan wastes no time wooing the attractive and lonely Lill (Christianne Hirt), wife of a farmer-turned-soldier serving overseas. The two fall in love, and their touching if secretive affair serves as a counterpoint to a more public, and tender, romance between the town's prostitute and Lachlan's commanding officer. Writer-director Aaron Kim Johnston eschews bathos for a graceful, even stately, tone to his tale of loneliness and loss. The staggeringly charming, dashing Crowe, however, makes For the Moment compelling. --Tom Keogh
Description
Western Canada, 1942. A handsome Australian named Lachlan (Russell Crowe of The Quick and the Dead, Virtuosity, Gladiator) and other pilots in-training from around the world have the earth below them and a dark cloud over their heads: the life expectancy of a World War ll bomber pilot is six weeks. Now more than ever these brave young men reach out to seize the day. And with each day, loves can form, hearts can break, memories can be forged that will last generations. This "gorgeous-looking, romantic drama" (The Hollywood Reporter) explores the tender wartime romance between Lachlan and a lonely Manitoba farm girl (Christianne Hirt). It glows with the heart-tugging passion of a love that's inevitable yet doomed, and like the pilots and lives it celebrates, it soars.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars For The Moment.......2007-06-26

Good heartwarming story. I recommend it highly. Russell Crowe's early attempt at acting was a complete success.

4 out of 5 stars Sentimentality inside the "Aerodrome of Democracy".......2006-09-23

This was how President Franklin Roosevelt described Canada, the seemingly perfect location to train Royal Air Force and Canadian Royal Air Force pilots in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, a large and successful military pilot training program during World War Two. Russell Crowe delivers an impressive performance as a young bomber pilot in training who woos a local married woman with his looks and charm. As a war film buff, I do not really care for all the sentimentality (no matter how well acted) but I must praise this obscure low-budget Canadian film for bringing to light an important aspect of the Allied war effort which took place in quiet rural Manitoba. This movie is set during the early years of WWII since it included a few American trainees, one of whom is an arrogant, rude and lecherous villian who is the opposite of Russell Crowe's mild-mannered Australian character. Choosing an American to be the movie's villian seemed a bit contrived to me, but there was around 1759 Americans in the RAF who transferred to the US military when America finally entered the war. When watching the movie, or just looking at the DVD cover, one will notice that the air force uniform has a much DARKER SHADE OF BLUE than the familiar RAF uniforms seen in "Battle of Britain". This was something that my eyes had to get used to when watching this sentimental but nonetheless interesting film.

4 out of 5 stars Canadians were once proud people.......2005-09-21

For The Moment reminds us that Canada once was a proud nation who pulled its own weight. [...]. A much younger Russell Crowe portrays an Australian pilot who is undergoing further training in Manitoba, Canada during WWII. He eventually begins an affair with a woman whose husband has already departed for combat. The relationship is likely doomed from the start. Will Crowe's character even survive the war? Most pilots are killed within months after their departure. The people around these illicit lovers also have their own troubles. Should everyone live for the immediate present? Is there logical reason to invest in a long term future hopes?

Russell Crowe is now one of our greatest film actors. He doesn't get much of a chance to show his ability in this movie. Crowe's role essential calls for a paint by the numbers approach. Still, this is a decent production. It aptly deals with the frustrations and challenges of those who saved our civilization from tyranny. WWII buffs should take a chance on For The Moment. I give it 3 1/2 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Pre-Stardum Crowe Soars.......2005-06-15

I didn't havea clue what this movie was about or what it had to offer when I picked it up. All I knew was it starred Russell Crowe and that was all I needed to know. It's set during war times, Crowe plays a pilot in training and while staying with a friend and his fiance he falls for the fiance's married sister. Risky waters there Mr Crowe, but a romance ensues and it leads to an uproar of sorts. Who can blame the young lady. Crowe's charm is undeniable (heck, I'm a heterosexual married man and I'd fall for him...sorry sweetheart) just listen to his redition of "High Flight". Beware all you 'Pearl Harbor' 'Saving Private Ryan' watchers, this is not a war movie even though it's labeled as one. This is a romance film with VERY little action at all. Still, all in all, it's a great film and a must see for any die-hard Russell fan like myself.

5 out of 5 stars Finally the whole movie!.......2004-04-30

If you are a Russell Crowe fan or a fan of the movie you can finally purchase the entire film on dvd from Amazon. I would not recommend purchasing the used dvds without contacting seller as previously this dvd was missing several whole scenes...this re-release is complete. A wonderfully done movie ... it is sad and sweet. A snapshot of one of the lesser known sides of WWII. The characters are endearing and funny, the plot moves along well and there is some wonderful photography. For Crowe fans his recital of "High Flight" is worth the purchase, not to mention a young Mr. Crowe at his most charming. NOt for those looking for an action war movie it is most definitely for the romantics out there.

Whodunnit? That's the question Jack Albany hopes to expose in Disney's 1968 madcap comedy Never a Dull Moment, starring Dick Van Dyke. Albany, a struggling actor in New York, is mistaken for infamous West Coast gangster Ace Williams and whisked to the mansion of mob boss Leo Smooth to be hired as lead mobster in an art museum robbery. Joining the company of a motley group of operators, Albany realizes that his only chances for survival depend on performing the acting job of his life: impersonating a dangerous killer. Things get dicey when the real Ace Williams shows up, since one of this pair of aces is about to be discarded as a joker. Albany's only hope for escape is to convince an innocent art teacher (Dorothy Provine) to become his ally. Combining Van Dyke's physical comedy with a stellar supporting cast (Henry Silva, Slim Pickens, and Jack Elam) make this lesser-known Disney film a delightful family jaunt. 4 out of 5 stars VERY good family movie!.......2007-02-10

We laughed along with this comedy mystery. An all star cast, this movie is an absolute keeper. Can't say much because I do not want to give it away, but if you like wholesome yet entertaining movies that are not filled with filth like so many are now, you will really like this!

2 out of 5 stars Not too bad.......2007-01-16

There are funny moments definitely, but the plot moves slowly and predictably. The first time you watch it, though, it's fine.

5 out of 5 stars Good, Clean, Family Comedy.......2006-12-01

Considering I was a child in the 60's, you could understand why I became a Dick Van Dyke fan primarily to Mary Poppins as opposed to his TV show (it was the 70's when I first saw the TV show in reruns). This movie sealed me being a fan.

An actor is picked up by a gang, thinking he is a vicious hit man. (If you can picture Van Dyke as a hit-man, you can see how funny this movie is.) Edward G. Robinson is excellent as a gangster who still comes across as a father figure to a point.

This movie is rated G. I wish Hollywood would re-investigate this film, and see a movie about gangsters can be funny without sex and violence.

By the way, this movie, one of my all-time favorite comedies, was also my introduction to pop art.

4 out of 5 stars mistaken identity comedy farce..........2005-09-08

Dick Van Dyke stars as struggling TV actor Jack, playing gangsters in hokey weekly series. In a case of mistake identity, a gang member picks up Jack on a street corner thinking he is the out of town hitman he is supposed to pick up for a big job. Taking him to the home of the mob boss, Jack tries to escape. When he realizes that discovery of his true identity means his death, Jack dives into the role of his life, literally. His mistaken identity cover-up is hilarious as he really seems to relish his role as a tough guy, even scaring the other real gangsters. Edward G. Robinson does a marvelous job playing a mob boss that would secretly prefer to be a painter and steals famous art for his own enjoyment instead of to sell. When the real hitman shows up, Jack has to convince the gang that HE is the phony, and stop the robbery. His love interest in the movie is well played by Dorothy Provine.

Disney Studios had high hopes for this film, starring one of their big name actors, and the film has its moments but was not a box office success. The scenes in the Art museum get a little tedious at the end but over all it is enjoyable, and there is some nice art as well. A.J. Carothers wrote the screenplay, after working on several other Disney projects such as "Miracle of the White stallions". The story is based on the book by John Godey. The Disney movie posters promoting the film had a tagline that said, "we're having such a wonderful crime...". Released theatrically on June 26, 1968. It appeared on "The Wonderful World of Disney" in 1979. It was released on video for the first time in 1985, and DVD for the first time in 2005.

4 out of 5 stars Unexpected gem from Disney and Van Dyke!.......2004-07-30

This is a nice little film that seems to be mostly forgotten by Disney fans or fans of Mr. Van Dyke. That's too bad, because the film is lots of fun, and gives Dick Van Dyke full range to showcase his physical comedy skills.

If you thought all there was to Van Dyke's physical comedy was tripping over an ottoman, you'll be able to see his full range here.

An actor mistaken for a crook, Van Dyke's character Jack Albany is taken to a gangster stronghold where a big art heist is being planned. Van Dyke is wonderful as the cowardly actor playing the part of a tough crook in order to stay alive.

Besides the great comedy of Van Dyke, we also have the added treat of Edward G. Robinson sending up his famous gangster image. An avowed art lover in real life, Robinson goes after a famous painting in the film, and even tries his hand at abstract art.

Also on hand are Slim Pickens, Henry Silva, and Jack Elam. Dorothy Provine ("That Darn Cat!") plays art instructor and love interest Sally Inwood.

On a side note, the director of the film, Jerry Paris, is probably best known as Rob and Laura Petrie's next door neighbor on "The Dick Van Dyke Show". Jerry cameos at the very end.

This is great little film, but I have to knock off one star simply because Disney was too cheap to include a commentary track with surviving cast members.

2 out of 5 stars Its Ok it you dont have anything else to watch.......2005-07-29

It was ok, but definitely low budget. The acting was weak but I guess it was entertaining. I was so disappointed when I found out this movie was supposedly based on Brenda Jackson's romance novel "One Special Moment". The only thing in the movie that came close to the book was Sterling Hamilton's name. The plot was totally weak and it really didnt have to turn out that way. The director and screenwriters should have been required to read the book before attempting this movie. The book was perfection and would have made a much better movie than this mess being passed off as art. My advice to BET is make sure the people you hire to do you movie arent to lazy to do their homework. This movie is definitely not worth buying....my advice it rent it or wait for it to come on cable, cause it is truly a waste.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent choice.......2005-01-10

I'd enjoy this movie so well more than the book(which I haven't read or bought yet but I'ma still get ASAP). Yeah Sterling Hamilton (Kirk Taylor) did a very great job on this one, I did he should earn the credit 4 this one. And 'specially Colby Wingate (Tamara Taylor) she was more hot, smooth, sexy and very genuine. Maybe this shoulda won a Academy Award on that day. This movie is telling all the basics what's going on in our community like he had a talent or gift for money, clothes, music, books or whatever, we know God has the ability to give what we want in life. And for the rest of the cast that did it well, i.e. Obba Babatunde, Tavis Smiley (once did a special appearance on this movie), Tico Wells, Michelle Griffin, Shanice Wilson, etc. Every movie fan should have this if they're use to real movies I like. This movie is 'bout this young cat who is a blockbuster action star who craves to fall into a relationship with a brother's sister who wants to be apart of his company along with her brother who is doing the clothing line. Meaning he's making the right explanation or choice to prove it. Right after, he decides that he wasn't making the right decision, so he fired his manager 'cuz it's been bragging him 2 long at the end of the movie y'know. This is definitely a must-see movie. If ya'll aren't watching should check new movies which I'd see are real. For example, So Real, Play'd: A Hip-Hop Story (feat. the late Merlin Santana, R.I.P.), Livin' Large, Nikita Blues, One Week, Alfie (w/ Michael Caine in it), Double Platinum, The Wiz, 30 Years to Life, Motives, etc.

C'mon you gotta love this man. It'll take u far.

5 out of 5 stars "AVID" BET MOVIE COLLECTOR.......2004-03-26

I PURCHASED "ONE SPECIAL MOMENT" BEFORE I READ THE BOOK. I TRULY ENJOYED THE MOVIE MORE THAN THE BOOK. I LIKED THE STERLING CHARACTER BETTER ON FILM AND HOW HE PURSUED THE COLBY CHARACTER. THE ACTING WAS EXCELLENT AS WELL AS THE STORY.
"ONE SPECIAL MOMENT"IS A GREAT ROMANTIC MOVIE TO ADD TO YOUR DVD COLLECTION. I HAVE PURCHASED EVERY ROMANTIC MOVIE BET HAS RELEASED. BET CONTINUE TO DO WHAT YOU DO SO WELL,KEEP ROMANCE ALIVE!!!!

2 out of 5 stars NO ma'am.......2003-07-23

If you have read the book, back away from this DVD. I was very upset at this movie. They made Sterling into a whiny poem reciting punk, and ED into a jerk. Then they made the brother James into a user and his character almost seemed gay. I was horrified as I watched this movie. The book is based off of Sterling wanting a child and going through with a contest to have his baby. Colby visit Sterling to try and help her brother's cosmetic company. The movie has her brother entering her in the contest without her knowledge to help his none existant clothing line. In the book her brother doesn't know anything about how and why they are together until almost the end. Then Colby isn't a virgin like she is in the book, hell they don't even get married in the movie. Then he gets her pregnant and they break up. Sterling whines the ENTIRE film and I mean the ENTIRE film. I mean he goes infront of her class and recites these dumb poems, ugh. Then another character that I love, Diamond, they turned her into a whore I was completely appauled. I can't believe that Brenda Jackson let them make this film. And Where was Kyle he isn't even mentioned in this film.

3 out of 5 stars WHY MESS UP A GREAT BOOK?.......2003-04-18

I may have liked this movie if I hadn't read the book first. It is my honest opinion that if BET wants to make these wonderful books into movies that they should at least follow the blueprint in the book. I read this book by Brenda Jackson and it is one of my favorites. The movie strayed so far from the book that only the names were the same. This is a wonderful story but to feel the full effect, you must read the book. The movie was garbage. A suggestion to BET keep publishing the books and leave the moviemaking to someone else.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible DVD.......2002-02-12

There is not one reason to purchase this DVD. Neither kids or adults will enjoy it. I was hoping for something along the lines of America's Funniest Home Videos (WITHOUT Bob Saget) but it did not even live up to that weak standard. A total disappointment. Avoid at all costs unless you enjoy watching overweight folks perform pig calls at a county fair. That is the type of material (I kid you not) that is on this DVD. I only hope I can get rid of it on eBay so I don't have to look at it in my DVD collection.

4 out of 5 stars Animal Bloopers & Funny Moments.......2001-03-15

This DVD is some what in the style of Americas Funniest Home videos. It's pretty funny, (but no Bob Saget) :-( if you like to see animals doing stupid things, or amazing things! It's kinda like that show on Animal Planet. I recommend this DVD to anyone who can laff at nothing, or everything.
