First film by director Ridley Scott barely got released in this country in the mid-1970s, but stands up, despite the rather noticeable accents of its stars. That's because Brooklynite Harvey Keitel and Westerner Keith Carradine are playing a pair of officers in Napoleon's army--oops! The plot centers on Carradine insulting Keitel and Keitel demanding vengeance. But every time they get into the middle of one of their duels, war breaks out or something else happens to interrupt. Keitel, however, is too pig-headed to let it drop and dogs Carradine over the course of 20 years. Strong performances otherwise and amazing cinematography, as well as a cast that includes Albert Finney, Edward Fox, and Tom Conti. --Marshall Fine

Good Lesson in the difference between Honor and Nobility.......2007-06-27

Fine job by Ridley Scott. The majority of the actors appear to try too hard with their characters; the exception being Harvey Keitel who portrays the antagonist with ease. Good period piece with the hardware to match, impressive hairstyles back then. Lessons learned in Honor abound throughout the movie. But the true noble act that defines the protagonist happens in the end. This should be part of any Ridley Scott collection and for those who would rather settle a disagreement personally.

"A staggeringly beautiful film...".......2007-05-03

This is one of my three or five favorite films. Simple, beautifully filmed, tightly edited. Acting is excellent throughout. The sword choreography is simply the finest and most believable that has ever been done. The only gripe you could have is the somewhat unrealistic accents. Big deal. This is Ridley Scott's finest work. Highly recommended.

Captain d'Hubert was merely performing his assigned duty when he was sent to detain one Major Feraud. It all began, when Feraud killed the mayor of the town in a duel. In Napoleon's army , it was generally impolitic to kill the mayor of the town in which your troops are stationed! So Feraud was to be placed under house-arrest as punishment.
In the course of performing this duty, poor d'Hubert inadvertantly "insulted" the hot-headed, brawling Feraud. The two agreed to fight a duel. Thus began a savage rivalry that lasted for their entire military careers and beyond! This is based on a true story. Feraud would not be satisfied until d'Hubert was dead, and the two fought a number of inconclusive duels with sabre, with years intervening between chance encounters.
On the brutal and tragic 1812 winter retreat from Russia, Feraud finds out that the only man who was willing to help him counter-attack a band of Cossacks...is d'Hubert! His response: "It will be pistols, next time."
