Although it was never known for strict authenticity, the elegant 1953 production of Titanic holds just as much fascination as A Night to Remember and James Cameron's 1997 blockbuster. Its original screenplay deservedly won an OscarĀ® for its brilliant, dramatically involving creation of fictional characters--primarily a strained couple on the verge of divorce (Clifton Webb, Barbara Stanwyck)--whose lives are forever altered on that fateful morning of April 15, 1912. Director Jean Negulesco focuses on this human drama, lending a personal touch to the luxury liner's fatal collision with an iceberg; if the scale-model disaster (complete with motorized miniature lifeboat rowers) looks quaint by modern special-effects standards, it still captures the emotional impact of Titanic's ultimate fate. While Titanic's sinking is inaccurately depicted (here the ship is damaged on the port side, and sinks in one piece), the Webb/Stanwyck relationship is handled with sophistication, style, and well-earned redemption. As would happen with Cameron's Titanic 44 years later, fiction proved a perfect vehicle for tragic factual history. --Jeff Shannon

When the theatrical release of James Cameron's Titanic was delayed from July to December of 1997, media pundits speculated that Cameron's $200-million disaster epic would cause the director's downfall, signal the end of the blockbuster era, and sink Paramount Pictures as quickly as the ill-fated luxury liner had sunk on that fateful night of April 14, 1912. Titanic would surpass the $1-billion mark in global box-office receipts, win 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Director, launch the best-selling movie soundtrack of all time, and make a global superstar of Leonardo DiCaprio. A bona fide pop-cultural phenomenon, the film has all the ingredients of a blockbuster (romance, passion, luxury, grand scale, a snidely villain, and an epic, life-threatening crisis), but Cameron's alchemy of these ingredients proved more popular than anyone could have predicted. His stroke of genius was to combine absolute authenticity with a pair of fictional lovers whose tragic fate would draw viewers into the heart-wrenching reality of the Titanic disaster. As starving artist Jack Dawson and soon-to-be-married socialite Rose DeWitt Bukater, DiCaprio and Kate Winslet won the hearts of viewers around the world, and their brief, but never forgotten, love affair provides the humanity that Cameron needed to turn Titanic into a moving emotional experience. Although some of the computer-generated visual effects look artificial, others--such as the climactic splitting of the ship's sinking hull--are state-of-the-art marvels of cinematic ingenuity. It's an event film and a monument to Cameron's risk-taking audacity, blending the tragic irony of the Titanic disaster with just enough narrative invention to give the historical event its fullest and most timeless dramatic impact. --Jeff Shannon

DVD features
Perhaps James Cameron wasn't ready to dish in 1999 when his mega-hit debuted on DVD with nary an extra (no, we don't count the trailer). Now in 2005, Cameron and his magicians dish on the cutting-edge effects and the craft of the movie. The heart of the extras are over 45 minutes of deleted scenes fans will fawn over, including some dealing with historical backstory (including a scene on the nearby ship California), a great kiss between Jack and Rose, and an extended suspense scene (listen to Cameron's commentary on that one). Happily, the alternate ending was not used (no, Jack doesn't live). The sound has been upgraded (including a DTS 6.1 ES track), the color palate is richer (the interiors glow more), and the picture is anamorphically enhanced for widescreen televisions, although the film is now split onto two discs.

The three-disc set has an abundance of materials; the galleries, for example, contain 628 on-set photos, 447 personal photos from the cinematographer, 532 storyboard sketches, 148 technical drawings, and even a 72-page bibliography. The features on the sets and effects offer some great tidbits, many dealing how everything had to be made versus rented since most items were going to be destroyed on camera.

Cameron is pictured on the box art and his stamp is all over the DVD set. He narrates the deep dive footage, you can read his original "scriptment" (if you want to read though 492 page clicks; some of these extras would have been better on a CD-ROM), and his commentary track is so complete, he covers most of the items the historical experts offer on their own track (they get too caught up in the film to muster more interesting facts). He offers only one apology for a factual "guess" and clears up that "king of the world" riff at the Oscars. The third commentary with most of the key members of the cast and crew is worth a listen but, alas, Leonardo DiCaprio does not contribute to this or any other new feature. Other must-sees: a time-lapse short on the creation of the boat set, and the first-half of a salute to the staff that works as a blooper reel. One caveat: there's a four-disc Region 2 version available in Europe with parodies and other extras, but no one is offering an official reason why it's not offered in the States. --Doug Thomas

Description

Leonardo DiCaprio and Oscar-nominee Kate Winslet light up the screen as Jack and Rose, the young lovers who find one another on the maiden voyage of the "unsinkable" R.M.S. Titanic. But when the doomed luxury liner collides with an iceberg in the frigid North Atlantic, their passionate love affair becomes a thrilling race for survival. From acclaimed filmmaker James Cameron comes a tale of forbidden love and courage in the face of disaster that triumphs as a true cinematic masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars Mixed reactions...........2007-06-30

I have mixed feelings about this film. It has great moments, a genuinely tragic true story, really lame dialogue, an unbelievable sentimental (though effective) "romance", and there are some factual errors in the film (which is not good considering James Cameron bragged about its authenticity). Yet, this film is remarkable in so many ways.

Titanic, by all accounts, should have been a box office disaster. It has many things that the "experts" say will kill your film. First, it's 194 minutes long. Second, it has no stars (Leo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet were not big stars when this was released). Third, it's depressing (the boat sinks...SPOILER). Fourth, it's predictable (the boat sinks...it's a true story). Fifth, it was a troubled production that had its release date postponed due to cost overruns. Yet, it is the biggest box office hit of all time. The look of the film is sumptuous, with great production design, gorgeous cinematography, and excellent acting (for the most part). Tecnhincally, the film is flawless (Cameron is known for his technological prowess). As much as I like DiCaprio, I think he's a bit uncomfortable playing a role like this, but he is still believable. Winslet is superb. One of the best things about the film is how Cameron contrasts the upper deck snobs with the lower deck "lower classes", and how the lower classes are much more human and real than the snotty upper classes are. Themes like that were not in great abundance in the 1990's. There are moments of pure poetry and sadness, especially with the musicians playing on board as the boat goes down.

However, the romance between Winslet and DiCaprio is hokey and detracts from the film a bit. The film also makes a glaring omission that there was a nearby ship that ignored the flares and the calls from the Titanic. I found this out in the film A Night to Remember, which was far more meticulous about the actual sinking and the reasons behind it. This film was more about the romance between Winslet and DiCaprio. There is an awful lot of really bad dialogue here, which also detracts. Interestingly enough, the only main categories this film didn't get nominated in was screenplay (which Cameron, rather pigheadedly, complained about), and best actor (which DiCaprio didn't show up at the Oscars, which caused some controversy, unwarranted in my opinion).

In conclusion, this is a pretty good film that should be seen. James Cameron made a film that defied all expectations, and won a bunch of Oscars for it. To date, he hasn't directed a feature film (10 years and counting), and he may never do it again. This film took a lot out of him, like Fitzcarraldo and Apocalypse Now did out of Herzog and Coppola (although those films are superior to Titanic).

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD for Filmakers.......2007-06-28

I saw this movie back in December of 97. I had knowledge of the Titanic and I asked myself 'Do we really need another movie about this subject? James Cameron did a remarkable job and I loved this movie. The 3 disc DVD-let me suggest that any budding filmmaker rather young, in between or old should purchase this DVD. Cameron gives great insight on how to make a movie. The precise and intricate planning, his great writing. His technical expertise and great cinematography. A hands on director no doubt. He can do it all. He is a well educated and intelligent man that knows how to work. Unlike alot of them these days who got their big positions based on who they were related to. Filmakers should pay close attention to his subject on pacing, as a writer myself, the advice on this technique is still the same. I learned quite a bit.

Thank You James Cameron for this fantastic DVD.

I was one of many who did not run to theaters to see this film when released. I didn't want to spend over three hours watching a film I knew the ending to. I have since built a state of the art theater in my home with a 10 foot screen. This movies lives up to the hype and is a fine example of how to tell a story. A long movie that doesn't feel that long with exceptional cast, script and FX. Well worth buying the special edition DVD.

Some studio executives were confident, others horrified, but the clarity of hindsight turned Cameron into an Oscar-winning genius, a shrewd businessman, and one of the most successful directors in the history of motion pictures. Titanic would surpass the $1 billion mark in global box-office receipts (largely due to multiple viewings, the majority by teenage girls), win 11 Academy Awards including best picture and director, produce the best-selling movie soundtrack of all time, and make a global superstar of Leonardo DiCaprio. Present-day framing scenes (featuring Gloria Stuart as the 101-year-old Rose) add additional resonance to the story, and although some viewers proved vehemently immune to Cameron's manipulations, few can deny the production's impressive achievements. Although some of the computer-generated visual effects look artificial, others--such as the sunset silhouette of Titanic during its first evening at sea, or the climactic splitting of the ship's sinking hull--are state-of-the-art marvels. In terms of sets and costumes alone, the film is never less than astounding. More than anything else, however, the film's overwhelming popularity speaks for itself. Titanic is an event film and a monument to Cameron's risk-taking audacity, blending the tragic irony of the Titanic disaster with just enough narrative invention to give the historical event its fullest and most timeless dramatic impact. Titanic is an epic love story on par with Gone with the Wind, and like that earlier box-office phenomenon, it's a film for the ages. --Jeff Shannon

2 out of 5 stars It sinks.......2007-06-30

Like this film there really were a J. Dawson and Tommy Ryan aboard the Titanic. But they were both members of the Crew and they both drowned. And this pretty much says it all about this film in its historical accuracy.

I watched this one while puppy sitting. And I don't have much to say for it other than watching one of the pups look me in the eye and piss on the carpet in front of me as I watched this film more entertaining.

Wonderful costuming. Beutiful and very accurate sets. (These are why I don't give it just One Star). Good acting but a lousy class warfare driven story and an awful plot with characters who are absolutely too two dimensional to believe.

And what is this story? A 'salvage'/preservation effort at looting the Titanic turns up a drawing of a naked girl wearing a valuable diamond. And then the story follows. She's a seventeen year old girl sold into matrimonial slavery by her fortune hunting mother to a nasty rich kid who is taking her back to missery in Pittsburg. He's a smoking drinking gambling bohemian American expatriate artist on his way home to a questionable future recently from the Left bank of Paris where he drew naked women who dies in the end but 'frees' her. Everyone poor is portrayed virtuous. Everyone rich is portrayed as bad, selfish, greedy arrogant and snobbish. Which is an insult to the men like John Jacob Astor who died giving up their places on the life boats for poor women to board saying Women and Children First.

And it really sucks.

They can't even get their math up on the Lifeboats ratio to passenghers. Titanic was designed to carry more than three thousand five hundred passengers and crew while her lifeboat capacty was less than one thousand two hundred. Through poor organization they didn't even use that capacity rather than what this film implies.

No scenes really impressed me much beyond scenery and costuming but if there is one scene that really disgusts me it is that of the crew holding third class passengers at bay and at gun point as first class passengers board the lifeboats. Next to that it is Murdoch shooting third class passengers trying to get to the last boats, something he did not do.

Overall this film is a BIG BIG disapointment.

p.s- I KNO THE TITANIC REALLY SANK AND BLABLABLA(REST IN PEACE) BUT WERE JACK AND ROSE REALLY PASSENGERS, OR DID THEY JUST THROW THEM IN 2 MAKE IT GOOD?

3 out of 5 stars sappy.......2007-02-17

i like anything to do with titanic, and i love the graphics, but the characters are pretty annoying, especially jack. the characters aren't beleivable, and rose, sixteen years old, is way to mature (both physically and mentally) for her age. I'm 15 years old; i should know this. they tuned what could have been a moving story about the greatest ship of all time but they had to ruin it and make it into a sappy love story.

The tragedy of the Titanic has fascinated all since she sank with 1,500 of her passengers and crew in 1912. Much later, scientist Robert Ballard set out to find and explore the wreck, despite difficulties of depth and location. Using the research submarine Alvin and a remote-controlled underwater robot, he was the first human in over 70 years to see the giant resting beneath the North Atlantic waves. Secrets of the Titanic tells the story of the events leading up to the sinking using footage and photographs from the doomed maiden voyage and then follows the luckier Dr. Ballard through the steps leading to his discovery. As usual for National Geographic, the photography is excellent, even within the cramped confines of the tiny Alvin. The first views of the Titanic's interior are truly spectacular, especially when contrasted with vintage photos, and the excitement of Ballard and his crew is contagious. The spirit and joys of discovery are well captured and the viewer is reminded that the world is still teeming with opportunities for adventure. --Rob Lightner

4 out of 5 stars Secrets Review.......2007-05-12

This is one of the cornerstone movies for Titanic "buffs." Although it doesn't get into depth about the hows and whys and the different theories surrounding the sinking of the ill-fated liner, there is a strong emphasis on deep-sea exploration. A lot of good footage of the ship is there too, but remember, it was filmed in 1986, so it's not HD. :)

Great for the classroom.

Of all the many documentaries that have been made about the Titanic disaster, this two-part, 192-minute film, produced in 1994 for the Arts & Entertainment network, remains the most thorough, authoritative, and fascinating chronicle of the Titanic tragedy. Written, produced, and directed by Melissa Jo Peltier and elegantly narrated by actor David McCallum, the film utilizes thorough research, archival films and documents, and expert testimony to span the entire history of the legendary S.S. Titanic. From blueprint design and construction in Ireland, to the ill-fated maiden voyage and the lasting legacy of Titanic's fateful sinking, no detail has been neglected in the film's meticulous description of events. Part 1, "The Death of a Dream," builds dramatic momentum to the ship's collision with an iceberg in the freezing North Atlantic, including detailed accounts of the agonizing two-hour sinking and the rescue of survivors. Part 2, "The Legend Lives On," explores the investigation into Titanic's sinking, the impact on later ship design and the dramatic rediscovery of Titanic's ghostly remains on the ocean floor. Parts 1 and 2 include abundant interviews with such noted Titanic authorities as Don Lynch and Ken Marschall (consultants on the blockbuster movie Titanic), and several Titanic survivors who have since passed away. The cumulative effect of this detailed film is a complete appreciation for the sheer irony, drama, and magnitude of the Titanic disaster. The James Cameron film was certainly entertaining, but this superior documentary proves that truth can be every bit as absorbing as fictionalized history. It's an essential addition to any Titanic buff's library. --Jeff Shannon

This is by far the best Titanic documentary I've seen, and I have seen quite a few. To me, it is more entertaining than any of the Titanic movies, or any of the other documentaries; And, it can take you from a Titanic novice to an expert in 3-4 hours.
The expert accounts are plentiful - from survivors to historians and enthusiasts. The son of Stanley Lord even has a spot in there.
If you find Titanic interesting, you must have a copy of this set. It is the most complete account of the Titanic story that I have found. I loved it!

5 out of 5 stars I Really Enjoyed This DVD Set.......2007-01-09

After seeing the Titanic Exhibit in Las Vegas, the tragedy of the Titanic was brought to life to me.

I love the 1997 film, but I knew very little about the real story of the Titanic.

This set is a fantastic introduction to anyone who wants to know more about the Titanic and needs a starting point.

Each of the 3 DVDs is informative and interesting.

It was chilling to see and hear the survivors of the disaster and to hear interviews of leaders of the search for the wreckage and the authors of books.

I also love the paintings of the disaster. They are beautiful and seem to bring that fateful night to life!

I strongly recommend this series for any interested adult like me or for educational purposes.

This set would be a great library addition for anyone homeschooling their child.

It belongs in every public library and school.

One other item: The 1997 film is quite accurate as far as the story goes -- of course there were no Jack nor Rose.

3 out of 5 stars Titanic was out of luck, so was I .......2006-05-30

I ordered and received a copy of this DVD boxed set. When it arrived I found that there were 2 DVDs, played the first it was good. My wife and started to watch the second DVD and found that the second disc was identical to the first. Sent them back and asked for replacement set. They arrived. You guessed it, same story again. Amazon let me keep this set and credited my Visa A/C. Seems like poor quality control at A&E. I just want a complete set. Anyone else had this problem?

5 out of 5 stars Compelling and Fascinating.......2006-02-21

The Titanic is a compelling film about the real life story of H.M.S. Titanic. The story is detailed and moving and provides Titanic lovers with a perspective of the agony and suffering that passengers of this great ship endured during its last moments. For those interested in maritime safety or just interested in knowing the story behind the Titanic tragedy, this is a highly recommended movie.

For those not familiar with the history of this great liner, a brief narration may help. The Titanic was launched in Belfast in May 1911. A magazine at the time described it as "practically unsinkable".

The liner was impressive in its size and features. She was 269 metres long, 28 metres wide and as tall as an eleven storey building. The luxury of the ship was unique and unparalleled at the time. Among the luxury features was a swimming pool for first class passengers, the first to be built on a liner.

The Titanic set sail from Southampton on 10 April 1912. On 14 April 1912, a look out man sounded the alarm bells and announced an iceberg just ahead of them. Unfortunately, it was too late and the ship collided with the iceberg and within some few seconds, the starboard side of the liner was torn open and seawater poured in.

Sadly, there were not enough lifeboats on board and only a small fraction of the passengers (largely those travelling first class) were rescued and almost all those in third class were not rescued. The ship's band continued to play during the commotion that followed and as the stern of the ship rose high and the ship began to sink. Over 1500 people perished in this accident.

Among the critical lessons that we learn from this tragedy is the need to have an effective safety management system. Thankfully, many of the lessons learnt in the tragedy helped the regulatory authorities, manufacturers and ship owners to come up with design and operational features that have made liners much safer.

5 out of 5 stars Great detail...fascinating!.......2005-05-02

I purchased this for my 9 year old as he is obsessed with the tragedy of the Titanic sinking in 1912. We both were fascinated by it. Great Job A&E. I watched it with my son and have already repeated watching the second disc the very next day myself! It is awesome and really detailed. It is hard to believe some of the facts that had to do with the "times" such as class distinctions, also equally disturbing that even that as gallant as it was and appropriate in those times for "women and children first" to be saved, the tragedy left the rescued women instant widows in a time that was very difficult as it was pre-sufferget, also not to mention fatherless children and the horrible fact that most 3rd class passengers (if not all of them) perished, women, children and men. They left no stone unturned in this presentation. I would highly recommend this DVD to anyone really seeking facts about that night and the history and politics involved afterward, with the trials of Ismay and also Captian Lord (Captain from the ship accused of not responding to the Titanic's distress flares). It takes you from the beginning of the Titanic in Belfast Ireland to the sinking and rescue of the survivors in the life boats and bringing them to New York. There are personal quotes from passengers as written to loved ones and still photographs taken on the ship prior to the night of April 14th. The show also includes footage of commentary from living survivors today, that add another dimension to the presentation, which makes it so much more real, as well as commentary from Titanic historians and book authors (one inparticular Walter Lord "A Night To Remember" who had interviewed survivors years ago before some of them passed away). Then leads you up to the finding of the sunken ship in the 1980's. I think they covered it all. It is the most complete account in every way of anything I have seen or read on the Titanic so far. Excellent!

All though a little on the fiction side I think that Raise the Titanic is a movie worth watching. I also think my man Friday was worth watching as well

3 out of 5 stars Raise is a good movie/Couldn't finish Man Friday.......2007-06-03

RAISE THE TITANIC is a good movie. It stands the test of time pretty well and is worth watching. I watched the first few minutes of MAN FRIDAY and had to stop (nothing against Richard Roundtree, but his singing isn't worth my time).

5 out of 5 stars Good movie.......2007-03-09

Saw "Raise the Titanic", great old movie. haven't seen Man Friday yet.
So far no problems :)

5 out of 5 stars Good News and Bad News.......2007-01-12

I purchased this DVD soley for Raise the Titanic which I saw on TV several years ago. While the DVD quality isn't top notch I still enjoyed the movie. As for Man Friday - well, I turned it off early and don't intend to ever watch it all the way through. It's too bad they had to put in on the same DVD. I would rate this 5 stars for Raise the Titanic only. The scale doesn't go low enough for Man Friday (at least the part I did watch).

2 out of 5 stars If there is no other option.......2007-01-04

I would recomend this title if you have to have this movie. I bought it for the Titanic title since there is no other way to have it by its own. The quality of the picture is at most "fair", the audio is in the same category. Like I said, I just buoght it because I loved the movie and the score. So there you have it. As soon as there is a remastered version I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Although it was never known for strict authenticity, the elegant 1953 production of Titanic holds just as much fascination as A Night to Remember and James Cameron's 1997 blockbuster. Its original screenplay deservedly won an Oscar® for its brilliant, dramatically involving creation of fictional characters--primarily a strained couple on the verge of divorce (Clifton Webb, Barbara Stanwyck)--whose lives are forever altered on that fateful morning of April 15, 1912.

Description

Unhappily married and uncomfortable with life among the British upper crust, Julia Sturges takes her two children and boards the Titanic for America. Her husband Richard also arranges passage on the doomed luxury liner in order to let him have custody of their two children. Their problems soon seem minor when the ship hits an iceberg.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of All..........2007-06-03

the Titanic movies. I first saw this in the late '50s when I was nine or ten. My Titanic interest had developed after I saw the Hallmark Hall of Fame live broadcast of Walter Lord's "Night to Remember" when I was even younger. I have seen this movie so many times I can recite the dialogue and tell you all the flaws - there are a few - like the pictures hanging in the officers' dining room. They are all photos of ships built after the Titanic sank! Anyway, buy this one and appreciate it for the great acting, superb dialog and costumes.

4 out of 5 stars The Old Titanic.......2007-03-12

I find the old pictures have a higher standard of acting, this CD reinforces my belief. The film is in black and white but this does not detract from the strength of the performances by Clifton Webb, Barbara Stanwyc and Audrey Dalton. I highly recommend this movie to those that appreciate good old fashioned entertainment; without gratuitous violence.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-01-10

If you enjoy movies about the Titanic, Barbara Stanwyck, Clifton Webb, and Robert Wagner then you will like this movie. Not only do you have the drama surrounding the sinking of the ship but the story of survival for a family torn apart.

3 out of 5 stars Strike a berg with a song on your lips........2006-11-03

Best part of the whole film was that of college kids singing the Williams College fight song, "Yard by Yard", as the Titanic strikes the iceberg.

5 out of 5 stars Hooked on Titanic Made in 1953.......2006-10-14

I just bought the film on DVD through Amazon for a very reasonable price. I previously owned it on VHS and have seen it many times. What makes this film great is the "human" quality that it possesses through all of its characters. The greatest of them all is Barbara Stanwyck who very convincingly relates her disdain for high-society living and her desire to return to America. All of her lines in the movie are interesting and compelling and her talent as a dramatic actress was used expertly. Clifton Webb is also excellent and the marital tension between "Julia" and "Richard" Sturges is the overriding theme. Webb is a brilliant actor and was perfect for the role. All of the other actors and actresses are superb including Robert Wagner who in a very touching manner falls in love with the Sturges' daughter "Annette" played by Audrey Dalton. Richard Basehart who plays an alcoholic priest "Father Healy" significantly adds to the drama as he has fallen away from God and is deeply ashamed of himself. The British actors that portray the Titanic's captain and officers are flawless as well. Finally, as the title of my review states I'm "Hooked on Titanic made in 1953" which is a truly great film with riveting human drama.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Eye Opener.......2006-05-24

I am here on this beautiful Island of Curacao in the Carribean.
There's an international Dive Festival Going on from May 20th, till May 26th 2006.

And John and Richie are here!!

Premiering the release of their DVD!! They showed it too us in 2 parts and all I can say is that it's the best thing on titanic I've ever seen !!

If you've never heard of Titanic, then where have you been living? One of history's most captivating tragedies, the sinking of the Titanic draws countless numbers to learn more about the catastrophe. That fateful trip is absolutely fascinating, and I've watched a great many documentaries about that famed ship. A glorious super liner, Titanic is perhaps more famous today than it was in 1912.

As a result, most of us know what led to its sinking, either from the movie or from documentaries. This latest entry into the fold from The History Channel, Titanic's Final Moments: Missing Pieces has a new postulation on the now generally accepted theory of the ship's demise. That current theory states that Titanic saw an iceberg straight in its path. It tried to turn to miss it, but the big ship clipped the side of the iceberg, tearing a gash or a series of small gashes along its side. Water flooded in, filling enough watertight compartments to cause her to go down. As remarkably shown in Titanic, the nose of the ship went under first, causing the stern to rise above the water. At some point, something caused the ship to split in half, causing the stern to crash back to the water. The nose then quickly went under, pulling the stern deep down to the bottom of the Atlantic.

Five years ago, an expedition to explore the wreckage made an interesting discovery south of the stern's debris field. They said they found "long strips of metal." Unfortunately, the submersible's camera equipment malfunctioned and they had no proof of what they saw. But this set in motion a new theory. Maybe these long strips were from the bottom of the ship. If so, then Titanic just didn't graze the side of the iceberg, but it actually ran over part of the iceberg too. We learn that an iceberg does not go straight down below the water (like a cliff); instead, the water causes the iceberg to form a shelf below the water. Hence, it's now theorized that Titanic somewhat ran aground on the iceberg. If so, in addition to the gashes on the side, maybe there was also significant damage on the bottom, explaining how the ship sank in less than three hours. If that were true, it could also explain why the front of the ship is relatively intact while the stern is crushed upon itself.

Now that I've told you all that, is there any reason to watch the special? Hell yeah!! The two-hour special shows you the 2005 expedition to look for these strips of metal to add proof to the theory. It's an interesting journey, one that's fun to watch to see what is or isn't found/learned. The expedition, once we get to the bits where the "long strips of metal" are either found or not found, is the most exciting piece on the DVD.

I liked the special. It is well done, just sit tight and keep your eyes open for on of the most exciting journeys down to explore the titanic.

Included on the disc are two bonus items. Starting things off is the wholly unforgettable, PR fluff piece "History in the Making: Titanic" (5 minutes). This is one of those filler pieces probably shown on The History Channel to get people to watch the show when it premiered.

Faring infinitely better is the second item, "History's Mysteries: Doomed Sisters of the Titanic" (42 minutes). This is a complete episode of History's Mysteries that details the unfortunate careers of the White Star Line's trio of sister ships, Olympic, Titanic, and Brittanic. This episode, without as much historical repetition, is fascinating and I learned much about the apparently cursed ships.

All in all, you get your money's worth, and it's surely some thing you'd like to add to your DVD collection!!

while not in the same league as the blockbuster movie, this t.v. version isn't that bad. it is a little slow at first but the second part(the sinking ) is well done and is even filmed in almost real time. not great but not as poor as some think. check it out for yourself, at $6.95 what have you got to lose.

1 out of 5 stars Music.......2006-11-29

Is the music in this movie as touching as the music in James Cameron's film?

2 out of 5 stars The problem with this movie..........2006-05-15

...is that it is so heavily dramatic from beginning to end. It's so "black and white" if you get my meaning, the story doesn't manage to involve the viewer (me at least). Where James Cameron managed to bring the characters in his 97th masterpiece to life (we got to really "know" Jack and Rose), and that was why it was hard to breathe at the end of it, in this movie the characters look like they've already hit an iceberg long before the ship leaves port, and you'd like to put them out of their misery yourself. I realize that this is no big budget movie, but an impressive cast list such as here should count too. And this is a bad recepy for telling a gripping story about the disaster Titanic indeed was. The ship sinks, and you sigh "Finally!"...

I've suffered myself through a couple of books involving the fate of the ship making the exact same mistake. Most readers and viewers know what will happen, the travellers aboard the Titanic do (and did!) not -and this really makes a big point.

I must add the acting here does not look very inspired (is Zeta-Jones an Academy-winner?). George C. Scott could have played the captain in James Camerons' masterpiece instead, the only actor here who delievers. And it's nearly wasted.

So if you're a Titanic-fan (or call it what you want) this would be worth a peek, but it is nothing remembarable.

2 out of 5 stars THIS MOVIE STRUCK A BERG. PUN INTENDED........2005-11-15

From a casting viewpoint, this TV movie has a lot to offer. Great cast. From a plot viewpoint, this movie went down with the ship. I absolutely agree with other reviewers that the rape scene was totally unnecessary. I guess with so many versions of the Titanic story already told, the film makers needed something to make this version stand out. Unfortunately, the brutal rape of a young immigrant girl was a very bad choice as a plot variant. This production makes one realize that there already exist quite a sufficient number of movies on this subject. I mean, in the end, the ship sinks and people die. Tragic, yes, but I think we all get it by now. Enough already.

Titanic [Hallmark/American Zetrope Production]
2004 Released DVD, 180 Minutes.
Originally a made for television 2 part film.
Both parts on are on one DVD. Approx. 90 minutes each.
Stars (a young) Catherine Zeta-Jones, Peter Gallagher, Marilu Henner, George C. Scott, Eva Marie Saint, Mike Doyle, Sonsee Ahray, Felicity Waterman. Directed by Robert Lieberman. The film is Unrated. The DVD insert claims 'rated for all ages', but there is sex scenes and a rape scene. The special effects are very good, though not as elaborate as the James Cameron film version. This film is very well acted and I found the story line more interesting than the 'dwelling on one love story/chick flick' Cameron version. If only the amazing special effects and this films story line were combined as one....

Braveheart
Mel Gibson's Oscar-winning 1995 Braveheart is an impassioned epic about William Wallace, the 13th-century Scottish leader of a popular revolt against England's tyrannical Edward I (Patrick McGoohan). Gibson cannily plays Wallace as a man trying to stay out of history's way until events force his hand, an attribute that instantly resonates with several of the actor's best-known roles, especially Mad Max. The subsequent camaraderie and courage Wallace shares in the field with fellow warriors is pure enough and inspiring enough to bring envy to a viewer, and even as things go wrong for Wallace in the second half, the film does not easily cave in to a somber tone. One of the most impressive elements is the originality with which Gibson films battle scenes, featuring hundreds of extras wielding medieval weapons. After Eisenstein's Alexander Nevsky, Orson Welles's Chimes at Midnight, and even Kenneth Branagh's Henry V, you might think there is little new that could be done ! in creating scenes of ancient combat; yet Gibson does it. --Tom Keogh

American Beauty
From its first gliding aerial shot of a generic suburban street, American Beauty moves with a mesmerizing confidence and acuity epitomized by Kevin Spacey's calm narration. Spacey is Lester Burnham, a harried Everyman whose midlife awakening is the spine of the story, and his very first lines hook us with their teasing fatalism--like Sunset Boulevard's Joe Gillis, Burnham tells us his story from beyond the grave. It's an audacious start for a film that justifies that audacity. Weaving social satire, domestic tragedy, and whodunit into a single package, Alan Ball's first theatrical script dares to blur generic lines and keep us off balance, winking seamlessly from dark, scabrous comedy to deeply moving drama. The Burnham family joins the cinematic short list of great dysfunctional American families, as Lester is pitted against his manic, materialistic realtor wife, Carolyn (Annette Bening, making the most of a mostly unsympathetic role) and his sullen, contemptuous tee! naged daughter, Jane (Thora Birch, utterly convincing in her edgy balance of self-absorption and wistful longing). Into their lives come two catalytic outsiders. A young cheerleader (Mena Suvari) jolts Lester into a sexual epiphany that blooms into a second adolescence. And an eerily calm young neighbor (Wes Bentley) transforms both Lester and Jane with his canny influence. Credit another big-screen newcomer, English theatrical director Sam Mendes, with expertly juggling these potentially disjunctive elements into a superb ensemble piece that achieves a stylized pace without lapsing into transparent self-indulgence. Mendes has shrewdly insured his success with a solid crew of stage veterans, yet he's also made an inspired discovery in Bentley, whose Ricky Fitts becomes a fulcrum for both plot and theme. Cinematographer Conrad Hall's sumptuous visual design further elevates the film, infusing the beige interiors of the Burnhams' lives with vivid bursts of deep crimson, the c! olor of roses--and of blood. --Sam Sutherland

Gladiator
A big-budget summer epic with money to burn and a scale worthy of its golden Hollywood predecessors, Ridley Scott's Gladiator is a rousing, grisly, action-packed epic that takes moviemaking back to the Roman Empire via computer-generated visual effects. While not as fluid as the computer work done for, say, Titanic, it's an impressive achievement that will leave you marveling at the glory that was Rome, when you're not marveling at the glory that is Russell Crowe. Starring as the heroic general Maximus, Crowe firmly cements his star status both in terms of screen presence and acting chops, carrying the film on his decidedly non-computer-generated shoulders as he goes from brave general to wounded fugitive to stoic slave to gladiator hero. Gladiator's plot is a whirlwind of faux-Shakespearean machinations of death, betrayal, power plays, and secret identities (with lots of faux-Shakespearean dialogue ladled on to keep the proceedings appropriately "classical"), ! but it's all briskly shot, edited, and paced with a contemporary sensibility. Even the action scenes, somewhat muted but graphic in terms of implied violence and liberal bloodletting, are shot with a veracity that brings to mind--believe it or not--Saving Private Ryan, even if everyone is wearing a toga. As Crowe's nemesis, the evil emperor Commodus, Joaquin Phoenix chews scenery with authority, whether he's damning Maximus's popularity with the Roman mobs or lusting after his sister Lucilla (beautiful but distant Connie Nielsen); Oliver Reed, in his last role, hits the perfect notes of camp and gravitas as the slave owner who rescues Maximus from death and turns him into a coliseum star. Director Scott's visual flair is abundantly in evidence, with breathtaking shots and beautiful (albeit digital) landscapes, but it's Crowe's star power that will keep you in thrall--he's a true gladiator, worthy of his legendary status. Hail the conquering hero! --Mark Englehart

Terms of Endearment
Larry McMurtry's novel becomes a somewhat lumpy film as directed by James L. Brooks (As Good As It Gets). Nevertheless, it is entirely winning, with Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger playing a combative mother and daughter who see each other through various ups and downs in love and loss, and most especially through a terminal illness endured by Winger's character. Jack Nicholson deservedly won an Oscar for his supporting role as a free-spirited astronaut who backs away from a romance with MacLaine and then returns in the clutch. As he always does, Brooks keeps things from getting too soapy with his intense concentration on the soulful evolution of his characters. --Tom Keogh

The Godfather
Generally acknowledged as a bona fide classic, this Francis Ford Coppola film is one of those rare experiences that feels perfectly right from beginning to end--almost as if everyone involved had been born to participate in it. Based on Mario Puzo's bestselling novel about a Mafia dynasty, Coppola's Godfather extracted and enhanced the most universal themes of immigrant experience in America: the plotting-out of hopes and dreams for one's successors, the raising of children to carry on the good work, etc. In the midst of generational strife during the Vietnam years, the film somehow struck a chord with a nation fascinated by the metamorphosis of a rebellious son (Al Pacino) into the keeper of his father's dream. Marlon Brando played against Puzo's own conception of patriarch Vito Corleone, and time has certainly proven the actor correct. The rest of the cast, particularly James Caan, John Cazale, and Robert Duvall as the rest of Vito's male brood--all coping with how ! to take the mantle of responsibility from their father--is seamless and wonderful. --Tom Keogh

Titanic
His stroke of genius was to combine absolute authenticity with a pair of fictional lovers whose tragic f! ate would draw viewers into the heart-wrenching reality of the Titanic disaster.

Forrest Gump
The Academy Award winner for Best Picture, Best Director Robert Zemeckis, and Best Actor Tom Hanks, this unlikely story of a slow-witted but good-hearted man somehow at the center of the pivotal events of the 20th century is a funny and heartwarming epic. Hanks plays the title character, a shy Southern boy in love with his childhood best friend (Robin Wright) who finds that his ability to run fast takes him places. As an All-Star football player he meets John F. Kennedy; as a soldier in Vietnam he's a war hero; and as a world champion Ping-Pong player he's hailed by Richard Nixon. Becoming a successful shrimp-boat captain, he still yearns for the love of his life, who takes a quite different and much sadder path in life. The visual effects incorporating Hanks into existing newsreel footage is both funny and impressive, but the heart of the film lies in its sweet love story and in the triumphant performance of Hanks as an unassuming soul who savors the most from his life and times. --Robert Lane

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-06-16

This package of Best Pictures is definitely a great buy. You can not beat the price for this package of first rate movies that any two would easily cost. Not to be missed.

4 out of 5 stars Buy it Used, if possible........2007-03-07

A great buy for 20 bucks used! Bare boned releases with few extras except Forrest Gump, which is the 2 disc version. All of the films are 16 X 9 enhanced for widescreen EXCEPT Titanic! Very annoying!!

5 out of 5 stars Collection of modern best picture winners that actually made money.......2007-02-01

It's rare these days for the Oscar winner for Best Picture to be something that actually drew a sizable audience. This is a pretty good collection of seven more modern movies that did just that.

"The Godfather", the oldest of the bunch (1972), holds up the best over time. In cinematography, casting, acting, and plot it is simply perfect. "Terms of Endearment" (1983) is a different kind of mother/daughter story than you usually see on screen - the kind where the mother holds the daughter in only "medium esteem". "Forrest Gump" (1994) just defies categorization. Forrest is a zen-like character with limited intelligence who manages to stumble into every major world event of his lifetime and come out on top. Even though it was adapted from a popular novel, on film it could have as easily bombed as it could have been the blockbuster it became. "Braveheart" (1995) is a great film about man's desire for freedom trumping everything else, even his desire to live.

1997's "Titanic" made the most money and won many Academy awards that year, but personally, I feel as time passes, it will probably be considered one of the cheesier films to win the Academy's highest honor. Director James Cameron's message of rich equals shallow and bored, poor equals fulfilled and happy just seems more and more simplistic and, quite frankly, sappy as I grow more accustomed to the film's tremendous special effects. 1999's "American Beauty", about the last year of life of a man in a dysfunctional family seemed OK when I first saw it, but you really have to have seen Alan Ball's series "Six Feet Under" to really get it. Ball writes the best dysfunctional characters since David Lynch. I thought "Gladiator" (2000) was indeed a great picture, and although Russell Crowe's Maximus comes to life to the point where some people actually believe he is a historical figure from the Roman Empire, I still think Tom Hanks was unfairly passed over for Best Actor in his tremendous performance in "Castaway".

These films don't really have any one theme in common, other than being a collection of seven of the better modern films to win the Academy's highest honors that also achieved blockbuster status. It really is a good value and I highly recommend it. All films included are the widescreen editions, but there are no extras worth mentioning except for the two-disc edition of Forrest Gump.
