With Red Rock West and The Last Seduction, writer-director John Dahl established himself as America's leading maker of tough, twisted, funny little neo-noir pictures. Red Rock West is a spare, tight reworking of noirish motifs--the lone man caught in a web of circumstance and betrayal, the rich femme fatale, the corrupt policeman, the wounded military veteran, the homicidal psychopath--that brings to mind classics from Detour to Out of the Past to Bad Day at Black Rock. Cage--warming up for his career-peak (so far) performance in Leaving Las Vegas a few years later--plays an unemployed former Marine (his leg injured in the truck-bombing of the base in Beirut) who stumbles into a nightmarish situation when he stops at a bar in the isolated Wyoming town of Red Rock West. With one fateful step, he's trapped; and no matter how hard he tries, he just can't seem to leave town. The late J.T. Walsh is (as always) splendidly corrupt as the bar owner who harbors some deadly secrets, and Dennis Hopper does a variation on his patented Blue Velvet/River's Edge psycho that suits the treacherous environs of Red Rock West just fine. --Jim Emerson

Elvis, That's the Way It Is.......2007-07-03
Peter Watkins's fascinating biopic about a troubled, nontraditional figure is itself iconoclastic, as it approaches telling Munch's life story through a mosaic of re-enactments, personal diary readings, and faux documentary footage, often repeated for effect. Distant from his father, Munch finds sustenance in a short-lived affair with Mrs. Heiberg (Fraas), a married woman from whom he draws inspiration. Using a variety of sound and color elements to convey Munch's state of mind, Watkins's engrossing film mirrors the inner turmoil of its talented subject.
ELVIS AT HIS BEST ON STAGE IN LAS VEGAS!.......2007-06-17
This is the best footage of Elvis on stage in Las Vegas. The original release included a lot of fan interview footage which was kind of boring, but it also included added footage of Elvis singing songs which were eliminated in the 2001 "Special Edition" version. Both versions are included in this set, so if you don't have both and want them, this is the set for you.

Elvis hadn't dyed his hair a permanent midnight black yet in Follow That Dream, which is another way of saying this is still the point in his career when he was making movies, not just Elvis Presley vehicles. Elvis road-trips with his crabby, anti-government pop (Arthur O'Connell) and an adopted brood to a Florida beach, which by a legal quirk they can homestead. The authorities and some fairly unbelievable gangsters would like to stop them. The songs are undistinguished but not awful, the scenery is nice, and Elvis--looking well-fed and relaxed--shows off good comedic chops doing a dumb-guy shtick. Screenwriter Charles Lederer and director Gordon Douglas are a class act by Presley picture standards, keeping the sitcom-style plot moving along. No fancy clothes or cars in this one, just Elvis and some beachcombing and an old git-tar, and not a bad time-killer for all that. --Robert Horton
Description
Elvis Presley is at his dreamboat peak in this musical comedy that finds the sexy star crooning five original songs in an "amusing and fast-paced" (Variety) romp boasting a "delightful mixtureof songs, romance, humor and good old homespun warmth" (Citizen-News)! When his scheming pop decides to "homestead" the family on a public beach, Toby Kwimper (Presley) digs the exotic settingbut hates the attention he is suddenly receiving. Though he just wants to play his guitar, Toby finds himself up to his baby blues in trouble with government bureaucrats, crime bosses and even two smitten "kittens"an adopted little sister who feels more than sisterly love for him and a social worker with more than his welfare on her mind!

Elvis' best movie.......2007-06-27
I believe this is the best movie that Elvis ever made.
Has a few good laughs in it, and Elvis sings one of my favorite
Elvis songs "Follow that Dream". If you like Elvis, watch this
movie.
Happiness is -To Follow that Dream.......2007-03-29
The story of a squatter family is a rollicking success. Arthur O'Connell as the pappy is hilarious. The dialogue is cleaver and Elvis plays the roll of an innocent, not very well educated young beefcake to perfection. The laughter starts as the movie begins to roll and continues throughout. There are not many songs in the movie by Elvis does sing the beautiful "Angel" to a starry eyed Anne Helm. I found that the 97 minutes flew by and the movie had a "feel good" effect on me. The true sign of good entertainment.
Follow That Dream.......2007-01-18
This is a delightful musical comedy depicting that truth and honesty is a virtue that can win out over greed and corruption. A great film for the whole famiily which will leave you humming its beautiful music
A great family film........2006-11-12
Based on the book Pioneer Go Home, Follow That Dream is an innocent romp through the wilds of mid-century Florida. Ride along with the Kwimper family as they confound everyone from the politicos to the mob on their way to the American dream. A suitable gift for Mom's birthday.
A whole new light on time tables 1+1 equals 2, 2 +2 equals 4, and so on!!.......2006-03-21
I really enjoyed this movie. I personally rank it third after my all time favourite Blue Hawaii coming in at number one, and G.I. Blues at number two.
I love the story line, it's refreshing to watch, and is one the whole family can enjoy together.
If you don't have a copy already in your collection, you should buy one, as you won't be disappointed.

Two indisputable Elvis classics bolster this six-pack of Kingly films, with special emphasis on Elvis as race-car driver (three pictures feature this fave filmic occupation). Everybody loves Jailhouse Rock, the third movie in the Presley filmography. It's a kicky tale about a jailbird who learns to be a rock & roll singer in prison (a plot not at all crazy by later Elvis standards). The film catches Elvis in the freshness of being the New Thing, and his rave-up to the title tune is an exultant announcement that rock and roll just bashed down the front door of popular culture.
It Happened at the World's Fair jumps ahead five years, the Elvis formula set. Location shooting at the futuristic Seattle World's Fair of 1962 lends a quirky backdrop, and check out the young Kurt Russell (future inhabitor of the Elvis persona) kicking the King in the shins. Viva Las Vegas is the other consensus classic: EP plays a race-car driver waiting tables in Sin City, sparking big time with Ann-Margret. The two stars generate some heat, and the theme song has inspired many a road trip. No such trip will be inspired by Harum Scarum, a mad comedy set in the Middle East. Elvis is kidnapped while touring, and a lame spoof of Rudolph Valentino movies ensues.
It's back to the race track for the remaining pair. Spinout places the King in the direct path of three marriage-minded women, but he prefers his car and his guitar. Dumb plot, but the songs at least are agreeably rocking. Speedway has a slimmed-down Elvis and a groovy nightclub hangout, plus the ineffable Nancy Sinatra--there's some terrific kitsch value in this one. --Robert Horton

It Happened at the World's Fair is my favorite movie starring Elvis Presley. It took me a long time to collect this particular movie. The other movies in this collection are very good.
JAILHOUSE ROCK? A 5.... the rest.....??? silencio.......2006-02-08
With King Creole, Love Me Tender and Stay Away Joe - JAILHOUSE ROCK 1957 is Elvis Presley at his best. He declined the old musical tradition of MGM and insisted on a contemparary look - especially how the choreography should be executed.
In this film we see ELVIS PRESLEY at his very best. He was a stunning actor - much more prefer HIM to James Dean... It`s a shame he made more or less 33 forgettable films.... only a handful stands out and JAILHOUSE ROCK is the best. It isn`t a classic - it isn`t even great. But we have ELVIS - the KING - and that`s the best there is:-)))

Customer Reviews:
Modern noir.......2007-05-15
A penniless drifter (Nicholas Cage) becomes trapped in the machinations of greedy, ruthless people when he is mistaken for "Lyle from Texas," a hired killer. He thinks he can take the advance money for a murder, warn the victim (Lara Flynn Boyle), and run, but obviously it doesn't work out as smoothly as that. Director John Dahl co-wrote the screenplay with his brother Rick Dahl, and the two men clearly have a great love for and deep understanding of the genre of film noir. This clever, involving film about people who are in over their heads depends a bit too much on coincidence at a few crucial junctures, but it remains a very entertaining film. Dennis Hopper plays a more restrained version of the psycho he patented in "Blue Velvet," and the great character actor J.T. Walsh delivers a memorable performance.
A very solid thriller!.......2007-02-16
An unemployed cop is hired in order to check if his woman is adulterous. Here and there, turns, double cross and twists will blend themselves to give us a very amusing movie that has as main highlight Denis Hopper in a role that reminds us to Blue velvet.
The final conclusion is extremely mordacious but equally effective.
"I hate to see an innocent woman get hurt, but it's an awful lot of money.".......2006-10-05
I was surprised at just how well elements of classic film noir worked when combined with those of a contemporary western in the surprising little thriller "Red Rock West," written and directed by John Dahl.
Mike Williams (Nicolas Cage) is a likeable, down on his luck, Gulf War vet looking for work as a roughneck on an oilfield in Big Sky Country. When he doesn't get the job, Mike finds himself down to his last few dollars, with no prospects on the horizon. That all changes when he goes into a bar--looking for work--in the little town of Red Rock, Wyoming.
Desperate for any kind of employment, Mike takes advantage of a case of mistaken identity when the bar owner, Wayne (the late great J.T. Walsh), asks him if he is there "for the job." Expecting a job as bartender, Mike is horrified to find he has been hired as a assassin to kill Wayne's wife, Suzanne (Lara Flynn Boyle). Mike decides to keep Wayne's money but has no intention of honoring the contract.
Stopping on his way out of town to warn Suzanne of her husband's plan, Mike finds her willing to double the contract price if he agrees to kill Wayne. Figuring that he has landed in a nest of vipers, Mike writes a letter to the sheriff and plans to 'get the hell out of Dodge' when fate intervenes yet again in the form of a traffic accident. The basically decent Mike takes the man who stumbled in front of his car to the Emergency Room only to find that the man was not only hit by his car but was shot as well. A world of trouble opens up for Mike when the real contract killer, Lyle (Dennis Hopper), finally shows up. What follows are a series of abortive attempts by Mike to leave town--only to be thwarted by chance and circumstance.
"Red Rock West" has a hard luck hero, a beautiful and bad-to-the-bone femme fatale, and enough treachery, betrayal, layered suspense, plot twists and duplicitous characters to satisfy any hardcore classic noir film fan. The eerie deep shadows of classic noir have been replaced by panoramic views of Wyoming's barren sagebrush wastelands. The soundtrack is supplied by such country greats as Johnny Cash, Dwight Yoakam (who also has a small cameo role) and Shania Twain.
This is a 'no frills' DVD without a single extra. It didn't really matter to me though as the movie itself was so outstanding and the transfer was quite good. Along with such modern day classics as "Blood Simple" and "Kill Me Again," "Red Rock West" is one of the best examples of the neo-noir crime film.
A movie movie..........2006-07-21
Do yourself a favour and try this one. It was a nice surprise to me. It's my understanding that this was originally a movie done for HBO or one of the other cable giants, but it has the feel of a movie I would have seen years ago at an art-house theater.
Nicholas Cage - and I'm not much of a fan - drives his landliner of a Caddy out to an oil rig in the remote American West on the promise of a job by a buddy already working there. The rig boss turns him down upon learning of Cage's character's bum leg, the result of a military injury. Left high and dry, Cage's character, Michael, cruises into Red Rock on fumes, willing to do almost anything for work. He inadvertently accepts a job, the nature of which is vague, and is horrified to discover that he is expected to bump off a cheating wife.
It's important to note here that Red Rock, a blip on the map, is essentially run by the sheriff of the town, in true Old West fashion. Saying too much here would ruin some of the excellent twists, but suffice it to say that Michael becomes the unwitting lynchpin that ties together all the nasty elements - a basically good guy caught between a bunch of slimeballs.
There are a number of neat bits - Michael drives in and out of town past the city-limits sign so many times I kept looking for the population notation on the sign to change - and some priceless roles. Dennis Hopper saved "Waterworld" from a totally watery grave; if this movie was bad, he would have done the same thing, but he just adds to this one, at his maniac best and clearly enjoying every minute. Lara Flynn Boyle, as the femme fatale, ceased having much effect on my regard after Twin Peaks; she does OK here, but I did question Michael's continued involvement with her when she is such obvious bad news. J.T. Walsh plays pretty much his regular bad-guy role. The real treat for me is quite minor - a cameo by Dwight Yoakam that makes me smile every time I see it. (He also sings the theme at the end.) One scene at a bar, where Michael is trying to escape from a hit man, has me on the edge even though I know what's going to happen.
For a movie that nobody seems to have heard of, it has a lot going on. And at the end, everybody has gotten just what they deserve. It is certainly worth a couple hours of any movie maven's day.
Doesn't mean I'm going to be come a Nicolas Cage fan overnight.......2006-05-17
Because frankly I do not understand this guy, and his eyes are creepy! This guy is such a major fan of Elvis, he married his daughter ... and then divorced her. Also, Lara Flynn Boyle really needs to put on some weight. Not in this film, as much, though, but yes, she does. I hope I look better than that in a bikini.
Dennis Hopper is the best thing about this film, the guy is such a scene stealer! Even in the only other film I have seen him in (Speed), he steals every scene he's in that too.
The film was full of twists & turns, which I didn't actually expect from reading the blurb on the back. It was slightly hard to keep track of occasionally, but it all came together in the end, although it bugged me that Nicolas's character was so honest!
Most of the characters were pretty stereotypical, maybe that was just me, but I suppose they're pretty much playing standard characters, particularly Lara Flynn Boyle. It was just a bogstandard female role, she could have done more with it, given the chance.
I enjoyed the film, although I don't think I would watch it again. And I'm still a bit iffy as to whether I like Nicolas Cage acting or not.

The novelty backdrop of the 1962 Seattle World's Fair lends wonderful space-age scenery to this Elvis vehicle. The King co-stars with a pre-2001 Gary Lockwood as freelance pilots stranded in Seattle, where Elvis spends more time babysitting a little kid than panting after ostensible love interest Joan O'Brien. There's more plot than usual for a Presley picture, which in this case is not a good thing, and the songs are pallid, save "One Broken Heart for Sale." The real kick is the futuristic look of the World's Fair, as personified by Seattle's Space Needle and Monorail (both of which serve as backdrops for EP songs). Just three years out of the Army, Elvis's persona is thoroughly square and tame, ruffled only by the occasional comic double-take. And yes indeed, that is little Kurt Russell, future star of Elvis, kicking the King in the shins in a couple of scenes. --Robert Horton

One of Elvis Presley best film.......2005-11-07
This is definately one of Elvis Presley's best movie. I saw this in the cinema when I was a kid in 1963. Today I am still enjoying it even though I'm 55. Great songs, action and Elvis looking still good after all these years. He's still young and beautiful and still alive on the TV Screen. Long Live The King!
Elvis DVD !.......2005-09-15
My wife being a diehard Elvis fan loves the worlds fare dvd. She will watch it many times. Loved the quick service and price also!
It Happened At The World's Fair.......2005-07-27
Probably one of Elvis Presley's most obscure movies. This movie is very intertaining for the whole family, and it has some great scenes from the 1962 World's Fair. This is one of my favorite Elvis flicks. I had to pay almost $100.00 to get this movie on VHS less than 2 years ago. I am also a Kurt Russell fan, so seeing Kurt in his first small role with Elvis was a real thrill for me. This is truly one classic Elvis Presley movie everyone should see.

Elvis plays a roughneck country boy, seething with hostility but gifted with literary talent. In the occasionally precious Clifford Odets script, this comes across as James Dean by way of a Thomas Wolfe novel--and not a bad shot at respectable acting by Elvis. His monologue about his dead mother, delivered to sympathetic shrink Hope Lange, is one of the most affecting things the King ever did in a movie. The songs are kept to a minimum, and Presley has some good, thrumming energy with the young Tuesday Weld (bad girl) and Millie Perkins (good girl), two uncommonly smart actresses. This is one of many Hollywood melodramas suggesting the angst brewing beneath the prosperity of the Eisenhower-Kennedy era, and it holds up decently, if not spectacularly. For Elvis fans, it's a poignant glimpse at a performer still in the young-buck stage of exciting possibilities. --Robert Horton
Description
Possibly the sexiest of all of The King's movies, this film finds Elvis playing a backwoods delinquent blessed with great literary talents with Millie Perkins as his childhood sweetheart. Co-starring Tuesday Weld.
Customer Reviews:
A singer who can act? Or an actor who can sing? You be the judge!!.......2006-03-21
Although I don't feel that this is one of Elvis' best efforts, there is still something about this movie that draws you to it!
A more serious role, than his usual musical performances, he comes across as still being a little raw, but I still enjoyed it, all the same.
There were fine supporting roles played by Millie Perkins as his girlfriend Betty Lee, Tuesday Weld as his cousin Noreen, and Hope Lange as his psychiatrist.
Tuesday Weld has come a long way since her debut, playing the teenage daughter of Danny Kaye ("Red Nichols") in The Five Pennies, and put in a very good performance.
Millie Perkins also delivered a sound performance. I enjoyed her role as much as I did in the movie The Diary of Anne Frank in which she portrayed "Anne Frank".
Hope Lange is always enjoyable to watch, and that is the case here again in this movie.
Although not ranked as high in my all time favourite Elvis movies, it is still worth the watch, and a good movie to have in your collection.
One of Elvis' Better Movies.......2006-01-02
This is one of the better films that Elvis made after being released from the army in 1960. The quality of the acting and the songs are both very good.
***Check out King Creole(1958) and Jailhouse Rock(1957)***
Wild in the Country.......2005-11-05
I really enjoyed watching this movie. I am a Elvis Presly fan.
Elvis' best SAFE dramatic role........2002-11-09
When I say "safe", I mean where Elvis does not killed in the end like in "Love Me Tender", and "Flaming Star." This something that's much better and I prefer a whole lot. Elvis has not one but three female costars: Hope Lange, Tuesday Weld, and Millie Perkins. I don't know about you but he gives an equal amount of attention to every one of them except near the end when he focuses more on Hope Lange. I love the songs which are: "Wild In The Country", "I Slipped, I Stumbled, I Fell", "In My Way", and "Husky Dusky Day". My favorite line is when Elvis as Glenn Tyler says "This routine of yours could stagger a billygoat." That's one of his best lines. All Elvis fans should see this once in their lifetime. It's a must!
Wild In The Country.......2002-07-31
Wild In The Country would offer Elvis his last serious role in a film by a significant director (Philip Dunne). Elvis portrays Glenn Tyler, a southern boy from a rural, poverty-stricken background, who has just been released from juvenile hall. Central to the character of Glenn is that the brooding young man is at a crossroads in his life, and he must choose the path most suitable for him. His choices are represented by three women. Noreen (Tuesday Weld) is Glenn's cousin who urges him to stay with his own kind. Noreen offers passion and good times, but such a carefree existence allows little thought for the future. Betty Lee (Millie Perkins), who is Glenn's childhood sweetheart selflessly places Glenn's future above her own needs, urging him to leave town and attend college. She is prepared to lose him that he may have an education and a secure future. Hope Lange costars as Irene Sperry, the court-appointed psychiatrist assigned to Glenn's case, who recognizes in him the raw talent of a budding writer. She also encourages Glenn to attend college but causes scandal when she falls in love with him. Glenn ends up following Betty Lee's advice and asking her to wait for him.
With a strong supporting cast including a young Tuesday Weld who was only 17 years old during the film's production. She was one of the hottest and wildest starlets in Hollywood and already had romances with two of of her costars in the film - Elvis and Veteran Actor John Ireland.
Produced for Twentieth Century Fox by Jerry Wald. Released June 22, 1961. Color.

It's pretty tough to beat Jailhouse Rock in terms of sheer entertainment, but Elvis lovers are particularly fond of this 1964 hit. The Big E plays race-car driver Lucky Jackson, who arrives in Las Vegas for an upcoming Grand Prix race. Lucky's car needs a new engine, so he gets a waiter job at a casino and starts working his crooning charms on Rusty Martin (Ann-Margret). It's their on-screen chemistry that makes this flick a lot of fun; Presley never had a better costar than Ann-Margret, and their race-car romance is quintessential 1960s fluff. Then there are the songs, of course, including the snappy title tune, a rockin' rendition of Ray Charles's "What'd I Say?," and "The Yellow Rose of Texas." Viva Las Vegas is one of the Elvis movies that stands the test of time, when the legend was still at his peak. And if you're wondering if the King gets his car fixed in time to win the race, well, check out this digital video disc to find out. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
you have to see this movie.......2007-07-03
Greatest elvis movie I have ever seen. I personally LOVE Ann margret and elvis presley. Their harmony in this movie is INCREDIBLE! It actually makes me sad that they didn't make another movie together cuz they look absolutely fantastic as a couple!! I watched this movie over and over. I admit that the story is.. well there is no big story. But if you're in love with Elvis presley and Ann margret, this is a movie you have to see.
Viva Las Vegas.......2007-05-13
Great movie and cast, disc in in very good condition.
If you like Elvis and Ann-Margret, theis is the movie to see.
EP in the AM.......2007-01-10
Elvis, well is Elvis. He's a lot better actor than he's credited for. You can see the admiration of AM's eyes for EP. Pool musical duo is the highlight of the movie. Entertaining movie, even for today.
Elvis' best film ever...........2006-12-23
Of all the Elvis B-pictures that he made during the 1960's, this was by far his best result.
Just looking at old Las Vegas before the corporations took it over, is a visual treat. Ann Margaret is very complimentary to Elvis as his wannabe love interest. The songs in his films were often poor quality, but not so much in this film.
If you are a new Elvis fan and want to see a high quality Technicolor transfer of a great classic romp....this is my pick for his best movie. The only other one that came close to this was "Fun In Alcupulco" (sp?)
Enjoy...and Viva Las Vegas!!
Presley with Ann-Margret, a dynamite combo!.......2006-06-11
VIVA LAS VEGAS is the quintessential Elvis Presley musical, filled with great songs and not to mention his most formidable female costar, Ann-Margret at the very height of her 'sex kitten' phase.
Just like many of his other movie roles, Presley plays race-car driver Lucky Jackson, who gets stranded in Vegas when his money runs out. He meets beautiful swimming instructor Rusty (Ann-Margret) and the sparks immediately start flying. The director George Sidney had already guided Ann-Margret through her first major starring vehicle "Bye Bye Birdie", and had also helmed many of the great M-G-M musicals. He brought a great touch to VIVA LAS VEGAS which is one of the main reasons why so many people love this movie, even those who aren't too keen on Elvis. The musical numbers (choreographed by veteran Broadway and Hollywood dancer David Winters) are plentiful but the highlights include "Yellow Rose of Texas", "The Lady Loves Me", "Today, Tomorrow and Forever" and the Title Song. Ann-Margret also gets to sizzle with the elaborately-designed and jazzily-choreographed "Appreciation". Also featuring Cesare Danova, William Demarest and Nicky Blair.
