The bleak reality of drug addiction is captured with unflinching authenticity in The Corner, an excellent, reality-based HBO miniseries. Having lived on the streets of West Baltimore, Maryland, where this compelling drama takes place, actor-director Charles S. Dutton knows the territory, physically, socially, and emotionally, and his compassionate approach is vital to the series' success. Dutton cares for his characters deeply enough to give them a realistic shred of hope, even when hope is consistently dashed by the ravages of addiction. This is, at its root, a family tragedy, focusing on errant father Gary (T.K. Carter, in a heartbreaking performance) a once-successful investor trapped in a tailspin of heroin dependency. His estranged wife Fran (Khandi Alexander) was the first to get hooked, and she's struggling to get clean, while their 15-year-old son DeAndre (Sean Nelson, from the indie hit Fresh) deals drugs, temporarily avoiding their deadly allure while facing the challenge of premature fatherhood.

Through revealing flashbacks and numerous local characters, we see the explicit fallout of addiction, and while violence occasionally erupts, its constant threat is secondary to Dutton's dramatic vision, which remains steadfastly alert to the humanity and neglected potential of these lost and searching souls. The Corner is, essentially, the civilian flipside of HBO's equally laudable series The Wire, which approaches a similar neighborhood from a police-squad perspective. Performances are uniformly superb, details are uncannily perfect, and for all of its human horror, The Corner is riveting, not depressing. A closing interview with the characters' real-life counterparts bears witness to the fact that these lives--with inevitable exceptions--need not be lost forever. --Jeff Shannon

One of the most charming and romantic films around, this 1940 comic romance finds James Stewart (Vertigo, It's A Wonderful Life) working in a small shop in Budapest and longing for a girl to call his own. His coworker, Margaret Sullavan, feels the same, and soon they are both corresponding and falling in love with their respective pen pals. What they don't realize is that they are writing to and falling in love with each other, but the problem is that they can't stand each other in person. The beguiling nature of the mistaken identity formula that influenced countless films is done to perfection here, and the wry combativeness and delightful banter between the two leads makes this a very special film. --Robert Lane

5 out of 5 stars The Shop Around the Corner.......2007-06-25

They don't make romantic comedies like they used to, and no one made them quite like director Ernst Lubitsch, whose famed "touch" lights this wry, poignant, perennially charming film. Veteran players Stewart and Sullavan are a perfect match as comically antagonistic lonelyhearts, conveying their characters' vulnerabilities with a delicacy too often missing from the tepid Hanks-Ryan remake, "You've Got Mail". Rich subplots involving the wonderful Frank Morgan and Joseph Schildkraut, who plays a scheming, boastful employee, let Lubitsch impart further nuance to this modest but wholly pleasing tale. A delight from start to finish, this is one "Shop" you'll want to dally in.

5 out of 5 stars Give me a Stamp!!.......2007-06-09

Does anyone write letters in more. What a shame. Oh, if it could be so easy. This was a great film I loved every minute of it. Sullavan and Stewart were so good together. I wasn't sure I would like the Budapest being the backdrop but it turn out that it didn't bother me. Great movie to add to anyones collection. I know that I'm glad that its in mine..

4 out of 5 stars You've got mail, take one.......2007-04-21

In Ernst Lubitch's delightful romantic comedy, James Stewart's and Margaret Sullivan's third film together, Stewart plays Alfred Kralick, the best and most experienced employee of Matuschek & Co, a gift shop in Budapest, Hungary. He is in love with a woman with whom he's been anonymously corresponding, found her his soul mate, admires her intelligence, and sense of humor, and is ready to meet her in flesh (very much like now days people meet, communicate, and fell in love on line before they meet in real life . One morning Klara Novak walks into the store desperately in the need for a job. First, Kralick and Klara don't get along but we understand that they actually attract to each other. Klara also corresponds with a man whom she's never met but felt that he is the right man for her. Would Klara and Alfred meet with their mysterious correspondents or would they ever look closer at each other? Watch this story of love first unrecognized but inevitable directed by the one of the wittiest masters of comedy, Ernst Lubitch.

Excellent movie! One of James Stewart's best ones. It was better then the remake "You've Got Mail."

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully shot, and a fun story, too.......2007-02-20

I first saw this movie on satellite TV with my mom one winter vacation. Recently, I was reminded of it, and remembered how wonderful it is. Besides being an adorable story, the film is shot beautifully in black and white, which the DVD shows off perfectly. I think it's much better than You've Got Mail, although I like that movie, too. Definitely worth at least a rental.

5 out of 5 stars Good Quality Television...........2007-06-27

This is a fascinating and emotional true story of how drugs can destroy not only a family but a community. The character of Gary McCullough is truly a tragic figure. I wish the dvd had extras but the end does have a nice touch with character updates and director Charles Dutton interviewing the real life Deandre, Fran, Blue, and Tyreeka. I definitely recommend this gripping and gritty tv mini-series.

5 out of 5 stars Gritty, hard, sad and Very Well done........2007-06-17

Not an easy watch. Its the center of poverty a Lot of people never see and probably cannot relate to, but I think it instructs, and one gets to understand at least to a degree, why people end up giving up on themselves and ending up on drugs. Its better than being 'wide awake' and living in the poverty and harassment that they have to live with on a daily basis. No hope, no future, constant crime, its frightening and yet its reality. Its also very well done and heartbreaking at times as well as gritty and dark and will leave a lasting mark. Well worth the watch!!

There's a scene right at the end of episode three titled "Fran's Blues", where Charles S. Dutton is talking to Baltimore Police Officer Robert Brown (played by Brian O'Neill). Officer Brown says he's sad about how the neighbourhood has changed over the years due to drugs. "The rot started in the projects," Brown says, and then it "Just kept creeping uphill." Dutton asks Brown if he ever feels like he's wasting his time, given the number of people the city locks up every year only a fraction of who get "prison time". Brown doesn't seem to think so, replying that there are still good people in the neighbourhood, "Church people, working people", who want to see the drug scourge end. Duttom then asks Brown if he thinks the war on drugs will ever be won? There's a long pause. The officer looks everywhere but at the camera and, after what seems like an age, finally says: "No comment."

Fans of "The Wire" (of which this series is a very close relation) will also recall a scene where it's implied by one of the characters that the war on drugs isn't being fought with any conviction because if it was and was eventually won, well, then local politicians wouldn't have anything to campaign about, would they? And then let's not forget the very strong belief among social commentators and observers both black and white, that narcotic drugs were brought into the black community by the CIA to ensure black folk remained a permanent underclass. Why do I bring all this up? I bring it all this up because these are the issues that came up for me while watching this powerful series. More than anything else, I came away feeling amazed that we live in a society that has allowed such incredible suffering to go on, on such a massive scale, for so long.

The six-part series is very cleverly directed by Charles S. Dutton to look like it was part documentary and part drama with skilfully added in flashbacks. In just six one-hour episodes it explores a wide range of social issues such as urban deprivation, poverty, family breakdown and teenage pregnancy but the focus is really the psychology of drug addiction and the despair of people caught up in it, particularly the McCullough family: Dad Gary (played by T.K. Carter), Mom Fran (played by Khandi Alexander) and two sons DeAndre and DeRodd (played by Sean Nelson and Sylvester Lee Kirk respectively). The series poses a lot of interesting and crucial questions about the so-called war on drugs that so far, I haven't heard any real-life politicians seriously address. Ever.

The series is from the same brains behind similarly Baltimore-focused shows as "Homicide: Life on the Street" and of course "The Wire". I know a couple of Baltimore residents personally and while all fans of these shows, they do have mixed feelings about them. I can understand why. Other shows supposedly based in other cities like New York's "Law & Order", Los Angeles' "The Shield" or Las Vegas' "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" are all very well produced, directed and acted, (not to mention popular world-wide), but they are also very obviously works of fiction. This crop of shows on the other hand are based on non-fiction books. "The Corner" is based on "The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood", a non-fiction book by David Simon and Edward Burns and "The Wire", though largely written by Simon and Burns, is based on the non-fiction book "The Wire: Truth Be Told" by Rafael Alvarez. Even "Homicide" was based on a non-fiction book. They are thus so very close to the truth of what life is like on the streets of Baltimore. Or so I'm told. I can understand how that could make some people uncomfortable. Almost like they and their city are being put under a microscope.

In any event, one question that never seems to get answered via any of these shows and always seems to get glossed over is why these people get into drugs in the first place. We're told that Fran lost her sister and turned to drugs to ease the pain but no more is said on the subject. Personally, I'd have liked to find out what it was about Fran or any of the other drug addicts in the series and/or what it was about their lives that made drugs so attractive an option as an escape?

Also, these drugs are not manufactured on the streets of Baltimore so how do they get there? And where do they come from? I feel until we get shows that begin to focus on some of the root causes of the world's drug epidemic today, all we'll ever get is very entertaining shows that mainly serve to make us voyeurs on other people's tragic sadness.

But the emphasis is definitely on 'very entertaining'. I watched the entire series over two days, three episodes a sitting and then watched them all over again. As sad as the stories are, they were fun to watch. It was so much fun to see many of the same actors from the current season of The Wire on this too, people like Lance Reddick, Maria Broom, Clarke Peters, Reg E. Cathey; all incredibly versatile and talented artistes. Finally, it was also great to see (at the end of the final episode) the real-life people behind the story and find out how they felt about being portrayed on film in this way. They didn't seem to mind and the real Fran Boyd expressed the hope that seeing how bad her life on drugs was, might encourage other drug addicts to get help.

I hope so too.

I know this is long-winded and may seem more like an essay than a review of a DVD but I just don't think it's enough to review something this significant with generic praise like "Great work by Charles S. Dutton!" (Even though it is) or "T.K. Carter's performance was stunning!" (Even though it was) or "Sean Nelson was great!" (Even though he was) or "Khandi Alexander shines!" (Even though she does). In my view, this winner of 3 Emmys is a body of work that is much greater than the sum of its parts, as fantastic as those parts are. This series makes me think and it makes me wonder. Not many TV series can do that.

But then, this isn't TV. It's HBO.

4 out of 5 stars A good-quality set..........2006-09-09

... to add to your collection of Shirley Temple movies. While these aren't some of her best, they are still entertaining.

"Captain January" is probably the most fun of the bunch. I like most of the movies Shirley made between 1934 and 1936, and this one falls neatly in amongst them. "At the Codfish Ball", a great song-and-dance number with Buddy Ebsen, is included.

By the time "Just Around the Corner" came out, Shirley was getting a little old, and the mannerisms that might have passed for cuteness as a child were beginning to get a little annoying. The movie is still worth seeing though, if only for her dance routines with Bill Robinson.

When watching "Susannah of the Mounties", keep in mind that it was a story about a different time (the 1880s) that was made in a different time (the 1930s). It will probably come across as somewhat racist to today's viewers, but it will still probably appeal to Shirley fans.

The problems with sound that I noticed on some of the discs in the last two collections seem to have been corrected. The audio was fine, and the colourizations were decent. People thinking of purchasing this collection might want to be aware that, unlike the three previous collections, there was no charm bracelet included with this one (I don't mind... I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the three I now have!).

All in all, it's a fine set for the collection. I hope there will be a Volume 5... I'm still waiting for "Stowaway" and "Poor Little Rich Girl" (two of my other 1936 favourites).

The Dark Corner can't seriously be proposed as a great film noir, but it's one that people cherish. For one thing, it's unique in having Lucille Ball--who has absolutely no "splainin'" to do--as the smart, resourceful, devoted secretary of beleaguered private eye Mark Stevens. Lucy actually rates top billing, with Clifton up-to-his-old-Laura-tricks Webb and William vicious-brute-in-a-white-suit Bendix also getting their names above that of the hero in the credits. In this, there's a certain justice; they all deliver the goods, whereas Stevens seems a tad lightweight as the hardnose, Phil Marlowe type cracking wise and punching his way through the mean streets. His character comes burdened with more backstory than usual for movie detectives; this time, the case the private eye has to solve is his own. The intriguingly convoluted screenplay (by Jay Dratler, who co-wrote Laura, and Bernard Schoenfeld, from a story by Leo Rosten) takes hold like a vise and sustains the tension even though, by rights, its credibility should be shrinking with each passing reel. Henry Hathaway's direction is crisp, and the cinematography by Joe MacDonald (who would next shoot John Ford's My Darling Clementine) is both pungent and gorgeous. With Cathy Downs, Kurt Kreuger, and Reed Hadley, who plays a police detective here but more often supplied the voiceover on Fox's semidocumentary thrillers and Anthony Mann's T-Men. --Richard T. Jameson

Description

Lucille Ball has a change of pace role as the loyal secretary of a private eye in this brooding film noir about a man being set up for a murder rap. Framed by his partner years ago, hard-boiled detective Bradford Galt (Mark Stevens) served a two year stretch for manslaughter. Now trying to start over, he spends his time serving his clients and romancing his new secretary, Kathleen (Lucille Ball). But everything changes with the appearance of a sinister man in a whit suit (William Bendix) who's apparently working for Galt's ex-partner, Tony Jardine. When Jardine is killed, the police blame Galt. It's another frame, but if Galt can't prove he's innocent, this time he's headed for death row.

A private dick in deep trouble, a beautiful secretary, Clifton Webb is
playing his role to the hilt and there seems to be no way out for our de-

This movie has everthing you need for a thrilling nights entertainment
in the "Dark City". It's a well acted and perfectly paced story seasoned with action and some surprisingly stark violence.
The DVD is crisp and clear, excellent video and sound quality. I liked
the commentary that comes on the dvd and find this to be a movie every noir fan should own.

5 out of 5 stars The Dark Corner - Fox Film Noir.......2007-07-03

Though we tend to associate Film Noir with Warner Brothers pictures, many of the excellent examples of the genre were made by Twentieth Century Fox. "The Dark Corner" is one of these. The titles give top billing to Lucille Ball, Clifton Webb, and William Bendix - but the star of the film is Mark Stevens, an underrated actor who could play hard-bitten parts as well as anyone. The camera follows him around as the plot of the movie unfolds. Clifton Webb does his usual excellent job in a part reminiscent of his role in "Laura."
William Bendix, known for both his comedic roles as well as his tough guy parts, throws his weight around and gets thrown around in this one, and Lucille Ball, who gets the undeserved star billing, is quite good in a straight part. She shows none of the "Lucy" zany qualities that she became famous for in later years.
In my opinion, Mark Stevens should have had a bigger career. I wonder what happened!

3 out of 5 stars Unusual Lucy.......2007-05-28

This is Lucy in a dramatic role. It showcases her talent very well. Male lead would have been better played by Dana Andrews but otherwise good Film Noir.

3 out of 5 stars So-so story........2007-05-09

Don't get me wrong, I love noir whether it's books or film. I think Lucille Ball was terrific in this film. In fact, she's so much better than the story and the awful acting of Mark Stevens, that I'd say she was wasted. The story is weak, there are no real surprises except one: Director Hathaway somehow managed not to create any tension at all. No tension, no sexual chemistry between the leads, and Kreuger was a vanilla villain -- I couldn't work up any feelings about him one way or the other. Not only that but the pacing is truly sluggish. Clifton Webb could have phoned in his performance, it's pretty much the same one he did in 'Laura,' except for that nifty bit of murder he performed on William Bendix, which was done in Webb's inimitably urbane style. It's a watchable movie, but if you have to take a phone call in the middle of it you're not going to miss any great moments.

4 out of 5 stars The light and the dark.......2007-03-20

This is one of those movies in which, among the principals, no two acting styles are alike. It shouldn't work, you think, but somehow it does. It's a satisfying little mid-forties Fox noir, well directed by Henry Hathaway.

Mark Stevens is private eye Bradford Galt. He has a small office with one secretary, Kathleen, played by Lucille Ball. During the prelude to their developing romance, they find that they're being shadowed by "the man in the white suit," played by William Bendix. Except that Bendix ("Fred Foss") doesn't stay in the shadows and he's wearing a fershlugginer WHITE SUIT--I mean, even the secretary spots the tail right off. After luring Foss into his office, Galt conducts a roughhouse interview; Foss spills the name "Jardine" as the baddie who hired him. Not the Beach Boy, it turns out, but Galt's former partner, who had tried to kill him several years earlier but only succeeded in framing him and getting him sent to the slammer. Galt, free again, thinks Jardine may have plans to finish the job. . . .

William Bendix is, as usual, terrific. He's a palpably slimy presence, but his acting is never over the top; his pug mug and his soft, sandy voice are far more menacing than his actual dialogue. Like most baby boomers, I first knew Bendix as Chester A. Riley on TV. Later on, watching him play sadistic hoods (first in THE GLASS KEY), I had no trouble accepting the transformation. For some reason, I couldn't make the switch with Lucille Ball. She is and always will be Lucy McGillicuddy Ricardo. As Kathleen in THE DARK CORNER, she seems to be marking time. In her defense, the role is relatively colorless: she gives Mark Stevens someone to talk to, kiss, send on errands, and so on, but her character isn't as essential--or as provocative--as that of Cathy Downs, the other beautiful woman in the movie.

Mark Stevens overacts, yet seems right for the part. Kurt Kreuger, Clifton Webb, and Constance Collier are all excellent. Bit parts and walkons reveal other familiar faces: Reed Hadley, playing a smooth detective whose fedora remains firmly clamped down to his eyebrows; Ellen Corby, who gets to scream; John Russell, whom I remember mainly from TV's "Soldiers of Fortune"; and, in a performance sequence, Eddie Heywood, the fine jazz pianist and bandleader.

The real star, however, is Joe MacDonald, the cinematographer. The source print used in the Fox Film Noir DVD is less sharp than I'd anticipated, but the lighting throughout the film is stunning nevertheless. It does far more than the talky script to establish the mood of each scene, and it makes me want to revisit MacDonald's other noirs-- THE STREET WITH NO NAME (1948), CALL NORTHSIDE 777 (1948), and PANIC IN THE STREETS (1950). He also did Ford's MY DARLING CLEMENTINE (1946), the lovely little Ray Milland comedy, IT HAPPENS EVERY SPRING (1949), and many color films from the fifties onward (including HOUSE OF BAMBOO in 1955).

Using a faulty thriller for his soapbox as an outspoken critic of China, a devout follower of the Dalai Lama, and an influential supporter of Tibetan freedom, Richard Gere resorts to the equivalent of propagandistic drama to deliver a heavy-handed message. In other words, Red Corner relies on a dubious strategy to promote political awareness, but director Jon Avnet appeals to the viewer's outrage with such effective urgency that you're likely to forget you're being shamelessly manipulated. Gere plays a downtrodden TV executive who sells syndicated shows on the global market, and during a business trip to China he finds himself framed for the murder of the sexy daughter of a high Chinese official. Once trapped in a legal system in which his innocence will be all but impossible to prove, Gere must rely on a Chinese-appointed lawyer (played by Bai Ling) who first advises him to plead guilty but gradually grows convinced of foul play. Barely attempting to hide its agenda, Red Corner effectively sets the stage for abundant anti-Chinese sentiment, and to be sure, the movie gains powerful momentum with its tale of justice gone awry. It's a serious-minded, high-intensity courtroom drama with noble intentions ... but did it have to be so conspicuously lacking in subtlety? --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Red Corner with Richard Gere.......2007-02-15

Richard Gere plays Jack Moore, who works For McAndrews telecommunications a company that is about to make a billion dollar deal with Hoffco communications in China.

This detail is very important as you will see later on. Moore is seeing Hong Li, daughter of a strong military General named Hong.. Moore and Hong Li are having a good evening when Hong Li Receives a phone call from someone who apparently doesn't want to leave her alone. (I hate it when that happens.)

She says something in Chinese , "Mishu" I think and she tells Moore that it's nothing. Everything seems fine until Moore awakes the next day. He is awakened by Chinese policeman who are arresting him for some reason. Moore looks over and sees his girlfriend Hong Li covered in blood.

It seems that Moore (Gere) has been framed for the murder of his girlfriend . An anonymous call has been placed saying screams were heard. Photos of him with blood on his shirt were placed as proof putting him in the murder scene.

Moore goes into trial where he is defended by Shen Yueli, a Chinese lawyer (played excellently by Ling Bai.) At first Moore's trial goes against him and he stays in prison for the time being. Gere probably does probably his best acting, next to "Primal Fear", which was made in 1996. Gere and his Chinese lawyer do their best to find out who the real killer is before Time runs out. The film is actually quite good, though it has writing flaws that become evident. For instance as Gere's Lawyer tries to find out the phone records for Hong Li, she finds out that the records have been deleted , but then in another scene a friend of hers has gotten a hold of it because security wasn't there to stop him.

This only last for a minute though as Yueli and her friend are attacked by a masked villain who steals the records from her. The villain is later found to be Huang Mi Lu, a military soldier.. The most intriguing aspects of the film are the court room dramas where we see how Moore and Yuelin try to unravel this conspiracy of government traitors that has used him for their own purposes. Moore goes back to court and knowing that Mr. Huang Mi Lu is behind this scheme to set up him up questions him.

The movie is brilliantly directed by Jon Avnet who not only gives a very entertaining film that provides a first hand look into a communist country like China where human rights ,poverty and famine are still an issue, except for the fat cats of the country. It's a good little political thriller with a couple of twists that make it interesting. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Red Corner..........2007-02-03

Whatever you do, don't mess up in the People's Republic of China. That's the message I received from this film. Richard Gere and Bai Ling do an excellent job in this film. It's a wonder that the film didn't do any better than it did.

This was a good murder/suspense film. Richard Gere's character did really have everything on the line - with the U.S. Government helpless to help him. See for yourself...Four stars...

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MOVIE.......2006-11-10

This movie is a very well acted movie. Everyone should see it. Richard Gere and Bai Ling are perfect in this movie. This movie gives you an insight to the Chinese Legal system.

4 out of 5 stars "Why Is The Bamboo Here" ~ Murder, Mystery And Romance Behind The Bamboo Curtain.......2006-10-24

`Red Corner' released in '97 is a surprisingly taunt, entertaining and subdued romantic murder mystery.

Synopsis: Jack Moore (Richard Gere) is an American businessman entrapped within the Chinese Communist legal system. He awakens from a romantic one night stand to find himself accused of the grisly murder of a beautiful Chinese woman. A woman who also happens to be the daughter of a powerful Communist official, Jack pleas of innocence fall on deaf ears until he convinces his attorney Shen Yuelin (Ling Bai) that he is being framed. Can one lone female voice halt the powerful forces that seek the death of the American?

Richard Gere delivers a strong performance, but Ling Bai is the real star as the demure, yet strong willed and beautiful attorney. `Red Corner' is a little strong handed in its depiction of justice behind the Bamboo Curtain, but the story and romance make it well worth the time.

1 out of 5 stars Gere needs to find a more constructive raison d'etre .......2006-10-11

The commercial was enough to raise my blood pressure and turn my stomach. I spent a year teaching English in Mainland China. Unfortunately, I didn't visit Tibet and I don't want to seem unsympathetic to their plight. It's just that America and Hollywood, which is often a symptom of America, need to get off this self-righteous kick of trying to enlighten the rest of the world and tell everyone else how they should live.

Contrast this with the plot in Red Corner: When an American "teacher" in my group got his 14 year-old student pregnant he was quietly sent home and she got kicked out of school for a year. If a visiting Chinese teacher got an American 14 year-old pregnant he probably would have gone to prison.

I want encourage those who would consider jumping on Gere's bandwagon how they might react in the actual event of the following hypothetical scenarios. ALL I HAVE DONE IS REVERSE THE NATIONALITIES.

1. Gere's Chinese counterpart, aging heartthrob Chow Yun Fat befriends descendents of Hawaii's deposed royal family and goes on a righteous crusade to re-instate them as monarchy and give Hawaii back to the native people.

2. Jet Li writes, produces, and stars in Yankee Justice. Li plays a Chinese US citizen wrongly accused of spying. Under the Patriot Act Li is whisked away to a secret location in Eastern Europe, without due process, for an indefinite period. Li is manacled, shackled and smacked around repeatedly while being interrogated. He manages to get just free enough to launch a surprise attack and kick some serious Homeland Securities. He makes a dramatic escape into the night and hops on the Orient Express. He disembarks in Beijing where kisses the ground and begs for repatriation. He is hailed as a hero and a martyr.

3. A paramilitary group launches a coup d'etat against Jeb Bush, attempts to seal off the Florida peninsula, and secede from the US. Even though America's military is busy fighting over something in Iraq it's nothing we can't handle. But wait! Mainland China remembering America's generous support for the Guomindang (Kuomintang) when they fled to Taiwan decides to send soldiers to support Florida's independence. Since their population is about five times that of the US, and increasingly male, they can spare a few troops. A bit of historical trivia; before China "acquired" Taiwan it was inhabited by 16 tribes of indigenous people whom they decimated. Sound a little like American history?

I hope to eventually to return to China to visit friends. For the record I am much more concerned about being a victim of random violence in the US than being framed by the PLA (The People's Liberation Army). By the way one of my Chinese students, here in the US, was the victim of a random murder last year. I know it's not exotic, glamorous, or sexy, but Americans should be more concerned about random violence, corporate corruption, social security, and universal healthcare. These issues will affect just about every American in some way at some point.

5 out of 5 stars Film Noir Boxed Set.......2007-03-28

I have watched about half of these movies & so far all of them have been very good, in fact, much better than I expected. I find Dana Andrews to be a very compelling leading man & the actresses in all of these are superb as well. I hope Fox will resolve their issues with "Boomerang" which is #16 in the set, (which is not included with your purchase) so that I can add this one to the collection. My only complaint is that this collection is not really a boxed set. It is simply 17 great film noir DVD's shrink-wrapped together. However, this is a great value & lots of these titles are being released for the first time in this set. Highly recommended for those who like the genre.

4 out of 5 stars remember...no 16 Boomerang is still missing.......2007-03-18

This set misses out no.16 "Boomerang". It got recalled at the eleventh hour by Fox because of a legal tangle.
You can find it on sale for $45.00 on amazon marketplace, because it was actually printed and ready to go.
Clearly a few boxes have found their way out the back door!!!!
But despite that wee dissapointment you'll love the rest.
Hopefully Fox will sort out the mess soon..... and then you can plug the gap without having to shell out silly money.

3 out of 5 stars better price (than list) to start your collection, but not the best deal on noir.......2007-03-12

I haven't yet purchased these titles & was just about to, until I checked up on what's included with the current bundle (March 1 2007) that Amazon is offering. As previously mentioned, this is not a box set (misleading description from Amazon), but rather a bundle of the first 17 titles in Fox's noir series. I purchased the Warner Bros.' boxes 1-3 (and reviewed them there) which I thought were an excellent value for the money (when on sale, roughly 6 - 7$ per disc). I've held off on these since the price is higher. This bundle discounts the titles to about $8 per disc, which is better than the usual price for each, but a local retailer often sells these titles for 7.50 - 10.00 (with a buy 3 get 1 free sale). Still I would have jumped on this price had this been a bonafide box set with the slimmer DVD cases, but these regular dvd's will take up quite a bit of real estate in my storage. Moreover, the more recent titles aren't included (missing titles: Boomerang, 14 Hours, Shock, Vicki, all released last year). If Fox would release all the titles to date (plus the next releases: Hangover Square & The Lodger) in slim cases & a box at a comparable price I'll jump, otherwise I'm holding out for a better deal.

3 out of 5 stars Don't Forget This One Too................2006-03-05

For some reason the Fox Noir release Dark Corner (Mark Stevens, Lucille Ball, Clifton Webb, William Bendix) doesn't get much coverage under the typical outlets for obtaining these Fox Noir titles, Amazon included. I didn't even know the title was even out there, but it is, and it is quite a Noir gem. I say this without hesitation because I was never a Lucy fan at all. But in this one, she's actually pretty cool. Too bad she went goofy in later life (I guess it paid the bills).
If you like the Fox Noir series and Noir in general, don't forget this one too. I got mine from Tower Records (seems hard to find for some reason). The famous "peering through the venetian blinds" scene that you see stills of all the time, that's Mark Stevens. A somewhat overlooked actor in Noir circuit, but he can hold up to any of the other more noted ones in my opinion. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars An indispensable series for aficionados of film noir.......2006-01-10

The Fox film noir collection is an "Amazon.com exclusive" consisting of 9 DVDS in their individual cases (alas including individual shrink wrap, which one tediously has to remove) presented in one blister pack. The nine titles are:
*** BATCH 1 (DVDs released 3/05): Call Northside 777 (1948); Laura (1944); Panic in the streets (1950)
*** BATCH 2 (DVDs released 6/05): House of bamboo (1955); Nightmare alley (1947); Street with no name (1948)
*** BATCH 3 (DVDs released 9/05): House on 92nd Street (1945); Somewhere in the night (1946); Whirlpool (1949)

The film restorations are superbly done. The DVD cases are in uniform format, being part of the "Fox film noir" series. Each title has a film commentary (Laura has two) plus other extras, minimally a trailer. In addition, each title has a 4-page booklet with these sections: "the lineup," "the look," "the scoop," "the story," and "scene selection."

The DVDs list for $14.95 each and currently Amazon sells them for around $10 each. Amazon sells the 9-DVD collection for $74.99, which works out to $8.33 for each DVD. Certainly, not all titles are of the caliber of Laura (1944), but this collection is a must-have for the firm-noir aficionado.

Incidentally, BATCH 4, was released 12/05 and consists of: The dark corner (1946); Kiss of death (1947); Where the sidewalk ends (1950). BATCH 5 will be released in 3/06: Fallen angel (1945); House on Telegraph Hill (1951); No way out (1950)

Alain Silver & Elizabeth Ward's "Film noir: An encyclopedic reference to the American style" (1992, 3rd ed.) lists 32 noir titles by Fox. Hence we can probably expect from Fox another 20 or so titles in the "Fox film noir" series. If these 32ish titles all materialize in this excellent series, it will be a big chunk both out of one's purse and DVD shelf space.

Popular comedian Brent Butt returns to small town Saskatchewan to portray the life he would have led had he gotten a real job - pumping gas at Corner Gas. Each episode of Corner Gas delivers a half-hour of comedic voyeurism in a place where everyone knows everyone else's business. The series is set in the fictional town of Dog River Saskatchewan, and focuses on the life (or lack thereof) of gas station owner Brent LeRoy, coffee shop proprietor Lacey Burrows and the folks who populate the area. Dog River is a nice town, but far from the quaint and idyllic little burgs we're used to seeing on TV.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2007-07-02

As an ex-pat Canadian, this DVD provided me with some much needed Canadian style humour. Most episodes are side-splittingly funny (ie The Tax Man). In my opinion, the best Canadian comedy since the newsroom.

5 out of 5 stars Too Good to be Such an Unknown.......2007-01-12

Having grown up in rural North Dakota, I can relate to the Dog River, Saskatchewan lifestyle. So when I saw my first episode of Corner Gas and found it hilarious, I didn't know if others would relate and enjoy the show as much as I did. There was no need to worry. I have introduced over a dozen people to Corner Gas and everyone loves it. Most are hooked after the first 30 seconds of the first episode. "Are you guys always this sarcastic?" "We've got nothing better to do." That sets the stage for the funniest sitcom to hit the airwaves. It's great for all ages. My 13 year old daughter loves it, as well as all of the adults I've shown it to. I only wish one of the US stations would pick it up, because I have to wait for each season to come out on DVD and order it. The third season just showed up this week and I can't wait to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Best sitcom on TV, Canadian or American.......2006-08-03

I was exposed to this wonder when I lived in Canada for a couple of months. I absolutely fell in love with it. As a American who misses the glory days of sitcom tv this show brings back the good old Seinfeld days. My husband and I have since purchased seasons 1 & 2 and are eagerly awaiting season 3. We have shown them to family in the states and everyone we have shown has fallen in love too and ordered their own copies. I recommend this purchase!!!

2 out of 5 stars Pretty bad..........2006-03-04

That last review from the American Corner Gas fan must either be a joke, or perhaps the reviewer could have had a few too many drinks before he wrote his review :) The truth is that "Corner Gas" is very dull to watch and not even remotely funny or entertaining in any way. The acting, writing, and production are so cheap and amateurish, its like watching a home movie somebody made with their video camera. And the jokes? They don't make me laugh, I just roll my eyes whenever I hear the hundredth joke about how small Dog River is, or how flat and empty the praries are. I would just like to tell Brent Butt, and every other person employed by this show that you guys are d@mn lucky that the federal government imposed those strict "Thirty Percent Canadian Content" regulations on Canadian radio and television broadcasters back in the '70s. Otherwise you guys would have no career in television, and this programme would have gone nowhere.

5 out of 5 stars An american in Dog River.......2006-01-06

Wow, I love this show. A friend sent this to me for Christmas and I want more. My first thought seeing it was, "Whoa! This is really Canadian." It's a very simple comedy with quick wit and smart sense of humor. I can't wait to see more.

4 out of 5 stars A Funny Shirley Temple Movie.......2007-01-14

Shirley Temple was the princess of the box office for 1936, 1937 and 1938. This movie was the final Shirley Temple movie of 1938. If you like Shirley Temple this movie wears well. This movie is cute and funny and there are several classic moments that made me laugh out loud.

Shirley returns home from boarding school because of an unspecified problem. After she returns home we learn that Shirley's architect father has lost his job and has moved from a penthouse apartment to the basement. Her father is now the electrician for the building in which they live. Shirley takes everything in stride and does her best to persevere.

Shirley Temple was about 10 years old when this movie was made, but she looks younger. She retains much of the charm she had as a little girl. Shirley manages to keep the action and the humor both high as we see her raise money for wealthy Samuel G. Henshaw, thinking that he is Uncle Sam. Shirley manages to cut the curls from a boy's hair, causing his mother to throw a genuine fit, simultaneously generating some of the best laughs in the movie. Shirley also manages to have a dance routine with Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, the fourth and last dance routine in a movie for Shirley and Bojangles.

Shirley Temple was finishing a phenomenal run as the most popular actor of her day, and the most popular child actor in history. She would have eighteen more film roles, some of which were very good, but this movie marks the dividing line between Shirley Temple the phenomenally popular child star, and Shirley Temple the modestly popular adolescent and teen star. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and if you have enjoyed other Shirley Temple movies, you will enjoy this one too!

4 out of 5 stars Shirley Temple Just Around the Corner.......2006-11-04

I purchased this DVD as my daughter is performing one of the songs from the movie. However as a family we have watched it many times and all three of my children now get great enjoyment from the movie and they all know the words to all of the songs. Very happy with the movie itself and the quality of the recording

5 out of 5 stars This is one of my favorites .......2006-08-26

Just around the corner is excellent in a musical way. I love this!

3 out of 5 stars Typical Shirley Temple; and lots of fun.......2000-09-01

Yes, her mom's dead, and she's taking care of dad. Yes, they go from riches to rags and back to riches again. And yes, everyone lives happily ever after. But don't you want a Temple film to be that way! And along the way are some really interesting turns and twists (besides the dance steps), like Shriley teaching a mama's boy to beat the other kids to the punch in a rather anti-Pygmalian side story; and some great laughs with a very young Eve Arden and a bunch of dogs in the kennel. Sound interesting? It is really quite unique and one of my favorites of the Shirley Temple collection.

    Product Description

Special Features: W5 Special "Beyond Corner Gas: Tales from dog river". Descriptive video for the visually impaired. "A Comedy Cup." - Winnipeg Free Press. You konw how we like our heroes larger than life. And you are aware that both Corner Gas creator Brent Butt and his Dog River alter ego Brent Leroy (aka self serviceman) are way into comic book lore. Thus the classic rendering of the cast by Canada'a illustrator graphic swashbuckler Ron Boyd. Yes, Corner Gas' 'Awesome Eight' once again drew on their uncanny comdedy superpowers in season Three to turn deceptively inane premises into comedy gold, destroying the evil competition and making our glorious land a safer place in which to laugh! And now that you have read this it's pretty clear that even thpugh our sleeve concept is somewhat outside the box, what' inside the box is the actual TV series and not some cartoon. We know you know. We just wanted to be the sake of truth, justice and the Canadian way! ------------------------------------ Season 3Episode 1: Dress for Success Episode 2: Key to the FutureEpisode 3: Dog River ViceEpisode 4: Will and BrentEpisode 5: The Littlest YarboEpisode 6: Mail FraudEpisode 7: Fun RunEpisode 8: Trees a CrowdEpisode 9: Picture PerfectEpisode 10: Safety First Episode 11: HairlossEpisode 12: Ruby NewsdayEpisode 13: Merry GasmasEpisode 14: Friend of a FriendEpisode 15: Block PartyEpisode 16: Physical CreditEpisode 17: Telescope TroubleEpisode 18: Bean ThereEpisode 19: Road Worthy

5 out of 5 stars Awesome clean comedy!.......2007-03-08

I'm from Canada, but I have been in Japan for much of the past 9 years, so I had never heard of Corner Gas. Then someone blessed me with season 3 of the show. I thought, "Hmm, Canadian animation. Interesting concept." Turns out it's not animation, but rather a sitcom not too different from Seinfeld. Of course the setting couldn't be more different! Corner Gas is set in small-town Saskatchewan, most of the scenes taking place at the local gas station or coffee shop. The show, though, is more character-driven than plot driven.

This is, like Seinfeld, a show mostly about nothing. It relies on the inventiveness of the writers to create absurd circumstances for their cast of quirky characters. Double the number of characters, though! With so many unique personalities, it seems these shows would practically write themselves. But I'm sure it's a lot harder than it looks. I love how each episode ends by tying in with the rest of the episode in some way. It is classic comedy, accessible and enjoyable for people of all ages, all walks of life. Canadians, introduce this show to your American and foreign friends! I'm sure they'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars Delivered when promised.......2007-02-22

This season of Corner Gas is very good, easily on par with season One and Two . For anyone who likes understated, clean comedy, this show is for you. You could watch this with your favorite grandmother and your best drinking buddy, and you would all be laughing.
