The Alfred Hitchcock Signature Collection contains the DVD debut of 8 Hitchcock classics including "Strangers on a Train Two-Disc Special Edition," and the following 7 new single-disc DVDs: "Dial M For Murder," "Foreign Correspondent" "Suspicion," "The Wrong Man," "Stage Fright," "I Confess" and "Mr. and Mrs. Smith." The previously released "North by Northwest" is also included in the 10-disc Signature Collection. Each of the 9 films in the collection shows why Hitchcock is regarded as one of Hollywood's most esteemed and important directors, and also brings legendary stars to the digital front including Cary Grant, Henry Fonda, Marlene Dietrich, Grace Kelly, Montgomery Clift and many others.

Strangers on a Train - En route from Washington, D.C., champion tennis player Guy Haines (Farley Granger) meets pushy playboy Bruno Anthony (Robert Walker). What begins as a chance encounter turns into a series of morbid confrontations, as Bruno manipulates his way into Guy's life. Bruno is eager to kill his father and knows Guy wants to marry a senator's daughter (Ruth Roman) but can't get a divorce from his wife. So Bruno suggests the men swap murders, which would leave no traceable clues or possible motives. Though Guy refuses, it won't be easy to rid himself of the psychopathic Bruno. Hitchcock's daughter Patricia appears in this film. The extra features included on the DVD are: Alternate 'preview' version of the film; Commentary by director Peter Bogdanovich, Psycho screenwriter Joseph Stephano, Strangers on a Train author Patricia Highsmith and biographer Andrew Wilson; New making-of documentary Strangers on a Train: A Hitchcock Classic, with Farley Granger, film historian Richard Schickel, Patricia Hitchcock O'Connell and other Hitchcock family members and colleagues recalling the making of this suspense landmark; Three intriguing featurettes: The Hitchcocks on Hitch, Strangers on a Train: The Victim's P.O.V., Strangers on a Train by M. Night Shyamalan; Alfred Hitchcock's Historical Meeting, a vintage newsreel.

Each DVD will be presented in a format preserving the aspect ratio of its original theatrical exhibition and will include the original theatrical trailer, and subtitles in English, French and Spanish.

This collection is absolutely fabulous. All the movies are remastered and are excellent quality especially on a big screen. Just as I remembered them. Too cool...

5 out of 5 stars a must for a fan.......2007-03-08

As a long time fan of Hitchcock, I am always looking for more. I have approx. 20 of his films on DVD. This collection has some that I had never seen before. In addition, the "making of" special features are great for someone who wants to know what made Hitch so unique as a film director. I have (and will) spend many hours viewing these discs.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-07-04

Great and deep movie, beautifully photographed. Great cast. Good job from Montgomery Cliff.

Of course, to me the star of the movie is Quebec City. I lived in Old Quebec for years, so it's quite a treat to see
the city so beautifully photographed. And see the actors walking on streets i know. And, yes, there is still a lot of one-way streets in the Old town.

At least one of the french-canadian actors playing bit parts in I Confess is still working in televison today ! And one of the witness little girls ( #2 ) was an anchorwoman on state television in the 80's.

4 out of 5 stars What would you do if you were in his place?.......2007-03-17

"I confess" (1953) is a film that is difficult to watch, but also regarding. This is not my favorite Hitchcock film, but I am glad I saw it, even though at times it was hard to endure all the things the main character had to go through in order to stay true to his beliefs.

The main character is Father Logan (Montgomery Clift), a priest that becomes the main suspect of a crime. He knows who the real murderer is, but cannot tell that to the police due to the fact that he had been told that in a confession. As circumstantial evidence condemns him, and people accuse him of shameful deeds, will Father Logan tell what he knows, or will he go on suffering, keeping the secret of confession ?

Montgomery Clift is perfect in his portrayal of Father Logan, a man of integrity faced with a crisis of conscience in a very trying situation. You cannot help being affected by the moral dilemma that Father Logan faces, because Clift conveys his anguish and sadness extremely well. You end up asking yourself a very difficult question: what would you do if you were in his place?

"I confess" (1953) is a beautiful film about difficult choices, and staying true to what we believe in. Even though most of this movie is pretty somber, the ending brings a note of hope that leaves the spectator thoughtful but not sad. Of course, recommended...

4 out of 5 stars The seal of confession is highly illustrated by Hitchcock's "I Confess" .......2007-01-02

If the transfer of culpability was a basic theme in Hitchcock's "Strangers on a Train," it furnished the provocative dilemma to "I Confess."

A German refugee, Keller (O.E. Hasse), murders a lawyer named Vilette (Ovila Legare) when he is caught stealing... Keller thereupon confesses his crime to Father Michael Logan (Montgomery Clift), a priest at the Quebec church where he is a sexton...

Vilette was blackmailing Ruth Grandfort (Anne Baxter), who was in love with Logan before he was ordained and who continues to love him in spite of his religious vows and her subsequent marriage to Pierre Granfort (Roger Dann).

Keller wore a cassock when he committed the crime and Father Logan is unable to supply an alibi for the time of the murder - a series of coincidences which eventually find the priest on trial for murder...

The dilemma of "I Confess" relates to Catholic church law which specifically forbids the clergy from disclosing those sins exposed in the privacy of the confessional... Thus forced into complicity with the murderer, Father Logan behaves as though he is guilty despite his innocence in much the same way Guy Haines takes on some of Bruno's guilt in Hitchcock's "Strangers on a Train." The film's tension derives from the audience's knowledge of the cleric's ethical problem and its desire to see him break his vows to save his own life...

Montgomery Clift makes the clergyman's inner torment apparent simply by the anguished expression in his eyes, and creates sympathy for a man who could be an object of mockery by maintaining his dignity...

Compassionate, grave, and restrained, Clift delineates the priest's conflicting emotions with the distinguished nuances of expression... His face, vulnerable but brighter by discerning yet kind eyes, reveals his suffering with eloquent intensity...

While a determined Karl Malden looks for every scrap of information to clear the murder, an embarrassing crown prosecutor (Brian Aherne) is in despair to establish a motive for the murder...

With moody atmosphere, set against the background of picturesque Quebec photographed in black and white, "I Confess" is solemn and entertaining, never getting out of control, with an overpowering sense of doom and enough amount of suspense in the manhunt of a killer...

4 out of 5 stars another Hitchcock classic.......2006-08-04

Hitchcock's "I Confess" with Montgomery Clift and Anne Baxter is not necessarily among his greatest directorial acheivements. however, it is engrossing entertainment with Clift and Baxter both delivering stellar performances. any Hitchcock fan should enjoy this little gem.

4 out of 5 stars Neat little Hitchcock!.......2006-08-01

I call this a "little Hitchcock" because it is a lesser known and short film directed by the Master. I have seen the majority of Hitchcocks films and consider myself a fan, yet I had never seen this one until two days ago. I was very pleasantly surprised.

Montgomery Clift is perfectly cast in the role of a priest caught between a rock and a hard place. The turmoil in his role was played perfectly by him. This priest had been the receiver of a murder confession, and now he is haunted with the knowledge yet unable to do anything about it in his loyalty to his priestly vows.

The complications to the story are feasible and suspenseful, and the resolution works out logically. I was very pleased with this film as a refreshingly "different yet same" film from the best suspense director of all time.

Play close attention to the ironic last line muttered to "Father Logan."
