Cy Endfield co-wrote the epic prequel Zulu Dawn 15 years after his enormously popular Zulu. Set in 1879, this film depicts the catastrophic Battle of Isandhlwana, which remains the worst defeat of the British army by natives, with the British contingent outnumbered 16-to-1 by the Zulu tribesmen. The film's opinion of events is made immediately clear in its title sequence: ebullient African village life presided over by King Cetshwayo is contrasted with aristocratic artifice under the arrogant eye of General Lord Chelmsford (Peter O'Toole). Chelmsford is at the heart of all that goes wrong, initiating the catastrophic battle with an ultimatum made seemingly for the sake of giving his troops something to do. His detached manner leads to one mistake after another, and this is wryly illustrated in a moment when neither he nor his officers can be bothered to pronounce the name of the land they're in. That it's a beautiful land nonetheless is made clear by the superb cinematography, which drinks in the massive open spaces that shrink the British army to a line of red ants. Splendidly stiff-upper-lipped support comes from a heroic Burt Lancaster and a fluffy, yet gruff, Bob Hoskins. Although the story is less focused and inevitably more diffuse than the concentrated events of Rorke's Drift which followed soon after, Zulu Dawn is an unflinchingly honest depiction of British Imperial diplomacy. --Paul Tonks

Description

A prequel to the war epic "Zulu", this dramatic story recounts the breathtaking defeat of British forces at the hands of a 25,000 strong and relentlessly determined Zulu army in 1870. The all-star cast, and extravagant production quality make Zulu Dawn a spectacular film with a guaranteed place in the list of Hollywood Greats.

Slow, dull and done on the "cheap"....stick with "Zulu" and read your history book's ....far more entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Black Hawk Dawn.......2007-03-19

A rare historically correct film that shows the defeat of a modern army by primitive forces. History is written by the victor but in this case you find a British film which admits a ruinous defeat by African Warriors.
What you don't find here is the fact that the Zulus were being gunned down continuously but due to the constant firing of the British issued Martini rifles, the weapons overheated causing them to malfunction.
The film also expresses the pompous arrogant attitudes of some of the British Officers who overestimated themselves thus underestimating the enemy.
There was a scene with ammo distribution which teaches us that strict attention to accountability by some of the non-commissioned officers eventually led to their demise thus the rules and tactics of an organized army can work against itself when dealing with warrior factions.
It is a strong film and reminds me of "Black Hawk Down". Burt Lancaster's character is undercasted here. He deserved a much better role. Michael Caine should have been in this one along with Peter O'Toole & Richard Harris.

4 out of 5 stars Worthy .......2007-03-15

Its hard to know if you would understand what actually happened at Isandlewana if all you had to go on was this film - but all the elements are there - Screwed down ammo boxes - underestimation of Zulu capabilities - A trumped up rationalization of why we are going to annex Zulu land. The personalities - or lack of them - Overall a feast for the Military Historian. Not as satisfactory as a Movie (no happy ending here). The missing element here is that although this was a major embarrassment for the British Empire - The subsequent victory at Rourkes drift allowed them to save face - regroup and ultimately devastate the Zulus

5 out of 5 stars Never Let Pride Under Estimate your Opponent.......2007-02-15

If you own Zulu, then you should purchase Zulu Dawn as this put into perspective the greatness of the Zulu Nation. It is slower that Zulu, as it must lay the ground work for the greatest humiliation of the British Army and why. The slaughter is swift, the defeat masterful and pride over arching.

4 out of 5 stars Two Parts.......2007-02-12

This makes a nice companion piece to the movie Zulu. Released after Zulu, this movie is never the less a prequel. Both movies are stand alone, so it is not imperative to see one or the other before viewing either. A first rate cast and African scenery makes this a winner. Though there seems to be a bit of an anti-British undercurrent, the movie has only a few historical inaccuracies. The British did make a mistake, and sadly for the men involved, it resulted in the greatest defeat of a modern army by a tribal force. Incredible battle scenes make this a must.

Mixing action, humor, sentiment, and even a few righteous moral convictions, The Wild Geese is good, rousing fun. Released theatrically in 1978 (oddly, this 2005 DVD release is referred to as the "30th Anniversary Edition"), director Andrew V. McLaglen's film depicts the adventures of a group of British mercenaries hired by a shady multinational corporation to free the benevolent leader of an African nation held captive by a ruthless dictator. Led by the caustic, no-nonsense Col. Allen Faulkner (Richard Burton), these soldiers of fortune are all stout fellows out to earn a big payday and restore a good man to his rightful place of power (the underlying message of universal racial brotherhood is effective, if somewhat simplistic), and they do their job swiftly and efficiently... at least until they're double-crossed by their venal, perfidious employers, at which point the film becomes a tale of survival and revenge. The cast, which also includes Richard Harris, Roger Moore, and a host of other fine veteran actors, is first-rate, the story-telling efficient, the dialogue entertaining (with occasional bursts of profanity), and the action reasonably exciting and not overly graphic. And even if the pace is somewhat leisurely by new millennium standards (we're nearly an hour into it before the actual mission starts), The Wild Geese is a very enjoyable ride. Bonus features include a profile of producer Euan Lloyd and commentary by Lloyd, Moore, and journalist Jonathan Sothcott. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars Great Quality.......2007-04-11

My husband has worn out his VHS of this movie, and he was so pleased with the quality of this DVD! It's a good "old school" action flick, with humor, plot and good character developement.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Perfect.......2007-03-28

I first saw The Wild Geese when I was quite young but I remembered it well so I had to buy it when it came out on DVD. I hadn't seen it in years so I was a bit worried it wouldn't live up to my memory, but my fears were put to rest quickly. The movie is still fantastic even though it is getting on in years. It is as relevant today as it was when it was produced. If you got rid of the fly collars and 70's looking clothes you could rerelease this movie as is and people would go to see it.

4 out of 5 stars The Wild Geese Fly Again.......2007-03-19

I liked this film. Again it is made with the poor quality by which most of the films in the 1970's were but the legendary cast and unique military script really place this movie in higher perspectives. I enjoyed the entire story line. It flows from one scene to another and you can't help it but to like each of the characters and their down on their luck attitudes. What this movie goes to show is that you can make a great film when you have actors with chemistry unlike the artificial version of another film "Tears of the Sun" starring Bruce Willis which attempts to copy "..Wild Geese" but fails.

3 out of 5 stars Silly, but good fun.......2007-03-14

This is one of those movies that probably played better at the time, but after thirty or so years isn't quite as realistic sounding as it might be. An all-star cast with the Richards (Burton and Harris), Hardy Kruger, and Roger Moore, lead a group of mercenaries into Africa to rescue the imprisoned Mandela-like "leader of his people" who will presumably be willing to make a deal with a multi-national corporation (headed by the oily Stuart Granger). We're introduced to the characters in suitable 70s-intro fashion, and it's one of the problems with the film: Burton's the cynic, Harris is more of an idealist, Moore's the wisecracking tough guy who's always getting into trouble, and Kruger's the racist South African who just wants a farm he can call his own. By the time you're done with the intros, you should know who's going to live and who will die at the end of the movie. It's very predictable.

The theme of the movie, racial reconciliation in Africa, is of course more or less commendable. Unfortunately, this long after the movie, the whites have left everywhere but South Africa, pretty much, and the blacks have taken to killing each other (Darfur, for instance, and Rwanda/Burundi). As a result, the sentiments expressed in the movie, looked back on from this far afterwards, seem unreasonably idealistic and optimistic.

It's always fun to see a war movie from this era. Hollywood wasn't big on doing things realistically (this is the era of the six-shooter you never reloaded, and the "flesh wound" in the shoulder) and so it was fun, for instance, to see Roger Moore sneak up on an African bad guy with a cigar in his teeth (they stink, the guy would have sniffed him out a hundred feet away). There also was a marvelously contrived, unrealistic episode involving shooting sentries with a crossbow loaded with cyanide crystals, and later a scenario involving gassing sleeping soldiers, when it certainly looked like it would have been easier to shoot them with silenced guns.

All of that being bad, I don't think Burton or Harris were ever really terrible in a movie. Granted they're not at the top of their game, but then again they're not terrible, either. Moore's his usual wiseacre self, and Kruger, given the trite dialog they gave him, does OK. Granger does a good turn as the bad guy. If you're interested in this sort of thing, it's a fun movie, and I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Wild Geese.......2007-03-04

This is one of the best movies of its type. This action packed movie makes the Dogs of War look second rated.
This movie was made into multi languages and one can see why.
The Wild Geese has a good script and the action is good for a movie made in 1978.The cast is brilliant just look at the actors Richard Harris,Hardy Kruger,Roger Moore and Stewart Grainger.
This movie is a must buy for people who collect action movies.

Bernardo Bertolucci's controversial 1973 film stars Marlon Brando as an expatriate American in Paris reeling from his wife's suicide and entering into a nihilistic sexual relationship with a young woman (Maria Schneider). The film is still shocking, not simply because of its (sometime unconventional) sexual sequences, but because Brando's protagonist needs his liaison with Schneider's character to remain anonymous, an experience not to be shared but indulged on either end. Bertolucci is also operating on subtext here: in a way, Brando's nonengaging engagement is a metaphor for a certain attitude toward directing movies. Jean-Pierre Léaud costars, but the film is more than anything a vehicle for a great performance by Brando. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Last Tango in Paris.......2007-07-04

Scandalous in 1972 and still unsettling today, Bertolucci's bizarre, fascinating psychodrama depicts sex not as a union of two human beings, but as a reflection of their alienation from each other. While the butter scene is justly famous, this isn't the only reason "Tango" stays with you. Just watch Brando closely: at certain moments you catch a glimpse of that fiery young man in the ripped tee-shirt, railing against the world's injustices, down but never out, and utterly, brilliantly alive.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely HATED the end..........2007-07-03

Aside from the infamous "butter" and the "pig f***" scene--which are embarrassing and can't bring myself to watch!--I wasn't exactly shocked at this movie at all. Now that sex/porn is pretty much in the open, you can't be shocked at this film. I love Marlon Brando, and as usual, his performance was an emotionally intense one. I didn't realize how comical and jocular Mr. Brando was until watching this movie. Despite the gloom, and dark (or orange tone!) of the film, I managed a chuckle and a good laugh from his dialog... I wish Maria Schneider's character was more developed in this film. It just seems "Paul" and her geeky boyfriend (and Bertolucci) used her as nothing but an object. I wanted to know more about her character and what the deal was with her deceased father and whether Paul putting on her father's uniform hat triggered some sort of rage within. Did he sexually abuse her? Other questions plagued me. Was Paul his wife's murderer? Was his wife a former prostitute? The end sickened me because you want (I wanted) "Jeanne" and "Paul" to fall in love and live happily ever after...but in this demented, depraved Bertolucci flick that wasn't gonna happen!

I cried at the end because it was just so confusing and tragic...this poor man--despite his actions--finds love, refuge, and happiness and they're all literally shot down.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning performance by Brando.......2007-06-11

On the cover of the paperback edition of my novel A Perfectly Natural Act there is the blurb: "As compelling as Last Tango in Paris!" (This is not a shameless plug since my novel is long out of print.) When your work is touted as being "like" some earlier, successful work, you can be sure what is really being said is your work is not all that good and needs some hype to move it off the shelves.

So it took me 33 years to finally get around to watching "Last Tango..." and that is all to the good because if I had watched it when I was young, the barbarous sexuality would have sorely distracted me. Well, Maria Schneider (Jeanne) would have. She is very sexy and is shown complete ("she comes complete"!) in a number of scenes. Her acting ability has been challenged by some, but I thought she did a nice job in a difficult role.

Problem was she was paired opposite Marlon Brando (Paul) who was busy giving one of his greatest performances. Brando said some time afterwards that he never wanted to do anything like this again. Presumably he was referring to the depressing nature of human sexuality portrayed in the film. This is ironic since most of the raunchy and degrading lines are spoken by Brando who improvised them himself! He later commented that some of the lines written by director Bernado Bertolucci were not to his liking. What I think happened is Bertolucci wanted to live out as a director one of his youthful fantasies (raw, anonymous sex with a young beauty) and Brando, with his ultra sophistication about such matters, played his part with a brutal satirical edge, perhaps making fun of Bertolucci's fantasy, turning it into an unpleasant, hard reality.

But the "reality" was a bit over the top for everybody. The infamous "Get the butter" scene, which was improvised by Brando and Bertolucci (to Schneider's dismay), made it clear that Paul considered Jeanne an animal that you used and nothing more. The dead rat scene and all the pig talk, ditto. Brando was also projecting his own feelings. He was 48-years-old when the film was released and was getting a paunch and losing his muscle tone. All the sex scenes but one are filmed with Brando clothed so as not to make the decline of his physical prowess obvious. He projected his own feelings about the decline of his body by referring derisively to his hemorrhoids, his prostate, and his paunch.

What Brando does so very well here is become that animalistic, but thinking brute who has his way with women because they cannot resist his alpha male prowess regardless of the gray in his hair. The early scene in the apartment when the nameless Brando just takes the nameless Schneider without so much as a spoken word or a caress might make women say "if only more men could be so commanding," and men say "I wish I had that kind of confidence." I am reminded of Brando's Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) except that here little is left to the imagination. The Brando that was Kowalski at twenty-seven (with an I.Q. upgrade) could easily be the Brando that was Paul at forty-eight.

Almost all the discussion about this movie is about Brando, and that is certainly understandable since, despite all the ugliness of the film, it featured one of Brando's greatest performances. However, the movie was and is Bertolucci's. He wrote it and directed it. His original cut runs something like four hours. The version here rated NC-17 runs 136 minutes. The problem is that just about everything in the movie that does not included Brando is a bit of an anticlimax or an irrelevancy. Jean-Pierre Leaud (Tom) of Truffaut's The Four Hundred Blows (1959) fame plays a film maker and Jeanne's intended. He was possibly chosen for the film because his boyish style and demeanor would contrast so sharply with Brando's commanding style. Two lovers had Jeanne: one was easy and boring, the other was scary and exciting. But I think Bertolucci was also having some fun with the French cinema and especially with Francois Truffaut. Perhaps it is only a coincidence that a year later Truffaut would release Day for Night (1973) (La Nuit americaine) in which Truffaut plays a director directing Leaud in a kind of pleasing but lightweight film contrasting sharply with the dark psychosis of Last Tango.

I don't think I could sit through the four hour version but it might be a good learning experience for young film makers. At any rate, perhaps some of the seeming illogic of the film might become reasonable, including the all too easy and not entirely explicable ending. I rate this film very highly because it was innovative (rather shocking for its time), with a fine jazz score, but mostly because of Brando's stellar performance and the sensual beauty of a 20-year-old Maria Schneider. By the way, the film is in French and English with subtitles. Brando's French is amusing, and whoever dubbed Schneider's English has a cute and witty voice.

Another excellent (and very beautiful) film by Bertolucci is The Conformist (1970) starring Jean-Louis Trintignant, Stefania Sandrelli, and Dominique Sanda. Interestingly enough Sanda was originally picked for Last Tango, as was Trintignant, and she would have given some needed depth to Jeanne's character, but she declined I guess because of all the nudity. Ironically a few years later Schneider was tabbed to play the lead in Luis Brunuel's That Obscure Object of Desire (1977) but dropped out during the filming reportedly because of a nude scene! Maybe she was afraid of becoming typecast.

I guess the bottom line on Last Tango is that it is an uncomfortable film illuminated by a veracious Parisian feel and a truly stunning performance by one of the greatest actors to ever grace the silver screen.

5 out of 5 stars Brando and Paris.......2007-05-25

Saw this movie not long after it was released,I was stationed at Hamilton Air Force Base, close to San Francisco.Brando's brillant performance was considered scandalous at the time.In 1973,I found Bertolucci's vision of middle age a bit over-the-top,and I could not connect to Paul,or Brando as Paul.I did connect to the look and colors of the film.....at the age of 56 I can better understand the simple, hard, truth that lies within this film. "Last Tango",Bertolucci, uses Brando,Brando uses the camera,Bertolucci and Brando, let us see ourselves, post youth ,middleaged, realizing someone other than yourself cannot make you happy...you must find the happiness within yourself...then Paris will become a lightful city again.....

1 out of 5 stars A WASTE OF TIME & MONEY.......2007-05-24

This is one of the worst show I've ever seen. Don't waste your money buying it. Your time is better spent cleaning out gutters than watching this tripe.

I would have rated this show minus stars if it were possible.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite up to scratch, but worth the price........2007-06-16

Because it's hard to find anything on the older fighters, this DVD does fill a kind of boxing black hole; among the fighters on this compilation are ones that you rarely get to see at all.
For instance, you get the Will of the Wisp against rough-housing Sandy Saddler; it was the first time I'd ever seen Pep fight, and he's simply mesmerizing (watch him and you'll see where Orlando Canizales picked up his style). Jersey Joe Walcott's on this DVD too - he does the herky-jerky, slips and slides and shuffles his way past Joe Louis (though Louis gets the nod - go figure!). And the amazing Kid Chocolate's on the menu as well.
One of the truly great fights though, the 1909 Clash of the Titans between Stanley Ketchel and Jack Johnson, - a vicious middleweight against a skilful heavyweight - is extremely disappointing. After several minutes of the fight, suddenly, magically, inexplicably, we see Johnson down and then Ketchel on his back - without seeing the punches that did the damage! Additionally, the Walcott-Louis fight included here needs redoing - Walcott's torso disappears into the dark background of the crowd so that Louis appears to be fighting just a pair of boxing trunks with legs attached! This DVD also gives you the Tunney-Dempsey fights twice - why? No man can say!
All in all, it's worth buying to have some of the old-time greats on your DVD shelf, but don't expect too much from either the film quality or the footage.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF A KIND.......2007-04-08

I did not realize such DVD's existed and found it by accident. It provides footage of fighters not seen in fifty years or more. DVD actually has footage of a Jim Corbett fight from early 1900s. It is not the best quality but neither was Corbett, who was at the end of his career. However, it provided a view of Corbett's boxing style and why it was so successful at the turn of the century.

There are several Joe Louis matches which allows viewer to see strengths and weaknesses in his boxing ability. It was surprising to see the number of times Louis was knocked down by different fighters and what allowed him to win so many fights: the power of his right hand.

It does not have many fights after 1950 but those matches are not as rare. Any boxing fan will love this DVD. I purchased a second copy for a friend because he is a big fight fan.

5 out of 5 stars The Roar of the Crowd.......2007-04-06

Emma and I sat on the couch watching the DVD of the 45 Fantastic Fights of the Century. She bought it for me for Christmas, thinking that I would be pleased. I appreciated the sentiment, but I had not been following boxing for some time. Yet, Emma was young and believed in love and fairytales (which she would never admit), and had for years found an odd-fascination with my first husband, Rocco, a man that died before she was born, before I met her father, and before I decided that I hated sports of any kind. This statement is not entirely true, and I continue to long for the afternoons I can spend at the baseball park, hearing the crack of the ball, and eating popcorn and peanuts. But boxing is different. Boxing was my first love. Watching the video brought back many memories. Some fights lasted for, what felt like hours, others mere minutes. The men were strong and powerful, and vicious. That is what Rocco lacked. The last time he was scheduled to fight he swore to me that he would win. He ached to be like Jack Johnson and Max Baer. What happened next crushed him.

Prior to the fight, the promoters demanded that all new welterweight boxers report to the training center. The gossips said that the National Hall was only going to hold heavyweight fights. The rest of the men would have to find a new venue. Phone calls were made, someone put an ad in the Chronicle, and some of the fighters even made their own rings in backyards and empty lots. But Rocco needed the shine of the lights and the roar of the crowd. It didn't matter much that they rooted against him.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD OVERALL DVD.......2007-03-15

I BOUGHT THIS BECAUSE ME AND MY 7 YEAR OLD SON LOVE BOXING. I WANTED HIM TO SEE SOME OLD FIGHTS AND I ALSO WANTED TO SEE SOME THAT I HAD NEVER SEEN. THIS DVD WAS ALL THAT I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE AND MORE. WE LOVED IT AND GIVE IT TWO THUMBS UP AND FIVE STARS.

4 out of 5 stars Complete History?.......2007-03-13

I've searched, and so far, I have not come across a boxing (mainly Heavyweight) DVD, with more footage from the early years 1900-1950,
than this one. The only one that comes close is the DVD "The Kings of the Ring".

I realize, the earlier you go back, the footage will be horrible, limited camera views, but, its part of Boxing history, so, show it.
In VHS, you can probably find a few good ones with older fights,
if you look long enough.

The footage is fair to good quality on most of them. Lots of fights on here too, from 1909 to the 1950s, maybe one from the early 60's.
Going back to Jack Johnson, Jess Willard(Not fighting Johnson), James Braddock, Max Baer, Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey and many more.

More DVD's like this, need to be released. I wouldn't call this the best, I'd call this one, the only one, with a more complete history of the early fights. Some of these might be considered rare fights, that you might not find on other DVDs.

I say its worth the 10 dollars.

Buy it.

Difficult to copy movements with dancers facing learner and one camera angle only.

5 out of 5 stars Fabian Salas is the Best!.......2007-04-06

This DVD is easy to understand and does explain the fundamentals of Argentine Tango. I used this DVD prior to taking a basic Tango class and felt very confident when I got there. Not to mention, that my Tango instructors studied with Fabian Salas in Argentina! Highly recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars Plain and Simple!.......2007-03-21

Both my husband and I loved this instructional DVD. Great introduction to the Argentine Tango and have already recommended it to others. Easy lessons to follow, to understand and to enjoy. Already ordered the next two volumes! Because of the confidence this DVD provided we have already signed up for a local Tango Festival.........and not as beginners!

5 out of 5 stars Fabian & Cecilia.......2007-01-16

Fabian Salas is phenomenal -- but it takes two. His partner in this video is Cecilia Gonzalez. She's the closest thing to both pure magic and zen clarity in the Tango world, as an instructor & performer.

5 out of 5 stars A easy way to learn this fancy dance.......2006-08-30

I like this DVD, it's very easy to follow, you can surf the chapters very easy through the DVD menu. It has 10 Chapters and it goes from the easy ones to the hard ones. I buy it for my wedding because we need to practice it and it was wonderful. If you are thinking in buy it, make sure first to have a big space in your room for dancing.

I definitely recommend this DVD!

1 out of 5 stars Disapointing for female brand new beginners.......2007-06-17

I, too, was inspired by Dancing With The Stars, and signed up at a well-known dance school franchise. After 2-3 weeks of attending private and group lessons, I got this DVD thinking it'd serve as a refresher so I could practice at home. To my surprise: no instructions for the ladies. Instead, when Len gives the instructions slowly, the lady moves out of the hold to stand BESIDE the man, and THEY BOTH DO THE MAN'S moves! The camera zooms in to show both of them doing the exact footwork side by side--helpful for men only, I'd say! I want to see that pair of pumps do the lady's role! When they finally do the entire movement in the hold (in position), it is too short of a time period for a new beginner to absorb what the lady is doing. I wish that they had eliminated Len's 4-lines of poetry that he does to (aptly)describe each dance, and use the time to teach the ladies' role.
Also, for Rhumba, the beginning basic move in my class has been the box-step, but this shows another (easy) move (that I learned later.)The Foxtrot shown in the DVD was SO different it really threw me, but later Len shows a variation called the Social Foxtrot, which is what I've learned.
Watching the DVD again, after a total of 4 weeks of studio training, I could make much more sense of what was being shown. But if you are a female just beginning ballroom dance, there have got to be better DVD's.

5 out of 5 stars Elegant basic ballroom dance instruction.......2007-06-01

I ordered this DVD for my parents' anniversary despite the previous review mainly because they love Dancing with the Stars and the finals were on their anniversary. As you can imagine, I was a bit apprehensive about it. I was pleasantly surprised!

First, the previous reviewer is correct. They do demonstrate the man's steps and then expect the ladies to do the "natural opposite." I found that to be quite easy if I learned the male version first, and then reversed it. If I tried to think "His left is my right," etc. as I was first learning it, it was hard. On the video the lady does the male version as they teach the steps, and then when they get into the holds and face each other, she does her version. (You can pretty much watch her feet the whole time.)

Next, the professional dancers do have exhibition dances to demonstrate what a Fox Trot, Quick Step, Waltz, etc. CAN look like. Do not expect to be able to follow them after five to ten minutes of instruction per dance! This is a demonstration of THE BASICS.

(For some reason I can't edit the number of stars.) I gave it five stars originally right after I had watched all of the instructions, but before I had clicked on the part of the DVD that said practice. I would take a couple of stars off for that. When I first clicked on that, I thought the DVD was stuck! The practice portion for each dance is just a still picture with music! Couldn't they have just filmed the dancers doing the basic steps to music for a few minutes of practice time? How hard would that be? This way you have to flip back to the instructions to remind yourself of the steps and then go back to the music section if you want to practice. (Personally, I think leaving the DVD on the instructions and popping in a CD of appropriate music would be easier than that for practice!)

I'm still glad that I got it because it helped clarify the differences between a lot of dances, but I'm not as impressed with it as I was originally.

1 out of 5 stars No dance lessons here...........2007-05-19

I was really looking forward to getting this DVD as I love Dancing With The Stars and am a big fan of Len Goodman and wanted to learn more of the ballroom style dances. I just finished going through this DVD with my husband and we were terribly disappointed with the instruction. It was hard to see the dancers when they were demonstrating the moves and the ladies' (or "girls'" as Len says) footwork is never broken down. Len just says to do the natural opposite of the men, but never has his dancers show it. Well, when you watch the dancers, you can tell the ladies aren't doing the "natural opposite" or anything that looks opposite, so I was rather lost. The dancers did cool demos of each dance, but the dance steps they taught looked nothing like what they demonstrated. Overall, I was very disappointed. Not worth the money. I love to dance, and have reviewed a few other DVDs along this same line - some of them are pricier, but definitely worth the investment - you'll actually learn to dance.

Wonderful and soulful. Very artistic and great sense of the real tang of Argentina. A must have for would be dancers of the tango. In Spanish with subtitles however.

3 out of 5 stars You can turn them off.......2007-04-11

There is a way to turn off the subtitles...it makes the movie much more watchable trust me. We watched it in my college spanish class and it took us an entire day but you are able to turn them off, you just really have to play with the dvd remote you have, once the movie has already started...it won't work if you try to turn it off in the menu, don't ask me why, because that would actually make sense haha...but it IS possible to turn them off, try and then watch it, trust me it's better!

1 out of 5 stars Technical screwup makes this a disappointment.......2007-04-11

Do not under any circumstances buy this DVD. This could have been a very interesting and beautiful film. It's beautifully photographed. The choreography is beautiful and the dancing is excellent. It's visually delightful. BUT, like many other viewers I was perplexed and mightily annoyed by the persistence of the director's commentary running through the entire film. What's up with that? I noticed that in the option for the director's commentary audio track was set ON by default, so I turned the option off, but then when I started the movie up the director's commentary track came on anyway! There is no way to turn it off. I think this is pretty clearly a technical screwup on the part of whoever did the DVD programming. They mistakenly made the director's-commentary-track option always on instead of making it a settable/resettable option which is normal for DVDs. And apparently they never tested the DVD before it was mass-produced, so this unfortunate error ended up being duplicated on zillions of copies of this film. It's a real shame because this mistake has totally ruined what would otherwise have been an extremely interesting movie.

5 out of 5 stars Tango Excellence.......2007-03-19

Well conceived, directed and acted! Tango was inserted into this story seamlessly and beautifully. The story itself was excellent and had several fascinating twists. As for the dancing, all that can be said is "FABULOUS". Music and dance in this film is top notch. For me the final determination of a film is whether it can be watched more than once. Truthfully, this will be one of my favorites for all times.

1 out of 5 stars a disappointment.......2007-01-10

This DVD was a complete disappointment. The cover says that this is "Flamboyant. Colorful. Sensual." There was no plot, or story. The whole DVD was a narrator talking about the film. Very boring, possibly the most boring DVD ever made. We've watched a few of Carolos Saura's flamenco videos and loved them. Perhaps there was a film with a plot, but this DVD is just narrative. Terrible.

Not to be confused with Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer, which aired in the mid-'80s, or the several made-for-TV movies produced during that same decade, Mike Hammer Private Eye offers all 26 episodes (totaling more than twenty hours and four double-sided discs) from the single season (1997-98) in which Mickey Spillane's pulp P.I. was revived for a syndicated series.

What all of the above have in common is Stacy Keach in the title role; and despite the many Mike Hammers (including Armand Assante, Brian Keith, Ralph Meeker, Darren McGavin, and even author Spillane himself) who preceded him, Keach makes the part his own. He was in his mid-fifties by then, not exactly light on his feet anymore, and sporting a hairpiece that does him no favors. But in Keach's hands, Hammer is an appealing hero, flawed but likable. This time around he's dealing with computers, Internet porn, tobacco company whistle blowers, talk radio blowhards, and other funky features of the late 20th Century, along with the usual whores, junkies, and assorted lowlifes. But Hammer is still a tough-talking, hard-punching lug, engaging in macho repartee ("What're you, drunk?" "Nah, just thirsty"), dispensing world-weary voice-overs ("Art? I couldn't tell a fresco from a Fresca"), and remaining fiercely loyal to his friends and helpers (including Shannon Whirry as sexy secretary Velda and Shane Conrad as kid sidekick Nick) as he doggedly seeks and destroys the bad guys ("I'm not a killer, Mike. I'm a pervert!").

Too bad the rest of Mike Hammer Private Eye (whose meager bonus features include a recent interview with the star) doesn't quite measure up to Keach's engaging performance. The budget for this series was clearly lacking; production values are pretty poor (with cheesy interiors that bring to mind Jack Webb's Dragnet, produced some thirty years earlier), and a good number of the supporting actors are less than stellar. But whereas one could never quite be sure if Webb's Sgt. Joe Friday was as square as he seemed, there's no doubt that Keach and everyone else involved have their tongues planted firmly in cheek, which makes Mike Hammer Private Eye a genuine hoot. At the very least, any show that uses "Harlem Nocturne" for a theme song has got to be worth checking out. --Sam Graham

Description

Created by acclaimed detective noir author Mickey Spillane, private eye Mike Hammer (Stacy Keach) is a hard-boiled, two fisted detective who mixes it up with tough guys on a mission, clean and dirty cops on the beat and drop-dead gorgeous dames with plenty of attitude. A steamy throwback to the classic film noir thrillers of the '50s, Mike Hammer is one tough cookie.

3 out of 5 stars 2nd Mike Hammer Not As Good As First.......2007-03-17

When I bought this video I thought it was the 1980's series. Although it has its good points, I would not recommend it. There is more violence as well as sexual aspects that make it more unappealing to me. Stacy Keach does a good job, but the plots are predictable and the narration by Keach
is so complicated that it is hard to keep up with. Again I have enjoyed it, but it is not nearly as good as the Mike Hammer series in the 1980's.
The fact that it did not last long on the air should tell you something about it.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining Hammer series from the 90's.......2007-01-20

Stacey Keach returned to the role of Mike Hammer in this fun 90's TV series. Keach is perfect as Mike Hammer and it's nice to see him play a slightly older version of the character. It's a blast watching Mike deal with modern devices like computers. The tougher tone of the 90's series also adds to the fun. There's also plenty of comedy in Private Eye. I'm a big fan of Keach's 80's Hammer series and I like this 90's version too. Mike Hammer, Private Eye is great fun.

1 out of 5 stars NOT THE REAL THING!.......2006-08-07

Except for Stacy Keach, this show was a complete bomb
I had bought the dvd at an auction....because when I was looking at the credits, Lindsay Bloom, who played Velda, was listed....but to my surprise (yikes) this wasn't the Mike Hammer from 1984
Don't waste your money!

5 out of 5 stars Mickey Spillane's Best Character EVER.......2006-07-08

What I've always liked about Mike Hammer, is he's down to earth. I love CSI, and I've got perfect vision, but even I would have a hard time spotting the micro sized evidence CSI agents see with their naked eyes from across a room. Come on guys, I know it's just a show, but you've got to be a little realistic, yet that's just what they do. They walk into a crime scene and see a single hair all the way across the room in the carpet. I mean come on!!! Now back to Mike Hammer, He wins most of his fights, and loses a few (even some of the best fighters in the world have lost a few). He collects baseball cards, eats pizza hot or cold, and loves a good looking lady. He figures out his cases by deduction, logic, and luck, and he's often behind on the rent. The series has well timed action, but not overly done like many shows today, and it's not nearly as gory(CSI has gone too far even though it is a favorite program). There's drama, horror, comedy, and of course Spice. And no other actor has ever portrayed the part better than STACY KEACH (bring back the series America!!!)
I've watched these episodes so many times I feel I could quote them word for word. I love'em, and if you like "as real as it gets" detective stories, you'll love it too.

Robert Duvall's fascination with tango finds its expression in this labor of love, a film he wrote, directed, and stars in. Duvall plays a professional hit man on a job in Argentina. Forced to kill time instead of his target, he learns about tango, and meets a beautiful young dancer who teaches him the art. Seeing this precise, passionate dance, one feels no doubt it is worthy of Duvall's obsession. The hit-man plotline becomes less urgent as the movie goes on, and the director's loose, improvisatory approach makes for a certain sketchiness in scenes. But, like Duvall's marvelously odd The Apostle, the darn thing is intriguing. In leading lady Luciana Pedraza, Duvall has found a stunning partner--a slinky tango dancer and a beguiling actress. (One has no doubt she is worthy of his obsession, too.) This is a film from the "uneven" file, but like many such movies, it has its attractions. --Robert Horton

Description

OscarÂ(r) winner* Robert Duvall writes, directs and stars in this "fascinating" (Roger Ebert) tale of dancing, deception and deadly passion on the sizzling streets of Argentina. Starring Ruben Blades, Kathy Baker and Luciana Pedraza, Assassination Tango is "part gritty crime thriller, part dance-driven romance, part evocative character study" (The Hollywood Reporter). Veteran hit man John J. (Duvall) has just received the toughest assignment of his career: Travel to Buenos Aires, take down a corrupt general and be back in America in less than three days. But when the hit is unexpectedly delayed, John finds himself prowling the city's intoxicating tango clubs only to be seduced by a sultry dancer (Pedraza), tempted by the tango and betrayed by a lethal conspiracy. *1983: Actor, Tender Mercies

1 out of 5 stars Ridiculous.......2007-06-15

Because I have a grandson in BA, I like to watch anything Argentine. This movie is ridiculous. Not only is the storytelling poor, the plot absurd, the accents, the portrayal of Portenos, the caricature of The Tango are ridiculous. Unless you are interested in a few frames of BA neighborhood footage (as I am), PASS.

3 out of 5 stars Buy it for tango, not plot.......2006-11-05

The tango scenes were worth it. The plot dragged.

5 out of 5 stars Pedraza Alone Worth The Price Of The DVD.......2006-04-16

I took a shot at buying this DVD sight-unseen, something I rarely do and usually regret, but not in this case. I found it even more fascinating than I hoped, thanks to a totally-unknown actress. Two viewings within a year has not changed my opinion.
This movie is just different, a unique portrait of strange older hit-man and the people in his life. I am not surprised a number of viewers did not like this film, even fans of Robert Duvall. It's probably just too quirky for most tastes and too slow for most viewers. Despite being low- key, there are some moments of intense temper and violence on the part of Duvall which helps keep ones attention.
I didn't need that, however, to keep my attention. Just trying to figure out Duvall kept me intrigued. My attention, however, accelerated when newcomer Luciana Pedraza entered the picture.

Pedraza is one of the most interesting "new faces" I've seen on film: a woman who has intelligence written over her face as few modern actresses ever have. This woman has a lot to offer: looks, intelligence, a good figure, a great dancer, wonderful voice and despite being Argentine, speaks better English than many Americans. A pity that to my knowledge, this is still her only screen appearance.
Between her and Duvall - who are both complex characters to say the least - along with some wonderfully-colorful cinematography, great dance scenes and intrigue about how an assassination plot will turn out,

I found this film and the DVD - which is inexpensive - very pleasing. This is unknown film that isn't fully appreciated.

5 out of 5 stars A journey to tango `s antipodes!.......2005-06-27

Robert Duvall has made a solvent work with this picture whose commercial hook would seem another additional thriller. This motive is just a pretext, a real invitation to that magic and mysterious tour: tango's world.

The erotic cadences, the sublime movements, the powerful expressiveness, love and hate: a way of living through a musical genre, plenty of anecdotes and sinister fascination. The tango is memory and passion, the perfect combination of light and shadow. The fusion of the couple, wild and captivating, hard to evade and easy to engage us.

The plot will follow the classic style: Duvall is a hired mercenary. He will be sent from New York to Buenos Aires to pay a painful debt. But the fascinating portrait made by Duvall is unique, very personal and warmth, through smart dialogues and a very well assembled script , that will capture your interest.

There are certain edition problems and unnecessary concessions, that avoid to know a little more about this retired General; may be a flash back would have been enough; and that is why I guess this was not the main intention of Duvall; he wants to focus about the tango, and the crime won't be but the frame of the dramatis personae.

He is a beloved father behind his job. And the cast is fine; a human portrait and an invitation to enjoy this art dance.

4 out of 5 stars Looking for info on some music from this movie........2005-02-18

Hi people!
I liked this movie, but more as "pinceladas", brushstrokes of buenos aires and tango, rather than as a movie itself. I enjoyed plenty the dialogues but I see it as a documentary, and I do not worry about the plot.

I actually wanted to leave this review to see if someone can help me figure out what is the choral piece, with children voices that comes when he goes to the elementary school looking for her, where she is shooting a commercial.

I am DYING to understand what it is. I am from Argentina and I cannot recognize what they are saying, but I think it is Latin, I think they are saying "ora pro nobis" (pray for us) is part of the MASS, but I don't remember which one!
I read over and over the music list at the end of the credits and I do not think is there!

PLEASE HELP! I am HAUNTED by it!
Thanks!

Another action flick from an unlikely source (wildly inconsistent Russian director Andrei Konchalovsky), buddy movie Tango & Cash teams Sly Stallone and Kurt Russell as bullet-dodging cops who get on each others' nerves while uniting against a slimy French drug kingpin (Jack Palance). Violent, profane, and packed with implausibilities, this is one of those big-budget, stunt-laden affairs that gets by on the charisma of its stars, and they almost pull it off. Tango & Cash was Stallone's first attempt to share the spotlight with another hero, and he's casually laid-back in his change-of-pace role (well, OK, it's not that change-of-pace), while Russell is equally enjoyable as Sly's well-coifed sidekick. Ridiculous all the way, this one is entertaining if only as a virtual catalog of action-movie clichés.--Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars Really depressing for Russian cinema fans...........2007-03-10

This film is actually directed by Andrei Konchalovsky, the man who co-wrote the magisterial film Andrei Rublev, one of ANDREI TARKOVSKY's greatest films. It's hard to believe this man went from writing with one of the greatest Russian directors of all time to directing a B-movie with Stallone and Russell, but there you have it. How depressing.....

3 out of 5 stars Nothing Special, but definitely a Lot of Fun.......2007-01-14

Tango and Cash is another one of those American buddy movies from the 80's. It is nothing original but so much fun. This time, Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell, two cool guys team up as Tango and Cash to give good entertainment on a boring saturday night.

So what do you get when buying this dvd? Two muscular fellows who give funny oneliners and shoot up a lot of bad guys. Big guns, big cars, big explosions, this film has it all. Sylvester Stallone acts good and gives a nice performance as the good cop Ray Tango. I can now see why he was the first one considered to play Axel Foley in "Beverly Hills Cop".
Kurt Russell plays Gabrielle Cash, the tough, bigmouthed cop who is the almost opposite of Tango. He is funny and just as cool as Stallone.
Also in the mix is a sexy young Teri Hatcher playing Tango's sister. This was one of her first big films and she stays firmly on her feet next to Stallone and Russell.

The story is simple, but nice: Tango and cash are two rival cops who are the absolute best. They solve one crime right after the other. Now you can understand that the criminals aren't very happy with that, so: they set the two cops up. Now, Tango and Cash are put into jail for a crime they didn't commit. They can't stand each other, but they have to work together trying to escape out of the jail and finding the ones responisble for setting them up.

So nothing original or special, but who cares? It entertains perfectly. Expect having a fun time seeying two of the coolest actors of the 80's, Stallone and Russell, team up as Tango and Cash, fighting bad guys with big guns and nice oneliners.
Good popcorn fun.

2 out of 5 stars Honestly, pretty hard to watch -- and I typically like cop movies.......2006-08-15

I'm surprised by all the favorable reviews. I typically like "buddy movies," "cop movies," and action thrillers -- even when the plot runs out midway through the flick. This, though, was so goofy (Stallone's lines were wooden, all the characters were patently cliche, etc.) that I found myself skipping through chapters because my gut hurt watching various scenes. There's a scene where (yet again) Kurt Russell dresses in drag; there's a ridiculous scene in a prison where countless inmates were able to get out of their cells and meet the stars in a Batman-esque laundry room to do battle; once the stars escape from prison, they freely walk around town talking and meeting with people (despite the fact that they previously were high-profile cops who everyone in the city presumably would recognize); Jack Palance (one of my favorites) barks out nothing more than expected tough-guy lines while kissing mice and putting them in a maze (like some diabolical James Bond plot); and, speaking of James Bond, there's a ridiculous sequence where the stars visit a goofy "Q-type" who gives them a GMC Jimmy with a gatling gun welded on the side -- as though that's supposed to "wow" us in this day & age. All in all, while I'll confess to owning more than my share of Sly Stallone & Kurt Russell movies, this one was absolutely awful -- even when treated like a Saturday matinee when the rest of the family is gone and you're laying on the couch with nothing better to do. A far cry from any of the Lethal Weapon movies....

4 out of 5 stars "He thinks he's Rambo...".......2006-04-28

Tango & Cash brings to the screen the story of two top police officers that find themselves framed by the villain they're trying to catch.
Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell, Teri Hatcher (!) and the rest of the cast carry out their performances very well, allowing for a highly entertaining movie.
In short, the plot, the setting, the special effects, and the music are all very good (keep in mind though, the film has 80's written all over it).
Overall, though not a masterpiece, it is definitely a movie worth watching, as it will surely provide for an evening's entertainment!
