Based on Terry McMillan's best-selling novel, How Stella Got Her Groove Back stars Angela Bassett as a 40-year-old, Manhattan stock trader and single mom whose static life gets a jolt during a vacation with her pal (Whoopi Goldberg) in Jamaica. Sparks fly when Bassett meets a 20-year-old stud (Taye Diggs) who has an ambivalent career path but a great body and lots of sexual energy to burn. After some prodding by Goldberg's warm-funny secondary character, Bassett gets it on with the fellow--and proceeds to worry about what she's doing with a man half her age. The film is most enjoyable in its sunny, exotic early scenes and becomes more formulaic once the unlikely couple transports their will-we-stay-together-or-won't-we tensions back to the Big Apple. But director Kevin Rodney Sullivan goes out of his way to make a movie unabashedly thick with fantasy and wish-fulfillment for female audiences (it's Diggs who reveals a lot more flesh than the regal Bassett). This is a Saturday-night movie all around. --Tom Keogh

Great Relaxful Movie.......2007-06-24
I LUV this movie. The beach is my favorite place and when I watch this it takes me back there. It is a good relaxful movie. The only part I don't like is when her best friend dies. That part I fast forward. I really don't see what they couldn't have left it out. It would have been a great movie without it. All in all it is a good movie. Some really funny parts :)
Great Movie!.......2007-06-15
Great Movie! I am glad to have it as part of my collection.
Delightful.......2006-11-05
Sweet, funny and a romantic movie. You can fall in love and start a new at any age. Life doesn't end when you turn forty.
Wasn't what I expected..........2006-08-02
This film was not what I expected. It was so plain. I was about ready to turn it off.
Others may like it though.
Boring, uninteresting, and dreadful that's what one reviewer is saying..........2006-01-22
As much as Angela Bassett, Whoopi Goldberg and Taye Diggs work together as a great cast, this film is boring, which they can't help because they're all wonderful actresses and actors, but the plot is just dull and boring.
The movie begins with a successful stockbroker in San Francisco, who decides from the urging of her best friend, "Delilah," played by Whoopi Goldberg, that she needs a long-awaited vacation. So, while watching tv, she sees a commercial advertising travel to Jamaica, so "Stella," played by Angela Bassett decides that as much as she deserves a vacation, finally succumbs to her best-friend's suggestion and flies down there and meets her best friend, "Deliliah."
The basic premise is a 40 year old woman falls in love with a much younger man, (old enough to be her son, no less) whose only 20. The 20 year old is named Winston Shakespeare, a native Jamaican, who decides to date "Stella."
At first, "Stella" (Angela Bassett) decides that dating a 20 year old man is robbing the cradle, but going against her better judgment, decides she'll throw caution to wind and date "Winston."
From the beginning of the film to the end the plot is boring, dull and uninteresting.
The characters like the plot are basic and boring. There's no real drama such as a hurricane taking place, or anything of that nature. While, the actors and actresses are talented not even their great acting abilities and personalities could save this film from being a complete failure, in my humble and honest opinion.
To recite a classic cliche, "Not even the best popcorn can save this film" and it's because of this that I give the film the lowest rating possiblg of only 1 star, which is extremely unusual for me because I almost always give films a 5-star rating because I enjoy so many movies, but this film just wasn't worth anything more than 1-star.
Bottome line; You're much better off renting or buying another film.

Excellent Movies.......2004-06-24
GREAT movies. All three are very entertaining and uplifting. I can watch them over and over again and never get tired of them. They are all about LOVE, FAMILY & FRIENDSHIP.
Wonderful.......2003-07-15
These movies are great! The thing i like the most about them is that you can watch them over and over and not get tired. If you don't have this package you should get it but i will warn you they will be more enjoyable for women.

Brown Sugar: One of 2002's most underrated films, Brown Sugar offers more than you'd expect from a conventional romantic comedy. The love story between Dre (Taye Diggs) and Sidney (Sanaa Lathan) is the least interesting part of the movie; the costars have delightful chemistry, but their hookup is a given. What's refreshing is the way the story draws a parallel between Dre and Sidney's longtime friendship (they meet as kids in a 1984 flashback) and the evolution of hip-hop music from urban roots to dubious mainstream acceptance. Dre's a disillusioned producer at pop-fueled Millennium Records, married to a beauty (Nicole Ari Parker) who cheats while embracing her coveted status quo. Editor of an influential music magazine, Sidney's tentatively engaged to a basketball star (Boris Kodjoe), but these loves are obstacles, and Dre and Sidney are meant for each other. In bringing them together, Brown Sugar allows for human mistakes, intelligent solutions, and the kind of three-dimensional behavior that romantic comedies typically don't provide. --Jeff Shannon
How Stella Got Her Groove Back: Based on Terry McMillan's best-selling novel, How Stella Got Her Groove Back stars Angela Bassett as a 40-year-old, Manhattan stock trader and single mom whose static life gets a jolt during a vacation with her pal (Whoopi Goldberg) in Jamaica. --Tom Keogh
Waiting to Exhale: Based on a novel by Terry McMillan, this weepy melodrama about four African American women and the men who wronged them became an instant cultural phenomenon when it was released back in 1995. It's easy to see why Exhale struck a nerve: the movie boasts an attractive cast of African American actresses and personalities, including Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, and Lela Rochon. Unfortunately, though, Exhale sags under the weight of its soapy, crisis of the week plotting and relentlessly cheery "you go, girl!" optimism. And African American men, cast here as insensitive lovers and pigheaded materialists, get the very short end of the feminist stick. Perhaps moviegoers were simply responding to the brilliant soundtrack by R&B superstar Babyface, who provided the movie's only real groove. --Ethan Brown

Customer Reviews:

Description
The recent trend in the media has been criticism of the Dole campaign. The campaign is being called "The Big Funk" by some. Tonight, Stuart Stevens, media advisor to Senator Dole, defends the candidate against charges that the campaign has stalled. Then, author Terry McMillan's book, Waiting to Exhale, and the movie that followed were major successes among African American women and the country at large. Her latest book is called How Stella Got Her Groove Back and it explores what happens when a woman finds love with a man half her age. Also, while writing film criticism for Rolling Stone, Movie Line, and The Washington Post Joe Queenan decided to make a movie for $6,998. He chronicles the ordeal of making a low budget, independent film in his book, The Unkindest Cut: How a hatchet man critic made his own $7,000 movie and put it all on his credit card. Finally, Rob Weisbach is a 30 year old editor at William Morrow and his clients include Jerry Seinfeld, Paul Reiser and Ellen DeGeneres. He talks to Charlie about his success in the publishing world.
