Editorial Review:
Amazon.com
Iris teems with fussy charm and the intimate joy found only in a lover's foibles. Adapted from the memoirs of literary critic John Bayley, the film recounts his courtship of and long marriage to British novelist Iris Murdoch. The scenario tacks back and forth from the young Iris (Kate Winslet)--ready to seduce one and all with her coy command of words and sex appeal--to the elder Iris (Judi Dench)--slowly giving way to the cruel erasure of Alzheimer's--and it is impossible not to be moved by the film's denouement of loss. Ms. Dench is, as usual, resplendent, tossing off literary quips, knowing glares, and razor-sharp metaphors with graceful ease. The pleasure Murdoch took in what must have been an extraordinary life is palpable every second Dench is onscreen. Jim Broadbent is also especially fine as the elder Bayley, steadfast in devotion and humor. The script, however, is painfully predictable and heavy-handed in its frequent use of symbolism (e.g., sheets of paper flying into the ocean, rocks slipping to the river's bottom). Nevertheless, Iris evokes a passion for learning and intimacy worthy of its subject. --Fionn Meade

Disney's 1986 Flight of the Navigator combines a strong ensemble cast and classic '80s soundtrack with dazzling special effects for a high-flying sci-fi adventure. While searching for his little brother in the woods, 12-year-old David Freeman (Joey Cramer) falls down a ravine and is knocked unconscious. After what seems like minutes, he returns home, only to discover that eight years have passed since he was declared missing and presumed dead. Even more mystifying is that David hasn't aged, nor can he account for the time lapse. Meanwhile, NASA officials stumble upon a futuristic spacecraft and are determined to assess what David knows about it by locking him in a top-secret lab for scanning and testing. His only chance of escape is in the spacecraft manned by Max, a wisecracking robot. Cramer gives an earnest performance, which overcomes an imperfect script, while enough one-liners and imaginative animation will keep families engaged. Watch for Sarah Jessica Parker in one of her first film appearances. Rated PG for language. (Ages 6 and older) --Lynn Gibson

back to the future back in the day!.......2007-06-18
This is definetly a classic!! I showed my kids this & that became an instant movie to watch!
A wonderful classic.......2007-05-08
I love reminiscing about watching and enjoying this movie as a child. Viewing it now, I find a different and delightful humor that I hadn't conceived in my early years. Great fun for the whole family.
Quality Family Viewing.......2007-05-08
I recently bought this video to watch with my 5 year old son and he loved it. I remembered enjoying it when it came out, and my memories did not disappoint me. The story-line is rather simple, which make it fairly easy for children to follow, but remain interesting enough for adults to enjoy as well. Like the plot, the graphics and special effects won't bowl you over but are done well enough to tell the story. A great addition to the colection of young sc-fi lovers.
Flight of the Navigator.......2007-04-10
I have been looking for this movie for awhile and i am so glad to been able to purchase it. Wonderful family movie.
Remembering My Childhood.......2007-03-29
I grew up on "Flight of the Navigator." I wanted my own children to see it, but our local video store did not have it for rent. Amazon always has what I am looking for, so I ordered a copy. My kids absolutely love it! I recommend it for anyone looking for a good, clean, family film that everyone will enjoy. Thank you Amazon!

Elvis Presley's seventh film was the first of his "Hawaii trilogy" (including Girls! Girls! Girls! and Paradise, Hawaiian Style). While its story is daft--the King has just been released from his Army posting in Italy and returned to the islands, where he's trying to avoid working in his father's fruit business--the music is not: "Blue Hawaii," "Almost Always True," and the beautiful "Can't Help Falling in Love." Angela Lansbury plays Elvis's mother, who can't seem to get through to him. Directed by the star's frequent collaborator, Norman Taurog (G.I. Blues). --Tom Keogh

Bill Bixby plays a 19th-century gambler who inherits responsibility for three orphans, but the kids in turn have something of value: a huge gold nugget. This Disney film from 1975 is an enjoyable potboiler with its sentimentality under control and the accent on laughs, most of which are provided, not unexpectedly, by Tim Conway and Don Knotts as thieves who want to get their hands on the treasure. An easy, safe film for children. You can't go wrong with this. --Tom Keogh
Description
Head for cover! Don Knotts and Tim Conway are Wild West outlaws who can't hit the broad side of a barn -- but never miss when it comes to rounding up laughs! The hilarity begins when a roving bachelor (Bill Bixby) inherits three young orphans and a wealth of problems. When the youngsters stumble upon a huge golden nugget, they must fend off the greedy townspeople. So the kids join forces with the bumbling outlaws to stage a robbery of the gold. Little do they know a surly gang of sharpshooters plans to beat them to the draw! If you're aiming for fun, saddle up and head out with THE APPLE DUMPLING GANG!
Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2007-07-05
This DVD was poor quality, and you could not really enjoy the movie, good movie, just poor quality, plus I thought it would have more of Tim and Don in it.
Excellant.......2007-05-07
If you are looking for a clean funny movie without sex, violence, and cursing this is the right movie. It is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Very family orient and I recommend it to anyone.
First they blew into town, then they BLEW it up!.......2007-03-22
Excellent family comedy! Don Knotts & Tim Conway are at their best!
Three orphaned siblings are forced upon confirmed bachelor Russel Donovan(Bixby) in a 19nth century boom town of Quake City, California. After an earthquake shakes the area, the children find a large gold nugget worth tens of thousands of dollars. But their newfound wealth is causing more problems than it's solving, so they decide to "give" the gold to 2 bumbling outlaws, Theodore & Amos (Knotts&Conway). But the only way they can get the gold is to steal it from the bank vault where it's being held for safekeeping.
Quotes:
(Amos makes Theodore angry)
Theodore: You couldn't see through a barbed wire fence!
Amos: Theodore?
Theodore: That head of yours couldn't hold straw!
Amos: Theodore?
Theodore: You couldn't sell hacksaws in a jail!
-----------------
Amos: How much money do you figure that dudes got in front of him?
Theodore: About five hundred.
Amos: Five hundred? WOW! You know, that'll be, uh, that's two hundred apiece!
APPLE DUMPLING GANG.......2007-02-10
THIS WAS A VERY GOOD FILM. WE REALLY LIKE DON KNOTTS AND TIM CONWAY.
WISH THERE WERE MORE GOOD CLEAN MOVIES TO WATCH.
Another Great Walt Disney Picture.......2007-02-01
When I do a movie review I base it on what I think of the movie and not anyone else. This picture was made back in 1975 and is another great Walt Disney picture. Bill Bixby plays the role of Russel Donovan, Tim Conway plays the role of Gangster Amos Tucker, Don Knotts plays the role of Gangster Theodore Ogelvie, and Harry Morgan plays the role of Sheriff Homer McCoy. Donovan comes to town looking for a poker game while on his way to New Orleans. Donovan is approach by an old friend and wants him to claim what's on the stage that belongs to him. Donovan agrees only to fine that he's reasonable for three little kids. According to the local sheriff Donovan has to attend to these three little kids. After an earthquake shakes the area, the children find a large gold nugget worth tens of thousands of dollars. But their newfound wealth is causing more problems than it's solving, so they agree to "give" the gold to two bumbling outlaws (Knotts & Conway). But they only way they can get the gold are to steal it from the bank vault where it's being held for safe keeping.

When a slightly cross-eyed Siamese cat named D.C. (Darn Cat) turns up with a wristwatch around his neck instead of a collar, it could be just the clue the FBI needs to crack a series of bank robberies in this lightweight comedy from Disney. The watch belongs to a bank teller who has been taken hostage. Dean Jones stars as the good-hearted FBI agent assigned to the case. Unfortunately, he is highly allergic to, you guessed it, cats. Hayley Mills is D.C.'s doting owner who hatches a hair-brained scheme to follow D.C.'s every move until he returns to the crooks' hideout where he got the wristwatch. After a lot of sneezing, slapstick, and comedic intrigue, the bank robbers are foiled, the hostage is safe, and everyone is happy. An impressive supporting cast of Frank Gorshin, Elsa Lanchester, Roddy McDowall, and Ed Wynn add to the zaniness. Released in 1965 (and remade in 1997), it is understandably dated, but the performances are fun nonetheless. Hayley Mills is delightful as the determined and unflappable wannabe sleuth, and Dean Jones proves he is adept at physical comedy. This is a movie of little consequence, just a clean, fun diversion that the whole family can watch. The theme song is sung by Bobby Darin. --Peggy Maltby-Etra
Description
The fur flies when a smart Siamese cat goes undercover and Hayley Mills and Dean Jones team up for mystery, adventure, and wild comedy on Disney DVD. When the irrepressible and always hungry D.C. (Darn Cat) turns up with a wristwatch for a collar, it becomes a tip-off to an unsolved robbery and kidnapping. You don't know who's tailing who as nosy neighbors, jealous boyfriends, and a highly allergic FBI agent play a game of cat and mouse to crack the baffling case. Don't miss the spectacular supporting cast featuring Dorothy Provine, Roddy McDowall, Frank Gorshin, and Ed Wynn, plus 100 purr-cent feline family fun!
Customer Reviews:
Darn That Cat!.......2007-05-07
I'd been holding out on this title for a widescreen version of the film...which this is not. I am a widescreen snob like so many others but I just could not hold out any more. We have a 42" plasma TV and I'll tell you, the film did not look all that bad. It is stretched but, it doesn't look terrible. I'd prefer a lovely remastered anamorphic widescreen version but, in lieu of not knowing if that will ever happen....this will certainly do.
The movie is a little slow in parts but is a Disney classic. No child of the late 60's or 70's who grew up with Disney live-action movies could deny that this is one for the collection.
That Darn Cat! does deserve a special edition.
Why, oh WHY is this FULL SCREEN???.......2007-04-17
The movie is a delightful romp, with a cast of wonderfully talented actors. This was one of those transition films for Haley Mills, between childhood and adult. Dean Jones was great, and the supporting characters are just that - characters.
HOWEVER: This film was released to theaters in 1965, at a high point in the Disney studio history. It was shot in WIDESCREEN. Why is it now only available on DVD in full screen???
This is a FIVE STAR movie. I give it four stars, subtracting one for the full screen DVD format.
That Darn Cat.......2007-02-09
Still a favorite after all of these years! Cute and charming, with plenty of laughs. Even my "cool" pre-teen boys really enjoyed it.
My All-Time Favorite Comedy.......2006-12-19
This is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Yet, it is funny without being too silly. Dean Jones was excellent playing what is basically a straight man's role, with some of the other characters (including the cat) being the comedic stars.
The villains are very effective. You can tell from the beginning of the movie we are not dealing with typical comedy villains. One of them, played by Frank Gorshin (a year before he showed up as the Riddler in the Batman TV series). It creates the tension of a woman whose life is in danger, which is the set up for the story.
One of my all-time favorite scenes is where D. C. (for "Darn Cat") is playing with a butterfly in front of a drive thru movie camera. I find it funny . . . but then, I can picture a cat doing that.
This is a timeless comedy classic, and I highly recommend it for a good laugh. U also feel it is safe for children of all ages, though I always recommend parental involvement with any movie or TV series a child watches.
Super movie for cat lovers.......2006-11-24
DC is great, the neighbors are very nosey, wonderful family movie.

Hauntingly beautiful folk music and stunning Appalachian scenery take center stage in this winner of the 2000 Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Prize for outstanding ensemble performance. Musicologist Dr. Lily Penleric has a deep love of English folk ballads. After a humiliating failure to make full professor, she heads off to visit her sister's tiny school in rural Appalachia and finds herself in folk music central. Lily is entranced, but the locals are suspicious of the outlander's motivations. Issues of tolerance, clashing cultures, and Big Bad Men abound, but Songcatcher wisely focuses on the music. Janet McTeer does fine with the "repressed academic gets in touch with the earth" role, but her truly outstanding work is in revealing scholar Lily's rapture in her discoveries. McTeer leads a truly great cast, including the wonderful Pat Carroll, and a just-for-the-hell-of-it cameo by bluesman Taj Mahal. Songcatcher has a healthy respect for the mountain people it portrays, and an absolute reverence for their music. --Ali Davis
Description
When musicologist Doctor Lily Penleric (Janet McTeer) is passed over for a prominent teaching position, she leaves the city to visit her sister in the beautifully rugged mountains of Appalachia. It is here she discovers a wellspring of emotional tunes passed down from the original Irish and Scottish immigrants who settled in these parts. Determined to document the history of the songs, she immerses herself in mountain life, falls in love with a local musician, Aidan Quinn, and is profoundly changed by the generosity, strength, and freedom of the fiercely proud mountain people.

Disturbingly Lesbian Film.......2007-07-02
Yes, what looks like a great family film is actually a disturbing vehicle to promote lesbian values. I was so disgusted by the lesbianism and partial nudity that I didn't even finish it. YYUUUUCCKKK!!!!
Breathtakingly Honest .......2007-05-13
Here is a look at the North Carolina Mountain Culture at the turn of the 19th century through the eyes of a rennisance woman with a PhD. in music. It is so much more than the story it tells. It reminds us of our roots and shows us the heartache of ignorance. There are several remarkable characters throughout the movie.I would urge all lovers of the land and life to see this piece that slipped through the cracks at oscar time. The performances are excellent, and it is the first time we see and hear the work of Emi Rossum. Get the sound track also. You will love this one. I wore out my first copy. This review is from my second. I'm not sharing more of the story because it is groundbreaking and I want your experience to be organic. That alone will do justice to this labor of concientious love and integrity.
An All-Time Favorite!.......2007-02-25
Just on the basis of the soundtrack and musical performances alone, this is a great movie. Then add in the historical information about early Applachian Mountain culture, an entertaining and absorbing storyline, and excellent acting, and you have magic. Really, really good!
Catch a style of song .......2007-02-23
The story in this movie is a really good one; a female professor in the early 1900's (I believe) who stumbles upon a unique style of music in the backwoods of the Appalachian mountains. She decides study and documentation of this musical genre will warrant her advancement in the university's music department and launches in to her study with great gusto.
The main character transforms in this movie and her transformation is truly believeable. Not everything about this movie is believeable yet the movie is very worthwhile viewing. The storyline is good and the music is fantastic. Not all of the progression of scenes/story makes for a believeable plot but again, the movie is very worthwhile for the music itself.
Why? What's the point?.......2007-02-16
There are enough reviews of the main movie story so I don't need to add anything in that regard. But, what on earth does a lesbian sub-story (in both regards) have to do with the story as a whole? Nothing. So, we have another movie that would be great to introduce the whole family to blue-grass music and the Appalachian way of life that, instead, heads for the trash bin.

MR. MOTO bad follow-up........2007-06-16
I purchased Volume One of the MR. MOTO series from Fox, and was delighted with the entire package. The restoration of these films is perfect, and for 1930s' programmers, they are surprisingly exciting, with fine production values.
That said, Volume Two gives us the poorest MR. MOTO features, weak scripts, inept comedy relief. Several of these films need "dramatic relief" from the comedy. It was not WW II that stopped this series;
it was the dwindling quality of the films. Save your money.
Mr. Moto's last Warning.......2007-06-14
This is the epitomy of the Mr. Moto films and is an outstanding example from this series of films. Mr. Moto is traveling by ship to the northern Suez port and is killed early in the film shortly after docking. There is a ring of spies and sabotuers that plan to scuttle the French Fleet at the mouth of the canal to stop all marine passage. Moto wears disquises to remain unknown, and yet mixes in well with the enemy agents to learn what they plan. Comic relief comes from several Brits: the Port Commander, and a self centered traveler who has no common sense. People are killed left and right until Moto swings into action and dispatches the entire band of spys. He takes no prisoners and while his methods seem a bit extreme by today's standards, he eliminates the need for a public trial for these patently unscrupulous men.
This is the movie that pulls together all the parts of earlier films and provides a great adventure of non-stop thrills.
I found it a bit period in nature, but completely satisfying in its means of resolving a weighty problem, including coming back from the dead.

Magnificent Moto.......2007-04-10
Both collections 1 and 2 are fun filled evenings. Invite a few friends over and have a Moto party. MUCH better than a super bowl party - Moto is entertaining and even a bit cheesy-campy - not hormonal on screen or off.
Excellent Adventure/Detective Series.......2007-03-29
The Mr. Moto series is an excellent group of adventure/detective movies. Peter Lorre's characterization as Mr. Moto and a fine supporting cast elevates these movies above the usual "B" detective movies.
The restoration of these films by Twentieth Century Fox is excellent. The picture quality of this set(and its companion set) are far superior to the public domain versions of these films.
Please consider two (2) other related purchases (not to mention to other volume of Mr. Moto films) to become an expert fan of Mr. Moto and Peter Lorre. Howard Berlin has written a concise and well-organized overview of the Mr. Moto series, The Complete Mr. Moto Phile: A Casebook. This softcover book is available for approximately $[...] from Amazon.com. Stephen Youngkin has written a book on Peter Lorre, The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre. Youngkin's book is one of the most comprehensive and best researched biographes of a Hollywood star - it is a a treasure trove of information about Peter Lorre. This hardcover book is available for approximately [...]from Amazon.com. I gained a greater appreciation for Peter Lorre's acting talents in the Mr. Moto series after I read both of these books. Please review the Amazon.com reviews for these books!
The Complete Mr. Moto Film Phile: A Casebook
The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre
Mr. Moto - Vol 2.......2007-03-29
Thank you 20th Century Fox for realizing that those old classic B movies are loved and worth restoring.
The prints of these films are marvelously clear and complete. It is easy to see why Mr. Moto was so popular in the late 1930's. The stories are light-weight, but it is obvious that the producers and directors worked hard to make them look good. Like the Charlie Chan series, Mr. Moto films are filled with the great character actors we all recognize. In these 4 films we see Maxie Rosenblum, Dick Lane, Leon Ames, Recardo Cortez, John Carradine, George Sanders, Lionel Atwell and a truly fun performance by J. Carrol Nash as a particularly nasty Indian henchman.
The stories are full of spies and murderers who succumb to the efforts of the tenacious Mr. Moto. Of course there is always a scene where he gets to display his mastery of Ju-Jitsu. With Mr. Moto, crime is both a physical and mental sport.
In addition each film has featurettes which gives insights into the Mr. Moto character and films. Especially interesting was "Mr. Moto meets Mr. Chan, the making of Mr. Moto's Gamble."

A RETURN TO NORMALCY.......2007-06-08
HAVING SEEN ALL OF THE ROAD MOVIES IN YEARS PAST, IT IS A GREAT PLEASURE ONCE AGAIN TO HEAR WONDERFUL VOICES, & COMEDIC ACTING AT SUCH A HIGH LEVEL. MUSIC & COMEDY DOES NOT HAVE TO BE VULGAR TO BE ENTERTAINING. WHERE HAVE YOU GONE BING CROSBY?
So Happy.......2007-04-27
I looked for the Road To movies a few years back with no luck. I checked back recently, and was pleased to find this collection of the first four- and, arguably, the best four- films in the series. The package is nice, and the movies are on one double-sided DVD, which is a nice change from the unnecessarily disc-heavy sets we see so often. The transfer of the movies isn't perfect, but they're old, and it's still fantastic in both sound and picture. All four movies are wonderful, though Road To Singapore is a bit slow in coming off the ground. Hope and Crosby are revered as one of the best comedy duos of all time, and this set proves why. I'm young, and I love these movies. They're great fun for all ages, and I highly recommend getting them. Especially for that price!
On the Road..........2007-03-10
Including four of the seven films in the series, "On the Road with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby" is a collection that I'm proud to own. The Bob Hope and Bing Crosby "Road" movies are a set of classic comedy musicals that are pointless but funny! This can only be appreciated by someone who understands the relationship between Hope and Crosby and the jokes that apply to the era. A great collection for the Hope, Crosby, or Lamour fan.
Enjoyable!.......2007-01-12
Couldn't wait to get this DVD and it was worth the wait. Got a charge out of seeing Bob and Bing together. Must order the other "Road" films.
road to comedy with bob and bing.......2007-01-10
a bargain collection of their best (save "Rio which should have been packaged with it - perhaps MCA-Universal did not have the rights).
Enjoy - nothing else needs to be said!

Bleak as its South Central Los Angeles setting, Harsh Times is like a suicidal vortex swallowing men who ought to know better but can't stop their self-destruction. Christian Bale stars as Jim Davis, a stressed-out, former Army Ranger who becomes a very bad influence on his weak-willed buddy, Mike Alvarez (Freddy Rodriguez of Six Feet Under). Together the two meander through streets at night, getting drunk and stoned, finding trouble for its own sake and inviting danger as a ritual of machismo bonding. Mike's wife, Sylvia (Eva Longoria), a lawyer whom Mike, working as a telemarketer, put through school, is repelled by Jim and watches in pain as her spouse chooses a downward spiral over renewal and redemption with her. When Jim's application to join the L.A. police is turned down, he leads Mike into pure anarchy. An impractical change of fortune doesn't help any, and first-time director David Ayer, who wrote the screenplay for Harsh Times years before his script for Training Day, goes to some lengths, dramatically and visually, to convey Jim's unhinged condition. The dreariness of it all, and a sense that Bale has constructed--but not exactly lived in--another in his gallery of lost, misfit souls, makes it hard to connect with this film. Still, it is hard to turn away from these desperate and dangerous characters. --Tom Keogh
Description
(Action) Bale stars as an ex-Army Ranger who finds himself slipping back into his old life of petty crime and booze after a job offer from the LAPD evaporates. Honorable discharged, Homeland Security wants to recruit him for some special ops in Central America, but first he has to pass a urine test...which proves difficult. Film directorial debut for Ayer who has written such box office hits as TRAINING DAY, U-571 and THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS
Customer Reviews:
Ayer film hits hard but misses necessary emphasis.......2007-06-25
Following Christian Bales acting career is like watching an Olympic swimmer, pushing the boundaries, pushing the improbable to finally win the gold medal to then come back after fours years and do it all again, breaking world records performing like a new star. There seems there's nothing this actor will not attempt to do to push his talent and skill in terms of submerging himself into a character. Whether his performance as the yuppie killer in American Psycho or the emaciated empty headed somnambulist in The Machinist or even the serious caped crusader in the excellent Batman Begins all characters hit the mark, all believable, all extremely well done.
In this realistic drama, he portrays a post traumatic psychotic returned from a tour of duty from somewhere in the Middle East. Bale as Jim Davis does a believable performance, however, does not gain the sympathy (so required in a role like this) from the audience. Something is missing but what exactly is missing?
Freddy Rodriguez, Six Feet Under as Mike Alonzo does a fair job as the irresponsible old buddy badly influenced by Jim Davis's pleas to party and make trouble when Freddy should be looking for a job. Their repartee in Davis's car is realistic and sadly true of two old friends holding on to their respective past, and refusing to grow up. Despite the fact that the two characters are in their late twenties, the dialogue is distinctly adolescent as their drunken and pot fuelled antics while driving the streets of South Central L.A. all too often reveal.
The beautiful Eva Longeria Desperate Housewives plays Alonzo's lawyer wife, gently pushing the boy like a concerned and nagging mother to get a job. Similar to a confused teenager, to cover the fact that he's drinking with Davis, has his friends telephone his home and leave messages as potential employers. He gets caught to then act like a guilty fourteen year old as his beautiful wife kicks him out of the house - loser realism at its most pathetic.
The film begins to change as the two boy's finally land jobs. Although for the psychotic recent war Vet, Jim Davis, his behaviour turns bad, his psychotic breaks more out of control, and the entire fate of these characters and the film now heads on a downward rollercoaster to hell.
Apart from the fact that these druggy antics and violent behaviours from Jim Davis went on far too long throughout the film, Bale never shows us something in the character we can sympathize with...the character is insane to begin with and he just goes more insane as the film progresses. Because the boy is a Vet and most likely a war hero in the traditional sense, like Vietnam, society will not let him back into `normality' because trained killers, soldiers who return from action, are more often damaged goods.
This is the message of the film: Western governments send our boys to war and expect them to do their duty and kill the enemy. But the support they so direly need when returning from the hell of war, attempting to fit back in to society is forgotten. That is why some soldiers continue going back for extra tours, because that's all they know and can do.
Harsh Times is a realistic film, well acted but missed one aspect so necessary in a story of this kind, creating sympathy for the main character. We get the point but as the character is too far gone, we'd rather not look at it or... care.
Harsh Times.......2007-06-19
My Oppinion: Harsh Times is a very good drama, but has a lousy story and is kinda boring. Christian Bale does an outstanding performance and so does Freddy Rodriguze.
About The Film: Harsh Tims is about Jim an ex-army ranger who comes back home reunits with his bst friend Mike and applies for the LAPD. When The LAPD rejects him he goes into a vilont act and petty crimeand he drags his weak-milled friend mike with him. Mikes wife sees what jim is doing to her husband and pushes mike to get a job and all Jim wants to do is go out drinking and sale drugs. When Jim and mike end up with 20 kg of marjuwana jim gets a tragic end.
If You Liked this movie then check out Harsh Times the original motion picture soundtrack.
sucks.......2007-06-18
harsh times is the experience of watching this movie. go back to batman bale.
Harsh times was too harsh too watch!!!.......2007-06-05
First off, I am only giving this movie two stars for the way Christian Bale looked in his "wife-beater"/undershirt. Other than that, the rest of this movie was abysmal. Bale was terribly miscast in this role. The thug routine does not fit him. His talents were wasted. Freddy Rodriguez' performance was forgettable and the dialog between the two was horribly written and executed. We will not even get on the horrible accent since other reviewers already mentioned that. Eva Longoria had minimal screen time and I was wondering what the purpose of her character was. In addition, I looked at the end credits and I noticed that Bale was one of the executive producers for this. He should have rethought about putting his name on this mess. Overall, this movie was a hot"100 degree" mess. Please avoid this like a beat down.
Surprisingly Bad.......2007-06-02
Oddly enough, considering the cast and the high quality of acting I was very disappointed in this movie. The story is both boring and exceedingly predicable. Could any two human beings be so monumentally screwed up and succeed in life at any level? The lead character is not only a lowly mess but a complete looser. Not only did I find it hard to relate to the character, it got to the point I didn't even care. I turned the movie off within just minutes from the end not being able to stomach it anymore.
Its just a study in the worst of humanity slithering around in alcohol abuse, drug abuse and misery. This movie proves if you give good actors a poor story a shallow script and pathetic dialog you can't expect them to pull off a decent movie.

This classic family film made a star of 12-year-old Elizabeth Taylor in the title role as spunky Velvet Brown, a girl who's determined to enter her horse, Pie, in the Grand National Steeplechase. Critic Pauline Kael called it "One of the most likeable movies of all time." Mickey Rooney costars as a young man who helps Velvet train Pie for the big race. At the last minute, Velvet herself has to ride Pie in the tournament and cuts her hair to pass for a jockey. Anne Revere won an Oscar as Velvet's mother, as did editor Robert J. Kern, who cut together a terrifically exciting horse race. Donald Crisp and Angela Lansbury are also featured as members of the Brown family. --Jim Emerson
Description
Enchantingly beautiful Elizabeth Taylor became a movie star at age twelve after starring in this classic about a girl and her jockey pal (Mickey Rooney) who transform an unruly horse into a champion.
Customer Reviews:
Love this movie, but the quality is not remastered..........2007-07-01
Love this story about a girl who won a national horse race in England, but why did Warner release a movie like this to DVD without cleaning it up? It has white dots, squiggles, and even green rings in the picture. A couple of times I even saw a black line in the film, which was distracting. This is the movie that made Elizabeth Taylor a star; it deserved a respectable cleanup before its release.
Belief in a Dream.......2007-06-24
To illustrate the power of the film and especially of Elizabeth Taylor's special quality of illuminosity she brought to it, I read somewhere that a returning WWII GI had come home emotionally depressed and empty from his war experience. He wandered into a movie theater to see this film and came out with at least some sense of his faith in the world and in himself restored based on watching this child's still intact ability to dream and hope.
Film making and story telling at its best!!!.......2007-06-05
It's been years since I've seen this film, and I'd have to say that I was a kid when I first saw this on an old black and white TV. When it was released on a DVD, my wife and I sat down and really enjoyed this fabulous film. We didn't find that it was made poorly. Just the opposite. It had all the earmarks of a fine film - joy, suspense, love, action, drama, comedy, and the like. We didn't find we liked Mickey Rooney's character at first, but he grew on us, and Elizabeth Taylor was simply marvelous, as were her parents. Thoe whole ensemble cast was terrific. And then we get to the horse race and that whole business. I can't say enough about it!! There's a scene in the film where Mickey Rooney tells a tale to the young boy, and it's done without any fanfare of the what the future might hold, but had there ever been plans of making a movie called "The Black Stallion," then this little scene in this film was the precursor.
A fine family film!! We need more like these today!! Highly recommended.
They just don't make 'em like this any more...........2007-05-25
I have probably seen this movie a dozen times from start to finish and each time I come away with a renewed appreciation for hope, hard work, dreams and - yes - folly. This movie, while without question dated and at times a little bit silly, stands the passage of time by virtue of its pure heart and strong moral messages. Velvet Brown - the 12 year old daughter of a butcher in the small town of Sewels in England - wins her gelding, The Pie, in a one-shilling-per-ticket raffle. Mi Taylor, a young American lad walking the roads and lanes of England, comes to visit the Browns and ends up staying and training Velvet and The Pie for the Grand National - the Greatest Horse Race In The World, according to ex-jockey Mi Taylor. My favorite character in the film is hands down Mrs. Brown, the mother, played by the inscrutable Anne Revere. She is wise, gentle, strong - at 20 she swam the English channel - her trainer was Mi Taylor's fater, Dan Taylor - as she says, "there was greatness in him". There is greatness in her. Watch out for the speech she gives her daughter up in the attic when she tells Velvet that she will back her crazy dream to enter the Pie in the Grand National - she believes that "everyone is intitled once in their life to a breathtaking piece of folly". She explains to her daughter that this dream must last her for her whole life- that she must know when it is over and to move on. There is a time for everything in life, she explains - a time for riding a horse in the Grand national, a time for marriage, children, yes even for dying. IN these crazy times when we all want everything fast, now, right away - Mrs. Brown's calm and sensible pacing make the world make sense. Enjoy the film's many mealtimes and small moments. One oddity though - in a family that appears to be English, living in England, the casting directors saw fit to put a very American actor in the part of the youngest Brown child, Donald. Go figure!
ONE OF FINEST FAMILY FILMS, ONE OF MOST EXCITING RACES.......2007-04-29
National Velvet is one of the finest family films ever made, and it contains one of the most exciting races, perhaps second only to the chariot race in Ben-Hur. Directed by Clarence Brown (The Yearling, The White Cliffs Of Dover, Edison The Man), who was nominated for Best Director, and based upon Enid Bagnold's novel, it tells the story of a girl named Velvet Brown, who is in love with horses - portrayed passionately and innocently by Elizabeth Taylor. Her father, Mr. Brown - played with good-natured stubbornness by Donald Crisp - and mother, Mrs. Brown - infused with even-tempered wisdom and efficiency by Anne Revere, who won the Oscar for her performance - provide a lot of the entertainment with their constant and playful bantering. Her brother, Donald - played comically but with stone-faced seriousness by Jackie 'Butch' Jenkins - older sister Edwina - given typical teenage aloofness by Angela Lansbury - and younger sister Mally - made likable but somewhat forgettable by Juanita Quigley - round out the family.
The real story is about the relationship between Velvet and a young itinerate named Mi - one of Mickey Rooney's most memorable performances. Mi's father knew the family, and now the son shows up on their doorstep with the idea of robbing them. But he changes his mind after realizing there is something about this family he would like to get to know. Velvet overwhelms him with her obsession over horses, especially since he dislikes them - apparently because of some bad experience. But he changes his mind when quite by chance she wins the county's finest stallion in a lottery. Mi realizes the horse's potential when he jumps a six foot wall, and helps Velvet train him for the Grand National - the most gruelling and dangerous steeplechase in terfdom, full of treacherous jumps and water hazards.
Besides the nomination for director Clarence Brown and the win for actress Anne Revere, the film was also nominated for its lush cinematography and delightful art direction, and won for its masterful editing. Much of this is due to editor Robert Kern's handling of the race, which forms the climax of the film. Except for the chariot race in Ben-Hur, I don't think there has ever been a more realistically staged or exciting race in a film. The stunt work is incredible. It would be a miracle if no men or horses were injured, because they go over those jumps pall mall, sometimes landing, apparently, on their heads, and often piling up on each other. Kudos to the stunt people, horses and trainers.
National Velvet warms and excites the heart, while leaving an impression of human nobility and spiritual values that will not soon be forgotten. And if someone isn't a horse lover at the end of this film, then there's no hope that they ever will be. Great directorial insight, intelligent writing, superb performances and top notch production values make this a small masterpiece.

When Jim and mike end up with 20 kg of marjuwana jim gets a tragic end.

sucks.......2007-06-18
harsh times is the experience of watching this movie. go back to batman bale.
