An endless white landscape of rolling hills and snow-blanketed forests. A lonely acoustic score (by Danny Elfman) playing in the background. A vision of rural simplicity portrayed in hushed tones. The stillness is about to shatter. Brothers Hank (Bill Paxton), an accountant at a small-town feed store, and Jacob (Billy Bob Thornton), an unemployed, hygienically challenged dim bulb, accompanied by Jacob's oafish pal Lou (Brent Briscoe), stumble across a downed plane in the brush containing a corpse and a sack containing millions of dollars--surely the aftermath of a drug deal, they conclude. Greed overcomes good sense, and the three agree to hide the money for a year and keep the secret to themselves. A simple plan indeed, and it doesn't take long for it to go all to hell as the lure of wealth tears at kinship and friendship, and the ruthless machinations of impetuous partners leave a body count in its wake. Bridget Fonda costars as Hank's wife, whose initial hesitation gives way to cold-blooded plotting. Sam Raimi, best known for wowing audiences with stylistic gymnastics and manic mayhem, directs this quietly desperate thriller with chilly restraint, finding its cold, tragic heart in the estranged relationship between Hank and Jacob: the college boy blind to the truth of his own family and the town loser whose tortured soul reveals a humanity lost on his brother (a brilliant performance by Thornton). Adapted by Scott B. Smith from his acclaimed novel. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars One of a kind........2007-01-12

There are not enough movies like this that actually keep you eager to know what happens next. Lots of twists and surprises and believable characters played by a dynamite cast. Instead of catering to squeamish viewers, the film is high on vividity to help us better perceive the intensity of the situation.

5 out of 5 stars A Twisted Brilliant Thriller.......2006-10-28

Director Sam Raimi crafts this story from the best seller. Set in a cold, wintry rural landscape, Brothers Hank (smart accountant Bill Paxton) and Jacob (dim-witted Billy Bob Thornton), along with Jacob's equally dumb friend Lou (Brent Briscoe), find a downed plane full of four million dollars. The pilot is dead and no one else knows about it. Could it be drug money? Sounds simple. However, family, greed and common sense don't always mix and the story soon goes haywire. No need to give away anything else other than there is an unexpected body count and an ending that will shock. This is one of those sleeper hits that never fails to surprise and delight. Bridget Fonda costars as Paxton's wife who goes through her own metamorphosis.

4 out of 5 stars A Simple Plan (1998).......2006-07-21

Director: Sam Raimi
Cast: Bill Paxton, Billy Bob Thornton, Bridget Fonda, Brent Briscoe, Jack Walsh, Chelcie Ross, Becky Ann Baker, Gary Cole, Bob Davis.
Running Time: 121 minutes
Rated R for violence and language.

This is a diabolical tale about the wages of greed. Although it is played straight without intentional humor, the irony is so delicious at times that you might find yourself laughing. Jacob Mitchell (Billy Bob Thornton) is the one who begins to feel evil, and rightly so as the bodies begin to pile up. His presumably smarter brother Hank (Bill Paxton) feels mostly fear as he struggles to cover up one mishap after another. Their problems begin when they and Jacob's buddy Lou Chambers (Brent Briscoe) stumble onto a downed airplane in the woods covered with snow in which they find one dead person being feasted on by crows and a duffle bag full of hundred dollar bills. Lou, who might represent the common man, says, let's keep it. Hank, who could be rational man, says, whoa, this money belongs to somebody and besides we could get into trouble. We better turn it in. And Jacob, who is the natural man, sides with his buddy Lou. After all they're country poor and this is probably drug money that nobody is going to miss. And anyway, what can go wrong?

Well, as Ben Franklin observed a long time ago, `Three can keep a secret, if two of them are dead.' As they wait for spring to come and the plane to be discovered before they risk spending the money, the `simple plan' begins to unravel with horrific consequences. Thornton and Briscoe play country boys to perfection, and Paxton does a great job as a small town golden boy seriously compromised. Bridget Fonda plays Hank's pregnant wife, who turns out to be the brains (as it were) of the group. There are some very nice plot twists as the all too human emotions of the characters begin to crash into one another. Inevitably we have a morality tale in which the wages of sin are fully realized. Sam Raimi's ("The Evil Dead", "Spiderman) direction captures well the atmosphere of North Country America without any obvious straining for effect. He gets great mileage out of a few crows (actually some of them are ravens, I think) and a whole lot of snow. Scott B. Smith's script (from his novel) is clever and morally astute. The characterizations are excellent and the story psychologically satisfying. Particularly agreeable was the very sad, ironic end for Hank and his wife, who find that all the self-created hell they went through led them back to where they began, but without their souls. A dark message about greed and honesty is a topsy-turvey roller-coaster ride with beautiful cinematography and slick direction from horror-master Raimi. Not one for those who need a cheering-up session.

5 out of 5 stars Mistic Movie.......2006-06-29

A friend of mine told me to watch this movie. We were talking about things that can get really bad, and just go out of control. At first I wasn't sure if I wanted to watch. I prefer those girly movies. Oh mine! The movie was so good! I couldn't stop watching. It got so late and I had to come back the next day to finish watching, I was so eager to know the ending of the movie. Billy Bob represented his movie character so well. It is a dark, very interesting movie.

5 out of 5 stars Quality Movie That Adults Will Enjoy.......2006-06-07

*****
I liked this film a lot. It was entertaining, suspenseful, and made me think. It's staying with me and I'm continuing to think about it.

"A Simple Plan" asks the question, "What if you found $4.4 million in a gym bag in the woods...would you keep it...what if you thought there was a reasonably good chance you'd never get caught...that no one would ever know?" This is what happens to the central characters. The DVD cover advertises, "Sometimes good people do evil things." Once they make their decision, and plan their plan, the movie illustrates how consequences happen that are completely unanticipated.

Bill Paxton plays the main character and is wonderful as a typical "good" middle-class accountant in a small rural town. Bridget Fonda does an excellent job as his wife, who is very idealistic and moralistic until she realizes that the scenario is not hypothetical---in fact, she has to decide what to do, and she makes decisions different from what I would have expected. Billy Bob Thornton is predictably great, of course, playing a rural man (the main character's brother) who has never had a chance in the town he lives in and just wants to truly have a life, and in his own way, do what is right; he is handicapped, however, by his intelligence, his eccentricity, and his background. I felt a lot of sympathy for his character, and since I'm a person more like his brother, it was fascinating to see how he lived and thought...as the movie progressed, his middle-class brother gained empathy for the difficult life he led, too.

I didn't think that any of the pacing was slow, as other reviewers have said. I thought that the starkness and the pacing fit in beautifully with the movie and it gave me a chance to process what was going on. One moral decision led to another, and each of them made me think "Would I do that?" and "Could I do that?" It made me see how seductive certain crimes in certain circumstances can be to any one of us.

This is a quality, very suspenseful, provocative film. I think it would be equally enjoyable for men and women but definitely not for children at all, as the themes are very heavy and mature.

There are no special features or subtitles. I generally like subtitles, but they are not necessary in this film for hearing people, as everyone speaks very clearly.

I cannot imagine how anyone would dislike this movie. There is some violence, but none of it is gratuitous. I generally really dislike violence in movies, but it was worth it for the experience I took away after watching it.

Compress a season's worth of MTV's The Real World into 90 minutes, marry it to a Girls Gone Wild video, and basically you've got The Real Cancun, an ambitious if unwieldy effort to extract a feature film from bawdy footage of a spring break spent in sunny Mexico. Created by The Real World's production team, Cancun tosses 16 attractive college kids into an unrestrained, endless party in paradise, where the waves are majestic, the booze flows freely, and wanton sex--despite free-form nudity and ample opportunity--proves a surprisingly elusive dream. The trouble here is that a lot of spaghetti was thrown at the wall, but none of it sticks: There are too many people, not enough time to develop compelling individual stories or relationship cycles, and an unwillingness among most of the cast to make a leap from relaxed licentiousness to uncensored lust. In other words, there's no payoff anywhere. --Tom Keogh

2 out of 5 stars is a show on dvd.......2007-01-11

is a show like the real world, and the road rules, but in dvd and with an ending, will get you hipper but not the best, if you want the real cancun you better of going there for real.

2 out of 5 stars It's boring and not sure what it wants to be........2006-08-16

On a whim I decided to watch "The Real Cancun" having missed its all to short theatrical release. I am positive I am older than the target audience but "The Real World" and "Road Rules" were brand new when I was in college in the early 1990's and I was a fan of both those series.

This movie was edited very poorly. There are way too many characters to keep track of, and the audience cannot possibly know or care about any of them. The movie follows a simple pattern. We'll start to get a glimpses into some of the characters but then it reverts to a collage of party and beach scenes, followed by a insight from another character then more partying. The movie can't even decide if it cares about any of these kids or if it just wants to be some sort of skin flick, although it doesn't succeed there either because not much skin is shown.

The movie does depict more than a few of the kids in situations they are sure to regret when they are older, especially since the behavior is chronicled and will be available in bargain dvd bins for years to come. The twin girls (I forget there names) come off especially bad.

The extras include interviews with some of the cast members at a premier party. This is especially interesting because they all look mortified. There are several deleted scenes, most of which are boring. There is one scene that I am curious as to why it was excised from the movie and that is the women's wet t-shirt contest. It is a little more raunchy than anything else in the movie (thanks again to the twins), but a little raunch didn't faze the other hour or so of the movie so I continue to be curious as to why it was left out.

In the end this movie has little to recommend it and if you never see it you will not have missed anything important.

4 out of 5 stars Good if you like documentaries.......2006-03-13

Well, many people reviewed this movie as "a sure way to lower your IQ" and "with characters without personalities". I definitely don't share these views. I have a B.Sc. in pure maths and computer science, love classical music and play the piano. So would consider myself above the average intelligence.

The movie itself is a documentry about 16 contrasting characters (cassanova, nerd, virgin, slut, etc) living for one week under the same roof. It gives a better insight into what goes on in young people's minds than any useless psychology textbook.

And every human being has a character. You just have to look into it.

3 out of 5 stars There is a level of awfulness untouched by mere mortals here.......2006-01-09

With movies like Eurotrip, Hostel and Rules of Attraction (if only for a minute) focusing on the ugly American tourist stereotype, it's rather interesting that this "reality" movie takes a straight (albeit contrived by MTV) look at the tourist on vacation looking to score and presents the most despicable, depraved version possible. Do you carry that stereotype of the French being rude to tourists around with you? Well forget it, buddy. After this movie you'll wonder why the French don't kill American tourists and why everyone else is so polite.

A bunch of generic Frat types go to Cancun for drinking and wet t-shirt contests. Many of them "hook up" as the kids call it these days. One gets the "shy kid gets booze and becomes wild man" storyline (and in the extras you discover that the reason why he wasn't getting naked on the beach with the blond has more to do with his girlfriend back home than repression) and the rest get lamer stories. There's one poor guy that spends most of his time playing guitar and must content himself to be solo dude - like Jeff Goldblum in The Big Chill when everyone else is taking full advantage of the college reunion. Although this guy writes really awful songs like "The STD song" and "Back in the 80s" which everyone in the house loves because everyone in the house is drunk.

So why am I giving this movie three stars instead of the customary one? Because it's so awful that it almost makes it to good, but at very least it's important. You will want to slap everyone associated with this movie, so just think about that the next time you're in Europe and can't get a decent cheeseburger and want to complain to the waiter.

1 out of 5 stars This Movie was lame!.......2005-11-20
