Fatal Attraction (Special Collector's Edition)

Starring:Michael Douglas, Anne Archer
Studio: Paramount
Product Type: DVD

Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video
The date movie of the late 1980s, this had everyone arguing in the aisles. Does Michael Douglas deserve the unwanted attention he and his family are receiving at the hands of loony stalker Glenn Close? After a weekend extramarital affair with colleague Close, he returns home to wife Anne Archer, and Close becomes progressively angrier. You might even say she is boiling bunny mad.

Directed by Adrian Lyne, this is not your average thriller, as it garnered six Academy Award nominations. The plot is too obvious, but the dialogue rings true and the intense performances hold the story together. Anne Archer deserves kudos for side-stepping cliché as the strong but frightened wife, and Close is a scream as she chews up the scenery.

The film's original ending, which was reshot after poor preview screenings, has been added to the video release. --Rochelle O'Gorman

5 out of 5 stars "Flashdance" director's 1987 blockbuster.......2007-04-12

FLASHDANCE director Adrian Lyne brought moviegoers this 1987 blockbuster starring Michael Douglas,Glenn Close and Anne Archer. New York lawyer Dan Gallagher(Douglas) has an affair with a colleague named Alex(Close). Dan's wife Kate(Archer) learns about the affair and is briefly pissed at him. Kate even threatened to kill Alex if she came within range of her,Dan and their young son again. Alex herself became violent in one of the last scenes, wielding a filet knife but she ends up stabbed with it,drowning in the Gallaghers' water-filled bathtub. I believe that was where Alex and Kate were fighting a duel. I remember a scene like that in 1992's THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE. Other '87 blockbusters include THREE MEN AND A BABY,LETHAL WEAPON and BEVERLY HILLS COP 2. Aside from FLASHDANCE,Lyne directed 1986's 9 1/2 WEEKS. Douglas' fans also loved him in other favorites like BASIC INSTINCT,IT'S MY TURN despite its box-office disappointment,THE IN-LAWS,THE WAR OF THE ROSES,ROMANCING THE STONE,THE JEWEL OF THE NILE,COMA,THE CHINA SYNDROME,THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT and FALLING DOWN.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing...........2007-04-04

If, like me, you bought this DVD with fond memories of the opening scenes of Ms. Archer, delectable in her white underthings, be prepared to be disappointed. The widescreen (ha!) aspect chops the bottom off both the screen and Ms. Archer in the opening moments.

*Sigh*

4 out of 5 stars Bunny a la Mode!.......2007-02-01

I watch this movie when I need a good jolt of "realism." Glenn Close plays a psychotic stalker to Michael Douglas' "it-happened-only-one-time, it-didn't-mean-a-thing" adulterer. Honey, didn't your daddy tell you it only takes one time?

With the alternate ending included, as well as the interviews with the cast members, makes this a must-have film.

On the down side, why she had to boil the bunny was just wrong!!

4 out of 5 stars The moral of the story...Don't cheat on your wife with psycho chicks!.......2007-01-16

This movie is a classic! A story about a successful attorney Dan (Douglas)who should have known better than to have an affair with a sexy but psycotic Alex Forrest (Glen Close). Dan is a happily married guy with a beautiful wife and a daughter (the 'daughter' who totally looks, talks and dresses like a boy! This role could have been cast better in my opinion or they could have at least dressed the little girl like a GIRL to avoid confusion, especially since her hair is very short and her face rather ambiguous) and for some reason decides to have a fling while his wife is out of town. It's a little hard to see his motive for the affair, Alex is sexy and wild but not nearly as pretty as Dan's wife and Glen Close not only plays a good psycotic but she looks the part too. I think this movie should have had better character development and maybe a better motive for Dan cheating. As it is, it doesn't make a lot of sense that he would be perfectly happy and still cheat. There also is not a whole lot about Dan which gives the viewer sympathy for him. If anything Dan just comes off as a shallow jerk and he gets exactly what he deserves. Regardless you can really feel the chemistry between Close and Douglas as they share a steamy, sex filled weekend together. The affair quickly goes from a weekend between two adults to a full blown obsession as Close falls madly 'in love' with Douglas. Alex attempts suicide, calls non-stop, shows up at Dan's work, threatens to tell his wife, claims she's pregnant, mutilates and boils his daughter's bunny and makes Dan's life hell all the while claiming to be in love with him. You can't really feel sorry for Dan because he did a really dumb thing, especially considering he should know the law but you feel sorry for his wife and kid. Dan clearly plays the fool as he falls for Alex's charms and fails to get to know her or set healthy boundries. There are hints that Alex is not what she seems, she's clingy, unstable, manipulative and over analyzes his every word. A man who's thinking with his brain would not be fooled by her act but Dan is clearly thinking with something else and pays the terrible price. The movie is a little dated and unrealistic but other than that it's a great story with good suspense, awesome acting, great surprises and a very valuable lesson.

4 out of 5 stars A riviting study of a maniac,, concealed in a woman's body........2007-01-09

Glenn Close is excellent in this story of an obsessive, insane person, hell bent on destroying lives, the love scenes are a bit graffic, but beyond that, wonderful acting, edge of your seat viewing, worth the trip.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars kind of lame and a waste of time.......2007-06-05

I got it for Alicia Silverstone. The actress who plays the male lead's girflriend does some interesting things and is rather charming.
And the main lead? The male lead? The guy's name is Elwes, I believe. I only wish the director could have asked him to wipe that dumb grin from his face. Oh yeah, fake curls (over either eye) do not make actors
(in their 30s) suddenly look to be in their 20s. This sort of thing gets to be annoying--and is witnessed (usually) in turkey flicks like this.

As I said, the only real reason to see this is Alicia Silverstone, although, to be sure, she got better looking as she got older and matured as a woman.

Got the DVD quite cheap--otherwise would have probably passed on it.

2 out of 5 stars A Lolita from hell.......2007-03-29

This was Alicia Silverstone's debut film after which she went on to star in some Aerosmith videos (what red-blooded American male can ever forget seeing her and Liv Tyler in "Crazy"?) after which she got the lead in Clueless (1995) and the rest is cinematic history.

In Clueless of course she was a sweet, adorable and slightly empty-headed Valley Girl. Here she is what might be called a Lolita from hell. Director Alan Shapiro even has her do a Sue Lyon (from Kubrick's 1964 Lolita) looking-over-her-sunglasses imitation to start the film. We soon learn that she is 14 "almost 15." (Silverstone was actually 15-years-old during the filming.) She is also rich and very talented, plays a classical piano, knows the scientific names of beetles and wasps, has skipped two grades, etc. The film itself might be dubbed a kind of "Fatal Attraction" for teeny-boppers.

Cary Elwes plays Nick Eliot who is looking for some digs as the film begins. He is a writer who just got a gig with an important, trendy magazine. After nearly bumping into Adrian (Silverstone) with his car, he looks askance and sees a sign advertising a cottage for rent in back of a large house with estate. Turns out this is where Adrian lives with her parents.

Somehow this reminds me of William Holden as the writer Joe Gillis pulling into that driveway on Sunset Boulevard (1950). He should have looked in the other direction! He should have run the other way! When Little Miss Crazy gets a crush, it is a hum-dinger. Maybe Nick should have just surrendered at the start and she would have been bored with him in a couple of months at most. But unfortunately, Nick Eliot is the epitome of the clueless male. He doesn't see the danger until it is too late. He is slightly compromised because he has kissed her, he has wandered about her house when her parents haven't been at home, and worse yet he doesn't have an inkling of the strength of her passion. To be honest I felt a little sorry for her having to deal with all that rejection! I think this would have played more realistically had Adrian's part been given to an ugly little shrew in the making. But then of course the film would not have found any kind of audience.

Well, this is a familiar premise and the kind I like to see worked out and resolved--well, I like to look at Alicia. Unfortunately Alan Shapiro, who also wrote the script, has the originality of a photocopy machine and just milks the premise while mindlessly escalating the bizarro. Suffice it to say that Little Miss Crazy doesn't take no for an answer and that Nick stupidly behaves in a way that just makes his situation worse. The ending does have the virtue of being nicely ironic while suggesting the hoped-for sequel.

4 out of 5 stars entertaining movie.......2006-08-15

this movie is about a 14 year old who is obsessed with a 28 year old neighbour and stalks him and doesn't everything she can to manipulate him and the people around her just to get close to him. When he doesn't give her what she wanted and tried to stay away from her, she accused him of molestation and planted evidence because she was a sicko who was not getting the attention she desperately wanted. This movies show you just how easy it is to be manipulated by people who do things for selfish reassons

5 out of 5 stars The Crush.......2006-08-08

I Love this Movie its a grat show i have seen it over and over agan 10 OUT OF 10

5 out of 5 stars Realistic Depiction of Romance and Adolescent Development.......2006-01-09

I thought this movie was very realistic. It confirms what I have found out in real life: that teenage girls are seductive, flirting, spiteful, jealous, lying, conniving, and Evil little creatures that will make you regret the day you were ever born.

In this movie and in real life, teenage girls often harass older men until they go crazy. They also get jealous of some guys' older girlfriends and try to kill them. (As we found out the hard way, didn't we babe? I'm so sorry for what she did to you.)

This movie was also realistic because it showed how teenage girls make shrines dedicated to the man they love, filled with candles. Believe me, I have seen many of these throughout my career as a police detective, and now as a professional private investigator. You wouldn't believe how many murders committed by rich white chicks with carousels in their attics go unreported by the media in this country.

(This can only be because of the bias of the mainstream media, which is not surprising considering that all of the media is secretely controlled by evil teenage girls who are plotting to overthrow the government and take control of the world. But I digress...)

This movie should serve as a warning for all you men out there. It is difficult, but you will just have to put up with all those teenage girls constantly throwing themselves at you. Better yet, just run away! Or be gay. Do it for your own good!

On a side note, I am really surprised that Alicia Silverstone had the courage as an actress to portray teenage girls for what they really are in this movie. She is to be commended for that.

The movie is informative, and educational. I recommend watching it with the entire family, preschoolers included.

Movie Grade: A+

I hope this review helped.

Description

There's never been a Carmen like this one - there's never been a Don Jose like Baryshnikov! Ballet superstars Mikhail Baryshnikov and Zizi Jeanmaire sizzle in this erotically charged ballet set to the music and story of Carmen. The program's highlight is a sexy duet between the show's stars, in which they express their fatal attraction. Famed choreographer Roland Petit created this dance spectacular, set to Georges Bizet's classic music. This remarkable ballet provides Baryshnikov with one of his greatest roles, and proves yet again he is the most charismatic performer of our time!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Anything with Baryshnikov.......2007-02-25

I consider Barishnikov the greatest male dancer of our time and there is unfortunately very little by him available so I will get anything with his name on it. This is from his early days in the US but he is marvellous - graceful and masculine at the same time. Zizi Jeanmarie is also marvellous, I cannot fathom how old she was but since I saw her in movies in the 50sh she must have moved on a bit. And the work of Roland Petit, although perhaps slightly dated, is still innovative and breathtaking.

5 out of 5 stars Another great ballet........2006-11-11

I just love this DVD and Baryshnikov, he is just beautiful. Carmen is such a moving ballet it is just wonderful. Also this beautiful little Zizi Jeanmarie, what a wonderful dancer. She is just great to watch. Many thanks for such great entertainment. Patricia (Aussie)

2 out of 5 stars Carmen Fails.......2006-07-18

Any resemblance between this production and Bizet's opera is purely accidental and not intentional. Baryshnikov, as always, is fantastic but Zizi Jeanmarie is a smiling flirty chick who just can't carry off the character. In addition, the story is not conveyed as essential elements of the story are conspicuously absent to anyone who has seen the opera. All in all, I which I had never spent my money on it.

2 out of 5 stars Of little interest..........2006-07-02

While any ballet featuring Mikhail might be reason enough to watch it, this work might be the exception. Very little of the choreography is appealing and the sets are very bland. This is the drabest Spain I've seen pictured in a good while. Mikhail acquits himself nicely, but sadly Zizi does not. While perhaps an expressive and talented dancer in her heyday, here she appears to be afraid of injury and never really stretches herself. You can see the concentration on her face as she prepares for simple back attitudes. She has an adequate port-de-bras, but her shoulders, so pivotal to Spanish dance, barely twitch when they should shimmy. Carmen was a vivacious gypsy, but Zizi gives us a merely brittle, hesitant gamine with a toothy smile. She is acting like hell, but it is not enough to cover her flaws.

3 out of 5 stars Poor Teaming Because of Age Disparity.......2003-02-25

Carmen is a great ballet with the talented Roland Petite as choreographer. I first watched ZiZi dance it in The Black Tights when I was a teenager. I thought she was fabulous then -- sexy, sultry and seductive. Her technique was flawless. Now decades later, when I watched her again dancing with Baryshnikov, I couldn't help sighing sentimentally,' Ah, the cruelty of passing time!' Faded is her beauty, gone is her vibrancy and allure, missing is some of the difficult and fancy footwork which makes the ballet so pleasing and exciting. Why did they put her opposite the golden Adonis? The age disparity is made more obvious. There is a lack of spark or passion between them. It is unconvincing that he is madly in love with her.It makes sense that The Paris Opera Ballet makes 40 the mandatory retirement age for their ballerinas since more or less they will lose their stamina. If you had watched the video 'Ballerina: Karen Kain 'in which are excepts from Carmen, you would understand what I mean and would not think of me as being harsh and unfair. There are so many productions of Swan Lake, Giselle, Don Quixote ...etc in Video and DVD. Why is there only one Carmen? I really look forward to seeing more.

Carl Reiner tried to give the Mel Brooks treatment to the Fatal Attraction/Basic Instinct genre of films about vicious, conniving women and the not-so-bright men who get involved with them. In this case, it's Armand Assante, an actor not particularly known for his comedic chops. He plays a guy who is both a police detective and a defense attorney, so he can defend the people he arrests. He becomes the target of a female stalker (Sean Young, in a bit of typecasting), as well as the dupe in a murder plot involving his wife (Kate Nelligan). Reiner takes a scattershot approach to comedy, hoping to play in the same ballpark as the Zucker brothers or Brooks. While he hits a few singles and the occasional double, he never knocks a joke out of the park and so the movie winds up with an awful lot of pop fouls. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars SUPER FUNNY PARODY!!.......2007-07-03

A very, very funny laugh-out-loud spoof in the "Leslie Nielsen" tradition. Armand Assante is really amusing and makes ridiculous scenes work terrifically. Highly recommended if you just want to be entertained with no intellectual thought.

It is a movie that is a take off from the real McCoy movies. It is goofy but a fun movie...especially if you know the movies they are doing the take off from. It will make you laugh. A good escape!

Oh what a glorious spoof! For the movie buff, spotting the homages to a plethora of films;for the lover of comedy a delicious black thriller.Superb performances, great sets, wonderful costumes and a non-stop pace. Ace movie!

Okay...
what is wrong with this picture? a movie on DVD (FULLSCREEN?) edition...well it happens..but this isn't a cheap knockoff...they have legendary Carl Reiner doing a commentary (he was the director) ...and to add insult to injury....several deleted scenes..PRESENTED in the proper 1:85 widescreen aspect ratio!!!

would it have killed them to issue in the proper ascpect ratio? Its still a very fun/inexpensive purchase, and the bonus features are strong for such a non-hit movie....just wondering WHY no widescreen?

enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars FATALLY FUNNY.......2006-03-26

Carl Reiner's FATAL INSTINCT is a surprisingly funny spoof of movies like FATAL ATTRACTION, BASIC INSTINCT, AND CHINATOWN. It benefits from a lot of AIRPLANE like sight gags and some wonderful one liners tossed off by its unusual cast. Armand Assante, not known for comedic roles, is very funny as the cop/lawyer embroiled in with a beautiful stalker (Sean Young in a sexy performance), and a greedy wife (the usually dramatic Kate Nelligan just perfect in this role) and her dumb lover (Christopher McDonald) who plan to bump him off. Add a vindictive ex-con (James Remar), a devoted secretary (Sherilyn Fenn) and Judge Tony Randall and you have the ingredients for a rather hilarious send up. I laughed a lot and I think you will too!

Did you light up a cigarette today? Did someone you love? Despite everything we know about the dangers of cigarettes, we're raising a whole new generation of smokers in this country. And, increasingly, they are young women. What most people don't know is this: cigarettes are much more deadly for women than men. It's tobacco's smokey little secret; women who smoke get sicker and get sicker sooner than men who smoke. If you compare a man and a woman with similar smoking habits, women are twice as likely to die. Lung cancer claims the lives of more than 67,000 women a year. Think about that the next time you pick up a cigarette or see your favorite actress light up on the big screen. Dr. Nancy Snyderman explores the reasons why women smoke.
