The only remaining evidence that Sylvester Stallone might have had a respectable career, this 1976 Oscar winner (for Best Picture, Director, and Editing) is still the quintessential ode to an underdog and one of the best boxing movies ever made. After writing the script about a two-bit boxer who gets a "million-to-one shot" against the world heavyweight champion, Stallone insisted that he star in the title role, and his equally unknown status helped to catapult him (and this rousing film) to overnight success. The story is familiar, but it has been handled with such vitality and emotional honesty that you can't help but leap and cheer for Rocky Balboa, the chump turned champ (despite his valiant defeat in the ring) who stuns the boxing world with the support of his timid girlfriend, Adrian (Talia Shire), and grizzled trainer, Gus (Burgess Meredith). Oscar nominations went to all the lead actors (including Burt Young as Adrian's hot-tempered brother), but four sequels could never top the universal appeal of this low-budget crowd pleaser. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Rocky Balboa, club fighter from the mean streets of Philadelphia, gets an unlikely shot at the heavyweight championship of the world by taking on champion Apollo Creed. The irresistible story of the boxer who gives his all to win the championship title won Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director and catapulted Sylvester Stallone to superstardom.

The sixth installment of the Rocky series picks up the story of the Italian Stallion 16 years after the morose Rocky V. And sure, at his advanced age, Sylvester Stallone now looks like one of those sides of beef his character used to pound on. No matter. Somehow you buy the premise after all these years, even if it takes forever for Rocky Balboa to stop wallowing in self-pity (Adrian is dead, his old haunts are demolished) and get down to the business of drinking raw eggs and running up staircases. The business at hand is an unlikely exhibition fight with champion Mason Dixon (Antonio Tarver), which the near-sexagenarian Mr. Balboa has no business accepting. Of course, just as sure as the horns of Bill Conti's theme music are even now trumpeting through your head, the ol' Rock might have a punch or two left in him. Stallone wrote and directed, and there isn't much to say except that the movie steps in its pre-determined paces with a canny sense of what has come before (it's practically an homage to all the previous Rocky pictures, complete with fleeting flashbacks). Burt Young is around again, and Geraldine Hughes makes an appealing, rather chaste female companion for Rocky. Stallone's Rocky has gotten suspiciously articulate over the years, but he still knows how to slouch. If Stallone never forgets that, he can probably keep the franchise rolling. --Robert Horton

When he loses a highly publicized virtual boxing match to ex-champ Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), reigning heavyweight titleholder Mason Dixon (Antonio Tarver) retaliates by challenging the Italian Stallion to a nationally televised, 10-round exhibition bout. To the surprise of his son (Milo Ventimiglia, TV's Heroes) and friends, Rocky agrees to come out of retirement and face an opponent who's faster, stronger and thirty years his junior. With the odds stacked firmly against him, Rocky takes on Dixon in what will become the greatest fight in boxing history, a hard-hitting, action-packed battle of the ages!

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Stallone Film of ALL TIME !!!.......2007-06-28

Forget about Australia fining Stallone for steroids! If he can make Rambo 4 as good as Rocky Balboa than I'm sold!

This movie really took me by surprise. I heard the premise and laughed my butt of! It sounds so stupid that I was suprised they made this movie, but I'm really glad they did :)

Stallone really makes you feel for and root for Rocky the whole way through. To see all the crap he's been through physically, emotionally, etc... really gets you feeling for the Rock.

And by the end you get this feeling that both you and Rocky and going through the same emotions. That connection that Stallone makes with the audience is rare in this day of film, and he does it so well that this may be his crowing achievement.

I really hope Rambo 4 is as good as this :)

4 out of 5 stars 'Rocky Balboa' puts the soul back into the franchise.......2007-06-24

Thankfully, they didn't decide to name this movie Rocky VI, so we can forget that the fifth one ever happened. This unexpectedly good followup (but hopefully finale) to the Rocky saga is a real treat.

In the first two Rocky movies we had the real story. A rags to riches fighter dealing with family and money and fame. Sure it's simple and plays like a soap opera, but it's the simplicity of it all that's great. The fighting was about dignity and pride.

Rocky three, while perhaps the most fun of the franchise, can't be taken as seriously. Pitting Hulk Hogan and Mr T. against Rocky was entertaining, but pretty much just fluff. And Rocky IV was way too cheesy for me.

With Rocky Balboa, you can forget all the pro wrestlers and the Russian steroid driven He-Men. The soul is back. Here we have Rocky dealing with his dead wife, his relationship with his son and making corny but heartful motivational speeches to his loved ones around him. Surprisingly, it all works really well. Even before the actual fight takes place, or is even proposed, it's hard not to be sucked up into Rocky's story of hardship in Philidelphia.

The fight that takes place is between the old retired champ and a cocky young fighter, Dixon, who wants to use the match to gain popularity. Dixon encourages Rocky to keep the fight simple so he can lose with dignity, but of course Rocky has none of it. Here he is out to shed the demons of his past and prove to himself one last time that it was all worthwhile.

Overall, this movie was really good; a great last harrah for the frachnise. Did this movie need to be made? Probably not, but with a bitter taste left in our mouths from V, it's good to have a real finale to this saga. The fight itself was good, but a little by the numbers and not as gritty or edge of your seat as we've seen from previous outtings, which really is the only reason for the missing star. But I recommend this to fans of the franchise and welcome it in my collection.

4 out of 5 stars Rocky Wins.......2007-06-23

A fitting finale to the Rocky (aka Rocko) saga. It was almost real-life iin the way it mirrored modern boxing's penchant for the ridiculous, aka wrestlemania. Decent enough script with interesting flash-flashbacks. A surprisingly good film.

5 out of 5 stars Best since #1.......2007-06-20

This is the best Rocky since the first one. Has all the heart and emotion of the first 2 and none of the fluff. In fact, if there wasn't a fight at the end, I would have been just as happy. (although the fight was great!) Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars I agree--the Best Rocky Movie Since the First.......2007-06-16

I never saw Rocky VI in the theaters late last year, but learned about it through DVD. I have watched it over 8 times and I am just amazed by it and cannot believe it did not get the attention it deserved. I guess the only saving grace is that for the most part, critics understood the movie, and had a soft spot in their heart for it. Movies are to entertain but to some directors/actors, the goal is to make a difference, to make a point. The way Rocky handled himself through the movie, through the depths of despair, while also facing the reality of his own aging, Rocky shows us how to rise above it all "The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows" he says, "It's a very mean and nasty place... and I don't care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently, if you let it. Not you, me or nobody, is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit... It's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward... it's about how much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done. Now, if you know what you're worth, go out and get what your worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hits. And not pointing fingers saying: "You ain't what you wanna be because of him or her or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain't you! You're better than that!"

It is that single seen that allowed me to begin to deal with my own father's death and realize, "life sucks in so many ways, but fight it, don't let it knock you down, if you don't get up, life will keep you on the ground, permanently!

Bravo Rocky! Bravo Stallone! Thank you so much.

The Last Castle rides high on a wave of American patriotism, respectful of military service and protocol, and primed to ignite anyone's passion for justice against corrupted ideals. This intense prison drama begins when a court-martialed three-star general (Robert Redford) is sentenced to military prison for defying a presidential command. The prison's warden (James Gandolfini) is a jealous martinet who's never seen combat, and when the jailed general seizes command of the prison to protest the warden's abuse of power, The Last Castle erupts toward a classic showdown between integrity and cowardice. Former critic and West Point graduate Rod Lurie (The Contender) directs this intimate battle with manipulative skill, appealing more to emotions than intelligence, but his stellar cast keeps the action on track, and a potent script returns flag-waving to its rightful place of honor. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2007-06-22

Robert Redford and James Gandolfini are excellent in this movie. It is probably not really believable, but great fun to watch. A 3-star general goes to prison and ultimately organizes the prisoners to justifiably take over the prison. Well written and well worth the watch.

5 out of 5 stars Robert Redford fans........2007-05-07

This is a great movie but not recommended for children under age 15. A great performance by Robert Redford. This movie is about a prison. Well worth getting and watching. a real eye-opener to life in prison, not just the prisoners but the prison staff also.

3 out of 5 stars Redford's Career.......2007-02-24

I liked this movies but I do think Robert Redford Needs to retire. He just looks old to be playing the age he played in this movie. Or they could have made him look older.

Amazon.com essential video

If a musical sci-fi satire about an alien transvestite named Frank-n-Furter, who is building the perfect man while playing sexual games with his virginal visitors, sounds like an intriguing premise for a movie, then you're in for a treat. Not only is The Rocky Horror Picture all this and more, but it stars the surprising cast of Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick (as the demure Janet and uptight Brad, who get lost in a storm and find themselves stranded at Frank-n-Furter's mansion), Meat Loaf (as the rebel Eddie), Charles Gray (as our criminologist and narrator), and, of course, the inimitable Tim Curry as our "sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania."

Upon its release in 1975, the film was an astounding flop. But a few devotees persuaded a New York theater to show it at midnight, and thus was born one of the ultimate cult films of all time. The songs are addictive (just try getting "The Time Warp" or "Toucha Toucha Touch Me" out of your head), the raunchiness amusing, and the plot line utterly ridiculous--in other words, this film is simply tremendous good fun. The downfall, however, is that much of the amusement is found in the audience participation that is obviously missing from a video version (viewers in theaters shout lines at the screen and use props--such as holding up newspapers and shooting water guns during the storm, and throwing rice during a wedding scene). Watched alone as a straight movie, Rocky Horror loses a tremendous amount of its charm. Yet, for those who wish to perfect their lip-synching techniques for movie theater performances or for those who want to gather a crowd around the TV at home for some good, old-fashioned, rowdy fun, this film can't be beat. --Jenny Brown

5 out of 5 stars VERY STRANGE.......2007-06-09

When I first heard about this movie I was extremely skeptical. Later, when I watched clip on the Internet that featured a man dressed in fish-net stockings and a corset, and with heavy makeup, singing about being a "sweet transvestite from transsexual Transylvania", I was even more skeptical. However, I decided to rent it anyway. It was something that would not stop bothering me until I had seen the whole thing.

When the film opened with a pair of large red lips singing about various classic science fiction/horror movies, I wondered what I had gotten myself into. However, as the film progressed, despite the countless disturbing occurrences, I found my self laughing. I even found myself enjoying it. I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but the movie was extremely entertaining and very funny. Something about it is just good. Maybe it's the uniqueness, maybe it's Tim Curry's brilliant acting that pulls it off, maybe it's something else. But whatever it is, this movie is extremely disturbing (probably the most disturbing movie you will ever see), but it is also extremely entertaining and hilarious! You must see this movie at least once in your life.

5 out of 5 stars "Frankly", it's fabulous.......2007-06-03

A line from the trailer says it best..."You've seen all kinds of movies, but you've never seen a movie like The Rocky Horror Picture Show".

Some say it's impossible to enjoy this movie without the audience participation. I disagree. The performances, the music, the costumes, and the dead-on parodies of various horror/sci fi movie clichés are perfectly enjoyable on their own...but, of course, the film lends itself to collective experience in a way none others have before, or since.

All the performers seem to have a sixth sense about how to play their roles - no small feat considering the rather offbeat material - but for me, it's all about Tim Curry. With the wrong actor playing Frank, the film would have crashed and burned (actually, with the wrong actor playing Frank, the original play would never have had a life past its initial run in London's Theatre Upstairs). He became a true film icon with this role, and it's easy to understand why. His performance is a delicate balancing act - feminine flounce with masculine power; outrageous but always controlled. His Frank is gorgeous and unbelievably sexy, with a voice from the gods - both speaking and singing.

I think it's time to do the Time Warp again...

5 out of 5 stars No words can describe.......2007-06-02

You need a certain personality to like this movie. I loved it. The first time I didn't think there was much of a plot to it. Which is the main reason why my friend doesn't like it (How many "comedies" today have not plot? too many). But watching it a second time, I understood it better. The music is amazing. Time Warp is my favorite song. Its bizzare. Everyone should watch this film at least once in their life.

4 out of 5 stars Classic transsexual horror.......2007-06-01

Classic. Kinda cheesy but good. Transvestites from outter space! ;P Trust me it makes more sense after the 2nd watch.

Although it could have been twice as long, this double-DVD set effectively captures over three hours of highlights from one of the most comprehensive and diverse collection of guitarists ever assembled for a single event. Recorded over three days in June of 2004 to benefit Eric Clapton's Crossroads Center in Antigua (as do the sales of this set), the show is not surprisingly heavy on the rootsy blues and country that comprise Clapton's primary inspirations. But it also includes folk (James Taylor), gospel (Robert Randolph & the Family Band), fret-shredding rockers (Steve Vai who delivers a dazzling performance), jazz (John McLaughlin), and, most interestingly, Indian classical music (a stunning piece from Vishwa Mohan Bhatt).

Most compelling are the rare and sometimes unusual collaborations. Joe Walsh and Taylor clown around on "Steamroller Blues," and Booker T. & the M.G.'s back both Joe Walsh on a rollicking "Rocky Mountain Way" and Los Lobos' David Hidalgo tearing into a sizzling "The Neighborhood." Clapton and J.J. Cale share the stage as do Clapton and Carlos Santana, and a show-stopping blues summit with Robert Cray, Jimmie Vaughan, Hubert Sumlin, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, and Clapton is a treat for all involved.

There are some shortcomings. The event isn't presented in chronological order--different stages, days, and backing bands are shuffled with Clapton's own set scattered throughout--ZZ Top's closing is a bit anticlimactic, and there are many omissions due to time constraints. But every act rises to the occasion, and this expertly recorded and shot DVD gives the viewer a front-row seat to a once-in-a-lifetime experience. --Hal Horowitz

Description

In June 2004, some of the greatest living guitar players and their bands gathered at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, for a three-day festival to benefit the Crossroads Centre in Antigua. It was the ultimate concert for any music lover, featuring one legend after the other: Eric Clapton, BB King, Buddy Guy, Eric Johnson, James Taylor, Jimmie Vaughan, Joe Walsh, John Mayer, Robert Cray, Robert Randolph, Santana, ZZ Top, and many more. This 2-DVD set beautifully documents the event and contains over 4 hours of content. Planned extras include in-depth artist interviews, a mini-documentary, photo gallery, alternate angle, and more. Royalties from the DVD sales will benefit the Crossroads Center.

5 out of 5 stars Great Concert Captured on DVD .......2007-04-11

Great concert captured on DVD. Price on Amazon.Com cannot be beaten.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Array of Talent!!.......2007-04-02

Eric Clapton did a fabulous job in organizing a rare collection of guitar talent to perform at this three-day festival in Texas. It is as much a treat to see the legendary bluesmen Buddy Guy and B.B. King onstage with Eric, as it is to see fret-shreddin' Steve Vai, Jimmy Vaughn and Johnny Lang.

The music is blues-based, but many different styles and flavors are present: old-style blues, cultural (Indian), jazz, blues-rock and rock. Although there were time considerations in editing the footage of this CD, the "best of the best" is represented here.

One of the key highlights of this show is Robert Randolph, a new Jersey native, who played the pedal steel guitar in a cross between the styles of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. I have never seen anything like it and he clearly made his mark in this performance, appearing onstage several times.

Some of the tunes were inspirational enough to pick up the guitar, turn on the amp and play along, as some of my favorite musicians played onstage. I would recommend watching in this in 5.1 on a home-theater system, as the presence of the music is much more realized.

I disagree with Amazon's assessment that ZZ Top as a closing act was anti-climactic. The group is monumental in the history of rock and they are at the top of the Texas blues-rock genre. I saw it as befitting to have them close this show, especially in the state of Texas.

FANTASTIC....Some of the best music performed by some of the best musicians around. Enjoyed every minute! !

5 out of 5 stars The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show.......2007-05-24

Old time favorite cartoons - with an edge of adult humour.

5 out of 5 stars Wanna see me pull a rabbit outta my hat?.......2007-05-09

When Rocky & Bullwinkle first aired on network television, I was young enought that I didn't understand the idea of episodic story-telling. --Which really is just as well since R&B's cliff hanger story format tended to stretch a 3 minute story to half a season's worth of shows.

It was only upon watching the full prime-time shows stuck end to end on DVD that I realized that one cliff-hanger did actually lead to the next episode. I just thought it was a bunch of disconnected silly scenes with silly questions and puns used to end an otherwise unending series of gags.

Silly me! It all makes sense now!

And in spite of the frozen background art and clunky animation, R&B are a pleasure to watch and re-watch. The real star of these shows is the writing. It's smart, clever, genuinly witty -- and full of grown-up jokes that match the kid-aged jokes laugh for laugh.

The Fractured Fairy Tales, Mr. KNow-It-All segments, Dudley Do-Right (who has a horse that's more handsome than he is) and Snidley Whiplash, Aesop's (really funny) Fables and their dubious "moral to the story" jokes, the "Way-Back" time machine's history lessons, and the cold war spy vs. spy characters are as sharp and sharp-tongued as they ever were.

And sharper for me now that I'm old enough to follow the plot.

All 3 seasons are as bright and refreshing as their first run on television. Thank heaven for DVDs! Even the nonsense lead-ins to commercials are here -- great stuff!

5 out of 5 stars rocky and bulllwinkle 3d season.......2007-01-04

This is an excellent collection with very good quality reproduction and sound. Well worth it for the true fan and the novice as well.

5 out of 5 stars any word on release of season 4 and 5?.......2007-01-01

Love this show and want to finish my collection but I'm turning old and gray just waiting for season 4 to be released.

Come On! Release, Release, Release...

5 out of 5 stars May the Pun be with You.......2006-01-21

The puns are punnier and the stories are zanier as Rocky and Bullwinkle enter their fun filled third season. It consists of 33 episodes with everyone's favorite animated moose and squirrel as well as their friends and enemies.

The central focus of the show is the continuing exploits of Rocky the Flying Squirrel and Bullwinkle J. Moose. Each episode features two segments of the current serialized story, and there are four of them this time around.

Missouri Mish Mash finds Bullwinkle and Rocky caught in the middle of a feud being run by Boris Badenov, their arch nemesis. However, when Bullwinkle finds a special hat, things really start to get interesting.

Lazy Jay Ranch finds our heroes moving to Wyoming after they buy a ranch. Turns out it's a worm ranch, and Boris has plans of his own for those worms.

The Three Moosketeers brings our heroes to the country of Applesauce Lorraine after the rightful king is replaced by the scheming Francois Villain. (Something tells me he's a bad guy.) Of interest, this is the first Rocky and Bullwinkle story to not feature Boris and his sidekick Natasha Fatale.

Topsy Turvy World finds the world's axis shifting. With the new North Pole on the Equator, it's up to Rocky and Bullwinkle to right the world before Boris gives Santa a bad name.

Of course, each episode also includes several special features. Either a Fractured Fairy Tale or an Aesop and Son (a fable like you've never heard before), Bullwinkle's Corner (poetry and nursery rhymes for laughs) or Mr. Know-it-All (Bullwinkle shows us how NOT to do something), and Peabody's Improbably History (a dog makes sure history goes as recorded) or Dudley Do-Right (a spoof of melodramas set in Canada.)

These shows are absolutely hysterical, if you can stand a good pun. The writers seem to be at the top of their game, with the puns coming so fast you just might miss one. It breaks all the rules of TV with the characters often talking directly to the audience or making references to their TV show, but it only adds to the laughter. While kids will enjoy watching, it's the adults that will get the word play and the now dated historical references.

Of course, being an animated show from the 60's means the animation isn't up to today's standards. Still, it does a good job of getting the story across and holds up to some of today's TV animation.

I was disappointed to recognize many of the Bullwinkle's Corner and Mr. Know-it-All segments this time around. They are recycled from earlier seasons. I don't know why this is, but I hope the fourth season contains new material.

This set consists of four single sided DVD's. The picture and sound are great, although the occasional bit of dust or grain does betray the show's age. Unfortunately, Sony still sees a need to include the clear R&B logo in the lower right hand corner for a minute of each segment. I hardly notice, but when I do it is annoying.

The set this time has a circus theme to the box, booklet, and menus. The booklet contains a funny biography of villains Boris and Natasha. Also this time around, the booklet contains information on the Bullwinkle's Corner and Mr. Know-it-All segments, something that's been missing in previous sets.

Extras are light. They include some third season intros from the Bullwinkle puppet (including the infamous one where he tells kids to rip off their TV's knobs so they won't miss the next episode), a preview of the next season, and some "best of" moments from the season.

While the extras aren't a reason to buy the set, the shows themselves are still as punny as they were over forty years ago. Anyone with a fond memory of the show and a strong constitution for puns will love it.

Now here's something you don't see everyday, Chauncey. It's the complete first season of one of television's smartest, savviest, and most subversively funny animated series, ranked by TV Guide as one of the top 50 series of all time. Like the animators at Warner Bros.' Termite Terrace (birthplace of Porky, Daffy, and Bugs), producer Jay Ward, his partner Bill Scott (the voice of Bullwinkle), and the cracked writing staff did not write down to children. The dialogue is witty and sharply satiric. Characters break the "fourth wall" between the screen and the audience. They make sly references to the show's creators and the television network. They hurl barbs of mass destruction at Washington, D.C. politicians. And then there are the godawful puns. This four-disc set contains the series' first two serial adventures. "Jet Fuel Formula" is a cold war-era blast, as Rocky (voiced by June Foray, the Queen of Cartoons) and Bullwinkle frantically race to re-create a rocket fuel recipe (actually Grandma Bullwinkle's recipe for mooseberry fudge cake), while being menaced by those no-goodniks Boris Badenov and femme fatale Natasha. "Box Top Robbery" reveals that the basis for the world's economy is not gold and silver, but cereal box tops.

Linking these cliffhanging episodes are such hilarious segments as "Fractured Fairy Tales," which upend familiar storybook favorites (Red Riding Hood, for example, is a predatory fur merchant after the unwitting wolf), "Mr. Peabody," the canine genius who travels through time in the company of his boy, Sherman, and forthright Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties, who must contend with his own horse for the affections of sweet Nell. Bullwinkle gets extra credits as Mr. Know-It-All and as the host of Poetry Corner. And watch him pull a rabbit out of his hat! These cartoons are as fresh and funny as when they first aired more than four decades ago. Boomer-era adults will be amazed at the jokes that no doubt soared over their heads as children. --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars Funnier now than 40 years ago.......2007-03-21

The purists can argue the merits of the changes until they're blue in the face, I've been too busy laughing my tush off to worry about it.

The irreverent humor and biting political commentary, both of which have only improved with age make this more fun for me than it is for my 8 y/o who thinks Rocky and Bullwinkle are the greatest animation on the planet.

5 out of 5 stars rocky and bullwinkle joy.......2007-01-12

This is one of the finest DVD set that I have. The obscure references, the pun's, and the characters are some of the best of early sixties cartoons. One of the best features is that the episodes are shown complete as they were aired. Have already bought season two and am planning on buying season three as soon as I get done with season one. Buy and enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars Rocky & Bullwinkle & Friends - complete first season .......2007-01-11

PURCHASED THIS FILM FOR MY BROTHER-IN LAW WHO IS A BIG FAN OF ROCKY & BULLWINKLE. WE SAT AND WATCHED IT WITH HIM AND ENJOYED THE SHOWS AS WELL AS THE MEMORIES. WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE PURCHASE OF THE SECOND SEASON LATER ON. IT GIVES A LOT OF PLEASURE TO MY BROTHER-IN LAW AS WELL AS MY FAMILY.

4 out of 5 stars Same old Moose and Squirrel.......2006-10-30

I purchased this set as a gift for my husband. It's a great way to watch all of the old cartoons we both watched as children. We are second generation fans, and being so neither of us realized there is a story line to follow with each of the short skits. It's been wonderful watching them in the order they were made and understanding the whole story. Plus, the humor is even more interesting now that we are older and understand some of the political implications and satire we missed as kids. Two thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars This was an enjoyable purchase........2006-10-28

I do not have much to say other than this was a great purchase. I got this dvd set on a whim because I really liked the way the packaging looked. I was not that familiar with R&B but I knew enough. After watching all of the episodes I was amazed, this is a great show and I would recommend it for anyone! Plus the packaging is really nice :^) I have season two and plan to begin watching it as soon as I can. Buy this set if you love clever stories and dialogue with wonderfully bad animation. That sounds cheesy but this is fun cheese.

This four-disc set contains seven full-length serials, several of which loom large in the Rocky & Bullwinkle canon, including "Upsidasium," "Metal Munching Mice," and "Greenpernt Oogle," with the rare, reclusive oogle bird (sorry, you'll have to wait until the release of season 3 for the Kirwood Derby).

Perhaps emboldened by what they were able to get away with in season 1, producer Jay Ward, writer and the voice of Bullwinkle Bill Scott, Queen of Cartoons June Foray, "and a host of others," gleefully further broke with television convention. Rocky & Bullwinkle was at once very silly (for the kids) and slyly satirical (for mom and dad). Characters broke the fourth wall ("Don't look at me," a villain insists at one point, "I'm not giving up the plot"). Corporate America (television executives in particular) was mocked. In "Metal Munching Mice," news that robotic rodents are devouring television antennae causes panic when it is realized that the public are unable to watch commercials. And then there are the subversively funny "Fractured Fairy Tales," in which Puss 'n Boots gets skinned, Red Riding Hood is devoured, and no one lives happily ever after, and the time-travel adventures of cultured canine Mr. Peabody and his boy Sherman, in which historical figures are revealed to be boobs. Just for laughs, there is the faux melodrama of forthright Mounty Dudley Do-Right, and the Bullwinkle segments, "Bullwinkle's Corner" and "Mr. Know It All." Still crazy after all these years, Rocky & Bullwinklerises like the anti-gravity Upsidasium above mere nostalgia. Like The Simpsons, this series rewards viewers who pay attention, and invites repeat viewings to catch all the jokes you missed. --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars Be proud, fellow baby-boomers!.......2007-06-29

Even in this age of tremendous animation geared specifically not for children, (Simpsons, King of the Hill, Family Guy, etc. . . .) The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show still has to be rated as one of the all time great adult cartoons. Creator and master-mind Jay Ward had a unique sense of humor that was two-part silly surrealism and one part subtle-yet-caustic sarcasm. He did not seem capable of writing down to a cartoon audience, and he always assumed everyone got the joke (and, amazingly enough, tons of baby boomers did, along with their Korean-War generation parents).

The animation was, to be kind, stylized (not even quite as good as the "limited animation" of the great Hanna-Barbara cartoons of the 1960's), but what these cartoons lacked in lush graphics and great backgrounds, they more than made up for in great comic writing and imagination. Season Two had some of the most memorable flights of brilliance like "Metal Munching Mice" - a 16-episode jaunt that had six-foot metal "moon mice" bent on destroying America by devouring television antennas. "Upsidasium," another season-two classic, spanned a whopping 36 episodes and revolved around the anti-gravity metal, Upsidasium, sought after by all governments of the world (a tremendous and playful riff on the nuclear paranoia of the late 1950's and early 1960's). And what baby boomer didn't love all the additional special features ("And now here's something we hope you really like.") like Fractured Fairy Tales, Dudley Do-Right, Aesop's Fables, and (my personal favorite) Peabody's Improbable History.

Yet, finally, what made these cartoons historic in their greatness was the staggering alignment of vocal talent. Bill Scott was the voice of Bullwinkle and June Foray (the all time champ of female voice actors) supplied the voice for not only Rocky but also for Natasha, Nell Fenwick, and many and many additional voices. Then there was the great Paul Frees doing Boris, Captain Peachfuzz, Cloyd the Moon Man, and Inspector Fenwick.

The list goes on: Hans Conried (Snidely Whiplash), Walter Tetley (Sherman), Charles Ruggles (Aesop), and Jullie Bennett (all the odd female voices in Fractured Fairy Tales that Foray didn't do, like The Fisherman's Wife). This show even had the greatest vocal talent ever, Daws Butler, on board doing the voice of Aesop Jr. in the Aesop`s Fables feature.

All in all, the greatest alignment of vocal talent ever assembled. Do not miss it. Any season of this classic television treasure will do. --- Mykal Banta

5 out of 5 stars Rife with happy nostalgic, wholesome fun.......2007-03-14

These DVDs are of excellent quality and value, hours and hours of the pun and double entendre filled humor this truly innovative kids' program brought to early TV audiences. I watched the shows 50 years ago and enjoy them as much today as my parents did then. Why, you ask? The humor was bi-level in age appeal. Kids enjoyed the good guy-bad guy antics of Rocky and Bullwinkle vs. Boris and Natasha while parents reveled in the creative, wholesome and usually silly parables. The additional episodes of Fractured Fairy Tales, Dudley Do-right of the Mounties, Mr. Peabody and Sherman (A Dog and His Boy), who time travel to experience improbable history lessons make this collection priceless. You'll definitely want the first season as well.

5 out of 5 stars Rocky and Bullwinkle Season 2 and 3 .......2006-11-04

I just missed seeing them since the 70's and 80's when I loved every week sitting in front of the TV waiting to see what happened next. It is a Great DVD to revisit your Childhood. And even good clean Cartoons for kids today instead of all the Viloince and Rudeness they seem to play. Hope everyone young and old checks these DVD's out they are great for the Decade they were made.

5 out of 5 stars Nothin up my sleeve.......2006-04-17

These old R & B cartoons are the best. The DVD's are very clear and have all the episodes in order. Jay ward was at his best here. I wish they would release his other stuff on DVD like george of the jungle with super chicken and tom slick. I would buy those as quick as I did the R & B seasons. I also have season 3 and its great too. Can't wait for season 4. Come on guys give us george of the jungle too.

This is an AWESOME movie! I've looked for it everywhere and yes, I may be silly for saying this was an awesome movie, but I was a kid when it came out so, blame that! Quick shipping, perfect quality! Will definitely buy from these guys again!

4 out of 5 stars Movie Review.......2007-05-09

If you love Super Mario, then this is the movie for you. It's a live action movie staring the Mario Brothers!

3 out of 5 stars This Ain't No Game!.......2007-04-27

Let's face facts, the 90s had its weird moments and continual adaptations of games and tv shows was a common trend as much as it is now then. The exception is the adaptations were a lot looser.

In this case, SUPER MARIO BROS. makes a unique adjustment in that it stretches the game series into a different world and tone. Given it's been a while since I've seen it after watching it again for the first time in a while, I find that the movie has some fairly decent character moments, but at the same time. I find myself wondering how it is that they mixed all the concepts of the game together and came out with this.

It's not the best movie in the world, but it's fun for what it is.

2 out of 5 stars "Super Mario Brothers"--okay film, disappointing DVD.......2007-04-07

I don't really know what to think about this movie. I admit, it was very entertaining and wacky and sometimes even witty, but I'm scratching my head in wondering why the filmmakers didn't make this film a tiny bit closer to the videogame.
The actors who portrayed Mario and Luigi (whose mustache is absent from this film) were, for the most part, good. The special effects were convincing, and the cheesy humor worked actually very well.
But I'm confused. King Koopa is a human (!). This is probably an excuse to include Dennis Hopper, who appeared in almost one hundred movies in the 1990s (and I'm not kidding). The minions had weird shrunken lizard heads. Princess Peach, the classic damsel-in-distress, is replaced with Daisy. Almost everything in the film is the opposite of the videogame. The only real thing that actually resembles a character from the original game was the Bomb-Omb (or whatever it was called--I'm blanking out on the name...).
Anyhoo, "Super Mario Brothers" was just okay. It was entertaining and fun, but too much that we know and love from the video-game is missing, and that kind of distracts you from the experience. Hopefully, in years to come, a REAL "Super Mario Brothers" movie will be released--one that captures the spirit and the imagination of the videogame that inspires it.
I'm also wondering why there were absolutely no bonus features on this DVD. Maybe some behind-the-scenes footage or deleted scenes, but no. Perhaps a future two-disc anniversary edition will remedy this (though it's doubtful).

5 out of 5 stars Hardly like the games but still good.......2007-04-05

I thought this was a great film. I admit it's different from the games. I wasn't born when the movie came out but I rented it. The film is a little weird at times. Like that evolution thing. The special effects are convincing enough. There's something I don't get. The film was relaesed in 1993. That's the same year jurassic park was released and it used cgi. So was this film made before CGI or what? If it did use cgi that would have been great! The idea of changing Bowser from a fire breathing monster into a human is silly. The film would have looked better if it was animated like the tv series so the can animate the enimies which would be easier. Too bad there isn't a sequel. It would have been nice.

The dialogue is laughable, and the plot is by the numbers. But if you're a surfer (or an armchair surfer), this ultra-silly movie may prove hard to resist. It's the one about the kid from Arizona (Matt Adler), who's surfed only on artificial waves in that landlocked state, coming out to spend his last free summer hitting the serious water of Hawaii. He falls in with a mystical surf guru (Gregory Harrison), one of those surf-Zen masters obsessed with the cosmic significance of hanging ten, but he's also tempted by the flashier stunts of the younger surf crowd. Oh, and the Arizona kid also gets romantic with the prettiest girl on Oahu (Nia Peeples), which precipitates trouble with her resentful native family. If the story's no winner, the surfing action is excellent, with many real-life surfers contributing their talents. For shredders, a guilty pleasure. --Robert Horton

The two biggest reasons to get this movie: 1. Turtle and 2. the soundtrack. The surfing scenes are great. You will never find a movie that tries so little to be good and ends up being so great.

5 out of 5 stars The film of my dreams.......2007-01-25

this film is really beautifful, the history is wonderful, and at this moment i've not received that yet, so i'm really exciting for receive and see again tha Rick Kane's and kiany's love history.

4 out of 5 stars 'Rudy' Meets 'Gidget' (sort of).......2006-12-16

This is a cheesy 80's movie that was released at the height of the neo-surf craze in the 1980's. Unfortunately, I fell victim to that. Still, it's funny to see this movie- a time when Town & Country Surf Designs and Quiksilver reigned supreme.

This movie tells the story of Rick Kane (Matt Adler), a surfer from Tempe, Arizona, who decides to travel to Hawaii to conquer the 'monster' waves of the North Shore (filmed on location in Hawaii) before he heads to art school in New York in the fall. Rick thinks he has the skills to surf the North Shore after winning a surf contest in a simulated wave tank. Unlilke the proverbial 'fish out of water,' Rick soons finds that he is an unwelcome fish in water, and he's in over his head.

When he arrives in Hawaii, Rick meets a couple of surfers who teach him a few things- one of them being that he's not ready to surf the North Shore (great cinematography); however, Rick continues to insist he can surf with the best. Instead, Rick learns that the waves of the North Shore are nothing like the simulated waves of Arizona. After a run-in with the locals (the Hui), Rick learns that 'haoles' like him are not welcome in Hawaii and that he'd better stay out of the locals' way both on land and in the water.

Soon after, young Rick meets a local named Turtle, who introduces him to Chandler (Gregory Harrison), a local surfer and surfboard maker who has accepted the customs of the locals and their culture. Under the guidance and tutelage of Chandler (kind of like Yoda training Luke Skywalker), Rick gradually learns to surf. More importantly, though, Rick learns that true surfers are out on the waves because they love it out there, not because they seek fame and fortune. Rick also happens to meet a local girl named Kiani (Nia Peeples- hot!) who is sympathetic to Rick and helps him feel more comfortable during his stay in Hawaii.

As Rick gets better, he captures the attention of a local surf photographer who convinces him to enter the Pipeline Classic. This provides Rick the opportunity to compete with the world's best surfers even though entering the contest conflicts with Chandler's philosophy of being a 'Soul Surfer.' Still, Rick enters the contest and soon finds himself in competition with Lance Burkhart, his one-time hero.

Will Rick have enough skill to beat Lance Burkhart and achieve his dream of surfing fame? I guess you'll have to stay loose, barney, and watch the whole movie.

5 out of 5 stars Brah, You So Haole...........2006-11-07

i cant add anything to the other 75 comments... back in the day, this was a cheesy B movie filmed in hawaii. we all watched it cause nia peeples was a HOTTIE! being born and raised here, we all made fun of the cheesy lines by repeating them incessantly. now the lines are classic and part of the local pidgin. turtle was everyone's favorite character cause he sounds like a typical haole trying to act local. our favorite line was "brah, you so haole, you no even know you haole" - turtle. my favorite word which i still use today... "KOOK."

i quoted turtle today (adapted to the person) "you're so clueless, you dont event know you're clueless." i had to explain the movie which led to me realizing, THIS IS A MUST HAVE CULT DVD FOR THE COLLECTION. the 18 year old girl whom i called clueless said she just read turtle's line on someone's surfboard (19 years after the movie was released!!). CLASSIC!!!
