You could only see his eyes behind the layers of makeup, but those expressive orbs earned John Hurt a well-deserved Oscar nomination for his moving portrayal of John Merrick, the grotesquely deformed Victorian-era man better known as The Elephant Man. Inarticulate and abused, Merrick is the virtual slave of a carnival barker (Freddie Jones) until dedicated London doctor Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins in a powerfully understated performance) rescues him from the life and offers him an existence with dignity. Anne Bancroft costars as the actress whose visit to Merrick makes him a social curiosity, with John Gielgud and Wendy Hiller as dubious hospital staffers won over by Merrick. David Lynch earned his only Oscar nominations as director and cowriter of this somber drama, which he shot in a rich black-and-white palette, a sometimes stark, sometimes dreamy visual style that at times recalls the offbeat expressionism of his first film, Eraserhead. It remains a perfect marriage between traditional Hollywood historical drama and Lynch's unique cinematic eye, a compassionate human tale delivered in a gothic vein. The film earned eight Oscar nominations in all, and though it left the Oscar race empty-handed, its dramatic power and handsome yet haunting imagery remain just as strong today. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful movie.......2007-06-06

A movie that truly touches your heart, Mr Merrick is the sweetest person I've ever seen in a movie. It's hard not to cry when you watch this movie.
The acting is superb and it's obvious a lot of work was put into the make-up and costumes. This is a must see.

5 out of 5 stars Sad...beautiful..moving...well made.........2007-04-30

This is probably David Lynch's most "normal" movie and maybe most mainstream and he did a remarkable job. This movie is sad and gets to me every time I watch it.For younger people it would seem boring to them because this isn't a horror movie and the movie does take its time, but that's the point. You get to know the characters and the only "monster" or "monsters" in this movie are the ones that mistreat and abuse John Merrick.Sometimes it's hard to watch only because this is a true story and all the abuse he went through. For the fact,he was this smart and beautiful human being underneath, but he had this horrible disease...Great acting all around.

5 out of 5 stars One of the great film masterpieces, and the most moving thing I've ever seen.......2007-03-09

David Lynch is quite possibly the most underappreciated director in cinematic history. Time and time again he has crafted baffling, fascinatingly intricate works of art that time and time again have been shunned by critics too small-minded to appreciate the beauty of Lynch's films. Still, there is one that was universally acknowledged as the masterwork it is: THE ELEPHANT MAN, Lynch's finest work. In 1979, impressed by Lynch's horrifying debut ERASERHEAD, Mel Brooks hired Lynch to direct a cinematic telling of the tale of Joseph Merrick, frequently mistakenly referred to as "John", a mistake repeated in this film. With only one prior film under his belt, David Lynch crafted a masterpiece that ranks among the very finest films ever made, as well as the single most moving thing I have ever seen.

Anthony Hopkins portrays Dr. Frederick Treves, a young and ambitious surgeon at the London Hospital who hears talk of a hideously deformed man being showcased at a local freakshow as "The Elephant Man". Recognizing a potential subject for fascinating research, Treves takes the man from his horridly-abusive "business partner" (Freddie Jones) and places him the London Hospital. Though the hospital staff is, naturally, initially opposed to the idea (do we not fear what we do not understand?), they gradually warm to the "Elephant Man" when Treves discovers, to everyone's immense shock, that the man is in fact a very intelligent and polite 21-year-old Englishman named John Merrick (John Hurt). Treves and Merrick become close friends while Treves studies Merrick's terrible disease, but though the public comes to see Merrick as a sort of hero, there are still those all too willing to treat him as a freak.

THE ELEPHANT MAN is one of the few cinematic masterpieces with a story as captivating as the film itself. The story is very historially accurate, as is the makeup for John Merrick. No doubt this is a major reason of why THE ELEPHANT MAN is so profoundly tragic a film - it all happened. It's all real. Angry mobs did chase that poor, kind soul, and sleazy, utterly despicable rats of men did exploit his misfortune for their own profit. He was abused, and ridiculed, and yet through it all he remained upbeat, and a heartbreakingly intelligent and polite young man. Though his face is hidden beneath layer upon layer of makeup, John Hurt's performance as Merrick is excellent, and though "wonderful" would be a fitting adjective, it just doesn't seem right for this circumstance.

Anthony Hopkins delivers what may the finest performance of his career, possibly surpassed only by his legendary performance as Hannibal Lecter in Demme's THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. His character is admirably set on doing what's right and touchingly and sincerely caring for Mr. Merrick. In the scene in which Hopkins first encounters Merrick in a basement, he looks absolutely heartbroken and sheds one single, streaming tear; this may very well be one of the greatest scenes in movie history.

Heading up the supporting cast is Anne Bancroft, playing a beautiful actress who immediately befriends Merrick. A testament to the movie's power is that we feel like we know these characters, particularly Bancroft. We do not root for her character; we appreciate and are grateful for her kind attitude toward Mr. Merrick.

As wonderful as the actors are, this film could simply not exist without the masterful directing of David Lynch. Though this is one of his more linear works, it is still distinctly Lynchian, from the surreal opening sequence to the marvelously poetic finish. Those who were bold enough to endure ERASERHEAD may notice that THE ELEPHANT MAN feels like a sort of companion piece to that film. Both films were shot in a sort of nightmarish black-and-white, both films feature an enhanced soundtrack highlighting the sound of the wind whisping and mechanical clunks in the background, and both films highlight industrial settings and workers. Lynch's attention to every single detail, no matter how seemingly unimportant or simple, his appreciation for every little thing in life, is a perfect fit for this film. Though he may have made films more fascinating or deep, David Lynch never made one finer than THE ELEPHANT MAN, his own gothic, romantic tragedy.

Another aspect that will remain in viewers' minds well after the film's end is Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings", one of the most provoking and sorrowfully beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard, which was similarly used six years later in Oliver Stone's PLATOON. "Adagio" is the song that plays through the film's final moments, and it is the ultimate opus for John Merrick. I guarantee that after seeing this film, your eyes will tear whenever "Adagio for Strings" is played.

Though it will always be one of film's great tragedies that David Lynch never receives the praise he so rightly deserves, it is fitting that at least one of his films, Lynch's own handmade tragedy, received the attention it deserved. Although the film was (unsurprisingly) unrecognized in the 1981 Academy Awards, THE ELEPHANT MAN has come to be regarded as one of the finest films ever made. It is indeed one of the all-time great cinematic masterpieces, and Lynch's masterwork. I doubt that I will ever encounter anything that will move me so profoundly as Joseph Merrick and David Lynch's tale of THE ELEPHANT MAN.

5 out of 5 stars The True Story of Humanity.......2007-03-03

This film is based on the true story of John Merrick, a carnival sideshow freak known as "The Elephant Man" Anthony Hopkins stars as Dr. Treves, the physcian go shows John Merrick humanity & John Hurt stars in the title role. It's one of the most passionate & depressing movies of all time, a powerful & sad character study, a masterpiece that is a must see. The story of a man who got to live as a human being after being treated like an animal.

5 out of 5 stars It broke my heart.......2007-02-20

I first saw The Elephant Man on HBO in 1981 at 10:30 in the morning. Everyone in my family wanted to know why I was crying after it was over. I told them they had to see it themselves so we watched it again at 8:00 that night. When it was over my mother and I were crying outright and my dad and brother had tears in their eyes. We had a long discussion about what it must have been like for John Merrick, wanting only to be like other people but knowing that it would never happen. The movie had such a profound effect on me. I bagan to view other people in a different light and came to see people for what they were like on the inside, not the outside. This is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. The actors, especially John Hurt, are brilliant. The use of Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings was inspired. I still can't hear that piece of music without crying (while watching a British memorial service for the 9/11 victims they played this song.) I feel very sorry for anyone who watches this remarkable movie and comes away untouched. It has a deep message that all of us should embrace.

Shot on the streets of Kingston and set to a rich reggae score by Sly and Robbie, the highest-grossing film in Jamaican cinema (according to the producers) is a simple cops-and-gangsters thriller that drops the usual two-fisted cop clichés into the slums of a Third World reality. Charismatic Paul Campbell (who starred in the previous Jamaican hit Dancehall Queen) is Capone, a Jamaican Dirty Harry who wades into shootouts with both guns blazing. His maverick reputation lands him in Kingston, his hometown, where he tracks a gun-smuggling scheme to his boyhood friend Ratty (Mark Danvers), now the ambitious right-hand man to the local kingpin. It's a familiar story and the timid script always chooses action over drama. Capone's violent methods are never questioned, even when he's faced with old friends instead of faceless hoods, and he's given unimaginable leeway to shoot his way through the criminal population. Shot on digital video and released to theaters in a smeary-looking transfer, the video release is mastered from the digital source and looks infinitely better than its theatrical incarnation: crisp, bright, and vivid. The energetic style helps the picture overcome some of its generic cop-movie clichés, but the real draw is the street grit of clapboard houses, corrugated metal fences, and concrete brick homes: the matter-of-fact poverty of Kingston's slums. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars a review of a review.......2007-04-20

This is simply in response to the latest review made by "a viewer" about this film. I, quite simply, feel that the review has a level of narrow-mindedness about the film and recommend not basing your choice on their review. To state "do the world a favor and get rid of them" as well as saying that these criminals are "irredeemable and beyond any rehabilitation" is very prejudiced. The lack of restorative justice and the inability to find an effective deterrent is not necessarily the fault of the people who commit criminal acts, but is that of the state. Before saying that you wish that the cop was there to "take care of the hustlers and muggers that prey upon innocent visitors in (otherwise beautiful) places like Montego Bay and Negril" you should try to question why these muggers and hustlers even exist. Could it be because of the travler's presence in itself? Anyway, I do not believe that you can justify killing criminals to satisfy your own traveling enjoyment. It is reasons such as this that people who do lead a path of criminality do not get the appropriate attention and rehabilitation. Try questioning the methods of the state and not the 'hopelessness' of criminals. I recommend this movie, it's an A+. Just do not watch it with the mindset that this last reviewer quite narrowly insists.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Must-See for Anyone Planning to Visit Jamaica!.......2004-03-28

This movie shows an absolutely accurate portrayal of Jamaican society, and the sheer lawlessness and criminality inherent there. I have been to Jamaica and the law-and-order situation there is to be seen to be believed. It is like a war zone in most places. It is impossible to walk even a few steps without being harassed and intimidated by drug-pushers, pimps, prostitutes, etc. Some reviewers have complained about Capone the policeman's apparent trigger-happiness, but you have to realize that most of these criminals are irredeemable and beyond any rehabilitation, so he really did not have any other choice (if he wanted to stay alive himself and if there is to be any hope for Jamaica) than to do the world a favor and get rid of them. I just wish he'd been there to take care of the hustlers and muggers that prey upon innocent visitors in (otherwise beautiful) places like Montego Bay and Negril.

4 out of 5 stars highly recommended.......2003-01-18

This is a great movie, especially if you like "Dancehall Queen". Paul Campbell does a great job as Capone and Carl Bradshaw is excellent as usual as the crime boss. While the story is somewhat generic it is still well worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Dancehall Queen!.......2002-07-12

I bought this video because it had some of the same actors as "Dancehall Queen" and boy did I get my monies worth! I like that Paul Campbell, the bad guy in "Dancehall Queen", is the hero in "Third World Cop". I enjoyed the interplay of action, drama, and comedy. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoyed "Dancehall Queen" and does not mind some non-graphic violence.

3 out of 5 stars Great Show - Terrible DVD Setup.......2007-04-11

There's no doubt that you will almost die laughing while watching these Kung Faux DVDs. They're smart, witty, and so unexpected. However my main complaint is that there are COMMERCIALS! Yes, commercials! Advertisements for various products run two to three times within one episode and then there's about 5-10 minutes of commercials between each episode. Another problem is that there is only two episodes on each DVD, which would be extremly pricey if you paid the full $17.99 Amazon asks for each of the 5 DVDs. I suppose you could say the many extras on the disc make up for there only being two episodes but spending $90 to own the complete series is outrageous!

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely FUNNY!.......2006-06-20

When I was first introduced to this DVD, as a birthday gift, with the disclaimer: 'You're going to really dig this', I was instatly hooked the moment the first episode started. After the first 2 minutes I was laughing so hard, tears streamed from my eyes. The hip-hop element and street slang, wrapped around a kung fu movie is brilliant! This is the MOST "original" display of cinematography I have ever seen. The video game setting, mixed with a comic book style and the re-telling of classic karate flicks is something to see! I'm hooked! The first episode "Ill Master" is so funny, that I have watched this no less than a dozen times; only to see/hear something I missed previously. THANK YOU Tommyboy Films for an awesome product!

5 out of 5 stars Kung Faux is Cutting Edge Comedy, Classic Cuts, & Kung Fu!.......2005-11-26

Man if you love comic books, classic cuts of music from the golden age of hip hop, kung fu flicks, & video games,
this TV series will put you on seventh heaven for real.

The dialogue is so fresh and so funny and so fly with bumping tracks, it feels like something that has been around for years while also feeling somehow new each time I watch it, and I can't say that about much of anything except maybe the movies "Sin City" or "Kung Fu Hustle", but "Kung Faux" kills them when it comes to scoring with massive tracks from artists like "De La Soul", "Grooverider", & "Stetsasonic".

I can't wait to own the whole seires on dvd and I love that is finally being released.

Now they just need to start releasing some soundtracks on CD from the series for me to be ready to die happy.-chuuurch!

    5 out of 5 stars Yo! That's My Word!.......2006-06-12

Let me preface this by stating that I grew up watching the films of the Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest, so I am a major Kung Fu movie fan and collector. Kung Faux however is not traditional "chop socky" fair. It actually makes fun of some of the less than excellent flicks that I saw as a child in the "grind houses" and on television in the late 70's and early 80's. So if your looking for traditional Old School Kung Fu movies, you must look elsewhere (many of the Shaw Brothers classics have been remastered by a company called Celestial Pictures and are available from various vendors online. You will need a multi-region DVD player to view them though as the ones with English subtitles are produced for regions other than region 1).

Now that that's out of the way, let me tell you, I've been waiting forever for this particular volume of Kung Faux to drop. Outside of "Box Cutta", "Pinky" is my favorite episode of Kung Faux. Not only is "Pinky" funny but it is also daring. They took a big chance with that episode by calling a character a Spanish slang term for the female anatomy (which somehow got by the censors). It adds a whole other level of humour if you get the in-joke but it's still funny if you do not. Jean Grae is excellent as the voice of Pinky as well. If you are a fan of the Old School Kung Fu flicks and don't mind laughing again at some of the bad ones, get this. THAT'S MY WORD!

5 out of 5 stars Twice as nice for half the price!.......2005-12-30

I have been waiting for this damn release of Kung Faux Volume 2 for over two years and I even resorted to buying a copy off of some questionable website for about twice the price in what was obviously a tv to pc "do it yourself" copy job that someone did of the episodes featured on this volume, but man I just couldn't wait that long for another dose of "Mini Lee", but i am making up for it by buying this official copy as soon as it hits the streets.- Now if they would just hurry the hell up with Volume 3, 4, & 5 so I can fix my jones for these damn things!

Please release more Kung Faux dvds!

I have been waiting so long for "Volume 2" to come out that I made the mistake of buying another dvd that someone said might quench my thirst for "Kung Faux".

Amazon recommended something called "Volcano High" that was a complete piece of trash and a total rip off & let down.

And, it made me realize even how much more I love "Kung Faux" and will likely never be able to replace it with something else.

So, please, please, please! Release more episodes on dvd before i have an anxiety attack!-I am not kidding.

    4 out of 5 stars Ill Master.......2005-07-25

I first saw Kung Faux about a year ago, perhaps longer. I just NOW got the DVD for it...I will tell anyone who hasn't seen it yet that it's absolutely rediculous, but just as entertaining. If you have a good sense of humor and can laugh at the word "Nikka," when it's used that the end of a sentence, then go buy this movie. I just wish volume 2-6 were released, i can seem to find them anywhere

The only draw backs is the commercials that appear while you are watching the episodes. Other than that it's all worth it...

5 out of 5 stars POSSIBLY THE GREATEST TV SHOW EVER !!!.......2005-07-19

The Miami Herald says Kung Faux is "possibly the greatest tv show ever!" and I couldn't agree more.

My TIVO is full of the censored epiosdes from the FUSE and AZN tv channels and I love that I can now get them uncensored on dvd then put them on my new PSP.

I also love all of the little surprises that they drop in between the episodes on dvd like the hip hop music video from Sweden and hot girls from GAME. They are like the surprises you get in a box of Cracker Jacks or something.

I have already signed up to the email list at [...]for the rest of the dvds in the series. I wish more TV was like this.

5 out of 5 stars Pity the clueless & close minded, for ignorance is bliss........2005-07-07

For some people, hip hop slang sounds like a foreign language,...like when they here someone say "he done messed up my doobie dun" or " i gots to get my shape up yo"...all they hear is are a bunch of words that make no sense to them,... and for others kung fu films are only good to them if they are seeing exactly what they have seen a thousand times before with a overly carbon copied soundtrack and 80 minutes of filler spread out between a few minutes of fight scenes here and there.

If this sounds like you then don't get this dvd, just order yourself another scoop of vanilla ice cream from somewhere else.

But if you love comic book style video game graphic effects, the wordplay of Rap lyrics, the subversive intelligent humor found in the brains of hip hop music artists from around the world & can understand what they are saying or at least mean, as well as wall to wall fight scenes but not the boring parts of old kung fu movies, then this is the dvd for you.

This is the realist, funniest thing that I have seen in a long long time, and the music is incredible...the fight scenes alone scored to thumping tracks from De La Soul, Naughty By Nature, & Queen Latifah or worth the price...They have a "karaoke" game function on the dvd that allows you to mute the dialogue but keep the music and I find myself playing this all of the time as booming background music while I am working it is that good.

It should be noted that this is not an entire season of episodes on one dvd,...it is actually two "uncensored" episodes from the first season plus a bunch of short movies, promo trailers, and music videos that are also pretty interesting, which make it run around 90 minutes long very much like an "Anime" DVD.

I have to say that I think "Anime" is more like what this "Kung Faux" dvd should be compared to, not a classic kung fu movie or some throw away hip hop gimmick.

It requires a certain amount of willingness for the viewer to give into this new environment infused with fast paced color and music and expanded vocabulary, and I don't know about you, but I enjoyed the challenge and experience of learning and discovering something new while being entertained, and I was almost glad that there wasn't a whole bunch of episodes on one disc, because with so much to take in on this dvd, I think I might have gotten a brain overload if I watched too many of them in a row.

I pity the clueless & close minded of you who chose to (...) rather than enjoy this dvd because like most things in your life...it is all probably just too far over your head to comprehend and requires more knowledge of pop culture and brain power than you can muster, so you will never have the opportunity to laugh and enjoy this dvd like I have, but like they say..."ignorance is bliss", and the world needs dumbos like you to keep the crap flowing, because god forbid a mass majority demand intelligent humor , because that would kill off the vast majority of brain dead nuggets being pooped out by the majority of entertainment companies in the world today and sink it for everyone...so you keep hating kids, while others like me find salvation in our little boxes of goodness like "Kung Faux".
