This gimmicky film noir stars Humphrey Bogart as an escaped criminal who undergoes plastic surgery and holes up at the home of Lauren Bacall's character while healing and preparing to prove his innocence. If you can last through the first half-hour of this thing--which is shot entirely from the subjective view of Bogart's bandaged face, which we don't see until later--you might find ample reason in the stars' performances to stick around for the conclusion. But director Delmer Daves (A Summer Place) tests a viewer's endurance with such an obvious, attention-getting ploy. The least of the Bogart-Bacall vehicles (The Big Sleep,To Have and Have Not, Key Largo). --Tom Keogh

Yes, it's true: you can virtually see Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall falling for each other in To Have and Have Not (1945), Howard Hawks's variation on Casablanca but adapted from--as legend has it--Ernest Hemingway's self-declared "worst novel." (The story goes that Hawks told Hemingway he could make a movie of the author's least work, and Hemingway gave him the rights to this story.) The script by William Faulkner and Jules Furthman actually makes this one of Hawks's and Bogart's most interesting and often exciting films. Bogart plays a boat captain who reluctantly agrees to help the French Resistance while wooing chanteuse Bacall. Hoagy Carmichael, wry at the piano, adds a delicious accent to an already wonderful mood.
Bogart and Bacall were never more popular than in The Big Sleep, the 1946 adaptation of Raymond Chandler's novel, directed by Howard Hawks. Bogart plays private eye Philip Marlowe, who is hired by a wealthy socialite (Bacall) to look into troubles stirred up by her wild, young sister (Martha Vickers). Legendarily complicated (so much so that even Chandler had trouble following the plot), the film is nonetheless hugely entertaining and atmospheric, an electrifying plunge into the exotica of detective fiction. William Faulkner wrote the screenplay.
Dark Passage (1947) is a gimmicky film noir starring Bogart as an escaped criminal who undergoes plastic surgery and holes up at the home of Bacall's character while healing and preparing to prove his innocence.
John Huston (The Maltese Falcon) directed Key Largo (1948), a smart thriller about a gangster (Edward G. Robinson) who holds a number of people hostage in a hotel in the Florida Keys during a tropical storm. Bogart is the returning war veteran who takes on the villains, and Bacall is on hand as one of the people on the wrong end of Robinson's gun. Somewhat similar in tone to To Have and Have Not this moody movie captures a certain despair offset by the bond between individuals united by common purpose. Claire Trevor won an Academy Award for her part as Robinson's alcoholic girlfriend. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:
pure campy film noir.......2007-05-23
I loved every moment of this movie.. Bogart on the run from the law with lauren baccal what could be better? One of the most enjoyable films of the film noir genre.. absolute must see. There are a few truly precious lines in this one.. like when the guy in the cafe says how would you like your eggs? bogie says overeasy.. and the guy (who is wearing a classic diner uniform complete with that silly pointed hat) says 'easy does it'..i guess you had to be there... sorry.. this is what black and white films are about.. oh yeah there is another sequence when bogie is getting plastic surgery and he is having this surreal drug induced dream sequence where the doctor says in a very funny voice - i'm going to make you look like a bull and stretches his cheeks out.. very hard to explain but very hilarious in a campy sort of way..
Excellent dvd to own.......2007-04-06
This movie is another must for all fans of film-noir and/or Bogart & Bacall - an excellent and totally unique and original story with outstanding cinematic technique. DVD is a very high-quality preservation of the original film.
Bogart, Bacall and Screen Magic.......2007-03-01
Now married, and having made two successful films together, that dynamic duo of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall returned to work their unique blend of screen magic again in the 1947 release "Dark Passage" directed by Delmer Daves.
The film is further enhanced by the shadowy and darkened film noir hues and enhanced dramatically by the fact that Bogart is a man wanted for murder seeking to avoid capture in the streets of San Francisco, one of the most naturally photogenic cities of them all, with a particular emphasis on film noir, as evidenced by such forties' triumphs as "Maltese Falcon" starring Bogart and "Out of the Past" with Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer and Kirk Douglas, which debuted in theaters the same year that "Dark Passage" was released. "D.O.A." with Edmond O'Brien came along not long thereafter.
The important element to achieve maximum entertainment value is to suspend judgment on all the coincidences that occur since it is easy to tear holes in the plot by using logic. It is essential instead to concentrate on the film's brooding mood, on the theme of a man who is a victim of circumstances and to the San Francisco Police has committed 3 murders when he is innocent on all counts.
Bacall plays a woman who feels for Bogart since her rich and famous father was also sent to San Quentin Prison for a murder he did not commit, dying there. Bogart engineers a daring escape from San Quentin as the film commences and is picked up alongside the road and provided with food and shelter by Bacall, after which a romance ultimately ensues.
To mention how Bogart arrived in his predicament along with some of the plot twists would be to divulge too much, but it can be said that the woman who testified against Bogart and was responsible for the jury finding him guilty was Agnes Moorehead, a perpetual busybody that Bacall seeks to avoid like the plague, but who insists upon pursuing her.
Bruce Bennett had been previously engaged to Moorehead but broke it off when he learned about her true nature. Moorehead no longer is interested in Bennett, but at the same time objects to him spending time with Bacall out of spite.
Not only does Bogart need to worry about Moorehead finding out that Bacall is helping him and providing a place to stay. He needs to worry about the police and the citizenry since his face has been plastered in the local papers and a $5,000 reward is finally posted concerning his capture.
A kindly and lonely cab driver, played by Tom D'Andrea, believes in Bogart and steers him to a plastic surgeon that has lost his license and performs surgery for people who need to elude the law. One of the film's most dramatic as well as creative scenes involves a montage along with dialogue involving Bogart and the craggy-faced plastic surgeon, played by Houseley Stevenson.
Mediocre film-noir thriller.......2007-02-19
3 1/2 stars
It may not be a great classic but it is still viewable and entertaining. It has some beautiful outside settings in San Francisco, plus the always alluring presence of Bogart & Bacall.
The plot is not really thrilling or believable, but it lets you go with the flow. Slow paced, low-key dialogues, lack of action. Bogart seems to take it easy in this role: he just showed up for work. And this is rather a passive role for him.
What doesn't help either is that we don't see Bogart in the first quarter hour; and the next quarter hour we don't hear him... and still the movie holds. A way to spend 100 quiet minutes some boring afternoon.
Entertaining, if Not Profound.......2007-01-11
I found this movie to be, at heart, a simple filler flick to take up an evening your life without causing remorse. It had a plot founded on far too many unbelievable turns of luck, no great observation, and no profound comment--simply a pulpy noir with a love story ending. Usually, I rate those with 3 stars, regardless of what time period they come from, but this one I found far too enjoyable.
This boost has numerous causes. The movie has a great supporting cast, for one, and it's always a wonder to look at every one of them as they trot out in the key scenes. It tries out a new form of narrative for the first third by making the viewer see from Bogart's eyes. Though, according to the commentary, this caused a lot of uproar around the WB studios (money wasted on Bogart without actually seeing Bogart), it very effectively places you into the protagonist's shoes. Since noir flicks always try to bring the watcher to empathize with the lead character, usually through first-person narrative, I find this an interesting effort at doing the same by other means. Last is the dialog. I've always been a sucker for the 40s and 50s slang and culture, and though this movie doesn't have anywhere near the wit of, say, Maltese Falcon, it still reflects the era very nicely.
In all, it's a great flick to spend away a couple of hours, as they're sure to be interesting and entertaining. Just don't expect a classic out of it.
