I am a huge fan of foreign movies and as of late been renting several Asian movies. The Infernal Affairs Trilogy is my favorite! Way before the hoopla of "The Departed", this movie has stood out amongst alot of Asian viewers as a 5 star! Andy Lau, star, director and writer leads a team of undercover and dirty cop characters twisting and turning in the police force. Who is good and who is bad, that's what keeps you hanging in your seat till the very end.

Anyone who likes cop thrillers, and a cast of characters that keep you guessing should pick up this trilogy. Highly entertaining!

I received the item in fairly good condition. The inside of 2 of the cases were damaged and have not yet watched all to see if the DVD's are ok.

Part 1 is a winner! Martin Scorsese released the American version and won an Academy award. What higher acclaim is there for this Hong Kong original movie? The scipt takes the "corrupt cop" story to a whole other
level. Anthony Wong, Tony Leung and Andy Lau once again give outstanding performaces with a dramtic unexpected ending as only Hong Kong directors
seems to employ.
Part 2 is an interesting prequel. 2 young actors take the roles created by Andy Lau and Tony Leung and the movie weaves an interesting background
story. Part 3 is sluggish, filmed simplty to establish a trilogy.

The best Chinese language film of the last 10 years.......2007-05-12

It is a shame that the translation in subtitles is not optimal and that the dubbed voices lack the emotional qualities of the actors supposedly talking. Cantonese is beautiful to listen to but when this film was dubbed the emotions and nuances were eliminated. The actors in this film did a great job and if you can only understand English you are missing a lot.
That being said I think Hollywood has tried to rip off this movie already once (why not, there are at least 2 sequels in Hong Kong) but did not succeed.
The story is great and you have great actors in the top 4 roles giving good, intense acting jobs. This film is about good and evil and that the difference is only by an individual's perspective. This film is really about perceptions as much as "The Matrix" was, except it shows you both sides of the perspective as equal. Never has such an intellectual movie been done as entertainment or a police / crime story although the alternate ending lessens the actual movie. Check out the alternate ending only to see that Mr. Lau (yes he is one of the stars) chose the correct ending.
One last thing, I think Americans could have used a little more screen time for Kelly Chen (the therapist) so that they could find out about her talent.

Infernal Affairs (Andrew Lau and Siu Fai Mak, 2002)

Hopefully all of you are aware by now that The Departed, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture of 2006, is Martin Scorsese's adaptation of Lau and Mak's Infernal Affairs. I have not yet seen The Departed, and thus can't comment on the similarity between the two movies, but I can say that this one, at least, is a winner through and through.

Our story opens with Sam (The Hitman's Eric Tsang), a mob boss, sending five of his youngest recruits off to police academy to become moles. The brightest star in the bunch is Lau Kin Ming (international superstar Andy Lau, last seen on American screens in House of the Flying Daggers), who quickly rises through the force. What none of the criminals know is that, as Lau was in the academy, the academy was grooming their own mole, Chan Wing Yan (Tony Leung Chu Wai). Both undercover agents are detected at the same time, though no one knows the identity of either, and the two end up hunting each other down.

Yes, it reads like a comedy of errors, but it's anything but. Mak and Lau keep the action white-hot after a few minutes of setup at the beginning. The viewer barely has enough time to breathe. The movie suffers a time or two when extraneous subplots are introduced, none of which actually goes anywhere, but when the directors are focusing on the main plot, it's fireworks from beginning to end. All this is helped by the fact that Lau (the character) and Chan are well-drawn, absorbing characters, and Lau (the actor) and Leung make them into real humans with which the viewer can empathize.

If you're an action movie fan, or if you just want to see what all the fuss was about this year while putting in a little over half the time it would take to watch The Departed, you can't go wrong with Infernal Affairs. ****

Intellectual thriller from Hong Kong, capital of kung pow.......2007-03-01

Say "Cop Thriller from Hong Kong," and most cinemaphiles will smile, recalling some of the best "kung pow," "chop sockey," plain old ultra-action films ever made. This is the "can't-go-over-the-top-enough" cradle of such restrained filmmakers as John Woo ("Hard Boiled," "The Killer," "A Better Tomorrow"). Dazzling action sequences and high body counts are the hallmark of the stereotypical movie in this sub-genre.

"Infernal Affairs" takes all that and stands it on its head. "IA" is a thinking person's thriller, and not for nothing did Martin Scorcese adapt this movie and have it win his first "Best Director" Oscar. Witty and stylish, "IA" has a little something for everyone . . . except mindless violence.

The plot is simple and well-known. The Triads put a mole deep inside the police department, while the cops place a mole deep inside the Triads. Their identities are virtually unknown to anyone outside a couple of key contacts. So what happens when you live for a decade as someone else, and virtually everyone in your life thinks you are your alter ego? Can the undercover cop remain a cop? Can the criminal stay a criminal?

These questions are analyzed in a thoughtful movie, more content to play cat-and-mouse than whack-a-mole. The only thing that keeps "IA" from five-star status are two sub-plots involving two women and the undercover cop - one starts to go downstream and never goes anywhere, while the other starts in mid-stream and stops immediately. They both feel as if the filmmakers thought they had to get some female faces into the movie, but were stymied as to how to do it. A sub-plot involving the criminal and his wife is better handled.

This is not to say that "IA" is a bad or even a merely good film. It is excellent, but with all the Oscar rage over Scorcese's "The Departed," several writers are pumping this one up just a bit too much. But it is a must see for anyone looking for a thrilling, edge-of-your-seat night at the movies.

I like the original movie better:.......2007-03-01

After I enjoyed Martin Scorcese's "The Departed", I decided to watch the film that inspired the celebrated director to re-make it and to move the action from Hong Kong to Boston, MA, USA. I must say that I liked the original movie better: 50 minutes shorter than Scorcese's magnificent remake, "Infernal Affairs" is tighter, faster, more compelling and tells the same story better. It does not have a grand acting Jack Nicholson who basically plays Daryl Van Horne with the attitude and "Infernal Affairs"' characters don't talk and don't curse as much as they do in "The Departed" but the Hong Kong's movie only benefits from it. As much as I admire Leonardo DiCaprio as Bill Castigan, Tony Leung (Yan) in his role is simply unforgettable.

Fans of the Hong Kong action/crime movie Infernal Affairs (2002) and its 2003 prequel (both of which served as inspirations for Martin Scorsese's The Departed) seem split over this final part of the trilogy, which picks up at the conclusion of the original film and brings the tortured path of cop and Triad mole Lau Ming (Andy Lau) to a close. The story picks up shortly after the execution of undercover cop Chan Yan (Tony Leung), with Lau now heading up an internal investigation to ferret out other Triad plants working in the police department. While Lau works frantically to eradicate any connection between himself and mobster Hon Sam (Eric Tsang), his actions are being carefully observed by Inspector Yeung (Leon Lai), who bears a personal grudge against the crooked cop. Less aggressively action-oriented than its predecessors (though certainly still featuring plenty of gunplay), Infernal Affairs 3 suffers from a disorienting structure that shuttles back and forth between events in the first and second film (which conveniently allow stars from both pictures to make return appearances), but the central idea--the final descent of Lau--remains engaging. ridiculous plot, one dimensional cardboard-like acting (especially leon lai's rigid dead-like-fish-out-of-water performance), incoherent dialogs, horrible editing and directing, every thing is so bad if compares it to the first one. the second one has already turned bad but not as bad as this 3rd increment. the screen writers were obsessed with abnormal twists of the plots and tried to twist every section of the scenario to the extreme but unfortunately almost messed up the logic flow of a storyline. nothing deep but shallow all the way. just like a magician overplayed his black magic and suddenly found himself exposed completed without white gloves, long sleeves, and black cloak, even the white pigeons turned out to be dead. nothing could be hidden up in his sleeves or the tall hat. nothing at all. curtain call, drop it sooner than later.

Flawed but still good........2007-02-25

This is a good movie don't get me wrong but it was a real let down. This was not as strong as the first 2 of the trilogy. The one thing we do get to see is the downfall of andy laus charector both mentally and profesionally. The movie shift to much from the past to the present that you start to whish that they stayed in one place for one second so that you can get a grasp of what is going on. This is like the godfather the first 2 are a masterpiece but the 3rd part even though it is good it leaves you dissapointed by the way it turned out in the end. If it was not for the great performances from everyone this would have gotten a three star from me.

Infernal Affairs III doesn't live up to its predecessors, but not for want of trying. Its biggest problem isn't the intriguing prequel/sequel structure that juxtaposes the aftermath of the first film as Andy Lau tries to be the good man he wants to be, with disastrous consequences, alongside the last months of Tony Leung's undercover man life. Rather, it's the fact that it takes so long to really find its stride. It's not until the two-thirds mark that it really kicks in with a hospital scene where past, present and possible future collide that completely wrongfoots you. You're suddenly in a whole new place that makes you rethink what you thought was going on, leading to a powerful ending that isn't as affecting as II, but leaves one character quite literally in the circle of unending, inescapable hell. It's also here that the theme of loss of identity starts to work overtime, as Lau forgets who he is, participating in the dead Leung's sessions with the court-appointed psychiatrist and setting out to expose a corrupt cop oblivious to the fact that the evidence incriminates himself.

While Lau spends most of the movie thinking he's digging a tunnel when he's actually digging his own grave, the flashback scenes involving Leung are very different to his character's trajectory in the previous movies. If Lau is a bullet train to hell, for the first time we see Leung's character in his happier moments as he is filled with hope for a future the captions gradually counting down to his death constantly deny him. In that sense it's less subversive than the first two films, which broke time-honored HK thriller tradition by letting the bad guys win, but it works on its own terms, and while it does take too long to sort itself out (or rather for the characters to lose sight of themselves), there's a constant governing intelligence to it that separates it from other HK pictures of its ilk. Indeed, it's only really in comparison to the other two films that the third seems the lesser. It probably would have helped if they'd spent a little more time on it - it was released only two months after the second film. However, you really need to see the films in the order they were made to get the most out of them: nearly all of the film's emotional touchstones (such as the oft-repeated "Everything will be ok tomorrow" or the song that first linked the characters) relate to the previous films.

As every Asian action devotee will tell you, Infernal Affairs 2 is not a sequel but a prequel to Hong Kong directors Wai Keung Lau and Siu Fai Mak's Infernal Affairs (2002), which served as the inspiration for Martin Scorsese's Oscar-winning The Departed. Gone are original stars Andy Lau as Lau (the Matt Damon character from The Departed) and Tony Leung as Chan (Leonardo DiCaprio's counterpart); pop star Edison Chan and Shawn Yue, respectively, play younger versions of the two leads as they begin their careers as a Triad member feeding police information to mobster Hon Sam (Eric Tsang, reprising his role from the first film) and a mole infiltrating Sam's organization. A side plot involves the son (Francis Ng) of a murdered Triad leader who causes trouble for all three characters. As with the original film, the violence and bulletplay is both operatic and frantic, and the truths, half-truths, and false identities labyrinthine in their complexities; viewers are advised to watch the first Infernal Affairs before tucking into this disc, unless they wish to be hopelessly confused. a very pretentious imitation of hollywood's 'god father'. but this hongkong mafia don is a much too exaggerated and pretentious one, also badly acted. the plot is a bit too far-fetched, trying to be very complicated and at times, quite messy. putting a short and fat guy as a powerful key player was a very bad casting job too. not bad, but definitely not great. my only impression after finished watching this film is nothing but way too pretentious.

Diabolically ambitious sequel .......2007-01-19

Infernal Affairs II is one prequel you definitely shouldn't see before the original - so much of the interest comes from spotting throwaway details that assume more importance in the original film, and the character revelations are far more fascinating if you've seen the original. Take the opening monologue: standard enough - until you see who it is that Inspector Wong is opening up to: what we know about their eventual fates and the implications it has about their relationship is far more intriguing than if you choose this outing as your starting point.

With no Andy Lau or Tony Leung this time round, their younger selves played by the lacklustre Shawn Yue and Edison Chen are sidelined in favor of their superiors. It's a wise decision: Tsang and Francis Ng are superb, although curiously Anthony Wong isn't as good as in the original in a more expansive and more morally compromised role. The first half hour is awkward, but the deferred violence following the death of the local triad boss is well handled and the film fires into life with some genuinely great filmmaking once the consequences start catching up with the various characters.

The influence here is clearly the Godfather films, but whereas Godfather II was ultimately just a typical sequel exercise in underlining and escalation, this back story really does add layers to the original, with Eric Tsang becoming a genuinely tragic figure in his final scene. Where Godfather II tended to use history merely as a backdrop, here the handover of Hong Kong becomes an integral part of the film. The final montage of power being handed over from one nation to another, as police badges are replaced alongside criminals photos on the wall carries real weight and substance: it's what the film is all about - the loss of authority and the gaining of power. (Special praise to for Chan Kwong Wing's superb score.) Not as good as the original, true, but still very impressive indeed and miles ahead of Scorsese's bloated remake of the original.

This came with my infernal affairs boxed set dvd. It tells the whole Infernal Affairs story in chronological order. It is specially edited so that the three films are seamlessly inetegrated into one long film. Buy it if you are a big fan of the series. This dvd is very hard to find.

The Departed.......2006-10-05

When first watching this film, I was blown away with the plot and acting. Then the 2nd and 3rd movie followed up the next year and expectation wasn't disappointed. It's like a Hong Kong "The Godfather" trilogy with cops. I hope the American remake does not disappoint its viewers much like that garbage film "Gangs of New York" staring Leonardo DiCraprio. Great trilogy, great DVD, great deal. Plus you can't find this disc set anywhere. I looked. The only problem with this set is that it plays in the chronological order of the trilogy. Weird, but interesting!

This set came out in 2005. It is strictly for die hard fans. There is a limited amount of these sets worldwide.(I forgot the number)The one that I have is similar to this but it has 8 dvds. There are 2 dvds for each film. (One is the feature film, the other is for the extras.)The seventh and eighth dvds tell the Infernal Affairs story in chronlolgical order. It is specially edited so the three films are seamlessly integrated into one long film.The set also comes with a big black hard case to store all the dvds. KEEP IN MIND! I think the set here at amazon is different becasue this is only the 6 dvd boxset. Ask them if the set contains the rare chronological dvd. If it doesn't then I wouldn't buy it.

I just finished watching INFERNAL AFFAIRS with my dad right now. We loved it! It was an action packed thriller with edge-of-your-seat moments.

A man is expelled from a cadet class in his teenage era, then we go to the profile of a man named Lau, a cop who's on both the cop side and the gang side steals his identity, and are chasing each other. But after becoming a mole for the gang side, These two people find themselves fighting over each other's buisness.

This is a fantastic film with plenty thrills. See it!

what a wonderful yet sad romance thriller. highly recommended. don't forget to pick up 'the eraser in my head' too. wonderful, wonderful modern day romance stories. beautifully and seriously done. can't believe korean young ladies could be so intoxicatedly beautiful and so naturally talented. the whole movie was shot in holland, the settings were as beautiful as a fascinating oil painting. kow-tou to korean movie industries and all the wonderful actors, you've brought so many beautiful things into the world.
