Out of Sight scored critical raves, but its title sums up the theatrical fate of Steven Soderbergh's coolly comic crime caper and misfit romance based on Elmore Leonard's novel. But this is the sort of buried treasure home video was created to rescue.
George Clooney comes into his own as a leading man in the role of inveterate bank robber Jack Foley. Incarcerated, he uses another inmate's prison break as a cover for his own escape. Waiting for him, according to plan, is his partner, Buddy (Ving Rhames). Also waiting for him, not according to plan, is federal agent Karen Sisco (the ravishing Jennifer Lopez). She finds herself disarmed in more ways than one when she is deposited in the getaway car's trunk with Jack. But that doesn't stop her from joining the task force created to capture him, while he plans "one last heist."
Out of Sight is a rich, entertaining film, stylish without being showy, faithful to the integrity of Leonard's potent dialogue and quirky characters, and seamlessly acted by a dream ensemble. Standouts include Albert Brooks as convicted insider trader Richard Ripley, who while in prison brags to the wrong people that he has $5 million in uncut diamonds hidden in his house; Don Cheadle as Maurice (don't call him "Snoopy") Miller, with whom Jack warily teams up to steal said diamonds; Dennis Farina as Karen's protective father (his idea of a birthday gift is a Sig-Hauer .38); and, in unbilled cameos, Michael Keaton, reprising his Jackie Brown role as FBI agent Ray Nicolet, and Samuel L. Jackson.
If you liked Get Shorty and Jackie Brown, you'll find this, well, Out of Sight. --Donald Liebenson

Out of Sight was one of the best movies of 1998, but ironically this superior crime comedy was a box-office disappointment. Fortunately the movie can enjoy a long life on home video, where it can be savored by anyone who missed its original release. Making his best film since 1989's sex, lies, and videotape, director Steven Soderbergh pays tribute to the signature wit and intricacy of Elmore Leonard's novel, brilliantly adapted by Scott Frank, the gifted screenwriter who previously adapted Leonard's Get Shorty. The movie's a prime showcase for the talent and chemistry of George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez, respectively playing a career bank robber who's escaped from jail and the federal agent who falls for his charms while tracking him down. Soderbergh directs with confident visual flair, shifting time- lines (à la Pulp Fiction) to weave together subplots and maintain vivid focus on Leonard's splendid characters and smooth-as-silk dialogue. While the sexy repartée between Clooney and Lopez recalls the vintage interplay of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, Ving Rhames and Steve Zahn add ample comic relief as Clooney's accomplices. Dennis Farina is memorable as Lopez's father, and Albert Brooks is almost unrecognizable as a Wall Street crook whose mansion--and a cache of uncut diamonds--provides the setting for the film's climactic caper. As orchestrated by Soderbergh, the film offers a feast of plot twists and surprises, but it never loses track of its delightful characters and the clever wit that brings them so vividly to life. The Collector's Edition DVD includes commentary by Soderbergh, deleted scenes, production notes, theatrical trailers, and more. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
HD DVD gives film rich upgrade.......2007-06-17
Out of Sight is one of my favorite Clooney flicks- George Clooney in an Elmore Leonard flick with the typical set of convoluted characters in both high and low places is a fun film. The Universal HD-DVD is gorgeous! The rich colors of Miami pop on my big screen tv at 1080i and remind me why I can't be bothered to spend $10 per ticket to go to a theater anymore!
I liked the fact that Universal doesn't clutter up the disk with any annoying intros that you can't fast forward through- Warner Brothers does that.
Better than I expected.......2007-05-02
I first saw this movie in a cheap second-run theater in Columbus, Ohio, where nothing else I remotely wanted to see was playing. On the way in, I was highly skeptical about the combined talents of Jennifer Lopez and George Clooney.
On the way out, I was hailing Clooney as the new Cary Grant, and had a fresh appreciation for Lopez' charms. This sharp, clever film offers a host of pleasures--suspense, romance, and some witty dialogue. The story is not always told chronologically, but the narrative quirkiness adds to the movie's appeal.
After seeing Out of Sight, I started to seek out all of director Steven Soderbergh's movies, and have found almost all of them as consistently entertaining.
great movie for multiple viewing.......2007-04-09
I saw this movie for umpteenth time just recently (my seventh, I think). George Clooney (Good Night, Good Luck,
O Brother, Where Art Thou?) is delicious in it, Jennifer Lopez (The Wedding Planner, Selena) proves her rising star power, and Steven Soderberg (The Good German, Ocean's Eleven) as a director manages to delight, as always. This movie never ages and the jokes never become old. I could watch it over and over and be entertained.
Wonderful!.......2007-04-04
One of George Clooney's best movies! The chemistry between George and Jennifer Lopez is wonderful and the dialogue is crisp and clean. A lot of sexual tension between them and they pull it off wonderfully!
Oh, and the bathtub scene with George is not to be missed!
Great movie!!
A classic movie with a great cast!.......2007-01-16
Author Elmore "Dutch" Leonard has written over forty novels in about as many years, most of which have been turned into feature films. To my knowledge, only four of his crime thrillers have been turned into successful movies: 52 Pick-up, Get Shorty, Jackie Brown, and Out of Sight. Whatever the magic is that Mr. Leonard puts into each of his books, few directors are able to capture it on screen. The same thing can be said for the novels by Stephen King. Only a handful of well-made movies come to mind. When the magic is captured, it's a truly amazing experience to behold in the arena of movie making. Out of Sight, starring George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez, is one of these rare experiences where everything comes together perfectly. The director, Steven Soderbergh, and screenplay writer, Scott Frank, were able to stay true to Leonard's words, as well as being able to transfer the heart and soul of the story to the big screen. Though it seems like few people actually saw this film when it was released theatrically, this is the movie that I think made major stars out of Clooney and Lopez, not to mention boosting the careers of Don Cheadle and Steve Zahn and Ving Rhames. Out of Sight, like Get Shorty and Jackie Brown, is now considered a classic to fans of the "crime caper." This is a movie that you want to have in your film library.
Out of Sight deals with Jack Foley (played by Clooney), the country's most successful bank robber. When Jack escapes from a Florida correction's facility, he accidentally runs into Federal Marshal, Karen Sisco (played by Lopez), who's at the prison to serve some papers. Unable to leave her behind, Jack and his pal, Buddy (played by Rhames), toss her into the trunk of her own car. Jack climbs in behind her, and Buddy quickly drives the car away from the prison and to safety. It's during the trunk ride that Jack and Karen develop feelings for each other, each realizing the impossibility of the situation. After the getaway, Jack refuses to forget Karen and what the experience meant to him. This eventually leads Karen to Detroit, where she hopes to arrest Jack before he can pull off one last score. Of course, both of them have to call a time out in order to see if there's any real chemistry in their relationship and, boy, is there! Unfortunately, Jack has to go ahead with the final robbery and Karen will have to arrest him, if she gets the opportunity. No one ever said love would be easy.
Though George Clooney has done a number of extremely successful films since Out of Sight, I still consider this movie to be his best. He captured the charm and wit of Jack Foley to a tee and made you believe that a bank robber and a Federal Marshal could actually fall in love with each other. Jennifer Lopez was also at her best in this movie. She shined with beauty and intellect and determination as a Federal Marshal who's prepared to shoot the man she loves, if it comes down to that. Don Cheadle brought the character of Maurice (aka Snoopy) alive in such a way that you couldn't help but like him, even though he's the bad guy. That's a tough job to do for any actor. I will say that Steve Zahn came close to stealing every scene that he was in as the pot-smoking Glenn Michaels, making you laugh out loud at his realistic, yet funny behavior. The cast was simply perfect all the way around, bringing special nuances to their characters that made them stand out. There were even cameo appearances by Michael Keaton, reviving his role as Ray Nicolette, the ATF agent from the movie, Jackie Brown, plus Samuel L. Jackson in a short, but powerful scene at the end that brings a hopeful smile to your face. This is also the movie that established a partnership between Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney. They would go on to make several more hit movies together after this one. Out of Sight is definitely the type of film that you can watch over and over again. It'll make you laugh, while keeping you on the edge of your seat for the final showdown. I only wish that Hollywood could make more movies like this. The extras include a thirty-minute behind the scenes documentary, plus twenty minutes of deleted scenes and a movie commentary with its director and screenwriter.

The Last Don II.......2007-06-09
A very rear view of what the Mafia were like, brutal and stricked. It's not a movie for the faint hearted. A very riveting movie with a wonderful cast.
Delightful Movie.......2007-06-09
I saw this on tv, loved it and got the DVD as a gift! Anyone who loves Mafia movies, this one is for you.
Worthy.......2007-04-26
Kept in suspense every minute. Danny Aiello finally displays his finer talent as the Don. Has the required skill. Kirsty Alley also pulls thru in anguish, pain and doubt toward the Don, the Clericuzio. Jason Gedrick, innocent from the start, a given for the future. Serious family business headed toward the flame. Ruthless to the point, perhaps wiser.
Oops, I was talking about the The First Don, I mean The Last Don 1
Terrible........2006-06-02
Who ever wrote the screenplay for this movie not only didn't bother to read the book, but they didn't even bother to watch the first movie! Don't bother, gang.
Part one was great, this one..........2005-10-01
The main problem with this movie is the music. They have put loud music on top of the dialogues, so often it is impossible to understand what the actors are saying!!!
The plot is ok, although you do not understand why Giorgio would want to leave the job of Don to Crocefisso, and not take it for himself.
Next it is not really clear why Crocefisso came back from Paris at all. If I understood it correctly, at the beginning of the movie Don Clericuzio only said that he missed him. Not that he wanted him back. But, again the music was covering the dialogues, and so I migh have misunderstood.

Description
A comedy of love, laughter, and larceny. With the FBI hot on their trail, a petty thief (Denis Leary) and his long-tim girlfriend (Sandra Bullock) take up temporary residence in a beach house on a posh island, where their love for each other is put to the ultimate test. "The best romantic comdey, caper, date film of the year." (Norman Mark, WMAQ-TV/Chicago).
Customer Reviews:
Bawdry and different!.......2007-06-02
this movie is a hit in out house. We drag it out a few times a year and really enjoy it!! No subliminal messages no preaching just entertainment!!! I liked Sandra Bullock in this role! Denis Leary was great. Good flick!
Lighthearted Comedy.......2005-09-30
I enjoyed this movie. It is a lighthearted comedy, with a good lesson in honesty for the younger viewers. Beautiful scenery.
One of those movies you don't mind watching more than once.
A Cute, Funny Date Movie........2002-11-03
I don't know why the other reviewers were so hard on this movie. Perhaps they expected more from a "Sandra Bullock" flick. I enjoyed it. It's a cute and funny movie about a dense thief and his smart girlfriend trying to evade the law.
Okay, it's not as fast-paced as MIDNIGHT RUN and Yaphet Kotto is not as funny as the FBI man trying to catch them. It also loses a little steam towards the end. But the tete-a-tete and chemistry between Denis Leary and Sandra Bullock works. Actually, by focusing on Bullock one might miss what a great job Leary has done in playing the beleagured boyfriend.
The digital transfer of the DVD is excellent judging from the stunning New England scenery. It is available for a bargain price and is worth every penny.
Dry humor, but still funny at times........2002-10-18
This is a very slow movie about a thief (Denis Leary) and his girlfriend (Sandra Bullock) who are forced to hold up in a vacationing couples home until they can escape the police.
Leary is his usual naurotic self while attempting to save his relationship with Bullock.
SANDRA BULLOCK DESERVES BETTER THAN THIS!.......2001-09-15
The only thing that keeps this film from totally tanking is the undeniable charm of Sandra Bullock. She does, however, deserve better than this. Dennis Leary should stick to acting, because, having written this piece of dreck, should he decide to write full time, he will be spending a lot of time in the unemployment line.
The premise is simple. A low life, dumb and inept petty thief, played with some saving grace by Dennis Leary, steals a famous painting that he is supposed to resell to an anonymous buyer at a remote location. Accompanied by his working class girlfriend, Sandra Bullock, who does all she can with this thankless role, they go to a location near the drop off point, only they get there before the drop off day and need a place to stay. They move temporarily into a mansion, whose owners are away. A rich and curious neighbor comes over, but they manage to convince the neighbor that they are friends of the owner and are there as invited guests.
Meanwhile, the FBI is hot on their trail with a team headed up by Yaphet Kotto, an actor too good to be in this film. To make a long story short, Bullock wants Leary to go straight. He waffles. The neighbor goes for Bullock. She finds herself attracted to him but is torn by loyalty to Leary. She waffles. A local kid comes up with some dirt on the neighbor that he shares with Leary. This gives Leary the ammunition he needs to save the day, when the FBI finally catches up with them. To find out what happens, you will just have to suffer through this movie, as I did. All I will say is that what happens is predictable.

Customer Reviews:
Canadian Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Drama.......2007-04-11
This is a drama based on the entrance of a large motorcycle gang into the Ontario market: a thinly veiled depiction of the Hells Angels, called the "triple-sixers". In 2000-2001 the HA entered the Ontario market through a series of patchovers of existing clubs such as the Satan's Choice, Para Dice Riders, Lobos and Vagabonds. The plot is realistic enough, with Canadian production values (fellow Canucks will know what this means): earnest, made in two versions shot concurrently, one for each official language (English and French). If you are interested in the subject, you will find this engaging. Even as a basic crime show it holds up. The police, for the most part, are depicted as more interested in their internal politics than actually catching anyone and the bikers are about what one would expect. Unique in its Canadian setting and loosely based on real life, it is worth a look.
Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely.......2005-11-05
The Last Chapter isn't so much about Bikers as it is about power; deals made and broken, promises not kept, and lies to family and friends. Canada's largest Biker gang, the Triple Sixers, wants a conduit to Ontario. Bob Durelle (Michael Ironside) wants to be that conduit, with 10 new Triple Six chapters of his own, while best friend Ross Desbiens (Roy Dupuis) wants no part of the Sixers. Bob and Ross make a secret deal to divide and conquer, but as Bob grows more and more powerful, can he hold up his end of the deal? Does he still want to?
This series is not about dudes on bikes. It digs so much deeper into the souls of the gang leaders, exposing us to their families, their friends, their loyalties, and their trust. Marini Orsini gives an amazing performance in the role of Bob's wife, who can't believe what's happening before her very eyes. Also outstanding is Michel Forget as Guenette, the police force's Biker "expert," who actually understands the Biker's mindset as he tries desperately to keep the peace, even after "his services are no longer required."
In the Last Chapter Two, loyalty and trust are a thing of the past. Bikers are double- and triple-dealing, and it's a little difficult to keep the players straight as they change allegiances back and forth and back again. Bob learns it isn't always good to be da king, as take-over pressures mount from all sides.
Yes, the Bikers do ride bikes in this series. But this is also the story of how they live, and of how they die.
There are extras on every disk, but I would advise watching the entire series before watching the extras, particularly the "Deleted Scenes" and the "Last Chapter Files." They need to be seen, but they can spoil the story if you haven't watched the entire film.
well produced biker related fare........2005-10-18
I discovered this item while browsing for biker stuff. The description said "Sopranos on Harleys" so I invested. This was a miniseries that aired in Canada, and was not shown in the US. I didn't get the Sopranos feel from it, and there truthfully weren't enough riding scenes for my taste, but it was still passable in other ways. I believe this must have been inspired by real events between biker clubs in Canada, I won't name them, but you can find the headlines. They must have had some advisors detailing the way things work inside a club. For instance, they were using chalkboards and talking with their mouths covered to avoid surveillence. A small part of this is in french with subtitles, but it was a Canadian production.
The story is of a small club that patches over (joins by changing their name and colors) to one of the big clubs to consolidate drug deals. There is dissention in the ranks and a few of the little guys refuse to join. Things quickly become unfriendly and the brotherhood erodes with well placed car bombs and drive by shootings. Women will probably root for the pretty boy (Dupuis) but like the real deal, there are no good guys. Michael Ironside excels in showing the slide from the top to deep paranoia. But its the guys in the background that keep it interesting.
This is both parts 1 and 2 and lasts about 9 hours. It is pretty entertaining and also informative, if you know what you're looking at.
The Last Chapter Vol 1 & 2.......2005-09-21
This is an awesome mini series. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recomend to all! Once I started watching...I couldn't stop!! I had to go through both vol 1 & 2 marathon. Awesome story...great acting!! If you like the Soprano's...you'll love this!! You won't be disappointed.

Product Description
The atomic bomb was the most secret and expensive research and development program of WWII. The second most expensive was the airplane that would carry it: the B-29. Nicknamed the Superfortress, the four-engine giant had formidable armnament including machineguns that could be fired by remote control. It also had the advanced range of nearly 5,000 miles while carrying 2,000 pounds of bombs.
Featured on this DVD are five rare films from 1945 showing the capabilities of this amazing aircraft. They include instructional films made for the pilots and crew chiefs, and Building the Bomb about the design and construction of this giant plane. The DVD concludes with The Last Bomb, a stunning Technicolor profile of the 20th Air Force as it pummels Tokyo in the summer of 1945. The film includes rare footage of B-29s and their P-51 Mustang escorts. You'll also see Gen. Curtis LeMay as he directs the bombing campaign, and the island airfields at Tinian and Iwo Jima.
The B-29 was the plane that ended the war. This is the most definitive document of their combat record.
Color and black and white films.
Please note: This DVD is recorded in the DVD-R format. It may not be compatible with first-generation DVD players. It will play normally on most computers and 99% of DVD player. Check your player's manual for more information.
