3 out of 5 stars A Double Life.......2007-05-01

In David Lynch's 1997 cult film, Jazz musician Fred Madison (Bill Pullman) lives in a swank Los Angeles house with his wife Renee (Patricia Arquette, in a prankishly awful brown Betty Page wig), whom he suspects of adultery; they receive mysterious videotapes that seem to have been taken in their house while they both sleep. At a Hollywood party, Fred encounters a mysterious stranger (Robert Blake, in the film's most memorable bit), a nightmarish joker character without eyebrows who uncannily seems to be able to be two places at once. Before he knows it, Fred is under arrest for the gruesome murder and dismemberment of Renee; in prison, he seems to undergo a metamorphosis and become a whole new character, Pete Dayton, a handsome younger mechanic (Balthazar Getty). Dayton becomes involved with Alice, the girlfriend (again played by Arquette, now a blonde) of his best customer, a gangsterish figure named Mr. Eddy (Robert Loggia); Alice tries to escape with Pete from Mr. Eddy's clutches, and then things get really wild.

In retrospect, LOST HIGHWAY film seems now mostly to pave the way for his superb 2001 MULHOLLAND DR., covering many of the same obsessions (the dark dreamy tone, the split narratives, a divided main character, the Los Angeles wasteland) but without the later film's very welcome moments of comic relief or its charismatic and complex central performance by Naomi Watts (in her famous star-making performance). Although Bill Pullman is quite fine at conveying torment, he is less adept at suggesting inner depths or self-division. And its quite puzzling to see why Lynch cast Arquette for any reason (other than for her physical similarity as Alice to Jayne Mansfield). Both Getty and Robert Blake are much more memorable, but they're in smaller roles and can't hold the films together by themselves. The film has some superbly unsettling visual moments (the empty vortexes of Pullman's hallways, a dream vision repeated twice of a desert cabin exploding in flames in reverse), and the film creepily evokes some of the most infamous deaths in Hollywood history, such as the murder of the Black Dahlia (suggested by the bisection of Renee and her dark 40s wig) and the car accident that killed Jayne Mansfield (evoked by the death of the character of Sammy, and by Arquette's appearance as Alice). Even so, MULHOLLAND DR. shows how much stronger a film Lynch might have made, with all the same narrative enigmas but a much stronger emotional connection.

Purchase a region free DVD player or find an unlock code for your player (google "DVD unlock code") and purchase the Lost Highway 2 disc special edition from Amazon.co.uk. Remastered, 5.1 DTS surround, anamorphic 2.35:1...my 1 star rating is only based on the quality of the Canadian import. I give the UK import a solid 5 stars.

1 out of 5 stars A rare miss for Lynch........2007-04-17

I love David Lynch. To be honest, he could properly poop in a DVD case and I'd give it 4 stars. This movie, however, is terrible. There's no tangent plot, no likeable characters, no nothing. The first viewing of this ended with me and a friend concluding, "I'd like to watch the rest of the movie, but I don't care." The 2nd viewing felt like a marathon in self-control and patience. This is an awful movie.

3 out of 5 stars Good film, bad dvd.......2007-03-21

This movie is excellent if you are into david lynch or any other movies that make you think. Instead of the director telling you exactly what's happening, he has you experience it from the main characters point of view. The reason i gave this movie 3 stars was only because of the quality of this dvd. I would have given it a 1 star if it wasn't for the actual movie. Get the 2 disc version from amazon uk. It's a million times better. That one gets 5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars I Guess The Joke's On Us........2007-03-10

This flick was weird, and rather mind-numbingly so, even for a David Lynch film! It took me three watchings, half a bottle of tylenol (for the headaches it gave me) and reading about three or four interviews online with Lynch himself wherein he offered the only explanation that he could (something about a "psychogenic fugue"...?!?!) over this film and it's bizarre circuitous plot for me to even begin to figure out just what the heck is going on throughout half of it! Even now, I'm still not enitirely sure that I'm totally getting this or any of Lynch's films for that matter. And in my opinion therein lies the whole point/problem with Lynch's films. Meaning simply that maybe all of us spend far too much time trying to decipher what his movie's are all about, and that ultimately they may very well be nothing more than big elaborate jokes that he is playing on all of us in that no one but him will ever actually "figure out" his movie's and their supposed "meanings"...if they even have any at all! Though with that said I still find myself somewhat of a fan of the man's films as they are brilliant in terms of the production values (i.e. unique and meticulous set designs, the awesome, weirdo soundtracks, the costuming, the lighting etc.). I just decided some time ago to quit spending so much time thinking about his film's as it's pretty much futile in my book, and instead I just enjoy them for the wild, trippy mindf***s that they obviously are. And 1997's "Lost Highway" is one of Lynch's best examples of this. I highly recommened it to most people, however, those who aren't familiar with the man's film's before this one might want to try the more commercial and less psychologically mind-bending films from earlier in his career entitled "Blue Velvet" and "The Elephant Man". Oh, and I should add that the soundtrack may very well be one of the best ever created! Kudos to Trent Reznor and Lynch regular Angelo Badalementi for that one.

5 out of 5 stars you don't have to understand it all.......2006-03-27

David Lynch has said that Hollywood movies are too concerned with the audience always knowing what is happening at all times. He's right. Life isn't like that. Everyday you see interesting and sometimes odd (sometimes bizzare) things happening and don't really understand what it was you just witnessed. You hear snigglets of conversation and wish you had all of the details...sometimes you get more details but are still left with questions that will never be answered. Lynch sometimes reflects this in his work. Lost Highway probably more so than any other movie of his. The scenes are incredible and there is (I believe) an explanation to it all...sometimes I can almost figure it out...but in the end I'm left with some questions. But it doesn't matter, because the ride is so scenic and enjoyable that I'm not really hung up on the destination. Lynch said he had OJ Simpson on his mind while writing this movie...so keep that in mind. Sometimes we see the world as we want to see it and not how it really is...sometimes we live in a delusional world. My friend just got divorced and she admitted to me that she honestly wasnt as happy as she had convinced herself she was while she was married. The way she saw her world while married was much different than the way it really was. And sometimes when a person who has been living in a delusional reality is confronted with things the way they really are, they can't accept it and either end up in therapy or in a white bronco riding slowly along some lost highway.

5 out of 5 stars This may hurt a little, but its something you'll get used to........2005-11-27

It is worth twice what they are asking for it. Buy this film. You probably won't get it all on the first viewing, so you'll want to watch it multiple times. This is the film that turned me on to the twisted world of David Lynch. This film is a rare gem and is very difficult to find on DVD. While you are at it, buy Mulholland Drive as well.

4 out of 5 stars weird movie wonder.......2005-09-27

This movie is really weird and good but its not worth the 30.00 or so dollars they want for it. go rent it!

Australia released, PAL/Region 4 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada. Languages: o English (Dolby Digital 2.0) Synopsis: Another extreme exploration of the darkness within, Lost Highway (1997) marked David Lynch's cinematic and artistic comeback after Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992). A bold move away from typical Hollywood narrative, Lynch and co-writer Barry Gifford craft a quintessentially Lynch-ian mind game of multiple identities, heroes, villains, and femme fatales that defies conventional space and time. Spiked with such evocative film noir images as a highway at night and a burning cabin, Lost Highway's tale of jealousy, murder, and retribution becomes the ultimate noir fever dream of sexual terror, yearning, and violence, yet Lynch still finds a hopeful space for woozy romance between Balthazar Getty and Natasha Gregson Wagner. Even as the story flies out of control (though Robert Blake's disturbing "Mystery Man" seems to know all the answers), Lost Highway remains a sound/image tour de force, particularly in the ultra-moody first half before the cacophony explodes in the second half. Making its perversity the prime attraction, Lost Highway's ads trumpeted its two thumbs down from mainstream critics Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel; Lynch's next film, The Straight Story (1999), however, precisely lived up to its title. Plot is a meaningless term when trying to describe Lost Highway. Here, more or less, is what happens: A noise-jazz saxophonist (Bill Pullman) suspects his wife (Patricia Arquette) of infidelity. Meanwhile, someone is breaking into their house and videotaping them while they sleep. The wife is murdered and Pullman is convicted of the crime. Then, in prison, he transmogrifies into a young mechanic (Balthazar Getty) who is subsequently released, since, after all, he's not the guy they convicted. Getty goes back to his life and meets a local gangster's moll, who happens to be played by Patricia Arquette... but none of this has much to do with what the movie is really about. Dreams are what intrigues director David Lynch. Not friendly, happy dreams; his dreams whisper that what we think is real is just something we made up, something to keep ourselves from falling into chaos. Characters are fragments. Events happen not because they make sense, but because deep down we want these things to happen. Of course, in Lynch's dreams, as in our waking lives, getting what we want is not always pleasant. In the movie's best moments, you really have no idea what you're seeing. The screen is a big rectangle of color and shadow, but what it represents, well, it could be anything. And yet, in those moments, you've been given just enough hints of place, character, and story that these elusive images elicit a genuine dread, a sense that you might not want to see this, yet you can't look away; a sense that we are living on borrowed time, that something is fiercely askew in our psyches. As a whole, Lost Highway is a failure: much of it is padded, gratuitous, and indulgent and pointless cameos bog down an already sluggish narrative. Yet within that failure are moments worth more than the entirety of most successful movies. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars I sneeze at this weirdness.......2007-01-28

Either I'm not deep enough or this film is just too weird, or maybe these two deficiencies met each other halfway, but anyway I didn't get much from this film. The same basic themes:

      (a) identity is fluid
      (b) nothing is real
      (c) sex makes us do weird things

are mostly covered and better treated in the film 'Jacob's Ladder'.

A big HOWEVER though - this movie has one FANTASTIC scene which probably could justify all the money otherwise wasted in its creation: that is Mr. Eddie's encounter with the tailgating driver! Oh Lordie! That was SOOOO satisfying! Worth the price of admission for sure. Anybody who has ever driven a car - lick your chops and savor well!

Weird , Wicked , Wonderful. If you want to get creeped out , this movie will get under your skin. Mutiple views needed to understand, almost ten years later and I still dont get it... Can anyone help? Mind Twisting Erotic Fun. Cool Soundtrack.

2 out of 5 stars Where are we going again?.......2006-08-11

Lost Highway could be one of Lynch's most idiosyncratic films, thin on coherency and plot, thick on aesthetics and mood. The first third of the film, about musician Bill Pullman and his unfaithful wife Patricia Arquette, is creepy enough to be captivating, despite a dearth of action and dialogue. As an aside: Pullman may seem a strange casting choice, as it did to me, but the director did work wonders with a similarly hapless actor, Kyle Maclachlan, in Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks. The rest of the film is about Balthazar Getty's character, who becomes involved with a gangster's moll, also played by Arquette. The relationship of unrelated characters is seemingly the crux of Lost Highway, but it is never explained and best left for you to surmise yourself. Even if you follow this rather one-pitch, tediously paced film to its conclusion, you would expect some kind of payoff. Instead it isn't clear that even Lynch knew where he was going. Lynch fans are sure to disagree, but for me, this is far from the same caliber of a Blue Velvet or Mulholland Dr.

      4 out of 5 stars A Lynch dream........2006-06-04

Lynch movies rarely require just a plot synopsis. This film seems more like Lynch is relating a dream than making a movie. However, I have often wanted to see my own dreams on the big screen, so what's the harm in that. Dreams may not seem to make sense, but sometimes they're pretty entertaining. They can also be kind of creepy. That's what Lost Highway seems to be, especially since Bill Pullman has some extremely odd experiences, then he's someone else. I think, of all the Lynch films I've seen, this one is the most puzzling. But I still find its mood engaging and the strange character development entertaining. Lynch fans will enjoy the paths taken in Lost Highway, though the film lacks the potential mass appeal of Mulholland Drive or Blue Velvet.

1 out of 5 stars The emperor has no clothes!.......2006-04-09

Make a movie that's a piece of rubbish and put David Lynch's name on it, some will call it a work of genius. Even taking into account that the middle of the movie may be the desired recollection of the main character, Fred, or that the movie purposely mixes-up scenes, this movie, The Lost Highway, is still garbage. The first act with Fred as himself is boring!

David Lynch is a fine director, but his screenplays and ideas are just plain dumb. The avant garde crowd may think he's a genius but it takes the average Joe to point out the truth: most of David Lynch's movies are really stupid.
