Fact and fiction intertwine in Milos Forman's colorful kaleidoscope of E.L. Doctorow's sprawling novel of turn-of-the-century America. Anchored in the true story of the murder of architect Stanford White (Norman Mailer) by Harry Thaw (Robert Joy) over the affections of his wife Evelyn Nesbit (Elizabeth McGovern), Forman weaves a portrait of early 1900s America in a tapestry of intertwining fictional tales. The primary thread involves the proud black pianist Coalhouse Walker Jr. (Howard Rollins) and his demand for justice when a racist fireman destroys his automobile, which escalates into a reign of terror by Walker and a band of revolutionaries. A secondary story involves an ambitious immigrant artist (Mandy Patinkin) whose primitive flipbooks send him on the road to creating early cinema. Centering all of these stories in one way or another is an upper-class family known simply as Father (James Olson), Mother (Mary Steenburgen), and Younger Brother (Brad Dourif). James Cagney came out of a twenty-year retirement to play the irascible Irish police commissioner, a character created for the film. Forman's biggest departure from Doctorow's novel, however, is his focus on Walker's story, cutting away the other threads to little more than asides in the final half of the picture, the primary dramatic weakness of an otherwise rich evocation of America's past. Randy Newman's lyrical score and Miroslav Ondricek's understated cinematography earned two of the film's eight Academy Awards nominations --Sean Axmaker

2 out of 5 stars These cuts are moronic........2007-05-18

What a stupid piece of vandalism to cut 40 minutes out of such a great picture! Fortunately the Region 2 version is complete, a good reason in itself to buy a multi-system DVD player.

1 out of 5 stars Paramount, issue a legitimate DVD release.......2007-03-20

I can't overemphasize the level of disappointment I have at the hack censorship Paramount management has engaged in with the DVD release of Ragtime. How they got Milos Forman to participate in adding commentary to that blatant smear of his efforts is is beyond me.

Does the studio actually think that diluting the film to "reposition" it (ergo, move it from an R to a PG rating) is going to dramatically grow its appeal? The core market for this DVD is the universe of film fans old enough to fondly remember seeing the original theatrical release in the early 1980s -- but what the studio is offering them (as many reviews here clearly state) is unacceptable.

I want to see Elizabeth McGovern's entire performance, Paramount - so I went to the secondary wholesale market and purchased a new old stock VHS copy, which contains the FULL original release.

Or put another way, one less DVD sale for you.

Because yes, while it's your right as the copyright holder, I won't purchase censored goods.

5 out of 5 stars One of the rare cases of the movie being better than the book!.......2007-03-17

I read the novel RAGTIME years ago and was rather underwhelmed possibly because of my prejudice at the time against books that mingle fiction with real historical characters and events - a literary style I have now come to accept and appreciate. Even so, the movie is much more enjoyable and emotionally moving than the novel. The sets and costumes look authentic, the acting is convincing and the film simply transports the viewer to the early 20th century. One caution, though the movie is rated PG, the version I saw on DVD had some scenes that would probably put it in the R category today and would definitely make it PG-13 though that rating did not exist in the early 1980's when the film was produced.

1 out of 5 stars BEWARE: Hacked-up version.......2007-02-13

BEWARE: the VHS version is 156 minutes long - the DVD version is 115 minutes long. THEY DELETED 41 MINUTES FROM THIS.

The long version is worthy of 4.5 stars - this short version is useless.

5 out of 5 stars Ragtime is one of the greatest movies ever!.......2007-01-19

The central theme still resonates with how America was, and is, in this classic turn-of-the-century period piece. Intertwining multiple storylines with know historical events gives the movie a real sense of being. The directing is brillant, the music even better and the acting is stupendous!!!

The jaunty rhythms of Irving Berlin drive Alexander's Ragtime Band, an epic musical from 1938 that follows the up-and-down romance of a young bandleader (Tyrone Power, Witness for the Prosecution) and the singer he loves (Alice Faye, Tin Pan Alley) over decades. Their journey from a San Francisco honky-tonk to mass popularity is marked by classic songs like "Oh How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning," "Blue Skies," "A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody," "Easter Parade," and the title track. Power and Faye are a little bland, but the supporting cast--including Don Ameche (Midnight), Jack Haley (the Tin Woodsman from The Wizard of Oz), and a very young Ethel Merman--give the movie some real personality, as do a few wild dance numbers. At the end, the movie becomes surprisingly suspenseful and even a little touching. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Tyrone Power stars in this "must-see" (TV Giude) film as a free thinking classical musician who wants the world to dance to a different beat. Set in the early 1900's this extravaganza of music, story and romance follows the highs and lows in the life of Roger Grant, a high-brow-born San Franciscan who changes his name to Alexander and conducts a band with a whole new sound - Swing! And just as Grant meets with musical successes and failures, he smolders and is occasionally scorched by Stella Kirby (Alice Faye), his lead singer. Also featuring the delightful Don Ameche as Grant's romantic competitor, a wonderfully comic Jack Haley and then newcomer Ethel Merman, this musical treasure is a perfect addition to any collection of film classics.

5 out of 5 stars Alexander's - still a great musical entertainment 69 years on.......2007-06-07

Alexander's Ragtime Band was a huge production for 20th Century Fox in 1938 and it still looks it all these years later. It it incredibly musical , packed full of songs and is extremely dramatic and touching - it is still highly entertaining and Tyrone Power, Alice Faye, Don Ameche & Ethel Merman do some of their very best screen work in this film.
It also boast an excellent supporting cast and Paul Hurst and David Carradine to name but two are great. This film has been giving me a lump in my throat since I first saw it on BBC Two in the late 1960 's ( it was the first Fox film shown on British television ) and the taxi cab scene towards the end still gets me. It is a wonderul example of "everything" coming together in a movie and delivering and although it is probably corny by today's standards I wish there were more movies like it.
This film knocks so many raved about musicals off the list - it is unpretentious , entertaining and incredibly touching.
Thank goodnes it finally made it to DVd - not the best transfer but the negative for ARB is worn as Fox forever used it to reprint from over 30 years. The extras are good - original trailer is great as is the newsreel of the London premiere with Gracie Fields .

5 out of 5 stars Another Faye, Ameche, and Power classic.......2007-05-12

This trio teams up again, as In Old Chicago and Sally, Irene, and Mary, for a great old movie classic. Vaudville comedian Eddie Collins appears in all three. In this film, he plays Corporal Collins in the army barracks scene, wrestling with his t-shirt.

5 out of 5 stars Alexander's Ragtime Band...or is it Alec's? No, Alex's...wait, it's Roger's...right???.......2007-04-12

I love this movie. I have never thought that Fox musicals were all that great (you want GOOD musicals, you go to MGM) but I love them because they usually have very enjoyable stories and acting. ALEXANDER'S RAGTIME BAND is no exception. The actors are great, the story is great, the sets are beautiful, and you just CAN'T beat that Irving Berlin music score. Tyrone Power is this guy who is starting a band, and he encounters Alice Faye in a bar by accident, because he stole her sheet music. And then she joins his band as a singer, and they eventually fall in love, despite their early arguments. Only the piano player of the band (Don Ameche) is already in love with her. Just read the summary on the back of the DVD. The extras on this DVD are great. There are deleted scenes, an A&E documentary of Alice Faye's life, the original theatrical trailer, and much, much more. I thought the picture quality was great! I didn't notice any scratches on the print, or white blobby faces or static or anything. I have yet to see a classic Fox movie with perfect picture quality, anyways. This is a really great DVD. I reccomend buying it and the movie is superb. However, if you can't stand Ethel Merman, just skip over her musical numbers, and you really won't miss much of the story. They're nice numbers, though. I think Ethel Merman's great!

And here are some other great musicals of the Golden Age that I HIGHLY reccomend!!

1.Hello Frisco Hello

2.Born to Dance

3.Kid Millions

4.My Lucky Star

5.Broadway Melody of 1936 - My very favorite movie and a musical you're sure to love!

5 out of 5 stars Irving Berling at His Best!.......2007-02-12

I'll keep my review brief. I'm not sure what the previous reviewers were referring to in regards to picture & sound quality. Both are excellent and most likely transferred from first generation master tape. The music and singing are terrific. An appearance from a young Ethel Merman was a great surprise. Tyrone Power is as charming & handsome as ever. Beautiful Alice Faye is in fine vocal form with several classic songs. Don Ameche is as suave & debonair as always. A nice romantic triangle between the three keeps the plot and songs moving along at a good pace. I think this is Ms. Faye's finest performance next to "In Old Chicago", in which she wowed me by singing my state song "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny." A great family movie showcasing the amazing Irving Berlin's talent.

5 out of 5 stars Alexander's Ragtime Band.......2007-01-15

I ordered this for a friend and she really likes it. She has watched it several times since receiving it.

A fast-paced sci-fi adventure, Coyote Ragtime Show (2006) is clearly aimed at fans of Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. Super-criminal "Mister" busts out of prison, determined to reclaim the 10 billion "Space Dollar" horde of Pirate King Bruce Dockley. But Mister doesn't want the loot for himself--he wants to get it to Dockley's daughter Franca. And the swag is hidden on the planet Graceland, which is slated for destruction. Investigators Angelica and Chelsea are hot on Mister's tail, as are the 12 android assassins of Madame Marciano. The filmmakers cut from chase to battle to chase with barely a pause for breath. Coyote Ragtime lacks a strong central character to anchor the adventures, the way Spike and Vash did in Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. The episodes careen along so wildly, the results feel exhausting, rather than exciting. Some viewers may be offended by the depiction of Swamp Gordon, an African-American pirate turned revivalist preacher. (Rated TV 14 VL, suitable for ages 16 and older: violence, profanity, risqué humor, ethnic stereotypes, alcohol and tobacco use)--Charles Solomon

      3 out of 5 stars Ragtime, Bebop, I Know What You're Thinking.......2007-03-24

First of all things I'd like to explain exactly what Coyote Ragtime Show is all about and then I'll get into the comparisons. Plain and simple this anime is about a bunch of Space fugitives searching for a very specific treasure of 10 billion space dollars. This treasure also happens to involve a little girl with the key to it all hanging on her neck. Her late father Pirate King Bruce was killed in front of her by a crazy woman named Madam Marciano who of course wants the money. Marciano leads a group of relentless cyborg young girls called the 12 sisters that will do anything for her. The past now brings us to the present to a man named Mister who was Bruce's buddy and now the guardian of his daughter Franka.

Mister has a number of people looking for him but the biggest is no doubt Marciano and the second being Angelica Burns. Burns is a private investigator from "The Milky Way Federation", she's pretty ticked but you can't blame her she's been chasing mister for the past four years and has now cornered him in prison. The first episode of Coyote Ragtime is great, truly amazing and surprising but sort of gets predictable as it goes on. The thing though is that Mister is in prison but has to get out before Marciano comes in with her crazy cyborgs. This anime also involves a long laundry list of characters. A couple of them are strong and the others not really cutting it.

Now if you know your music history you know that just like Bebop Ragtime is also considered fine music. Ragtime was not as popular though everybody must have heard a Scott Joplin piece once or twice. I have to thank Cowboy Bebop for opening more of the world to the beautiful Bebop cause Charlie Parker needs to be known. This is where Coyote Ragtime messes up, as soon as you hear the title you automatically think this show will bite off of the amazing classic Cowboy Bebop. Though this anime has nowhere near the quality of C.B it is almost nothing like it. If anything the story will remind you of One Piece because of all the pirate themes. Yeah the whole space thing is similar but not quite the same.

This anime has beautiful animation and the story has potential to go somewhere but it has one major problem. There are too many characters and not enough definitive ones. The story has some good guys and some bad guys but it doesn't have that one character that you love or has a great presence. One example is the large number of the 12 sisters, do you really need all those cyborgs. In a few years when this series is said and done I don't think anyone will really remember any of these guys. If the question of who is the best anime villain or hero comes up nobody in here will be mentioned. Mister actually almost has the makings of a great character but it doesn't really seem like he'll develope. At the end of the day this series has A+ animation, C+ writing, and D character development which to me gives it a 3 star start and look first volume that's worth watching.

4 out of 5 stars RAIDERS OF GRACELAND.......2007-03-05

Detective Angelica Burns has tracked an infamous criminal named "Mister" to a godforsaken desert planet right out of the novel Dune called Sandville. There's even giant sandworms that move around beneath the surface, but instead of being attracted to sound, they are repelled by it. The ironic thing is that Mister is currently in a high security prison, but Angelica doesn't know his true identity. So the process of finding him among all the inmates is going to take a while. But time is running out because she has a nasty suspicion that Mister's friends are planning on breaking him out. She's not the only one wanting to get her hands on Mister. Marciano, an operative for the Criminal Guild, has sent her "Twelve Sisters", twelve android assassins, whose maid uniforms and cute appearance belie the fact that they are heartless killers, are also sent to the prison to find Mister. What seems to be driving all this action is the fact that Mister knows the location of an enormous treasure on the planet Graceland. A planet which is due to be annihilated by the government within a week.

Coyote Ragtime has a pretty big cast of characters but the writers were able to give most of them distinct personalities on this first volume. This is probably the first and biggest hurdle an ensemble type show has to get over. Fortunately, Coyote passes with flying colors. To me, the feel of the show is very much like the original Star Wars film that came out in 1977: an adventurous romp with a memorable group of characters. The comraderie of each group really shines. It also reminds me of a cross between Cowboy Bebop and a less serious Eureka Seven. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that there was good chemistry among the voice actors while they were recording this. Everything just flows so well. The animation is also first rate and equals anything on film. Check this series out if you like action, a big cast, and comedy.

      Extras:
Pretty thin. Production Art, Clean Opening/Closing Animations. As usual with most of the recent ADV releases, there are no inserts within the DVD case.

2 out of 5 stars waste of time.......2007-01-15

this show is nothing like cowboy bebop, or trigun, or outlaw star. why? those are actually good series. id like to tell you how much of a waste of time this series is and bash it till i use every negative word in the english language, but ill try to be objective. the animation is good, after the first episode. the cell count lowers from that point on and it becomes just like every other series. the plot is predictable. it just becomes another point a to point b story. the characters are just terrible (if you do happen to watch this wait till you see the preist Swamp). their character design looks uninspired. No matter how many episodes you watch, they never evoke empathy. it gets to point to where you ask yourself why your watching this show in the first place. if you want to watch something about space watch planetes or marsdaybreak. if your looking for another cowboy bebop, well, too bad. your looking in the wrong place.

      5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2007-01-08

Even if ADV only did half of the job that the fan-subbing crowd did with this show, it will still be worth watching. Are you a fan of shows like Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and Black Lagoon? Coyote Ragtime Show is the latest series in that vein, and as such, is well worth your time. If you're considering this as a purchase for a younger audience, you may want to rent this DVD or a DVD from one of the shows I mentioned above in order to get a feel for the character and content of Coyote Ragtime. If I had to take a stab at where it would fit on the MPAA ratings scale, I'd suggest PG-13.

As always, please enjoy your anime responsibly-- use subtitles. Manufacturers will not be held responsible for health problems resulting from watching anime in a dubbed format.

      5 out of 5 stars Studio Classics - That's Entertainment.......2007-07-04

No - Studio Classics are not the great musicals of MGM, but it is a group of great movies from Hollywood. All but four of the movies are Oscar winners in a major category and four best picture winners. You need to like the black and white movies of the late 30's into the 40's and the All-Star color classics of the 50's. Not certain I'd call this a "collection," since it is a pretty eclectic group of movies, but a treasure chest of viewing pleasure for those that can watch a great movie again and again. Bring on the popcorn!

5 out of 5 stars A good collection of movies from 1937-1969.......2007-01-27

The previous reviewer asked an excellent question - Why part with all of that money if you don't even know what films are included? So, I looked it up and here's the list:

Alexander's Ragtime Band (1938), Nominated for Best Picture

How Green Was My Valley (1941), Won Best Picture
The Black Swan (1942), Tyrone Power & Maureen O'Hara in a pirate film.
Orchestra Wives (1942), Stars Glenn Miller and his band.
The Ox-Bow Incident(1943), Nominated for Best Picture starring Henry Fonda.
The Song of Bernadette (1943), Nominated for Best Picture, won Best Actress.
The Keys of the Kingdom (1944), Gregory Peck nominated for Best Actor

All About Eve (1950), Won Best Picture, helped revive Bette Davis' career
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), A terrific early sci-fi film
Titanic (1953), stars Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck as a feuding couple aboard the doomed ship.
Three Coins in the Fountain (1954), Nominated best picture
Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing (1955), Nominated best picture
Anastasia (1956), Ingrid Bergman won Best Actress as the amnesiac heiress to the Russian throne.
The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit (1956), Gregory Peck as a businessman trying to balance his career and home life.
An Affair to Remember (1957), Cary Grant & Deborah Kerr in a great romance
Desk Set (1957), One of Tracy & Hepburn's better films.
The Three Faces of Eve (1957), Best Actress award for Joanne Woodward as a woman with three personalities.
Peyton Place (1957),classic melodrama and Nominated Best Picture
The River's Edge (1957, An OK Western/film noir combo.
The Inn of the Sixth Happiness (1958),stars Ingrid Bergman as a missionary in China.
The Best of Everything (1959), 1950's view of the world of secretaries. Joan Crawford as an evil boss.
The Diary of Anne Frank (1959), Nominated Best Picture, won 3 others.

Return to Peyton Place (1961), a mediocre sequel to the original.
Zorba the Greek (1964), Nominated Best Picture, stars Anthony Quinn.
Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964), Bette Davis in a great bizarre tale.
How to Steal a Million (1966), classic 60's comedy with Peter O'Toole & Audrey Hepburn.
Two for the Road (1967), Nominated for best screenplay, great love story told in flashbacks.
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969), Best Actress for Maggie Smith as a schoolteacher with unconventional ideas.

All in all, this is a good collection of 40 critically acclaimed and award-winning films from the years 1937-1969 that continue to be popular. They encompass all genres, and I count only two real clunkers among them - "Return to Peyton Place" and "The Rains Came". There are a lot of Academy Award winners among them - and I'm not talking just Best Song or Best Cinematography either. I counted 15 nominations for best picture, and a few actually won the top award. With the price heavily discounted as it is, it works out to six dollars per classic movie, which is a pretty good deal.

My impression is that this is just a DVD bundle, not a collector's edition of any kind. Thus I would not anticipate any extras other than those that are already on the included individual DVD's containing the movies themselves.

5 out of 5 stars What is this?.......2007-01-20

You would think for five hundred and fifty five dollars there would at least be a list of the movies included!!

            5 out of 5 stars teaching tool.......2004-11-23

If your style is blues/swing/jazz with more than a touch of slide and alternate tuning, and you wish to move from intermediate to advanced playing, this will do the trick. But be under no illusions - to get the best out of these lessons, you have to practice. Mr Dowling is an experienced teacher as well as a great player. He makes no representations that there is an easy way to play this style of guitar. Whilst he walks you through the more difficult passages, he makes it clear that practice makes perfect. I venture to suggest that the companion book/cd is a must if you want to get the best out of these lessons. Also get Bottomlands and String Crazy and while you are at it, get a copy of Two of a Kind with Pat Donoghue. They are packed with great music, particularly Two of a Kind. This is not a Mike Dowling promo. It is just that if you are serious about extending you playing to emulate one of the finest players around, then the investment of less than $100 is small change. I am about half way through this, and already I notice it has taken my playing to a new level and to a greater understanding of this music. Unfortunately so many of the video lessons fall short. This delivers but it requires you do some work. Some of the playing takes some real effort - maybe it was me, but I needed some serious wood-shedding to get the 'In the Mood' roll under my fingers on Nitpickin', but was tickled pink when I did - in fact I used it with a bit of a twist when working through an impro of 'I saw Mummy kissing Santa Claus' with a pleasing result. What I appreciated best about this is that Mike takes the time to get the techniques down. This gives a solid grounding, whilst remaining interesting and challenging. The concert footage and camera angles are great. I will do an update on this when I have worked through it. I reckon that will take most of the winter, maybe more. By then I should be getting near to ready for one of Mike's camps or Wind River lessons - I've got the fly rod packed! This is highly recommended if you are a serious player and want to do the work. Mind you it is pretty good to have a Mike Dowling concert on tap as well!

5 out of 5 stars Tasty guitar playing, GREAT DVD is a 5 star combo!!.......2003-12-11

Unlike many DVD lessons which are merely video transfers this lesson features audiophile sound and fantastic image quality. Also during the lessons you can use the remote to view either his left or right hand closeups or full view....amazing! there are also bonus songs and the option to view the performance only!!! whether you want to watch this guitarist just play his tunes or get a wonderful lesson this DVD is the real deal ...
Mike mixes up blues, rags, travis style pieces with some jazzy influences on these tunes: Roslie, Nitpickin, Minor Thing, Johnson city Rag, Fishin In The Wind, Bottleneck March, Bottomlands, String Crazy, and WOrld Of Hurt. Many of these are from his wonderful "Bottomlands" CD. enjoy...this guy has an unbelievable touch in any style!
