The first movie produced by Afghanistan filmmakers after the fall of the Taliban, Osama is a searing portrait of life under the oppressive fundamentalist regime. Because women are not allowed to work, a widow disguises her young daughter (Marina Golbahari) as a boy so they won't starve to death. Simply walking the streets is frightening enough, but when the disguised girl is rounded up with all the boys in the town for religious training, her peril becomes absolutely harrowing. Golbahari's face--beautiful but taut with terror--is riveting. The movie captures both her plight and the miseries of daily life in spare, vivid images. At one point, her mother is nearly killed for exposing her feet while riding on the back of a bicycle; for the entire scene, the camera shows only her feet, with the spokes of the wheel radiating out behind as she lowers her burka over them. --Bret Fetzer

Of all the documentaries that deal with the horrible events of September 11, 2001, National Geographic's two-part, 3-1/2-hour program Inside 9/11 is the only one to trace the evolution of Osama bin Laden's reign of terror from its origins in the Soviet-Afghan war of the early 1980s to 9/11 and beyond. Presented as a comprehensive timeline that culminates in the hijacking of four passenger jets (including those that destroyed the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York), the program incorporates news footage and archival photos, computer graphics, thoroughly researched documentation, and eyewitness interviews to build an epic chronology of Islamic fundamentalism, carried out by radical sects which, in bin Laden's own words, "love death" with a religious fervor that was largely dismissed, in the early stages of terrorist assembly, by American intelligence services. The stage is set for bin Laden's well-financed orchestration of al Qaeda activities, and Inside 9/11 reaches a factual fever pitch as it focuses on the major players (including 9/11 architect Khalil Shaikh Mohammed, hijacker pilots Mohamed Atta and Ziad Jarrah, and other "sleeper cell" terrorists) as the countdown to 9/11 continues. What emerges from this minute-by-minute account is, in the harsh light of history, a much-needed understanding of how 9/11 happened, the conditions that led to lapses in CIA and FBI cooperation, airport security, and the "holy war" that bin Laden had so effectively precipitated. Subsequent, post-9/11 suicide missions are also included in this expansive chronology, making it potently clear that the war on terror will continue, and in some respects has only just begun. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD and an excellent review........2007-01-14

The DVD is ecellent. The review I refer to is written by KHEMIN on this page. It could have easily been the epilogue for this DVD. And it is not a minority view. Caesar's (another reviewer) assertion that the CIA hung out in his town keeping an eye out wouldn't surprise me in the least, considering the crew that hangs out there. I also have no doubt either that after September 11, 2001, there have been more CIA assigned to your neighborhood Caesar. Get used to it, pal.

5 out of 5 stars In-depth Examination of Events.......2007-01-09

The documentary is a very in-depth examination of the events of September the 11th as well as the build-up to the attacks. It is a 5-star National Geographic production. I previewed parts of it to my high school classes and they were completely engaged. Additional bonus features that could assist with the use of the video in a classroom environment could have been useful. It's a long watch but worth ever minute.

5 out of 5 stars excellent addition to anyone's collection.......2007-01-05

this dvd pretty much out shines all the rest out there. it tells everything about 9/11, including very interesting news of pre-9/11. worth every penny, and will be a very historical documentary to show your kids/grandkids in the future.

5 out of 5 stars A very valuable resource.......2006-11-08

There are lots of documentaries about the events of 9/11, and all of them have their strengths and weaknesses. This one has weaknesses, too, but I don't think they matter much. It was made with a purpose in mind: to examine the evolution of bin Laden's operation beginning with the resistance to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1980 and ending with the events of 9/11. It is not-- and it's not intended to be-- a comprehensive overview of US foreign policy, the operation of the CIA, the rise of fundamentalist Islam, or anything else. Rather, it's the narrative of the time line that ends with the hijackings on 9/11.

It's composed of news footage, still photos, and interviews with eyewitnesses and participants. The end result is a sequential narrative explaining how 9/11 happened and suggesting why the intelligence community failed to understand what was happening. As is the case with most National Geographic documentaries, the production values on this DVD are very high.

Is this the last word about 9/11? Of course not, and I'd be amazed if the writers and producers thought it was. Rather, it's one resource that's very valuable for anyone who wants to understand those events. There are no doubt other resources, but that doesn't detract from the value of this one.

5 out of 5 stars The Facts of 9/11 "Propaganda" only to Enemies of Good.......2006-10-30

Of all the many many documentaries recounting the despicable acts of mass murder committed in the name of Allah on that day, this is by far the most comprehensive and the most unflinching. Because of this, those whose mindsets side more with that of the terrorists will find this factual documentary somewhat distressing in its raw recitation of events. And perhaps none more so than "Caesar" in his review of Sept. 17, 2006. If only he found at least as troubling the carnage, bloodshed, and destruction deliberately perpetrated by his Islamic buddies against civilian populations. But, more on this in a bit.

As regards this extraordinary video, from the perspectives of air traffic controllers, FAA officials, NORAD and NEADS, the air crews and passengers on board each of the four doomed flights, to the testimonies of the witnesses, participants, firefighters, and all the heroes on and near Ground Zero, this is the singular documentary that takes you minute by minute through the hell deliberately planned and perpetrated by those whose religion had them believing that the execution of such hellish bloodshed granted them virgin-laden heaven. (and no... this is not the "propaganda" or view of the documentary, but instead my own conclusions drawn on many years of personal investigation of Islam).

Anyone who, like "Caesar" here, could watch this fully factual account and then call such a splendid documentary "goody-goody propaganda" "try(ing) to portray the US as good guys being hit by the bad guys..." reveals instead either their rabid religious fanaticism or otherwise their own anti-American hatred for so apparently condoning such ghastly blood-soaked horrors as the acts of "good guys" retaliating against "bad guys."

While "Caesar" (how telling a nickname) attempts to school us ignorant Americans on our country's past political-policy foibles, yet he fails to mention the billions in financial and economic aid we have given the Islamic nations, the millions in military equipment and technical advisory assistance provided them as they struggled against invading Soviet forces and/or other foreign enemies attempting to annex and rule over sovereign Islamic nations, the ousting from Kuwait of the brutal armed forces of an Islamic fascist dictator who had invaded and then "enjoyed" weeks of the metaphoric and all too literal raping in this tiny Islamic nation while openly looting, terrorizing, butchering, torturing, and murdering its citizens while none of its Islamic neighbors lifted so much as a finger to intervene, but instead begged the United Nations and the U.S. to solve their problems for them... which we did! And these are just a tiny listing of the far greater acts we have done for the cause of justice and good, and all of it on Islam's behalf. And yet, 9/11 is only the latest and greatest terrorist massacre by which we continue to be repaid by the bloodthirsty religion of Islam for all we have done and continue to do on its behalf.

"Caesar" also glaringly omits and all too conveniently ignores radical Islam's blood-soaked history and their on-going policy of religiously motivated bomb blasts, hijackings, kidnappings, tortures, rapes, gang rapes, female circumcisions, sawing and/or hacking off people's limbs and heads, mutilations, and always... mass murder after mass murder after yet more mass murder all perpetrated against civilian populations worldwide, including those of their own religion, and all thanks to Islam's foundational tenets of blood lust that makes all such horrors not only acceptable but actually laudable, eternally rewardable, and thus... forever inevitable.

True, all religions have their radicals and fanatics. But none deliberately attract, nurture, and encourage terrorist fanatics more than does Islam. And none preaches genocide against the entire Jewish race/nation and all non-Islamic "infidels" in the name of God more than does Islam. And it is how this video accurately documents for the entire world only this latest and greatest mass butchery in the name of Allah that probably motivates "Caesar" most to attempt such blatant anti-U.S. propagandizing here. And for those who would disagree, I challenge "Caesar" or anyone else to provide us any reliable evidence of even a single factual error in this documentary.

What I think "Caesar" fears most is that such a powerful documentary as this might add to the growing world view that despite the constant rhetoric of Islam as a religion of "peace," the ever-escalating terrorist acts of its leaders and constituents in the name of Islamic religion reveal the exact opposite to be the true case. Maybe it's just me, but I'm thinking any religion that so encourages its hormone-driven young men to blow themselves up with as many "infidels" as they can so as to spend eternity in orgiastic sex with 72 virgins deserves to be fully prosecuted, at the very least on charges of "conspiracy to commit (mass) murder"!

And one thought that just hit me: If more and more Islamics continue to either commit or condone such bloodshed and with the full approval of their Islamic leaders, which god are they truly honoring and emulating: Allah -- the Creator of Life; or instead, Iblis (Satan), the Destroyer of it? By their fruits are they known, after all.

And on the question of whom and what Islamics most worship and adore, permit me to close this review as also does this wonderful documentary, by quoting one of Islam's most renowned clerics:

"We love death. The U.S. loves Life. That is the big difference between us." -- Osama bin Laden

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Vision of a Horrifying Regime's Role in Ruining the Life of One Child.......2007-04-29

Osama
As a child, I was told that "elegance" is actually achieved through "simplicity." I was reminded of the integral relationship between these two seemingly disparate concepts while viewing Siddiq Barmak's remarkable OSAMA for the first time. The film is elegantly composed and framed, but the reason the film's "text" is so powerful, I think, is because it is told with such exquisite simplicity. The film is the first of its kind, a film shot wholly in post-Taliban Afghanistan with Afghani people starring in it, with Afghani production members, and with an Afghani writer/director. Also, it is a true story based on the lives of actual people living in Afghanistan The story is told through the eyes of a beautiful young 12-year-old girl who is forced to cut off her hair and don male clothing to help her mother and grandmother survive. Women are not allowed to leave the home without a man. And, these women have no such man since the father died in the war. So, the young girl becomes a boy in appearance and is re-named "Osama." The film follows this young girl's dangerous life as she is the victim of a string of atrocities when her true gender is discovered. The elegance and beauty of her story is entirely moving because of its genuine, unpretentious simplicity. You will forever be haunted by the sadness of her great, dark eyes as her destiny is lost in the "axis of evil."

4 out of 5 stars Osama.......2007-03-27

This film is a wake up call to make you aware of why we are helping in Afghanistan to fight the Taliban. It is an emotional film and will make you have great compassion for the people in Afghanistan and dislike the actions of the Taliban.

4 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking.......2007-03-15

This movie is visually stunning and highly entertaining. The ending is particularly devastating, specially in light of the fact that the story is factual. Watch it only if you can stomach the brutal treatment of women by the Talaban.

5 out of 5 stars A Sad But Powerful Movie..........2007-03-10

I show this movie to my class when I teach international relations. Without fail, Osama has an impact on people when they watch it. It is shot on sight in Kabul, Afghanistan, so when you watch it you're viewing a frame of what it is like to be in this country, after nearly three decades of war and invasions.

The film depicts the life of a young Afghan girl, at age 12, who (along with her widowed mother) try to cope with what passes for a life in Kabul after the Taliban have seized power. Her mother loses her job at a local hospital, as the Taliban have banished women from schools, the workplace, and any allowance for public travel or appearance without accompaniment of a male relative. To counter this, the mother devises a plan to dress her daughter like a boy, so she can get a job and help provide for her family. The results must be seen to be believed and understood.

Ultimately, Osama is a terrible indictment of the deep misogynism of the Taliban and its variant of religious fundamentalism. More precisely, it illustrates what it is like to live in this kind of society, especially for women and young girls, and the effect it can have on the human psyche. This is a highly recommended movie for anyone that takes an interest in Afghanistan.

5 out of 5 stars Worse than fascism.......2007-03-01

The film transports on back into the worst mentality of Biblical times, or into a caricature of such mentality. Hard to watch the film passively, so strongly is the message given. One sees that the hateful Nazis were not the worst, believers with Taliban mentality are the worst: there, all citizens are totally enslaved on a daily basis, and the women far, far worse than the men. Such movements can only grow in a field of abject ignorance, in a climate where there are Koran Schools instead of education. In this respect, read Siba Shakib's "Nach Afghanistan kommt Gott nur noch zum weinen", wherein she portrays the 'liberating act' for females under strict Islam as being forced by the Russians into schools in Kabul to learn to read and write. To read, write and think for oneself frees one from the mindless edicts of the authoritarian, obedience-teaching, fundamentalist mullas.

Description

"Meeting Osama Bin Laden" is a unique biography of one of the world's most notorious figures. Of those who have met Osama Bin Laden, few have dared to talked about him--until now. "Meeting Osama Bin Laden" use first-person accounts to trace the inflectional events in Bin Laden's life, from his privileged childhood in Saudi Arabia to his battles with the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, culminating in the events leading up to September 11, 2001. With more than a dozen interviews, including his grade school teacher, family friends, fellow Al Qaeda soldiers, and Western journalists, this documentary provides extraordinary insight into the man who masterminded the most deadly terrorist act of our times.

5 out of 5 stars The Look Inside.......2007-05-01

PBS's "Meeting Osama Bin Laden" is a well-made documentary, giving insight into the life of one of the most sought-after terrorists of our time. Well researched and including interviews with people who have met or spent time with bin Laden, the film portrays bin Laden as a normal, peaceful man, who grew up as a withdrawn, quiet and shy child. What made bin Laden who he is today? This documentary attempted to aswer it.

Many books were written about Hitler, Himmler and other evil mongers in our history, but none of them managed to point at one event, or even a series of events that could be identified as the turning point for these people, a turning point leading them into committing despicable crimes. Same goes for bin Laden. Raised in a rich family, receiving good schooling, I couldn't see any triggers that would have moved Osama to become so filled with hate that he issued a religious proclamation authorizing the killing of all Americans, including women and children.

Granted, there are several situations in which one could see that Osama was shunned by even his own state and his own family, which in turn could make him bitter, but no event so big that would justify such pathological hatred. Like Hitler, after this documentary, I see bin Laden as a sociopath and a megalomaniac with incredible charisma, who was in the right place at he right time. Naturally, further research is needed, but this documentary is great for initial studies into the life and mind of the world's worst terrorist.

1 out of 5 stars Excellent subject, good scenery, God-awful commentator.......2007-06-18

After viewing the DVD I found the editorial review to be mostly puffery. Peter Arnett's "personal odyssey" in Afghanistan seemed to consist mostly of bouncing along rough boulder-filled roads in an SUV, looking for scenic places or war torn buildings to be filmed in front of. His commentary, was at best, mundane. Mr. Arnett actions and words indicated to me that he cares only for his preconceived ideas, and is not one whit interested in the Afghan people, their history, culture, or for that matter, how more than twenty years of war have devastated that country. His conduct reminded me of an "ugly American", even though Mr. Arnett is not. Definitely not recommended.
