Originally broadcast as a 50-minute drama on Philco Television Playhouse in 1953, Marty ensured Paddy Chayefsky's status as one of the greatest writers of television's golden age. When Chayefsky, director Delbert Mann, and actor Ernest Borgnine reunited for this 90-minute film version, the play had been polished with extra scenes, further perfecting Chayefsky's timeless study of loneliness and heartbreak. And the film, in which Borgnine excels as the single, 35-year-old "fat and ugly" butcher Marty Pilletti, received well-deserved OscarsĀ® for Best Picture, Director, Actor, and Screenplay. Although Chayefsky's central theme is the pain of being unwanted (as felt by Marty himself as well as his elderly Aunt Catherine, who's become a burden to her married daughter), the film is never somber or depressing, and achieves a rare quality of honesty, humor, and hopefulness without resorting to artifice or sentiment.
Marty's just about given up on love when he meets plain-looking Clara (Betsy Blair), a 29-year-old teacher who's endured similar cycles of rejection. Much of Marty explores the simple decency of these characters, their admirable qualities and mutual connection, and the slow escalation of self-esteem that will hold them together. Marty is a supremely compassionate film, but it's also an entertaining one, trimmed (like a good butcher's meat) of any dramatic fat. And although Blair (who earned an Oscar nomination) is superb in her role, it's worth noting that she's more conventionally "attractive" than Nancy Marchand (late of The Sopranos), who played Clara with arguably greater authenticity in the original 1953 telecast. --Jeff Shannon

If you were to argue that Mel Brooks's Young Frankenstein ranks among the top-ten funniest movies of all time, nobody could reasonably dispute the claim. Spoofing classic horror in the way that Brooks's previous film Blazing Saddles sent up classic Westerns, the movie is both a loving tribute and a raucous, irreverent parody of Universal's classic horror films Frankenstein (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935). Filming in glorious black and white, Brooks re-created the Frankenstein laboratory using the same equipment from the original Frankenstein (courtesy of designer Kenneth Strickfaden), and this loving attention to physical and stylistic detail creates a solid foundation for nonstop comedy. The story, of course, involves Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) and his effort to resume experiments in re-animation pioneered by his late father. (He's got some help, since dad left behind a book titled How I Did It.) Assisting him is the hapless hunchback Igor (Marty Feldman) and the buxom but none-too-bright maiden Inga (Teri Garr), and when Frankenstein succeeds in creating his monster (Peter Boyle), the stage is set for an outrageous revision of the Frankenstein legend. With comedy highlights too numerous to mention, Brooks guides his brilliant cast (also including Cloris Leachman, Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars, and Gene Hackman in a classic cameo role) through scene after scene of inspired hilarity. Indeed, Young Frankenstein is a charmed film, nothing less than a comedy classic, representing the finest work from everyone involved. Not one joke has lost its payoff, and none of the countless gags have lost their zany appeal. From a career that includes some of the best comedies ever made, this is the film for which Mel Brooks will be most fondly remembered. Befitting a classic, the Special Edition DVD includes audio commentary by Mel Brooks, a "making of" documentary, interviews with the cast, hilarious bloopers and outtakes, and the original theatrical trailers. No video library should be without a copy of Young Frankenstein. And just remember--that's Fronkensteen. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Mel Brooks' monstrously crazy tribute to Mary Shelley's classic pokes hilarious fun at just about every Frankenstein movie ever made. Summoned by a will to his late grandfather's castle in Transylvania, young Dr. Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) soon discovers the scientist's step-by-step manual explaining how to bring a corpse to life. Assisted by the hunchback Igor (Marty Feldman) and the curvaceous Ings (Teri Garr), he creates a monster (Peter Boyle) who only wants to be loved.

dear 20th century fox..............2007-07-03
To the marketing idiots at 20th Century Fox: don't worry, I'll wait till you maroons give us an anamorphic transfer. What year is this???, oh, yeah, 2007!
One of the best movies of ALL TIME.......2007-07-03
If you don't like "Young Frankenstein," you need therapy. And this special edition is a wonderful way to celebrate an all-time classic that has endured, despite its lack of car chases, shootouts, and helicopters.
Either you like it or you don't.......2007-07-03
I like it and watch it a few times a year so I guess I'm getting my monies worth...
What the Heck !?!?!?!?!?!?.......2007-06-28
I usually love Mel Brooks movies and I'm a huge fan of Get Smart from TV - I even have the box set :) But this movie sucked! I wasn't even born when it was made and it felt like all the jokes were so cliched when I watched it. Now there could be 2 reasons for that - Number 1 is that this film was so influential that every other movie copied it so I had already heard the jokes a million times before or Number 2 - The jokes actually were cliched. Either way I didn't really enjoy this like I wanted to. I'm still keeping it though - although if I run out of room in my new DVD holder this is going in the trash first thing.
you can laugh too much.......2007-06-11
Is this movie the product of a genius I don't know I'm not a genius but I did find it the funniest movie I ever saw.
Is this movie well made I don't know I don't make comedies but it is the funniest comedy I've seen in the last fifty years.
Does the story stick to the book yes. The book is rather simple in principle and without a lot of pedantry describes the power of a dream that comes true. Young Frankenstein takes not only the book Frankenstein and gives it some room to grow it gives vent to all those silly horror movies of the same names. Don't get me wrong please Young Frankenstein is silly but not stupid it comes from a lot of hard work I'm sure and the acting is the best I've ever seen like I say but the script they use does roll into the weeds from time to time.
The first time you see this one your sides hurt from all the timeless jokes scattered all the way through in what I'm sure the business calls perfect timing. I still don't know how they got the cast of stars to all fit on the same set to make this very funny movie but to this day after just seeing it again on TV I'm glad we have it around none the less as it is a classic even in it's own write and it's in black and white so you have to have been around long enough to have seen at least one of the early Horror movies we used to have to watch back in the good ol' days when every thing was in black and white and usually a horror on it's own don't you know.
The second time around you'll probably just laugh because it's a funny movie just that a very funny movie. Just the thing if you've seen everything before and perhaps need the last place you look for it to get you into the air.
This is a scary movie for kids though least I think so because the places the movie takes you can be a little foreign unless you've been to Transylvania and that's hardly likely for this audience but if you did come from there you never saw the places Young Frankenstein takes you I hope.
Frankenstein is a little over the top in this movie mostly from other old black and whites but almost believable in his complexity as a character I'm sure you'll admit.
His girlfriend has always been near the top of my most attractive women list and her acting is something you have to see for yourself to criticize .
There's a love interest in this one for Frankenstein and after a twist of fate more a thrust he gets the girl and the castle and the whole bowl of rice but with a lot of class that's rare and only found in this spoof of the Baron Von Frankenstein of many an imagination gone wild. She's played by Terry Garr the girl from Star Trek that ends up marrying the secret-agent from another planet with the cat that talked and the typewriter that doubled as secretary and the ... wasn't funny.
Egor the faithful servant of every Frankenstein we see on TV is played by Marty Feldman. A funny guy even in his own write Marty makes you laugh even when you're not looking and keeps the whole movie in the air all the time.
There's some cameos by most of the other funny men of the day and a whole lot of story for a comedy especially about such a difficult subject like Frankenstein so if you've got a book report to do you can always budget it as research because this movie made an awful lot of bigbucks and still does so there.

The Monterey International Pop Festival, the three-day event staged in 1967 that has become one of rock music's most famous and in some ways greatest concerts, gets the royal treatment with this three-disc boxed set.
Material on two of the three discs has already been widely available. Monterey Pop, D.A. Pennebaker's 79-minute, 1968 film, effectively sets the scene for the festival, which took place during the fabled "Summer of Love," when the hippie ethos was in its fullest flower, especially on the West Coast. And while not all the featured performances are thrilling, those that are--principally by the Who, Jimi Hendrix, and the amazing Ravi Shankar--are worth the price of admission, especially in the high-definition digital transfer and new 5.1 mix seen and heard here. The same can be said for Jimi Plays Monterey and Shake! Otis at Monterey, which appear in the boxed set on a separate disc and provide a much fuller look at Hendrix's and Otis Redding's incendiary sets (literally, in the former case).
Those two discs are also loaded with bonus features, including audio commentary by Pennebaker, festival producer Lou Adler (on Monterey Pop), and author Peter Guralnick (Shake!); audio-only remarks by some of the performers; photos; trailers; and other material. There's also a substantial booklet, filled with essays and photos. But it's the third disc, "The Outtake Performances," comprising some two hours of music that didn't make the final film edit, that will be of most interest to many viewers. The disc supplies a taste of some of the artists who didn't appear in Monterey Pop at all (the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Quicksilver Messenger Service), and a more complete look at some who did (the Who, Simon and Garfunkel, the Mamas and the Papas). A nice addition to an already very impressive DVD collection. --Sam Graham

Customer Reviews:
The Complete Monterey Pop Festival.......2007-06-28
It was 1967, the Summer of Love and "Sergeant Pepper's," a charged moment when rock'n'roll was evolving in daring new directions, fueled by psychedelic drugs, the sexual revolution, and a new generation finding its voice. Documentarian D.A. Pennebaker covers the Monterey Pop Festival like a blanket in this feature-length concert film--the first ever--filming everything and everyone, while showcasing landmark performances by immortals Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, and The Who, among others.
Revelatory performances........2007-01-07
The film restoration work looks and sounds magnificent. Eddie Kramer gets extra congratulations on the 5.1 audio mix. That said, the 3rd disc is mainly in stereo only.
Karen's review below is a bit harsh. If you actually listen to the main film's commentary, you will understand why more footage isn't available: Not every second of 3 days of performances were captured. Concert films did not exist as a genre at this time (see the annoyingly choppy 'Festival!' documenting Newport), so this was new territory and the point of the film was to make a document that gave an overall feel for the event and time. Pennebaker and his crew had to decide which songs to film, which seems to have been predetermined by Dylan's buddy Bob Neuwirth who was more familiar with the scene than the filmmaker. They would turn on a red light on stage to signal to start filming the next song. At some times, they didn't have a plan and the camera men would shoot at their discretion, so some performances may have been captured by only 1 camera and therefore considered not presentable. Also, film reels would end during performances and need to be changed (approx every 20 minutes), hence footage missing from two of Jimi's songs.
Regarding the lack of more outtake footage:
1. Your precious Janis and Big Brother's new manager Albert Grossman didn't allow them to be filmed the first day, but finally they were asked to play again the next day because of the crowd reaction and the desire to get something on film. The whole set could exist but I doubt it. Grossman and his need for control is probably to blame, and it's no coincidence that Woodstock's filmmakers were also refused to use her footage in the original release. She only appears now in the directors cut.
2. The Byrds set is extremely historic, and that is one that should have been included in whole if it exists.
3. The Who's set is only missing 'Pictures of Lily' not counting 'My Generation' which is in the proper film. It is on bootleg Who dvd's so why that wasn't included is inexplicable. I would have like to have seen all footage from each artist's set put together on the bonus disc including the songs included in whole or in part in the actual final film, so that it's all in one place. What we get is anything besides what made the final cut.
4. As far as Tiny Tim, yes his impromptu performances are annoying, but they are part of just that, impromptu candid backstage footage supplied as bonus, not part of the 2 hours of bonus footage. So, skip past it like I did and get over it.
5. Regarding the Grateful Dead, a small glimpse is seen at the beginning of the 'Jimi Plays Monterey' film, but the liner notes from the 4CD box set from 1992 tells us, that like Janis, the band and or management refused to allow any audio or visuals to be used. I assume they didn't like their performance, or wanted to control it like the rest of their own vault. The whole festival was for charity, as we also learn from the supplementary interviews, and the artists therefore had to sign waivers releasing the rights to their performances. My guess it the Dead refused to comply.
6.The real shame is that there is no footage of Lou Rawls' electrifying set, which would also show more of the diversity of genre's that were at the festival.
7. Charles Shaar Murray's commentary during the Hendrix film is actually quite insightful and entertaining. Yes, there are some funny comments about substances and clothing. He wrote a definitive biography of Jimi, and his commentary is well founded and gives context to why his perfomance at the festival was revolutionary.
That said, this is a definitive package, and a must own release for a serious rock collector's library.
Not complete.......2006-12-10
I know i give this five stars and it is worth the high price, but complete. Not even close. Since i first heard about montery pop on some vh1 thing years ago ive been interested in monterey pop. The fact that it was the first real festival, besides newport, and in my opinion the best.
I originally bought the vhs tape, and then the hard to find 4 disc box set, and then this 3 disc dvd. I even have a bootleg of the grateful deads performance there. It would just be a lot cooler if it was actually complete. Its just kinda of a tease to see one buffalo sprinfield song when you know they most likely have their whole performance on tape.
Jimi Hendrix plays Wild Thing at Monterey Pop.......2006-10-15
Unforgeteable performance, that I first watched in a movie theater in 1975. The sound in big space is much different, you hear the crakles of fire in the guitar, and the acoustic couplings between guitar and Marshalls are richer in tremeloes and vibrations. May be the remastering for DVD filtered too much, but unless you own a superb stereo equipment, you better watch it as a movie!
Everything I wanted.......2006-08-15
I have been looking for the Hendrix concert footage for awhile. This is worth the full price alone.

When egghead Scotty Smalls moves to town just before the summer vacation of 1962, his first priority is to make friends. He heads to the nearby sandlot only to humiliate himself before the local kids, but star player Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez befriends the awkward boy, teaches him the basics of baseball, and welcomes him to the team. It's a summer filled with camaraderie and fun until Smalls hits his first home run. Problem is, Smalls's home run sends his stepfather's "Babe Ruth" autographed baseball into a neighboring yard that's patrolled by a snarling, slobbering monster called "The Beast." Creativity reigns and hilarity ensues when the boys risk everything to retrieve the ball. A final heroic encounter with "The Beast" and his owner yields some very surprising results. Action, humor, and friendship permeate this 101-minute film appropriate for ages 5 and older. Rated PG due to name-calling and some pubescent behavior. --Tami Horiuchi

My grandson's favorite.......2007-05-22
He is 7. We watched it once awhile ago. He talked so much about that great movie with the big dog that I finally sent him one of his own!
A Classic, lots of laughs!.......2007-05-07
Great movie for a baseball lover or someone who loves to laugh!
I had this on VHS for a bit and was glad when it was releasedon DVD. Now it will last FOR-EV-ERR!
A funny and classic baseball-worship kind of movie.......2007-04-12
Scotty Smalls moves to Los Angeles in the early 60's just two weeks before the 5th grade school year ends, which isn't enough time to make friends before summer vacation. He's still getting used to his new step-father and doesn't know how to catch or throw a baseball, and to make matters worse doesn't even know who the "Great Bambino" is. Some of the neighborhood kids gather every day at "the sandlot," their own personal baseball kingdom, and he tries to casually join them. But it isn't until Bennie Rodriguez, the best and most ardent player of them all, asks him to join and gives him the confidence he needs to learn to play. It makes for the best summer of his life and lifelong friendships, especially when he unknowingly uses a baseball signed by Babe Ruth, and hits it over the fence into the yard of "The Beast," a huge baseball-eating dog.
This is one of those classic baseball-worship movies on a par with "Field of Dreams" and other favorites. Plus, it's a great family movie with few profanities - it's funny and the things the kids do and say resonate with everyone whether or not you grew up playing another sport or in another time period. My kids love to watch it regularly, and I'm impressed with how good some of the children actors are (James Earl Jones also has a bit part at the end). I especially like the scene where they play baseball against the "rich kids" on their real baseball field (mostly because it's the field where I played Little-League as a kid - which wasn't on the "rich" side of town and it's not really LA!), but my kids like the pool scene.
Excellent movie for young baseball players.......2007-03-31
Bought this for my 8 year old grandson for his birthday and although he never heard of it, he absolutely loved it and had to go out and buy the Sandlot 2 right away! Nice, clean, fun with a learning behind it (of course).
NOT A BASEBALL FAN, BUT GOOD MOVIE.......2007-03-26
IM NOT A BIG BASEBALL FAN SO TO ME THIS MOVIE WAS OK. THE ACTORS ARE REALLY GOOD AND THEY MAKE IT AN EXCITING MOVIE TO WATCH EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT A BASEBALL FAN! THE BEST PART IS THE "KISS"

A wimpy remake of an already anemic movie (the 1947 Rita Hayworth vehicle Down to Earth), this glitzy musical from 1980 improbably stars Olivia Newton-John as a heavenly muse sent here to help open a roller-derby disco. Gene Kelly is mixed up in this well-meaning but goofy effort to fuse nostalgia with late-'70s glitter-ball trendiness, and he looks just plain silly. Directed by Robert Greenwald, the film doesn't even work as decent kitsch. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Movie.......2007-05-17
I needed this so that I could do a drag song number for a show. The show was cancelled, but I loved the movie.
I'm Alive! (So it gets a 5).......2007-05-16
I have probably seen this movie well over 300 times. It was one of the first video cassettes in my family (back when a VCR was the size of a semi truck) and I have literally watched this movie over and over again.
I still have the sndtrk. on vinyl and I love all of the songs, especially the ones by ELO. I thought Gene Kelly was just magnificent and Olivia has one of the hottest boot collections around as you will see in the end segment. The script is totally cheesy, the effects are laughable and Jeff Beck is awful but this all adds to the charm.
This movie is just mad silly fun and so brilliant in that it captured all that the 80's were about. I love the dance sequences, especially when they are in the new wave clothing store with the lurex spider people. You will see Solid Gold dancers, Olivia in legwarmers, Gene Kelly in a rollerdisco and a glimpse into what record stores were like before they were what the are today.
I really, really love this movie and I am not a male in my 40's with a a lurking crush on Olivia. I'm a female in my 30's who grew up on this film and you need to own this if only to see the 9 muses come alive from the mural in Santa Monica. Or was it Venice Beach?
It isn't as bad as it originally was.......2007-05-11
Upon rewatching the dvd after initially catching this movie on TV many years ago, it's actually not that bad. I do have to say that the male lead is sorta bland (John Travolta he ain't) but Olivia Newton-John was at her best (singing and looks) in this movie.
It's a good movie to watch if you want spend an afternoon on the couch.
Movie from childhood.......2007-05-07
I like this movie for the nostalgia. The music and scenes throughout takes me back to when I first saw it.

Sharper and deeper than Robin Williams's previous road material, Live on Broadway is a mature comedian's view of all things to do with power, prejudice, and paranoia in the 21st century. On the anthrax scare of 2001: "The Senate cleared out of their building but told the rest of us, 'Get on with your normal lives!'" On his solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict over Jerusalem: "Time share!" On the pitfalls of America's deepening alliance with Britain: "The House of Commons is like Congress with a two-drink minimum." A viewer may have to slog through Williams's tedious breast fetishism, but patience is quickly rewarded with bitchy takes on Martha Stewart facing prison, solid satire about French existentialist judges at the Olympics, and subversive op-eds about the Bush administration's inability to clarify terrorist threats to the public ("Has the CIA become the Central Intuitive Agency?"). --Tom Keogh
Product Description
Recorded and broadcast live from New York City's Broadway Theater at the culmination of his historic 2002 sold-out tour, the Robin Williams "Live on Broadway" DVD finds the Oscar-winning actor/writer/comedian returning after 16 years to his stand-up roots to deliver what the Washington Post calls "...in its madcap way, a seminal cultural event."
"A report on the planet and a report from the planet for those watching from outer space," this DVD puts you front row at the comedy event - where "Williams pranced, flounced, minced, pounced, zigzagged, hip-hopped, whirled and twirled, talking nonstop about everything from surgically enhanced breasts to the great anthrax scare."
"Live on Broadway" captures the manic comic energy of Robin Williams in full hurrican force.

The Hairiest man alive is, coincedentally, the funniest man alive........2007-05-14
This is most likely the second funniest performance I have ever watched. It's amazing that this man can sweat through an hour and a half of constant hilarity. The noises reel made my stomach hurt. On a whole, this is good for anyone who likes to bellow like a charging rhino, or just laugh a lot.
awesome.......2007-04-10
If you love Robin Williams, this DVD is guaranteed to have you rolling in laughter!
Mr Robin Williams is briliant here.......2007-04-10
So far the best one man show I've ever seen.
Hilarious.......2007-04-01
WARNING: pause the show before you eat or drink anything or you're likely to choke from laughing! Robin Williams hasn't lost any of his stand up comedy chops. This performance goes at his standard frenzied pace and is absolutely hilarious. This is not for the easily offended as he is not politically correct.
Pretty good.......2007-03-28
This is a fantastically enjoyable disc. Robin covers a wide range of topics and is wonderfully offensive throughout. My only gripe is the manner in which Robin paces himself. This performance is frantic and relentless. This is definitely not for the fainthearted. Oh yeah, don't forget to put the kids to bed first before you pull this one out.

Except for feature-length animation, the musical has gone the way of the dinosaur. The Walt Disney company took a stab at reviving the live-action musical in 1992 with Newsies, a throwback picture with a curious subject. In 1899, the pint-sized newsboys delivering the New York papers go on strike against the unfair practices of news magnates Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst. The production is heavy on kiddie humor, although Christian Bale (the child star of Spielberg's Empire of the Sun) is charismatic as one of the older leaders of the revolt. The adult stars don't fare as well, with Robert Duvall doddering around as Pulitzer and Ann-Margret and Bill Pullman doing decorative duty. The film was not well received when first released, but hindsight reveals its charm (and allowed the young target audience to catch up with the picture on video). The first-time director is Kenny Ortega, the choreographer of Dirty Dancing, who brings plenty of energy to the action. --Robert Horton
Description
Starring Academy Award(R)-winner Robert Duvall (Best Actor -- TENDER MERCIES, 1983) and screen favorite Ann-Margret, here's the true story of a courageous group of newsboys who become unlikely heroes when they team up to fight an unscrupulous newspaper tycoon. Determined to make their dreams come true, they find the courage to challenge the powerful! Critically acclaimed from coast to coast -- if you're looking for must-see, feel-good entertainment, NEWSIES delivers!
Customer Reviews:
Great family entertainment.......2007-06-28
Newsies focusses on the strike of the newspaper boys around 1900. When mogul Pulitzer is said to have increased the price due by the paper boys in order to raise his profit, but leaving them on the brink of starvation. Not willing to be ripped off the boys under leadership of Jack Kelly (Christian Bale) and his friend David (David Moscow) go on strike. David fighting Goliath. It is both a history lesson and a lesson for today, to not always yield, but to stand up for your rights, too.
I bought this for the fact that Christian Bale was in it and was not dissapointed, for even then he proved to be a promissing actor. Altogether it is an entertaining family movie, though some of the "singers" should have had more time to train their voices, as they are sometimes off-key or lack in volume.
The extras are average standard therefore only 4 out of 5 stars.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!.......2007-05-27
I was first introduced to this movie when we had a substitute teacher in my middle school music class years ago. I have been hooked ever since and am so glad that Christian Bale has found his 'niche' as an actor. Great movie!
Great history lesson.......2007-05-12
This is an inspiring history lesson to impower every child with the message of importance and success.
Arise And Seize the Day!.......2007-04-22
This movie was something my siblings and I bonded over as children. We sang the songs, *tried* the dances, and Jack, David, Less, and Pulitzer became household names. I've always likes musicals, and there are so few things more fun and exciting than watching a group of rowdy, clever young guys who have a cause they are passionate about . . . and who know they will win because they have to. Sweet, sad, hilarious, heartwarming -- underrated!
I love this movie.......2007-03-23
Newsies is a carryover from high school for me, such a fun and energetic family movie. I recommend it for middle-school girls.

Dane Cook receives a rock star's welcome from a packed arena in this stand-up concert originally broadcast on HBO. But the jury may still be out on whether Cook is phenomenally funny or simply a phenomenon. He is certainly a master of the new media. Cook has savvily marketed himself on the Internet to his target college-age audience, and they have embraced him as a fellow "bro" and "dude," who would seemingly be awesome to party with. In his timbre and physicality, he has the shaggy, likeable quality of Will Farrell, another frat boy favorite. Cook is a man of his people. At one point, he is interrupted by a drunken Boston Red Sox fan who wants to shake his hand. Cook then leaps off the stage and chases him up the aisle to give him a send-off hug, all the while being clapped on the back and offered high and low fives by the cheering audience. Cook comes complete with arrested development lingo, such as "Here's what drove me banana sandwich," that will no doubt be repeated around the dorm.
Don't look to Cook for satirical insights on politics, the war, or even pop culture. His world view is much narrower. In Vicious Circle he expounds on the pleasures and traps of lying, male crying, being sneezed on, his father's robe, bad relationships, and sundry sexual matters that cannot be printed here. Cook takes awhile to get where he's going, but his digressions are often funnier than the pay offs. He puts the brakes on one story during which he mimes driving a car to remark that if he were actually driving this way, he would be all over the road. During other bits, he parses the different spray modes on Windex, and takes the phrase "being cheated on" literally. And it takes some kind of associative genius to compare a certain female body part to a high school stage theatre curtain. The less than well received Employee of the Month aside, Cook is currently king of the comedy hill. Vicious Circle offers a time capsule look at these heady good times for the great Dane. As for where he goes from here, the good news is that Steve Martin once filled arenas like this. The bad news: So did Andrew Dice Clay. --Donald Liebenson

Customer Reviews:
DANEgerously Funny.......2007-06-24
This wasn't the greatest routine I've ever bared witness too but it was still pretty decent. Dane Cook's style of comedy is a little off the wall, he'll be explaining one story and then dive head first into three more before returning to the one he started previously, so sometimes it's a little hard to follow but if you are able to keep up you wont be able to stop yourself from laughing.
In this concert Cook gives us his hilarious opinions on lying, religion, crime, love, spouse vs. spouse arguments, cheating, one night stands, and much more. The funniest bit of the night, however, was the jizz about the eighty year old couple, I'm not going to spoil it for you but when you hear that line perk up and get ready to roll because that alone was worth the price of this DVD.
If you love stand up, buy this DVD. There are better shows out there, but if you're looking for a laugh this will get the job done.
DANE IS FUNNY,BUT HE HAS BEEN FUNNIER!.......2007-06-24
This guy will never be a George Carlin or Richard Pryor, but he is a funny guy in a goofball kinda way. I thought the stuff on his first CD/DVD release was funnier than this one. It is still an entertaining bit.
brain ninjas...........2007-06-17
.....of course Dane needs to rotate his material a little less frequently....but the flow of this show is brilliant.
The improv with guests coming up to the stage...was fun to watch. I would have preferred more insight back stage/before hand...more of a 'making' of.
Some great pieces though..a good ride...definetly worth the $.
Amazing.......2007-05-13
This DVD is amazing, he hits every joke right on key. Almost all of his material is new, however, if you're a Dane Cook fan, he makes reference to some of his old jokes during new ones, giving even more appreciation to the new joke. It's worth the money.
Friggin' funny!.......2007-05-07
Dane Cook is one of the best comics I've ever heard. This CD is one of best Comedy CD's that I've heard in my entire life. I was rolling with laughter!

A live-on-stage performance filmed for HBO in 1982, Camelot returns Richard Harris to the role he immortalized on film in 1967. Harris replaced the original King Arthur, Richard Burton, in this revival production as it was on its way to New York's Winter Garden Theatre, which turned out to be Harris' only role on the Broadway stage. Fifteen years later, he's an older and wiser Arthur, a little more world-weary but still with a twinkle in his eye. He's paired with Meg Bussert, whose Guinevere is not as beautiful as Vanessa Redgrave in the film, but a better singer and appropriately younger. Bussert, who was Tony-nominated for her role in Brigadoon the year before, sounds eerily like original Broadway star Julie Andrews at times. Richard Muenz (The Most Happy Fella revival) plays Lancelot, Barrie Ingham plays Pellinore, and Richard Backus is Mordred. Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's score is still a great classic, and here two songs cut from the movie are restored, "Before I Gaze at You Again" and "The Seven Deadly Virtues," but inexplicably cut is "Then You May Take Me to the Fair." Not surprisingly the production has a more stagebound feel compared to the sumptuous feature film, but it's good to have a more faithful version of the show available on DVD. --David Horiuchi
Description
Experience Camelot's "one brief, shining moment" as Lerner and Loewe envisioned itlive on a Broadway stage. Working at the top of his talent, Richard Harris heads an all-star cast in one of Broadway's wittiest, most literate musicals, filled with memorable tunes. Recorded at New York's historic Winter Garden Theatre in 1982, this production captures all the immediacy and intimacy of a live performance viewed from the best seat in the house.
Idealistic King Arthur longs to create a perfectly principled kingdom, but sees his dream undone by a tragic love triangle involving Queen Guenevere (Meg Bussert) and his best friend Lancelot (Richard Muenz). In this thoroughly engaging Tony®-nominated production, the medieval monarch's visiona place where "violence is not strength, and compassion is not weakness"speaks to our time and for all time.
Recommended for family viewing by the National Education Association
DVD SPECIAL FEATURES INCLUDE original Broadway PLAYBILL® (DVD-ROM) and bios of Lerner & Loewe and Richard Harris.
Customer Reviews:
The best ever Camelot.......2007-06-27
I have been waiting for YEARS for this version to become available. As far as I am concerned, it is the ONLY version of Camelot! The absolute best!
The BEST Camelot.......2007-06-14
I've seen Camelot performed a dozen times, including the movie version with Julie Andrews and Robert Goulet. In all of those cases, I was only lukewarm about the ranking of this musical compared to its peers. The Richard Harris performance makes it clear that it takes an actor of Shakespearean skill to make this piece "work," given that there is a great deal more dialog spoken than sung. This is the Camelot "not to be forgot."
absolutely wonderful!.......2007-06-05
I've been waiting 25 years for this production of Camelot to be available for home purchase. Finally, I can relive Richard Harris's wonderful expressions and emotions with my eyes open. I had found the audio recording of the 1982 London production and for years would listen with headsets and imagine them on stage. I had seen the production at Wolf Trap, under the stars, Richard Harris's blue eyes flashing as he sang the wonders of Camelot. I've watched the DVD twice since I got it and it is as wonderful as I remembered it to be.
At last!.......2007-06-04
This was the very first VHS I ever owned. When HBO broadcast it back in '82, I was a senior in high school and only the very wealthy owned VCRs. A friend of my mother's had one, and recorded it for me. I've kept that old tape and cherished it ever since - but have hoped someday someone would release it on DVD. Now here it is.
This is probably the best production of Camelot I've ever seen, from then to now, with a crack cast, superior production, tremendous arrangements (do yourself a favor, and choose this version over the far inferior movie!). Harris was always a fine, fine Arthur, and here on stage he shines. Richard Muenz's Lancelot is probably the best ever, and Meg Bussert's Guenevere is lighthearted and airy with a stunning voice.
I'm so glad this is finally on DVD. Now I can finally see the colors again the way they where back then.
Can I give it 6 stars?.......2007-05-25
Finally!!!!!
I originally saw this production on HBO in '82(?) when it premiere, and then taped this off of A&E back in 85-86, when it was aired there.
After such a long wait, I can finally see a good copy of this, the best version of Camelot which I know. (Don't waste money on the movie; Harris is the only bright, shining spot in it).

Yellowbeard, a comedy cast with the all-star comedians of the 1980s, is a unique, corny spoof on pirate films. Like a Mel Brooks movie, Yellowbeard's plot is a series of ridiculous events, á la Airplane, circulating around Yellowbeard's (Graham Chapman) discovery that he has an "intellectual" son. Brain versus brawn is the film's theme, as Yellowbeard is forced to take his kid on a booty-hunt, since the pirate's ex-wife, Betty (Madeline Kahn), tattooed the treasure map on their child's head. As the bumbling British, including Harvey "Blind" Pew (John Cleese) and Gilbert Murvin (Marty Feldman), sail The Royal Navy Frigate to trail Yellowbeard's ship, The Lady Edith, The Spanish Main, captained by El Nebuloso (Tommy Chong) and El Segundo (Cheech Marin) follows in close pursuit. Three ships in constant battle on the open seas make for multiple comedic situations reminiscent of Monty Python. Directed by Mel Damski (Charmed, Lois & Clark), Yellowbeard has a made-for-TV cheesiness, though the talent of the actors, not to mention its off-kilter British humor, rescues the film from utter stupidity. --Trinie Dalton
Description

Caught and convicted -- for tax evasion! -- he's sentenced to 20 years in St. Victim's Prison for the Extremely Naughty. In a scheme to confiscate his fabulous treasure, the Royal Navy allows him to escape and follows him to the Spanish Main, where saucy tarts, lisping demigods and some awful puns and punishments await. Starring a who's who of comic cutups and cutthroats including Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, John Cleese, Cheech and Chong, Marty Feldman, Peter Cook, Madeline Kahn and more!!!

Classic Comedy.......2007-06-27
Many great comedic talents in this movie spoof of pirates. Like Mel Brooks meets Monte Python. Very fun movie to watch. Movie is rated PG but there is some "pirate language" and some brief nudity. After you see this you will say that Yellowbeard is more of a pirate than Jack Sparrow!
Beware of 80's movie ratings!.......2007-06-18
Unfortunately, this is not a PG rating according to today's standards. I was very disappointed that during the second half of the movie they decided to throw in an island full of topless women. I chose not to finish the movie. Also, there are a number of references to rape, and even a couple of scenes where the act of rape is being implied. For some reason, it seems that many movies from the 80's had to throw in inappropriate 2 second blips of random nudity, and they were still able to slap a PG rating on the production.
If it weren't for my disappointment, due to the crudeness of the show, I think it would actually have been a fun movie. The acting was better than I had planned on (there are a bunch of classic actors in this), and there were some really funny scenes. Unfortunately, filth ruins a movie for me every time. If it weren't for the garbage in this movie I would have given it at least 3 stars.
It's about time this came out on DVD........2007-06-15
Classic comedy. One of my favorite movies.
Fantastic combo of Python & Pirates.......2007-06-13
if you like Python & Pirates, you'll love this!
Classic movie, another closet hit by the Monty Pythoneers.......2007-05-30
My wife and I have been looking for this movie on DVD for years, and we are tickled that we finally found it. It is an ensemble cast of comedy characters from the 1970's; the Monty Python crew (shy of Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin), Cheech and Chong, and most of the cast of Young Frankenstein; Marty Feldman, Peter Boyle, Kenneth Mars, and Madeline Kahn ... and then there's Peter Cook, James Mason, and more.
A very under rated film -- although it is very silly and slapstick.

Description
Screen favorite Kurt Russell (VANILLA SKY, STARGATE) teams up with funnyman Martin Short (FATHER OF THE BRIDE I&II, JUNGLE2JUNGLE) in an outrageously wild comedy that's sure to drive you overboard! Russell plays hilariously laid-back Captain Ron -- a vagabond seaman who charts a course for comedy when he skippers the newly inherited Caribbean yacht of corporate executive Martin Harvey (Short) and his family! With his dubious nautical skills, Captain Ron takes the helm and creates wave after wave of hilarity as he leads the Harveys on a wildly amusing oceanic voyage in their dilapidated sailing vessel, all the while driving well-meaning Martin Harvey off the deep end!

"I've always been a fast healer...'course, I believe in Jesus.".......2007-05-10
CAPTAIN RON is my favorite stupid movie. The story of Captain Ron Rico, a one-eyed scoundrel and charter boat skipper (in that order) and the white bread and mayonnaise Harvey family from Chicagoland, this movie is just so absurdly over the top that it's irresistible.
The Harveys have inherited a sea hag that once belonged to Gable and Lombard. The old wooden ketch is gorgeously appointed but dry-rotted and barely seaworthy. Dad Martin Harvey (Martin Short) decides that there's one last sail left in her---to the breaker's yard. He convinces his wife Katherine (Mary Kay Place) and his children Caroline (Meadow Sisto) and Ben (Benjamin Cunningham) to have a nicely planned out "spontaneous adventure" taking the old wreck from the mythical Isle of St. Pomme de Terre ("It means St. Potato, honey." "No it doesn't.") to Miami.
Since the Harveys can't sail, they hire the disreputable Captain Ron to skipper the boat. Kurt Russell has so much fun playing Captain Ron that he literally eats the storyboards, giving us a portrayal that's half Jimmy Buffett and half Baby Huey spiked with Malibu Rum. His one-liners are all priceless ("Yeah, incentives are important, I learned that in rehab.") and they are constant.
Captain Ron is a consummate sailor, but in the tradition of the true Old Salts of yore, he's totally ragtag, disdaining charts, fuel capacity, weather conditions, international politics, sobriety, and the Harveys own plans as he wanders, Odysseus-like from island to island, drinking, seducing women, enraging husbands, outrunning insurgents, and avoiding arrest on any number of charges, all with the bewildered Harveys in tow.
But as adventure piles on adventure (including a brief internment in Cuba, and a pitched battle with a pirate ship named "Albondiga" i.e., "The Meatball"), Captain Ron shows a daring and competence under pressure that his happy-go-lucky ways belie, thus winning the hearts of the Harveys.
The lemon in this lemonade is the usually sidesplitting Martin Short, who comes across as mostly inept. As the rest of the family starts to take a shine to their bizarre shipmate and he to them, Short never quite manages to have the obligatory male bonding moment with Captain Ron. In Short's defense, he's also stuck with some of the dumbest dialogue ever written for the screen ("You said GOrilla, not GUERRilla...Go, guh, go, guh." and "I can't stand Captain Ron, he's eating my brain!" (?)).
This is Kurt Russell's film and he got 95% of the good lines. Short got stuck with ALL the downers. That's a shame, and it's the only flaw in this otherwise uproarious film. Everybody on the set looks like they're about to lose it utterly, and that's part of the fun of watching. A good time is definitely had by all.
CAPTAIN RON is a cult comedy classic. If you've ever owned a boat or sailed, you will instantly recognize Captain Ron as the squint-eyed grinning undine who lives aboard every boat and in the heart of every true sailor. This is my favorite stupid movie for a reason, and it'll be yours, too. Once you meet CAPTAIN RON you'll never see the sea the same way.
Great movie - especially if you have ever owned a boat!.......2007-03-21
This movie was before its time! It is full of hilarious one-liners, tongue-in-cheek humor, and, at times, outrageous situations that kept us and our kids howling with laugher (thought it helps that we have had a boat in the family at one time - kind of "one of 'them' boats," if you know what I mean).
The humor is very similar to The Three Amigos (another of our family favorites); indeed, if you liked the Three Amigos, I think you will very much like Captain Ron, and, if not, you might not like Captain Ron either.
Overall, this is a good family film, with lots of clean humor, one that especially will appeal to families who have had (mis)adventures in the outdoors!
Typical comedy - You'll laugh but wonder why you spent the time.......2007-01-05
This is a good movie to say it briefly. It's a good comedy, it has some family - gee whiz factors to it, as well as a few scenes that are extremely predictable, but overall it's just a fun movie. My wife didn't want to watch it, but after forcing her to watch it, she enjoyed it as well.
Great movie to showcase the TRUE Pirates of the Carribean. :)
This movie is similar to the Great Outdoors meets Overboard
Very Funny!.......2006-08-15
This is one of our favorite movies, and being sailors, we - and almost every other sailor we know - always have this movie on our boat! (This order was actually to "upgrade" from VHS to DVD.)
My family loves this movie!!!.......2006-08-07
Like another reviewer stated here we also take this DVD to the beach with us every summer. My college age kids and I can recite the dialog right along with the actors. The cast (especially Kurt Russell) all look like they had a blast making this movie. I even remember reading in one of Jimmy Buffett's books where he quotes Captain Ron, saying something along the lines of "As Captain Ron would say '...if anything's gonna happen, it's gonna happen out there". I can't say enough about this movie, and anyone who doesn't at least chuckle a little at Captain Ron's antics probably can't find humor in anything. In fact, I noticed 4 negative reviews of the movie out of 111 (112 counting this review)which tells me that those 4 who gave it negative reviews probably aren't a whole lotta fun anyway so I don't really care what they think. Now, if they'd only come out with a sequel...
