Editorial Review:
Amazon.com
At once sprawling and intimate, Otto Preminger's coolly observed story of the education of a Catholic cardinal (Tom Tryon) spans 25 years of 20th-century social history, hops from Rome to Boston to Vienna, and confronts abortion, celibacy, and racism along the way. If those issues seem tame today, Preminger turns them into vivid drama in his hero's crisis and triumph of faith. Tryon is rather stolid and stiff, but the supporting cast helps liven scenes: Romy Schneider as a tempting Fräulein, Ossie Davis as an American priest who requests the Vatican take a stand against racism, John Huston's Oscar®-nominated performance as an irascible archbishop. It's a religious epic unlike any other of its time: thoughtful and serious, with a magnificent yet austere sense of composition and a graceful elegance. --Sean Axmaker

Based on a couple of short stories (from The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven) by Sherman Alexie, Smoke Signals is a lean and assured feature that speaks well of its lengthy, rich evolution, including a development stint at Sundance. The first feature made by a Native American crew and creative team, the film concerns two young Idaho men with radically different memories of one Arnold Joseph (Gary Farmer), a former resident of the reservation who split years before and has just died in Phoenix. Arnold's strapping, popular son, Victor (Adam Beach), remembers him best as an alcoholic, occasionally abusive father who drove off one day and never came back. By contrast, Thomas Builds-the-Fire (Evan Adams), whom Arnold had saved from certain death years earlier, has chosen to exaggerate the man's life and deeds in a mythmaking fashion that drives Victor crazy. Circumstances bring the two together, however, in a bus ride to retrieve Arnold's ashes. There, in Phoenix, a confrontation with the reality of the dead man's fullest legacy has a profound effect on both characters. Alexie, who wrote the script and was personally involved in all aspects of the production, and first-time director Chris Eyre are so polished in their approach that you can barely feel the cinematic engine at work here. This is the kind of movie in which the characters seem to be driving everything forward, a captivating and pleasant experience that gets a little too tidy at the end (can we call a moratorium on scenes of human ashes lovingly disposed to the winds?), but which is undeniably moving. The cast, including Irene Bedard (the voice of and physical inspiration for Disney's Pocahontas) is outstanding. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the Best Native American Movie.......2007-06-27

I have been acquiring all of the movies I can find by and about Native Americans and their culture. This one is among the best if not THE best.

4 out of 5 stars Very funny, in a Napoleanic way.......2007-05-22

This is one of those quirky sleepers I just love to see. No big name stars, just pure entertainment...a gem. I believe that this movie accurately depicts life on the reservation. It's a mixed bag, just like everywhere else in life, but the people are good , and struggling together with all of their strengths and flaws.

I've had frybread as a guest of the Navaho in Gallup, and this movie made me yearn for more. Don't miss it!

4 out of 5 stars Very charming.......2007-04-19

This is a charming movie, very funny, but with statements on family and unsuspecting friendship that cut across all cultures. The only real problem is the WIG. Buy it and watch, you'll see what I mean. The WIG is, in itself so hilarious that it's worth buying the movie. Poor Adam Beach, to be subjected to that!

5 out of 5 stars Put this in your pipe and smoke it.......2007-04-10

If only movies like "Smoke Signals" were box-office hits, the world would be a better place. Sundance Films recognized this movie's brilliance, so that is something. This movie of friendship and family is both incredibly moving and incredibly funny. I had no idea who the actors (Adam Beach, Evan Adams) were when I rented this movie. I think I was intrigued by the fact that it was a Native American film, and I have an interest in Native American art, literature, music and film. You will be even more touched if you happened to have grown up with an alcoholic father. I rented the movie twice, heard one of the songs from the film, "John Wayne's Teeth" on the radio this past Thanksgiving, and ordered the DVD online the next day. It is one of my favorite movies ever!

3 out of 5 stars Good, but flawed.......2007-03-22

I see all these five-star reviews and wonder if I was the only one who found this move overwrought and a little bit corny? Overall I really enjoyed it, but it was sort of obtuse. I heartily enjoyed "Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven" and when I viewed Smoke Signals I thought "Whoa! They must have pried this from Sherman Alexie's hands and ran with it! I'm surprised he didn't insist on having his name taken off it!" I was surprised to find out that he co-produced it and wrote the screenplay!

The acting could have been better, although I thought Thomas Builds-the-fire was very cute with his braids and big smile. It bothered me that the characters in this movie were constantly expounding on the fact that they were Indian. They brought it up every couple of minutes! Somehow, I doubt that that is what real Indians do. We know you're Indian, you don't have to state it. "What are you going to trade us? Because we're Indian, remember? We barter!" I would think that most Indians don't see a lot of novelty in the fact that they are Indian and these characters certainly did. This made it seem like the film was presenting "Indians" in third person rather than letting them be themselves. It would have been improved if it had been a little more natural and less self-conscious.

Over all, though, it's worth seeing despite its corniness for its powerful message and, of course, the cuteness of smiley Evan Adams.

Kevin Costner's 1990 epic won a bundle of Oscars for a moving, engrossing story of a white soldier (Costner) who singlehandedly mans a post in the 1870 Dakotas, and becomes a part of the Lakota Sioux community who live nearby. The film may not be a masterpiece, but it is far more than the sum of good intentions. The characters are strong, the development of relationships is both ambitious and careful, the love story between Costner and Mary McDonnell's character is captivating. Only the third-act portrait of white intruders as morons feels overbearing, but even that leads to a terribly moving conclusion. Costner's direction is assured, the balance of action and intimacy is perfect--what more could anyone want outside of an unqualified masterpiece? --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars gives you that cozy feeling!.......2007-05-14

Delightful yarn about an American soldier who betrays his country by providing firearms and military assistance to the enemy, then assists in the massacre of several of his fellow soldiers when they attempt to bring him to justice.

Great for the whole family!

5 out of 5 stars Monumental Achievement!.......2007-05-14

I truly loved this film--the acting, driecting, writing, editing, and music were all superb. The scenery, the fighting, the romance, the humor, the buffalo hunt, the developing friendship--they were magnificent. Everything about this film was believable, inspiring, and involving. I saw this movie in 1990 and liked it, but this time, in 2007, I loved it, certainly enough to want to see it many more times . Buy it and keep it.

5 out of 5 stars An American Masterpiece.......2007-05-13

Occasionally the stars align, all the pieces are together and working and the end result is a work of group brilliance. DWW meets that standard. Direction, music, acting, story, art direction, everything works. The result is a masterpiece to be viewed over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, but what about disc 2?.......2007-05-11

Dear viewers and reviewers,

has anybody noticed, that in the 2 disc Collector's Edition, disc two bears the same material as on the second side of disc one?

When reviewing a product should be specified as is and not by its merits alone.

Unfortunately on the copy I did receive, following special features were totally missing:

1. No Dances photo montage with introduction by Ben Glass;

2. No Poster Gallery;

3. No TV Spots;

4. No Theatrical Trailer;

5. No ...and More! as advertised so pompously on the outer jacket...

All you get, and this already on the double-sided disc One, is the original Making of... and two separate commentaries, as well as John Barry's Music Video.

That's it!

Is it a packaging error? Go figure.

But you certainly don't find the above mentioned, and advertised items.

The movie is is presented on the two sided disc in its lengthened version and in full 2.35:1 screen ratio. The sound, as correctly stated is in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Stereo and is excellent.

I don't mind so much the missing specials, since the movie alone is a tiny masterpiece in its own right, but I do object to some practices, as to print things on sleeves, that do not correspond to the actual contents of the DVD box.

The second disc is just a repeat of part two of disc one...

Sorry people, but I thought you ought to know this, before buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Good Quilty Movies..........2007-05-07

I am happy to say that the movie I got was full version no uncut scenes or deleted parts If you like romance, adventure, drama this is the movie to purchase it is a great movie I would buy from amazon again anytime its fast, great prices and enjoyable easy way to get what you want..

A box-office hit when released in 1994, this sprawling, frequently overwrought familial melodrama may get sillier as its plot progresses, but it's the kind of lusty, character-based epic that Hollywood should attempt more often. It's also an unabashedly flattering star vehicle for Brad Pitt as Tristan--the rebellious middle son of a fiercely independent Montana rancher and military veteran (Anthony Hopkins)--who is routinely at odds with his more responsible older brother, Alfred (Aidan Quinn), and younger brother, Samuel (Henry Thomas). From the battlefields of World War I to his adventures as an oceangoing sailor, Tristan's life is full of personal torment, especially when he returns to Montana and finds himself competing with Alfred over Samuel's beautiful widow (Julia Ormond), whose passion for Tristan disrupts the already turbulent Ludlow clan. Under the wide-open canopy of Big Sky country, this operatic tale unfolds with all the bloodlust, tragedy, and scenery-chewing performances you'd expect to find in a hokey bestselling novel (in fact, it's based on the acclaimed novella by Jim Harrison), but it's a potent mix that's highly entertaining. Not surprisingly, John Toll won an Academy Award for his breathtaking outdoor cinematography. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Three brothers and one woman under the Big Sky country........2007-06-17

This movie is an epic tale told of three brothers and one woman in Montana in the first part of the twentieth century. The youngest brother comes home from college with a beautiful woman on his side. She falls for the middle brother Brad Pitt, who is not altogether interested. The oldest brother falls hopelessly in love with her. This movies plot does get convoluted and confusing at times. The tortured soul that is the middle brother is a model for narcissistic ego maniac. It does have beautiful cinematography, and the story and the characters are interesting enough to keep your attention. The problem I have with the movie is that it does just get too bogged down with its own story. Overall it is fun to watch and I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Love, betrayal, and drama..........2007-05-16

The beauty of the countryside in this movie is magnificent. The Rocky Mountains of Montana in the early 1900s must have offered challenging experiences as people wrestled with the elements.

The movie is the story of a man, played by Anthony Hopkins, who has three sons and is abandoned by his wife. So he sets out to raise these three boys and at some point writes to his wife to say... I know how to guide men through war, but this is much harder...

Anthony Hopkins plays the role of Colonel Ludlow, discharged from the war because he wanted to regain some sanity. Therefore, he hates government, he despises the drive to conquer and fight over land, and is highly protective of Indians.

This family of men lives out in the wilderness, therefore, nature is the chisel that forms the character of the three boys. They are very close and the oldest two, played by Brad Pitt and Aidan Quinn, are extremely caring and protective of their younger brother, played by Henry Thomas.

The younger son goes away to college and there he meets Susanna, played by Julia Ormond [played Princess Guinevere in the movie First Knight]. He falls in love with her and upon returning home, brings her along to meet the family.

As she enters the life of these lonely men, she captures the heart of each and everyone. The father is delighted that a refined lady has joined them because thanks to her they read, sing, and enjoy the feminine side of life. But... the three brothers soon encounter the difficulties of jealousy, envy, betrayal and competition for the same woman.

Brad Pitt, as usual, plays the role of the man who breaks other people's relationships, breaks hearts all around, but his performance is superb as Tristan... the favorite son.

Don't miss it! A 1994 Academy winner for best cinematography, this movie offers the passionate journey into the darkest secrets of love, betrayal, and families.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best movies ever made........2007-03-27

Personally I think this movie is one the best that has ever been made. The acting is all superb and the storyline is so unique that I have never seen another movie like it. It is the story of a legend as the young boys grow into men and strive to find their own way in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Good, old-fashioned family saga.......2007-02-24

If you liked Brad Pitt before he began appearing on the cover of People magazine every week, this is the film for you. Set in the early 20th c., before and after WWI, it's the story of Captain Ludlow, a veteran of the Indian Wars, marvelously played by Anthony Hopkins, and his three sons. Brad Pitt is Tristan, the middle son, a loner and lover of the wild, incredibly sexy and the favorite. Beautiful Julia Ormond shows up on the arm of the youngest brother, Samuel, as his fiancée, and the seclusion that the Captain has enjoyed from the turmoil of the wars is shattered. All three brothers are smitten, but reality intrudes when the idealistic Samuel decides to go to Canada to enlist, and his devoted brothers go with him to protect him. Samuel's foolish decision sets off a train of events that leaves many victims behind, except Tristan, who in the end is "the rock against which all others break."

Brad Pitt is marvelous in this film--although a bit overwrought at times, he can convey love, sincerity, integrity and humor, as well as brutality and insanity. Aidan Quinn, who seems to do mostly TV these days, is the pained older brother, who does everything right but is never loved. This sweeping epic won the Oscar for cinematography, and the prize was well-deserved. Be prepared for a few tough WWI scenes, and some gratuitous gore along the way, but the story grabs you and doesn't let go--you'll enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Rage against Leviathon.......2007-02-17

Three sons grow up under the authority and love of a libertarian father. They fall in love with the same woman and sibling rivalry takes on a devastating turn. Each brother attempts to find his place in the world whether it be with the accepted norms of society, the revolutionaries, or the extreme individualist anarcho-libertarian life. Each pays a heavy price for his choice. A moving tale of relationships, government, and belonging. The Montana scenery is as much a star as any of the main characters. A wonderful piece of work that will leave you pondering the intricate plot themes.

While it doesn't hold together as a three-hour TV drama, Dreamkeeper should prove enthralling to anyone interested in Native American myths and legends. A variety of tribal folklore provides the episodic thrust of this typical Hallmark production, which relies too heavily on digital effects--and the plodding direction of Hallmark regular Steve Barron--in telling the story of a resentful Lakota teenager (Eddie Spears) who reluctantly agrees to drive his wise old grandfather (August Schellenberg) from their South Dakota "rez" to an All-Nations Powwow in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Along the way, the tradition-bound elder serves as tribal "dreamkeeper" for his initially resistant grandson, who gradually realizes that his grandfather's stories--visualized through effects-laden reenactments involving all manner of magic and mystery--are essential in preserving the fading cultures of the Lakota and the several other tribes whose folklore depends on unbroken generations of oral tradition. While some of the lavishly dramatized tales can stand alone as authentic Native American myth-making, Dreamkeeper lacks the overall structure that could've given the stories a cumulative magical impact. Still, it's an admirable attempt to introduce neglected cultures into the television mainstream. --Jeff Shannon

Product Description

A century old storyteller and his grandson, a troubled 17 year old boy embarks on a cross country journey toward self-discovery. Like Old Pete's wise tales themselves, Dreamkeeper is important and illuminating storytelling for the entire family.

    5 out of 5 stars Dream Keeper.......2007-06-01

We love this movie. We had it on VHS, we had taped it off of the TV. The tape has been watched so many times, it was beginning to wear out. I decided to look for it online. You don't know how happy we were when I found it. Thank you so much!

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-05-30

The Amazon.com reviewer didn't give this movie the credit that it deserves!

This is one of my favorite films about Native Americans. It features well known Native American actors such as August Schellenberg, Floyd Red Crow Westerman and Tantoo Cardinal, among others. I've watched the DVD too many times to count. If you're interested in Native American culture, then you'll find that this production is a real treat.

    5 out of 5 stars So moving!.......2007-05-30

This is a remarkable film/study of the great lore and legends of the Native American Nations.
The special effects were magical! As a white person, I feel privileged to have been allowed to peek through the veil which has protected the privacy of the Lakota People' s legends. It was as if I had been personally invited to learn about the "Mysteries".

It was moving to watch the relationship between Grand'Pa and Shane take on a new dimension, which ultimately put Shane back on the "Red Road". The Native American family has something very special: a long, long history to draw upon.

Loved the film as well the added bonus of having the Sound Track CD, which I play over and over.
    A "must see" and a "keeper"....Well done!

    5 out of 5 stars legends.......2007-05-13

A great movie. Plenty of action and humor. An honest story with plenty of moral values of the people. A good insight into the Indian explanation of life. Very authentic.

4 out of 5 stars Yes, lets have more dreamkeepers.......2007-04-30

When the movie starts, one may think that got a wrong movie. But, if one be aptient enough, emotions will get its place. I smiled and cried many times.

    1. No Dances photo montage with introduction by Ben Glass;

    2. No Poster Gallery;

    3. No TV Spots;

    4. No Theatrical Trailer;

Another reliably well-crafted, generally engrossing documentary from Ken Burns, Lewis & Clark employs the director's now-familiar approach to his subjects, from its elegant juxtaposition of period illustrations and portraits against newly filmed footage of historic sites to Burns's repertory of accomplished actors to provide gravitas for quotes from the key figures. Granted the formula has become familiar enough to allow parody, but Burns knows how to invest his historical investigations with movement and drama, making this four-hour journey a worthwhile trip.

As narrated by Hal Holbrook, Dayton Duncan's script explicates the agenda presented by Thomas Jefferson to Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, placing it in the context of the young country's gamble in Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase, and the expedition's goals for opening the West. While preserving the heroic scale of the undertaking, Burns also finds time to delve into the politics of the venture and the disparate personalities of the two explorers; in particular, Duncan and Burns look at the career of Lewis, the presidential protégé, his moody demeanor, and his untimely death. The film also looks beyond its titular leaders to examine the personalities of their corps of soldiers, their boatmen, and the Indians they met and depended on, most notably their female Shosone guide, Sacagawea. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Scenery of the American West.......2007-04-26

Breathtaking cinematography of the American West, really helps you see the journey as the Corps of Discovery would have. Provides insight into the troubled character of Lewis. Made me curious to learn more about Native Americans. Was saddening to see how good relations initially were between the explorers and the Indians, the good faith, compared to the strife and mistrust that prevailed later.

Enjoyed following along with a map as the film progressed. Jefferson estimated it would take Americans 100 generations to settle the West--they did it in five.

a beautiful crafted account of one of america's most important pieces of history.terrific narration with a soundtrack to die for.documentary making at its absolute best!

5 out of 5 stars Travel with the Corps of Discovery.......2006-09-25

I absolutely love this movie. Something about the Lewis & Clark expedition appeals to the adventurer in each of us. The United States as a country is less than 30 years old on May 14, 1804, as Lewis & Clark leave with Jefferson's "the Corps of Discovery" on their famous expedition to explore the west. The photography of this DVD is stunningly beautiful, the music hauntingly reminiscent of the early 1800's. The story is told through reading excerpts from the Corps' diaries and journals, beautiful photography, and interviews with Dayton Duncan (writer), John Logan Allen (geographer), Stephen E. Ambrose (historian), William Least Heat-Moon (writer), James P. Ronda (historian), Mylie Lawyer (Twisted Hair Descendant), and others. This movie leaves the sense of having travelled with the Lewis & Clark expedition and having seen the beautiful country with their eyes, as you hear their words and see the land they saw.

As stated of the Corps of Discovery in the movie's Introduction, "They were beginning the most important expedition in American History, the United States' first official exploration into unknown spaces, and a glimpse into the future of their young nation. They would become the first United States citizens to experience the Great Plains, the immensity of its skies, the rich splendor of its wildlife, the harsh rigor of its winters. They would be the first United States citizens to see the daunting peaks of the Rocky Mountains, the first to struggle over them, the first to cross the Continental Divide -- to where the rivers flow west. And after encountering cold, hunger, danger, and wonders beyond belief, they would become the first of their nation to reach the Pacific Ocean by land. It would be the greatest adventure of their lives. . . It's a great story. It's a human story. It's a story of those who went first. THEY were first. They led the way. They opened the trail." "It's America's story . . . They turned the nation and faced it west. And that's where the future has always been, that's where hope and possibility have been. And I think that is what draws us to Lewis and Clark, it's about possibilities, it is about what could be. . . it's about potential, the future, and hope."

I first borrowed this DVD from our local library, but then had to buy it for my own. Sometimes I watch it just for the beauty of the scenery and the hopeful young optimism of a new country, looking west all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Documentary: A Bit of History, A Bit of Storytelling.......2006-02-13

When I was growing up in Oregon, the Lewis & Clark Expedition was raised up as one of the most important events in American History and we got to learn about it every year. Of course, the entire focus of the journey was on reaching the Oregon Country and the winter they spent at Fort Clatsop. I was always captivated by the journey and loved visiting some of the sites along the trail.

When I came across this Ken Burns documentary, I was excited by the prospect of its four hour run time. I've seen many films about the expedition that try to squeeze the trip into a 45 minute adventure. And let me tell you: this film delivers. It lived up to all of my expectations.

Given its running time, LEWIS & CLARK: THE JOURNEY OF THE CORPS OF DISCOVERY has time to dwell on the entire journey. I was amazed by how much I learned about the expedition BEFORE they reached the Columbia (something largely left out of my childhood lectures). The film, in many parts, is beautifully shot and Burns manages to capture many parts of the country without capturing modern civilization.

Of course, I agree with those reviewers who argue that the film does gloss over some of the impact the expedition had on the course of American history. While the narrators mention the destruction that would befall the Native American tribes and the fact that Lewis & Clark were brining a message of American empire, this documentary could have used a little more historical realism. But the film wouldn't have been as cheery or sentimental that way.

Stephen Ambrose, despite the claims of accuracy that many have touted on this site, gets a little too involved for my tastes. Of course, he is a fabulous storyteller. He'd be a great grandfather to have around. But one has to wonder while listening to him exactly where he is embellishing and "filling in" the history and how much he is reporting.

On the whole, I thoroughly enjoyed LEWIS & CLARK: THE JOURNEY OF THE CORPS OF DISCOVERY. It is a great historical work and a piece of art as well. I have watched it twice already and have not been bored. If you're interested in Lewis & Clark, this is a great way to bring history into the television room. I highly recommend it.

The Rock is definitely Walking Tall in this straightforward remake of the popular 1973 revenge flick based on the real-life exploits of Sheriff Buford Pusser. Only the basic premise of the original film remains, but it's well-suited to the Rock's rising-star agenda, and it's a savvy, albeit uninspired follow-up to his previous hit, The Rundown. With typical beefcake bravado, Chris Vaughan (the Rock) arrives home in rural Kitsap County, Washington (filmed in budget-friendly Canada, of course) to find his hometown overtaken by childhood friend-turned-sleazebag casino owner and drug-dealer Jay Hamilton (played with steely-eyed malevolence by Neal McDonough), whose squad of goons includes the local sheriff. The cards are instantly and simplistically stacked against our hero, but no matter: he's soon kickin' ass and takin' names as the new sheriff, and from that point director Kevin Bray (All About the Benjamins) goes strictly by-the-numbers, limiting this punchy programmer to a brisk 85 minutes, with comic relief (courtesy of costar Johnny Knoxville) and an obligatory love-interest (Ashley Scott, in obligatory skimpy attire) tossed in for good measure. It's a cracker movie for a cracker audience, and on those terms it handily expedites the Rock's ascension to the action-movie throne. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars REALLY BAD REMAKE !.......2007-03-26

What ever good qualities were in the original did not make it into this remake! Really bad!

    5 out of 5 stars Tough.......2007-03-11

Loved it! Loved it! Dwayne Johnson is gorgeous and the role he played in this movie fit him like a pair of comfortable slippers because he just slipped right into it. Oooh! the way he used that piece of wood was so exciting and the strength he showed in recovering from the beating. I know I jumped a couple of feet in the air when the jury found him not guilty. Johnny Knoxville's role was so natural and Neal McDonough was also great. Great movie that I will be watching over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars ...And Carry a Big Stick.......2007-01-23

Walking Tall is a remake of the 1973 film, which is in turn a "semi-biopic" of Sheriff Buford Pusser. Ironically enough, Pusser was a former professional wrestler-turned lawman in McNairy County, Tennessee. For those of you keeping track, the Buford Pusser was renamed to Chris Vaughn (in the world of macho movies, this is understandable) and his background was changed from wrestling to Special Forces. Which is funny, because Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who plays the role of Vaughn, is a former professional wrestler turned actor.

In this action movie, Vaughn returns to his hometown of Kitsap County, Washington (instead of Pusser's actual McNairy County, Tennessee) from a stint in the Special Forces. We're not sure what Vaughn did, but it must have been ugly, because he never speaks about it and answers questions about people he killed with a sad stare. Unfortunately, Kitsap County has gone downhill since the local lumber mill closed. His father, Vaughn Sr. (John Beasley) is out of work. Vaughn's sister Michelle (Kristen Wilson) has become a cop, but her son Pete (Khleo Thomas) hangs out with the wrong crowd. Heck, even Vaughn's old girlfriend Deni (Ashley Scott) has become a stripper. All these sins can be blamed on Vaughn's old high school rival, Jay Hamilton (played with sneering arrogance by Neal McDonough).

Vaughn's return is cause for celebration by his friends, including the recovering alcoholic Ray (Johnny Knoxville, of all people), who treat him to a night of gambling and debauchery at Hamilton's premiere casino. But the whole place is dirty, where gamblers cheat and drugs are given to kids. It's at this point that Walking Tall flirts with cartoonish levels of evil. Even Hamilton points this out: "Why would I sell drugs when I own the entire town already?" Why indeed?

Vaughn goes nuts once he discovers that the place is corrupt, and his fisticuffs earn him a form of vicious revenge from the security staff that involves a box cutter and a lot of cutaway scenes of Vaughn screaming. Left to die, he manages to recover on his parents' sofa. The sheriff (Michael Bowen) and his deputies are obviously in Hamilton's pocket and refuse to help. When Vaughn's nephew overdoses on drugs gained from Hamilton's casino, Vaughn's had enough: he takes a four-foot hickory club and smashes the place up. That's just the first half of the movie.

Returning to reality, Vaughn's outburst causes him to be brought up on several charges, brought by the very people who cut him up the first time. Vaughn wins the case by appealing to squeamishness of the jury, who wince once he shows them the scars from the box cutter. "If you acquit me of these charges, I'll run for sheriff!" he shouts. And they do. And he does. What happens next is a good old-fashioned butt-whupping from a big man with a big stick.

I didn't expect much from an action movie headlined by a wrestler, but Walking Tall distinguishes itself in several ways that make it worth watching:

IT'S MULTIETHNIC: Vaughn's father is black, his mother is white; Vaughn's girlfriend is white. The movie doesn't make a big deal about it.

IT KNOWS ITS LIMITATIONS: The Rock is huge. This obvious fact is used against Vaughn when he's on trial, as the poor, beat-up thugs make him out to be a monster. And he sort of is...he's just a monster you want on your side. Ray is both pathetic and amusing, but mostly pathetic, as only Knoxville can play him.

IT UNABASHEDLY LOVES ACTION: This movie is about good guys beating up bad guys. Although Vaughn's Special Forces training is curiously absent from most of the film, he does get into fistfights and gunfights with everybody. The fighting is fast and furious but never overtly cinematic. There are lots of thuds, grunts, and crunches.

I like The Rock. He's handsome and sleek in a way that other muscle-bound stars are not, conveying both strength and speed. He doesn't come off as a brutal thug by just looking at him, unless he's standing next to someone else. And because Johnson is famous for arching his eyebrow in ironic "am I for real or what?" pose, he's able to pull off comedy by standing next to someone considerably smaller, like Knoxville.

Walking Tall has both heart and muscle, a feel-good tale about a tough guy who stands up for his hometown in an era when nobody seems to be standing up for anything anymore.

4 out of 5 stars Good action, solid storyline of with a dash of humor........2007-01-18

Knoxville and The Rock are a good pair of longtime friends in a small rural Washington town overun by corruption. The rock is a decorated sergent home from the army, Knoxville a streetwise highschool friend that lived on the other side of the law. Together, they try to set things strait in a town that is not what the sergent left behind. This storyline is based of a series of films (a trilogy)in the 1970's and a tv series about Buford Pusser, a sherrif in Tennessee, and on real life Buford Pusser. Check this film out, a reasonably done film good for a thrill or two. Rumor has it, there is a sequal coming out, Walking Tall-The Payback with Kevin Sorbo. Please see this one before you see that, because it will likely ruin your impression of the storyline

4 out of 5 stars Love This Movie!.......2007-01-16

I really enjoyed the non-stop action and adventure in this movie. A good Saturday night movie to watch at home and chill out. I think The Rock is so nice-looking. Nice modern version of the earlier picture.

Forget about Kevin Costner's sun-kissed, water-colored, Oscar-winning Dances with Wolves. Black Robe, which was directed by Bruce Beresford, a director who gave the world the finest film of the early '80s Australian new wave, Breaker Morant, and who continually collides cultures and ethnicity in his films (Mister Johnson, Driving Miss Daisy), matches and surpasses the Costner epic as an expertly crafted, brutal saga of redemption and salvation. In 1634 a young French Jesuit missionary is assigned to trek 1,500 miles through the New France wilderness to a mission settled in Huron Indian country. Black Robe chronicles the journey of Father Laforgue (Lothaire Blutheau) as he leaves his Jesuit brothers and, with the aid of a young translator and guide, Daniel (Aden Young), and eight canoes of Algonquin Indians, moves into the uncompromising Canadian northern territory on a die-hard mission to convert the natives. Mixing elements of Michael Mann's The Last of the Mohicans and Roland Joffé's The Mission, Beresford offers a restless tale of Laforgue's conflicted faith juxtaposed against the sublime spiritual harmony with the land that the Huron and Algonquin already hold. Black Robe dances to its own drummer and is tuned into the precarious balance between nature's mystery and spirit and the strident, unyielding religious ethic. The cinematography by Peter James is relentlessly cruel and bleak, but it absolutely conveys the obstacles that face the idealistic and blind young priest, who by the end, has faced his own awakening. The film also features one of the late, great composer Georges Delerue's most noble scores. --Paula Nechak

    Description

From acclaimed director Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy, Tender Mercies) and adapted by screenwriter Brian Moore from his novel of the same name, Black Robe is "amazing an adventure film that is as intelligent as it is enthralling" (US)! French Jesuit missionary Father Laforgue travels to the magnificently austere Canadian wilderness to save the souls of a "savage and godless" peoplethe native tribes of the Huron and Algonquin. But the natives, who have their own spiritual value system that differs drastically from Christianity, are immediately suspicious, resentful and openly hostile toward the intrusive "Black Robe." And when Laforgue hires a reluctant group of Algonquin to escort him on a harrowing 1500-mile journey up the broad and sinuous St. Lawrence River, a devastating chain of events not only causes him to question his deeply held beliefs but also forever changes the course of history for the natives' way of life.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2007-02-06

The violation of true relationships in this film is astounding. It demonstrates the sheer violence that can be perpetrated against a people group that you feel has no value as human beings. Sometimes we get so caught up in our "mission" that we forget that we are all made in God's image and we all have value in God's sight. To ignore the incarnationality of Jesus within each one of us is to deny the great gospel message of Christianity. This film shows how a mission without regard for culture can result in devastation beyond all imagination. I highly recommend this film.

5 out of 5 stars The Forgotten Art Of Trusting A Film To Truly TELL A Story.......2007-01-26

Black Robe is a lush, incredibly deep, strikingly emotive motion picture, that tells the story of a young Jesuit priest's journey across the dense wilderness of seventeenth-century Quebec, undertaken while he simultaneously experiences a transformative test of his commitment to the stark way of life he has chosen. Which holds the greatest desire for him, a beckoning existence of ease and comfort amid relatives back in France; the possibility of earthly love; or service to God, that almost certainly includes a violent martyrdom?

Guided by his nation's Algonquin allies, the determined, idealistic young man of a privileged caste seeks to take up his assignment at a mission on the edge of "New France's" colonial frontier. As this decidedly quiet and cerebral epic unfolds, a journey of spiritual evolution takes this priest and his small band through numerous personal tests and into the face of many dangers, not merely from the unwelcoming savagery of the landscape itself, but from hostile aboriginals who welcome neither the Algonquians nor the European intruder into their homeland. What begins amid the opulence of Bourbon France becomes bluntly visceral with unsparing depictions of torture, bloodlust, rape, and death, and yet the way in which this tale is left to carry itself toward its most unforeseen climax is absolutely courageous.

There are too many noteworthy performances to list here, and any written description of the scenery within this film would fall flat. With its countless tiny moments that contrast cultures (Algonquians thinking the Frenchmen's' mechanical clock was somehow their king, since they lived by its motions) for the alternating bravery, sadism, devotions and loyalty of those characters within it, for its terrific story, and for its end to end flawless quality, I truly think Black Robe is among the greatest films shot in the 1990's, and might just be at the top of its particular genre.

    5 out of 5 stars Black Robe.......2007-01-10

Definitely rated R but very interesting and disturbing in the white man's treatment of Indians.

2 out of 5 stars Okay, not a barn burner though.......2006-11-02

Interesting movie, little short on the story line, some of the actors were not as believable as they could have been (the native americans), the romantic scenes were over emphasized, ...I love the period in history, is the only reason I remotely like the movie.

4 out of 5 stars New France, now seemingly forgotten.......2006-09-07

This movie seems to aim at being a serious historical comment and an action-adventure movie. It is hard to achieve both aims in the same movie. Life has never been cram-packed with action and adventure even for Jesuit missionaries. Nevertheless, the movie may have the value of interesting some viewers in the historical subject of New France, which had a long life of about a century and a half but can be seen as one of history's big might-have-beens nevertheless.

The music is beautiful, and so is the scenery. Captions are provided for the natives as they speak their own languages. Everything said in English, however, we are supposed to imagine spoken in French, I assume. Why the French should not speak French, I do not know. The DVD provides French and Spanish captions, but not voice-overs.

The movie is rated R, probably for sex and violence. I counted three brief sex scenes. Whether the first two are dramatically justifiable depends mostly on the audience. We take in both scenes through the eyes of the missionary, and both communicate something offensive, and this seems to be their point. In the first, standards of privacy are at stake. In the second, standards of commitment, as it turns out. (Much gets said about the sacrament of baptism in this movie; notably little, in view of the plot, about the sacrament of matrimony.) The third is Hollywoodesque and unlikely to say the least. The movie is fiction, nowhere more than in that scene. But as for the violence, the movie is loosely based on a past reality; and the violence is, if anything, toned down from the historically documented violence and cruelty of that time, place, and people. This does not mean that it is easy to view or that everybody wants to see it. For first-hand historical accounts, see the Jesuit Relations, available on Amazon.

One theme of the movie is that we are all religious creatures in the sense that awareness of our mortality calls forth a response of some kind. The Catholic faith was the response of French Catholics and the response taught by the missionaries. The natives had their own accustomed response. But are all responses equally good and truthful? The movie could seem to say so, but the Catholic answer, both then and now, is a firm no. The movie does not have to be interpretted as affirming religious neutrality or agnosticism, but such an interpretation is easily possible.

One scene shows a penitential gesture on the part of the missionary. It is possible to view this sympathetically, but I fear that it makes him look like a nut, since it hard to see how he can blame himself at that point. Penitential practices were not uncommon and could go rather far, but I know of no good reason to think that Catholic missionaries were neurotic.

In another scene, the young Frenchman Daniel tells the missionary about the Algonquin concept of afterlife. The missionary calls it "childish." Daniel asks rhetorically whether it is harder to believe than that of sitting on clouds enjoying a beatific vision. End of conversation, in the movie. Daniel gets the last word on the subject, and it seems anti-Christian. But in fact, it is merely anti-Dante; and, even at that, Dante's poem and similar works of the European Christian imagination -- the best of them -- would have been poorly summarized or understood. Obviously, the Catholic Church did not prohibit such works, but also teaches, "Heaven is the end and fulfillment of the deepest human longings, the state of supreme, definitive happiness." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, article 1024). If sitting on clouds would just bore Daniel, then it would not be heaven for him.

Another theme has to do with dreams, whether happy dreams or nightmares. See article 67 in the Catechism of the Catholic Church for a statement on private revelations, which says of them, in part, "It is not their role to improve or complete Christ's definitive Revelation." Chomina's dream does reveal a piece of the future, as it turns out, and such dreams do not occur only in fiction, but generally they are, properly, little more than curiosities. By themselves dreams usually do not reliably guide the dreamer, after waking. The obstacle of interpreting a dream is usually insurmountable, and bad interpretation makes for bad guidance. The missionary's remark about people who think that dreams are real and this world is an illusion has everything to do with the Christian faith, for it is terribly important that Jesus lived in this world for real, not in dreams or in movies -- those dreams enabled through Thomas Edison -- and that he rose from the dead for real. See 1 Corinthians 15: 12-19 for St. Paul's statement on the importance of Jesus's resurrection as real. The missionary would have realized that he was awake in the same real world as Jesus, just sixteeen hundred years later. The year was 1634.

The movie shows three Huron elders debating whether their tribe should accept Christianity from the Jesuit missionaries. They think that doing so might weaken their ability to defend themselves militarily. Then a note at the end of the movie says that the Huron were later "routed and killed by their Iroquois enemies." Without knowing more, the audience would thus be led to believe that the misgivings of the Huron elders were well founded, as though the missionaries had been too pacifistic; but this belief can be doubted. Historically, the missionaries opposed the common practice of torturing defenseless captives, but did not oppose effective defence. In fact, they would have reason to defend their own work with arms if necessary.

Some details in this movie dramatize historical conditions of some note. For example, the very brief scene of Daniel fumbling with his firearm, such as it is, is surely a comment on those extremely awkward and unreliable weapons; the bow was still far superior. The missionary's comment about brandy in the first scene is a comment on the practice of plying the natives with an addictive substance that their culture had no long experience with. The costumes and sets are, I assume, facsimiles of the real thing.

Viewers who do not already know might like to be told that one line in the movie, "For the greater glory of God," is, or used to be, the motto of the Jesuits, the Society of Jesus: "Ad majorem Dei gloriam."

Another line, a sweeping comment on European history, made by an older priest in France, says that the English and the Germans were uncivilized until "we" took our faith to them. If "we" means the Church, then the comment is right as a summary. If it means the French, then it is not quite right. The Chrisitanization of the English was undertaken by missionaries from Ireland and from the continent, not all of whom came from Gaul. The most renowned mission to the Germans was that of St. Boniface, an Englishman. But all of that pertains to late antiquity or the early middle ages, and the priest's line in the movie could actually have reflected views of Frenchmen by the early 1600s, whose grasp of European history might have been strongly influenced, and distorted, by the more recent part of it.

Joan of Arc is called "St. Joan." Her sainthood would have been, I suppose, accepted in an informal sense in France in the early 1600's. But she was not actually canonized a saint in the Catholic Church until the 1920s. Quite a few canonized Catholic saints were in serious trouble with the Church during their lifetimes, but Joan is the only one that I know of who was actually put to death by the Church, to the especially horrible death of being burned alive. It was the Church under the control of her English enemies, but it was still the official Catholic Church. That was long before Luther.
