Otto Preminger's 1960 adaptation of Leon Uris's novel is a sprawling 220-minute tale of the founding of modern Israel, starring Paul Newman as a Resistance leader. The film works best as an example of Preminger's estimable skill with all levels of drama and action, but as a reflection upon history it is compromised by stereotypes, unpersuasive relationships, and a certain moral ambivalence about issues related to the subject. There are good and exciting sequences, however, particularly one involving an effort to break through a British blockade and get to the homeland. --Tom Keogh

Description
Inspired by Leon Uris' international bestseller, this "extraordinarily moving" (The New Republic) chronicle of the rebirth of a people and the establishment of a nation is the ultimate experience in human drama. Nominated* for three Academy Awards® and winner* for Best Score, Exodus is an "exciting, dramatic, scenic, panoramic and deeply moving" (New York Daily News) masterpiece. Ari Ben Canaan (Paul Newman), a commander of the Israeli underground, manages to lead 600 Jews from the detention camps of Cyprus onto a large freighter bound for Palestine. But British forces soon learn of his plan and insist that he turn back. Undaunted, Ari and his passengers refuse to give up, risking their lives for the greater cause of Israeli independence.

exodus.......2007-04-19
I have always enjoyed this movie ever since I saw it in the city of Melbourne, at the Esquire theatre about thirty eight years ago. There is only one fault I can find and that is the print,so I ask that it might be remastered its original 70mm negative and 5.1 digital sound and of course 16.9 enhanced screen. The current print is in 4.3 and letterbox and it does not suit my new widescreen t.v So how about it M.G.M

A decent film........2007-03-23
Overall this is a decent film. Compared to the book, the film is definitely intended to evoke more sympathy for the Jewish plight in Europe after WWII, considering it focuses almost entirely on the DP camps in Cyprus, whereas the book devotes equal attention to the DP camps and the actual political and military maneuvering involved in building the state of Israel. One note definitely in favor of the film is that it's depection of the Exodus incident follows the historical facts a little bit more accurately. All in all, still a pretty good film, glad I bought it.
A 210-Minute Run-Time Does Not Alone A Great Film Make.......2007-03-22
Not in the same class as the David Leans films of the era, Exodus still tells a weighty tale. Set in the Mediterranean and Mid-East right after World War Two, this story of Jewish refugees and the struggle to establish Israel seems in the twenty-first century both fascinatingly historic and also sorrowfully naive. I kept wondering what the central characters from the 1940's would have thought had they been able to see the future and glimpse what their idealistic experiment in colonization would set in motion over the next sixty years. Paul Newman has great presence in this movie, and is particularly pleasing when he privately mocks the bigoted British officer who claims he can "always spot the face of a Jew." However it is Saul Mineo, playing a displaced Jewish teen, whose on-screen anger at the world steals the show from its stars. Exodus moves slowly but still manages to exclude an excess of depth from its plot. I also knew almost from the start that the innocent blonde Danish girl was surely marked for sacrifice, and this almost seemed tedious. As I watched Exodus I often contemplated what the film might have been in the hands of David Lean, or even a young Stanley Kubric, because there was something choppy about the final product, especially in the ways scenes were so obviously spliced together in an attempt to give the illusion that a conversation was going on when in actuality actors were speaking lines not to one another but to an empty set. It was little things like that more than even its unnecessarily long run-time that brought Exodus from classic to near-classic. Even its soundtrack lacked the force of a masterpiece.
Birth of Israel.......2007-03-08
A very well made movie depicting the early days of Israel. Leon Uris did a great job putting it in print. Robert Newman did the main character justice

Complex yet utterly compelling, The Exodus Decoded is presented by movie director James Cameron (Titanic) but is the passion of Jewish-Canadian filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici. Jacobovici has extensively researched evidence that the Biblical account of the Exodus was real, and concludes that it actually took place in 1500 BCE (during the reign of pharaoh Ahmos I), historically known as the Hyksos Expulsion. The Hyksos people were a Semitic race about whom little is known. But their departure from Egypt, following a long enslavement, along with early writings and other physical evidence, make a strong case that they are the Hebrews of lore. Jacobovici suggests the Exodus is also connected to the catastrophic eruption of the Santorini volcano, which ended the Minoan civilization and triggered a limnic eruption (a surge of carbon dioxide) in the Nile river delta. The latter would have killed the river's fish but likely chased out all the frogs, a phenomenon that could have been considered one of the famous plagues in the Exodus story. (Jacobovici makes a case for the other so-called plagues also being a consequence of the eruption.) Whatever one's opinion of The Exodus Decoded as a historical documentary, it is engrossing viewing, shot in some truly exotic locations, often under the highly suspicious eye of Egyptian authorities. Several moments--such as the revelation of a Hyksos slave's rock carving, pleading with God to be rescued--are astonishing. --Tom Keogh
Description
At the very heart of Judaism, Christianity and Islam lies the story of the Exodus, an epic tale of plagues, miracles and revelations. But the truth behind these events has been obscured by faith and time--until now. After six years of unprecedented research, host Simcha Jacobovici and a team of renowned archeologists, Egyptologists, geologists, and theologians shed revelatory new light on the Exodus and the era's ruling Egyptian Dynasty. Their new theory pushes events hundreds of years earlier than previously thought, allowing age-old stories to sparkle with new perspectives and startling historical import. Using elaborate, state-of-the-art CGI, THE EXODUS DECODED offers a stunning virtual account of stories like the birth of Moses, the ten plagues, and the parting of the Red Sea, revealing once and for all the difference between acts of Nature and the hand of God. Also included is a bonus disc that examines two pivotal figures of the Exodus--Moses and Ramses the Great--as well as the Ark of the Covenant. DVD Features: History in the Making Featurette; 3 Bonus Programs; Interactive Menus; Scene Selection

History or Faith?.......2007-06-10
I would like to say that I enjoyed watching this documentary a lot. In fact it influenced me to do a research paper on the Hyksos for my Ancient Egyptian history class. After doing such research, I realized how selective Jacobovici is. I'm sure for the average believer from an Abrahamic faith who hasn't studied much ancient history, archeology, or anthropology, this documentary may improve and reinforce their faith.
However, with the knowledge I have now, I see the selectivity in Jacobovici work. He uses the Bible as his base, picks the parts of Egyptian history which seem convenient for his purposes, and totally ignores the fact that the Hyksos were not slaves (and there isn't a historical record for the ancient Hebrews being slaves in Egypt outside the Bible). He completely portrays the Hyksos as the Hebrews described in the OT of the Bible rather than what we know through modern day Egyptology (a small group of Semitic nomads from Palestine who through infiltration took advantage of political weakness during the Second Intermediate Period and rose to power in the 15th Dynasty). Furthermore, the Hyksos were able to gain control of Lower (Northern) Egypt due to their advanced military technology. For example, Exhibit N in the film portrays a man on a chariot chasing another man, according to the film these are "the Egyptians chasing the Hebrews." However, there is strong evidence to show that during this period, the Hyksos reintroduced the chariot which had fell into disuse until that time in ancient Egypt. The ancient Egyptians adopted many new military technologies and used them to drive out the Hyksos.
Nonetheless, I would give credit to Jacobovici to having done such research such as looking into the scientific explanation for the plagues, how Hebrews (or Hyksos) may have traveled to present day Greece, and few others.
I also understand that many of these networks are moderate to conservative in their presentation of history so not to offend any religious people by giving a whole new twist or proving anyones history false. Whether you are a believer or not, this documentary is fun to watch and will educate you.
great documentary and to Mr Cords one star -a response............2007-05-25
You either hate or like Jacobovovich, I like his style, he's also very dogged when it comes to the facts about whatever topic he is pursuing. I found his quest for the possible explanations and his statement at the end of the DVD very good perspectives. Mr. Cord attacks him for not digging the sea of reeds for evidence of egyption remains. Well he could not get a permit to do that. He was watched very carefully by egyption authorities and had to use his wits to get the footage he got. I would like to see what would result were this line of reasoning allowing the Hyksos to be the people of the exodus, fully pursued archeologically. Many of the sites are in egypt and the authorities are hostile to the whole idea, history and may not allow it........
Tabloid history at it's worst! .......2007-04-04
Director Simcha Jacobovici is fast becoming the Geraldo Rivera of historical biblical documentaries. In this film he manages to "solve" numerous mysteries that have eluded biblical researchers for centuries all in one fell swoop, almost stumbling onto "evidence" as he walks along! To the casual viewer, he presents a compelling case for his theory that the Hebrew exodus out of Egypt occured long earlier than previously believed during the reign of Pharoah Ahmose rather than during the time of Rameses II. He selectively morphs bits of evidence and words into an almost convincing arguement. But one piece of information that Jacobovici conveniently "overlooks" is Chapter I, verse 11 of the book of Exodus which clearly states that the enslaved Hebrews built the cities of Pithom and Raamses, both ordered constructed by Pharoah Rameses himself. Although the Bible does not specifically mention the Pharoah by name, this verse in Exodus is strong proof that the Hebrews had to be enslaved in Egypt during the time of Rameses II! Does Jacobovici want us to believe that ALL the other verses in Exodus are reliable, but this particular verse is not? Or that the Hebrews mysteriously returned to Egypt long after they escaped to build a few cities out of charity for Rameses II? Such is the case with most of this film. Jacobovici correctly points out that the Red Sea is not the correct location for the famous "parted sea" crossing of the Hebrews. He shows footage of divers fruitlessly searching for Egyptian remains at the bottom of the Red Sea. Yet, after he pinpoints with certainty what he believes to be the EXACT location of the crossing, he makes no mention of, or attempt to look for, ANY Egyptian remains at the site he says is called "The place where God devoured". This film is tabloid archaeology, and the sad thing is that viewers with little or no knowledge of biblical research will accept Jacobovici's mishmash as fact. If you are considering purchasing this DVD, save your money. There are numerous books and DVDs that offer far more reliable information on the story of the exodus and Egypt in general. Seek them out.
Very good production from a scientific point of view.......2007-04-03
This is a very good representation of a scientist's theory of what happened during the Exodus. Whether you believe him or not, he has done a bang up job at being as thorough a researcher as the local laws would allow him. People are always going to believe what they want; no amount of evidence will change their minds. But I like how entertaining this production is.
Not everything is completely explained, though. This production does not explain how the low travelling gas (aka the angel of death) killed every firstborn male animal as well as Egyptian. The animals would have all been together. No one would have taken the time to separate the firstborn of every male animal, so the explanation of the firstborn sons of Egypt does not touch on the animals' deaths.
The figurines on the Ark of the Covenant were cherubim, or angels, not birds. The cherubim are to have their wings spread upward, overshadowing the cover with them. The cherubim are to face each other, looking toward the cover. The image that is shown in the production is of two birds facing each other, but with their wings were not overshadowing the cover with them - they were splayed back as if they were about to take to flight.
Also, nowhere in Exodus does it say that the Hebrews suffered any of the plagues Egypt was tormented by. We assume that the scourge affected everyone, but the plagues were God's tools which He used to convince the pharoah to let His people go. The Hebrews were the people God was protecting, while the plagues were inflicted on Egypt as signs to the pharoah.
Overall, it was a very good production. I respect the scientific explanations with neutraility toward religion. It was not designed to slam anyone's faith, and I do not believe it does. It was a very well balanced and educational look at Biblical history from a scientific point of view.
Interesting Theories of Revisionist History.......2007-04-02
Jacobovici presents interesting theories of possible natural causes for the 10 plagues, but like the Midas Muffler man, he "makes it all fit" by juggling dates and numbers. He pushes the date of the Exodus back to 1500 BC and moves the date of the Santorini eruption up 100 years from 1600 to 1500 BC to make the theory work. He claims that Jacob migrated to Egypt in 1700 BC and that they remained there for 200 years. This is a direct contradiction of Exodus 12:40 which distinctly says that they were there for 430 years which would bring the Exodus to around 1270 BC, not 1500 BC and long after the Hyksos expulsion. Also it is highly irregular to equate the Israelites, a farming and herding people who only migrated into Egypt due to famine, with the Hyksos who were a trading and warlike people who took Lower Egypt by conquest and held it for 108 years; they were not slaves in need of deliverance. The Hyksos were not freed due to the 10 plagues; they had to be driven out by the armed forces of Middle Kingdom Pharoah Ahmose who had evidence that they were forming an alliance with the Nubians to take over Egypt entirely.
Jacobovici's claim that the 10th plague was caused by carbon dioxide bubbling up from the water due to seismic activity as in the case of Lake Nyos in the Camaroon in 1986 seems plausible enough, but that was a lake of standing water. Iron deposits and gasses would not normally bubble up in a fast river current as in the case of the Nile. Plus he claims that the reason that only the first-born of Egypt died was because the first-born were highly honored and slept on the first floor as opposed to servants and poor who would have slept on the roofs and thereby not have been exposed to the gas. But would not Pharoah and the royal household also have had the same honors ? and yet none of them died. And would the fact that the Israelites were standing up celebrating the first Passover have been adequate to have kept them from succumbing? Don't gasses rise?
Jacobovivi uses the wall paintings in a tomb at Beni Hasan showing a seeming migration of distinctly non Egyptian peoples with non Egyptian dress and hairstyles to prove that this is evidence of Jacob and his family coming to Egypt in 1700 BC. But the inscriptions date the event to the 6th year of Sesostris II, ca. 1890 BC and are merely a caravan of Semitic traders bringing goods to Egypt for trade. He then uses mass graves of men only, near Avaris to prove the 10th plague of the first-born sons, but again, archeologists findings show that the skeletons range from 18-25 years of age and none younger and many have arrow tips imbedded in them suggesting that these were casualties of war, perhaps even Hyksos soldiers killed by the armies of Ahmose when he drove them out of Lower Egypt. Then Jacobovici goes on to postulate that along with the "mixed company" that left with Moses were Minoans from Avaris who may have crafted the golden Ark of the Covenant and then later sailed back to their homeland and created golden amulets accurately depicting the ark. But the Bible does not mention Minoans as being the goldsmiths who crafted the ark and the Minoans in Avaris were traders who were free to come and go at any time. There is no reason why they would have followed Moses into the Sinai for 40 years incurring the wrath of Pharoah and then return to their homeland later. Plus the amulets are not accurate depictions of the ark which had two cherubim on the lid, not two birds.
And then too, one does wonder why an all creative and omnipotent God would have found it necessary to use the volcano at Santorini to destroy the entire Minoan civilization and other coastal cultures (which had no responsibility whatsoever for Israelite slavery)in order to punish Pharoah with carbon dioxide gas and tsunami's in Egypt. It seems a bit clumsy and inconsiderate to me.

Description
During the Exodus, one of the most famous miracles of the Old Testament took place. More than 3000 years have passed since Moses led two million Israelites across the Red Sea and out of the bondage of Egypt. It is a topic that so fascinated Hollywood director Cecil B. DeMille that he made The Ten Commandments, twice. Steven Spielberg also took on the story in The Prince Of Egypt. Now The Exodus Revealed follows the footsteps of the children of Israel on an unforgettable journey of discovery. A journey that reveals physical evidence for the Exodus, including: the remains of 3800 year old Hebrew settlements in Egypt's Nile Delta; Egyptian records of the Israelites' bondage under Pharaoh; the precise route they may have followed to freedom; their crossing site on shore of the Red Sea; and the location of Mt. Sinai.

THE EXCITING, TRUE, EXODUS CROSSING!.......2007-04-09
DID YOU MISS IT? For 3500 YEARS the desert has held the secret of the true Exodus Crossing, the Route of the Exodus, the true Mount Sinai where God gave Moses the ten commandments. Now you can see the DVD of recent discovery with overwhelming evidence to the Biblical record. Here's the story. Every believer deserves to see these films.
Imagine following the true route of the Exodus, the Red Sea Crossing, and seeing the real Mount Sinai. This mountain is also known in Scripture as Mount Horeb where God visited Moses in Midian at the burning bush, where he brought the Hebrew nation out from Egypt, where God gave him the Ten Commandments, and the cave where Elijah saw God pass by. For 3500 years, man has not known the true mountain, but now in modern times, the route and the mountain have been rediscovered with overwhelming evidence, as well as following the exact descriptions of the words of the Bible.
GOD taught us something at this true Exodus Crossing. There are times in our lives when we seem to be caught in the east with our backs to the Red Sea, YAM-SUPH, on a beach called NUWEIBA. And Pharaoh's army of 600 war chariots is attacking from the west down the eighteen mile gorge with 1500 foot cliffs. Indeed, they've arrived at the Mouth of the Gorge, PI HAHIROTH, facing us. And our whole situation seems incredibly hopeless. There is only one thing to do. Surrender the situation to God and see his plan unfold.
Moses parted the Reed Sea.......2007-03-03
Check the Hebrew [Yam Suf]is the Reed Sea: Meaning fresh water where reeds grow. Moses did not get that far with the children of Israel, he would have went through the wilderness long before reaching the Red Sea that is more the 120 miles from Goshen too far to travel in the time mentioned in the Bible. Moses would have parted one of the Sea of Reeds not the Red Sea as it has been mistranslated into the English Bible.
Not what we thought.......2007-02-23
Pretty boring. We were expecting a movie and ended up with a documentary.
A good case on were the read see crossing are. .......2007-02-07
Since I have intrested in this hypothesis for several years I find the film a good presentation of the material that are at hand rigth know. It builds upp a strong case for the probability that the read see crossing are in the Aqaba gulf and mount Sinai are in Arabia. But it begins with the question if there ever has been an exodus.
But you are left with questions like: Are there other interpretations of the findings that are said to prove that there has been a yewish setelment in Egypt? What about the usual dating of the conquest of Canan in 1250 BC? (This theory follows the biblical dating wih is about 1450.) A one hour movie can not debate all these questions but if you do not have any knowledge before you can draw the conclusion that it is more simple than it is. A hint of these problems would have made the film better.

I liked the way the evidence was prepared and presented. If viewed with open mind and a humbled heart you can gain much insight of the Exodus and crossing of the Red Sea.

The second volume of episodes from the cult cable science fiction series Farscape finds the motley crew of fugitives still learning to live together, with often fractious results. A swarm of interstellar insects infiltrate Moya in "Exodus from Genesis" and crank up the heat to levels that will prove fatal to Aeryn's heat-sensitive Sebacean system. The heat wave isn't the only thing pushing already flaring tempers, however; the bugs create perfect replicas of the crew to carry out their commands, which lead to some rather interesting clashes. The episode echoes elements of Star Trek's "The Devil in the Dark" and the Next Generation episode "Evolution" (among others), then twists them to fit into the chaotic Farscape universe.
In "Throne for a Loss," the most action-packed and stylishly directed episode to date, a race of mercenary criminals called the Tavleks kidnap the imperious Rygel. Despite the temptation to leave the blustering coward behind, the crew hatches a (typically) half-cooked plan to storm the planet-side prison with the help of a dangerously addictive Tavlek power gauntlet. The adrenaline-pumping, laser-blasting weapon increases the aggressive natures of D'Argo and Aeryn to tyrannical levels but also leads to a quiet connection between the warriors as they recover from the drug's effects and compare notes on their human shipmate: "Just imagine, there's a whole race of Crichtons running around. Think how useless they must be."
Each episode includes footage unseen in the U.S. broadcasts, and the DVD features a profile of Claudia Black's character Aeryn Sun as well as commentary on each episode. Director Brian Henson and costar Virginia Hey (Zhaan) discuss the process of defining and developing their characters in the early episodes on "Exodus from Genesis" and stars Ben Browder and Claudia Black exchange playful repartee for the energetic commentary on "Throne for a Loss." --Sean Axmaker
Description
"Exodus from Genesis": Fortunately, a strange interstellar phenomenon conceals Moya's location from a Peacekeeper marauder. Unfortunately, the phenomenon is a swarm of Drak, insect-like creatures that mysteriously infest Moya. Soon, the space insects begin using the ship as a breeding "host," sending the temperature within Moya skyrocketing--perilously high for Aeryn's heat-sensitive Sebacean system. But the infestation within is nothing compared to danger lurking outside!
"Throne for a Loss": When a cargo negotiation with the bloodthirsty, money-hungry Tavleks turns into a kidnapping, Moya's crew must race against time and tempers to save the abducted Rygel. But a captured Tavlek is no even trade for a wealthy dominar. Crichton, Aeryn, and D'Argo have no choice but to use a dangerously addictive, adrenalin-pumping gauntlet stolen from the Tavleks to save their pompous companion and retrieve the crystal Rygel has stolen that is causing Moya's orbit to decay.
Customer Reviews:
Crichton tries to fit in with his Farscape crew mates.......2003-01-10
I started watching the first season of "Farscape" on DVD without ever having seen the show on television (I knew it was the show with the blue skinned woman and that was about it). My assumption is that nobody is going to come to Volume 2 of Season 1 without having watched Volume 1. Consequently, I get to engage more in commentary than description for this review.
"Exodus from Genesis" is a story designed to have Crichton (Ben Browder) earn the respect of his crewmates. Moya is invaded by aliens who are able to assume the form of the crew. If that is not enough fun a squad of Peacekeepers boards the ship as well. Like the previous episode, "I, E.T.," this is another instance where "Farscape" is getting ahead of itself. Episode 3 is too soon to be doing a story where the actors play reproductions or possessed versions of their characters. We still have so much to learn about these characters, which means details like the problems Aeryn (Claudia Black) has with high temperatures is of more interest than how many copies of Crichton can show up in one room.
"Throne for a Loss" find Rygel kidnapped and held for ransom. Crichton, Aeryn, and D'Argo (Anthony Simcoe) go off to rescue the floating puppet. Their efforts are compromised by the acquisition of a gauntlet, the weapon used by the bad guys. Unfortunately, the gauntlet tends to make its user a bit psychotic, as each of the trio of rescuers discovers. However, Crichton wants to rely on good old human honesty to save the day rather than alien technology. The most interesting part of this episode is back on Moya, when Zhaan (Virginia Hey) is trying to help their prisoner deal with the loss of his gauntlet and the addictive chemicals it provides its user. Of course Zhaan is the most fascinating character on the show and every new revelation about her becomes another piece of the puzzle.
One thing that is already clear to me by this second disc from the first season is that "Farscape" is extremely fan friendly when it comes to putting the episodes out on DVD. First, the episodes contain previously unbroadcast footage, which means all the stuff they cut to show "Farscape" on American television (apparently we have 3-4 minutes more commercials than the rest of the civilized world). Second, all of the episodes feature commentary by a pair of cast and crewmembers: Brian Henson and Virginia Hey on Episode 3 and Ben Browder and Claudia Black on Episode 4. I assume future DVDs will continue to mix and match these people in various combinations. Having two people engage in a conversation works well and all the participants tend to talk about not just the particular episode but also their characters and the series overall.
"Exodus"--3 stars; "Throne"--4 stars.......2002-11-20
"Farscape" has developed into one of the best shows on television. Enjoyment of these early episodes is enhanced by the addition of deleted material and lively commentary. "Escape from Exodus" is an enjoyable story, but far from "Farscape" at its best. The tale of an infestation by space parasites is enlivened by entertaining character interaction, always one of this show's strengths. "Throne for a Loss," on the other hand, is terrific. Rygel, as despicably hilarious as ever, is kidnapped by the Tavleks, a race of warriors who rely on an addictive drug, administered through "power gauntlets," to heighten their power and aggression. To save Rygel, Aeryn, Crichton, and D'Argo all take their turns with the weapon, and the way in which it affects each of them provides interesting and amusing insights into their characters. The way in which Crichton resolves the conflict is perfect.
Thrown for a loop!.......2002-03-13
As a Farscape 'fledgling' (always seem to get into shows in the second season) I'm enthralled with this series.
Exodus from Genesis explores the developing relationships between the ship's crew during a crisis on Moya. It painfully lets us experience how totally inept poor Crichton feels by being thrust into the alien universe in which he finds himself. Beatuiful acting on the part of Claudia and Virginia in many scenes, interspersed with some amusing segments in spite of the seriousness of the situations they encounter.
Throne for a Loss depicts Rigel at his best and worst. Gives a keen insight into his more sinister traits. I had no difficulty understanding why the crew were (a little) tempted to leave him planetside after his abduction.
The extras on the DVD were wonderful and the commentaries thoroughly enjoyable.
Terrific Treat for SF Fans!.......2002-02-23
One of the strengths of good sf on television is that it takes the characters and basic elements of its "universe" and adds to and develops them. FARSCAPE is no exception to this rule, and does it quite wonderfully in this pair of episodes.
"Exodus From Genesis" is about a bug infestation on Moya, and the surprising truth of what is behind it. With a commentary track version of the episode by Brian Henson and Virginia Hey, the episode has some very good character interaction, and the extra footage on the disc presents some rather intriguing material for fans of Zhaan. Solid episode, good story, with some neat visual effects.
"Throne for a Loss" is an episode that deals with an attempt on Moya's crew to trade with beings called Tavleks that takes an unexpected turn when Rygel is kidnapped for ransom. Excellent sense of humour in this episode with some great lines from various cast members, and the extra footage here makes the episode worthwhile. However, when one adds the commentary track with Ben Browder and Claudia Black, one has an episode version that offers all kinds of insights into the episode and how it was made (among other subjects discussed by the two actors).
Overall, a marvellous DVD and well worth adding to any collection of sf discs - but even better that it's a FARSCAPE one!
Nice episodes, great extras.......2001-09-10
I admit it--I came a bit late to the Farscape party. But ever since my jump into the series during the mid-point of season two, I've been hooked. So, I'm delighed that the entire series is coming on DVD and giving a relatively new fan like myself a chance to catch up on the early days in the Uncharted Territories.
And this DVD contains one of my favorite episodes from the first six or so and then one that's pretty darn good. The "pretty darn good one" is Exodus from Genesis which features parasites who feed on Moya. The story works because it does what Farscape does best--takes an old sci-fi convention and gives it a new spin. There's also some character development along the way, which is always a good thing.
The second episode is one of my personal favorites--"Throne for a Loss." Rygel is kidnapped by the Tavleks, who think he's a high-ranking offical that Moya's crew will pay generously to have returned to them. The premise of the episode works well and it's interesting to see the character relationships begin to grow and gel a bit. But the highlight of the story is that while the situation is serious, there is still some great humor thrown in. It's Farscape in the finest tradition--intelligent, witty and fun. Definitely worth seeing--even if you're not a Farscape fan.
What throws this DVD other the top though is the extras. Both episodes include commentaries that really help the episodes become more interesting. The commentary on Throne for a Loss is a hoot, featuring series stars Ben Browder (Crichton) and Claudia Black (Aeryn). There's an infectous energy in the the commentary that carries over to the episode and helps give some now insights into the series and its early days.
So, if you're a long time Scaper, get this one for the commentaries. If you're a new fan, get this one to see two episodes that show just why Farscape is some of the best sci-fi on TV today.

King Gainer is King of Good Action and Fun!!.......2005-05-10
Some anime delve into deep philosophy and psychology. Some anime are pure fanservice or gore. Some anime are soap operas while some anime are comedy.
The anime Overman King Gainer is just damn GOOD FUN. The previous volume one started off in action with a bang and in this second volume the story continues at a good exciting pace with room for nice character evolution (with a look at Gain's past) and wonderful humor.
We're introduced to a new villian with a fierce hatred for our beloved Gain. I don't want to spoil too much about him, so I'll just say the new bad guy is sadistic and obsessed. My kind of favorite bad guy! Y'know like Dilandu from Escaflowne?
Anyways, the new mecha we see are awesome! They're so colorful and fantastic. I love the animation in this anime. Characters are easily distinguishable. My younger brothes desperately want the mechas as toys. So c'mon Bandai, give us a toy King Gainer!!
There are still many episodes to go, but right now I'm digging this show. It is a good anime with good re-watch value. It's worth the price and time. Still not convinced? Then rent it! This is a MUST SEE anime for 2005!
