As far as ice-skating movies go (or those that prominently feature the cold-bladed sport), this romantic movie is one of the best, thanks to utterly charming performances by underrated actors D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly. The couple play, respectively, a washed-up hockey player and a prima-donna skater who end up in doubles figure skating together at the Winter Olympics. Of course, the mismatched pair fall in love. In between, there's a lot of verbal sparring, talk of toe picks, and surprisingly skillful directing by Paul Michael Glaser (Kazaam, The Air Up There). Direction here is critical--unlike in Flashdance, where the dancing was done in the shadows, face and feet obviously shot separately--and The Cutting Edge credibly highlights the actors and their professional stand-ins. This is such a fun, sweet story that the facts the film takes liberties with--including the alacrity with which a hockey player takes to Olympic-level figure skating--are easily forgivable. --N.F. Description

Moira Kelly (Dangerous Beauty, "The West Wing") and D. B. Sweeney (Roommates, Memphis Belle) star as polar opposites who unite on the ice for a shot at Olympic gold in this inspirational romantic comedy from acclaimed director Paul M. Glaser (The Running Man). Brimming with wit, charm and plenty of breathtaking sports action, The Cutting Edge is a real winner!

She's a rich and refined pairs figure skater whose prima donna attitude has her skating solo. He's a brash, blue-collar hockey champion with a new injury and no future. With nothing in common but their dream of reaching the Olympics, Kate and Doug are each other's last resort. Reluctantly, they join forces, but its not long before the barbs - and sparks - start flying as the unlikely pair skate towards the opportunity of a lifetime: a chance at a medal...and a chance at love.

1 out of 5 stars B-Grade Everything.......2007-06-17

This is one of those films you find yourself laughing at--not because it's got good humor in it, but because of all the things it does wrong. The script is corny, the acting poor, and the story line trite and uninvolving. They don't even show any extended figure skating scenes, which would have at least added a nice note as that is always fun to watch.

The dialogue between the two leads is supposed to be snappy, but with the wooden way they deliver it, it's just dopey (I'm surprised these two actors ever worked again after this film came out...) The two skaters bicker non-stop through the whole movie and then are supposed to fall in love at the end, though I didn't buy it for a minute. They are both unlikeable, as characters and as actors, so I didn't care what happened to them in the end...unless they would have fallen through the ice, which would have ended this dull ice skating movie on the proper note.

5 out of 5 stars Magnifico!.......2007-05-17

English has words for most emotions, but sometimes Italian is more effective. I saw this movie for the first time seventeen years after it came out, and I found it exactly "Magnifico".
Ice-skating has always represented in my immaginary one of the forms of "gracefullness" that can be acheived in competitive sports. Another is surely gymnastics.
This very well written movie deals with a beautiful and fascinating sport, but also adds to this advantage a story of failures, dreams, efforts and "Great Expectations" (Kate gives Doug this book for Christmas). The plot somewhat resembles "The Taming of the Shrew", with a femine character that is whitty, sassy and tempremental and a male character that steadily somehow tames her. However, we don't live in Skakespeare's times anymore, so the parity of sexes must be respected, with also the man giving in at last to love.
Nothing is more romantic than the meeting of disparities, and this is exactly what happens here.
A pretty, talented, rich, spoiled and introverse young figure skater, Kate Mosely, finds herself without a partner. Thanks to the long eye of her Russian trainer, she has the occasion of trying out the retired hockey player Doug Dorsey, that slightly intimidated by the girl and the situation, but at the same time desiring to skate again and compete decides to pair up with her in the attempt to qualify for the Olympic games.
One of the points of force of this movie is the dialogue between the couple which is fast, humoristic and a pleasure to follow. Another is the evident attraction between the actors which goes right to the heart.
The scenography is also very good, with the winter scenes that add magic to the atmosphere and the training scenes with the skaters alone on the rink.
Obviously some of the sport scenes are impossible, as skaters have rightly pointed out, and the plot resolves as expected, but I believe this movie can be classified as a romantic classic and will stand the test of time.

5 out of 5 stars The best romantic comedy drama of the 90's!.......2007-04-12

People may say that My Best Friends Wedding was the best romantic comedy of the 90's, but I have to say that this one is my all-time favorite! Julia Roberts is great and banked a lot of bucks for the movie studios, however The Cutting Edge proves you don't need big-name stars for a film to excel on all levels. You can read what this film is about already, I just wanted to say that if you have overlooked this or if it is not in your collection already, you are missing out! 5 stars!

4 out of 5 stars The Cutting Edge - Gold Medal Edition.......2007-02-24

The fil is good and interesting, you can enjoy and pass the time

5 out of 5 stars Cutting Edge.......2007-01-29

Definately one of the best skating/love stories ever. It's humerous and both actors play their parts so well.

"Editing is what makes film a film." That audacious statement is made at the beginning of this 2005 documentary about the art of film editing. After listening to many editors and directors, movie novices as well as cinephiles may agree. Kathy Bates narrates this whirlwind history of the art punctuated by dozens of scenes to illustrate the effect of film editing in heightening reality and making a visceral impact on the filmgoer. In fact, the profession seems to be run on "a gut feeling" whether it's clipping a few frames, or 20 minutes of the final act (which we learn happened with Lenny). James Cameron illustrates the importance of a frame as we see a scene from Terminator 2 with 1 frame out 24 missing (24 frames representing one second of film). Or as Quentin Tarantino states, "musicians have notes, editors have frames." It's fascinating to see how editing--the process of assembling the film after it's been shot--can save films, make performances better, and become the ultimate jigsaw puzzle. The last concept is demonstrated as we return time and again to the most well-known editor of the time, Walter Murch (Apocalypse Now, The English Patient), as he edits a few scenes from Cold Mountain in front of us. We see how he works with light, covers mistakes, and controls emotion. For those who wished for a sequel to the excellent documentary on cinematographers, Visions of Light (1993), here's the next step (although made by different folks including first-time director Wendy Apple). Now, anyone want to tackle art directors? --Doug Thomas

Description

Bullitt's dynamic editing, highlighted by its twisting, squealing, hill-leaping chase sequence that leaves viewers whooping and woozy, earned a 1968 Best Film Editing Oscar and helped make the film an action classic. How do film editors work this kind of magic? This fascinating program lets you in on the secrets. "What makes a movie a movie is the editing," says Zach Staenberg, Academy Award-winning* editor of the Matrix trilogy. Closeups, flashbacks, parallel action, slow motion, juxtaposition of images - these are just a few tools that make clips from Birth of a Nation to Pulp Fiction, The Battleship Potemkin to Gladiator indelible. Narrated by Kathy Bates and with interviews of a who's who of contemporary directors and editors, The Cutting Edge: The Magic of Movie Editing is, shot for shot and frame after frame, reel magic.

5 out of 5 stars cutting edge dvd.......2007-05-09

As a Media teacher, this DVD is an excellent resource for my students - it outlines the history of narrative through montage, from its earliest days, through 'important' developments of such directors as Griffiths and Eisenstein. It also explores the function of a variety of styles and techniques that have become conventions in specific genres. Perhaps most valuably it has some of the 'greats' of directing and editing discussing the editing process. While it is Amero-centric in terms of its subject matter, it is entirely appropriate for my students.

4 out of 5 stars Power of the Cut!.......2007-04-04

There is much you can say about this except Awesome! It is great to see some of the behind the scenes that is needed to understand what an editor does. I have to admit, I didn't have any idea as to what the editors job was and now I do. Wonderful story told the way it should. There are some foul mouth parts but the message that it gives is worth it. If you are a video production instructor, this is a MUST HAVE resource.

5 out of 5 stars Better than expected.......2007-04-04

A surprisingly entertaining piece. Made editing more of an art than a technical undertaking.

5 out of 5 stars great documentary.......2007-01-16

It's one of a kind doumentary about editing. It enhances the importance of the craft in the making of movies. It covers the history and different cutting styles, interviews and plenty of film clips. I was hungry for more, so far there is not another documentary on the subject.

3 out of 5 stars A useful historic overview.......2006-11-05

Although I had hoped, judging from the title, that this movie would delve into the craft of editing, which it really doesn't, it does offer an interesting historic overview of the increasingly important role of the editor. The interviewed editors and directors are all leading Hollywood folks, and it's Hollywood's history all the way. One could spend lots of time reviewing the many clips from major films that are used as illustrations and learn a lot from them.
What I liked least, is the high percentage of violent and fast-cut film clips used. Towards the end, several editors speak about how today's youger generations can follow ad absorb the sensory overload, and "that's what they want." Well, that's Hollywood for you.

Also known as The Cutting Edge 2, Going for the Gold is both a sequel to and a remake of the 1992 film with Moira Kelly and D.B. Sweeney. After their skating careers came to an end, Kate and Doug opened a rink. In addition, he became a sports commentator and she became a coach. Jackie (Christy Carlson Romano, Even Stevens, Kim Possible) is their daughter. Like her parents, she's a figure skater, but an injury forces her to turn to pairs. In the meantime, her parents encourage her to take a vacation. While in California, she meets talented surfer/in-line skater Alex (Ross Thomas), who takes a more "extreme sports" approach to life. The uptight Jackie and laid-back Alex hit it off at first, but their romance quickly fizzles (Doug was a hockey player in the original Cutting Edge). Jackie returns home to start looking for a pairs partner. When Alex hears the news, just as a lucrative endorsement deal has fallen through, he travels to Connecticut to audition. Turns out, he's just as good on the ice as on the asphalt (and in the ocean). A partnership is born. Of course, the two bicker at first--plus Alex has a girlfriend--but as they learn to skate together, true love inevitably blooms. Featuring Olympic gold medallist Oksana Baiul as a skating analyst and Ryan Hansen (Veronica Mars) as one of Alex's surfing buddies. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

3 out of 5 stars Figure skating and adolescence. Less than "Magnifico"........2007-05-17

Skating movies are favourites of mine, so the treat of a skating film is a real joy. If you compare "The Cutting Edge - Going for the Gold" to its 1992 parent movie, it comes out pretty bad. The actors, the dialogues, the scenography are inferior and the plot is practically just the same.

However, since movies represent our reality, I want to point out how this work sensibly depicts the problems of adolescence our children are going through. This short sociological and psychological analysis represents my personal opinion and far from me the desire to generalize.
Jackie is the daughter of Kate Mosely and Doug Dorsey, ex Olympic-gold pair figure skaters. She is determined, stubborn, focused and not willing to give up an inch in attaining her goal. Alex is an athletic, somewhat displaced, not determined, easy going young man. Modern adolescents are exactly like this. Girls today have a greater drive to success and a steadier determination in attaing results. They are not quitters. Fifteen years before Jackie's mother had been the one that had thought of quitting because of love problems.
Boys on the other hand are more concerned with their well being, physical form and are less focused on short term goals. When they dont succeed in their dreams, they willingly change objective and carry on.
Fortunately, the director or the writer, has shown how family is the only barrier against the loss of projects and motivations, how it counsels, sustains and reinforces outlooks on life or how it simply shows the young guys how to live a successfull and satisfying life.
In the parent movie (1992) both the character's families represented a handicap to their evolution and the expression of their emotions, in 2006 the family plays instead a leading role in their success.

Some skating scenes are unrealistic, as accurately pointed out by others. But it is interesting to see how this sport is seen in a wider athletic approach to life, with intermingling to in-line rollerskating and surfing. This mixture of athletic disciplines is present also in other movies such as the entertaining "Stick It" or "The Lords of Dogtown".

Both the leading actors are talented, modern and effectively interact.
This movie is not a classic like the original, but in the line or remakes it does present some interesting characteristics and it is entertaing to see.

4 out of 5 stars Good Movie if you aren't a skating fanatic.......2007-02-13

I saw a lot of negative feedback when I was looking to buy this movie. I'll be the first to admit, I don't watch figure skating. I rented this because I was in the mood for a "chick flick". To me, the skating was good, and the story off the ice was even better. There is a chemistry between the two main characters. This movie made me happy when things were going well and sad for them when they weren't. Any movie that makes you feel (well anything other than revolusion) is worth seeing atleast once, and despite the reviews, I will be adding this movie to my collection.

3 out of 5 stars good... but not near as good as.......2007-02-05

The first one is a great movie and I must have seen it a dozen times. Saw this version on TV and thought it was made for TV (after school style). However, it did catch me and if you loved the origional you'll like this movie. If you were blah on the first, you'll hate this one. Appreciate it for the theme, not the story line, or even the acting. Everyone is atractive and if nothing else the female lead does work her eyes well.

2 out of 5 stars "To Win You Have To Be Willing To Fail".......2006-11-30

`The Cutting Edge - Going for the Gold' released in '06 is a classic case of going to the well once too often. Actually I find it hard to believe they even bothered to make this film. Whether you consider this as a remake of the '92 film of the same title starring D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly, or a sequel to an ongoing storyline it fails miserably on both counts. In the first case, who does a remake of a film that's only fourteen years old? Even worse, if this is supposed to be a part two than why is the plot almost exactly the same?

To quote from the movie, "To win you have to be willing to fail." That line turns out to be nothing short of prophetic. This one definitely is a flop. Watch the '92 version and just pretend this one doesn't exist.

1 out of 5 stars Why did they make this movie.......2006-09-06

This is a very poor remake of a very good movie. The character changes and the story line changes were very weak. It was just plain bad. Even if it was made to be a sequel instead of a remake, the characters were not strong enough to make it an exciting movie. And the ending - there was no comparison of the "signature moves" on the Olympic performance with the original movie. Don't waste your time and money on this one.

--N.F. Mendoza

Reluctantly, they join forces, but its not long before the barbsand sparksstart flying as the unlikely pair skate towards the opportunity of a lifetime: a chance at a medal...and a chance at love.

5 stars!

I can't imagine what a class A character actor like Ron Perlman was
doing in this piece of junk. Why would someone of his calibre put their
good name on this sort of clap-trap? I realize that most character actors
consider themselves as "journeymen" of the profession but surely there
had to be a better script around somewhere else that could have appealed
to him!

Why do they always screw up the endings? I was into this movie right from the start. Low budget? Well, it may not have cost very much to make it, but it certainly wasn't like one of those B clunkers. I just felt it could have had a better ending. It's worth the money though. Good movie.

ok this movie starts out very strong and just keeps giving, when i got this movie i had no idea what it was about just new there was five girls and some lesbian kissing thats was good enough for me. ya ya i know.

For a low budget movie this is one of the best i've seen the writing was very reality based text, thing most people would say in the given situations,
acting was great for actors I haven't heard that much about almost the lines and emotions were believeable.

3 out of 5 stars The last suck.......2006-09-25

This film has very good production values, and a reasonably good story-line; a female journalist decides to investigate a web-cam site called Artemis where it appears women act out vampiristic rituals on some poor man - of course she believes it's all trickery.

She goes to interview the head vampire-lady and even upon shaking hands her mind is flooded with erotic lesbian imagery. Unfortunately that's about as far as it goes.

She is met with the vampire lady a few more times, and feels this growing desire, but in the end it comes to nothing really.

I was expecting, as the cover shows, that the head vampire lady would at least bite her in the neck.

In other words this film is full of tantalising images that don't really go anywhere. And for that I was very annoyed. The closest she gets is a bit of blood on her lips but we're not really sure if this is real, or another of her fantastic erotic day-dreams

A much better erotic-vampire film (although no fangs) is Eternal

During WWII the effort to develop an atomic bomb seized America's imagination. In the Cold War, a new effort on par with the Manhattan Project was undertaken as America raced to deploy the Polaris ballistic missile submarines.

Featured on this DVD are eight rare films showing the construction and building of the Polaris boats, and the training of their crews. See a rare full color profile of the Navy's submarine school in New London, and watch technical films of the type used to indoctrinate recruits.

Other films show the development of the Polaris and Poseidon weapons systems, the christening of the SSBN USS Lafayette by First Lady Jackie Kennedy, and the role played by sub tenders with the fleet.

The DVD also includes rare footage of the nuclear attack submarine USS Skate as it transits and then surfaces at the North Pole in 1958 and 1959.

Digitally remastered and restored from original 16mm prints, many of these films have never been available to the public, and some have only recently been declassified. Please note, due to their age and rarity, image and sound quality can vary.

Films are black and white and color. Running time: over two hours.

IMPORTANT: This DVD is presented in the DVD-R format. It may not be compatible with older DVD players. Please check your DVD player's manual for more information.

5 out of 5 stars See How We Submariners Trained to Fight the Cold War.......2006-02-22

The best part of this DVD is the film "Undersea University" which has that wonderful old-timey Kodachrome look. This is a film made at the New London submarine school sometime in the 60's, and wow does it bring back memories. Back then we did not have computers (for the most part) and we relied on all sorts of mechanical simulators for training. You get to see some of these things, including the "tilting tommy" hull mock-ups that really moved back and forth, and the amazing "mission control" simulator the attack boat guys to line up torpedo targets (using 1/72nd scale hull down models of enemy ships that you could actually see thru the periscope!) It is really impressive to see what we did, given the limitations of technology back then. But it wasn't all as much fun as this film makes out. What I really remember from those days was all the endless classroom work and the math, which was a sore point for me. Also interesting for the lubbers (and scary for us) you'll see in this film the training tank we used to simulate escape from a submarine sunk at shallow depth. That was one thing I was not too keen to try but I did do it. Thank God I did not mess up, as Gordo Cooper would say. Nowadays I understand they've discontinued use of the training tanks like this, well you did it forty years too late. There was a neat aspect to all this, incidentally. Time was that we had instructors who were in those water tanks all day long, most of them without use of respirators. One of those guys could hold his breath underwater, without moving mind you, for something like four minutes. You get to see some of this. The film concludes with some footage of the boats we used for training in those days, WWII Guppy conversions, and there's also a visit from what appears to be the George Washington SSBN. At that time going on her was like going to Mars... Also on this DVD is some pretty nostalgic stuff for a guy like me. There's a gorgeous film of Jackie Kennedy christening the USS Lafayette. I'm no Democrat but I always had a fondness for the Kennedys. Jack Kennedy was a big supporter of the Polaris system and worked hard to get it deployed quickly (although Ike was the guy who really got it started). Kennedy even attended a test launch of a Polaris bird just before he was killed and told everybody at that time that Polaris held the key to nuclear stability. So it was a natural that his wife would christen one of the first Polaris boats. The DVD continues with a great film about the Polaris boats, and also some unexpected things. There's a film about the arrangement and organization of the Navy and the Silent Service branch which I wish I'd seen when I got indoctrinated -- might've saved me some grief if I'd realized I was yelling at the wrong folks all the time. Anyway this is again a really nifty DVD which I think anyone would enjoy, sub vet or not.

5 out of 5 stars The Cutting Edge - Learning The Physics Of Submarines.......2006-02-20

THE CUTTING EDGE is the 4th in a series of DVD films by Periscope Films delivering authentic US Naval training and promotional films. In this episode, you'll see how a submariner is trained for the serious business of operating these cutting edge and complex war machines. It all begins at the Submarine Training centers. Without exception, the submariner must be highly trained because they are required to be capable of doing any job, anywhere in the boat.

Although they are not used anymore, it is very interesting to see how we were trained in emergency escapes in the escape training tanks where they were filled with approximately 110 feet of water. This video is very complete in showing the various escape equipment and procedures. Both physical and mental testing eliminates all but the best. These sailors are the cream of the crop by the time they graduate from the school and finally report aboard their first boat. However, the training does not stop there. Once on board, they begin a "qualification process" where they learn every system on their new boat. Once done, they are awarded their "dolphins".

Another segment explains the science of submarines. How is buoyancy achieved and how is this achieved in a submarine? How does the center of gravity effect the boat? Maintaining total stability is not as easy as it seems. However, understanding the basic theories and the physical capabilities of the boat, the submariner can manage the submarine to keep it under control under all conditions.

Take a voyage on the USS Skate. Watch their daily routine on their assigned watches. They train to become proficient in their jobs. Go with them as they plot their position, load a torpedo into a tube for firing and as they man their battle stations. For the old salt this will bring back memories. For those that have never served on a boat, it will give you a taste of what it's like to serve as a United States submariner aboard a nuclear boat.

Life aboard a Fleet Balletic Submarine (FBM) is examined. Their specialized training before they even report to a submarine is reviewed. Once completed, they report to an operational boat. Now, they can apply the over 18 months of previous schools to operate these complex machines and systems.

For submarine veteran, this DVD will be a real treat to see. For the historians and general public, this is an eye opening video.

Haven't seen the movie yet, but I was just wondering how a review can be made, when the DVD isn't released yet. Huh, Michael? Just curious................

1 out of 5 stars TERRA BULL.......2006-10-14

WARRIORS OF TERRA is pretty terrible. Filmed in a lot of darkness with jerky camera work and annoying fadeouts, the movie tries hard for suspense but ultimately fails miserably. An ecoterrorist group breaks into a facility to release test animals; they are aided by the security guard who is dating the big shot's daughter. They find no animals but when their computer geek opens all the doors, they release a secret genetic experiment---a girl who injects her victims with a poisonous toxin that liquefies their innards and is contagious as well. Seems like the father of the heroine has been trying to cure this girl for ten years---we never know what he's curing her of or who she is. Needless to say, the girl gets out and eats up most of the cast. Edward Furlong, whose career has pretty much gone down hill since his TERMINATOR days is the security guard and he is as bad as the rest of the unknowns cast. Another nail in the coffin of horror movies.

Description

In the late 1950s, a fresh, unconventional style of standup comedy emerged in sharp contrast to the standard "Take my wife, please" approach. It tackled such previously taboo subjects as sex, religion, drugs, and politics, and ushered in an avant-garde era of comedy that was decidedly more cerebral, satirical, and improvisational than before. Practitioners of this new art form included JONATHAN WINTERS, BILL COSBY, BOB NEWHART, SHELLEY BERMAN, and, later, RICHARD PRYOR, GEORGE CARLIN, THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS, STEVE MARTIN, ANDY KAUFMAN, and LILY TOMLIN, just to name a few.

Here are many of the maverick comedians who took those big risks years ago and paved the way for today's current crop of outrageous, in-your-face comics. Many of these rare television performances have not been seen in 30 or 40 years.

2 out of 5 stars "CUTTING EDGE" COMEDIANS NOT CUTTING ENOUGH FOR ME.......2007-06-27

When I read about this DVD on Amazon I thought it would be a great compilation of some of the greatest comedians of yesteryear. Maybe I expected too much from clips that were made in the sixties and seventies, when broadcast regulations bolstered censorship rulings. George Carlin and Richard Pryor in particular, appeared bland and flat.

I guess for me the interesting thing about this DVD was witnessing the transformation some of today's most raucous and rebellious comedians made. Still, overall I was disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Total disappointment.......2007-06-18

Cutting edge comedians, without their cutting edge material. What a letdown... only the safest routines, with completely inane commentary ("One thing is certain. We all like to laugh." How profound.)

Don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Lineup.......2007-04-10

What a fascinating "lineup" spanning decades of standup! Great fun to see some of the early standup work of Newhart, Sahl, Cambridge, etc. And the early-and-later appearances of Carlin and Pryor are nothing short of astonishing. They start as clean-cut, fairly conventional comics in suit and tie, then, when they let their hair down (literally), it's like they've become entirely different people. Never saw a lot of the color appearances with Andy Kaufman and Lily Tomlin. Very cool. Bonus of commercials with comedians is fun, too.

4 out of 5 stars pretty darn good!.......2006-10-04

there's some classics on here. "Drink"(Patrick Smith) is one of my all time favorites. there's also a great one from Mo Willems, as well as several other classics. It is true, however, that a lot of these films are re-runs for Spike, matter of fact, i think they are ALL found on other compilations. but still pretty darn good. nice menus, easy to navigate.

5 out of 5 stars Some classic animated shorts from the 80s to now.......2004-09-03

Cutting Edge Classics is a perfect title for this collection since it showcases material from the last 20 years that either is now or was cutting edge at the time. For those of you who have seen the Maakies cartoons on Saturday Night Live and want to own them, well this DVD has four of them. Adam Elliot who won the Oscar in 2004 for his animated short "Harvie Krumpet" is represented here with "Brother." My favorites on here are "Drink" and "The Snowman" which features some great 3D computer animation. All in all a very nice selection of animated shorts.

1 out of 5 stars no new films, no extras, no digital quality........2004-07-01

Spike and Mike scrape the barrel again to re-release another old collection of rehashed animated shorts on DVD, with minimal extras and unrestored VHS picture and sound quality.

There's very little rhyme or reason as to the selection process behind such a random compilation. Aside from a couple Internet cartoons that you could just watch online for free, everything else here has been previously available on other, superior collections. All I can guess is they had some old film licenses lying around that were close to expiring and they wanted more of your money.

I have to sadly agree with the other reviewers here, that Spike and Mike is truly dead. Pick up the "Animation Show" instead, or if you can still find them, the old out-of-print "Tournee" animation collections.

2 out of 5 stars Give it Another Try.......2004-06-18

When I first wrote my review for this disc, I panned it. Recently, I've given it another go, and I have to say that this isn't such a bad little compilation after all. I still don't have too much interest in the blood-guts-and-butts humor of "An Old Story," "Maakies" or "Cane Toad," but the disc also includes some fascinating work like Patrick Smith's "Drink," Mo Willems' "Iddy Biddy Beat Boy," Pjtor Sapegin's "One Day a Man Bought a House," and Raimund Krumme's "Ropedancers." "Stubble Trouble" is quick and humorous, and with The World's Best Animation DVD out of print, it's nice to see the German film "Balance" available for a new generation of artists.

So, Spike and Mike, I take back some of what I said before. While I still prefer your previous release, "Spike and Mike's Classic Festival of Animation," I appreciate the effort in putting some very unique animations on one very affordable disc. Here's looking forward to an even better compilation in the future!

5 out of 5 stars a GREAT collection!.......2004-04-28

I think the point of this collection is that it collects classic shorts from the past 15 year that were on the cutting edge at the time of their release. That's why they're classics. Looked at that way, there is a ton of great material here. My favorite is Rope Dancers, which is really trippy--almost like what Escher would have done if he had worked in animation. There are plenty of other great clips here, as well. If you're new to animation, this is a great starting point, and if you've scene it all before, then this DVD is a fantastic set of highlights.
