This 1975 film sits near the top of any list of the best films of the 1970s, perhaps in the top five and, in some people's minds, at the pinnacle itself. Robert Altman, at his most Altmanesque, spins together plot strands involving two dozen people over the course of one particularly busy weekend in Music City, USA. Though several of the story lines deal with country-western stars--played by Henry Gibson, Ronee Blakley and Karen Black--the plot also deals with the country scene's wannabes, the business people who pull the strings and the operative for a mysterious presidential candidate who is trying to get the de facto endorsement of some of the country stars by having them appear at a rally for him. (The unknown but rocketing presidential aspirant was eerily echoed the next year, when Jimmy Carter came out of nowhere to win the presidency.) Blakley is heartbreakingly fragile as a Loretta Lynn-like singer on the verge of total mental meltdown, while Lily Tomlin is outstanding as a housewife-gospel singer who has a dalliance with a randy folk-rock cad, perfectly played by Keith Carradine (who won an Oscar for his song "I'm Easy"). The cast also includes Jeff Goldblum, Scott Glenn, Keenan Wynn, Shelley Duvall, Geraldine Chaplin (hilarious as a fatuous British TV journalist), Barbara Harris, Michael Murphy, and Ned Beatty, with cameos by Elliott Gould and Julie Christie as themselves. Next to Mean Streets, perhaps the most influential film of the decade. --Marshall Fine

Twenty years' worth of country superstar Reba McEntire's engaging music videos are included on Reba: Video Gold 1. The first thing that stands out is their consistent production quality. There isn't a single video from, say, the 1980s--an era that left a lot of artists with embarrassing promotional artifacts--in this collection, beginning with the 1986 "Whoever's In New England," which casts McEntire as a stay-at-home wife whose busy husband may be cheating on her during business trips. "Sunday Kind of Love" takes a very different approach, setting its pop ballad in a World War II ballroom while, elsewhere, a wounded husband returns home from the war. Another unexpected setting accompanies McEntire's cover of Don Everly's "Cathy's Clown," in which the song's hard questions about a jilted man are transferred to the Wild West. "Fancy" is the biggest cliché in this anthology, in which Reba plays a big star returning to her rustic roots, while "Is There Life Out There" finds her portraying a beleaguered waitress trying to go to school and be a devoted wife and mother all at once. (Huey Lewis plays her spouse.)"Does He Love You," a duet with Linda Davis, is a fairly tortured story of a man in love with both of the women singing the song. It feels silly, but the whole thing is ultimately played for a laugh. (Rob Reiner, of all people, makes a little cameo appearance.) "Why Haven't I Heard from You" is the most fun video here, a sassy musical set in a Grecian beauty parlor; McEntire's appealing but comically rubber face proves a lot of fun. "If You See Him/If You See Her," a duet with Brooks and Dunn, is a very satisfying performance with a little story that finds Kix Brooks playing a mutual friend to both ex-lovers Ronnie Dunn and McEntire. Things take a sentimental turn toward the end with McEntire's cover of Kenny Rogers' "Sweet Music Man," as well as "What Do You Say" (a maudlin story of a mom dying of cancer) and "He Gets That from Me" (the story of a mother and son getting by after the death of the family patriarch). --Tom Keogh

Nothing encourages one to ignore those silly contradictions in Shania Twain's music (is she country? is she pop?) like a collection of her highly playful videos. The Platinum Collection rolls right over boundaries of tradition and genre with its concentration of imaginative, often surprising visuals. "The Woman in Me," for instance, is set among Egypt's pyramids, while "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" finds a stunning Twain fronting a band of mindless hunks in a funny reversal of Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" video. "You're Still the One," easily one of Twain's most affecting songs, still holds up as a softly erotic short film. Even Twain's more prosaic videos (the go-kart mania of "You Win My Love") bear repeat viewing, but it's her heck-with-it aesthetic that leads to such unexpected sights as Irish step dancing in "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)." Then, of course, there are those hot pants in "Rock This Country!" Long may Shania wave. --Tom KeoghDescription

Nashville Rebel

Great singer, good songwriter, underrated guitar player: Nashville Rebel supplies ample evidence that Waylon Jennings (1937-2003) was one of country music's best. Although the time frame (from 1970 to 1984) of this hour-long, 18-song collection is pretty narrow in the context of his entire career, it's revealing. When Jennings sang "Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line" on Johnny Cash's TV show in '70, he had already recorded at least ten albums (he'd also been in Buddy Holly's backing band, and had famously given up his seat on the plane that crashed with Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson on board) and was still a fairly standard, pompadoured product of the Nashville assembly line. But just four years later, as we see in four songs taken from Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, he'd become the bearded, long-haired outlaw who helped bring country to the rock 'n' roll generation. Notwithstanding some great pedal steel guitar playing by Ralph Mooney, these latter performances are subdued, maybe too much so, but Jennings' charisma and talent are still apparent. Much better are the five previously-unseen tunes from a TV show produced by singer-record producer (and Waylon's brother-in-law) Jack Clement, which include "Lonesome, "On'ry and Mean" and "Amanda" and find Jennings and his band sounding a good deal more lively and committed. And best of all are the last five live tunes, which include Jennings' most popular material, like "Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)," "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys," "Good-Hearted Woman," and "Are You Sure Hank Done it This Way" (the final selections include three videos and two TV commercials). Although Jennings went on to form the Highwaymen with Cash, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson, he never got the crossover acclaim that came to the others. That could be because he wasn't as iconic as Cash, as gregarious as Nelson, or a movie star like Kristofferson; or perhaps it was due to his substance abuse problems. Whatever, Waylon Jennings, a rebel indeed, is well-served by this release. --Sam Graham

Honky Tonk Blues is an expanded director's cut of an American Masters television special about Hank Williams, and every minute of it illuminates Williams's importance as a seminal artist and American archetype. Produced with an understated fascination for the country legend's gifts and demons that shortened his career, played havoc with his marriages, and led to a haunting death at 29, Honky Tonk Blues builds a seamless profile from rare footage and rich interviews with (among others) Rick Bragg, Big Bill Lister (Williams's longtime opening act), Hank Williams Jr., and members of Williams's backup band, the Drifting Cowboys. Williams's story, including his mentorship in the blues by Rufus "Tee Tot" Payne, childhood loneliness, and emergence as a whole-cloth singer-songwriter "who taught people it's okay to bear your soul in everyday language," is thoroughly compelling and resonates with many American originals (e.g., Kurt Cobain) who followed him. An outstanding documentary. --Tom Keogh
