Winner of five Academy Awards including Best Picture, Actor, and Screenplay, Kramer vs. Kramer remains as powerfully moving today as it was when released in 1979, simply because its drama will remain relevant for couples of any generation. Adapted by director Robert Benton from the novel by Avery Corman, this is perhaps the finest, most evenly balanced film ever made about the failure of marriage and the tumultuous shift of parental roles. It begins when Joanna Kramer (Meryl Streep) bluntly informs her husband Ted (Dustin Hoffman) that she's leaving him, just as his advertising career is advancing and demanding most of his waking hours. Self-involvement is just one of the film's underlying themes, along with the search for identity that prompts Joanna to leave Ted with their first-grade son (Justin Henry), who now finds himself living with a workaholic parent he barely knows. Juggling his domestic challenge with professional deadlines, Ted is further pressured when his wife files for custody of their son. This legal battle forms the dramatic spine of the film, but its power is derived from Benton's flawlessly observant script and the superlative performances of his entire cast. Because Benton refuses to assign blame and deals fairly with both sides of a devastating dilemma, the film arrives at equal levels of pain, growth, and integrity under emotionally stressful circumstances. That gives virtually every scene the unmistakable ring of truth--a quality of dramatic honestly that makes Kramer vs. Kramer not merely a classic tearjerker, but one of the finest American dramas of its decade. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Kramer vs. Kramer.......2007-07-04

In 1979, Hoffman hit a career high-point with director Benton's near-flawless marital drama, depicting the dissolution of a marriage with unerring sensitivity. Touching performances from all three leads help bring an insightful script to heart-wrenching life. At Oscar time, "Kramer" won Best Picture, Benton took the honors for both direction and screenplay, and Hoffman got the nod for Best Actor- deservedly.

5 out of 5 stars The trauma of divorce..........2007-04-22

A powerful statement about the trauma of divorce is offered by this winner of five Academy Awards. Dustin Hoffman plays Ted Kramer, a husband and father who, in order to "bring home the bacon" is totally dedicated to his career.

His wife feels neglected, ignored, alone, and forgotten. Meryl Streep plays the wife, Joanna, and delivers an outstanding performance about the young mother, overwhelmed with what she considers a dead end. She decides to leave her husband, son and apartment in search for self-development and growth.

Ted Kramer arrives home, bringing what he thinks will be the best news ever. He has just received a promotion, landing a major advertising account. As he enters, Joanna delivers the news that she is leaving.

As it happens in many situations, we find Ted going from the sublime to the ridicule, from what he thought was the best of news, to hearing his world, as he knows it, is about to end. Ted tries hard to keep some sense of composure for tomorrow he has a major presentation to deliver at work. But... the drastic change in his personal life starts to take its toll.

Dustin Hoffman is superb. The next day scenes during his first attempt at breakfast with his son, Billy, played by Justin Henry, are some of the best movie clips in this movie, for you sense his anger, his pain, his frustration. He wants to be positive to prevent his son from having to live through the trauma of abandonment, but soon finds himself making breakfast, not knowing how, with his son trying to help, only to realize that "Daddy" has no clue as to how to make his favorite, French toast.

Father and son soon begin to adjust to this new life, the father taking on all the responsibilities of his ex-wife, and the child adjusting to a world without Mom, where he actually has to guide his father to the right products to purchase as they grocery shop.

Finally, when these two have regained some sense of composure, and life is beginning to smoothly run for father and son, Joanna returns and now she wants Billy back. Ted refuses to give him up and they go to court to battle... Kramer vs. Kramer... Husband vs. Wife...

While this movie was released in 1979, it is as good a topic today as it was then, and highly recommended for any family confronted with the issues of divorce, irreparable differences, separation, resulting anger, frustration, and pain.

Dustin Hoffman's performance as the father who attempts to do what is right for his son is brilliantly delivered. In all fairness, the movie delivers a powerful message, and that is that in cases of divorce, of a family breaking up, every individual has a certain share of responsibility. We can not blame one person entirely, and in Kramer vs. Kramer we find all parties facing the dilemma of how to proceed with life when the family unit ceases to exist. Without a doubt... this is the trauma of divorce performed to perfection!

5 out of 5 stars Divorce American Style........2006-12-31

Many people fall in love and get married and by instinct the children come. Many planned over what shall come after and are prepared. Many married for love, some for conveniance, but when things go wrong, children are always the victims. They never have faults over what their parents like or dislike.
In this movie we learned that if you wanna change another person, you have to change yourself, because we can never change a person. Some people need to be alone sometimes and it has to be tollerated because the person doesn't belong to us,neither our childrens are ours. They don't come from us,but through us.Somewhere it has to be a compromise, respecting the individual's need because every person is an individual.
Giving a space to another person is also giving a space to ourselves.
This movie was a 'boom' in Europe, one reason is for the stars and characters, another one is because the men lost their homes...!!

5 out of 5 stars This Movie Should Be Called "Therapy Vs Medication".......2006-09-23

In this movie we see Meryl Streep walking out on her 7 year old son and her husband. She does this because she feels "trapped" and "needs to find herself" or any other cliche you can think of. If you got the impression that the 1970's was a time for self absorbtion and introspection you are quite right. So then she wants the kid and after getting him she decides to let the father have him. This is one flakey chick who kind of reminds me of my ex wife who I divorced but I did have enougth sense to retain the Marital Home.I think Kramer's wife is in real need of Therapy and Medication because she can't seem to make up who she is, where she is at ,what she wants or who she loves. I give this movie 5 stars because thankfully Ms. Streep has disappeared from our screens in recent years after we all overdosed on her in the 1980's.

5 out of 5 stars a timeless classic, the stereotyped failed marriage never turned old.......2006-09-21

after watched this movie, you'd know how and why these two actors who played the husband and the wife are such talented performers. one more thing, the kid who played their son was just amazingly wonderful, he should have got an oscar.

I was first introduced to this series on Cartoon Network like, 2 or 3 years ago. It wasn't extremely awesome or had beautiful graphics but there was something about it that I loved. I don't think I ever finished watching the series and they quit airing it so I wasn't too happy about that...I'm so excited and can't wait for it to get here. I know that if my friends watched it they wouldn't like it but it's so awesome to me!

5 out of 5 stars Something for you and your kids.......2007-01-26

Cyborg 009 is a great introduction to the world of anime. The story has a nice way of showing the difference between good and evil. A couple of the stories can also encourage a discussion between you and your kid(s) about why something turned out the way it did or why a particular decision was made. Don't get me wrong, this anime is not aimed at just young kid(s). The story is interesting enough to hook you and a teenager into watching it.

1 out of 5 stars Yawn... heard it before..........2007-04-21

There is nothing new presented in this DVD. It makes the same old straw man argument that critics such as Southerton tried in his "Losing a lost tribe" There are several reasons as to why this is, which I will list accordingly.
1) This DVD, as well as the other critics, seems to take to the idea that the Book of Mormon teaches that all Native Americans are decedents of Israelites. This simply is not true. It is recorded in the Book of Mormon almost as soon as Nephi and his family landed that there were already native peoples living on the American continent. So, if one holds to the view that the Nephites were a minority in a bigger melting pot of genetic ancestry, which is what the latest from FARMS and FAIR is publishing, then this book and the claims therein are flawed. This DVD also conveniently skips over the many Haploid group genes that have been discovered in about 3% of Native Americans. And that this specific Haploid group is found specifically in Israelites. So yes, I agree that not all of the Native Americans were descendants of Lehi. However, if one steps back and looks at the bigger picture, then one will see that indeed there is room and evidence for Semitic origins in a specific and small number of Native Americans.
2) As an amateur student of Mendelian Genetics and Evolution, I must also mention the many factors that can drastically alter the course of a genetic pedigree. One of these factors include having the recessive genes and traits be overwhelmed by dominant traits, which we find is the case with the recessive Israelite Haploid group and the dominant Asian Diploid group. Now, considering that the native Mayans of Mesoamerica - who very likely did come from Asia - assimilated the Lamanites almost as soon as they landed in America and the Nephites later around 500 C.E., we see the possibility of the Haploid group being overwhelmed by the Dominant Diploid Asian group. In other words, the Dominant Asian gene covered the recessive Israelite gene. Some other factors that could very well have had an influence over the Israelite Haploid group was the fact that the genetic structure and "purity" of that particular gene has been drastically reshaped by constant invasion and assimilation from the Mayans to the Europeans. In other words, we are not getting a pure genetic source out of this gene due to continuing intermixing.
3) New evidence has been cropping up in the last decade that indicate not only Semitic influences on Mayan culture and tradition, but Greek and Phonetician influences as well. With the discovery of two tablets in Mesoamerica dating to the second century C.E. - one with Greek written on it, the other Phonetician - we must consider the possibility that several groups of people from the Mediterranean had contact with pre-Columbian civilizations. And with the discovery of a Roman column, made in 2007, in China that dates to the second century B.C., we must consider that not all access to the Far East - even the Americas - was completely unknown to the classical civilizations. So, these new evidences paint a bigger picture that this DVD misses.
I could continue to write a detailed critique of this DVD, but I think that this is enough to persuade the viewer to not waste his/her money on purchasing this DVD and instead look up more fascinating findings being published by FARMS and FAIR. In conclusion, this DVD misses the bigger picture with many flawed conclusions, speculations and outdated scholarship.
And, to calm down those who are screaming "what about old "Joe Smith" saying that the Indians are primarily descended from Lehi?" all I have to say is that Joseph Smith was a prophet, not a scientist. He was still - even though seemingly mistaken - free to make his own speculations and interpretations of the Book of Mormon and the very real people that it speaks of. But one must remember that many of the Old Testament prophets made flawed speculations about the natural world and science, such as Isaiah commenting that the earth is flat with the sun rotating around it - which was a common thought of his age - and many other prophets, kings and priests in Israel assuming that you could control the color of an animal's skin by placing a corresponding colored stick by it's pregnant mother.
And also, Mr. Kramer, give it a rest with trying to use DNA as "proof" that the Book of Mormon is false when the same DNA tactics are being applied to proving that 1) there was no Adam and Eve that spawned the entire human race 2) the earth is billions, not thousands, of years old 3) there is no possibility for a Noahican flood 4) animals, including humans, evolved from lower species. I bet that you ain't talking about that with your congregation. Or, where is your DVD on that subject? I know of heaps of those exact kind of DVD's that make a much more compelling argument than yours.

5 out of 5 stars Active Mormons appreciate and laud this research.......2007-03-22

I am an active Mormon and attend Mormon temples. The research presented in this work does not bother me in the least. It is merely a documentary of what has been known about the subject matter for many, many years. To attack this work is to fly in the face of solid and credible research. I have no relation to the producers whatsoever. But I appreciate what they have done. Nothing presented in this work should come as a surprise to those who are honestly seeking truth by researching Joseph Smith, his works and the early Mormon church. Truth is not afraid of challenge and research.

There is no evidence in any realm of research that demonstrates an advanced, record keeping, coin exchanging, machinery building, steel smelting, chariot/horse riding, Egyptian-Hebrew speaking, blood-descended-of-Israel, hemispheric people in the America's prior to the arrival of the Europeans. Had this been the case Columbus and his crew would have found a very advanced civilization here on this North American continent complete with cities surrounded by defensive stone and earthen walls, roads, buildings of stone, coins, elaborate trade systems, Christian theologies, churches, advanced implements of war, wheat, barley, horses, chariots, records engraved on plates of brass, gold and other alloys and the list goes on. Instead what was found? History can demonstrate the truth of the matter. Columbus found beautiful indigenous peoples with simple customs and rituals dating back thousands of years. Multitudes of languages and dialects that trace their origins to Asiatic language pools. They were all devoid of Christianity because Christ never visited this continent. All of this, including their DNA markers have NOTHING to do with Israel.

There were several publications during the lifetime of Joseph Smith that theorized where the American Indian races came from. One paper written in 1820 theorized the American Indians came from Asia. However a majority of period papers theorized the American Indians were descended of Israel and arrived in the America's after the great disbursement of the tribes. DNA fingerprinting has clearly demonstrated the lack of evidence for a Jewish gene pool in the Americas prior to the arrival of the Europeans. Joseph Smith simply incorporated the wrong theory into his book. It really is this simple. No apologies, no confusing theories, no apostate rhetoric is needed in this case. It's simply a matter of truth.

We, as a church, cannot continue to preach to the indigenous populations of the Americas in this hemisphere that they are blood descended of Israelites in order to grow the church and keep members in the church pews. It's a lie and a cunning proselytizing tool. We, as a church, say we embody the truth. Well, frankly, we need to stop covering everything up and admit some of our major doctrines are false and misguided. The American Indians and Latinos of the Americas are beautiful, Asian descended people. I challenge all Mormon Native Americans and Latinos to research your molecular geneology. Put the Book of Mormon to the test. Do not be afraid to discover where your ancestors came from. There are huge genographic projects happening right now that will help you understand your lineage. It's really about the truth. Once you really begin to hunger for truth will you be able to begin the journey of finding your past and your future.

1 out of 5 stars An Excellent Example of a Christian Double Standard.......2006-10-09

For those people who are not aware of this debate, the Book of Mormon teaches that the Native American Indian populations of North and South America are primarily descendants of families who migrated to these continents from the middle east. It teaches that Native Americans are Israelites. In contrast, some scientists maintain that the Native American people must have migrated here from Asia across a land bridge tens of thousands of years ago.

The main thrust of this video explains how DNA testing has proven that the native people currently living in Eastern Siberia, share a common ancestry with the native people living in North America. The producers and experts in this video maintain that this proves the Book of Mormon is false.

The only problem with this assertion is that the historical record has already told us that the tribes on both sides of the Bering Strait have been freely traversing the strait for many centuries, and have commonly intermarried with each other. Native people from North America have been freely traveling by boat into Siberia for centuries. DNA researchers have basically told us nothing that we don't already know; that the native people in both Siberia and Alaska are closely related. DNA evidence alone does nothing to disprove the Book of Mormon in any way.

DNA evidence can only prove a common ancestry between people. On it's own, it tells us little about migration patterns, or about where people ultimately migrated from.

The elaborate webs these so called scientists weave based on incomplete, or mis-interpreted data is almost laughable if it were not for the large numbers of people who are being deceived by it.

The views expressed in this video also show us just how far many Christians will go in their efforts to disprove Mormonism, even if their efforts attack their own religion. Just as a previous reviewer pointed out; the content of this film relies heavily on the opinion of experts such as Thomas Murphy. Mr Murphy has maintained that DNA evidence also suggests that humans are descended from chimps, that humans are merely a third specie of chimpanzee. Now of course, most Christians would take issue with that kind of "evidence," but they are all too happy to pick and choose the co-called "evidence" which seems to attack the Book of Mormon.

1 out of 5 stars Selective Interpretation of Research.......2006-09-25

It's a fairly interesting film, but manages to skew the research to fit the authors' own agenda. What the authors carefully avoid is the fact that the very DNA research they use to "disprove" the Book of Mormon also indicates that man and the chimpanzee share a commmon ancestor several thousand years back.

Oh, the irony!

1 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2006-02-03

An interesting DVD. There is, however, much evidence which is entirely left out of the report, including possible roots tracing back to earlier "Asiatic" peoples - even before the alleged prophet "Lehi" journeyed across the Atlantic - and other omissions of historical facts and other necessary considerations.

In short, I would not commend this film as an accurate portrayal of the truth. Currently, much evidence points against it. That is not to say that it is not entirely true in its representation - but from an academic point of view, it could be false grounds for coming to a conclusion based on an incomplete investigation. In my own investigation, I trust that truth will be found from its original source.

I am an active Mormon and attend Mormon temples. Much of this review comes from a prior review of mine on another work by the same authors. What is nice about this edition is that it has extra footage included that is not found in the original. This extra footage has some very interesting and crucial subject matter. I'm very happy this second edition was released. The research presented in this work does not bother me in the least. The authors are merely attempting to demonstrate that we have ample, physical evidence for the writings contained in the Bible and absolutely nothing for the Book of Mormon.

Had this been the case Columbus and his crew would have found a very advanced civilization here in the Americas complete with cities, roads, buildings of stones, coins, elaborate trade systems, Christian theologies, churches, advanced implements of war, wheat, barley, horses, chariots and the list goes on. Instead what was found? We all know the history on this. Columbus found beautiful indigenous peoples with customs and rituals dating back thousands of years. Multitudes of languages and dialects that trace their origins to Asiatic language pools. And all of this, including their DNA markers have NOTHING to do with Israel.

Many Mormon defenders, including those at Brigham Young University, support and teach a theory which attempts to explain why we can't find anything in the Americas related to the peoples and races described in the Book of Mormon. The theory, the so-called Small Geography Theory, suggests that the founding populations described in the Book of Mormon were so small and geographically isolated in Meso America that they couldn't have contributed much to the gene pool of Central America nor to the landscape on which they lived. This theory flies squarely in the face of what the Book of Mormon itself teaches. The book teaches that the Americas were hidden from the knowledge of the entire world essentially making the Americas uninhabited by humans prior to the arrival of the people described in the book. We know this is not true. Further, solid research has demonstrated that the ruin sites of Meso America have no tie whatsoever to the Eastern world. The book teaches that the populations in the book were as numerous as the sands of the seas and had cities in numbers that could not easily be counted. This clearly tells me these peoples covered a vast territory in the Americas. It names cities, a river and seas all of which cannot be located anywhere. Is it really honest to distort the teachings of the book to account for the lack of physical evidence? The populations described in the Book of Mormon lived here 1000 years. That's 1000! Yet we can't find so much as a single coin from the elaborate coin system described in the book? On the other hand, the cities, coins and people of the Bible are accounted for not just by science but by texts that date back thousands of years.

I challenge all Mormon Native Americans and Latinos to research your molecular genealogy and the areas in which you live. Study the ruin sites in Central America and understand more about the Olmec, Aztec, Maya and other peoples in your countries. I need to do the same with the indigenous populations of North America. Put the Book of Mormon to the test. Do not be afraid to discover where your ancestors came from. There are huge genographic projects happening right now that will help you understand your lineage. It's really about the truth. Once you really begin to hunger for truth will you be able to begin the journey of finding your past and your future.

4 out of 5 stars Still some refuse to believe.......2006-12-21

Unfortunately Mr. Breivik and Stonestreet are missing the point. There is only one truth and one God. Period.. I am not by any means trying to offend, but your remarks are exactly what lead people astray. The Bible is the only truth.. It is the only book that has stood the test of time for over 2 thousand years. Not Buddha, not the book of mormon, and not the watchtower society. There are aethiest scientist out there that would give their right and left arms if they could prove the Bible a hoax. They never have. It's funny these same aethiest use the Bible as a book of reference because it is always right. Please read 1 John 4:1-4 It will explain the false prophets that will and have come.

    1 out of 5 stars Faith-Promoting Propaganda.......2006-09-25

While the production values are rather good, the film turned out to be an attempt to "disprove" one religion to boost the ego of another. One more example of putting someone else's beliefs in the worst light possible to shore up your own.

    A disappointment.

    [...]

This video shows the research done by mormons who used to be a part of the mormon church. If you study archeology and linquistics, the evidence is apparant that the book of mormon is a religion based on lies. The Living Hope Ministries offers some answers to questions about this issue and shows some of the contradictions between the bible and the book of mormon. Another good video made from the same ministry is DNA vs The Book of Mormon which reveals the true ancestry of Native Americans. Don't just look the other way to avoid the truth...

5 out of 5 stars Abundant proof that there is no factual basis for The Book of Mormon.......2006-08-07

This documentary, produced by the Living Hope Ministries in Brigham City, Utah, remains faithful to its explicit purpose: to determine if the Book of Mormon truly is comparable with the Bible. While the individuals behind the film are Christians, as they readily admit, this is not really an examination of faith per se. What it really tries to do is put both the Book of Mormon and the Bible in context alongside geographical, historical, and scientific facts. To put it in a nutshell, this video succeeds in proving that there a single piece of evidence for the factual basis of the Book of Mormon. It is not an attack on the Mormon faith in and of itself, as faith is by definition unquantifiable, but the implication is about as clear as can be - if the Book of Mormon is riddled with factual errors, it cannot be the inspired word of God.

It is an incontrovertible fact that not a single piece of evidence has been found to substantiate the factual basis of the Book of Mormon. In consultation with a diverse group of geologists, anthropologists, historians, archaeologists, linguists, and other experts, the makers of this documentary walk the viewer through the evidence step by step. There is plenty of evidence to support the historical authenticity of both the Old Testament and the New Testament - non-Biblical sources referring to Biblical figures (including Jesus Christ), ancient manuscripts containing some or all of the various Books of the Bible, verifiable locations of important events, evidence of past cultures in the region during the right times, etc. As one expert succinctly puts it, the Bible is archaeologically sound.

In contrast with the Bible, there is no factual basis for the Book of Mormon. There are no ancient manuscripts pre-dating Joseph Smith's discovery in 1830 of the golden plates (which themselves are not extant for any type of investigation). We are told of three large civilizations in the ancient Americas and written records produced over the course of a thousand years, but there is no evidence that any of these large civilizations existed - no ruins, no skeletal remains, no tools or handcrafts. Where are any of the 30+ major cities the Book of Mormon talks about? Why can't the LDS produce a single map corresponding with anything resembling earth's geography? Why have no sites been discovered containing the slightest bit of evidence for the metallurgical accomplishments spoken of in the Book of Mormon? We are told that the Nephite civilization spoke and wrote in the language of Reformed Egyptian, a language that simply never existed on this earth. Not a single one of the metallic coins reportedly used for over a millennium have been found, nor any sign of metallurgical advancement dating back to that time. Why is there no applicable evidence whatsoever from Cumorah, the site of two intense battles that reportedly left hundreds of thousands of warriors dead? Where are the chariot pieces, steel swords, mass graves, etc.? And what of all those horses the warriors rode into battle hundreds of years before horses were first introduced to the New World by the Europeans?

When you break down some of the most basic "facts" contained in the Book of Mormon, it's obvious that many of them are categorically wrong if not impossible. The book talks about animals and plants that were not in that region; there is no evidence of even the most basic metallurgy, let alone steel swords and golden tablets; there's not even the first arrowhead found at the site of two fierce, large-scale battles. Setting aside religion altogether, it's obvious that the Book of Mormon is simply riddled with factual errors. This stands in contrast to the Holy Bible, which is archaeologically, geographically, and historically sound. Whether or not you are a Christian and follow the teachings of Jesus, you can be assured that the people and places referred to in the Bible actually existed; if you are a Mormon, you have to have blind faith in a "Scripture" that is provably false. The primary purpose of this documentary is to challenge Mormons to take a good, hard look at their faith - and it succeeds admirably in doing just that. Two of the most effective interview subjects are LDS anthropologists who set out to prove that the Book of Mormon was factual and ended up leaving the church after failing to come up with a single piece of evidence.
