Was George Lucas's Star Wars Trilogy, the most anticipated DVD release ever, worth the wait? You bet. It's a must-have for any home theater, looking great, sounding great, and supplemented by generous bonus features.

The Movies

The Star Wars Trilogy had the rare distinction of becoming a cultural phenomenon, a defining event for its generation. On its surface, George Lucas's story is a rollicking and humorous space fantasy that owes debts to more influences than one can count on two hands, but filmgoers became entranced by its basic struggle of good vs. evil "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away," its dazzling special effects, and a mythology of Jedi knights, the Force, and droids. Over the course of three films--A New Hope (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Return of the Jedi (1983)--Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), and the roguish Han Solo (Harrison Ford) join the Rebel alliance in a galactic war against the Empire, the menacing Darth Vader (David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones), and eventually the all-powerful Emperor (Ian McDiarmid). Empire is generally considered the best of the films and Jedi the most uneven, but all three are vastly superior to the more technologically impressive prequels that followed, Episode I, The Phantom Menace (1999) and Episode II, Attack of the Clones (2002).

How Are the Picture and Sound?

In a word, spectacular. Thanks to a new digital transfer, you've never seen C-3PO glow so golden, and Darth Vader's helmet is as black as the Dark Side. And at the climactic scene of A New Hope, see if the Dolby 5.1 EX sound doesn't knock you back in your chair. Other audio options are Dolby 2.0 Surround in English, Spanish, and French. (Sorry, DTS fans, but previous Star Wars DVDs didn't have DTS either.) There have been a few quibbles with the audio on A New Hope, however. A few seconds of Peter Cushing's dialogue ("Then name the system!") are distorted, and the music (but not the sound effects) is reversed in the rear channels. For example, in the final scene, the brass is in the front right channel but the back left channel (from the viewer's perspective), and the strings are in the left front and back right. The result feels like the instruments are crossing through the viewer.

What's Been Changed?
The rumors are true: Lucas made more changes to the films for their DVD debut. Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker) has been added to a scene in Jedi, Ian McDiarmid (the Emperor) replaces Clive Revill with slightly revised lines in Empire, Temuera Morrison has rerecorded Boba Fett's minimal dialogue, and some other small details have been altered. Yes, these changes mean that the Star Wars films are no longer the ones you saw 20 years ago, but these brief changes hardly affect the films, and they do make sense in the overall continuity of the two trilogies. It's not like a digitized Ewan McGregor has replaced Alec Guiness's scenes, and the infamous changes made for the 1997 special-edition versions were much more intrusive (of course, those are in the DVD versions as well).

How Are the Bonus Features?

Toplining is Empire of Dreams: The Story of the Star Wars Trilogy, a 150-minute documentary incorporating not only the usual making-of nuts and bolts but also the political workings of the movie studios and the difficulties Lucas had getting his vision to the screen (for example, after resigning from the Directors' Guild, he lost his first choice for director of Jedi: Steven Spielberg). It's a little adulatory, but it has plenty to interest any fan. The three substantial featurettes are "The Characters of Star Wars" (19 min.), which discusses the development of the characters we all know and love, "The Birth of the Lightsaber" (15 min.), about the creation and evolution of a Jedi's ultimate weapon, and "The Force Is with Them: The Legacy of Star Wars" (15 min.), in which filmmakers such as Peter Jackson, Ridley Scott, and James Cameron talk about how they and the industry were affected by the films and Lucas's technological developments in visual effects, sound, and computer animation.

The bonus features are excellent and along the same lines as those created for The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. Each film has a commentary track, recorded by Lucas, Ben Burtt (sound design), Dennis Muren (visual effects), and Carrie Fisher, with Irvin Kershner joining in on the film he directed, The Empire Strikes Back. Recorded separately and skillfully edited together (with supertitles to identify who is speaking), the tracks lack the energy of group commentaries, but they're enjoyable and informative, with a nice mix of overall vision (Lucas), technical details (Burtt, Muren, Kershner), and actor's perspective (Fisher). Interestingly, they discuss some of the 1997 changes (Mos Eisley creatures, the new Jabba the Hutt scene) but not those made for the DVDs.

There's also a sampler of the Xbox game Star Wars: Battlefront, which lets the player reenact classic film scenarios (blast Ewoks in the battle of Endor!); trailers and TV spots from the films' many releases; and a nine-minute preview of the last film in the series, Episode III, Revenge of the Sith (here identified by an earlier working title, The Return of Darth Vader). Small extra touches include anamorphic widescreen motion menus with dialogue, original poster artwork on the discs, and a whopping 50 chapter stops for each film.

"The Force Is Strong with This One"
The Star Wars Trilogy is an outstanding DVD set that lives up to the anticipation. There will always be resentment that the original versions of the films are not available as well, but George Lucas maintains that these are the versions he always wanted to make. While I Love the remakes as much as the originals, I think my favorite part of this collection is the bonus disk. There are interviews and lots of "making of..." footage where we get to really see them putting together the original "low budget" films. My favorite part was when they were filming the ultimate destruction of the death star and you hear some guy in the background go "boom!"

The "secrets" behind the making serve only to add to my enjoyment, no matter which version I am watching....

Didn't like the prequels for the scene of Darth Vader hearing from the emperor that Amidala is Dead, really bad scene in the Myth of Darth Vader, but the gradually transformation and the motives I'll have to said that there where OK.

For starters I have all the version of Stars Wars and the DVDs what's up with the Jabba the Hutt in the hangar with Han Solo in A New Hope, it look like he was really young and in the Return he was and old guy I don't buy it.

Also the Mr. Jar Jar I just don't like these character, the light sabers effect they didn't do anything to put them better and last but not least the ending of the Return they change Sebastian Shaw for Hayden Christensen this was a cheap shot from the Lucas Camp, but after all is said and done this is a must have collection for two things:

The most important first - the bonus disk (excellent)
The second most important thing is the package - the best in history.

Just a very quick background on me...

Love all of the rrequels but have a few issues with them...*cough*jar jar

I don't understand why all of you hate these movies now. I will admit, some of the changes are unnessassary, but the audio, picture, and continuity is flawless now. Before there was an orange glow underneath the landspeeders and there were English letters on the power control in the Death Star. These films needed to be brought into the 21st Century. The only scene I have a problem with is the music number in Jabba's palace in Return of the Jedi...But it makes up for the idiotic Ewok song that used to be at the end. The movies have NOT CHANGED! They did not change actors, lines, and the Greedo/Han cantina scene was put back to the way it was. The only MAJOR change was the adding of deleted scenes(particularly the interesting scene between Luke and Biggs before the Battle of Yavin) and the adding of Hayden in at the end of Jedi (for those who don't get it: this is what he looked like the last time he was human, before he "died" and became Darth Vader...Sebastian Shaw therefore did not exist as a human, but as a cyborg.) In my opinion, these are bettered versions of the originals. So stop saying that it's not the same thing.

The extended editions of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings present the greatest trilogy in film history in the most ambitious sets in DVD history. In bringing J.R.R. Tolkien's nearly unfilmable work to the screen, Jackson benefited from extraordinary special effects, evocative New Zealand locales, and an exceptionally well-chosen cast, but most of all from his own adaptation with co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, preserving Tolkien's vision and often his very words, but also making logical changes to accommodate the medium of film. While purists complained about these changes and about characters and scenes left out of the films, the almost two additional hours of material in the extended editions (about 11 hours total) help appease them by delving more deeply into Tolkien's music, the characters, and loose ends that enrich the story, such as an explanation of the Faramir-Denethor relationship, and the appearance of the Mouth of Sauron at the gates of Mordor. In addition, the extended editions offer more bridge material between the films, further confirming that the trilogy is really one long film presented in three pieces (which is why it's the greatest trilogy ever--there's no weak link). The scene of Galadriel's gifts to the Fellowship added to the first film proves significant over the course of the story, while the new Faramir scene at the end of the second film helps set up the third and the new Saruman scene at the beginning of the third film helps conclude the plot of the second.

To top it all off, the extended editions offer four discs per film: two for the longer movie, plus four commentary tracks and stupendous DTS 6.1 ES sound; and two for the bonus material, which covers just about everything from script creation to special effects. The argument was that fans would need both versions because the bonus material is completely different, but the features on the theatrical releases are so vastly inferior that the only reason a fan would need them would be if they wanted to watch the shorter versions they saw in theaters (the last of which, The Return of the King, merely won 11 Oscars). The LOTR extended editions without exception have set the DVD standard by providing a richer film experience that pulls the three films together and further embraces Tolkien's world, a reference-quality home theater experience, and generous, intelligent, and engrossing bonus features. --David Horiuchi

There is a reason why these 3 films got Best Picture nominations (and a win) 3 years in a row as well as winning 11 Oscars in its final year. THESE FILMS ARE AMAZING. Return of the King is the best followed by Fellowship and then Two Towers, but all get 5 stars, placing it as one of the best films ever made. The extended scenes are not really useful but some (like Saruman in "King") are good. The special features makes paying the extra price worth it. Excellent films

Only one film under his belt, and already Flynn Carsen (Noah Wylie) is talking like Indiana Jones. Carsen, for those just tuning in, is a librarian at the Metropolitan Library, which secretly houses history's mythic artifacts, including the sword Excalibur, and the Shroud of Turin. The fate of the world is once again in Carsen's hands when a map to the legendary King Solomon's Mines is stolen. Carsen embarks on another fantastic global adventure, with stops in Casablanca (with inevitable references to the Humphrey Bogart classic) and Kenya. This time, he has new female companionship, Emily (Gabrielle Anwar), a beautiful archaeologist who can match the much-educated Carsen degree for degree. Reprising their roles from the first film are Olympia Dukakis as Flynn's meddling mother, who tries to fix him up with his third cousin ("You'll have plenty to talk about"), Jane Curtin as flinty library administrator, Charlene ("Save your receipts"), and Bob Newhart as his mentor, Judson. Savvy viewers will see plot twists and character revelations coming from a mile away, but that is all part of the fun, as are the hokey special effects and knowing humor ("There's always a secret passage," Carsen observes while navigating a catacomb). Who know if there will ever be another Indiana Jones movie. Until then, The Librarian is worth checking out, especially on DVD, where it can be enjoyed without intrusive commercial interruption. --Donald Liebenson

I love this movie, I have the first one too. I saw them on TNT, and I was so glad when they put them on DVD. I had my Dad watch them, and he loved them too, they are just too funny. And who hates Noah Wyle. :)

The greatest trilogy in film history, presented in the most ambitious sets in DVD history, comes to a grand conclusion with the extended edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Not only is the third and final installment of Peter Jackson's adaptation of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien the longest of the three, but a full 50 minutes of new material pushes the running time to a whopping 4 hours and 10 minutes. The new scenes are welcome, and the bonus features maintain the high bar set by the first two films, The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers.

What's New?

One of the scenes cut from the theatrical release but included here, the resolution of the Saruman storyline, generated a lot of publicity when the movie opened, as actor Christopher Lee complained in the press about losing his only appearance. It's an excellent scene, one Jackson calls "pure Tolkien," and provides better context for Pippin to find the wizard's palantir in the water, but it's not critical to the film. In fact, "valuable but not critical" might sum up the ROTK extended edition. It's evident that Jackson made the right cuts for the theatrical run, but the extra material provides depth and ties up a number of loose ends, and for those sorry to see the trilogy end (and who isn't?) it's a welcome chance to spend another hour in Middle-earth. Some choice moments are Gandalf's (Ian McKellen) confrontation with the Witch King (we find out what happened to the wizard's staff), the chilling Mouth of Sauron at the gates of Mordor, and Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) being mistaken for Orc soldiers. We get to see more of Éowyn (Miranda Otto), both with Aragorn and on the battlefield, even fighting the hideously deformed Orc lieutenant, Gothmog. We also see her in one of the most anticipated new scenes, the Houses of Healing after the battle of the Pelennor Fields. It doesn't present Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) as a savior as the book did, but it shows the initial meeting between Éowyn and Faramir (David Wenham), a relationship that received only a meaningful glance in the theatrical cut.

If you want to completely immerse yourself in Peter Jackson's marvelous and massive achievement, only the extended edition will do.

And for those who complained, no, there are no new endings, not even the scouring of the Shire, which many fans were hoping to see. Nor is there a scene of Denethor (John Noble) with the palantir, which would have better explained both his foresight and his madness. As Jackson notes, when cuts are made, the secondary characters are the first to go, so there is a new scene of Aragorn finding the palantir in Denethor's robes. Another big difference is Aragorn's confrontation with the King of the Dead. In the theatrical version, we didn't know whether the King had accepted Aragorn's offer when the pirate ships pulled into the harbor; here Jackson assumes that viewers have already experienced that tension, and instead has the army of the dead join the battle in an earlier scene (an extended cameo for Jackson). One can debate which is more effective, but that's why the film is available in both versions. If you feel like watching the relatively shorter version you saw in the theaters, you can. If you want to completely immerse yourself in Peter Jackson's marvelous and massive achievement, only the extended edition will do.

How Are the Bonus Features?

To complete the experience, The Return of the King provides the same sprawling set of features as the previous extended editions: four commentary tracks, sharp picture and thrilling sound, and two discs of excellent documentary material far superior to the recycled material in the theatrical edition. Those who have listened to the seven hours of commentary for the first two extended editions may wonder if they need to hear more, but there was no commentary for the earlier ROTK DVD, so it's still entertaining to hear Jackson break down the film (he says the beacon scene is one of his favorites), discuss differences from the book, point out cameos, and poke fun at himself and the extended-edition concept ("So this is the complete full strangulation, never seen before, here exclusively on DVD!"). The documentaries (some lasting 30 minutes or longer) are of their usual outstanding quality, and there's a riveting storyboard/animatic sequence of the climactic scene, which includes a one-on-one battle between Aragorn and Sauron.

This is the best option to have the Lord of The Rings. Maybe it looks simple outside, but is luxurious inside, very complete, very nice design in everything.
It has Spanish subtitles, and includes an interactive map of the Middle Earth or at least the part of the jorney covered in this DVD.

The Best of the Three.......2007-05-13

Clearly the BEST movie of the three in the series. I had originally purchased the extended version sets together and, like an idiot sent one of the appendices to Netflix by accident. The appendices were so good and contained so much information about the making of the movie that I was pretty distraught about it. Netflix sent me a credit of twenty dollars, so I purchased this single set to make mine whole again. I would have done the same thing if I had not received any credit, it (the movie) is that good.

the ring trilogy is the ultimate battle between good and evil...and the same struggle within, that we all must face...
...some have criticized these films for not measuring up to the written novels...well i would have to agree with them, but i think it is unfair to "compare something to itself"...they give it like one star?
i mean, come on now...if these same people had not read the books, they would not have been let down...that is only because the books are just too damn good, no movie could ever measure up to them.
...i read these books in middle school in the 80's...loved all of them...the movies do a great job bringing the books to life...the only thing they need to do now is make one more movie out of the first book, "The Hobbit"...they only touched on it for a second or two in the films.
these 3 are my favorite movies of all time.
there's only one thing that sucks about that:
it takes me a whole day to watch all 3...it is hard to find the time.

The 2006 limited-edition two-disc release of Return of the Jedi is not only the first time the movie has been officially available by itself on DVD. It marks the first-ever DVD release of Jedi as it originally played in theaters in 1983. What does that mean exactly? The film is without the various "improvements" and enhancements George Lucas added for the theatrical rerelease in 1997 as well as the DVD premiere in 2004. So Sebastian Shaw reclaims his spot as the man behind Darth Vader's mask, and we don't see the otherworldly celebration (including the Gungans) at the end of the movie.

What do you lose by watching the 1983 version? Dolby Digital 5.1 EX sound, for one thing (only 2.0 Surround here), and digital cleanup. But for home-theater owners, the biggest frustration will be from the non-anamorphic picture. On a widescreen TV, an anamorphically enhanced (16x9) picture at a 2.35:1 aspect ratio will fill the screen with the exception of small black bars on the top and bottom. The original edition of Jedi, however, on a widescreen TV will have large black bars on the top, the bottom, and the sides unless you stretch the picture (and distort it in the process, especially considering the substandard picture quality). If you're watching on a standard square-shaped (4:3) TV, though, you won't notice a difference.

Yes, it's true that serious home-theater lovers who want spectacular sound and anamorphically enhanced picture can always watch the 2004 version of the movie also included in this set. But chances are good that they already picked up the trilogy edition of all three films, so their decision to buy the 2006 two-disc edition depends on how much they want the original film. The official LucasFilm stance is that this is an individual release of the 2004 version of Return of the Jedi, and the 1983 version of the film is merely a "bonus feature." Common speculation is that the only reason the original versions are seeing the official light of day at all is to undercut the booming black market for the laserdisc version. Star Wars fans will have to decide for themselves if that's worth the purchase. --David Horiuchi

I watched all the remakes of the trilogies and i can honestly say they did more taint then to improve.. The CGI effects look like a cartoonish fake texture.. THe original special effects do stand the test of time in my opinion and look more authentic then the CGI. the CGI mixed in with the hand made models they used in the trilogies look off.. Anybody with a keen eye can see the differences.. As far as return of the Jedi goes, not much notible CGI aside from the celebration scene but, the main notable scene which i think is completely stupid is redoing annikan's ghost as the young prequal annikan then the middle age annikan as in the original star wars.. What doesnt make sense is why Obi is old and annikan is young as a ghost.. I think if they kept it as it was in the originals of annikan being middle aged, people would have just assumed that it was him at his current age had his physical body not been in that deteriorated state when he was in the Darth vader outfit..

I agree with any of a number of previous reviewers: Would somebody PLEASE take STAR WARS away from George Lucas before he ruins it completely?

Like Francis Ford Coppola, who messed with THE GODFATHER trilogy over and over again trying to "perfect" it, Lucas keeps coming back to the original STAR WARS trilogy and adding enhanced effects and formerly deleted scenes.

In what is now known as STAR WARS EPISODE VI: THE RETURN OF THE JEDI, (let me catch my breath a minute, please), Lucas decided to "enhance" the film by inserting extra scenes and dialogue. Lucas decided to make the battle scene explosions more "dramatic," do a score of other little tweaks, and clean up the print.

Lucas has done this so many times over the past three decades that it's now impossible to figure out which film is the "real" THE RETURN OF THE JEDI. Of all the questionable "improvements" he's made, cleaning up the print is the only worthwhile effort. Most of the added scenes and lines add nothing to the film, and some of the changes actually degrade the movie. At the very end, Lucas chose to insert a whole sequence of CGI planetary capitals celebrating the fall of the Galactic Empire, an artificial-looking addition that was hardly worth the effort. Far more annoying is the eleventh hour closing scene replacement of the spirit of Anakin Skywalker (originally David Prowse) with the twentysomething Hayden Christensen, who played Anakin in Episodes II and III. Standing next to the glowing green Yoda and the elder Obi-Wan (Sir Alec Guinness), Christensen's Anakin looks like a Yuppie punk wrapped in a bedsheet.

Fortunately, this two-disc set contains the original theatrical release with all the nicks and imperfections it was born with. The print's a bit dim, and the special effects are showing their limitations after twenty-four years, but this is THE RETURN OF THE JEDI that will remain THE RETURN OF THE JEDI. It is what it is, and it never needed changes. Given the immense amount of material that has grown up around STAR WARS since it was first released, Lucas would have been smarter to release one or the other or both versions as he did, but added an Extras disc with all kinds of "The Making Of.." and "The Legacy Of..." goodies. I was disappointed that this isn't that set.

I was twenty-three when THE RETURN OF THE JEDI debuted in 1983, a full six years after STAR WARS. It was a long time to wait for the cycle to end, and the rumors of a second trilogy (and a possible third trilogy) went unanswered for an unconscionably long time.

I never became a "Jedihead" (the original tag for the STAR WARS version of a Trekkie), but THE RETURN OF THE JEDI, while not as good as THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, was an eagerly awaited coda to the tale.

The STAR WARS films are not CITIZEN KANE IN OUTER SPACE. Overall, they are not "great" films, but they are true "classics." THE RETURN OF THE JEDI is a crucial part of the cycle, and does entertain and excite, all the true bases of success and the core of meaningfulness for any story.

The STAR WARS universe is clearly derivative. THE LORD OF THE RINGS has a "Dark Lord" and a RETURN OF THE KING. STAR WARS has a "Dark Lord of the Sith" and a RETURN OF THE JEDI. Lightsabers are yet another nod to the film's Sword & Sorcery roots. STAR WARS' "Corellians" appear in Isaac Asimov's FOUNDATION as "Korellians", and "Han Solo" is also there as "Hari Seldon." The space war elements are a mishmash of STAR TREK, FORBIDDEN PLANET, AMAZING STORIES, pulp fiction, and a hundred other sources. George Lucas was able to take these well-used pieces and combine them into something that is both very original and yet archetypal.

THE RETURN OF THE JEDI closes the sci-fi retelling of the Mythos of the young Hero. Having faced his demons in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and suffered traumatic, life-altering injury and loss as well as the acquisition of his unique Secret Knowledge, Luke Skywalker has grown into a powerful Jedi. By the time of THE RETURN OF THE JEDI it is becoming clear that Luke has transcended the seductions of the Dark Side, and is now using his powers for unselfish purposes, including perhaps most profoundly, the redemption of his own father, Darth Vader.

Nevertheless, one challenge remains. When Vader discovers Leia's existence, he declares Luke a supernumerary and decides to turn Leia to the Dark Side. The ensuing lightsaber battle between Vader and Luke for Leia's soul is the most profound and most critical moment in the entire sextology. Luke's positive urge to protect his sister meshes with the negative rage he feels at his father's betrayal. Luke Skywalker never comes closer to the Dark Side than at that moment when he maims his father and has the defeated, clearly weakened Vader at his feet. His decision to toss away his lightsaber and renounce the Dark Side at that moment is not only the key to his own salvation but to that of his father, who is then called upon to act on behalf of all that is good, and does. In doing so, father and son together redeem their entire universe.

While not as complex as THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, THE RETURN OF THE JEDI is a far more sophisticated story than the straight-ahead A NEW HOPE. It brings Lucas' modern myth of the Hero to the only close that it could have. Thank heaven that THE RETURN OF THE JEDI even survives Lucas's post-theatrical obsessive-compulsive changes to remain a modern classic.

You don't fool with Mother Nature, spit into the wind, remake Casablanca, or trash the land of Oz. Perhaps that is why the 1985 live-action sequel split critics and audiences alike. A new set of friends, including a tin soldier, a talking chicken, and a pumpkin man, help her against new villains, including Princess Mombi (Jean Marsh)--complete with a set of detachable heads--and the evil Nome King (Nicol Williamson with a great assist from Will Vinton's Claymation). The sole directorial effort of Oscar-winning editor Walter Murch is stuffed with marvelous effects that foreshadow later works by Tim Burton and the Henson non-Muppet films. --Doug Thomas

I checked this out at the library and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The dated special effects give it a more gothic feel than the original, and the director's interpretation of the characters is messed up. All in all, worth seeing a few times, but nothing to write home about.

When Return To Oz came out in 1985 I was excited as I am an Oz fan and enjoy the Oz books. I was wondering how they would combine the two Oz Books, Ozma of Oz and The Land of Oz and I have to say at the time I was pleased and saw the film several times. That was years ago and now I see the movie a bit more critically. Many who have read the books and seen the film say it is closer to Baum and yes in parts it is. I love every moment Dorothy is in Oz. Tik-tok, Jack Pumpkinhead, and Billina all come to life and are fun to see. Dorothy saves the day and manages to fight the Nome King by just being the strong little girl she is. If this film just took place in Oz it would be perfect, well almost perfect. To my mind the director made a mistake not having the scarecrow and Tin woodman through out the film. Few people knew about TikTok and Jack Pumpkinhead and just assumed they were rip offs of the Scarecrow and Tinwoodman. A continual presence in the film would have helped. Then there is the beginining of the film and it is a nightmare. Why would Aunt Em send Dorothy in for shock treatment? Did she really feel she was sick? To make a long story short they could have made a better introduction for a very good film which would have been much more appealing due to the changes. If this movie were a sandwich I would say the meat or center is good but the bread needs work. Still I enjoy it even today and feel it could have done better.

I first saw this movie as a child, age 8, and ever since I have loved this movie, for the most important fact that it is a darker, and more interesting, adaptation of the Oz story. The dark side of this movie may scare children, as it did myself, but it is not overwhelming or too extreme. In fact, this movie strikes a fine and perfect balance on the darker elements, so that a typical child, over the age of 6 or so, will be scared in a good way. This is because the darker sides of this film are represented by things that children really should watch out for in real life, such as stranger adults, and the temptations to wander to far off from home. The characters are unique and original, and the set designs are a visual treat. This movie is a must see for people who want more substance than the overrated sappy 'The Wizard of Oz' movie with the pathetically timid Judy Garland. In this movie, Fairuza Balk plays a much stronger and compelling Dorothy, who we can respect and believe in. Overall, this movie is far better than any other Oz movie in terms of its dedication to the original books.

Bob Rueland (David Duchovny) and Grace Briggs (Minnie Driver) have very little in common. Granted, they both live in Chicago and they're both a bit lovelorn, but that's about it. Still, fate has something in mind for these two somewhat-depressed souls (a construction worker and budding artist, respectively), who've both recently had brushes with death--he's a recent widower, she's just recovered from a heart transplant--and are a little more serious than their friends and relatives. After a series of misbegotten blind dates and almost-meetings, though, these two finally get together, and find that they fit seamlessly with each other. Despite their differences, they have a lot in common--in fact, quite a lot. It seems that the heart that now beats inside Grace's chest once belonged to Bob's wife (Joely Richardson), who died in a car crash. Coincidence? We think not.

A gentle, pleasing romantic comedy, Return to Me marks the directorial debut of Bonnie Hunt, an acclaimed actress known most famously for her role as Renee Zellweger's sister in Jerry Maguire. A shining, happy bright spot in whatever role she's in, Hunt has also invested the film with her trademark brand of humor: dry but sincere, sarcastic but not caustic, and with a deep current of humanity and romance. In the midst of all the permutations that fate surrounds them with, Driver and Duchovny make a pleasantly low-key couple; the triumph of the film is that despite all the contrived angst, the romance is never overly saccharine. They provide a quiet center in a film that has a fair amount of chaos in it, particularly due to Driver's extended family of Irish and Italian relatives (which occasionally tips the film into cutesy territory) and most hilariously to Driver's best friend, played by director Hunt . As a harried mother with innumerable kids and a likable oaf of a husband (James Belushi), Hunt again steals scenes effortlessly; Belushi is a comic revelation, better than he's been in years. I admit it I am a fan of both (actually several) stars of this movie. After Minnie Driver's new show on FX the Riches, reminded me how much I liked her, I got to remembering this film, then coincidentally it was showing on broadcast TV the other day when I came home from work and my wife was watching it and told me to order it, so I did, and we watched it with our youngest who also enjoyed it very much.

But this is a very sweet and touching tale with an interesting twist that is strong on a not too subtle metaphor.
Watch this with your sweetheart for a romantic night at home.

From an absurd plot - Chicago architect Duchovny falls in love with the much younger woman who (unknown to him) has received the transplanted heart of his dead wife - first time director Bonnie Hunt (who also has a good role in the movie) has crafted a very good romantic comedy. Minnie Driver, in particular, as the virginal Grace (this is a very catholic movie) has never been better as the object of Duchovny's chaste affection. The main question of the movie is how Duchovny will react when he learns about Grace's history - and how that will affect their relationship. The film is also a paean to a particular milieu - working class ethnic America, particularly the Italian, Polish and Irish groups that intersect in Chicago - that is fast disappearing as a result of assimilation.

Tolkien's classic The Lord of the Rings, but this robust adaptation maintains reverent allegiance to Tolkien's creation, instantly qualifying as one of the greatest fantasy films ever made. At 178 minutes, it's long enough to establish the myriad inhabitants of Middle-earth, the legendary Rings of Power, and the fellowship of hobbits, elves, dwarves, and humans--led by the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and the brave hobbit Frodo (Elijah Wood)--who must battle terrifying forces of evil on their perilous journey to destroy the One Ring in the land of Mordor. Superbly paced, the film is both epic and intimate, offering astonishing special effects and production design while emphasizing the emotional intensity of Frodo's adventure, and ends on a perfect note of heroic loyalty and rich anticipation.

After the breaking of the Fellowship, Frodo and Sam journey to Mordor with the creature Gollum as their guide in The Two Towers. Meanwhile, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) join in the defense of the people of Rohan, who are the first target in the eradication of the race of Men by the renegade wizard Saruman (Christopher Lee) and the dark lord Sauron. Fantastic creatures, astounding visual effects, and a climactic battle at the fortress of Helm's Deep make The Two Towers a worthy successor to The Fellowship of the Ring, grander in scale but retaining the story's emotional intimacy.

With The Return of the King, the greatest fantasy epic in film history draws to a grand and glorious conclusion. The trilogy could never fully satisfy those who remain exclusively loyal to Tolkien's expansive literature, but as a showcase for physical and technical craftsmanship it is unsurpassed in pure scale and ambition, setting milestone after cinematic milestone as Frodo and Sam continue their mission to Mordor to destroy the soul-corrupting One Ring. While the heir to the kingdom of Men, Aragorn, endures the massive battle at Minas Tirith with the allegiance of Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf, Frodo and Sam must survive the schizoid deceptions of Gollum, who remains utterly convincing as a hybrid of performance (by Andy Serkis) and subtly nuanced computer animation. Jackson and cowriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have much ground to cover; that they do so with intense pacing and epic sweep is impressive enough, but by investing greater depth and consequence in the actions of fellow hobbits Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd), they ensure that The Return of the King maintains the trilogy's emphasis on intimate fellowship and remains faithful to Tolkien's overall vision. Purchased b/c it was a great deal! And had never seen them. NOT as good as Harry Potter thought. I think they are a bit dragged out, but really good stories. Lots of fighting and blood....I could do w/o half of it.

This is a excellent trilogy set of The Lord Of The Rings! Peter Jackson did a outstanding job of making these 3 films. Wish I could give it more stars than 5, because it keeps you excited and wanting more!

I recently hooked up my home entertainment sytem, and started puchasing my favorite movies. I have collected quite a few so far, and i must say that this trilogy is by far the best sounding i have come across. You can definetly see that a lot of attention was paid to detail.
