Editorial Review:

Recasting history as a particularly lavish soap opera, Victoria and Albert sets the story of the relationship between the queen and her consort against a background of family strife and political wrangling. Sticklers for accuracy might be disappointed, but the strong cast and lavish production values make for an entertaining film.

Victoria is barely 18 when her uncle King William IV dies. She is introduced by the family adviser to a young German prince called Albert, and in spite of their initial indifference to one another and a great deal of political opposition, they fall in love. Marriage brings its own problems, however, and as Victoria, grows from an inexperienced young woman into a shrewd and powerful monarch Albert struggles to find a role for himself in both the family and the nation.

The relationship between Victoria and Albert was a remarkable one and this film, while occasionally erring on the side of sentiment, brings that relationship to life. The young leads are charming, but it is the supporting cast of British acting stalwarts--including Nigel Hawthorne, David Suchet, and Diana Rigg--who make Victoria and Albert truly worth watching. --Simon Leake

Movie adaptations of Jane Austen's classic novels were all the rage (relatively speaking) in the mid-1990s. Clueless updated Austen's Emma, which was more conventionally adapted in another version (Emma) starring Gwyneth Paltrow. Emma was produced yet again, this time for British television, as were a celebrated miniseries of Pride and Prejudice and this splendid film of Austen's Persuasion. Persuasion is the story of a love that survives eight years of dormancy and the frustrating obstacles of class prejudice in 19th century England. Anne (Amanda Root) is captivated when she meets the dignified naval officer Capt. Wentworth (Ciarán Hinds), but she is advised to discourage his romantic overtures because he has no fortune. They meet again eight years later, but now Capt. Wentworth has become wealthy while Anne's father is in reduced circumstances in the wake of reckless extravagance. A series of circumstances ensue which prevent Anne and Wentworth from expressing their mutual and inevitable love. The film's success depends entirely on the subtle, superb performances of Root and Hinds. The film builds slowly, occasionally leaving you wondering if anything at all is going to happen. When it does, you realize how carefully crafted a film this is, and the final result is grandly rewarding. --Jeff Shannon

Ripe, Fulfilling Romantic Classic

Anne Elliot and Frederick Wentworth's romance came to a sudden halt in 1806. Anne, the daughter of a conceited and spendthrift baronet, loved Wentworth but was advised by her family's confidant, Lady Russell, that the match was inappropriate, as Wentworth had no connections or money. Now 8 years later, Anne's family is forced from their estate because of her father's mounting financial debts. The family retreats to Bath, where, to the delight of Anne's father, they can maintain their privileged lifestyle on a much smaller budget. The family's home, Kellynch Hall, is to be let by an Admiral and his wife, who, coincidentally, are related to Wentworth. This liaison throws Anne back into the society of Wentworth, now a Captain in the Royal Navy who amassed quite a fortune in privateering. The Captain has now caught the attention of Louisa Musgrove, whose brother married Anne's sister, Mary. Meanwhile Anne, now in her late 20's and showing signs of physical and emotional stress, is surprisingly courted by the heir to Kellynch Hall. The question remains as to whether Anne and the Captain can reconcile to the point of being friends, or perhaps even put aside their past afflictions and possibly rekindle their lost romance.

No one can weave a romantic tale like Jane Austen did in her prime. This movie is a wonderful afternoon retreat. The acting is superb, and the dialogue gives us many wonderful moments to ponder long after the DVD is finished. Fans of period pieces will NOT be disappointed. This one is not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars One of my top ten most romantic movies ever made!.......2007-06-22

This less-than-2-hour movie aired on PBS with a great intro by host Russell Baker. I still enjoy that VHS tape I made at the time, but its colors are dark and sometimes the dialog is hard to understand. Not having it on dvd is NOT an option for me. Luckily, it had been over a year since I last viewed this one, and it was better than ever, even better than the 1st time I saw it. Sometimes I see Captain Wentworth as mildly retarded, that he cannot see that Anne obviously has feelings for him. Then I remember he was thoroughly snubbed by her family as well as refused by her, so his hesitancy is understandable. In the 8 years that have elapsed since refusing him, Anne has found herself & her own voice, & is finally able to tell her well-meaning but patronizing friend, "That is not a thing that I want!" I am always so proud of her for going after what she does want, finally. The last few minutes of the film are some of the most romantic ever made.

My top ten: Pride & Prejudice (mini series with Colin Firth), 2)Persuasion, 3)Room With a View, 4)Casablanca, 5)Emma (Kate Beckinsale version), 6)My Foolish Heart, 7)The Terminator, 8)Doctor Zhivago ('65 version), 9)Best Years of Our Lives, 10)Will Penny. Ok, those last 5 shift around a bit sometimes, depending on which old movies I come across. Some of the traditionally favorite ones like GWTW, or Love Story -- there's more anguish than romance there, to me. What are your favorites? Always on the lookout for romantic moments on film. Hey, that could be another top ten, of your Top Ten Romantic Moments on film, which could be altogether a different list!

3 out of 5 stars Not Persuaded by the film.......2007-05-30

Glad I read the book before watching the film. There were scenes from the book that could have been included to make the film story line flow better. The actors/actresses were not as believable and didn't seem to fit the descriptions in the book as well. This adaptation of "Persuasion" was not as good as Ang Lee's "Sense and Sensibility" (with Emma Thompson) nor Andrew Davies' "Pride and Prejudice" (with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle).
If you're not keen on owning this DVD, I'd borrow it from the local library, a friend, or NetFlix before spending money to buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Didn't like at first .. but then I did........2007-05-04

I am a big Austin fan and have seen just about all of her movie adaptatons. At first I found this movie slow and pointless but about 1/2 way through I got excited to see how it would end. The ending makes good sense but could have been more detailed. The movie builds up antisipation and then ends ubruptly and leaves you saying what just happened. All and all this movie is worth seeing if you enjoy other Austin movies.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent film!.......2007-04-26

This is one of my favorite movies. I saw it at the theater when it first came out and then I bought the book. The characters seem like real people that a person could meet.

Arnold Schwarzenegger works the crowds, plots strategies for defeating multiple opponents, shares his parents' values with the press, and inspires legions of admirers with his resolute optimism about the future. And all of this long before he decided to run for governor of California, in 1977's hit documentary, Pumping Iron. Larger than life, though not necessarily larger than his rivals for the Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia bodybuilding titles (especially a young Lou Ferrigno, hot on Arnold's competitive trail but much less interesting), Schwarzenegger still comes across, at age 28, as a consummate politician, smart, likable, and crafty about exploiting others' psychological weaknesses. The film still feels redundant (there's only so much beefcake the human eye will tolerate), but the emotional dramas--the unrewarded hard work, the unanswered hopes--are compelling. Complete with a revealing 2003 interview with Schwarzenegger and a reunion of the film's bodybuilders and director. --Tom Keogh

It launched one man's multi-million dollar career and changed the world of bodybuilding and physical exercise forever: PUMPING IRON. 5 out of 5 stars Ripple (Ripped) Effects.......2007-06-12

Now thirty years after it was released, 'Pumping Iron,' a breakthrough documentary, has changed much in our culture with ripple effects that are still pumping through today. Seeming an obscure project, the film put bodybuilding on the map and made it respectable. The format of the film is used in documentaries and "reality tv" even today. The focal point is the Mr. Olympia title, the pinnacle achievement for male bodybuilders, but the drama captures Arnold Schwarzenegger just before he plans retirement. Add to that a rising rival in Lou Ferringo, and you have yourself a contest. Interviewing the participants and unveiling their motivations and thoughts gives the whole presentation more meat and development. 'Pumping Iron' made bodybuilding into a mainstream and formidable franchise.

Featuring grueling training sessions, and the indespensible interviews by key players, the whole spectacle has much more meaning. Knowing that mental aspects are crucial to success in sports, Schwarzenegger proves that it is no less removed from bodybuilding than from any other sport. Seeing supporting roles by dedicated players like Mike Katz gives the whole enterprise a greater scope and respectability. (It is doubtful that the repurcussions of health clubs, and, Arnold's reign at the box office and over a state described as the "fifth largest world economy" would be possible--to name but a few influencial developments.)

'Pumping Iron' is still a motivation powerhouse, especially seeing all the primitive equipment the contestants used; all of which has significantly improved much since then.

5 out of 5 stars The movie that changed it all.........2007-05-24

I just saw this DVD twice this weekend. I saw pumping iron when I was little and remember clips but not much. I bought this video last week and I love it. All the extras were great. Interview with Arnold and his bio and the hours of footage that didn't make it into the movie. Questions that people have been asking for years about Arnold and that time frame were answered by arnold himself. The movie showed how they trained then. how the body building world was back then. Arnold in his prime and Lou Ferrigno in his younger days. They even had a reunion with some of the old bodybuilders from the movie which was great. I can't recommed this movie enough for all who are into body building. plus watching this movie gives me great motivation to keep going at it in the gym. While i know i will never get as big as this guys ( not like I want to.) but it still inspires me...

5 out of 5 stars Pumping Iron Redux.......2007-05-13

This is a great second version of Pumping Iron because of the comments and interviews with Governor Arnold at the end of the movie. Great for those who have followed the bodybuilding scene since the '60's.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie!.......2007-05-08

Being an avid weightlifter and hearing great things about this movie, I decided to purchase it here on Amazon. I thought the movie was great and it really went behind the scenes of the whole bodybuilding scene. Overall, I thought the movie is great, and without a doubt in the Top 5 for bodybuilding movies. It was cool to see how competitive these athletes were, and to see the turmoil between Arnold and Ferrigno. However, beware, the movie was made in the 70's so it will take you back a bit into how bodybuilding was back in the day. The clothes, music, and gyms were definitely some of the highlights in the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Good Documentary on Body Building Competitions.......2007-04-24

No dazzling special effects or advanced story plot here. Just a good look into the training/competing aspects of body building.

Its cool to see Arnold before he was a huge movie star and see some of the old-time body builders with him. To me, he was not the star of the show. I really liked Lou Ferrigno is this documentary. It was good to see a few "nice guys" in the sport and to see the real bond between him and his father.

Its funny though. All the bad reviews refer to Arnold as "Governor". Seems like some people let their political views cloud all parts of their life(including how they view films that were made 30 yrs ago!). Get a life, you extremist hacks.

It's always a small surprise to revisit this movie and realize what a subtly dark performance James Stewart gives as an alcoholic who claims he keeps company with a six-foot-tall, invisible rabbit. As Elwood P. Dowd, the actor emits a faint whiff of decay and spirits, yet Stewart also embraces Dowd's romanticism and grace with splendid ease. Based on a hit play and directed by Henry Koster, the film is terribly funny at times, especially whenever Elwood decides it's only polite to introduce Harvey to complete strangers. The supporting cast can't be beat. --Tom Keogh

Oh Hollywood, Why? This movie was originally a stage play. The original script was changed enormously by these film makers. I cannot fathom why, as I think the play script is much better. 3 stars for this movie, 5 for the original play.

5 out of 5 stars big bunny.......2007-05-13

This is a classic I love Harvey and we were very pleased with everything thank you

5 out of 5 stars I recommend pleasant...........2007-04-03

Jimmy Stewart creates the wonderfully endearing character of Elwood P. Dowd. Dowd has a genuine interest in his fellow man and has made the choice in life to be pleasant. He goes along through life smelling the flowers and inviting everyone to his home. His best friend and protector is an invisible 6 foot three-and-a-half inch tall rabbit named Harvey. Elwood is the friendly type who wishes to introduce everyone to Harvey. This creates no small stir at home. His sister Veta (Josephine Hull) and niece (Victoria Horne) wish for a normal society life, and finally after a disastrous party determine to commit Elwood to the sanatorium.

There are a lot of positive perspectives found in this movie as everyone who cares for Dowd wishes to help him while he in turn ends up indirectly helping them. This charming film was a favorite of Jimmy Stewart and is well worth adding to the film library.

Art film and road movie collide for Vanishing Point, an existential car chase across the desert in a post Easy Rider America. Barry Newman stars as Kowalski, a taciturn driver who bets that he can drive a new Dodge Challenger from Denver to San Francisco in 15 hours. He loads up on amphetamines and begins his odyssey through the contemporary west while a funky black DJ (Cleavon Little) turns the driver into a folk hero and broadcasts advice on dodging the cops. It's like a counterculture precursor to Smokey and the Bandit, with the road as the last bastion of freedom and the DJ as a combination commentator and mystical guide. The slim plot offers a network of society drop-outs that aid the "last free Man on Earth" (as the DJ describes him) on his obscure but obviously symbolic quest while flashbacks paint Kowalski as a world-weary hero. It doesn't really make much sense, but the amazing car chases and excellent stunt work are stunningly set against the American west, beautifully captured by cinematographer John A. Alonzo. Vanishing Point is most assuredly a product of its time, the heady, anything-goes era of rebellion in the early 1970s. --Sean Axmaker

Delivering exactly what its title promises, this celebration of stupidity was Jim Carrey's 1994 follow-up to Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask. The film pairs the rubber- faced wacky man with Jeff Daniels as the not-so-dynamic duo of Lloyd and Harry, dunderheads who come into the possession of a briefcase containing ransom money that is intended for Mob-connected kidnappers. Lauren Holly costars as the woman who lost the briefcase, and with whom Carrey falls in love (both in real life and as his moronic on-screen character). As Lloyd and Harry make a mad dash to return the briefcase (never aware of its contents), the bumbling buddies attract Mobsters, cops, and trouble galore. This lowbrow laugh-a-thon scores some solid hits for hilarity, but with gags involving ill-fated parakeets, buxom bimbos, and an overdose of laxatives, be prepared to put your brain--and good taste--on hold. --Jeff Shannon

only 'Holy Grail' and 'Caddyshack' can be quoted as much as this movie. Agree that this is Jim's masterpiece and also he and Jeff Daniels really worked well together. Look closely at the facial expressions of Jim Carrey. He does every emotion, but does it over the top. That is comedy genius.
Quite simply, one of the funniest movies ever made.

5 out of 5 stars On second thought, you might wanna run a comb through it.......2007-06-02

Get ready to laugh!
This is still Jim Carrey's funniest movie, a total classic comedy.
Lloyd and Harry (Jeff Daniels) play a couple of down-and outters who take a road trip to return a beautiful lady's briefcase they found.
Lloyd insists he made a love connection with this gorgeous Mary Swanson, telling his best friend Harry "emotions ran high, sparks flew...she actually talked to me!" Plus after some major crying he convinces him to drive the "shaggin wagon" to Aspen.
This trip is hilarious, filled with run-ins with the law, a low-rent mob guy, wrong turns, and the hillbilly bully C-Bass. It's too much fun!
This movie gets funnier everytime you watch it. Either that or it makes you dumber everytime. Regardless, you can't go wrong with this one!

5 out of 5 stars A 90s Comedic Masterpiece.......2007-04-15

This film is really funny filled with laughter from
start to finish. It's a classic. Jim Carrey is hillarious.
He's at a perfect level. Jeff Daniels is hillarious. The screenplay
is hillarious. It's well filmed. It's hillarious.

5 out of 5 stars The icing on the proverbial cake.......2007-03-28

Dumb and Dumber is one of those movies that if you really think about it, kind of relates to you Junior and Senior year of High School. My best friend and I even went to the extent of buying blue and orange tuxes with matching canes just to stand in the front lobby of the gym to do sword play! It was great.

The unrated Director's Cut DVD really tops off what was one of the funniest movies ever created. The deleted scenes were great and would only have been better had they been placed where they need to be in the film, but that point is able to be ignored because of the spectacular nature of the film. The cast interviews were interesting and kind put you into light over reasons why some of the things happened as they did.

If you were a fan of the original film, this one IS a worthwhile upgrade.

5 out of 5 stars I have not read the book....AND I AM GLAD!!!.......2007-06-18

Excellent..superb..well acted..well scripted..dark and brooding......I could go on and on! We review FILMS here at Amazon...not the book from which the film came! As a film, Patricia Rozema's adaptation of Jane Austen's MANSFIELD PARK stands on it's own as a stinging, satirical view of the life and times of one Fanny Price in 1806 England. All that is Austen, the "advantageous alliances" that are made through marriage, scandals that could kill a family's reputation, the pecking order of sons for inheritance, and the heart as the moral compass and guide are all here, and brought to the screen with great effect infused with a little bit of naughtiness and innuendo. This retelling of MANSFIELD PARK is so interesting and wonderfully reconceived that it far outweighs the BBC version for it's fresh and new characterizations of Fanny and the Bertrams and the Crawfords.

What I really like about this MANSFIELD PARK is Rozema's clever weaving of the English Slave Trade into the fiber of the film. No doubt this WAS THE hot topic of the time as in 1807 the trade of the Middle Passage WAS abolished in England.(See the current film AMAZING GRACE)Yes,people who sought their fortunes in it DID turn "to tobacco",which was the trade simply continued in America!!!

As far as performances...they are OUTSTANDING. Harold Pinter as Sir Thomas was played with great complexity and the late Sheila Gish as Fanny's Aunt is one of the best comedic turns yet for an Austen adaptation!

Lesley Barber's soundtrack is lush, romantic and also full of witty motifs to propel the action.

This MANSFIELD PARK is full of fine direction, sets, costumes and modern sensibility that makes the timeless Austen all the more compelling. The film never lags and is quite clever. 5******'s for Rozema's Austen!

4 out of 5 stars If You Don't Mind a little Affection between Cousins.......2007-05-24

I am always challenged in finding any kind of romance in the characters of Mansfield Park. They are cousins. Back in Ms. Austen's day, this was cool. To me, it is SO not.

This telling of the story, however, is really fun. I love the dramatic pauses at the end. I love the nasty Mrs. Norris. I love the artful Crawfords and the artless Edmund. Most of all, I LOVE Fanny, the smart creative Fanny that is presented in this movie. She totally makes the movie.

4 out of 5 stars Most enjoyable.......2007-05-15

Most Janeites will disregard this film as not being true to the novel and claim the actors are too "pretty." I however, think this film is strong enough to stand on it's own without having to be completely true to the original. The characters are strong, the acting honest and raw, and Fanny is very funny, in a very Jane Austenesque subtle, ironic way. I am glad to own it.

4 out of 5 stars Great for romantic movie lovers, not so good for Austen purists.......2007-05-12

I wouldn't call myself an Austen purist, but I definitely compare the books with the movies I watch. For purists of Jane Austen's novel, this movie really tears the book apart substituting characters and cutting some out completely. But as a movie, Mansfield Park is one of my favorites. Most of the more recent Jane Austen adaptations really stole my heart in the movie category and this one was no exception. The heart of Jane Austen's story is still there and, as we all know, no one can write about love and romance quite like Jane Austen.

So purists: Beware! Dramatic and Romantic movie lovers: Check this one out!

4 out of 5 stars It is difficult to put Austen's work to film... .......2007-05-11

I always anticipate the difficulty of a relatively short film (2 hours or under) being able to fully bring to life the characters of ANY complex and beloved novel. Aside from maybe the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, very few movies who aspire to bring Jane Austen's novels to life ever do. That being said. This movie is a piece of art in its own right, and also should be seen as such. I enjoyed this film. And while it did take many liberties, I still feel it was a genuinely well done movie. I LOVE Jane Austen's novels, for she was a woman entrenched in her time but also ahead of her time. I don't think she would take her stories to be sacrosanct, as many of her admirers and critics do. I enjoyed this cast and what the director did with the story. I was endeared to this Mansfield Park and the world that was created in it.

Joseph Mankiewicz's moody classic is less ghost story than romantic fantasy, a handsome 1947 drama of impossible love set on the picturesque turn-of-the-century New England coast. Independent young widow Lucy Muir (the luminous Gene Tierney), desperate to escape her uptight in-laws, falls in love with a grand seaside house and moves in, only to discover the cantankerous ghost of the hot-tempered Captain Gregg (a histrionically flamboyant performance by Rex Harrison). Lucy refuses to let the bombastic captain frighten her away, earning his respect, his friendship, and later his love. They team up to turn the captain's salty memoirs into a bestseller, but as his affection grows he fades away, leaving Lucy free to undertake a more worldly suitor, notably a charismatic children's author (George Sanders at his smarmy smoothest) with his own guarded secret. Charles Lang's melancholy black-and-white photography and Bernard Herrmann's haunting score set the tone for this sublime adult drama, and Tierney delivers one of her most understated performances as the resolute Mrs. Muir. Mankiewicz turns this ghost story into a refreshingly mature and down-to-earth romance. --Sean Axmaker

Description

A romance between a young widow and a sea captain's ghost weaves a magical tale of immortal love. Determined to live her life the way she wants, newly widowed Lucy Muir (Gene Tierney) declines her straitlaced in-laws demand that she live with them and moves with her daughter (a young Natalie Wood) to the seaside into a cottage haunted by the handsome, blustering Captain Gregg (Rex Harrison). A deal is struck between the two in the wee hours of the morning allowing Lucy to stay in the house and the captain to materalize only in the master bedroom. As they gradually get to know each other better, Lucy's spunk and stubborness gains first the captain's grudging respect, then his heart. But when another man woos Lucy, both must face that her future lies with the living, not in the spirit world.

5 out of 5 stars Deeper, Richer, and More Complex Than Its High Concept Romance Suggests .......2007-06-30

THIS REVIEW REVEALS SPOILERS ABOUT THE PLOT. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW HOW THE PLOT DEVELOPS, DON'T READ THIS REVIEW

I saw "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" years ago on television. I was just a kid and I noticed, mostly, the high concept romance: A spunky, living, twentieth-century woman is in love with a pre-feminist, sea captain ghost. I enjoyed the film's wit and romance, but then I filed it and forgot about it, thinking of it as a clever concept, but not a classic.

Because my own reaction to the film was rather shallow and cliched, I thought that the film itself was rather shallow and cliched, that it was just about its obvious wit and romance, with nothing deeper there.

I recently rewatched the film. I saw the same amusing, stylish, witty, clever, high-concept romance -- living woman loves ghost -- that I had seen for the first time as a child. But there is a whole 'nother movie here beneath the surface style, a movie of great depth.

As soon as the score began, while the Fox logo was still onscreen, I was all atremble, as if bewitched, with goosebumps and near tears. That score brought home to me the story and its attendant feelings of profound yearning and mystery.

Perhaps I had registered all this when I had seen it as a child, but not consciously.

Ken Geist, who offers commentary on the DVD version, said this about the score:

"I can't really say enough about it ... it's haunting; it's the most haunting thing about this ghost picture and he brings to it the same quality of his haunting movie with Hitchcock, 'Vertigo.' I think that Bernard Hermann is a great film composer, from 'Citizen Kane' right through to 'Taxi Driver' and this may be his finest...it's wildly romantic."

There is the feminist subtext. Significantly, the film is set in early twentieth century England, the place and time of sufragettes. Women were breaking new ground. Lucy Muir, the lead here, breaks new ground by leaving her in-laws, living alone, and making her own living.

Charles Lang's black and white cinematography is perfection, and it serves the story's various elements: its spookiness, romance, and humor, in turn -- perfectly.

Rex Harrison is a revelation. Yes, this is a romance; it's not great literature. And yet, like great literature, it takes on big, universal themes: the passage of time, mortality, yearning, the complexities of love, the limitations of the legendary loves.

Harrison's performance serves these themes in this frame perfectly. His Captain Daniel Gregg is a bit of a cartoon, but beneath the cartoon's exaggerations, you sense a real living, breathing, man, a boy who ran away from home and went to sea; his adopted mother yearning for him as his living lover would yearn for him once he died.

I can't think of any other actor who could have performed this role with the utter perfection, the combination of intelligence, conviction, generosity, focus and flair that Harrison gave it.

Gene Tierney is incredibly beautiful and that makes her believable as the target of the captain's yearning. she doesn't work 100% for me, though. She is perfect in "Laura" as the beautiful blank screen on which men project their fantasies; she's also perfect in "Razor's Edge" as a schemer.

I never see Tierney connect with the women in her audience, though. I don't sense that she's up there doing what she's doing for *me,* and the rest of the women in the audience, as I do with other female stars, from Garbo to Jane Fonda.

I would have liked to have seen Olivia de Havilland in the Lucy Muir part. She has that impossible combination of incredible, Fairy Queen beauty, plus human warmth and spunk so necessary in a romantic heroine.

Too, Natalie Wood as Anna Muir is woefully underused. Did director Joseph Mankiewicz not realize what a goldmine of charm and talent Wood was? A scene where Lucy and Anna perform their mother-daughter bond would have added depth to the film.

When i saw the film the first time, I had found George Sanders as Uncle Neddy / Miles Fairley to be a shallow snake in the grass and operator.

Viewing it this time, though, I see that Miles is as human as Lucy and Daniel, with his own tragic incapabilities. Daniel can't be a real -- flesh and blood -- man; Miles can't be a real -- stand up -- man. Sanders' eloquent face, half supercilious, half tragic -- renders Miles' failed manhood poignant and tragic.

Just as Daniel and Lucy yearn for what they can't have -- a flesh and blood romance -- Miles yearns for some impossible romance he can't have, and so he chases women by moonlight, and abandons them in the day.

"The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" highlights gender differences in love. Lucy Muir yearns for a man most women would love to meet -- a manly, strong, competent leader of men who is also dedicated to her, hangs on her every word, helps her around the house -- he even helps her with her in-laws.

In helping Lucy, Daniel is not belittling her; he leads her to become her best self. He rescues her financially, but, in that rescue, he reinforces her own strengths, strengths she had not been aware of before him. Finally, he sacrifices himself utterly for her, going so far as to remove her memory of him in order that she can live a happy life without him.

What a man. Does he exist? If he did, he'd have a very long waiting list of women trying to get to him. This man may not be just a fantasy in the movie; this man may be a fantasy in life, as well.

This film poses the question: Is there such a thing as a soulmate? Someone you are destined to meet, no matter what intervenes between you and that person? Does love transcend death?

5 out of 5 stars Girls Night In.......2007-06-29

I love this film. I always have. From the opening credits with that sweeping Bernard Herrmann score you know you're in for a treat; the duel delights of a "real" ghost and love story in one film. Rex Harrison is completely cantankerous and sexy at the same time and Gene Tierney is as always "exquisite" even in black and white.

I have been a fan of the talents of Bernard Herrmann ever since I first became aware that he was responsible for providing the perfect backdrop for suspense in Alfred Hitchcock films. He does a beautiful job here continually reminding the audience with the plaintive strain of strings that these two lovers are "star-crossed" by death itself.

Then, of course, the best part is that Death intervenes again and gives them a second chance at love.

I recommend this to anyone who loves Love and happy endings with a "twist".

1 out of 5 stars Gift was broken.......2007-06-27

The DVD froze on scene 15 and it was a gift so I had to get it from a different source-I was not happy at all.

5 out of 5 stars The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.......2007-06-25

The ever-talented Mankiewicz's deeply romantic "Mrs. Muir" is pure Hollywood fantasy, driven by the entrancing presence of its two fabulous co-stars. While a love story between a gruff dead seaman given to salty turns of phrase and a gorgeous grieving mother might sound a bit hokey, the chemistry between Tierney (radiant as ever) and Harrison (quite dashing as an unapologetic man's man) is not only credible but winning. Worlds better than its `70s TV spinoff and heartier than latter-day imitations like 1990's "Ghost," this is one cinematic haunted house you should be sure to visit.

4 out of 5 stars bewitching romance.......2007-05-29

THE GHOST AND MRS MUIR is a top-flight romantic story...where the leads don't even kiss. But more about that later.

Young widow Lucy Muir (Gene Tierney) packs up her little daughter (Natalie Wood) and moves to the windswept English coast. There she falls in love, first with an abandoned mansion overlooking the sea; and again with it's mysterious occupant, Captain Daniel Gregg (Rex Harrison)...a ghost.

Despite their obvious differences, Daniel trusts Lucy enough to help him write his memoirs. The money will help Lucy stay in the mansion without having to bother her tiresome in-laws. Along the way, their special friendship blossoms into love, but could a ghost and a mortal ever find a common ground for happiness?

Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison deliver gentle performances in this very singular love story, based on the bestselling novel by R.A. Dick. Tierney is especially grand here, in a rare departure from the noir dramas that had catapulted her to super-stardom.

THE GHOST AND MRS MUIR was filmed in 1947, a period in Gene Tierney's private life when she was under much emotional strain. Her marriage to fashion designer Oleg Cassini was beginning to unravel, and her young daughter Daria was institutionalised due to severe physical and mental disabilities (sustained during pregnancy when Tierney came into contact with a fan who was sick with German Measles). Despite what must have been happening in her private life, her performance as Lucy Muir is so delicate and nuanced, and simply perfection. Everyone falls in love with her, including the audience (and Tierney's costumes here were designed by Cassini).

The film also features an early performance from child star Natalie Wood (her role is relatively minor and she only features in a handful of scenes). The supporting cast includes George Sanders, Edna Best, Vanessa Brown, Anna Lee, Isobel Elsom, and Robert Coote.

Having been described as "wicked" and "debauched," Anthony Bourdain's culinary memoir was bound to be a tough sell for network TV. In Kitchen Confidential's sitcom incarnation, dark-haired Anthony becomes blond, blue-eyed Jack (Bradley Cooper). In the pilot, the recovering alcoholic moves from a pizzeria to a brasserie. The catch is that he has to hire a staff in 48 hours, so he turns to pastry expert Seth (Nicholas Brendon, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), seafood genius Teddy (John Cho, Smiley Face), and sous-chef Steven (Owain Yeoman). He also inherits kitchen worker Jim (John Francis Daley, Freaks and Geeks). In reality, Bourdain ran the shop at New York's celebrated Les Halles. In the show, Jack oversees the kitchen at the fictional Nolita. Pino (Frank Langella, terrific as usual) manages the joint, while the wait staff includes his tightly-wound daughter, Mimi (Bonnie Somerville, NYPD Blue) and the bubble-headed Tanya (Jaime King, Pearl Harbor). As in producer Darren Star's Sex and the City, the central character narrates, there's no laugh track, and more of the comedy revolves around sex than work.

While Cooper (The Wedding Crashers) isn't the most obvious choice to play Bourdain--and although Kitchen Confidential would've made more sense on cable--he does a surprisingly credible job, even if the writing lets him down on occasion. Realistic or not, severed fingers and singed eyebrows tend to play better in print than on the screen. Of the 13 episodes produced, FOX only aired four (back-to-back with Arrested Development), which is a shame as it was just starting to hit its stride. Guest stars include Bitty Schram ("Exile on Main Street"), John Larroquette ("Dinner Date with Death"), and Cooper's Alias co-star Michael Vartan ("French Fight"). --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Jack Bourdain had it all but messed it up going wild. Four years later, he ends up with a crappy job in Pizza Chain. Then, he gets an offer to get back in the game as the chef of a famous restaurant.

5 out of 5 stars "Yes Dear" survives, but THIS gets cancelled?.......2007-06-30

There really is no justice in the world when a sitcom like this gets cancelled after four episodes--four SUPERB episodes. What was Fox thinking? Alas, its appearance on DVD is some comfort. Commercial TV is full of head-scratching decisions, and this is one of them. But now's your chance: Get the DVD and enjoy what could have been! The cast is uniformly good, the music only adds to the quirkiness and the plots are hilarious. And of course, Bradley Cooper makes a perfect lead.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant comedy that was never given a chance.......2007-06-27

It's a real crime that Fox never let this brilliant comedy (they only aired 4 of 13 episodes) find an audience. Like "Arrested Development," it was canned way before its time. Bradley Cooper leads an ensemble cast as a fallen chef who is given a second (or last) chance to prove himself. He gathers a rag tag team and they mix like oil and water with the wait staff, with plenty of laughs and sexual tension thrown in. Some of the best episodes include "Rabbit Test," where today's special arrives alive; "Teddy Takes Off," where the temperamental fish guy wants recognition for his recipes; and the hilarious "French Fight," featuring Cooper's former "Alias" co-star as a rival chef who steals a recipe and starts a war. The casting is great, the writing witty, and the premise is fresh and far more entertaining than all the reality restaurant shows combined.

Extras include a tour of the Nolita restaurant set and interviews with some of the cast who also seem dumbstruck as to why the show was canceled.

Yep, they canceled this and yet junk shows like "Fact of Life" and "Full House" managed to stay on nearly a decade. And God help us, both live on in reruns.

4 out of 5 stars great series.......2007-06-27

I wish they had continued the show. It is funny to see the similarities from the show and actual restaurant work.

5 out of 5 stars This is MUST SEE TV!.......2007-06-21

Name one FOX half hour comedy that has been a hit in recent years -- cartoons excluded. If "Kitchen Confidential" aired on NBC, it would have at least been a decent hit -- if not a huge one. This show would have been perfecd for NBC's Thursday's. Instead, it aired on FOX. There audience just isn't sophisticated enough to enjoy a show like this.

That said, I thoroughly enjoyed this DVD. The show is funny. It depicts the ongoings of the restaurant business in (sort of) a realistic way... more so than any other series. The acting is well done.

I highly recommend this DVD.

One of the best comedy series in a long time. I laughed 'til I cried!

The Spice Girls have plenty of personality, and that helps make up for the lapses in inspiration that keep their feature debut from being a truly good movie and potential cult piece. As with Richard Lester's Hard Day's Night, Spice World is about a few days in the collective life of the all-female British group; and the banter is suggestively representative of how the Girls all speak to one another. But the value of individual scenes is woefully inconsistent, reaching a low point in a dumb sequence when a gaggle of extraterrestrials hit them up for autographs. Fortunately, the film is full of great people, or in some cases good people doing great things: Richard E. Grant, Roger Moore, Alan Cummings, Mark McKinney, and tons of cameos from the likes of Elton John, Elvis Costello, and Bob Hoskins. You don't have to be 11 years old and female to get some enjoyment out of this movie, but it might help. --Tom Keogh

This was a movie I got for my daughters friend and she loves it! To remind you she is 13 and enjoys the lovable and light hearted movie!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Stupid Movie I've Ever Seen.......2007-03-12

This movie is simply hilarious. I was quite captivated by the Spice Girls when this movie first came out. Shortly after, I outgrew them, but I still LOVE this movie. Anyone who has not seen it, needs to. Period.

2 out of 5 stars Cruel Brittania.......2007-02-13

Britain, circa 1997. Tony Blair is elected P.M. Princess Di perishes. And the Spice Girls are unleashed to an unsuspecting public. This effort is an attempt to cash in on the phenomenon before a fickle populace turns their attention to the next best thing. To be fair, the girls are not to blame for what a tedious flick this is. Rather, they are appealing and prove to be the film's lone redeeming factor. The fault lies in the script that tries to do for the Spice Girls what "A Hard Days' Night" did for the Beatles. Whereas the Fab Four's film was full of wit and cogent commentary on Beatlemania this flick is unfunny and basically incoherent about what it's trying to say about the Spice craze. I was reminded more of the Monkees' "Head" than I was of "A Hard Days' Night". Lots of celeb cameos (Roger Moore, Elton John, et al) that amount to naught. Oh, well. On to "From Justin to Kelly".

5 out of 5 stars Loves It.......2007-01-25

I had this movie on VHS, and lost it. One day I had this incredibly strong urge to watch it, so I ordered it and now I watch it all the time. It's fun to sing along to in a group. One thing, the dance instructor isn't saying "porta bra," he is actually saying "port de bras," a French term for movement of the arms that is used in ballet.
