This unusual but strikingly affecting movie stars Marisa Tomei as Ruby, a young woman with a string of bad relationships behind her, who falls in love with a guy named Sam (Vincent D'Onofrio, Full Metal Jacket, The Whole Wide World). Initially, Sam just seems quirky, but eventually he tells her his secret: he's a time traveler from 400 years in the future. Happy Accidents walks a delicate line between genres, never making it clear whether Sam is delusional or telling the truth until the end. The strange blend of genres (which plays like romantic comedy, not like science fiction) may make some viewers balk, but writer-director Brad Anderson (Next Stop Wonderland) has a gift for both revealing psychological insights and sensual moments--like when Sam explains principals of time travel by running his hands up Ruby's leg--that, combined with the superb cast, are constantly engaging and sincerely touching. --Bret Fetzer

1 out of 5 stars A Film About Time Travel That Will Waste Your Time.......2007-06-23

I guess I don't share the artistic sensibilities of the other reviewers that have posted their reviews. Nonetheless I give this "little" film two thumbs down - way down - in fact if they were any lower they would be hell. That's how far down. While the story's plot is intriguing, its execution would be considered cruel and unusual punishment for the audience. Long slow moving story about a man from the future returns to the past to save a girl's life. Painful, unfulfilling and a predictable ending. He saves her life - hopefully revealing the ending will save some of you from wasting your time watching this like I did. Now I wish someone from the future would come back and save me from watching this movie.

Thank you - I was amazingly surprised at how much I enjoyed the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Accidents is just that!.......2007-03-29

This movie is an overlooked gem. Without spoiling the ending, lets just say you are not sure until the final scene who Sam (Vincent D'Onofrio) really is. Marissa Tomei is great. And Vincent's fans will love watching the movie again with his commentary on (special feature).

5 out of 5 stars I love this movie!!!!.......2007-01-30

I saw this as a "happy accident". my roommate left it in the wrong case, so thinking I was watching "goodfellas" for the millionth time, I got a bit confused when Marisa Tomei was in the credits. Being lazy at heart, I left it in the DVD player anyway and found a really great movie. I had never heard of it while it was at the theatres, but TRUST ME, this is one great flick!! More than your average Chick Flick!

5 out of 5 stars Turned out to be quite a Happy Accident for me..........2006-12-10

At the time that I discovered this gem of a movie in my local video store I had actually never even heard of it. Now being a Vincent D'Onofrio fan I figured that at the very least I would enjoy watching him on screen (well, on my television) even if the film didn't turn out to be that great. And with Marisa Tomei as the other lead I thought, how bad can it be? It had a couple of positive reviews on the cover as well as a basic idea about the plot. Other than that I knew nothing about "Happy Accidents" until I sat down to watch it for the first time.

In a nutshell, and without giving too much away, I guess I would have to describe this movie as a very quirky and unusual love story. Marisa plays the part of Ruby, a young woman with a history of being attracted to men with lots of problems (mostly psychological problems). We get the idea from very early on that Ruby has had more than her fair share of past boyfriends with these so-called problems, as we see her and her two close girlfriends maintaining and updating a shoebox full of past relationship photos. Ruby just wants to meet the right guy. Is that really asking for too much? So she continues to try and try and try.

O.K., so in comes Vincent's character Sam, a sweet and sensitive young man who seems to be instantly drawn towards Ruby from the first time they meet. Before long they are falling in love and Sam has moved into Ruby's apartment. They're very cute together - a real chemistry. Initially, and probably because of Ruby's past history with so many strange men, she becomes a bit suspicious about some of Sam's quirks. Almost like a child who is just discovering the world for the first time, Sam seems to be curious and fascinated with almost everything. His wide-eyed amazement over every day things that most people take for granted is unusual, I suppose, but other than that he just seems to be a really sweet guy who is just a bit different. As Ruby begins to notice more and more of these quirks though she becomes a bit more suspicious. We see her consulting with her best friend as well as her therapist on a regular basis, but nothing seems to be too strange so she happily continues her relationship with her new live-in boyfriend.

So what about this relationship is so quirky? Is it the fact that Sam is always so evasive whenever Ruby asks him about his life, his family, his past, etc? Or is it the fact that there seems to be so much discrepancy in what he tells her versus what she discovers? Sam tells Ruby for example that he doesn't keep photos of his family because he doesn't like to live in the past. At first that seems to suffice until Ruby discovers family photos in Sam's wallet. Then there is the discovery of Sam's sea sickness pills, the glassy-eyed staring spells that overcome him from time to time and his obsessive drawings of someone named Chrystie Delancey. Eventually Ruby demands an explanation for what she refers to as Sam's idiosyncrasies and Sam reluctantly tells her that he is a back traveller from the year 2470.

So is Sam just someone who tells ridiculous stories in an attempt to impress or amuse his girlfriend? Is he just trying to maintain a sort of mystique about himself? Or, is Sam actually crazy? The only other option would be that Sam is telling the truth about being from the future. So what should Ruby believe? These are the questions that she finds herself facing as she struggles to either maintain or end her relationship with Sam. The challenge for the viewer of this unusual film is to decide for herself or himself what the real story behind Sam's story is. You wont find any spoilers in this review though. You have to decide for yourself.

I would highly recommend "Happy Accidents" for anyone who is looking for a very unusual love story. There are moments of drama, moments of comedy and an ongoing mystery that may still puzzle you even after the film ends. If you still aren't able to figure out what the deal with Sam really is you can always check out the DVD's audio commentary. Before returning this movie to the store I watched it a 2nd time. Then I decided to buy a copy and I never seem to grow tired of watching it. If you're a fan of Vincent or Marisa (or both) then you'll probably love this film. But even if you aren't a huge Vincent/Marisa fan you'll probably still love it. Its just a great film and one I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a fun, quirky, and very unusual love story.

A high-profile action/exploitation thriller set in the present, The Siege is really a fantasy that extrapolates from major terrorist attacks. Denzel Washington is FBI special agent Hubbard, "Hub" to his friends, whose anti-terrorist task force must track down the terrorist cells responsible for a spate of bombings in New York. His partner is an FBI agent of Arabian extraction (played convincingly by Tony Shalhoub), proving not all Arabs are bad guys--a point the film should be lauded for making again and again. Thrown into the mix is a CIA spy (played almost kittenish at times by Annette Bening), whose ties to the terrorists appear to be at the center of the conflicts. When the bombings escalate out of control, the President institutes martial law, sending in General Devereaux (played with impenetrable countenance by Bruce Willis) with tanks and troops to ferret out the terrorists. Echoes of Japanese-Americans in internment camps ring out as Arabs, including the son of the Arab-American FBI agent, are herded into a stadium. Periodic audio-montages of "man in the street" sentiments anchor the material in the present and show how serious and relevant the material is. But finally what we have is a taut and entertaining popcorn movie, giving itself the humanistic nod when it can. --Jim Gay

The visionary writer-director behind such films as Passion Fish, Lone Star and Sunshine State, OscarÂ(r) nominee* John Sayles has been at the forefront of independent cinema for more than twenty years. In this moving and compassionate film, Sayles presents a 'sympathetic, realistic portrait (Boxoffice) of Lianna, a young wife and mother who leaves her husbandfor another woman and embarks on a turbulent journey of self-discovery. Lianna must face the anger and confusion of her husband as well as the raised eyebrows of her community. But when her new loveralso rejects her, she faces the most difficult task of all: She must learn to love herself. *1996:Original Screenplay, Lone Star; 1992: Original Screenplay, Passion Fish

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars stands up even without the lesbian interest.......2005-10-16

Film is more about personal discovery than a love story, Lianna at first seems frivolous almost selfish but as the film progresses she becomes stronger and gains a peronality. A realistic story of self discovery. The reactions of those around her makes for further depth. Although rather dated I would recommend as the quality makes it fairly timeless

5 out of 5 stars Troubled people, love in many forms and a fine story.......2005-07-02

This little-known 1983 film must have been shocking in its time. It's about a young mother in an unhappy marriage to a college professor. She begins an affair but the twist of this story is that the affair is with a female teacher. She then has to cope with a broken marriage, the angst of her two children, and a whole new world of the lesbian subculture. Add to this the fact that the older woman is not as anxious to commit to the relationship. She doesn't want to be exposed as it would hurt her career and she also has a long-standing relationship with a woman in another state. The young woman now finds that life is just as difficult for her as it was when she was married to her uncaring spouse. There's high drama here, but it never turns maudlin.

Linda Griffiths is the young woman and she's great in the role of a woman who is suddenly cast into a lifestyle that is totally new to her. Jane Hallaren is the older teacher in an excellent performance. She, too, comes across as a troubled human being. There are some very tender scenes between the two of them and they are touching and authentic. I was moved by their dilemma and by their performances.

My highest accolades, however, go to John Sayles who wrote and directed it. He even cast himself in a small role. There's an extra feature on the DVD which features him discussing this film which is a perfect complement to the film itself. Through the years, he has proven his talent for bringing out the many complex layers in seemingly simple situations. He certainly did a great job with Lianna. It's a really fine film. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Pulls no punches.......2004-12-30

A terrific movie and one that any person concerned about relationships would enjoy and appreciate. I'd say that this and Desert Hearts are my two favorite lesbian movies.

5 out of 5 stars Twenty Years Ahead.......2004-11-24

'Lianna' is one of the few John Sayles movies I literally had to wait years to see. Virtually buried for decades, all I knew about this film was the very tepid reviews I had read about it. Fortunately when it became affordably available I got to view it for the first time. I was expecting a rampant "movie-of-the-week" sentiment, but instead I saw a provocative, insightful film which felt far more like it was made last year, rather than in the early 80's. 'Lianna' is a bold, visionary film that is less about lesbianism per se than it is about the various reactions of the people in her life to her sexual awakening. It is a very passionate film experience which is less polished than Sayles later films, but has more emotion than I've experienced in all of his films combined.

    5 out of 5 stars I love john sayles.......2004-02-14

There I said it I love John Sayles...of course plutonically lol

This is a great lesbian film that understands emotions, though older and low budget the theme is timeless and so are the emotions...see this film it is a turning point in films about lesbians yes it is made by a guy but someone should make him an honorary lesbian...he "sees" us.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Amazing this came out just 3 years before 9/11.......2007-05-07

-Back when this movie came out a lot of people including myself regarded the events in the movie as being a bit too far fetched. I mean there's no way that some terrorist attacks could put everyone in fear and strip away our civil rights. Sadly that's the case we have here and this movie gets it right on every level. It's as if the writers went into the future and saw what was happening and wrote about it back when they first made this movie. It's a very real story about fictional events that hits very close to home. Not to mention that the terror attack that takes place in the movie happens in New York.

-Director Edward Zwick and writers Lawrence Wright and Menno Meyjes did a great job capturing what happens to a city that has a such a tragedy falls on their lap. They never for a second try to milk or anything, or make anyone out to seem like the bad guy but rather just tell the story from a god's eye view point. Each of the characters believe that they are doing what's right. From the over zealous General who sees nothing wrong with killing a prisoner if he feels it's right for the country, to the FBI agent that tries his best to put an end to the horrible ordeal that has befallen his city. Before 9/11 I didn't pay attention to the movie, I certainly enjoyed it and thought it was good, but after those events I now have a newfound respect for the movie and what it was trying to do. It's not a mere piece of entertainment, but a very powerful story of what happens when fear gets the better of us.

-The power house cast in the movie is without a doubt it's greatest strength. We get A list actors playing regular people trying to make sense of the whole madness of the situation and they pull it off wonderfully. The cast is made up of Denzel Washington, Annette Benning, Bruce Willis, and Tony Shaloub. Washington plays the FBI agent that does his job perfectly and always catches the bad guy. Benning plays Sharon who is a lot more complex than she appears to be. Tony Shaloub is known for his great quirky stuff but in this movie he's as serious as it gets and he does a wonderful job of it. Bruce Willis is also great as the General who is loyal to a fault. All the actors and also the supporting actors all inhabit their roles with great believability and work really well in the movie.

-The only slight problem I have with the movie is that it does get a wee bit too preachy at times. Some the speeches by Washington does get close to being pretentious as hell but it's not too bad. It's not like they have heroic brass backing him up or anything but it does get a bit cheesy at times. The music does get a bit distracting too. Revell does a fantastic job with the score that's for sure, but the more ethnic stuff does get a bit old though. It's like every movie that has a Middle Eastern character in it must have some wailing female vocals and ethnic woodwinds. It gets really old really fast.

-It's really creepy how similar the events in this movie are to how things really are now, but even if you put all that aside what you have is a very solid movie with a great cast and a great message.

4 out of 5 stars if only we could turn back the clock...........2007-04-06

A prophetic movie that I have seen 3 times since September 11, 2001. I was in NYC on 9/11 and volunteered as a nurse at ground zero. I had not yet seen "The Siege, " but ironically, when I walked right up to the wreckage that was the Twin Towers in the cover of darkness with flood lights all around, I remember saying to the person standing next to me: "If it weren't for the smell, I would think this wasn't real. It looks like a movie set." About a year later, my now husband and I saw "The Siege" and I was stunned. Forget White House Memos that were ignored, perhaps our government officials should have occasional field trips to the movies. I only hope that camps detaining Muslim Americans on their home soil and true Martial Law are the parts of the movie that are not prophetic, but only Hollywood. My fingers are crossed...

4 out of 5 stars when plot is overcome.......2007-03-26

the idea behind the story as well as the acting of the three main characters both overcome the actual plot of this movie. It recieved a higher grade then i would have given it because of the acting, and i almost wished that i could have seen it pre 9/11 as well as post 9/11, just to see how i would react differently. last night was the first time i've seen The Seige, and it was surprising. maybe not great, but surprising.

i think what got me the most was how the terrorists didn't care about their lives, just as they don't over in Iraq. as long as the message is clear and the word got out, they will continue doing what they are doing until the message is listened to. in the movie, it was amazing to see Hollywood's depiction of the chaos that would ensue after such an act. especially since this was before a real incident that happened just about the same way.

Watching the 1998 THE SIEGE in 2007 and then rolling through all the reviews of this film from the time of release to the present is a lesson in the power of the cinema. The obvious initial response was less about the film as a film than about the manner in which the FBI, CIA, Military, Terrorists, and public responded to the unimaginable: shouts of protests about 'glorification of occult terrorists', the Hollywood idea of the impossible happening, and the criticism of the fine cast of actors who steeped into roles 'beyond swallowing' are all here in these reviews.

Now, six years after 9/11 reviewers are taking a different view, though most still find the film pompous and obnoxious. Offensive versus defensive. And after viewing the movie as a movie it is gratifying to know that people feel strongly and are vocal about the depiction of the 'war against terrorism' we continue to lose. Movies that make people think and talk are valuable, and in that light the film is more successful than initially considered.

Yes, there are gaping holes in the script and the plot and the concept, but as a little thriller it maintains our attention throughout and offers some fine moments from actors such as Denzel Washington, Annette Bening, Tony Shalhoub, Bruce Willis, Sami Bouajila, Ahmed Ben Larby, Aasif Mandvi among others. And then there are the panoramas of New York City under siege with the Twin Towers standing mightily in the cityscape... It begs the question: if scriptwriter Lawrence Wright and director Edward Zwick (Blood Diamond, The Last Samurai, Courage Under Fire, Glory, Leaving Normal, Legends of the Fall, etc) were thinking along these lines and finding flaws in our intelligence forces, why weren't the leaders in Washington, DC in tune with 'absurd possibilities'? It makes one think - and that is the best thing about this film. Grady Harp, January 07

3 out of 5 stars A "terrorists come to Brooklyn" movie..........2006-12-30

The Siege is basically a "terrorists come to Brooklyn" movie. It stars Denzel Washington as leader of a FBI team investigating terrorist cells in NYC, Annette Bening as a sly and shifty CIA agent. Bruce Willis as the two-star Army general who brings his troops to town, and Tony Shalhoub as Washington's Arab-American partner (nice job, Tony).

So what happens WHEN things start blowing up? The FBI works flat out in stopping the bad guys. There are jurisdictional issues with other agencies. Shadowy folk remain shadowy. There are power plays. People want the ear of the president. And there are victims, heros, and villains. This movie has them all.

The plot had a convincing build-up, but the conclusion was a bit anti-climatic. The final cell was a bit too Hollywood, with everybody showing up at just the right time... and in the unoccupied public baths?

However, this movie is worth viewing for those first 80 minutes.

A hard-hitting and impressive low-budget independent film about love and racism, Zebrahead is a volatile mix of social commentary and powerful acting. Michael Rapaport (Mighty Aphrodite, Beautiful Girls) is a white urban high school student enamored of black rap culture who pursues and falls in love with the cousin (N'Bushe Wright) of his black best friend. Their intense romance brings out racial tensions in their school, among their friends and at home. Problems escalate as a notorious gang banger goes after the girl, forcing a schoolwide confrontation with violent results. With the flavor of a modern urban Romeo and Juliet love story and a showcase for the debut of two exceptional young actors, Zebrahead is a provocative sleeper film well worth checking out. --Robert Lane

5 out of 5 stars Held up better than I expected.......2006-04-16

I rented this to show a friend and was pleased that it held up so well over the years. The only thing dated was the hair-dos

As a Jew who grew up in largely black neighborhoods I can relate to the sense of being caught between worlds. My experience of coming from a Jewish background puts me on the outside of mainstream society in ways that the film barely touched on, but overall a great film.

Great character development and growth, The relationships between Zack and Dee as well as Zack and Nikki felt natural. I highly recommend it and may bring it in to show to my Job Corps trainees.

4 out of 5 stars Very good story..........2005-10-22

Very good story and somewhat of an underrated movie that most
people probably don't know about. It's a story of a white
guy trying to fit in and show that he shares some of the
same interests as mostly black town. Along with that, he
meets a beautiful young black women and interest grows.

It doesn't go all THAT deep and isn't truly anything original,
but it's a feel good movie that with solid actors keeps you
    watching to the end.

4 out of 5 stars Generations, races, Detroit, music.......2005-09-01

I saw this movie when it was first released. My first contact with modern pop music of the techno/hiphop (or whatever it is calld) era. Having watched the DVD about 12 years later, I was somehow disappointed. The story takes the viewpoint of teenagers and explores their relations among each other and with older generations - not unlike movies in the mold of Rebel Without a Cause. For people who do not belong to that age group this can be a bit boring. Zebrahead is definitely woth watching if you are interested in townscapes. Quite a lot of good, interesting location shooting in Detroit.

5 out of 5 stars Poignant and Very Real.......2004-11-23

"Zebrahead" is living proof that low-budget films can have just as great an impact if not greater than the big name movies. This movie sends an important message, and it is one that everyone should see.

The place is Detroit, Michigan with a large African American population. Our main character is Zack (played fantastically by Michael Rapaport), a white Jewish high school kid fascinated with African American culture and rap music. When Zack isn't driving his jeep with the rap music blaring its bouncy rythem, he is an exquisite DJ who creates his own cassettes.

After Zack breaks up with his white girlfriend, he gains an interest in the new girl from New York; beautiful Nikki (played nicely by N'Bushe Wright), who is African American and the cousin of Zack's best friend Dee (played by DeShonn Castle) who is also African American. After gaining permission from Dee and getting advice from his lust-loving father (played by the late Ray Sharkey) and his grandfather at their inner city record store "Saul's Melody Land," Zack starts dating Nikki much to the dismay of Nikki's family, peers at school, and the hot-headed, tough-talking school bully Nut (played wonderfully by Ron Johnson).

Racial tensions boil to a head when Nut wants the gorgeous Nikki for himself and doesn't want a white guy like Zack standing in the way. Nut's attempts to get Nikki to be his are met by her turning him down, which adds fuel to the growing fire of anger building inside of him and his anamosity toward Zack. Despite Nut, Nikki's friends advising Nikki to stick with her own race, (particularly a mop-haired, spectacle-wearing preacher kid) and the stares and curiousity that Nikki gets from Zack's white friends, Zack and Nikki are determined to stick together.

All hell breaks loose at the local skating rink after Nut's violent tongue turns physical and Dee is killed. Nut disappears and the school is left to mourn over the loss of Dee and intensly discuss who should have done what, who is to blame, and of course the issue of black and white. One reviewer summed it up very well; while an Asian girl sobs in her seat, the African American preacher kid gets into a heated fight with an Italian, and not far away, Zack and Nikki are holding each other in grievance and love.

It is a story about love, jealously, friendship, violence and race. Put all these issues together and you get a remarkable, poignant, realistic film that opens our eyes to the morals and dilemma's of life and the struggle against controversy. To me, the stars of the film are Michael Rapaport (Zack) and Ron Johnson (Nut); both do oustanding with the characters they portray. Anger, emotion, attitude, language; both do a flawless job with everything.

If you have not yet watched this movie, go to your local video store and rent it right now! Once you've seen "Zebrahead" you will never forget it, and you will automatically want to add it to your movie collection. Believe me; it won't collect much dust on your shelf. "Zebrahead" is highly recommended.

--Jim Gay

It recieved a higher grade then i would have given it because of the acting, and i almost wished that i could have seen it pre 9/11 as well as post 9/11, just to see how i would react differently. last night was the first time i've seen The Seige, and it was surprising. maybe not great, but surprising.

i think what got me the most was how the terrorists didn't care about their lives, just as they don't over in Iraq. as long as the message is clear and the word got out, they will continue doing what they are doing until the message is listened to. in the movie, it was amazing to see Hollywood's depiction of the chaos that would ensue after such an act. especially since this was before a real incident that happened just about the same way.

at parts, i was wishing for less unnecessary plot points, as well as some of them to come together better, but as for a whole, The Seige did it's job.

        1 out of 5 stars I Know the Answer!.......2004-10-23

It appears nobody has chosen to review this movie in a considerable amount of time. I don't know if the dorks in the movie ever figured out what this means, but I can shed some light on it. Between 1956-58, I forget, there was a black singer who had a soulful tune whose name I cannot remember (he may have been a one-hit wonder) but he was trying to use some expression that he did not have the intellect or education for, so he either made up something or mispronounced something and it came out "pompatus". To give it some authority, years later Wolfman Jack (you've heard of Wolfman Jack? As in the movie, "American Graffiti"?) used the expression in a song "Clap for the Wolfman" that he participated in with the Guess Who. (I saw them perform it in person). Steve Miller's use of it came later. Nobody seems sure what that guy back in the 50s meant. I can't see EVERY movie that comes out, though I did see the preview, so I took Roger Ebert's word that it sucks. Five stars, my ***.

1 out of 5 stars The Pompousness of Schenkman.......2003-02-21

A group of idiots hang around to chug beers and engage in "clever" conversation. The shallowness of the characters is belied by the director's resort to making a "political statement" at the end of the film. Add four stars if you're still living in the 60's. ...

3 out of 5 stars Good start but it tapers off.............2001-02-03

This film starts off well, with witty dialogue and dead-on portrayals of 30 somethings dealing with the urban dating scence. After awhile, though, the film seems overlong and the characterizations run out of steam.

The guys in the film are definitely self-absorbed and verbal in a way that, upon reflection, may be particularly recognizeable to city dwellers. I wonder whether the experiences depicted here will resonate as well with non-urbanites.

5 out of 5 stars Witty, Funny, and Meaningful.......1999-07-27

The Pompatus of Love is one of my all-time favorite movies. The fast paced dialogue is always entertaining, and this movie addresses an issue everybody has to face at some point: how to attain a fulfilling love life before you go crazy trying. Very funny, and with a light enough touch that it'll make you think without being cheezy. You've got to see this movie!

5 out of 5 stars Why THE POMPATUS OF LOVE is good........1999-04-30

Now you may wonder why i gave this movie a 5 star rating. Well... I rented it thinking it would be another "kitchy" indie movie. I was very suprised to see that this movie had a amazing plot, and the story just make me sit there for around 40 minutes after pondering love and life and all that stuff. It is an amazing movie. Well worth the 5 star. A hip love movie for the 90's

--Jim Gay

It recieved a higher grade then i would have given it because of the acting, and i almost wished that i could have seen it pre 9/11 as well as post 9/11, just to see how i would react differently. last night was the first time i've seen The Seige, and it was surprising. maybe not great, but surprising.

i think what got me the most was how the terrorists didn't care about their lives, just as they don't over in Iraq. as long as the message is clear and the word got out, they will continue doing what they are doing until the message is listened to. in the movie, it was amazing to see Hollywood's depiction of the chaos that would ensue after such an act. especially since this was before a real incident that happened just about the same way.

at parts, i was wishing for less unnecessary plot points, as well as some of them to come together better, but as for a whole, The Seige did it's job.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Effects of Cinematic Media: Reaction.......2007-01-24
