The brash British crime-fighing duo of Ash and Scribbs--Kate Ashurst and Emma Scribbins--are back in fine cheeky form in the second series of Murder in Suburbia. The BBC series is unlike any American crime procedural, partly because of the comely and very real young women detectives who play the leads--they're slightly neurotic, their love lives are messy, and they actually admit to getting rattled when solving creepy cases. But their focus and offbeat crime-solving methods nearly always save the day. The series is as enjoyable for the banter between the two as for the actual crime plots involved. The episode "Witch," for instance, centers on a murder of a student at an exclusive country school, and draws Ash and Scribbs into not only an unsettling clique of witchcraft practitioners, but forces them to relive some of their own not so ideal high school days. Dry humor as much as their ingenuity saves the day. Scribbs: "Do you think there's some kind of IQ test you have to fail to be come an estate agent?" Ash: "Yeah. It's the same test all my ex-boyfriends failed." --A.T. Hurley

Description

The complete second series of the BBC America mystery hit

Caroline Catz and Lisa Faulkner return as the cheeky police detectives Kate "Ash" Ashurst and Emma "Scribbs" Scribbins, still cracking wise as they crack six all-new cases in the tony British 'burb of Middleford. "Let me see," observes one of their adversaries. "You must be the blonde, dizzy, but at the same time practical, down-to-earth one." (That would be Scribbs.) "And you're the dark, intense, ever-so-slightly neurotic one." (That would be Ash.) "Just one question—who does the jokes?" Actually, they both do, skewering middle-class mores while solving all manner of baffling mysteries. Their bemused boss (Jeremy Sheffield) keeps his charges under a loose rein—so long as their unorthodox style leads to closing cases.

Join Ash and Scribbs on their suburban beat, and see why their unique blend of humor and chutzpah has won legions of devoted mystery fans on both sides of the Atlantic.

Good series from across the pond... This is the 2nd season DVD of the British series which follows the cases of Detectives Kate Ashurst "Ash" and Emma Scribbins "Scribbs". Ash and Scribbs are a very good team and there is good interaction and humor between them and with their boss as they solve the crimes that come across their desks in the upper middle class town of Middleford. Each show captures your interest.

Product Description

Since World War II North Americans have invested much of their newfound wealth in suburbia. It has promised a sense of space, affordability, family life and upward mobility. As the population of suburban sprawl has exploded in the past 50 years, so too has the suburban way of life become embedded in the American consciousness. Suburbia, and all it promises, has become the American Dream. But as we enter the 21st century, serious questions are beginning to emerge about the sustainability of this way of life. With brutal honesty and a touch of irony, The End of Suburbia explores the American Way of Life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era, as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply. World Oil Peak and the inevitable decline of fossil fuels are upon us now, some scientists and policy makers argue in this documentary. The consequences of inaction in the face of this global crisis are enormous. What does Oil Peak mean for North America? As energy prices skyrocket in the coming years, how will the populations of suburbia react to the collapse of their dream? Are today's suburbs destined to become the slums of tomorrow? And what can be done NOW, individually and collectively, to avoid The End of Suburbia ?

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly believable and informative -- a must see ..........2007-06-09

This film is a must see! As the other reviewers note, this film's basic premise is that we have about hit the "peak oil" point (see "Crude Awakening" for more depth on this point) at which worldwide oil "reserves" are so diminished that they are increasingly expensive to extract (and of lower quality -- we hit this point nationally twenty-five years ago). We have not come up with safe and viable energy alternatives and therefore energy is going to get progressively much, much more expensive. (My father grew up in a house, sixty years ago, that had solar water heating -- we just do not seem to be making or be interested in making much progress in sustainable energy production).

Since our way of life is based on cheap energy, the logical conclusion is that our way of life is going to have to change -- radically -- within the next twenty years or so. Suburbia and long commutes are going to be a inevitable casualty (i.e. sell now if you live there), along with inexpensive food from far away. The process of outer suburbia's becoming a slum has already begun here in South Florida. The end of cheap energy would also seem to signal the impending natural death of "globalization."

I think that somewhere in the back of our minds we all know that gas is not going to last forever, though we hope that the end will not be soon, and that we need to faster develop alternative sustainable energy. This film posits that the end is quite near and that we are entirely unprepared for it; then it brings the logical ramifications into jarring focus -- we are and have been enormously and foolishly improvident. I hope that we act on what seems to be indisputable information ...

3 out of 5 stars Valuable but flawed.......2007-05-27

American suburbia is unsustainable for much longer in its current form and this documentary makes that abundantly clear. However, it is counter-productive to portray suburbanites as silly, ignorant, wrong, as this DVD constantly does. The fact is that American suburban life is generally pleasant, and far more desirable than the alternatives of inner-city or rural life. That is why it has persisted and expanded for generations and will continue to do so for as long as possible. One can hardly blame us all for hanging on to the comforts of suburbia for as long as we possibly can.

Another criticism is that there is almost no mention of fossil fuel in the form of coal of which we have huge domestic reserves and from which we can make any product that currently comes from oil or natural gas - only at a much greater cost. Nuclear-powered electricity is also ignored. It seems the authors believe that the current popular environmental opposition to coal and nukes will persist when oil and gas run out or becomes prohibitely expensive - which is clearly ridiculous.

Nevertheless, the DVD is interesting, thought-provoking and educational. Unfortunately it seems unlikely to be seen by those that are not already interested or familiar with the subject.

3 out of 5 stars Important topic presented well, but a couple of massive flaws.......2007-04-22

The American way of life will disappear within the next lifetime as the era of cheap oil comes to an end. That is the message of the film The End of Suburbia, an award-winning 2004 documentary produced by Barry Silverthorn and written/directed by Toronto-based filmmaker Gregory Greene. The End of Suburbia features a cast of noted scientists and authors, whose commentaries are intercut with multimedia comprising 50 years of American history.

The film claims that Suburbia (a common term for America's suburban family housing) is "the greatest misallocation of resources in the history of the world," and declares that as the era of cheap fossil fuels comes to an end, Suburbia will likely disappear or degenerate into modern 21st Century slums.

The End of Suburbia is highly critical of post-WWII "prosperity" thinking, condemning the selling of an unsustainable American dream which has now laid the groundwork for a potential economic and social disaster. Americans today view homes and cars almost as entitlements, the film claims. Further, not only would people be reluctant to admit that such a way of life for every American is unsustainable and indulgent, but may react suspiciously, even violently, if forced to change. Other less cynical voices in the film, however, see the current predicament as another opportunity for humanity to develop new technologies and ways of living that meet the challenges of the time.

These contrasting opinions represent a major strength of the film. Though grim predictions are made about the end of America's modern, energy-guzzling lifestyle, cynical expert opinions are balanced, at least partially, by hopeful statements about human potential in the face of an enormous problem.

However, the cast and crew of The End of Suburbia deserve criticism in at least two areas. First, the film fails to address some vital information on the topic of fossil fuels. While focusing on oil and natural gas, the film says nothing about the state of coal development in the United States. When broad generalizations are made about the state of energy supply in an oil shortage, to avoid coal, which is responsible for much of the nation's electricity, seems too gross of an omission to let slide. Proper attention should have been given to how coal supplies may dwindle along with oil production, if such is the case, or mitigate certain effects of oil shortages from an everyday person's perspective, regardless of whether such honesty diminishes the film's shock value.

Secondly, the film makes a sloppy, weak and irresponsible attempt to tie fossil fuels to foreign policy, neo-conservatism and the war in Iraq. The End of Suburbia lays down serious accusations regarding the "neo-cons'" desire to dominate the world by controlling Middle Eastern oil, and this is the real reason why the US went to war in Iraq. The only support for such claims is that they are popular with the film's likely audience; no real evidence is given. These are serious accusations, yet they are treated like salt and pepper at a kitchen table: "Just throw them in; they'll spice up any meal." Accusations such as these, true or not, are no more useful than propaganda when thrown about carelessly and without support. From the standpoint of intellectual honesty, their use in this instance injures the film's credibility.

Nevertheless, The End of Suburbia raises an issue, however slanted, that is important for every American to give ear to. If the film is even partially correct about the impact a loss of cheap energy will have on America, those who have seen it coming will be better prepared to weather the economic and social storms that may follow. Finally, it may be that a return to smaller communities and simpler lives has advantages for societies, families and individuals that outweigh what might be lost.

1 out of 5 stars left wing porn.......2007-03-20

This Canadian movie has a hard time being taken seriously, since so many of the people interviewed move away from the subject of oil and work through their personal issues with the aesthetics and lifestyle of suburban living, SUV, wal-mart, k-mart, etc - quite a lot of screen time is spent on this issue rather than the supposed core subject of "peak oil."

This film, much like "An Inconvenient Truth" would have us all living in soviet style apartment blocs. That's a hard sale. Good luck with it.

I will never, ever support big oil and us auto manufacturers. It would be like cutting our own throats.

Description

"Quite a few directors share and reflect the youthful rebellion and pop culture of their own generation. Penelope Spheeris is unique in that she uses her counter-culture sympathies to explore the lives, music, and attitudes of the new younger generation. You can see this in her movies. After documenting the punk scene in THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION, she made SUBURBIA for me, in which she explored the world of alienated suburban teenagers, and later had a huge hit with WAYNE'S WORLD." -- Roger Corman~~When family problems and a sense of worthlessness overcome Evan, he finds escape with the orphans of a throwaway society. Calling themselves T.R. ("The Rejected"), these runaways hold on to one another like family, living in abandoned houses away from the society that despises them. SUBURBIA is THE punk rock movie, depicting with unbridled realism the lives, loves, and misfortunes of a discarded youth

I watched this movie when I was a teenager (oh- about 100 years ago). I loved it then for the music and the kids who were in it. They were the same kids I hung out with, only on the west coast. Living life with no rules or discipline. Not to mention Flea was in it- a good reason to buy any movie. I just purchased it for my own teenage daughter who loves it as much as I do. Times may change but kids never do.

5 out of 5 stars "Next time, we'll do more than rip somebody's clothes off!".......2007-03-13

Always remember, if you see a girl, don't rip her clothes off! Doing that will drive her crazy! I know this because I saw it on Suburbia.

In the beginning of the movie, some people at a club rip a dress of a girl. She was being stuck up, maybe because her dress was fancy. So, the people go, "Hey, let's rip her clothes off." Whoa, bad idea! The people are all laughing, like "Man, this is funny!" But having her clothes ripped off her body has driven the girl crazy and all she can do is stand there and cry and scream. She is crazy now all because her clothes got ripped off her body and she is totally naked!

Later on, this one guy and his friend are angry. They went to a strip club and they had to pay to see a naked girl. They go to the house where these people live, rip the clothes off one girl and put her in a sleeper hold, then yell at the kids. They have a gun, and their message is clear: Girls better get used to getting their clothes ripped off by stangers and not go crazy...or else POW! So what happens next? THAT girl goes crazy. Not only that, she is driven so crazy that she is dead. Like, "wait a minute, even that first girl who got her clothes ripped off DID NOT kill herself! Come on!" But it is true! That is what can happen if you rip the clothes of a girl! DO NOT DO IT! Unless you want to see a girl crazy and dead!

4 out of 5 stars The difference between a mohawk and a landshark.......2006-12-31

This movie relayed how things were, or at least how people wished they would be. The situations are more cartoony than real at times. The prom queen in the pit? Okay, I saw it happen once, but she didn't get her clothes ripped off, she was beaten up by skin chicks. I think those that are seeing the reflection of class society and Reaganomics would be the objects of scorn by the TR kids themselves. The soundtrack rules and I think it's the first of it's kind (before Tarrintino) to have audio bites from the film itself. I'm still looking for that single that Jack was listening to in his room, just by the way. I read the other reviews and wonder if these are the people that I grew up with. This movie makes me disparagingly nostalgic, sort of the way that I feel about Iraq or Afghanistan. Odd that one of the most quoted line is about war.

1 out of 5 stars I guess I'm the only one.......2006-12-19

A bunch of lowlifes rip the clothes off of a girl and she stands there naked screaming for minutes. All of the T.R. kids stand around and laugh at this naked girl screaming. The adult gets on the microphone and says "Hey you guys, leave that girl alone, or no punk rock music for you"! This scene was so unbelievably stupid! If a young girl got all of her clother ripped off and was standing in the middle of a public place crying and screaming, no adult would say to "leave her alone" and "knock it off you guys"! So after this moronic scene, we are supposed to like the T. R. kids? Why? Also the racism towards the kids' stepdad was not making me like these losers any more. Are punks supposed to hate black people? No! This is my review so please click on ther button that says this was not helpful. Then you will be cool and hardcore!

5 out of 5 stars My band was in this dang thing..........2006-10-27

Filming this was a lot of fun for us. I was the guy with the soup can around his neck like the hippie hitler from The Producers by Mel Brooks. So much of the story was simply taken from real stuff that had happened in early LA punk days. The whole story about crashing the funeral was about us all being thrown out of the cemetary while they were burying our friend Kristie who'd overdosed on loads. The squats, the rip-offs, the broken homes--Penelope got most of that stuff right. Bummer that they did a pan and scan. Cheapass R. Corman.

One last funny bit--I was using Mike (TSOL)'s amp but some kid knocked it off the top of the stack so we never got a second take that would've shown more than just Stevo. And that's why you can't hear any bass during TSOL's set. The amp was putting out about 20% after the tumble.

This popular BBC series takes elements of the best American police procedurals and puts them in a sparkling British blender; the result is a sexy, intoxicating brew to be appreciated by all crime-show fans. Our two young heroines, Ash (Caroline Catz) and Scribbs (Lisa Faulkner), are terminally single, hip, hard-working, wry, and fearless. Think of Prime Suspect-meets-Law & Order, starring, say, Veronica Mars and L&O: SVU's Olivia Benson. The show is set in posh Middleford, England, a leafy town where the murders are every bit as gritty as in the big city. Ash's take on the appeal of the suburbs: "The effortless way it all works--deceit, murder, wife-swapping. And still the hedges get trimmed." There's as much sister-power camaraderie and wise-cracking as crime-solving, as our detectives fret about not dating (though they agree that "Tuesdays are brilliant, really, for being single"), secretly pine after their boss, and poke their noses quite forcefully into the business of the rich, who'd just as soon kill as cooperate. This boxed set contains six great episodes, with plotlines involving admissions to posh schools, the underworld of singles dating clubs, and lots and lots of money spent in quite the wrong ways. Crisp, well written, and jolly good. --A.T. Hurley

Description

Meet the sassiest, sexiest investigative team in the Middleford Criminal Investigative Department. A graduate of a posh girls' academy, Detective Inspector Kate "Ash" Ashurst (Caroline Catz) has a sharp, analytical mind. Her working-class partner, Detective Sergeant Emma "Scribbs" Scribbins (Lisa Faulkner), relies on her instincts. This unlikely pair uncovers the dark urges behind Middleford's placid, picture-perfect facade. "You know what I like about suburbia?" muses Ash to her partner. "The effortless way it all works—deceit, murder, wife-swapping. And still the hedges get trimmed." Back at headquarters, both unmarried women regard their handsome, bemused boss (Jeremy Sheffield, The Wedding Date) with a mixture of fear and infatuation.

Catz (Doc Martin, The Vice) and Faulkner (MI-5, Burn It) sparkle as bickering, bantering crime-solvers. For their hip, ironic humor and unerring radar for middle-class hypocrisy, you'll cheer Ash and Scribbs as the newest additions to the sisterhood of British sleuths.

Good to watch on a lazy summer afternoon, a bit on the dull side, the police women seem to be the only ones with a pulse. If folks living in the British suburbs are as self-cenetered as portrayed, I say let them kill each other and clean out the gene pool.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Crime-Fighting Duo.......2007-01-07

Detective Inspector Kate "Ash" Ashurst and Detective Sergeant Emma "Scribs" Scribbins are a homicide team operating in Middleford, a suburb of London. The murders they usually investigate involve sex and lots of money, with the occasional dive into revenge and jealousy. The six-episode first season is an absolute delight to watch, providing a murder, suspects, and a trail of tricky clues to keep armchair detectives guessing throughout.

Caroline Catz (NEW STREET LAW) plays Ash and Lisa Faulkner (SPOOKS, MI-5) plays Scribs. Both women are veterans of BBC detective and drama series, and their experience shows in their sleek handling of their roles. When you first see them on screen, you immediately buy into their characters.

Created by Nick Collins, the series is as much about the two women as it is the murders they solve. Ash and Scribs lament over the lack of good men left in the world, and the fact that cops don't usually fare well in relationships. Scribs is the more laidback, rule-ignoring one of the pair, while Ash is more image conscious and seems to have rules for everything.

The two characters and actresses are delightful to watch. During the first three episodes they grow and become more comfortable. By the time the fourth episode rolls around, I felt like they were old friends settling in to tell me of their further exploits.

The plots are intriguing and plotted well enough, though without the usual forensic evidence that most series seem to require these days. But it's the characters, the twists and turns of their private lives, thoughts, and interactions, that truly draw an audience in.

My wife and I love the BBC detective series. We've bought several sets (and really recommend FOYLE'S WAR in addition to these) and enjoy a good game of armchair detecting throughout the episodes. If you like fun characters and a mystery plot meaty enough to sink your teeth into, MURDER IN SUBURBIA is a great series to buy or rent.

I did not enjoy this. If you like 'Hercule Poirot', 'Miss Marple', 'Morse', 'Frost' or even 'Jonathan Creek', ... - then you won't like this shallow series. Maybe I am too old for this - but two goodlooking women are not quite enough to make a good mystery ...

This very loose update of Dostoyevsky will never gain the original's classic status, but on its own unseemly little terms it's an efficient genre flick. Trapped in a suburban Hell with an alcoholic stepfather (the always nasty Michael Ironside), suffering, molested high-schooler Rosanne (Monica Keena) begs her quarterback boyfriend (James DeBello) to help her bump him off. Things get complicated with the involvement of her weary mother (scrappy Ellen Barkin, still waiting for a decent role) and a sensitive, outsider classmate (Vincent Kartheiser). Larry Gross's script has Barkin's selfish character acting too much the idiot, though you won't hear a bad note from her or the rest of the appealing young cast (the invaluable Jeffrey Wright also has a nice bit as Barkin's lover). Even if director Rob Schmidt has too much of an MTV sensibility (showy cuts, booming soundtrack, etc.) and indulges himself with the gruesome murder, his glossy sensitivity to teen trauma redeems some of the pulp. The film can be seen in widescreen on DVD, as well as heard in French and Spanish. --Steve Wiecking

Description

This contemporary urban fable, loosely based on Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, is a gripping and provocative account of a young woman's attempt to permanently end the advances of her abusive stepfather. Starring Monica Keena ("Dawson's Creek"), Vincent Kartheiser (Another Day In Paradise) and James DeBello (American Pie), along with veterans Ellen Barkin (Drop Dead Gorgeous) and Michael Ironside (The Perfect Storm), Crime + Punishment in Suburbia is a deeply affecting and utterly disturbing tale of betrayal and redemption. Rosanne (Keena) is a cheerleader who dates a football player (DeBello) and gets drunk at parties. But she's also akiller. She convinces her boyfriend to sneak out of a pep rally for a date with destiny, revenge and the brutal murder of her abusive stepfather. But once she's gotten away with murder, Rosanne is shocked to learn that her mother's untimely arrival at the scene of the crime has put her behind bars! Now Rosanne must struggle with her inner demons. Can she do the right thing or will her Mom take the fall for Rosanne's vicious crime?

3 out of 5 stars Nothing special.......2005-02-26

This particular story could be turned into a breath-taking film with the right director. Too much is held back, and the film seemed all too typical. The director does not give a true, gritty, raw look into the troubled life this young girl led, and the story that unfolded. On the bright side, Vincent Karthieser is brilliant, and hes about the only one. Though there is nothing that makes this film stand out as great, it is entertaining, and will keep your attention.

Overall, its worth watching. A decent film I suppose. But it wont be one for the ages. It wont be one that will leave you "shocked" or "stunned". For a true gritty look into the troubled lives of adolesence with a slightly similar story...A movie that will really leave you stunned, watch 'Bully' instead.

3 out of 5 stars Quite an enigma.......2004-07-20

There's no better way to put it, this film is an enigma, at least for me. At times it can be laughable because of how serious it takes itself and at other moments you get drawn into the obsessive tone of the film. It's hard to categorize this film when it simply wants to enjoy being anonymous and ellusive. The film would probably be a good cult movie if only it had a cult following. Though it could never live up to the competitors, including Donnie Darko (which had a better script, actors, and director).

Though being a very loose adaptation of the classic novel, it might draw people to enquire about the novel. I would hope that would be one of the outcomes of people viewing this film.

But if you're looking for a dark teen film watch Donnie Darko instead.

2 out of 5 stars "Crime + Punishment" DVD Review.......2004-06-02

Rob Schmidt's modern day take on Dostoyevsky is a promising film that is so drowned in glossy imagery and bleak characters that it never seems to generate the type of interest in story-telling that it should. Monica Keena is the beautiful head cheerleader who seems to have the perfect life but in reality is trapped in a suburban nightmare. Vincent Kartheiser ("Another Day In Paradise") is the token bright but misunderstood outcast who lusts for Keena but can't find a way to her heart. When she murders her abusive stepfather with the help of her jock boyfriend, the evidence ends up pointing to her mother. This leads to a cycle of events that never seem to be captured with the level of drama or intesity that you'd expect. "Crime + Punishment" is as dark and devoid of energy as Larry Clark's "Kids" or Darren Aronofsky's "Requeim For A Dream" but it doesn't stand out the way they did. There are some solid perfomances from Keena and the always-dependable Michael Ironside as her drunken stepdad but none of the characters ever seem to stand out. While the story bares a passing resemblance to "American Beauty" in some areas, Schmidt never seems to move past his love for visual flare and give us any type of intriguing character moments. Keena's closing narrative makes for a good way to end the film but it seems like a case of "too little, too late" in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Destined for Greatness!!.......2004-04-18

And on the eighth day, God said, "let there be 'Crime + Punishment in Suburbia,'" and it was so. And He saw that it was TOTALLY SWEET!! Let me tell you why this movie is quite simply one of the most face-slapping-in-a-good-way chefs d'œuvre* ever created. First, Ellen Barkin, Michael Ironside, AND Jeffrey Wright in the same movie?! These three are the Lisa Leslie, Kobe Bryant, and Shaquille O'Neal of the acting world, respectively. There's just no way to go wrong when you've got a cast like that. But even this triumvirate of talent cannot alone account for this movie's astonishing success. Writer Larry Gross deserves a double high-five for the addition of C+P to the canon. Larry, the originator of the popular catchphrase "Don't touch me unless you love me!," can certainly touch me whether he loves me or not! C+P's is the hippest, smartest script this reviewer has had the pleasure of experiencing. But it doesn't take smarts like Mr. Gross's to realize that Crime + Punishment = AN INSTANT CLASSIC! The question is not whether this movie will change the way we think about cinematography, but when.

*alternatively, Works of Genius

5 out of 5 stars The best "Teen" movie yet........2004-03-31

Some reviewers say this movie is a teen movie. It isn't. Some people say it's based on Crime and Punishment. It's not.

"Crime and Punishment in Suburbia" is a excellent film about being misunderstood. Vincent Kartheiser's portrayal of Vincent is truly excellent and very believable because we've all gone through our cynical goth phase at some point in our lives. I really can understand and identify with the silent anger and cynicism that he feels as he deals with the young woman that he loves and the other people around her. The writers, actors and the director of Crime and Punishment in Suburbia have really tapped into the angst of teenage/young adult angst and created a beautiful film that truly deserved more praise. Let's hope it grows as a cult classic over the years.

1 out of 5 stars A TRUE BOMB!!!!.......2005-12-12

If this had a rating of less than one star, I'd give it. This is a HUGE waste of money, there is no Green Day interviews, no performances, just a bunch of people talking about Green Day. A 12 year old kid could have made a better DVD. Don't buy this, buy Bullet in a Bible instead. I wish I had read the reviews before I wasted my money.

1 out of 5 stars Suburbia Paradise..........2005-09-20

First of all I would like to say I'm not Karen Loyola I'm her 15 year old daugther... (In other words I'm bored so I wrote this)

I am a huge fan of Green Day but I have to say this sucked. Like everyone said it's like wrotten milk in a fancy cup of glass. The guys who made this are so lazy they didn't even remove the pogo paradise logo or add American Idiot to the library... I got ticked off at the cover it makes you think there are a lot of interviews with band and the truth is there's only like less than 5 minutes. The idiot who made this also put some crappy non-Green Day music...

Don't buy this unless you are a new big fan of Green Day, (and are willing to see something that is not 100% accurate) save your money for the new dvd. Anyways like they mentioned before Green Day Authority has better stuff. If you want some real documental stuff for free see vh1's driven-Green Day, cool band interviews on 100% on fuse and live perfomances and interviews on Storytellers ( <-My personal favorite). Fuse has a lot of cool GD stuff including the making of Boulevard of Broken Dreams and American Idiot just go to Green Day Authority and check the GD on t.v.

There ya go you just saved about 16 bucks...

I don't know if it is mentioned but there's this guy who says Green Day is for all the freaks and misfits or something like that... It's like dude you are making a GD dvd... Who do you think see it reggae fans? The guy's not even punk... Maybe if he was it would be funny but it's not. Idiot...

1 out of 5 stars NOTE: UNAUTHORIZED.......2005-08-22

This is Not Authorized by Green Day, and it's also a repeat of Pogo Paradise like everyone else who reviewed this piece of crap said.

1 out of 5 stars If you are a true Green Day fan, fanatic or anything, dont waste your money!!.......2005-07-23

As like everyone else, i was super excited about this DVD. i got the express shipping and everything. All it is, is POGO PARADISE, an older DVD which sucked ass, which most of the information isnt ever 100% correct. It was such a dissapointment, and a huge let down. I wanted to cry when the title of the movie started and said POGO PARADISE. the only good thing about this DVD was the cover artwork. that was it. !!!!FORTUNATELY!!!! GREEN DAY will be releasing an AUTHORIZED dvd of their LIVE SOLD OUT SHOW at the milton keynes arena from europe. From the American Idiot tour... Im very excited, and i know for a fact it wont be a dissapointing DVD. www.greenday.net has small info on it.
DONT BUY THIS HISTORY OF GREEN DAY... horrible!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia.......2006-05-24

Suburibia is where most of us live, but who knew that it is such a new phenomena? These films are wonderful simply for the nostalgia value alone. Of course the cities were really bad years ago, but most people did not want to move out into the country. Therefore the burbs were created and had to be explained to people. You get to see women fascinated by the idea of dishwashers and coffee makers. I laughed at a lot of the sillier moments and had a great time watching all of the movies in the package.

"I was moved by the pathetic living conditions in Philadelphia, which are depicted so well in the film 'A place To Live'. Made me glad I wasn't born there at the time. The script for this film - and the others too - is written by people with a lot of insight. I enjoyed watching the delight on people's faces when they listen to the radio in one of the clips."

"I must thank all the people who made informative documentaries and also those who preserved them on easy to access DVDs. It was amazing to see how well organized the city of New York has always been. Trains, buses, taxis, ferries, the film does not leave anything out does it? It is not surprising that millions of people call New York home. I love my city and this little clip explains why I am proud to be a New Yorker."

Description

Since World War II, North Americans have invested much of their wealth in Suburbs - residential districts located on the outskirts of cities. Viewing this DVD is a delightful experience for those wishing to travel down memory lane to the suburbs in the 40s and 50s or those who simply wish to share the delights of modernization and its impact on life during this period.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, But Educational.......2006-05-22

This is the second DVD in the Suburbia series that I've ordered and its much less serious than the first one, but it is still very fun. The main premise is the same - the governement was trying to find ways to convince people in the 1950s to move out of the cities and get mortages to live in the new suburbia. This time around, however, the emphasis is on the gadgets and stuff that new homes would have. For example, they actually have to explain to people what a dishwasher is! It's very campy, but also taught me a good deal about things I used to take for granted.

Description

Clean, spacious, modern, accommodating, progressive and friendly - this is how the cities showcased in the first part of these unique DVDs wish to be remembered. This collection of vintage films presents an interesting look at the '50s and '60s - a significant period in the history of cities in the making. You will see some very interesting clips about Doylestown, Levittown, Redwood, Detroit and New York in this context. The tone throughout is a promotional one as if the cities are inviting people to come and live there. The other message that comes through clearly is that we are proud of our city. Many of the clips are characterized by good photography and intelligent narration with good quality audio.

The films on Rochester and Detroit are especially well made with the camera focusing on several attractions the cities offer - good people, good amenities, some fabulous shopping centers and glorious surroundings. In striking contrast, the clips entitled "No Time for Ugliness" dwell on the unfortunate result of rapid modernization - unplanned buildings, hoardings, junk yards, traffic, polluted rivers and litter that mar the city's face. By the mid '60s, urban sprawl was popping its ugly head up in many of America's cities and you couldn't help but notice it.

The use of tinted films and subdued narration give the clips a foreboding effect that accentuates the message - our cities have become ugly. This was an America that needed an awakening, and I believe these clips did serve as eye-openers.

5 out of 5 stars Levitttown History. .......2006-07-17

My family grew up in Levittown so I was interested in this disk to learn m ore about where my parents grew up. There are many other interesting clips about suburbia in the 1950s on this set, but for me the film that explains the history of and how Levittown was sold is by far the most intersting. Nobody lived in these kinds of communities back then, so they really had to sell people on them and by doing so change an entire way of American life?

5 out of 5 stars Selling The Suburbs.......2006-05-05

It's funny to think that there was a time when almost everyone lived in cities and the suburbs did not exist yet. Yet, aparently in the 1940s and 1950s you had to choose between living in a city or on a farm.

That's the message here in these films that actually had to explain to people what a suburb was. Teh whole gimic here in these ads is to convince people that they will get killed if they stay in the city but will have a good life if they just buy a house in a development.

The lengths these ads go to to sell suburbia is incredible when you consider that most people want to live there now.

I had no idea until I saw this film that Levitown was a created community.
