Based on a novel by James Michener, Sayonara earned a fistful of OscarĀ® nominations (including Best Picture, Director, and Actor) in 1957 and wound up winning statuettes for supporting actors Red Buttons and Miyoshi Umeki. Marlon Brando plays a Korean War fighter pilot, the son of a general, reassigned to Japan, where fraternization with local women is taboo. After breaking off his engagement to another general's daughter, he finds himself falling for a Japanese entertainer (Miiko Taka), then struggling with his own bias. Subplots deal with other servicemen (played by Buttons and James Garner) who also fall for Japanese women. Directed by Joshua Logan from a script by Paul Osborn, the film takes a then-daring look at prejudice as well as post-war racial bias against the Japanese. Brando's Southern accent makes him sound like Matthew McConaughey, while Buttons is actually touching as tough, tender American struggling against racism. --Marshall Fine

Customer Reviews:
Fun Brando film.......2007-05-16
This is a rather silly story line, and Brando is really miscast but as always he is fun to watch. Red Buttons gives an excellent performance as a soldier married to a Japanese woman during the occupation. Still an interesting performance from Brando.
A well padded, slow moving 1950's melodrama.......2007-03-12
Unfortunately, this movie will give future generations absolutely no clue as to why Marlon Brando was considered one of the finest actors of his day. Every one of his tics and affectations are on display; the shambling slouch, the beetle browed grimace, the inexplicable adoption of a disfiguring and ludicrous accent (southern this time). All of which rendered him totally unbelievable as a spit and polish West Point graduate. What was he thinking? Why did the director let him get away with it?
Red Buttons and Miyoshi Umeki carry the acting honors in this one, and James Garner too, who made me wish he had been given the leading role instead.
What I appreciate most about this moive, however, was the way it endeavored to introduce Western audiences to the different forms of Japanese theatre. For that, I will even forgive it the rather alarming sight of Ricardo Montelban as a Japanese Kabuki actor. By the way, the all girl revue in the picture is based on the very famous and still extant Takarazuka All-Girl Revue.
An Excellent Movie!.......2007-01-22
Marlon Brando and Red Buttons are at their best in this movie! This is a great love story!
old movies are better.......2006-12-19
I've seen this movie 3 times in the last few years, and still break down crying at 2 scenes, the scene where kelly's japanese wife was going to get her eyes surgically altered to look american and when marlon finds kelly and his wife dead from suicide, gets me every time. LIked it a lot, a little too long and I agree could use some extra editing, but marlon's accent didn't bother me as much as some of the reviewers have said. I just loved red buttons and miyosha umeki ( i think that's spelled right), they really made the movie as far as i'm concerned.
the best love story ever........2006-11-09
If you are inlove or want to be inlove or like to see a love story you
must see this movie.

In the 22nd Century, the United Earth Federation has begun colonizing neighboring planets in the solar system. While attempting to extract water from Mars' polar ice caps, a UEF science team uncovers ancient carvings that describe the crash of an alien spacecraft on the planet Jupiter several millennia ago. The discovery postpones the initial phase of the Jupiter Solarization Project, a plan to transform the gas giant into a second sun, providing both additional solar energy for Earth and making the outer worlds fit for colonization. From Minerva Station in the orbit of Jupiter, Dr. Eiji Honda (Tomokazu Miura, Survive Style 5+, Taste of Tea) is dispatched to ensure that alien life does not exist on Jupiter before the planned mission is to commence.
When scientists discover that a black hole is approaching the solar system, Earth's only hope is to abandon the Solarization Project and instead send Jupiter into the black hole. Dr. Honda must race to complete the new mission and save Earth before time runs out!
Toho decided in the early 80's to give Japan a space epic of their own to compete with the upcoming sequel to Stanley Kubrick's classic "2001", titled "2010". The result was "Sayonara Jupiter" (aka "Bye-Bye Jupiter"). Directed by Koji Hashimoto (Godzilla 1985, Ghidrah, Latitude Zero) and featuring special effects by Koichi Kawakita (Gunhed, King Kong VS Godzilla), Sayonara Jupiter contains some of the greatest special effects ever produced in the 1980s!

As Satoshi Kon's intriguing and disturbing urban fantasy builds to its climax, the rumors about the murderous Li'l Slugger and the popularity of the cute little dog character Maromi spiral out of control. Gorged on media hype, Li'l Slugger and Maromi threaten to engulf Tokyo. The filmmakers evoke various anime genres and visual styles in these episodes: Ikeda enters a two-dimensional, idealized version of the past; Maniwa sees himself as the righteous hero of a supernatural adventure, dispensing justice and vengeance. Maromi becomes the star of his own TV series, and Li'l Slugger appears as a demon. As he did in the features Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress, Kon skillfully blurs the boundaries between reality and fantasy: neither the characters nor the viewer can be certain what exists and what is the product of a deranged imagination. At a time when critics and filmmakers complain that anime has settled into formulae, Paranoia Agent stands out as a work of unsettling originality. (Rated 16 and older: violence, tobacco and alcohol use) --Charles Solomon
Description
The Lil's Slugger epidemic runs rampant in Tokyo while Umaniwa researches Tsukiko's childhood and discovers the disturbing origins of Maromi! However, before he can do anything, he is attacked by a giant Lil' Slugger! Soon the mass psychosis threatens to destroy the city, but does Tsukiko hold the key to salvation?
Customer Reviews:
Very Cool,.......2005-08-29
I really love Paranoia Agent, it's a great anime. I actually think it's the best anime of the year. But whats such a shame is that it probably will never get recognized. I know it's on cartoon network but it never really seemed to gain much popularity which is too bad considering how great it is. It deserves more. The ending to the series was also really cool.
Opening Credits Do It All.......2005-08-23
`Paranoia Agent' defies most of conventional anime. No giant robots, big guns, or girls with blue hair. It takes place in present day Tokyo and revolves around the lives of everyday workers. It is also unique for being an anthology.
`Paranoia Agent' is not based around the conflict of heroes and villains. It depends mostly on style. The opening credits are arguably the most memorable in anime history. We see our many characters standing in the midst of a disaster, flood, fire, earthquake, nuclear bombing. However they are all laughing uncontrollably in an insane manner, as to make us think that these characters may have come to except the horror of their lives.
The plot: Unlike most anime series `Paranoia Agent' is an anthology, each episode seems to exist on its own, in that we are introduced to new characters whose stories begin and end with that episode, an anthology. The stories are all related in the sense that each of our characters lives in modern day Tokyo and is having trouble in life, generally work related. They all end up being attacked by boy in roller blades, Little Slugger.
The stories are very entertaining in a dark comedy way, from a sleazy reporter who owes money to the mob, a school girl by day and prostitute by night, an anime production team that's behind schedule, friends that keep failing in their many attempts to commit suicide. Little Slugger attacks them all.
As the show progresses, so does Little Slugger. It becomes quite obvious that he is super natural. It also becomes quite obvious that `Paranoia Agent' has absolutely no intention of wrapping things up or ever explaining the truth about Little Slugger or any of the bizarre events. And it doesn't.
I couldn't see this series going on any longer and it's nice they ended it after 13 episodes allowing us to remember it fondly.
`Paranoia Agent' works mostly because of its style. The animation and directing are great. It also works because of its very entertaining stories, as short as they might be.
Brillant Anime That is Misunderstood.......2005-05-26
I have collected the whole PA series and I have to say it is one of the most ground breaking animes out there right now this Volume was excellent the series ended somewhat how I expected but there was so much to follow until the very end I love this show and I hope it does well when they broadcast it here in America though your average tv viewer might not understand everything it takes multiple viewing to fully understand Paranoia Agent but Man Is It Worth It.
Promise and premise fulfilled.......2005-05-17
Satoshi Kon's 13 episode series comes to a satisfactory conclusion, weaving the final story from several characters introduced in the first few episodes. Along the way, Kon gives at least a passing node to most of the major characters.
How you view the series overall will depend on your taste and point of view. What appears to some as meandering and unfocussed can appear to others as a real tour de force. The series comprises a variety of animation styles and even narrative styles. It was always a bit of a hodge-podge: Kon said at the start that he wanted to use a number of ideas that had come up during his feature films but that did not fit into the narratives. The series form gave him a great opportunity, as some episodes seem to digress, illustrating a point rather than moving the overall narrative forward. Nevertheless all the stories carry the common thread, and in the final analysis the work stands as a unified whole. The overall form becomes one of a themed anthology.
That being said, the end of the series on this volume is strong. Once I started watching, it was hard to stop. The storytelling is compelling, and the animation was well done in a variety of styles, the two-dimensional world being particularly enjoyable. There's intelligently-written action along with moments of fear, humor and pathos. The commentary track by creator-director Kon, along with the screenwriter and producer, is frosting on the cake. Overall, this disk and this series demonstrate again why Kon is one of the greatest animators out there.
Thank you Satoshi Kohn, its been a wonderful ride.......2005-05-15
Since december, paranoia agent has had me wrapped around the tightly woven story. Ive seen all the events and tragedys in this series. Now, it is finnaly at an end. In the last disk, we wrap up the story, and find out the true nature of lil slugger. This disk might not be as creepy or disturbing as the others, but acomplishes its task at hand remarkably. This is a great finish. Some people might not understand what he was trying to say, but search deep and the answer is clear. A grwat feature on this dvd is the commentary by creator Satoshi Kohn. I recomend seeing the other disks of the series first, but dont to get the final masterpiece of this epic series.
Thank you Satoshi Kohn, its been a wonderful ride

Interesting series. Almost everyday life adventure........2003-02-17
My earlier reviews are about the same. I see no difference between the series 1-4. Except the Alien starts to show respect for others #4. And the Alien ship falls apart.
Whoa.. This is getting: Good; Deep; Interesting; (Pick one!).......2002-01-21
I bought the first DVD in this series on a whim and I am glad I did. This series started out innocently enough as a silly quirky little show, portraying the interactions of a poor college cram student and her troublemaking, selfish, freeloading alien "roomate". Needless to say this was very different from most other animes. I really liked the slower pace and the more realistic portrayal of everyday Japanese life, as opposed to the sword-swinging, gun-toting, psi-battle, epic-quest-taking approach all the while hurling goofy, physical, large-sweatdrop jokes a mile a minute that most animes are known for. Yet despite its difference, NieA under 7 still seemed on the silly, jokey side, and yet somewhat hard to grasp. You had no idea where this little show was trying to take you, that is. Was this just some docu-drama about interactions between two people who hardly belong together in the first place? Was there going to be some ancient giant space sea-turtle that would appear and NieA would find ultra-special elemental powers inside herself in order to battle it? Or was this just some life lesson teaching you not to be selfish, and no matter how hard things are, always be a nice person?? Well, at any rate, it was very different. And at the end of the first DVD you're left with this unusual urge to see more of this different, slow paced, more realistic look into these, pretty much normal, lifestyles. That is, of course, if you're not ready to strangle NieA because of her blatant selfishness.
If you bought Disc 2 and got to the end of it, surely you're somewhat clenched. The end of Disc 2 takes this casual, silly, and even downright funny series and slams it with some real seriousness! Seemingly out of nowhere things get really deep and you see the personal inner struggles of our main characters. Mayuko's lashing out at NieA really shows that there is some real hurt inside, and growing tension between the two externally. And what really sells it is the authenticity of the actions and reactions. Yes, by now the series is really starting to grow on you and you can almost even see yourself in the characters.
If you went on to buy Disc 3 and watched it, there is now absolutely no doubt at all, ever, that you are now completely hooked on the series and, like myself, are definitely preparing to buy Disc 4 (probably the final disc in the series) to see how things end up! Wow, what drama! Mayuko is really struggling here, and if that's not all, selfish little NieA is becomming a bit concerned about her, for once! She is also struggling herself because of the voices she's hearing from the mothership. This all showcases what makes this whole series so great! Metamorphasis. The series starts out silly and lighthearted, firmly establishing its characters and creating realistic interactions between them. The "rules", so to speak, are established. And then suddenly, out of nowhere, things change; getting a little darker, and deeper. The "rules", so to speak, are broken, and characters powerfully display true genuine emotional growth, highly unusual in an anime. It still manages to throw a gag in once in a while to sort of break up the silence and those gags usually wind up being quite funny. You really start to see and appreciate the intelligence and masterminding behind this series here which, at first, sold itself short; and are left really wanting to see how things end up! 90 foot tall ion-flux core super-robots generally don't care about shows like this, but still I cannot wait for Disc 4! =P
[SUPERMECHA]
Interesting... seriousness abounds.......2001-12-21
I don't know about any one else, but this series has me hooked! I purchased the first one because it was the same designer as the "Lain" series, but this one caught my attention better. Frankly, it is a random comedy that has brilliant moments of "Monty Python-esque" humor. Not the WHOLE thing, mind, but there are always moments.
This volume is very serious in comparison to the other two, although perhaps that's what makes the funny so funny; the mood of this series tends to be very depressing, with everyone having money problems, and no one being able to escape the centrifugal force of their present life. Oy veh, am I familiar with that!
Here, NieA is forced to be very serious because no one believes her that the Mother Ship is talking to her. This is such a big event, she even manages to think about Mayuko for once. Also, Genzo makes another appearance and reminds Mayuko of her childhood habit of telling stories, possibly derailing her later plans. I mean, she has NO idea what she wants to do.
I suspect that this series is about to wind up pretty quickly now. NieA's hearing the Mother Ship has some nasty connotations, and the bathhouse's owner looks like she's going to have to fold. Mayuko may even realize to what degree Genzo likes her (although I'm not counting on it). Heck, I'm not sure, which is part of the charm. I suppose I'll have to wait and see...
NieA and Mayuko are the everymen of the new age.......2001-12-14
You could tell something was coming when NieA slyly challenged Mayuko to try life as an Under 7 Alien. The petulance, the flakiness was absolutely gone from her voice. You could hear a pin drop in the time that Mayuko considered the offer. Clearly, somewhere deep inside Mayuko, this prospect caused something to snap.
I could barely stand to turn off the DVD player. I had to try to find some hint of what is coming.
Don't get me wrong, the same plodding pace marks this disc just like the others, the same lame jokes, the same "Domestic Poor Animation." But, this series has gripped me. I don't know if I'll make it till February to see what happens next.

Based on a novel by James Michener, Sayonara earned a fistful of Oscar® nominations (including Best Picture, Director, and Actor) in 1957 and wound up winning statuettes for supporting actors Red Buttons and Miyoshi Umeki.
