Fans of the testudinate pace and art-house vibe of writer-director Sally Potter's other works (Orlando, The Tango Lesson) will likely enjoy The Man Who Cried. Fegele (Christina Ricci) is a Russian Jew separated from her father as a child. Raised as "Susie" by an English family, she makes her way to Paris, where although the city's multiculturalism is vibrant, the Nazis are already on the rise and the secret of her origin becomes increasingly dangerous. The cast of The Man Who Cried is excellent; Cate Blanchett, Johnny Depp, John Turturro, and Harry Dean Stanton all do fine jobs in what could have easily degenerated into an accentfest. Depp and Ricci do very well with minimal dialogue--both go through the entire movie almost without speaking. The film moves at a leisurely pace and is beautifully shot. Not a film to show to a roomful of action movie fans, but it's well suited to people who like their films a little more European in flavor. --Ali Davis

3 out of 5 stars ok, but should have just rented it.......2007-05-14

If you're buying this because you're a Johnny Depp fan I recommend renting it first. It's set in the time of the jewish persecution and WWII. Personally I'm a bit tired of this and it is all repetative for me. This film was interesting in that it had a dark pensiveness and mystery about it, but still not worth purchasing. Just another sad story of persecution. The acting was good and there was an element of wonder, and the ending was happy though bitter sweet.

3 out of 5 stars Where is the story?.......2007-05-01

Dress Johnny Depp as a Gypsy and put him on a poster and I would have been happy. That was the highlight of this movie for me. This incredible cast is amazingly wasted. How on earth can a movie like this lack a story or any kind of meaningful point? Somehow, it does.

3 out of 5 stars Really a 3 and a half star movie........2007-04-08

"The Man Who Cried" starts, literally, from a child's point of view, and even as it pulls back to follow her journey to young adulthood, it never loses the child's sense of life's mystery and enigma. The first few minutes of the movie establish, with very few words and notable compression, the central events, beginning in the late 1920s, of a little Russian Jewish girl's early life, her separation from her father (who emigrates to America) and the violent circumstances under which she leaves her home and arrives in England. The little girl who started life as Fegele finds herself with a new name, Suzie, in an alien world where the only familiar sight is the gypsies who pass by her school. This, a photograph of her father, and the memory of the songs he sang are all that is left to her of her old life. The desire to reach America to find her father never leaves her.

Suzie (played as an adult by Christina Ricci) matures into a pretty girl with a lovely voice who leaves England to become a showgirl in Paris, where she meets Lola (Cate Blanchett), a Russian emigree, Dante (John Turturro), an Italian tenor, and most important, Cesar (Johnny Depp), a Gypsy horseman whose center is as still as hers. The lives of these characters interweave as the Germans approach, then occupy Paris. Suzie must decide whether to use the ticket Lola has given her to reach America, or to stay in occupied Paris.

The first minutes of this film are as good as any I've ever seen. (Claudia Lander-Duke, who plays Fegele/Suzie as a child, is particularly moving.) Though I don't think the movie subsequently ever again quite equals these moments (or that the plot quite supports itself toward the end), the haunting, almost dreamlike, atmosphere created by the wonderful photography, and the central relationship of Suzie and Cesar make the film well worth watching.

2 out of 5 stars Kinda lame.......2007-03-13

There is something missing in this movie. I dunno, I just don't care about these people. I really want to, but I just don't connect with them. It's a beautiful movie, I must give it that.

5 out of 5 stars Sad and mesmerizing.......2007-03-04

Christina Ricci is so believable as a lost Russian Jewish girl misplace in England where she is adopted by a Christian family who is in my opinion sadistic and vile. Cate Blanchett is excellent as a blonde show girl who falls in love with a man (John Turturo) who sees Mussolini as the Italians savior, and then leaves him because her heritage makes her a prime target for the Nazi's who are coming to power.

Johnny Depp, is seems can play any part well. He speaks little but his expressions speak volumes which for me is a sign of a great actor. I found myself feeling like a person across the room drawn into his presence.

The story line is wonderful for those of us who appreciate history and the lessons it has to teach about evil and how no matter how hard we may believe that the evil we see elsewhere can never come to our land, it can.

The music is mesmerizing as is the cinematography. Yes, its slow at times, but I appreciated this because it added some intellectual magic to the movie. Its a terribly sad movie, with an ending that is different. But feeling sadness isn't all bad.

wonderful set of dvds. my mum enjoyed them immensley .would recommend to anyone to buy this set good value.

5 out of 5 stars Set 2 is a great set with great films.......2007-01-06

I've seen all the movies in this set except for the man who cried, I haven't gotten to watch that one yet. I started watching Catherine Cookson films as a teenager because my grandma watched them all the time. I fell in love with them. As depressing as her films can be (it seems there is always a tragedy in her films) the ending is always good. In this set the Gambling Man is my favorite, I suggest you watch it first. I also own set 1. Set 1 has The Wingless Bird, The Fifteen Streets, The Moth, and the Rag Nymph. Also a wonderful set to add to your collection. I bought The Girl separately. There are two more movies that I bought that are sold as a set and they are The Black Velvet Gown and The Black Candle. Both of those movies are wonderful, especially the Black Velvet Gown. It is a wonderful love story. These films are great on DVD, the picture is nice and clear and the sound is really good. A good buy!

5 out of 5 stars C. Cookson Collection - Set 2.......2007-01-05

I've enjoyed Catherine Cookson books and now I can doubly enjoy them on DVD's with actors I enjoy watching. The stories have a little bit of all kinds of life in them and I don't tire of them.

      5 out of 5 stars Okay I'm a Johnny Fan.......2007-06-06

The Brave is important to see if you are a Johnny Fan. It is heartbreaking in that he is not a director. At all. Sorry folks, Johnny can't direct. At least not direct and act at the same time. Maybe if he'd done one or the other it would have been better but it just plain sucked. I want to kill myself when I say that because Johnny can do no wrong in my eyes and I'm glad he got to try it but he is an actor. The best. He can't direct. Very important to see Brando though. His last(?)performance, and as usual fantastic-favor for a friend. I spent two years wishing Johnny would redo this movie and re-release it. Now I've decided he just needs to forget it and never try that again. Besides that I found the portrayal of Native American life almost offensive. I've lived among them for most of my life and I didn't think he captured anythng really about them except maybe the dad splurging on his kids. But there are no Indians living in garbage dumps. That's for sure. And as for tract houses, they can all get one. The problem is who wants that?

5 out of 5 stars The Brave - A compelling depiction of devoir and sacrifice.......2007-04-04

This is a positively overwhelming depiction of bravery and tenderness. The quiet fear Johnny Depp expresses in the first trip to the warehouse is perfect. I was so tense at the warehouse scenes my stomach was in a knot. My whole body was tense the entire movie. Johnny Depp managed to produce a suspensful thriller with no loud noises, no crashing vehicles and very little gore. It's brilliant with a David Lynch-like quality, sprinkled with playfullness. Definitely buy and watch this, even if you're not a Johnny Depp groupie. And if you are a groupie, he's in almost every scene. I read a review which said this was a slow-moving picture. Those with this opinion must be jaded people with no empathy.

      2 out of 5 stars The Brave.......2007-02-17

Gack. Still, Johnny Depp with long hair does have a certain appeal. That was pretty much the only good thing about this movie.

5 out of 5 stars THE BRAVE is one of Depp's best movies. .......2006-12-13

These days when I watch a movie I find myself unable to suspend my disbelief and get into the story. What I mean is that I'm constantly aware that I'm watching a movie. This was a movie where I was able to loose myself in the story. I felt like I was really watching a man taking a desperate measure to save his family. In the film, Depp's character makes a deal to sell himself to some men who want to make him the star of their Snuff film. I felt myself being able to wonder what such a situation would be like as I watched Depp playing the character and I found myself actually hoping he would find a way out of his situation. Whether he got out of it or not I will not say as to do so would ruin the movie to an extent. WIth all the garbage that Hollywood produces it's a shame that a great film like this isn't released in the states. When I bought The Brave it came with another Depp movie called the PIANO II as part of a two pack. For me pursonally, the PIANO II was one of the biggest peices of crap I've seen in awhile but I got both movies for a price that I would have gladly paid for THE BRAVE DVD by itself.

Both countries never signed international copyright agreement and these discs are being distributed by organizations that wildly participate not only in movie piracy but also drugs and prostitution. 5 out of 5 stars I was persuaded to see this.......2001-11-21

Upon seeing Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root in Persuasion I thought I'd like to see them together again. This story is very different and the characters they portray are very different. It is a beautifully shot picture. The story of seeking a better life and love for his son and himself prompts Abel to leave a cruel wife after a love affair goes awry. As he and his son take off for a better life, they are meet with hardships and temptations, always hiding the truth. Abel enters into an unlawful marriage with Hilda (Amanda Root) who loves him, provides his son with a loving home....unfortunately Abel doesn't love her...he loves her beautiful sister Florrie(who eventually becomes his lover and mother of his child after 9 years of quietly bearing life with Hilda) There are troubles ahead for all as his first wife discovers his whereabouts...The story of deceit/truth, cruelty/love, revenge/forgiveness, and unfolding tenderness as each character faces the truth, weaknesses and cruelty within themselves makes for a very touching movie. Truly upon seeing Ciaran and Amanda in very different characters makes one appreciate their talents and skill in acting. I was touched by the movie and my uneasiness in seeing the two Persuasion actors in a whole new way helped me to love even more their ability to tell human stories in these two movies. All the actors involved were very good and the moral questions and tragedies that occur will stir you. The courage to see one's own errors in character and to take responsibilty for it with a deep sense of humility, forgiveness and empathy for others not only transforms Hilda, but helps Abel to forgive himself....the touching ending is quite moving. The music is wonderful...so simple and beautiful a perfect reminder of how one wishes life would be...but is not due to the complexity of the human mind and heart.

4 out of 5 stars Ciaran Hinds does it again.......2001-10-23

though it would seem that he is paired with Amanda Root (Persuasion) again... and in fact they do get married in this film, Hinds doesn't really heat up to his former sex appeal until the second half of the film. This is a twisted tail of the impossibility of a bad marriage and the impossibility of a man from a disadvantaged background taking care of his son and finding work during the 1930's in England. He uses his luck, but makes a deal with the devil. He is found out. Everyone is well cast and it is certainly a realistic story encased in the possibility of love and romance. Lovely settings.

      4 out of 5 stars robust near-epic.......2001-09-19

The most stunning feature of this film is the "opera singing" of John Turturro! The dubbing (and it HAD to be dubbing) was completely seamless -- and utterly magnificent in its presentation. This film is quite stylish and serves as a great vehicle for the talents of Christina Ricci, Turturro, Johnny Depp and Kate Bleanchett (among others!) The cinematography, sets, music and screenplay are unforgettably superb. This is one of the better films of recent years and is probably a must-see.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story. Great casting!.......2001-04-12

I bought this video because it stars two of my favorites: Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root. The entire cast is wonderful. Those who see the human condition as black or white will not enjoy this story. But, those who recognize shades of gray, look for hope in dark places, and see forgiveness as a great human virtue will feel sympathy and affection for "The Man Who Cried." The story is set during the Great Depression and World War II. A bad marriage, the need for love and affection, responsibility for a young son, and financial woes push Abel Mason into a series of questionable decisions. It makes one wonder...what would I have done?

      4 out of 5 stars unusual story.......1999-05-19

this movie is a little quirky, but engrossing because of the actors, who are excellent
