Editorial Review:
Amazon.com
Caught between the purest of intentions and unimaginative shortcuts to sentimentality, The Mighty is nevertheless rewarding enough to make it worth seeing. Kieran Culkin stars as Kevin, a terminally ill but spirited young boy who befriends a healthy but illiterate social outcast, Maxwell (Elden Henson). They realize that together they are a stronger, braver force than they are as individuals, and the various opportunities they have to confront persecutors and memories of their bad fathers are handled very effectively by director Peter Chelsom (a very original filmmaker who made the terrific Funny Bones). The curious adult casting includes Sharon Stone (a natural scene-stealer even when she doesn't intend it) as Kevin's saintly mother, and Gillian Anderson in a quite-unbelievable supporting role. Chelsom's lapses in judgment are not terribly significant (imaginary appearances by Camelot-era knights on horseback are the most annoying), though one could argue that a plot to kidnap one of the boys is a cheesy way to underscore the kids' redemptive loyalty to one another. Still, all in all, you can laugh and cry at this tale of rare friendship, and admire the sensitive performances by Chelsom's younger players. --Tom Keogh

wrong movie.......2007-06-27
The first two movies were great I loved the Mighty Duck movies but the third move was some old 50's movie when I played it I had to get another one and I had the same problem. I sent the movies back but have yet to get my money back.
No More Monkeys.......2007-06-23
I have seen and loved all three of these movies, so I didn't scroll down to read the reviews. I should have. First movie was great, second movie was great, the 3rd movie was packaged D3, the disc was labeled D3, but the movie was.....Monkeys Go Home. Sent it back for a replacement and the 3rd movie was again "Monkeys Go Home". So Monkeys go back.
Wish I would have read C Leonard's Review.......2007-06-07
If I would have read C. Leonard's review, I would have known to pass on this
series. Monkeys Go Home ruined this for me too. I gave it as a gift and was
amazed to receive a call telling me that Monkeys Go Home was in the Mighty
Ducks 3 movie case. Well, must be an accident, right?!? I sent the first set back and just received the replacement complete with the Monkeys Go Home movie in the third case!!!!
Save your money folks....this is not the place to buy a boxed set of Mighty
Duck movies!!
Great Movies, but WTF?!.......2007-06-02
I don't know what Disney's problem is, "Monkeys, Go Home" isn't part of the series, everyone should know that; so why did I get that movie in this set instead of D3? Are they idiots?? Or are they just trying to peddle their old crappy movies disguised as their good ones? and; IS IT REALLY THAT HARD TO BURN THE RIGHT MOVIE ON THE DVD?! It's a 5 Star set, but I rate it at 1 star because they were idiotic enough to burn the WRONG MOVIE ON MY DISC 3! WAKE UP DISNEY, AND THANKS FOR RUINING MY WEEKEND!
----Edit------
Replacement arrived today, same problem!

Great Movies, Great Price!.......2007-03-25
I purchased this DVD boxset in November and just now got around to watching them. I have been a long time fan of The Mighty Ducks movies and used to watch them all the time on TV and on VHS. I was happy they were on DVD for me to purchase. They came at a great price too...I believe I paid $20.99. That is awesome considering each movie retails at $10 to $14 each. As for the films themselves, all 3 are presented in their original aspect radio, 1.85:1 widescreen. I only gave this collection 3 stars as I am not a huge fan of D3: The Mighty Ducks. In my opinion, it's a sequel that never should've been made. It lacks the same magical formula that made the first 2 films so great. The movie feels rushed and it seems to push Joshua Jackson too much into the spotlight. He was never the lead star, Emilio Estevez was always the true star in my eyes. I recommend this boxset if you're a fan of the movies.

They skydive, they kickbox, they travel through space. Is there anything these crayon-colored teens can't do? The answer seems a resounding "no," until some construction workers unwittingly open a manhole cover and loose Ivan Ooze upon Angel Grove. Although incarcerated in his egglike tomb for 6,000 years, Ooze gets right to work at that world domination thing. First up: Strip those eager teens of their morphin uniforms and associated powers and send their leader Zordon to his crystalline deathbed. There's nothing to do but head for a distant planet to meet up with a bikini-clad warrior babe who imparts ancient wisdom and power. Meanwhile, Ooze has been turning parents into zombies who craft giant metallic insects--all the better to take over the world with. This 90-minute film features some cast changes from the Fox television series, as well as better special effects and extended fight scenes, which account for the PG rating. Parents must weigh in for themselves on the famous violent-influence-or-not question. Although, like anything else, what seemed violent in 1995 may seem a bit tame today. Ages 5 and up. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Awsome Movie!.......2007-04-10
First I saw "Turbo, A Power Rangers Movie" and I liked it, sort of. Then my Mom let me tape "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" and it was awsome. That Ivan Ooze guy was funny. Along with his other bad guys, Lord Zedd, Rita Repaulse, Goldar, and Mordant. And the fact the Ivan brings two giant machines of an ant, and a scurpion. Now the Rangers must defeat them and Ivan. YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS FILM!!!
Best of the PR.......2007-03-14
This is by far the best power ranger movie out there and the best of it's long running series. However the price isn't worth it. You can go to your local wal-mart and pick this up in the 5.50 bin (that's where I got mine) without the shipping and handling... plus it's there right then and now.
Great movie, or GREATEST MOVIE EVER!!!.......2007-03-02
I'm confused, does 1 star mean good or not??
A kids review written by adult for child on adult's sign-on(approved by adult).......2007-01-20
I liked the part in the movie when the pink ranger was battling the monsters in the construction site.
I feel this movie is great because I collect these items, but most of all this movie shows the best information I need.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers the movie.......2007-01-11
My oldest grandson watched all of the power rangers movies, so when his younger brother age 6 started enjoying them, I bought him this movie as a Christmas present this last year and he really loves it. He watches it more than anything else.

DONOVAN'S REEF
Acclaimed director John Ford and screen legend John Wayne team up for what would be their final collaboration in this boisterous, rowdy South Seas escapade. The Duke, Lee Marvin and Jack Warden play World War II navy buddies who have made the French Polynesian island of Haleakaloha their post-war paradise. Local headquarters is Donovan's Reef, Wayne's rough-and-tumble watering hole where bragging, brawling, and full-blown misbehavior are the order of the day. But destined to create more turmoil than any barroom fisticuffs is the sudden arrival of Elizabeth Allen, a straight-laced Boston blue blood. She's hoping to locate her long-estranged father (Warden), affirm that he is "not of good moral character," and then assume control of the family's shipping dynasty back home in the States. Suave, debonair Cesar Romero and a sarong-clad Dorothy Lamour add to the laughs - and mayhem - in this tropical comedy treat.
IN HARM'S WAY
In Harm's Way, based on James Bassett's novel Harm's Way, has enough plot in it for four movies or a good miniseries (when it was shown on network television in prime time, it was broken into two very full nights). On the morning of December 7, 1941, a heavy cruiser, commanded by Captain Rockwell Torrey (John Wayne), and the destroyer Cassidy, under acting commander Lieutenant (jg) William McConnell (Thomas Tryon), are two of a handful of ships that escape the destruction of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Under Torrey's command, the tiny fleet of a dozen ships carries out its orders to seek out and engage the enemy fleet. But lack of fuel and a daring maneuver (but tragic miscalculation) by Torrey causes his ship to be seriously damaged. He's relieved of command and assigned to a desk job routing convoys in the shakeup following the attack, and his exec and oldest friend, Commander Paul Eddington (Kirk Douglas), is reassigned after a brawl, the result of his anger after identifying the body of his wife (Barbara Bouchet) who was killed during the attack while cavorting with an Marine Corps officer. Torrey's shore assignment leads him to reestablish contact on a very hostile level with his estranged son, Ensign Jere Torrey (Brandon de Wilde), his estranged son from a long-ended marriage, who is also serving at Pearl Harbor; he also establishes a romantic relationship with Lt. Maggie Haines (Patricia Neal), a navy nurse; he also befriends Commander Egan Powell (Burgess Meredith), a special-intelligence officer. Through his son's boasting during their bitter first meeting, Torrey learns of a top-secret offensive called Sky Hook he figures out enough of it to impress Powell, and when Sky Hook gets bogged down by the indecisiveness of its commander, Vice Admiral Broderick (Dana Andrews), Powell convinces the commander of the Pacific Fleet (Adm. Chester Nimitz, unnamed here but played by Henry Fonda) that Torrey is the man to salvage the operation. Promoted to rear admiral, with Eddington who'd been rotting away on a shore assignment, drunk most of the time assigned as his chief of staff, Torrey gets Sky Hook rolling and finally finds his purpose in this war, gaining the belated admiration of his son in the process. Eddington is similarly motivated but is still haunted by the violent, ultimately self-destructive demons that blighted his marriage and his life he is particularly attracted to a young nurse, Annalee Dohrn (Jill Haworth), not knowing that she is already involved romantically with Jere Torrey. Meanwhile, McConnell survives the sinking of his ship and is ordered to join Torrey's staff. Matters all come to a head when the Japanese begin a counter-offensive to Torrey's planned troop landing. And just at the time Torrey needs his men at their best, Eddington's violence and rage boil to the surface in a way that will destroy him and blight both men's lives. In a final attempt at redemption, Eddington provides Torrey with the information he needs to set up a battle that he has at least a chance of winning, pitting his small task group of destroyers and cruisers against the Japanese task force led by the Yamato, the largest battleship ever built.
HATARI!
Hatari! is Swahili for "danger"and also the word for action, adventure and broad comedy in this two-fisted Howard Hawks effort. John Wayne stars as the head of a daring Tanganyka-based group which captures wild animals on behalf of the world's zoos. Hardy Kruger, Gérard Blain and Red Buttons are members of Wayne's men-only contingent, all of whom are reduced to jello when the curvaceous Elsa Martinelli enters the scene. In tried and true Howard Hawks fashion, Martinelli quickly becomes "one of the guys," though Wayne apparently can't say two words to her without sparking an argument. The second half of this amazingly long (159 minute) film concerns the care and maintenance of a baby elephant; the barely credible finale is devoted to a comic pachyderm stampede down an urban African street, ending literally at the foot of Martinelli's bed. The other scene worth mentioning involves comedy-relief Red Buttons' efforts to create a fireworks-powered animal trap. Not to be taken seriously for a minute, Hatari is attractively packaged and neatly tied up with a danceable-pranceable theme song by Henry Mancini.
RIO LOBO
After the Civil War, a Union Colonel goes to Rio Lobo to take revenge on two traitors.
BIG JAKE
An aging Texas cattle man who has outlived his time swings into action when outlaws kidnap his grandson and wound his son. He returns to his estranged family to help them in the search for Little Jake.
THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE
Like Pontius Pilate, director John Ford asks "What is truth?" in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valancebut unlike Pilate, Ford waits for an answer. The film opens in 1910, with distinguished and influential U.S. senator Ransom Stoddard (James Stewart) and his wife Hallie (Vera Miles) returning to the dusty little frontier town where they met and married twenty-five years earlier. They have come back to attend the funeral of impoverished "nobody" Tom Doniphon (John Wayne). When a reporter asks why, Stoddard relates a film-long flashback. He recalls how, as a greenhorn lawyer, he had run afoul of notorious gunman Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin), who worked for a powerful cartel which had the territory in its clutches. Time and again, "pilgrim" Stoddard had his hide saved by the much-feared but essentially decent Doniphon. It wasn't that Doniphon was particularly fond of Stoddard; it was simply that Hallie was in love with Stoddard, and Doniphon was in love with Hallie and would do anything to assure her happiness, even if it meant giving her up to a greenhorn. When Liberty Valance challenged Stoddard to a showdown, everyone in town was certain that the greenhorn didn't stand a chance. Still, when the smoke cleared, Stoddard was still standing, and Liberty Valance lay dead. On the strength of his reputation as the man who shot Valance, Stoddard was railroaded into a political career, in the hope that he'd rid the territory of corruption. Stoddard balked at the notion of winning an election simply because he killed a man-until Doniphon, in strictest confidence, told Stoddard the truth: It was Doniphon, not Stoddard, who shot down Valance. Stoddard was about to reveal this to the world, but Doniphon told him not to. It was far more important in Doniphon's eyes that a decent, honest man like Stoddard become a major political figure; Stoddard represented the "new" civilized west, while Doniphon knew that he and the West he represented were already anachronisms. Thus Stoddard went on to a spectacular political career, bringing extensive reforms to the state, while Doniphon faded into the woodwork. His story finished, the aged Stoddard asks the reporter if he plans to print the truth. The reporter responds by tearing up his notes. "This is the West, sir, " the reporter explains quietly. "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." Dismissed as just another cowboy opus at the time of its release, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance has since taken its proper place as one of the great Western classics. It questions the role of myth in forging the legends of the West, while setting this theme in the elegiac atmosphere of the West itself, set off by the aging Stewart and Wayne.
THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER
Henry Hathaway directs the 1965 psychological Western The Sons of Katie Elder. Four sons reunite in their Texas hometown to attend their mother's funeral. John (John Wayne) is the gunfighter, Tom (Dean Martin) is the gambler, Matt (Earl Holliman) is the quiet one, and Bud (Michael Anderson Jr.) is the youngest. They soon learn that their father gambled away the family ranch, leading to his own murder. The brothers decide to find their father's killer and get back the ranch, even though they are discouraged to do so by local Sheriff Billy Wilson (Paul Fix). When the sheriff turns up dead, the Elder boys are blamed for the murder. Deputy Sheriff Ben Latta (Jeremy Slate) joins forces with the only witnesses of the murder: Morgan Hastings (James Gregory) and his son Dave (Dennis Hopper). A gunfight breaks out between the Hastings gang and the Elder gang. After his brother Matt is killed, John decides to settle the ranch dispute in a court of law with a judge (Sheldon Allman). However, Tom decides to take matters into his own hands by kidnapping Dave. After the final climactic gunfight, John and the wounded Bud retreat to a rooming house owned by Mary Gordon (Martha Hyer).
TRUE GRIT
In 1970, John Wayne won an Academy Award. for his larger-than-life performance as the drunken, uncouth and totally fearless one-eyed U.S. Marshall, Rooster Cogburn. The cantankerous Rooster is hired by a headstrong young girl (Kim Darby) to find the man who murdered her father and fled with the family savings. When Cogburn's employer insists on accompanying the old gunfighter, sparks fly. And the situation goes from troubled to disastrous when an inexperienced but enthusiastic Texas Ranger (Glen Campbell) joins the party. Laughter and tears punctuate the wild action in this extraordinary Western which features performances by Robert Duvall and Strother Martin.
THE SHOOTIST
About ten minutes into The Shootist, Doctor Hostetler (James Stewart) tells aging western gunfighter John Bernard Books (John Wayne) "You have a cancer." Knowing that his death will be painful and lingering, Books is determined to be shot in the line of "duty". In his remaining two months, Books settles scores with old enemies, including gambler Pulford (Hugh O'Brian) and Marshall Thibido (Harry Morgan) and reaches out to new friends (including feisty widow Lauren Bacall and her hero-worshipping son Ron Howard). In the end, is shot to death, but in so doing he is able to dissuade another from following his blood-stained example. Throughout the film, Book's imminent demise is compared with the decline of the west, as represented by the automobiles and streetcars that have begun to blight the main street of Wayne's home town. It is unknown if John Wayne was aware that he was dying of cancer when he agreed to film The Shootist; whatever the case, the film is a powerful valedictory to a remarkable man and a fabulous career.
EL DORADO
Legendary producer-director Howard Hawks teams with two equally legendary stars, John Wayne and Robert Mitchum, in this classic Western drama. Mitchum plays to perfection an alcoholic but gutsy sheriff who relentlessly battles the dark side of the wild West, ruthless cattle barons and crooked "businessmen." The Duke gives an equally adept performance as the sheriff's old friend who knows his way around a gunfight. Filled with brawling action and humor, El Dorado delivers the goods. James Caan and Ed Asner co-star.
THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY
When a commercial airliner developes engine problems on a trans- Pacific flight and the pilot loses his nerve, it is up to the washed-up co-pilot Dan Roman to bring the plane in safely.
ISLAND IN THE SKY
A transport plane crash-lands in the frozen wastes of Labrador, and the plane's pilot, Dooley, must keep his men alive in deadly conditions while waiting for rescue.
HONDO
Based on the Louis L'Amour story "The Gift of Cochise," this sparkling western has Wayne as a half-Indian Cavalry scout who, with his feral dog companion, finds a young woman and her son living on a isolated ranch in unfriendly Apache country. A poetic and exciting script, outstanding performances, and breathtaking scenery make this an indisputable classic. Page's debut.
MCLINTOCK!
Wayne shows off his funny side in this 1963 western, a comedy inspired by The Taming of the Shrew. Starring as wealthy cattle baron G.W. McLintock, Wayne shows a real sense of comic timing in several scenes filled with slapstick humor. After his wife (Maureen O'Hara) and daughter leave him for the East, McLintock attempts to win them back. The dynamics between O'Hara and Wayne are the strong suit of this film, the actors having worked together previously on
THE QUIET MAN
As this is by no means a revisionist western, McLintock's chauvinistic attempts to "tame" his wife fit within the problematic ideology of the larger western genre. The ultimate example of this comes at the end of the film when McLintock settles his marital dispute by publicly "spanking" his wife in what is now a notorious cinematic moment.

--Tom Keogh

What a wonderful movie!.......2007-05-17
This was such a touching movie. If you enjoyed the movie Simon Birch then you will love this movie. It's inspirational and a tear jerker!
A Must See Movie.......2007-05-13
While watching this movie it takes you back to when you were in school..and the truth about how cruel kids can be. But at the same time how they can stand up for what is right. I have loaned this movie out to everyone I know. They all have purchased it after watching it.
Another must see movie ( Pay it Forward) you won't forget either of these movies.
Excellent movie.......2007-03-18
Freak the Mighty, a book by Rodman Philbrick, was the inspiration for the movie The Mighty. It is a character-builing story, with two opposites who become a powerful unit against the challenges each must deal with. My eighth graders loved the book when we read it in class; the movie became a wonderful way to compare and contrast the written and the film depictions of the characters. I have added Freak the Mighty to my list of favorite books and The Mighty to my list of favorite movies.
Everyone Needs to Read this book!.......2007-02-16
The first time I read this book, I laughed, cried, and felt every emotion possible. As a middle school teacher, I made sure I read it to my students. It has become a favorite for the school and most of the students that have read it. The movie is also outanding. This book needs to be a classic.... If you are reading this review, you need to purchase the book and read it to your children, grandchildren or whoever. They will love you forever!!!
The Mighty mighty.......2007-01-15
I purchased this movie again because I lost my first copy. I used it as a follow up to the reading of the book by the same title. My at risk junior high school students enjoyed both the book and the movie!!! The theme is timeless and the film is well acted. It can be seen over and over again!

John Wayne personally produced many of his '50s films, which is why some of them have languished in corporate limbo following his death. The High and the Mighty was one of his most popular vehicles (no pun intended). This long, necessarily sedentary drama aboard an endangered airliner is a CinemaScope bridge between 1932's Grand Hotel and 1970s disaster movies. Despite Wayne's iconic presence as a pilot--now copilot--who survived the plane crash that wiped out his family, it's an ensemble movie with an impressive cast: Robert Stack sharing the cockpit, Oscar® nominees Claire Trevor and Jan Sterling, Laraine Day, Robert Newton, Paul Kelly, John Qualen, Regis Toomey, the ubiquitous Paul Fix, and director William A. Wellman's good-luck character actor Douglas Fowley. Dimitri Tiomkin's score won the Oscar, though the fondly remembered theme song isn't as prominent as you'd expect. Wings veteran William H. Clothier shot the aerial footage. --Richard T. Jameson

A CLASSIC FOR ALL TIME.......2007-05-31
one of the great motion pictures of all time. so long in limbo and now to see it in the stores and on tv is very rewarding. i remember this when it was on tv in the early sixies in texas. wonderful memories, it is so wonderful to see it in its rightful place. dont listen to the idiotic remarks about it being dated....how assinine of course ...its a movie when the world was a better place...and more trust in the world. so ignore the ignorance. a truly wonderful movie in a wonderful time, beautiful to look at and perfectly done for its time....there was and never will be another JOHN WAYNE a true AMERICAN .. we need more of him. an all time marvelous movie. A 1.
wellman & wayne fly high.......2007-05-12
an all around great movie, with john wayne understated as the vet pilot who keeps his head while others are losing theirs. if youre a fan of "airport" movies, (or more likely "airplane") this long unseen film is a must-see for you. all the cliches start here, from the long character list to the white knuckle action to robert stack! director william wellman manned yet another aviation pic, with wonderful performances from claire trevor (waynes "stagecoach" co star!), jan sterling, robert newton, phil harris, &c. and dont forget that great theme music. also, its a birds eye view into what air travel was like in the pre-jet era. tho "dated", this is a wonderful movie, and well worth your time.
The High and the Mighty.......2007-05-07
Although this is drama 50s style, I found the movie hysterical and when John Wayne does a John Wayne I cheer. I love this movie for its unintentual humor. Still great acting.
I was slightly disappointed.......2007-04-12
If for anything, The High and the Mighty can be used as an example as to why John Wayne was a true "superstar."
This film has some impressive cinematography, and several very suspenseful scenes, but in all honesty, it's really a melodramatic, 50s style soap-opera that wasn't very well written or well acted by the cast.
There are, however, two things that really lift this film out of mediocre territory.
The beautiful and haunting score, and the electrifying presence of John Wayne. The Duke dominates every scene he is in, and he's the main reason modern viewers keep watching this very dated film. When the movie is over, the viewer doesn't want to say it was average because of the efforts and accomplishments of Wayne. This may have been a "big and adventurous" film back in it's day, but in the year of 2007, it's entertainment value comes strictly from it's "big and adventurous" lead star. Not very many stars can carry a film like Wayne, and he really shines in this one.
Great movie!!!.......2007-02-14
This is a good movie. I've never seen it all the way through before I bought the DVD (TCM and ACM has aired it) and I liked it.

There's A Mighty Wind a-blowin', along with the gales of laughter you'll get from Christopher Guest's third exercise in brilliant "mockumentary." After tackling small-town theatricals in Waiting for Guffman and obsessive dog-show contestants in Best in Show, Guest and his reliable stable of repertory players (including Fred Willard, Parker Posey, and Bob Balaban) apply their improvisational genius to a latter-day reunion of fictional '60s-era folk singers, a comedic goldmine that Guest first explored 30 years earlier on The National Lampoon Radio Hour. Collaborating with costar and cowriter Eugene Levy (who gives the film's funniest performance), Guest is so delicate in his satirical approach that the laughs aren't always obvious, and the subtlety can be as wistful (as in Catherine O'Hara's performance as Levy's auto-harpist partner) as it is hilarious. Some may wish for more blatant comedy, but that would compromise the genuine affection that Guest & Co. have for the music they're spoofing. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
More pseudo-documentary than comedy, or more accurately, a mockumentary sans the mock........2007-06-05
You can count me in with the people who really liked this one, especially because it deviates from Christopher Guest's old formula. The way "Waiting for Guffman" skewered the pretensions of the residents of Blaine, and the way "Best in Show" skewered its dog owning protagonists certainly had a bit of poison in it. In this film, the audience can empathize at some of the characters while laughing at them, Mitch and Mickey being the best examples. I wanted to see more of them in this film. Now, I know that Guest has a burden in trying to squeeze in the Parker Poseys and crew, point taken. However, this film was about 80 minutes long. Mr. Guest, you are going to have to explain to me, why we see so little of our favorites in this film? This film could have easily incorporated another 30 minutes of running time. I feel this film might have taken a hit in the editing room and perhaps the DVD of it will alter my perception of how good it was. I think it's a big risk for Guest to take in a satire, and for the most part, it pays off.
I am not going to say that this film is bad or even disappointing; however, it was a departure. I missed the craziness of the other two films. This film is more of a serious attempt at the "mockumentary." In fact, we might want to remove the "mock" from it all together. The story centers on a folk festival being planned as a memorial for a great folk producer that has passed away. Of course, all but one of the three original bands being asked to perform has been split up for sometime. It is interesting watching them as they attempt to bring back a musical art form that has been dead a great while.
A couple of side notes: One aspect of this film that I loved was its realism, something missing from Hollywood these days. The Folks men dressed like ex-hippie Baby Boomers, right down to the Birkenstocks, and Fred Willard's office had all of the little knick-knacks that one sees in the offices of smarmy people like him. I think these little details make it easier for the audience to get into the film despite its obvious artifice.
This film will draw on the heart strings, where as the other two really were more interested in laughs. That is not to say that the first two Guest films did not have emotion, they did. It just seems this one has a little more. However, in the end, I feel this movie did pale in comparison to the other two. You can tell a good story and still be hysterically funny. Guest seemed to forget that here and decided to concentrate more on just one.
On Target Parody.......2007-02-27
A Mighty Wind is an on taget parody of folk music types. During the 1960's, folk music was a big fad. Now, outside of both NPR & PBS, folk music has pretty much disappeared from the popular music scene. Folk music has become relegated to only a pitiful remnant.
Part of the reason for this decline is the pecular demographics. Folk music is largely sung by Midwesterners, but its most loyal following is among Jews. Many of the best lines and scenes in A Mighty Wind zero in on this strange fact.
There are other funny matters addressed in A Mighty Wind such as the line, "the costumes are retro now, but they weren't retro then. They were nowtro."
A Mighty Wind is a great parody documentary aka mockumentary.
A Mighty Wind.......2007-02-19
If you lived through the 60's and 70's as an adult, you will find this DVD very funny since it is a parody of the music at that time, and the actors give such convincing performances that there is a laugh a minute.
More Christopher Guest Genius.......2007-01-25
Many of the actors from Christopher Guest's previous movies return for this mockumentary about folk singers/bands. As genius as the movie is, it's also fun to see the actors in new, contrasting roles from "Best in Show" (probably Guest's most mainstream movie).
Parker Posey, who was the freak-out Starbucks-loving He-needs-his-buzy-bee dog owner in "Best in Show" is now the sweet, innocent, way-too-happy Sissy Knox, a member of the New Main Street Singers.
Guest, himself, who was the nut-naming, backwoods, homey Harlan Pepper in "Best in Show" is now the upright bass-playing, super-deep-voice Harry Shearer, a member of The Folksmen.
And the list goes on and on and on.
As all the folk bands come together to perform in a reunion concert after the death of Irving Steinbloom, a folk music producer icon, the characters take shape and create the same brilliant comedy that Guest created with "Best in Show" and "Waiting for Guffman." But even as comedy reigns supreme, the singing scene with Mitch & Mickey, played by Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara, will get even the most hard-hearted person choked up.
A movie worth seeing and a DVD worth adding to any person's collection.
Pitch Perfect.......2006-12-20
The characters in this movie are all the people I grew up with and watched on PBS. Guest and Co. brilliantly but gently parody the sweetness and earnestness of their subjects. The songs - written by Michael McKean and his wife - are silly but sometimes truly wonderful; they're made more impressive by the fact that all of the performers sing and play their instruments live. Everyone is great in this film - Guest sending up Peter Yarrow from Peter Paul & Mary is a hoot - but Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara are a revelation as Mitch and Mickey. The scene where he wanders in with a single red rose for her floors me every time.

Mira Sorvino won an Oscar for her performance as a bubbleheaded hooker and porn star who happens to be the mother of a bright young boy adopted by a Manhattan couple (Woody Allen and Helena Bonham Carter). The story finds Allen's sportswriter character becoming curious about the identity of his son's biological mom, and he strikes up a relationship with her without revealing why. This 27th feature written and directed by Allen is a nice combination of smart comedy and some of the wackier energy of his earliest movies. (Between scenes, there's a running gag involving a Greek chorus--actually filmed among some real Greek ruins--who do song-and-dance interpretations of the script's events.) This isn't Allen at his best, but it is a fine minor work graced by Sorvino's spin on the cinema's archetypal dumb blonde. --Tom Keogh
Description
From Oscar(R)-winning writer-director Woody Allen, MIGHTY APHRODITE is a hilarious, romantic comedy set in contemporary New York. "One of the best comedies of the year!" (The Boston Globe) "Mira Sorvino is wonderful!" (Roger Ebert)
Customer Reviews:
One of the Best Later Comedies.......2007-04-26
It's easy to break Woody's directing career into three phases. Early career, which would be the seventies movies with Diane Keaton. The mid-career phase was the eighties and early-nineties, including all of the films with Mia Farrow. And late career would be everything after that, up through the latest films with Scarlett Johansson.
Of the later films, this one is often considered the best--though you could certainly make a case for "Deconstructing Harry," or even "Sweet and Lowdown." This one is certainly the best of his later films that might be called a straight comedy.
Woody's experimented with almost every type of movie: slap stick (Bananas), musical (Everyone Says I Love you), fake biopic (Zelig), Fellini inspired (Stardust Memories), Bergman inspired (Another woman), whodunnit (Manhattan Murder Mystery), etc, etc, etc. On this one he found something truly inspired--he blended the elements of Greek tragedy with a Woody Allen comedy--and it worked.
The story here doesn't have the layers of a film like "Hannah and Her Sisters." It's a comedy about a couple who adopt a child. Woody plays the father, and he becomes obsessed with learning about the child's real mother. After building her up in his mind, he's let down to discover she's a call girl, so he takes it upon himself to make her life better, and comedy ensues.
Mira Sorvino won an Oscar for her role, and there is good supporting performances from F. Murray Abraham and Helena Bonham Carter, but what really makes this movie is the idea of a Greek Chorus narrating the tale and gradually taking a larger role then you'll ever find in "Oedipus" as they become more and more involved in Allen's decision making. The movie even ends with the Greek element of a deux ex machina.
Like most of Allen's movies, this may not appeal to everyone, but if you're a fan then you will really enjoy this movie and you need to see it.
Greek tragedy was never this funny.......2007-03-01
This is the last hilarious movie made by Woody. He adopts a kid and the kid turns out to be very bright, so Woody goes on a quest to find the birth mother. Woody is at his peak, my only complaint was Mirs's voice, I heard her speak before and it wasen't this annoying. Other than that you could do a lot worse comedy wise. Enjoy!
Awful movie...ditto on "WHAT WAS THE ACADEMY THINKING?!".......2006-10-21
So this was the breakout movie for Mira Sorvino, the one that earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1995.
This movie, and Mira Sorvino's performance in it, was so bad that after it was over, I just had to find out who her competitors were for the 1995 Best Supporting Actress category.
Let's see.....according to Wikipedia they were: Kathleen Quinlin ("Apollo 13" - a fairly standard worried-wife-of-astronaut-in-danger role), Mare Winningham ("Georgia" - did not see this one), Joan Allen ("Nixon" - did not see, but how hard can it be to play the wooden Pat Nixon?), and Kate Winslet ("Sense and Sensibilities" - did not see either, but Ang Lee was robbed by the Academy here also).
It only proves just how few good roles there are for women in today's Hollywood that Mira Sorvino could win an Oscar for this sort of performance.
And I was beginning to warm up to her, too - she was great in "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion", and terrific also in "Beautiful Girls".
So, what exactly is so bad about this movie? Here's a brief list:
1. Mira Sorvino plays the entire movie in a high-pitched falsetto that sounds like her voice is breaking. Another reviewer described this as similar to listening to fingernails on a blackboard. Maybe in 1995, because she was new, the Academy didn't realize that this wasn't her real voice and took pity on her....
2. Stupid plot device of the Greek Chorus.
3. Stupid happy ending with a twist.
4. Lots of profanity and dialogue that includes explicit descriptions of sex acts done in pornography movies.....while this movie is not itself a porn flick, the explicit details of the porn industry included in the dialogue definitely makes it NOT a movie for families to watch.
5. Odd sight of a very old and wrinkly Woody Allen (with dyed hair and bald spot) making out with TWO women young enough to be his granddaughters.....all right, so I'm just jealous - Woody still looks gross....
6. Cliched, poorly developed characters, a plotline that goes around in circles, and lots and lots of pointless, unfunny dialogue.
In summary, this movie is bad, bad, bad......
Woody's Last Excellent Comedy.......2006-07-09
Here it is. The last really 100% enjoyable, insightful Woody Allen movie. Allen deftly mixes and matches classical greek tragedy with common vulgar pornography & prostitution. Sort of his way of identifying the thin line between comedy and tragedy in so much of life. Allen is fascinated by the absurd & the grotesque. He's also fascinated by the profound & the beautiful. Most of all, he's fascinated by how life embodies so many contradictions. Sometimes simultaneously. Mira Sorvino is wonderful as a basically decent lady who happens to be a hooker and adult actres and Allen is his usual goofy neurotic mess.
Allen at his best!.......2006-04-17
Woody Allen's movies fit together perfectly like jigsaw puzzles, well and evenly scripted, excellent casts (even better when Allen's in them), funny comments, interesting plots, plausible endings. I loved this flick, just watched it, had seen it before and loved it then too. I recalled there being more vulgarity in it than there was, and would have liked it, but it earned it's R rating proudly. It was interesting (all his movies are to me), funny as hell and had a snappy twist of an ending. In fact a perfect ending. I don't remember liking the Greek chorus the 1st time I saw it, but I loved it this time, it filled in the gaps, fleshed out the movie and was funny. In fact, the whole thing was funny. Movies like this are why I watch so much Woody Allen.

A Mighty Wind
Best in Show
Christopher Guest, the man behind Waiting for Guffman, turns his comic eye on another little world that takes itself a bit too seriously: the world of competitive dog shows. Best in Show follows a clutch of dog owners as they prepare and preen their dogs to win a national competition. They include the yuppie pair (Parker Posey and Michael Hitchcock) who fear they've traumatized their Weimaraner by having sex in front of him; a suburban husband and wife (Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara) with a terrier and a long history of previous lovers on the wife's part; the Southern owner of a bloodhound (Guest himself) with aspirations as a ventriloquist; and many more. Following the same "mockumentary" format of Spinal Tap and Guffman, Best in Show takes in some of the dog show officials, the manager of a nearby hotel that allows dogs to stay there, and the commentators of the competition (a particularly knockout comic turn by Fred Willard as an oafish announcer). The movie manages to paint an affectionate portrait of its quirky characters without ever losing sight of the ridiculousness of their obsessive world. Almost all of the scenes were created through improvisation. While lacking the overall focus of a written script, Best in Show captures hilarious and absurd aspects of human behavior that could never be written down. The movie's success is a testament to both the talent of the actors and Guest's discerning eye. --Bret Fetzer
Waiting for Guffman
One of the funniest films in many a moon was hiding at art house theaters in 1998. Former Saturday Night Live comedian and Spinal Tap member Christopher Guest creates the ultimate parody of small-town dramatics, Waiting for Guffman. Corky St. Claire (Guest), an overwhelming drama director hiding out in Blaine, Missouri, thinks he has found the vehicle to put him back on Broadway: the city's 150th anniversary play, Red, White, and Blaine. As rehearsals start, we learn of the town's history ("the stool capital of the world") including a brush with a UFO. The mockumentary follows the various townsfolk wishing for stardom: Parker Posey as a Dairy Queen clerk, Catherine O'Hara and Fred Willard as stage-struck travel agents, Matthew Keeslar as the town's bad boy, and Eugene Levy (who cowrote the film with Guest) as a dentist who dreams of glory on the stage. The film is a hoot from beginning to end, and be sure to watch the closing credits. Fans of Guest's deft dry humor should not miss his other parody of the entertainment world, The Big Picture (Kevin Bacon as a student filmmaker who goes to Hollywood). --Doug Thomas
Description
A MIGHTY WIND: Documentary-style Comedy. Christopher Guest follows up his acclaimed ensemble comedies Best in Show and Waiting for Guffman with a docu-comedy about three folk groups from the 60s who reunite for a memorial concert in New York City following the death of a legendary folk manager. BEST IN SHOW: The tension is palpable, the excitement is mounting and the heady scent of competition is in the air as hundreds of eager contestants from across America prepare to take part in what is undoubtedly one of the greatest events of their lives -- the Mayflower Dog Show. WAITING FOR GUFFMAN: A town of Blaine, Missouri is preparing for celebrations of its 150th anniversary. Corky St.Clair, an off-off-off-off-off-Broadway director is putting together an amateur theater show about the town's history, starring a local dentist, a couple of travel agents, a Dairy Queen waitress, and a car repairman. He invites a Broadway theater critic Mr. Guffman to see the opening night of the show
Customer Reviews:
You either love it or hate it----and I love it.......2007-01-03
I admit to an unexplained fondness for clever parody and satire. These three films by Christopher Guest fall right into my slot. Each highlights a different form of unwarranted self-importance, but rarely crosses the line of easy insults or demeaning caricature. The realism is ----well, very real (although it doesn't go to 11 as in an earlier semi-related film).
All the characters are clearly drawn from real life. Although employing many of the same actors in diverse roles, the films allow each individual improv performer to shine a unique light that fully illuminates the target subjects. My two 20-ish daugthers and I often quote from these films. The biting wit is timeless. Outstanding talent, craftsmanship, and creativity forms the heart of all these stories. Very, very funny stuff.
i've talked about brittish comedy at its best but now here's american comedy at its best.......2006-08-18
great and hillarious!!! a mighty wind, best in show, waiting for guffman...i have watched theses movies countless times and it still shockes me how funny and side splitting these perfectly hillarious movies are!!!
a must get for everyone out there!!!
great films, poor packaging.......2005-02-04
The DVDs are great. They have lots of great extras, including commentary on additional scenes, insightful commentary in general, cast bios, etc. I was disappointed in the packaging -- flimsy cardboard and are smaller than more traditional packages.
I received these as a gift, and I think that as a gift, they are great.
I have watched these films over and over again and enjoy them each time. The acting is incredible and it amazes me that it's improvised -- the actors make it look so easy, which means it must be difficult! In A Mighty Wind, all the actors sing and play their own instruments, with some learning just for this film. Great dedication to their artform.
Three great movies, but what's so special about the price?.......2004-01-12
I'm tempted to dock one star mainly because you'd actually pay LESS buying them separately than in this "special" package. ($14.99 each for Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show, $23.76 for Mighty Wind = $53.74). The three-fer costs over $55. What gives? Well, I suppose you save something on shipping.
Regardless, these three films are easily worth the money at either price.
Fantastic Movies, Terrible Presentation.......2004-01-09
Boo, Warner Brothers!!!
You've taken three amazing movies and packaged them terribly.
I was extremely excited to have received this "box set" for Christmas, until I unwrapped it. It's three seperate loose DVDs with no box to tie them all together. And to add insult to injury, all of the DVDs are encased in the old-school type packaging with the cheap cardboard cover and black "snap" latch.
Very disappointing. Warner Brothers SUCKS! They really need to work on how they showcase their work on DVD in the future. They could take a real hint from New Line which always releases their best films with pride and flair.
As far as the movies go, they are amazing and packed with extras. It's just sad that they would call this a collection and not treat it as such.

Charlize Theron is the latest stunning blonde to be hanging around some big ape in a Hollywood movie, this one a remake of the 1949 semi-classic with echoes of the superior King Kong. Theron plays the daugher of an American researcher killed by poachers in Africa. The baby gorilla left in her care grows up to become a hugely tall and broad specimen named Joe, living in the mountains as a mostly unseen legend among people who live there. Along comes an eco-minded emissary (Bill Paxton) from a California sanctuary, who talks the jungle girl into providing safe haven for Joe at the L.A. facility. The transition is not without discomfort, but everything is aggravated via a conspiracy of poachers to get Joe into their own greedy hands. Director Ron Underwood (City Slickers) uses a combination of special-effects techniques to give Joe life and personality, and he succeeds quite effectively. The requisite giant-ape-goes-amok scenes are all in place--a couple of them pretty intense--as is a conclusion that finds the simian hero performing a stunning feat of escalation. Underwood attempts to give a little modern spin to some classic Hollywood conventions regarding wild hearts lost in civilization, and the results are pretty agreeable family fare. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:
Mighty Joe Young.......2007-05-09
this is an absolute good movie, some thrills and chills but nothing beats the heartwarming connection between the girl and the gorilla.
Not anything to go ape over........2007-05-07
Believe it or not the only reason I bought Mighty Joe Young
was to see a cameo scene with Ray Harryhaussen in it and Terry
Moore, who played husband and wife. Who are they? Well Miss Moore
was the original lead in the 1949 Mighty Joe Young B&W version and
Ray Harryhaussen was the assistant to Willis O'Brien in the special
effects department....and went on to do his own astounding FX in 7th Voyage of Sinbad and Earth vs The Flying Saucers and many many more.
Now as far as the new version of MJY...it seemed to stick to the
original quite well...even to the scene where Joe saves the child.
Definitely Disneyfied, but nothing surprising as far as plot. I admit
the special effects did impress me, especially when was in the
streets confronting humanity. This would probably be a great addition
for youngsters who believe in a bond between humans and monkeys.
EXCELLENT REMAKE BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL.......2007-03-25
I am a huge Harryhausen fan and an old monster movie lover! So it is hard for me to say that they did a great job on this remake! The effects are incredible and Charlize Theron in perfectly cast(and she's HOT!) The DVD transfer is very good and there are some interesting extras. One of the best remakes ever!
LifeTimer... does what it says.......2007-01-09
Great program, just wish that when you create a new one, that it would start off blank, to make it easier to enter the date.... But all in all,it does do what it says, and I really have no need for many timers.
A Mighty Remake.......2006-12-09
While the old classic is just that, a classic, this remake is far superior in every way. Theron is both stunning and a talented Oscar winner for "Monster." Bill Paxton is believable as always and so is the cast of familar faces. This is fun for the whole family with only some mild profanity and violence (I wouldn't let my youngest child see the needlessly graphic "electrocution" scene of the villian in the end). The special effects are the kind that will hold up over time and make this worth watching over and over again. My family loves this film; it has excellent repeat value.

Disney had an unexpected hit with this predictable
