Saw opens with a gruesome scenario: Two men are chained to the walls of a grimy bathroom with a bloody corpse lying on the floor between them. Tape recordings tell them that one of the men has to kill the other, or his wife and child will die. The corpse is holding a gun in one hand, but it's out of reach...but whoever has locked these two up has thoughtfully provided a hacksaw that can't cut through the heavy chain, but might cut through a little flesh and bone. From there, Saw jumps back and forth as the two men slowly unravel how they know each other and that their tormentor is one of those all-knowing, all-capable serial killers (it goes without saying that Saw is hugely influenced by Seven and the movies of Dario Argento), a fellow known as Jigsaw who disguises his voice and lets a creepy puppet (lifted almost directly from the eccentric animations of the Brothers Quay) be his visual representative. But imitation isn't inherently bad; what puts Saw ahead of its horror compatriots is a gleeful enthusiasm that a dozen sequels to Halloween couldn't muster. Saw has problems--it's clumsily overwritten (every detail of what's going on, no matter how visually evident, will be explained by the characters); most of the situations are static and implausible; and though the cast includes talented veterans like Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride) and Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon), the acting has the depth of a puddle. The rapid pace and frequently frenzied camerawork keep things in motion and while the philosophical underpinnings of Jigsaw won't challenge Hegel or Schopenhauer, they do offer more food for thought than most contemporary horror. Discriminating fans of the genre who like their gore with a glimmer of an idea will embrace Saw.
The Uncut Edition differs only slightly from the theatrical release; it reinserts a little more gore that was cut to get an R rating and tightens up the editing (the uncut version is actually a teensy bit shorter than the theatrical release). The extras are plentiful (if a bit thin): Two audio commentaries (one by director James Wan, screenwriter/actor Leigh Whannel, and Elwes), one by the producers--thankfully, no one takes themselves too seriously. Also included are a trio of typically self-congratulatory making-of featurettes ("He was amazing to work with" etc.), an animated storyboard of a sequence they couldn't afford to shoot, a DVD-ROM game in which you can construct your own puppet, a couple of self-mocking Easter Eggs, and lots of promotional stuff for Saw II. There's a very curious faux-news show purporting to be an investigation of the "real" Jigsaw, which uses clips from the movie as if they were documentary footage--it's hard to say whether this is a misguided attempt to make the movie seem creepier or a bit of flimsy humor. Most fans will find the regular DVD release satisfactory; this special edition is largely for hardcore enthusiasts. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
Brilliantly sick and twisted...if you can stomach it.......2007-06-20
After countless raves from nearly every one of my horror film loving friends, I decided one day it was time for me to watch "Saw," an indie slasher film premiering at the Sundance Film Festival as one of the "Midnight Movies" that is widely considered one of the greatest horror films of its generation. In no way does this film disappoint, no matter what you are looking for in a film.
Let's start with the story. Two young men--a doctor named Dr. Gordon, and a photographer named Adam--wake up chained to the wall in a dirty, old washroom. Neither of them know how they got there--and they don't know each other either. There is a slaughtered corpse between them eerily clutching a tape recorder and two tapes addressed to each of the men. The message is clear: one must find a way to kill the other by 6:00 that evening or they will both--along with Dr. Gordon's family--be killed.
Before long, they realize they are now victims of the Jigsaw killer--a known serial killer who captures people who do not appreciate life and force them to hurt themselves or others in order to save themselves from a bloody, gruesome, brutal, torturous death. In a series of flashbacks, ze discover more about Jigsaw, and experience previous encounters his victims' have had. We learn of Gordon and Adam's past, an obsessed detective dedicated to finding Jigsaw, and a young drug addict named Amanda who survived Jigsaw's sick "games" and is now mentally scarred. As the story unfolds, it suddenly explodes into a brilliantly twisted psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the credits roll after the shock ending and even for some time after that. Lots of hardcore gore and an INCREDIBLY SCARY atmosphere accompany this much-above-average slasher flick.
The acting is both great and dreadful at different times, but is always thoroughly realistic. Jigsaw is perfectly cast in his role. Adam was sort of an annoying character, but still managed to deliver, and Dr. Gordon seemed like some WAY overdramatic guy out of Star Trek, and was the only character in the small cast I was actually hoping to get killed.
The directing and editing is absolutely nothing to rave about and is solely why I didn't give Saw 5 stars. The flashbacks are adequetly done, sometimes poorly, but unfortunately, for a super psychological horror film like Saw, that is a huge failure and deserves negative feedback. Very fortunately, the strong storyline and sheer terrifying simple atmosphere holds the film together.
Overall--a very enjoyable movie watching experience, and it will scare the living daylights out of you if you watch it alone on a big screen with surround sound. Not one for the little kids however, as it is very violent in some select scenes (particularly the ending) but that shouldn't keep you from seeing it. Very good and much, much more and above and ultimately smarter and more brilliant the average super-violent slasher horror films that are out there today.
Wow - That was a surprise!.......2007-06-15
This was not as gory as I had been led to expect. The twists ARE NOT as predictable as most people think. No.. you don't really see the ending coming.
This is a psychological thriller and it's very good. Well done. There were discrepancies like someone having flash backs to someone else's memories. And some people acting pretty much annoying and the excuses for acting out of the very character templates are rather weak. A cop stays a cop. And if he's watching someone leave a building, he should have noticed when someone went in - or more specifically that he missed it when they went in and had an alarm go off in his head.
Characters are engines to further a plot but they need to be more or you end up with GhostShip where frankly you don't even bother remembering anyone's name - you already know their parts and purposes.
I will definately get the next one. This movie was such a pleasant surprise!
One of the best horror movies I've ever seen!!.......2007-06-01
If you like scary movies, you'd know that they're pretty much all the same. You have an inhumane killer that murders dozens and dozens of people either because they had a rough childhood or for no reason at all. If you've seen one scary movie, you've seen them all, right? Fortunately for horror movie fans, the creators of Saw have come up with a fresh and original concept that has spawned two sequels.
So what's this movie about? It starts out with two men passed out on opposite sides of a decrepit (and secluded) bathroom where they are chained to pipes. Oh and not to mention, there's a dead man lying down in a pool of blood in the middle of the floor. When they come to, they find a tape and upon listening to it, find out that they have to play a game in order to free themselves. The twist? This game is far from being fun. The reason? In order to free themselves, they must cut through their feet to escape. With a saw. The men must figure out why they were chosen to play the game, how, and what happens if they don't escape.
Horror movie fans, this is a must see. And if you don't like scary movies, you must see this anyway. Just turn your head during the gory parts. You'll still truly appreciate the mystery and surprise that surrounds this movie.
A Horror Classic.......2007-05-26
SAW is a true horror classic no doubt about it. Damn he {or she} who remakes this film...EVER. In the world of gore-porn and endless remakes or "re-imaginations", {I have to say this ~ Rob Zombie is pathetic for "re-imagining" Halloween...thanks for trashing it Rob} SAW stands alone as a film that is sick, very disturbing, scary, intense, frightful, mentally numbing, thrilling, avante garde, theatrical, spontaneous, evil, and macabre! This is a film where the villains recorded voice is as disturbing as his actions..and the villain is not even revealed until the last minute of the film...literally the final scene. The film cannot be compared to Se7en because we see most of the torture in the film and the villain takes up more time giving his monologue than Jigsaw's "Most people are so ungrateful to be alive...but not you...not anymore."
Two men wake up in a grimy abandoned bathroom chained and unable to escape. We see a dead man laying in the middle of the floor. His tape recorder reveals the two men are part of a deadly "game" in which only one of them will survive...if he can find the primal instinct..the "will" to survive. As the film progresses we learn about "Jigsaw" who tortures his "test subjects" in order to make them appreciate their lives they have apparently abused. Jigsaw's "test subjects" include: Jeff a man who attempted suicide but failed, Amanda the drug addict, Adam the voyeur photographer and loser, and Dr. Gordon a doctor who neglects his wife and daughter. Jigsaw makes them realize their blessings in his tortuous devices where the subject must maime his/her self or another to escape.
The films gives us clues to the identity of Jigsaw, directing attention to the orderly called Mr. Hindel aka "Zepp"...or is the killer one of the men chained in the bathroom? Dr. Gordon? Adam? The film is a Hitchcockian mystery to figure out 'who is doing this...and why?' that draws you to an intense and disturbing {not to mention disgusting} climax that will leave you stunned.
I like the film because like Se7en there is a sick twisted pathos that is plain and painfully clear in our times: "most people are so ungrateful to be alive...."
The Curse of Aleister Crowley: Descent into Lies and Madness
An Excellent Horror Flick.......2007-04-20
I'm not exactly sure why, but I hate to admit I liked this movie. It was blood, guts and gore at its very best. Halloween sets the standard in horror, as far as I'm concerned, and this is in no way on par with that movie, but it kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat. It's a simple plot filled with a lot of elaborate killings scenes. I liked it enough to rent two and three, and if a Saw four comes out, I'll rent it to. If you like horror with gore, you can't miss this movie.

An ok movie.......2007-06-10
If you are purchasing this movie to see Keira Knightly's breasts, make sure you don't blink as you will miss them.
Otherwise the movie is good
Impressed but not..........2007-05-13
I bought this DVD because of Kiera Knightly, I won't deny it. That said I was not expecting much. It still disappointed me.
This film had some good story ideas, but it didn't deliver on any of them. The thriller aspect of it was less than thrilling and I found it to be anticlimatic.
If you are a Kiera fan I guess its worth having for the collection or renting it. If not there is no point to buying or renting this DVD.
Possibly The Worst Film Blunder Ever.......2007-01-03
Warning: Spoilers Abound.
Okay folks, I was flipping channels and came across a movie called The Hole, starring Thora Birch, Keira Knightley and Desmond Harrington. Now, aside from this terrible blunder I'm going to tell you about in just a few more sentences, the film was fairly entertaining. I dig Thora Birch, and her character was really well-played. What really shocked me though, was my quick research after the film was over. I mean, I checked IMdB, Rotten Tomatoes and Wikipedia. Although all reputable sources, none mentioned this ridiculous mistake.
Have you ever been so utterly sure of something so blantantly, painstakingly obvious that it would literally take an entirely different, alien planet to be able to even minutely comprehend the vast insipidness of its vacuous residents? That's how I felt after watching this movie and realizing that apparently I'm the only goddamn human being on this prosaic, infantile planet who immediately saw the dimwitted aberration for what it was!
And what exactly was this stupendous error, you ask? Well... It's very simple. I mean, it couldn't get more common sensically moronic than this. The basic plot of the film is four teenagers trapped in an old war bunker. The movie begins with Thora Birch's rendition of what happened: that her friend set this whole thing up, locked them in the 'hole' and didn't come back when he was supposed to. She escapes and the three others die. The story changes from what she originally told her psychiatrist to what actually happened. Turns out the only way out was actually locked from the inside and Thora had the key the whole time. The other teenagers die for various reasons, irrelevant to the blunder at hand, and she ends up telling the tale to her psychiatrist from inside the bunker. In the end, she kills the guy who set it up and plants the key on him. The police come and find Thora and her psychiatrist in the 'hole' and after rebuking the psychiatrist, mention that the case is now closed. At that moment, a flashback shows Thora murdering her friend that set everything up and planting the key on him. Right after that moment, I said to myself: "What the heck? The door locks from the inside?! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that either a) the door was never locked, or b) someone had to unlock it from the inside!" Alright, those weren't my exact words, but good god, it's so obvious!
And that, my friends, has got to be possibly the worst film blunder ever.
Better Than You'd Expect.......2006-12-23
Surprisingly good movie -- Laurence Fox as always, is hot, and the cast is very strong, even Kiera Knightly, who manages to pull off a good performance with a minimum of her trademark grimacing. The story is engrossing, and keeps you in gritty suspense all the way through.
Great Movie.......2006-09-28
I really enjoyed this movie and have told most of my friends about it and they liked it was well. I thought the acting was wonderful - you can feel the tension build as the whole situation disintegrates into chaos. Awesome ending as well :-)

Adam (Leigh Whannell) wakes up in a dank room across from Dr. Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) and the body of a guy who has blown his own brains out. Not a happy place, obviously, and it gets worse when both men realize that they've been chained and pitted against one another by an unseen but apparently omniscient maniac who's screwing with their psyches as payment for past sins. Director James Wan, who concocted this grimy distraction with screenwriter Whannell, has seen Seven and any number of other arty existential-psycho-cat-and-mouse thrillers, so he's provided Saw with a little flash, a little blood, and a lot of ways to distract you from the fact that it doesn't make a whole hell of a lot of sense. Wan and Whannell (who's not the most accomplished actor, either) pile on the plot twists, which after some initially novel ideas become increasingly juvenile. Elwes works hard but looks embarrassed, and the estimable Danny Glover suffers as the obsessed detective on the case. The denouement will probably surprise you, but it won't get you back the previous 98 minutes.--Steve Wiecking

Love behind bars! Dennis is sent to prison when he is caught using stolen credit cards. While trying to serve his time without the interference of the prison gangs, he meets Mike, a muscle-bound fellow prisoner, and the two begin a steamy romance. This German-style "OZ" features frontal nudity and sexual situations.
Customer Reviews:
Soft-Core Snoozer.......2007-05-24
Just like a hardcore porn movie, this has almost no plot, story, character development. Unlike a hardcore porn movie, there's no real sex.
Incredibly boring. The soft core sex scenes are pretty tame. What little story there is is incredible trite and contrived. Poorly made soft-core version of the prison segment of American History X where the black and white characters find some squishy love instead of friendship. Yawn.
Actually, I've seen some porn movies that have better stories, dialoge and acting.
A Different Kind of Love Story.......2007-04-15
"Locked Up"
A Different Kind of Love Story
Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride
"Locked Up" (TLA Releasing) is a tender and provocative love story. Filmed in a real prison the film is very entertaining. The two stars are excellent actors and the script is quite good even though the ending is quite unbelievable. Some of the scenes are so graphic that the film is very close to porn--there is a great deal of nudity and a real masturbation sequence and an extremely graphic rape scene which many may find as unacceptable but it is necessary to the story.
This is a film that many people will condemn; it is not for the weak or the homophobic but in the end it is really quite charming. Made in Germany in 2004 ad directed by Jorg Andreas it is a story of love in prison. It is a bit unbelievable in that two gay guys share a cell. Marcel Schlutt is a gay man playing a gay man on the screen and he is very, very believable. His black lover, Mike Seal, brings a breath of fresh air into the film. Their sex scenes together are highly provocative.
The company that made the movie is primarily known for making gay porn and that shows in the meager dialog between the two men. Porn actors rarely have important lines to say. The dialog, hence, at times, seems to be quite funny. Unlike the banality of many gay romantic movies, "Locked Up" is a step above.
We first meet Dennis (Schlutt) as he is being stripped and brought into a quite dreary German prison. What we see are hunky, burly prison guards who seemed to be fueled with raging hormones and skinny prisoners who are obviously servants to their stronger "husbands". There is a frightening and hair raising shower scene and the guards seem to have no concern for the condition of the prisoners. Dennis learns to adapt quickly to prison life and discovers Mike with whom e shares a deep love,
The problem I had with the film is trying to understand its tone. While Dennis and Mike play out their love affair with seemingly real emotions, it is hard to imagine that they can exist in prison as young lovers do on the outside. They seem to be like petulant adolescents. When a guard separates them after they have shared a romantic interlude, Mike tells him that the (the guard) cannot keep them apart. It sounded how one would expect a young girl would speak to her parents after being caught kissing her boyfriend.
The characters reach no more than one dimension. What is really imprisoning the cast are the limitations of the script. This is why the ending seems not to fit.
Aside from the two leads, the rest of the acting is terrible unless you look at the movie as porn. For porn actors, the cast is outstanding but as serious actors, they have a long way to go.
The movie seems to be testing just how far it can go and in this it succeeds. It is a movie for those who like innovative, independent filmmaking. All of the standard ingredients for a prison movie are here and thrown into is a gay romance. The plot shifts between
brutal realism and romantic fantasy and there is a lot of eye candy to see. It is, however, the two star actors that save the film. Some of the things that you will see will make you uncomfortable and the horrific rape scene is not for the ill at ease. Yet the tender love story makes the film worth a look or two and the real sex scenes give the film a novel quality.
locked up.......2007-04-11
I really liked this movie. The tale of life behind bars is rarely seen, and the reality of life portrayed in the prison system in this movie is superb. If the public knew what goes on perhaps, the system might change.
BORING!.......2007-02-01
This movie is so boring and the lines are so poor that you could sleep on it. What keeps you awake is sex scenes, and attractive actors. Unfortunately actors don't play very well-they sound like they reading from white board behind camera :)
This is edited version. There is porn version of that movie as well.
A poor though respectable imitation of art........2006-08-19
In the spirit of Genet's Un Chant d'Amor, this movie was quite a spectacle, really. I found it enjoyable to see such a fantastical tale of prison romance (and the explicit sex scenes between men were not bad either). At the same time, I tend to agree with the other reviewers when they say that there was not enough in either category, drama or porn, to latch on to.
I was saddened to see that these actors seemed to think they were in a porn first as opposed to a movie that had great potential to have well developed plot, characters, and settings. Some people might have even related to the idea that love can occur in the least likely of places. But the acting level was elementary school play at best, and it kind of subtracted from the story (and I found it was easier to just focus on the scantily clad bodies messing around on screen rather than try and glean something from the scene itself).
I saw, very briefly, that the director, whether he wanted to or not, set up a wonderful dichotomy between the stereotypical prison homosexual and the actual homosexual. The "love" that existed between the tougher inmates and their "punk" was used to demonstrate the rough nature of the prison itself (although I will admit, it was quite a strange prison with rather lax rules and regulations... especially for Germany) and was based more on a sodomitical need to dominate (as are most prison "romances"), whereas the connection between the main characters was more along the lines of an actually love story.
(Sigh) I wish this movie had been filmed, acted, and graphed out better. That someone tried at all is appreciated, but in all actuallity, it could have been SOOOO much better. 2 stars.

It just is not there the story line bad and the actors are not good looking.
Not really worth it..........2006-11-04
I bought this as I thought all three movies would be worth watching and boy was I wrong. The only one of the three that is worth it is Exposed: The Making of a Legend, which is a documentary on the making of Buckleroos. It is well made, funny and has a wonderful insight into the world of gay porn and how it is made.
The other two movies were pretty appalling - softcore porn that didn't really do much. Sure, the men were kinda hot but really, it doesn't go far enough to make it porn and the acting is appalling enough to be porn!
Locked Up has some interesting moments but the characters are bad, the story was kinda shallow and the Mike character (and the actor himself - as seen in the cast interviews) is really annoying.
The Hole can be deemed as kinda funny but, yet again, the acting was bad and I guess perhaps the 'hardcore' version, if there is one, would've been more fulfilling.
All in all, I recommend buying Exposed on its own and ignoring the other two.

Did you see what I saw?.......2007-02-01
I have just watched this movie for the first time and it is, as well, the first time I have watched a blu-ray movie. I am using a Sony XBR3 46', Samsung BD P1000 Blu-Ray Player, Harmon Kardon AVR 745(in video bypass mode for 1080p)and Mirage 5.1 Omni Speakers with 2 Klipsch Surrounds for 7.1. I say all of that so you can compare your configuration with mine. I would say that the video quality is better and anyone who says that it is not is just being negative. I understand this negativity because honestly if you own Saw on DVD, I do not, I would guess that it looks nearly as good especially 1080i with Faroudja. However I have to say that the sound difference was stunning. I may be alone on this but I am as much a sound guy as I am a video guy and the uncompressed PCM in 7.1 was insane. I turned the volume nearly off and it still was unbelievable. I am no techno whiz but I would suspect that original DVDs have a more severe compression on the audio than on the video and once both are uncompressed, although there are great improvements in both the audio really stands out.
Poor Quality.......2007-01-15
I agree with the first poster, the quality is not much better than a standard DVD. Its very grainy is many spots too.
Great Movie, Horrible Picture Quality.......2006-12-06
This movie has a great plot but as it was one of the first released titles on Blu-Ray it has poor picture quality. If you want to show off your new blu-ray player try to get some of the more recently released titles as they have much better picture quality.

Product Description
Obsessed with teaching his victims the value of life, a deranged, sadistic serial killer abducts the morally wayward. Once captured, they must face impassible choices in horrific game of survival. The victims must fight to win their lives back, or die trying...
Amazon.com

A great movie - real action - captures the period - authentic - unlike Hollywood plastic products. Best with French dialogue - English subs.

I gave this film three stars because I can't send in the critique otherwise. Mainly this is a warning that, from its amazon link, one might get the wrong impression that this is the same film as BORSALINO when it's actually a sequel. Maltin gives BORSALINO a high rating, but doesn't review this movie.

Brutal, honest, sincere.......2007-05-12
Easily the best film I have seen on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Private expresses the intense antagonisms of the political conflict through an extremely particular interaction between a Palestinian family and an Israeli military unit. Though the political and the personal are woven into each and every struggle of the film, characters are accorded their humanity in personal terms, avoiding the common descent into generalization of many films on this conflict.
The greatest strength of this film is that, though the conflict is central to every piece of the story, it is expressed primarily in its pervasive influence on the individual: the brutality of power, racism, the struggle to maintain purpose amidst uncertainty and fear. In doing this, the film refuses to draw clear lines. There are few heroes, and their moments of redemeption are not grand but small, reluctant, even accidental.
This film has not received the publicity of other recent films and documentaries on the conflict. I fear this is partly because it does not provide that warm, fuzzy feeling U.S. audiences seek. But, probably more important, the film is geared for an audience that is already familiar with the conflict. There is little explanation of who the characters are or the circumstances in which the plot occurs. These are immediately obvious to those familiar with the conflict, but may lead to confusion on the part of many viewers.
Still, if it is a window into the intimate struggles of the conflict you seek, I can not recommend any better film. While one can not help but draw broader implications, it is very clear that the characters are not meant to be merely lowest-common-denominator representatives of their respective societies. Each tells their own tale, and the parts do not add up to the whole story of the conflict, but the pieces that are presented are thoroughly and sincerely told.

Just OK...............2006-03-01
I bought this movie first, because it claims to be a horror movie and also I love any movie about insane asylums. I've seen much worse movies but this one isn't great by no stretch of the imagination. I must admit that Larry Drake does play the role of a deranged psycho pretty good. He has that psycho look.... bald, evil looking, wearing a straight jacket and all. We find him loose in the asylum with a female psychiatrist trapped there in a maze trying to hide from the psycho! She finds aid in the janitor, played by Judd Nelson ( who is weird himself! ) only to find out he was also an inmate of the looney bin. Not a slasher or gore film. At times, a bit boring, at times not. I'd suggest just Rent it only!!
Bloody awful........2006-01-13
Dark Asylum (Gregory Gieras, 2001)
Gieras, who was also responsible for the ultimately stupid Centipede! Three years later, makes his most high-profile film to date. And despite having scored the cast of his career by a mile, they're not enough to keep this leaky ship afloat.
Maggie (Her Alibi's Paulina Porizkova, who should have realized she had no future in film a decade and a half ago) is a psychiatrist who works long days, living with her grandmother and raising a daughter on her own. (Why the father is not in the picture is briefly discussed, then dropped when it is revealed to be an obvious red herring.) She gets a call one night to go to an asylum in the process of closing down, where her old acquaintance Conrad (The DaVinci Code's Jurgen Prochnow) is holding a vicious serial killer known as The Trasher (Darkman's Larry Drake) until the FBI can come round to pick him up. Conrad wants to get the Trasher to talk, and get a book deal out of it, since his livelihood, the asylum, is on its way out, and enlists Maggie to help. All well and good, until things go horribly wrong. The only person left that Maggie has to turn to is the janitor, Quintz (brat packer Judd Nelson, whose career basically disappeared after New Jack City).
It may all sound like it could hold a modicum of interest, but, well, it doesn't. While it wouldn't be fair to say Centipede! Is a better film, it's certainly not a worse one, either. A wooden script combines with some truly painful acting, especially on Proizkova's part, to make this one, at best, something you'd have on in the background at a party for people to laugh at. *
An Entertaining By-The-Numbers B-Movie.......2005-11-27
DARK ASYLUM bills itself as a taut psychological thriller. If you are looking for such in this movie, then you will be disappointed. I was looking for nothing more than a slasher type b-movie and DARK ASYLUM delivered the goods. DARK ASYLUM has a basic plot where a serial killer known as the Trasher (Larry Drake) is captured by the police, sustaining a gunshot injury, and is taken to the Crestwood Asylum, which is in the process of being closed down and has only one other patient still left. Maggie Belham (Paulina Porizkova) is called in to do an evaluation of the Trasher before the feds come to pick him up at midnight. The Trasher, however, is not through with his reign of terror as he effects an escape. Being that the floor of the asylum being used has emergency lockdown, Maggie finds herself trapped in an otherwise abandoned asylum with the Trasher on her heels and no one to depend on except for the one patient, the janitor (Judd Nelson), left at the asylum. They must try to survive until the feds arrive, escape, or destroy the Trasher. DARK ASYLUM has strong and weak points. Its strength is in Gieras' taut direction and Drake's portrayal of the Trasher, a character who is a large, menacing killer who is also more than capable of outsmarting his prey. Its weaknesses are a basic plot with nothing more to add and some, at best, half-hearted performances. While Drake and Porizkova deliver on their performances, Nelson performs his role but really does not bring anything to it, other than comic relief. DARK ASYLUM has several edge of your seat moments, doses of humor, and a pace which keeps it moving. If you are looking for an intense and intelligent psychological thriller, you will not find it here. If you just want to sit back and enjoy a by-the-numbers b-movie, then DARK ASYLUM delivers.--Bob
Rock N' Roll!.......2004-10-18
This suspense filled movie about a diabolical, insane killer, a helplessly trapped psychiatrist, and a caught up in the mix janitor gives new meaning to the term astonishing! The doctor, played saucily by Paulina Porizkova, becomes trapped in an insane asylum at night with no way out. The deranged lunatic, performed admirably by Larry Drake Jr., hunts her down, as they play cat and mouse. Meanwhile, a hapless janitor, played brilliantly by Judd Nelson (The Breakfast Club), tries to help the doctor, and survive the night. Will the sun rise before "The Thrasher" catches the doctor and janitor?
Rent or buy this exciting movie and find out!
Also: great directing by Gregory Gieras.
NUTHOUSE BLUES.......2004-10-07
There are so many implausibilities and coincidences in DARK ASYLUM, one would think at least one of them would be suspenseful. Alas and alack, no such luck. We get the ever interminably boring Larry Drake as the Trasher, a serial killer who has murdered several people and hidden their bodies in the cities sewer system. They catch him and lock him up in a soon to be closed down asylum, waiting for the feds to pick him up at midnight. This asylum also houses Dr. Jurgen Prochnow, an elderly psychiatrist who wants one last chance to make Drake talk. Paulina Portikova couldn't be more trite and boring if she tried; Judd Nelson as an inmate and janitor tries hard but his scenes are so small that he can't save the sinking ship. The cops are all stupid, and why in the world are there hand grenades in a mental hospital? Little suspense is generated, and the film's climactic ending routine.
Some of the camera work is interesting, so it's not a total bomb...but it's not far!
