Talk about too little, too late. A year after Stephen Frears's marvelous Dangerous Liaisons, Milos Forman released this film, based on the same material: the novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Shot at the same time but held so as not to compete, it suffered by comparison. The story--about a pair of aristocrats, former lovers, who wager that the man cannot seduce a particularly chaste woman--is still awash in lust and intrigue. But, while Forman's craft was exceptional, his cast couldn't match the power of its predecessor. In particular, Colin Firth, as the game-playing title character, lacked the snaky charm of John Malkovich, and Meg Tilly couldn't compare to the tragic beauty of Michelle Pfeiffer. Annette Bening, though born to play a vixen, seemed callow and insubstantial next to the sinister depths of Glenn Close. --Marshall Fine

Description
Based on the classic novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, this delectable thriller stars Colin Firth (Bridget Jones's Diary) and Oscars® nominee* Annette Bening (American Beauty) as embittered aristocrats who weave a wicked web of cruel intentions and savage seductions. Directed by Oscar® winner** Milos Forman, Valmont is a darkly amusing period drama that issimply a piece of high entertainment (The Hollywood Reporter). In 18th-century France, a cruel and calculating playboy, Valmont (Firth), makes a malicious wager with the equally wicked Madame de Merteuil (Bening): Valmont must dishonor the married Madame de Tourvel (Meg Tilly) by sleepingwith her. If Valmont succeeds, he gets the privilege of Merteuil's bed as well. But when Valmont sets out on his task, the unexpected happens...he falls in love with Tourvel! And now Merteuil will stop at nothing to destroy Valmont's newfound passion. *1990: Supporting Actress, The Grifters; 1999: Actress, American Beauty *1975: Director, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest; 1984: Director, Amadeus
Customer Reviews:
A choice between a novel and the film.......2007-06-18
I would like to know the actual story from a novel version for this film.
Judging from the following reviews, they should've left this film in its most original form as oppose to producing other remakes like Dangerous Liasons and Cruel Intentions which made the actual story lose its comical air.
I really enjoyed all the plots of the film and believe all the actors did an excellent job in creating an essence of European society where sex was considered taboo.
Scene Missing from the DVD.......2007-06-15
Pretty important one too. Has to do with Valmont giving instructions to his footman to get him "roses."
Definatively Better Than Dangerous Liasons!.......2007-02-27
I wish they had released this right after it was made instead of allowing DL to take all the limelight. A much better film, by far! Can you say lustfully poetic and subtley seductive? Colin Firth has more depth and is exceedingly more handsome than Malchovich could ever be. Fairuza as a mere child is already a powerful actress and ravishingly beautiful at that!
Annette Benning, we hardly knew you.......2006-12-17
I still remember Annette Benning performing a scene from Coastal Disturbances at the Tony Awards before she left for HOLLYWOOD. I didn't like the clothes or the hair but I thought she was crazy and smart underneath. In Valmont, she was spectacular. This movie unfortunately came out at the same time as Hollywood's TERRIBLE simplistic overblown Dangerous Liasons. Not even a youngish Colin Firth could pull ticket buyers to this movie.
Extremely enjoyable!.......2006-12-15
I loved this movie! I watched it and Dangerous Liasons within days of each other and I have to say I agree with the reviewer that said DL was cruel. John Malkovich did a great job of bringing that cruelty to the screen, but it didn't make the movie enjoyable; whereas Colin Firth can be both conniving and sensitive. Michelle Pfeiffer was disappointing and I felt that Glenn Close's character was pathetic. Where Annette Benning portrays a woman who has a tarnished reputaion, but doesn't care about appearances; Glenn Close's portrayal was of a pouty and petulant woman worried about how things will appear to society which in the final scene seems to be written all over her face! Valmont was multi-faceted with conniving characters who also enjoyed their romps, while DL had two dimensional mean characters who didn't even seem to enjoy their lives.

Based on French science fiction novelist Stefan Wul's Oms en Serie ("Oms by the Dozen"), René Laloux's La Planète Sauvage (its title changed to Fantastic Planet for the U.S. release) paints an animated tale of humans kept as domesticated pets by an alien race of blue humanoid giants called Traags. The story takes place on the Traags' planet Ygam, where we follow our narrator, an Om called Terr, from infancy to adulthood, when he escapes his subjugation with a Traag learning device with which to educate the savage Oms and incite them to revolt. As a French-Czech coproduction, this story had much resonance for its makers as an allegory of Czechoslovakia's invasion by Soviet troops in the late '60s, and had to be completed in Paris due to political pressure. While the story does not distinguish itself in the annals of science fiction, the imagination invested in the surreal backdrops, with its eerie creatures and landscapes, does. The animation technique--moving paper cutouts across backgrounds--contributes to the overall feeling of other-worldliness. Fantastic Planet won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 1973. Included on the DVD are three early short subjects by Laloux showing his evolution toward Fantastic Planet. You have your choice of audio: French with English subtitles, or English with English subtitles. But choose the latter so you can see how much the subtitles are cheating you. --Jim Gay

Don't Panic!.......2006-09-15
If you are dismayed by the revelation that the U.S. Anchor Bay DVD edition of this animated sci-fi classic is now out of print and only available via typically price-gouging independent sellers, I have good news. There is a lovely new UK-issued edition out in summer of 2006 that I was able to pick up at one of my more discriminating local video stores (I see you can also order through Amazon UK). This latest reissue (from the Eureka studio) features an anamorphic transfer of the film. Unfortunately, the film has still not been restored, so there are artifacts and "dirt" here and there; but after an "A/B" comparison with my old Anchor Bay copy, I discerned a definite improvement. Another plus: the Eureka edition gives you the option of deleting the subtitles if you wish. Also included: The complete soundtrack (audio only) and two short films by director Laloux-"L'Escargot" (from 1965) and a beautiful 1987 piece based on a Chinese parable, "Comment Wang-Fo Fut Sauve" ("L'Escargot" was also included on the Anchor Bay release; "Wang-Fo" was not). There are two other Laloux shorts on the Anchor Bay release which are not on the new UK package, so I suppose that still gives the Anchor Bay version some degree of collectibility. For overall quality, however I would recommend the Eureka edition. The only caveat: it does require a multi-region player.
Jennifer Drake?.......2006-07-24
Thirty years ago I fell in love with a "Voice"...the Hypnotic (but meaningless!).."The Uvas of Gome are dominated by an inland fibulous sea.."etc., and wonderfully, the subtitles generally say something different again! If this was intended as allegory, I suppose that we ARE "hypnotised" by repetition in our youth, so that we are reluctant to QUESTION...It is an ironic joke therefore, that for 30 yrs. I have actually longed to be once again hypnotised by this Beautiful Voice: a veritable Siren-Song.BUT..who IS Jennifer Drake?.Does anyone know? There MIGHT have been a record version of this soundtrack at one time, because all the music is SO "familiar"..but then, so is the imagery...it's as if it has been secretly playing in my deeper mind all these years. Incidentally I got the VHS tape. Does the DVD mention THE VOICE?
AMAZING Film, TERRIBLE version of it.......2006-06-10
This film is completely spellbinding and amazing. The Terry Gilliam/Monty Python-esque animation is totally stunning. The only PROBLEM is that this is a HORRIBLE, I repeat HORRIBLE, version of it. I own a VHS copy and was thrilled when it first came out onto DVD, but little did I know my VHS VERSION IS ACTUALLY SUPERIOR. The color on the VHS version is better and on the DVD release YOU CANNOT TURN OFF THE SUBTITLES!! The subtitles even overlay the picture and do not stay in the black letterbox bars and at times DO NOT EVEN MATCH THE DIALOGUE OF THE CHARACTERS. I cannot BELIEVE this is going for $99 now when it's such a horrible version of the film. Save your money and buy the VHS version! The DVD is only in stereo anyway, so you won't lose any sound quality. I really hope another distributor gains the rights to this film and releases a version worthy of its caliber as the masterpiece it actually is, because this version is so substandard it makes me sick.
"Can I keep him, father?".......2006-03-10
This is only film I can think of that is actually better dubbed in English. When the blue girl says in that creepy little voice, "Can I keep him, father?" it gives me chills, every time. And the computer's silky hypnotic repetition, "...while our mallian globes regulate the pressure..." Hilarious. This movie is so beautiful -- the music, the colors, the designs. It's audio/visual candy. I love the scene where the blue girl sits in front of her mirror and draws lash lines under one eye. Was that an homage to "A Clockwork Orange" or the other way around? This film is a must for anyone that's into trippy/arty/70's kind of stuff.
public domain.......2006-01-28
Great film - and in public domain! I have several duplicate copies for sale (DVD quality) way below the used prices on here. No one should have to pay so much for this masterpiece!! I am also interested in trading.

Description
Count Ludwig von Karnstein (Christopher Lee) lives under a fearful curse placed by one of his ancestors before she was executed as a witch, stating one of her descendants will be her diabolical reincarnation. While Ludwig attempts to locate the evil ancestor's hidden tomb, a series of horrific vampire killings erupts in the castle -- and the culprit might be Ludwig's own daughter. Chilling and atmospheric, this adaptation of J. Sheridan Le Fanu's horror classic Carmilla was also released as Terror in the Crypt.

Retromedia's Cheapo DVD Production Strikes Again!.......2006-10-17
Great reviews of this movie folks....but where's the technical information about the dvd quality?
The print is the best available, much more detail and less dirt than the bootleg releases. BUT-Retromedia has spent ZERO money on cleaning up this film and some flaws are pretty visible. The title "Terror in the Crypt" is shown at the beginning, but sources claim this is the uncut Euro version-it is different that the AIP bootleg dvd I own. There are NO extras and NO chapters on this disc...VERY NAUGHTY...but that seems to be an alarming new trend. The 1.85:1 ratio with anamorphic enhancement looks very nice and not forced as with other Retromedia dvds, where the films were made widescreen by simply adding the black bars. Compared to newcomer Dark Sky Films recently released films, this dvd could use some better production. There is no doubt that the upcoming Dark Sky version of "Slaughter of the Vampires" will be much cleaner than Retromedia's dvd that was released last year. Let's hope that Retromedia either improves the condition of their dvds or Dark Sky continues to re-release former Retromedia films. The competition is out there and the price is cheaper than these " no frills" Retromedia discs. BTW, I did like the dvd cover.
Beautifully photographed gothic yarn........2006-09-11
Though only superficially faithful to Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's famous novella, "Carmilla," this picture merits praise for its consistent visual distinction, and a unity of mood, (elsewhere, and accurately described as "stately") that lift it far above the overpraised (and dramatically disjointed) "Castle of the Living Dead" which Mr. Lee completed about the same time.
Allegedly set in Styria, but filmed in Italy, this film boasts deep focus black and white cinematography that clearly takes its visual cues from Bava's "Black Sunday." Indeed, this film even features a witch condemnation sequence rather similar to the one depicted in the earlier film.
The castle interiors are alive with looming shadows, the rooms dressed with the appropriate paraphernalia of the genre, (flaming braziers, suits of armor, baroque prickets and saint statues; while the exteriors contain some of the most enchanting landscapes one could wish for--not to mention unforgettable nightscapes--as of two women fleeing across a hillside in billowing peignoirs and lit by the moon, (rather like the cover of a Phyllis Whitney novel).
Also in its favor are some scenes quite faithful to Mr. Le Fanu's original, as in the barouche accident which occasions the arrival of the vampiress, (here re-named "Luba" for inexplicable reasons).
There are some demerits: a heroine that looks like a cross between Barbara Streisand and Maria Callas, and an Elke Sommerish Lady in Waiting whose adulterous relationship with Mr. Lee seems entirely gratuitous.
Nonetheless, admirers of 1960s Italian gothics need to re-examine this piece which is often unfairly dismissed, as it warrants far more attention and respect than such slush as "Terror Creatures From the Grave."
An Italian horror film based on Sheridan La Fanu's gothic vampire tale.......2006-08-31
"La Cripta e l'incubo" (which does not really translate as "Crypt of the Vampire," the DVD title) is a 1964 Italian horror film that stars Christopher Lee and has a nice sense of atmosphere, but not much else to recommend it for horror fans. Things are not looking good when you find out that the film was released under the titles "La Maledizione dei Karnstein" in Italy and "La Maldicion de los Karnstein" in Spain (it was a joint Italian-Spanish production), and originally known as "Crypt of Horror" in the U.K. and "Terror in the Crypt" in the U.S. It was also shown under the names "Carmilla," "Catharsis," "Karnstein," "The Crypt and the Nightmare," "The Curse of the Karnsteins," "The Karnstein Curse," and "The Vampire's Crypt." But this atmospheric horror film does have its moments.
The whole deal starts way back when Carmilla, a vampire witch, is being executed and with her dying breath lays a curse on her family, the Karnsteins. Several generations later Count Ludwig Karnstein (Lee) has sent for a historian, Klaus (Jose Campos), to discover what Carmilla looked like. That is because Rowena, the old, nurse is convinced that the Count's daughter Laura (Audrey Amber, a.k.a. Adriana Ambesi) has been possessed by the spirit of her ancestor and the curse is supposed to go into affect the next time there is a Karnstein who looks like Carmilla. The other major character in the story is Lyuba (Ursula Davis), who becomes Laura's friend and companion after being injured in a carriage accident near the castle. But when Laura has a nightmare about killing Lyuba by biting her neck, she wakes up to find Lyuba is alive, but has two bite marks on her neck. The next thing we know there are a whole bunch of vampire murders, and even Laura is starting to believe that it is Carmilla who is forcing her to kill from beyond the crypt. What else could be the explanation?
The script is based on the 1872 vampire novella "Carmilla" by Joseph Sheridan La Fanu, a 19th century Irish writer of Gothic tales and mystery novels. "Carmilla" actually predates Bram Stoker's "Dracula" and is considered by some to have been an influence on the most famous vampire novel of them all. However, there are so many people who had a hand in the story and the script that it is not surprising things get a bit muddled here. Director Camillo Mastrocinque, known as "Thomas Miller" for this production, does achieve a nice sense of atmosphere, aided by the black & white cinematography of Julio Ortas, and there are attempts to make the gothic elements a bit more up to date for the thrills and chills. I think "La Cripta e l'incubo" would have been stronger if they had spent the money getting a better female lead instead of spending it to have Lee's face and name on the poster, because he is not really a central character here. But there are enough nice little moments to justify rounding up on this one.

I read the previous review a few months ago, but chose to ignore his warning cause the cover art looked too good to pass up. I wish I would have listened.
Five minutes after the stock footage credits I knew I was in trouble. At this point in ILSA-SHE WOLF OF THE SS Ilsa had already banged a guy and chopped off his dip stick, but at that point in ELSA there was just a bunch of talking. Finally after some lame nudity I started the 2x play hoping to get to an exciting point. Thirty minutes later I was finished. Nothing had caught my eye. Boring nudity, deaths only by gunshot and two tame torture scenes. THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM starring Lance Henriksen had better violence. And a cool audio clip later used by Ministry on Psalm 69. "Liar. Blasphemer."
go with ilsa instead.......2003-04-02
this nazi/erotica exploitation "film" fails to deliver the goods in my opinion.for true over-the-top thrills, check out "ilsa she wolf of the ss"a much more exploitive(and entertaining)exploitation trash cinema masterpiece.

Superb in its original context.......2003-11-09
The airhead reviewer "drollere" can't step out of his/her timeframe to appreciate this movie, which shows very well the almost limitless energy and optimism of the early 1960s, a period I lived through and remember very well; it's hard to believe it ever happened, given the severely repressed and depressed state of modern culture. When film makers try to reproduce those times now, all they get is a fake surface, as in the 2003 movie, "Down with Love". I'm not saying that "The Nude Set" is a great movie, it's not, but it represents the SPIRIT of those times perfectly, and that's why I've watched it several times -- it takes me out of the Baby Bush Repressed Universe.
your grandma in pasties.......2003-03-20
total waste of time. the "star" never appears nude, but has various sistah relations with women who do. star also has a somewhat skanky boyfriend, with hipstah cool daddy-o relations with women who do. the women who do, do it sleepwalking, with tired music and tired costumes, hurrying through the sets not because they are nude but because they are embarrassed to be in this movie. bought it thinking, "oh, hey, shots of paris in the '50's," but it's almost all stage sets and cheaply done.

Description
Time Masters (Les Maitres du Temps) is a dazzling animated space epic from the director of the cult classic "Fantastic Planet" and the celebrated graphic artist Moebius, best known for his work on Heavy Metal magazine. Jaffar, a hero for hire, finds himself on the adventure of a lifetime as he races across the galaxy to save a young boy from a menacing evil. Can he stop the heartless Masters of Time from turning back the clock and stealing his home planet?
Customer Reviews:
Highly imaginative.......2005-08-13
Designed by the great graphic novelist Jean Giraud - AKA Moebius - Time Masters is a fascinating piece of animated sci-fi from France, that is well recommended for lovers of the genre and of the artist. Though the animation looks somewhat primitive by today's standards - though not for 1982, it looks quite better than any American cartoon of the time save Disney's, and don't forget that it wasn't a corporate effort like G.I. Joe or Transformers but an independent film with limited budget - but quickly enough you can learn the look past the rather bulky movements and simplistic faces of the characters and find yourself amazed at Moebius' amazing, seemingly endless imagination and creativity. The film is directed mainly at younger viewers - so it's not as liberated and wild as his more independent comics work or his contributions to Heavy Metal magazine - but his incredibly original vision is all there, in the out-of-this-world designs for the landscapes, the structures and the alien characters. Every minute of the film is a complete innovation in terms of design.
Plot-wise, there's not that much to be said for it; it's an intelligent but simplistic sci-fi story with a nice twist ending, which will, I think, appeal mainly to younger viewers. The characters are mostly simplistic and cartoonish, and largely unconvincing. These are the only reasons why I couldn't give Time Masters full marks; but these flaws take very little away from the pleasure of this film. As long as it focuses on the child character Piel, who is largely unaware of what goes on in the larger picture and is therefore touching and interesting, and not on the flat characters of Jaffar (good and brave for the sake of goodness and bravery), Matton (bad and greedy for the sake of badness and greediness) and the other adults; then it manages to be beautiful and gripping. And when any of the alien races are on screen, be they cute and cuddly or bizarre and frightening, you won't be able to look away. Time Masters is essential viewing for any lover of Moebius' work, and is well recommended for fans of science-fiction and of classic animation, and will surely become a treasured favorite for any of these.
French animation? Eh..........2004-08-30
When it came to branching out to see new movies I had no idea that I would ever witness a French anime-style movie. Yet this is that movie. The story begins when a ship crash-lands onto a planet, and the child-aged son of the pilot is left alone there. A rescue attempt is formed by, what we can assume to be, friends of the fathers, whom stay in contact with the boy throughout the attempted rescue.
This is what the plot should be taken at for face value. However, there is developing action on the rescue ship itself. All of the various sub-plots then are tied in with an unusual twist for the end. In addition, the movie is obviously in French, but with subtitles or the knowledge of the language, this should be no barrier for anyone.
Now, I cannot comment on how this film compares with other French animation, for this is the first I have seen though. I can say this though. First of all, the animation was not that terrific, mediocre at best. This movie is centered in plot, and not flashy graphics. However, although the plot is not really lacking, it just gets a little dry at times. Nonetheless, the movie had no horrible flaws and was really just, and I mean just, a decent movie. Mildly entertaining, and only worth it for the last half I'd say, this movie only really deserves one view.
Time Masters.......2003-08-31
Having seen Time Masters on tv many years ago, which was dubbed into English. I have, sofar, been unable to track down a copy (DVD or VHS) of this version, (ie. with the english dubbing). Any ideas out there?.
The film itself was great with a fair few interesting deviations along the way, (though I would not have enjoyed it as much, if the tv version had been with english subtitles).
In all, a film I shall, for one, never forget.
a truly riveting film.......2002-12-08
I first saw this film when I was in my early teens and was as enthralled with it then as I am now. I haven't seen 'Fantastic Planet' so, unlike some of the other disillusioned reviewers, I cannot compare Time Masters to what they obviously consider a classic film. I may also venture that those reviewers did not see this film when they were younger because, if they had, they would no doubt look at it from a different perspective.
The animation and production may not be up to hollywood standards but Time Masters is truly a work of art and a film which has captured my imagination for almost 20 years. I am not an 'art' film afficionado and so see this film for what it is - wonderful!
Time Masters - Review not based on DVD.......2002-12-06
The animation, of course, is not that great. It does, in fact, at times seems Scooby-dooish. But the idea of the film, especially if you are a serious sci-fi fan, should please you.
I cannot comment on this particular edition, since my review is based on the countless times I've seen this film in the theater dubbed in Russian. But I was pleased to find a copy in New York years after, and was not disappointed.
The film is not recommended for children. But it is both a slightly phylosophical film, and a puzzlement for those who are interested in the time-space continium. The story itself must've been great, just as the planet of the apes, before it turned into a joke.
