Throughout The Straight Story, 73-year-old Alvin Straight (Richard Farnsworth) gazes calmly at the night sky, as if the stars were reflections of his own memories. Alvin's eyesight is bad and his daughter (Sissy Spacek) is slightly retarded and unable to drive, so he's traveling from Laurens, Iowa to Mt. Zion, Wisconsin on a riding John Deere lawn mower. It's slow going, so there's plenty of time to stop for the night and ponder the cosmos. Alvin's journeying to visit his ailing brother; they haven't spoken in years, and it's time to make peace. Along the way, he befriends a variety of nice folks, and you have to ask yourself... Is this really a David Lynch movie?

It's a miracle that this G-rated Disney film was made by a director whose work is often described as twisted and bizarre. But Lynch is too complex an artist to be labeled, and he brings charm, grace, and kindness to his fact-based telling of The Straight Story--not to mention a serenity rarely found in movies anymore. It's a film of moments--funny, odd, quietly spiritual--and this simple tale of a man, a lawnmower, and rural hospitality becomes a genuine Lynchian odyssey, unlike any film you've seen but as welcoming as a cup of lemon tea with honey. Best of all, it's a fitting tribute to the career of veteran stuntman-actor Farnsworth who, at age 79, plays Alvin Straight to sheer perfection, his face a subtle roadmap to a broad spectrum of emotional destinations. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Based on the true story that captured the hearts of America, THE STRAIGHT STORY is one of those rare films offering powerful, uplifting entertainment for audiences of all ages. Directed by acclaimed director David Lynch (WILD AT HEART, MULHOLLAND DRIVE), this gentle, inspiring film celebrates the human spirit. Richard Farnsworth (MISERY, THE NATURAL) stars as Alvin Straight -- a no-nonsense man who has never been one to lean on others. Now at an age when his eyesight denies him the ability to drive and walking is accomplished only with the help of two canes, Alvin lives a quiet life with his daughter Rose (Sissy Spacek). But when the call comes that Alvin's estranged brother Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton, THE GREEN MILE) has suffered a debilitating stroke, Alvin embarks on a dangerous and emotional journey to make amends. With little money, but plenty of patience and tenacity, he climbs aboard his 1966 John Deere lawnmower and plots the 260-mile course from his small Iowa town to Lyle's home in Wisconsin. Filmed along the actual route that the real Alvin Straight traveled in 1994, THE STRAIGHT STORY is a heartwarming and poignant drama chronicling Alvin's six-week odyssey and the many lives he touches along the way.

A milestone of cinematic eroticism, The Story of O was an art house sensation in 1975, and it's still worthy of intelligent discussion. As with the controversial French novella by Pauline Réage, reactions to Just Jaeckin's sumptuous adaptation range from moral outrage to masturbatory indulgence, yet this remains one of the few sex films that stand the test of time (and a lot of academic study). Championed by practitioners of bondage and discipline and vilified by feminists, this metaphorical "love dream" (as Jaeckin has called it) follows the beautiful fashion photographer "O" (Corrine Clery) as she, like many gorgeously naked women before her, is "trained" for a seemingly satisfying life of love and discipline, her freedom sacrificed to the man (Anthony Steel) whom she willingly obeys. The debate whether Jaeckin's feminine-empowerment ending, which differs from that of the novella, justifies a story of humiliating submission is just one more reason why The Story of O endures. (Note: This DVD presents the 97-minute version of the film, edited by the director to improve pacing and not for purposes of censorship.) --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars No Star if it were possible.......2007-06-08

I was so disappointed by this purchase and this film. Being a fan of the book I was very excited to see how they translated it on to film. What I found out is that they didn't translate it at all. They LOOSELY followed the story line and took the liberty to add and change which in my opinion, changed the story all together. I threw this movie away and would not reccomend it to any true Story of O fan.

3 out of 5 stars A bit clumsy.......2007-05-15

Somehow, I was expecting better acting, knowing this would be a major undertaking based on a controversial book. Sadly, the film just doesn't work. There's no arguing Corrine Clery's beauty but Udo Kier is completely miscast.

2 out of 5 stars you're better off reading the book.......2007-04-04

The book is amazing; this movie adaptation is quite poor. Although the actress who plays O is quite beautiful, and there are some fairly erotic scenes, this movie is deeply flawed, and I can't recommend it. The plotline gets totally garbled, especially toward the end, to the point where it runs entirely contrary to the book's intention on several key philosophical and psychological points. Second, the actor who plays Stephen is absolutely one of the worst casting choices I've ever seen; doesn't fit the role one bit. So please, read the book. If you've already read the book and love it, it is probably worth your while to eventually see this film, but expect to be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Is this really what most "normal people" call erotic?.......2007-02-17

This is one of the most boring films I ever watched. There is nothing erotic in it. The whole story is perverted with a poor, innocent but very stupid woman submitting to the sadist fantasies of various "lovers" she is introduced. I put inverted comas in lovers because none of them have a single tender erotic moment with her, but instead they brutally beat her and rape her in the presence of others, who seem to be totally oblivious to the proceedings.

5 out of 5 stars Not dominant submissive but metaphor.......2007-02-15

I have not yet read the originating novel, but I have just finished watching this movie for the second time. I was renting it. Now I'm going to buy it - one of very few, as I almost never buy movies.

I must say that I found much more in it the second time. The first time not only did the physical and emotional whippings disturb me but, just as much, O's willing apparent debasement and her masters' disregard for her feelings - they only seemed to care about her obedience. This is an anti-turnon for me. The sex scenes are not really convincing, nor are the whippings. I realized that I, as audience, was not being asked to accept that much pain or that much pleasure from either.

The male characters are much more flat than the female ones, particularly O, as if they really didn't count. And there was something in this most beautiful woman's portrayal which left me thinking it wasn't at all simple.

Bottom line, it is abundantly clear that this is far, far more than an S&M movie, nor is it about bondage, submission and domination, or any other kind of sexual perversion or obsession.

Some phrases stuck out to me, although I'm not sure I'm quoting exactly accurately. The narrator said the O loved everything and everyone that came to her because it came to her by request from her lover. She said that O knew that if she lasted to the end that all would be given to her. O's apparent peace of mind about everything that happened to her simply didn't gybe with a debasement/submissive/sexual perversion sort of story. She definitely does not come across as sick. She, at times, was as deeply terrified or ashamed as any normal woman would be in the circumstances and yet continued freely to accept the demands of obedience to those who loved her and those who didn't. I was puzzled at how easily she accepted that Rene was no longer her lover, and continued to do exactly the same thing with Sir Stefan. All of this indicated that something much deeper than anything relatively superficial about perversion, infatuation, and so-on was going on. It made far too deep an impression the first time I saw the movie, even without understanding it. It made me think that it was, as another reviewer mentioned, hitting some archetypes, and something deep in the human spirit.

I began to think of the whole story as an extended metaphor about the demands and rewards of love. When we love, we willingly go through hell for the sake of love -- not just for the sake of the lover. The love relationship places heavy demands of obedience on us. It whips us and debases us -- love and its intimacy always find our weaknesses, and their exposure makes us feel naked, beaten and debased. But love always allows us the freedom to opt out, as did O's lovers and masters. And something deep within us always knows that, if we succumb to the abasement we may feel, and accept the beating our feelings take, that love, real human love, marks us forever as O was marked, and enbles us to love and be loved fully and deeply, and gives us peace -- indeed, it grants us everything. O shows us how wonderful it can become if we are not overly defensive about our selves in the service of love.

The movie itself does not look as dated as you would think for a 1974 movie -- actually, not at all. The color is a little unsaturated compared to the kind of color we have today, and this contributes to the fantasy that is clearly being spun. I happen to enjoy naked women a lot, and there are a lot of them in this movie, fully frontal, more than a glimpse, naked and unashamed. There are few scenes that are fully clothed for very long. I thought all were beautiful women, self-possessed, graceful, fully feminine and sensual without being affected.

The two brief closeup shots of "female genitalia", as one reviewer put it, (although he apparently didn't even notice them), are exquisitely done - just close enough, just long enough, just modest enough, just open enough.

There is a visual potpourri of modern day (for 1974), turn-of-the-century wealth and romanticism, and even some medieval castles and costumes. The only thing that bothered me even temporarily was Sir Stefan's overly-coiffed hairdo, but it didn't take long to get past it. It's a legitimate part of his character.

And the best comment of all came from my wife when the movie was over. And I hasten to add that there are absolutely no submissive or dominative tendencies in her at all. She said, "Wierd. Wow. That's one very sexy movie".

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful film........2007-06-15

What can I possibly add to the praising wording that the majority of these reviewers already have put forth? Well, I would simply just like to say that I believe that this movie has a very rare quality. It is very down to earth in a natural and liberating way and is basically just a story about this old man who wants to make up with his brother, which he haven't seen for ten years, before its to late.

He has no drivers license and not much money, so he decides to make the long journey across America, on an old lawn mover - and as one discovers along the way, he has really made up his mind to fulfil his decision - and that even in spite of many of the peoples kind help, which includes an offer to drive him to his destination - because as I see it; that there is almost an symbolic meaning to his way of doing it, which you'll find out at the very end of the film.

Sounds boring??? Anything but... this is simply beautiful and a great and very different effort from director David Lynch. This film is almost magical in its simplicity and complete matter of course. Just check it out for yourself. If you enjoyed "Round About Smith" - well then this film could appeal to you, although that there really isn't any directly comparison.

5 out of 5 stars Great Story.......2007-05-26

I consider this a classic story since it reminds me of growing up in upstate New York. You can't help but end up loving this character.

5 out of 5 stars One of a kind.......2007-05-20

I enjoyed this movie for many reasons. The acting is natural, as are the actors. It is a movie I can watch with my grandchildren and not be embarrassed by the content. The Straight Story is touching, warm, real and done with intelligence.

This is a movie I will watch several times without tiring of it; there is something new to see each time I play it. The Straight Story shows the wisdom, value and knowledge older people have and this is something totally ignored by our society - a culture that chases after the young, who chase after who-knows-what.

Bravo to all who created this art piece.

5 out of 5 stars A great movie EVERYONE should see........2007-05-13

A great family movie. Dont expect any crashes, explosions, or special effects. A true story about a simple man on a quest to visit his dying brother. This movie needs to be seen from beginning to end, so don't start it unless you have the time to watch all of it. The director did not allow a chapter guide in the DVD for this reason.

5 out of 5 stars The Straight Story.......2007-05-12

It was a heartwarming story, like a book and movie should be.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tony Comstock invents a new genre of intimate, arousing documentaries starring real couples.......2007-04-05

Tony Comstock is the creator and master of a new genre of films: explicit couples' sexuality documentaries. Comstock states that "intent to arouse" is often cited as the dividing line between art and porn. Of all the emotions a director might hope to induce in an audience, arousal remains the last taboo, and Tony Comstock takes it head-on.

Marie and Jack: A Hardcore Love Story marked Comstock's creation of the genre. Marie and Jack are a husband and wife pair who met while the both worked in the porn industry. Both are still active in the industry, and their on-screen antics are completely separate from what goes on behind their bedroom door. In intimate conversation, they reveal the ins and outs of their marriage and love life. They delight in the fact that their home sex life is relatively vanilla, with a few key positions and some signature moves that each knows turns the other on.

When Marie and Jack agreed to star in this documentary, they made a pact not to edit their sex life for the camera, but to create a revealing and intimate portrait of their life in the bedroom. This is the hands-down winner for any couple looking to watch erotic film together, and Comstock offers a number of other titles in this series for viewer who get hooked on the idea. Matt & Khym and Xana & Dax are two titles available from Amazon. I only wished they also carried his first-rate gay male feature Damon & Hunter.

5 out of 5 stars The search pays off!.......2007-03-26

A couple of years back I went seeking sexy films I might watch with my husband - something fun and erotic that we could share. Having trawled through acres of trite, poorly crafted, not very inspiring videos and on the verge of giving up the search, I had the luck to find Tony and Peggy Comstock and Comstock Films. I've been a fan ever since - hence the reviews!

Marie and Jack: A Hardcore Love Story, from director Tony Comstock, has been talked about a good deal and justifiably cooed over since its release in 2003. Reviewers one by one have succumbed to the film's charm. They've no doubt been beguiled, like I was, by the fresh faced enthusiasm that Jack and Marie demonstrate for each other, engaged by their good natured humour and captivated by witnessing the intimacy and pleasure of authentic sex between this real life couple, all skillfully captured buy a clever filmmaker.

As I discovered on my search, Marie and Jack seems to represent a rare find in explicit erotic material -- a film that truly celebrates sex as a joyous, intimate connection between people and does so in a way that clearly reminds us of why beautiful lovemaking is so enthralling and pleasurable to watch. I highly recommend this film.

5 out of 5 stars What a sex film should be.......2007-03-12

Along with his wife Peggy, filmmaker Tony Comstock makes a name for himself in filming real couples having sex. These are not the horrible "amateur" films one can find everywhere on the internet, but lovingly filmed and beautifully lit near-documentaries of couples who genuinely enjoy each other. "Marie and Jack: A Hardcore Love Story" was the first Comstock film, and if you have high standards for erotic films you won't be disappointed.

The couple--Marie Silva, a porn actress who works under the name of Aria, and her husband Jack Bravo, also a porn actor--talk frankly about their relationship and how their sex life intermeshes with their professional lives. Interspersed with their interview are the sex scenes. Despite their professions neither Marie nor Jack look like typical porn stars--they're good-looking, but not gorgeous; there are no fake breasts or painted faces or overly buff bodies or bad fake tans. About the most outrageous thing to be seen on either of them are Marie's silver-painted nails! The chemistry between them is palpable, which makes the sex scenes scorchingly hot. There is no overdone moaning or screaming or weird positions. It is voyeurism at its most intimate, but with much better camera angles.

This is a great couples film, as well as a good introduction for the sex film neophyte. Comstock Films has released three other films since "Marie and Jack"--one, "Matt and Khym: Better Than Ever" is also available on Amazon--but "Marie and Jack" remains a sentimental favorite of mine. It's always enjoyable to watch people having sex who look like they're actually having fun. Thank you, Tony and Peggy!

Fred Zinnemann's epic drama is a splendid showcase for Audrey Hepburn, who stars as the young nun Sister Luke, who is deeply spiritual yet conflicted about whether or not she can conform to convent life. Though the film is a mesmerizing--and quite leisurely--two and a half hours, its plot is fairly simple--young Gabrielle (Hepburn) enters the convent pledging her life to God, learns the disciplines associated with the life, receives her dream assignment of going to the Congo as a missionary nurse, and once there, is forced to face whether she is meant for the rigorous life of poverty, chastity, and most difficult of all, obedience. The film does a marvelous job of portraying the challenges of cloistered life without being either off-putting or overly romantic. And Hepburn, sometimes with only her eyes, communicates all the drive, faith, and conflict of a young woman so torn. --Anne Hurley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Transcendent!.......2007-07-01

This magnificent film of 1957 still shines in all its luminosity after 50 years. It reminds us of the heights to which Hollywood could rise in the old studio system, which invested its resources on quality: the actors, the director, the music, the costumes, and the splendid genuine locations, from the canals and bridges of Bruges and Antwerp to the sweeping expanse of the Congo river (The scenes at the leper colony, among many others, are fascinating.). "The Nun's Story" allows us to glimpse a slice of history of the 1930s, as it unfolds on two continents. It gives us a look back into a society, both sacred and secular, that World War II was to change irrevocably.

The superb performances of Audrey Hepburn, Peggy Ashcroft, Edith Evans, Mildred Natwick, and Peter Finch speak for themselves, and it would be superfluous of me to comment on them further.

I merely wonder how many of the hundreds of films now churned out in Hollywood every year (the millions of dollars spent making them; their celebrity actors; their special effects) will still shine as brightly as "The Nun's Story" 50 years from now?

Relatively few, I think!

5 out of 5 stars The Nun's Story.......2007-06-26

Zinnemann's "The Nun's Story," showcasing the luminous Audrey Hepburn in her prime, contemplates hardship, devotion, and a very special kind of self-realization. A literate, nuanced drama with size, scope and color, the film boasts superb location photography and uniformly fine performances, both from the young leads and two English Dames in support: namely, Edith Evans and Peggy Ashcroft, playing senior nuns who guide Sister Luke along her often thorny path. Based on Kathryn Hulme's autobiographical novel, "Story" is an affecting, heartfelt epic of inner struggle.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2007-04-25

Not only is the story itself a true statement on women brought up in a certain manner, I find it the story of one woman's awakening. And Audrey was perfect for this tale. I love this movie

4 out of 5 stars Stumbling Perfectionist in a Fractured World.......2007-04-06

`The Nun's Story' is an engaging tale about an aspiring nun who wishes to serve in the missions of the Belgian Congo. Multi-faceted Audrey Hepburn makes the story absorbing enough with her excellent performance as Sister Burt. There's the drama of the Congo, World War II is breaking out in Europe, and her vocation is on the line, but mainly we care about her own development.

The inner conflict is written all over Hepburn's face as she grapples with self-will. Obedience being the hardest vow, she, nevertheless, finds perfectionism, a manifestation of pride, her biggest stumbling block. Having a low tolerance for her own failures, she meets into agnostic-skeptic Dr. Fortunati played with colorful zest by Peter Finch. He challenges her motivation and makes her contemplate "a change of habit" to sport another movie's title. Then, with war beginning in Europe, she struggles with the community's edict to remain nuetral.

Constrasting Hepburn's role in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's,' she really demonstrates a conflicted, resolute, yet fragile nun with great skill. Hepburn is the centerpiece because even with a good story, she makes us care deeply about her character. The movie makers painstakingly put together a movie that really understood the religious aspects and got it right. Absorbing and genuine, `The Nun's Story' makes the movie a must-see mission.

1 out of 5 stars I would give it less than a zero rating!!!!.......2007-04-06

What a horror of an example to others. This is a story about a nun and her temptations about her calling. Well, in the end she fails and gives up her vocation. What a let down of a movie. As if it is the most impossable thing to persevere in one's vocation as a nun. Nice one hollywood, another blow to the religious. I felt it my duty to warn those who wish to obtain this dvd, thats why I gave away the story. audrey hepburn does a disservice to our religious by playing the role of an apostate nun, shame on her! An Audrey fan no more. This is not in the same class as 'The song of Bernadette', 'A Man for all seasons', 'Therese', 'El Cid', etc.

Fred Zinnemann's epic 1959 drama The Nun's Story is a splendid showcase for Audrey Hepburn, who stars as the young nun Sister Luke, who is deeply spiritual yet conflicted about whether or not she can conform to convent life.

If you find during the 160-minute running time of The Shoes of the Fisherman (1968) that you don't like the plot, wait 10 minutes. It will surely change and there will be another story thread to entice you. The screenplay is literally all over the map: Siberia, where Archbishop Kiril Lakota, played splendidly by Anthony Quinn, has been exiled to a work camp in the oppressive Soviet regime; Moscow, where a genially scene-chewing Laurence Olivier plays a Soviet ruler with history with Lakota; China, where famine threatens to bring the world of the late '60s to the brink of World War III; and Rome, where Lakota travels after being freed (and where dissolute reporter David Janssen does his best to groove on the Swinging Sixties). Yet despite its flaws, the movie's central drama is riveting: the current Pope dies suddenly, and for a good bit of the film, viewers are treated to the Vatican's inner workings on the election of a new Pope. The events unfold at a leisurely pace, which allows you to drink in the spectacle and wonder of the ancient traditions. The Alex North Oscar-nominated score is lovely, and Quinn's performance is the somber-with-a-humble-twinkle glue that holds the film together. Anyone interested in the traditions and rituals of the Vatican will find plenty to savor.

The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima tells the story--through an admittedly Hollywood prism--of one of the most beloved Catholic legends of the 20th century. Three young shepherd children in the remote Portuguese mountain town Fatima reported seeing a vision in 1917 of "a beautiful lady" who spoke to them of strife, war and peace and the love of Jesus. Soon the word spread, and throngs, teetering on mobs, gathered near the site for a glimpse of what they believed to be Mary, mother of Jesus. The children remained steadfast in their account, despite threats from the church and the government, and the final appearance of the lady, on Oct. 13, 1917, was accompanied by strange apparitions in the sky that have yet to be explained by science. The movie is well-made and -acted, especially by a radiant Susan Whitney, who plays the oldest child, Lúcia Abóbora dos Santos. The screenplay takes some liberties with the facts: the lovable jokester-sidekick character of Hugo is fictitious, and one wonders if perhaps a few of Our Lady's cautions about the multitude of evil things happening in 1917 Russia might have been heard through a Cold War filter. But the 1952 film is moving and is a reminder that big studios once routinely, and profitably, released religious-themed movies, to audiences who surely would appreciate some of the same today. --A.T. Description

The Films of Faith Collection features three tales of spiritual discovery which celebrate lives of purpose and inspiration, The Nun's Story, The Shoes of the Fisherman and The Miracle of Our Lady Fatima. Audrey Hepburn, Peter Finch, Anthony Quinn, Laurence Olivier and John Gielgud are among the top stars of the films; bonus features include the vintage featurette The Shoes of the Fisherman and theatrical trailers. The Nun's Story (1959) is an unforgettable revelation of the seldom-seen world behind convent walls. Audrey Hepburn portrays Sister Luke, a nun whose life journey leads her to a much desired position as a surgical nurse in a Belgian Congo missionary hospital. After she returns to her native Belgium, World War II breaks out and she finds her commitment seriously tested -- torn between the pull of the Resistance and the church's neutrality. Directed by four-time Academy Award winner Fred Zinnemann, The Nun's Story earned eight Oscar nominations including Best Picture.

From Morris L. West's bestseller, The Shoes of the Fisherman is both an urgent tale of geopolitical intrigue and a fascinating look at Vatican procedure. Anthony Quinn plays a newly-freed Russian political prisoner thrust into the spotlight as Pope Kiril Lakota. Laurence Olivier, Oskar Werner, John Gielgud, David Janssen and Leo McKern enrich a production which was nominated for two Academy Awards and won a Golden Globe for Alex North's score.

The Miracle of Our Lady Fatima (1952) thoughtfully recreates the 1917 actual events that brought hope and new religious fervor to a war-ravaged world. Three peasant youths in Fatima, Portugal see a vision: a woman in a cloud of light offering words of devotion and prophecy. The children face torture by the anticlerical government but are soon embraced by the faithful masses drawn by the promise of a miracle. Director John Brahm skillfully balances simplicity and spectacle, all powerfully supported by Max Steiner's Oscar-nominated score.

This is a warm remembrance of Christian witness that will speak to a universal audience. The Nun's Story is a fairly accurate and touching tale of one woman's quest to follow her heart just as the world falls into war. This is a great example of the Catholic Church in the early 20th century. With Shoes of the Fisherman, you have a great story of a Pope from the Slavic World, more than a decade before Pope John Paul II. The turmoil of an ancient church trying to deal with a modern world is very well told and is still quite relevant.

If you're looking for a film adaptation of the novel "The Story of O", you won't get it here.

What you'll get is a fairly boring soft core movie with a bit of badly done kink at the end. It's also subtitled... including very useful translations of "Ah! Ah! Ah!".

If you're looking for "The Story of O", buy the 1975 version or try to track down a copy of the 1992 "The Story of O, the Series". Don't waste your money on this one.

Description

In a controversial career that flayed every envelope of cinematic excess, nothing can prepare you for this stunning thriller from the infamous director of ZOMBIE and THE BEYOND. Jean Sorel ( BELLE DE JOUR) stars as an arrogant San Francisco doctor trapped between his sultry mistress ( Elsa Martinelli of BLOOD AND ROSES) and an amoral stripper ( Marisa Mell of DANGER: DIABOLIK) who bears an uncanny resemblance to his recently deceased and possibly murdered wife. What follows has been called Fulci's first true masterpiece, where sexual obsession, cruel deception and depraved murder all come together in one unforgettable PERVERSION STORY.

John Ireland and Faith Domergue co-star in this gripping giallo - also known as ONE ON TOP OF THE OTHER - that features eye-popping nudity, provocative locations (including the gas chamber at San Quentin) and a badass jazz score by Riz Ortolani ( MONDO CANE, KILL BILL). Severin Films is proud to present PERVERSION STORY in a startling new transfer from the original vault negative thought to be lost for more than 35 years!

4 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Little B-Movie/Film-Noir.......2007-04-16

Having recently seen Quentin Tarantino & Robert Rodriguez' Grindhouse I was reminded of the look and feel of their little films while watching "Perversion Story." It's a B-movie that takes place in San Francisco, yet is in Italian (although there's an option to watch it in dubbed English); It has the music of a 1980's film-noir (i.e., "Body Heat"), but the look of a B-movie/early 70's porn. But it's actually a pretty interesting mystery story that's worth watching.

It's about a doctor named George DeMurrier, whose wife Susan suffers from asthma. Going on a "business trip" George leaves his wife in the company of a nurse...When he returns, Susan is dead and she has left him a $1 million dollar insurance policy that he had no idea about. As he comes to the realization that his wife is actually dead, he ends up at a stripclub (called the Roaring Twenties, how is that for cheesy?) where he sees a woman that looks exactly like her. Well, almost. This woman just has a different hair and eye color, but the resemblance is incredible. Intrigued, George begins having an affair with the woman, Monica, while the police begin investigating George into whether he had a little more to do with his wife's death than he lets on.

Despite it's shabby look and provocative title "Perversion Story" is actually a pretty tame and entertaining movie. The movie isn't rated, but it would be an 'R' for "Some Nudity." It's title is really just a ploy to get people to rent the movie (and let's face it, it works). It's not the best film ever made, but if you can look past the cheesy-ness of it, it's not bad.

1 out of 5 stars Eugenie: The story of her jump into perversion.......2005-05-09

I seem to have only gotten the cliff notes on my dvd and not the story.

Innocent Eugenie is take to an island by a rich couple who do business with her father. He knows they are interested in exploiting her for sexual purposes but they promise nothing too strong.

Well, they constantly drug Eugenie through her drinks and the wife starts the "journey into perversion" by having them bath and wash together.

There are a few steps but very few indeed and soon Eugenie is happily involved in Satanic rituals and removing body parts from participants.

What kind of story is this? Eugenie doesn't take much to be corrupted. We don't see much conflict or the psychology of any transformation. It all just happens. I don't see any convincing story of a seduction into this huge personality change at all.

I really don't know what people see in this film and how it gets such great reviews. I guess when the "erotic" scenes are red and blurred, this causes people to feel it is sophisticated camera work and film style and are impressed by it.

Instead of being a journey into perversion, innocent Eugenie jumps right into Satanic rituals with no explanation. I don't see anything compelling about this at all.

5 out of 5 stars More Substance Than Sleaze, Better Than Expected.......2005-04-30

I was surprised at this picture to say the least, and in several respects. While seasoned fans of sleaze are disappointed for what is a rather tame sexual exhibit, I think people looking for an interesting diversion from typical period films of the same era would actually like this. There is a solid plot, there is lush scenery and a time capsule feel for the late 60's, depiction of social degredation amongst the wealthy class, exploitation of youth, betrayal, revenge, and murder, all rolled into a cleverly filmed psychedlic dreamlike piece of art-house cinema.

Franco was on top of his profession with this picture. As I began watching, it seemed to unfold like a fluffy spy movie from the 60's, except there was no secret agent anywhere to be found. There was something more sinister about this picture though, with an introduction by Christopher Lee, which sets the tone for events later revealed, and offers a bit of gore and blood-feasting to boot, but not so much as it is overwhelming or nauseating.

The story centers around an aristocratic, incestuos brother-sister couple, who wish to sacrifice a young virgin beauty to the secret order of which they are members. Through manipulation of the more pleasurable kind, the sister is able to convince young Eugenie's father to allow Eugenie to stay with her on her private island estate for one weekend. Eugenie is ultimately drugged, and seduced. And when the members of the order arrive on the island, the plot thickens and unravels, and concludes in a twist most unexpected from what I anticipated going into this.

Franco employs some clever techniques here rarely seen in films today(red lights, lengthy out of focus shots, ambient music), and creates a world which captures images of beauty, hallucination, perversion, obsession, degredation, violence, and retribution. He also does this very tastefully considering some of what is out there today in this genre of film. The lead actors and actresses were cast perfectly, and there is little ham here which often goes along with movies of this type. The soundtrack is also mesmerizing, like a dream.

This was my first Franco film, and while I do find his other titles from this period in his career entertaining, I still feel that this one is his best overall as far as technique, casting, storyline, attention to detail, photography, atmosphere, style, and impact. While its taboos may have turned heads in '69, I think today most mainstream movie-goers of typical R-Rated fanfare would be comfortable watching this. Wrongfully catagorized as "adult", although there is a fair amount of nudity, this film is highly entertaining and enjoyable. 4.5 Stars.

1 out of 5 stars Soledad Miranda-Where are you?.......2004-06-06

I came to this film after watching Eugenie de Sade, also made by Jess Franco; but, sadly, not availabe in America at the moment. The contrast between the two is startling. I love Eugenie de Sade; but of course, that film had Soledad Miranda in the title part and this film does not, which may explain a lot.

This film fails for three reasons: the acting, the direction, and the script.

Firstly, the acting. To say that Marie Liljedahl is no Soledad Franco would be a little unfair; after all, who is? That she made her name as a porn star rather than as an actress is apparant throughout every scene in this film. Half the time she seems to fumble in front of the camera wondering what to do. Maybe she is looking for direction from Jess Franco which, apparantly, she doesnt get. She isn't helped by the fact that this is an English language production and her voice is so-very-obviously dubbed. She also has to play opposite Maria Rohm, who excels, as does Christopher Lee.

Secondly, the direction. Jess Franco comes over like an amateur film maker with no real idea of what to do. His over use of the red filter, his clumsy editing, and his inability to direct Marie Liljedahl damns the film completely. Although this is obviously made be the same director that made Eugenie de Sade the following year, his flair seems to have deserted him here. Maybe he needs Soledad Miranda to inspire him?

Thirdly, the script. The idea of an innocent girl being slowly corrupted until she becomes evil is a fascinating theme. Sadly, the script handles it in such a kack-handed manner that I failed completely to believe that Eugenie would behave in such a way. She would be traumatised by her experiences, not corrupted.

So there you have it. One Goddamnawful film! It has one redeeming point: Marie Liljedahl's bottom. (This is what the one star is for) If she wasn't voted Rear of the Year in 1969 when this film was made, then she should have been. However, if this is not reason enough to buy this DVD, then buy Eugenie de Sade instead-it's available from Amazon UK. Eugenie de Sade - Now there is a minor classic.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2003-10-28

I've just seen one of the most compelling films made in Europe. The cast of the film pulled all the stops to make it really intense and erotic. The good things about that though is that Jesus Franco doesn't have to be explicit to shock or anything but leaves everything to your imagination. The only down-turn in it all, is that the film maybe finishes to quickly! Once the beautiful Eugenie gets on Long Island you don't want to see the end of the film! She's drugged and abused but to her it's still an experience that she finds intriguing and exciting! I recommend you see this film and I bet you'll go and try to find a similar as soon as it ends. Marvellous!

3 out of 5 stars Okay for a rainy day, as they say........2003-09-04

The problem I have with Franco films is this: they're full of beautiful naked women that really don't do much but lounge around. An erotic film should have something remotely akin to a sexual encounter. Even in 1969 they could do that, especially in Europe. Well, there is some minor lesbianism in a scene or 2, but....
I'm not going to get into plot details because few people in this film's crowd are interested in sitting through this to critique the plot. If it's truly based on a De Sade work then great, but from my experience a De Sade tale honestly transferred to film would in reality be nothing less than XXX rated (and in some cases a snuff film). So clearly there are elements missing from this flick in the translation from book to movie, as it's not pornographic. Just a PSA to De Sade literary fans.
Franco--with his total of 3 movies bearing the "Eugenie" title--gives De Sade a bad name, believe it or not. The books are much better, and not as tame as Franco makes them out to be.
However, compared to his contemporary Jean Rollin (who was comfortable making the occasional porn film, as it happens), Franco certainly had decent budgets to work with and clearly used them well. He gets sexy actresses, and nice movie sets which fit the story. His direction isn't pedestrian, but he must have skipped school on the day that really important filming techniques were discussed, such as keeping the audience engrossed with the characters. So he decided to make up for that by parading nude women around, and I will definitely not complain! It's always a plus when a film has nudity with a purpose, and I think Jess Franco typically manages to provide that purpose.
"Justine" is probably the highlight of his career, but this particular Eugenie film, overall, is actually pretty entertaining. Not something you'd want to watch again and again, but one that you'll find yourself wanting to pull out of the shelf on occasion.

4 out of 5 stars Best of the three.......2006-03-18

Erotic Ghost Story (the first film) is a thoroughly enjoyable romp featuring Chinese ghosts (wonderful creatures that can one moment be a whirlwind, then the next moment a voluptuous seductive vixen, then a savage wolf, then a zombie-like skeleton), with zany comedy, over-the -top "special effects", tons of nudity and simulated sex scenes.

Not that is pornographic - far from it. It is not even "soft-porn", or at least not in the usual sense. Having said that, the imaginative nature of the sex scenes somehow manage to be both titillating and comedic at the same time!

I disagree that it is a re-make of the Witches of Eastwick - the latter couldn't even touch this in terms of comedy and / or imagination.

This first film is far and away the best, the others (Erotic Ghost Story 2 and 3) are very poor imitations hoping to cash in on the success of the first.

My only complaint with this one is that I only own it on video tape.

I ordered the DVD from Amazon, and about 4 months later (after several notified extensions in the expected delivery date) I was told it was unavailable (Feb 2006) and I was not charged. But I am still looking forward to the time it becomes available again.

If you like Chinese films, Chinese comedy, nudity, or zany sex, you wont be disappointed. If you like all of these then this is the film for you.

1 out of 5 stars Worst of all Four!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-08-13

Just take my words. I watched all four "Erotic Ghost Stories". I could live with the other three. But this one was terrible.

4 out of 5 stars nobody missed the point.......2000-09-20

Just wanted to tell everybody to ignore the review by the guy who said this movie isn't softcore porn. That genius thought everyone was writing reviews for "Chinese Ghost Story," not "Erotic Ghost Story." There is no giant tongue monster, flying swordsman named Big Beard, etc in this movie. "Erotic Ghost Story" is basically a loose remake of The Witches of Eastwick with tons of nudity, some gore - basically a Hong Kong cat III (the equivalent of a T&A b-flick). It's enjoyable though and easy on the eyes. Just don't watch it with your kids.

4 out of 5 stars witches of eastwick with flying warriors and oriental babes.......2000-06-13

In Hong Kong a CAT III rated film such as this one gives the filmakers the opportunity to show more sex and violence and this one definately falls into the sex category. Don't get me wrong though there is much more to the film than sex. The story is stolen from "The Witches of Eastwick" the three witches are now free beautiful oriental girls one of whom is oriental babe Amy Yip who fall for a man who is really an evil demon - the whole production is very charming and colourful with some great hire wire fight scenes and splendid sets and costumes that are visually pleasing. There's loads of sex too but it's largely inoffensive - sometimes it seems theres a little too much screen time given to the sexual antics of the ladies but who's complaining! All in all this a great fun little gem of a film and is highly recommeded to anyone who enjoys cult/camp cinema.

5 out of 5 stars The other reviewers miss the point of this movie.......2000-03-01

This film is a fantasy/martial arts epic, not a softcore porno film. The closest American equivalent would be "Big Trouble in Little China," which pales in comparison to this gem. The fight scenes and special effects are convincing and spectacular, featuring fireballs, flying swordsmen, and a giant tongue monster.

Apparently, some people bought this DVD based solely on the box art and title.
