A hit in Europe but a flop in the U.S.--where it was trimmed, rescored, and given a new ending--Luc Besson's The Big Blue has endured as a minor cult classic for its gorgeous photography (both on land and underwater) and dreamy ambiance. Jean-Marc Barr is a sweet and sensitive but passive presence as Jacques, a diver with a unique connection to the sea. He has the astounding ability to slow his heartbeat and his circulation on deep dives, "a phenomenon that's only been observed in whales and dolphins… until now," remarks one scientist. Kooky New York insurance adjuster Joanna (Rosanna Arquette at her most delightfully flustered and endearingly sexy best) melts after falling into his innocent baby blues, and she follows him to Italy, where he's continuing a lifelong competition with boyhood rival Enzo (Jean Reno in a performance both comic and touching).

Besson's first English-language production looks more European than Hollywood, and it suffers from a tin ear for the language. At times it feels more like an IMAX undersea documentary than a drama about free divers, but the lush and lovely images create a fairy tale dimension to Jacques's story, a veritable Little Merman. More dolphin than man, he's so torn between earthly love and aquatic paradise that even his dreams call him to the sea (in a sequence more eloquent than any speech).

Besson has expanded the film by 50 minutes for his director's cut, which adds little story but slows the contemplative pace until it practically floats in time, and has restored Eric Serra's synthesizer-heavy score, a slice of 1980s pop that at times borders on disco kitsch. Most importantly, he has restored his original ending, which echoes the fairy tale he tells Joanna earlier in the film and leaves the story floating in the inky blackness of ambiguity. --Sean Axmaker

Amazon.com essential video

Blue bounds into her first feature-length film ready to sing. She gets sidetracked along the way, of course, but that's part of the brilliant Blue's Clues formula. Each half-hour TV show presents engaging, easy-to-grasp mini-mysteries that are within toddlers' reach. This time Blue; her huge-eyed, slightly loopy human companion, Steve; and their cadre of talking-object friends are scurrying around, preparing for a backyard music show that day. Everybody picks a number to perform; Blue's is a duet with Tickety Tock, but the clock contracts laryngitis. Who will be Blue's new partner? A game of Blue's Clues reveals the hardly reluctant replacement. The standard discovery of three clues followed by the usual wind-down song would add up to a colossal disappointment in a feature film, so substantial rounding-out is provided. Steve stumbles onto a keyboard inhabited by a note called G-Clef (the unmistakable voice of Ray Charles), who gives a tour of how to make a song. First you pick the notes, then you work on rhythm, then comes tempo, and, last but not least, "you've got to give it soul." This movie's themes include perseverance (Tickety Tock can't sing but finds a way to contribute anyway) and self-empowerment. Blue's Big Musical Movie is a feast for little eyes and ears; the sets are so colorful they hurt grown-up eyes, and the songs--especially the one that gets the Charles treatment--are all sing-along-with-me winners. --Tammy La Gorce

Fantastic! My 14 month old and my 4 year old love it- it's educational, musical, and more than an hour long! Perfect for getting ready for work in the morning.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best kid's movies.......2007-01-06

I had previously bought this movie on VHS, my oldest son wore it out because he watched it so much. I bought another VHS and within a few years and another child later, I finally bought the DVD. They know the songs by heart (and so do I by now) and it keeps them entertained for a while. It's a really cute movie with lots of songs and you still get to look for Blue's Clues.

5 out of 5 stars Jackson Loves Blues Big Musical!!!!.......2007-01-02

My 2 yr old son Jackson loves all things Blue & music. He has 4 Blue's Clues DVD's and LOVES this one because of all the music. I gave it to him for Christmas and we have watched it serveral times already. He dances around and plays his drum with the characters and music. I will be adding more to his collection soon. And for all the parents that want their children to watch something wholesome and educational pick up any of Blue's DVD's you wont be sorry.

I wish I had not gotten the directors cut, it was way too long. The diving was amazing.

What can I say, the scenery and the music just makes this movie wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Big Blue.......2007-03-22

One of those films which takes you away from your humdrum life and makes you feel that you are actually in the film.
The acting and photography are fantastic, it is a very long film but well worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Movie.......2007-03-13

I have seen the other version of the big blue and there was alot of empty spaces in it key parts of the movie that made it hard to understand. But the directors cut filled in those empty spaces and made those scenes they left out more understandable. The directors cut is a much better version of the movie and if you have never seen this movie before I recommend you see this version first. The music was much better in the first version I do have to say that. It was more mysterious and comforting in the other version this one was to upbeat it was more like disco to me. I loved the characters Jean Reno is one of my favorite actors. Im not sure why Jean Marc Barr's career didnt take off I thought he was wonderful in this movie.Rosanna Arquette well she was ok but I think they could have casted her part a lot better with someone else. All she did in this movie was giggle and scream to the top of her lungs. She was like listening to fingers nails going down a chalk board. My appologies to all the Rosanna Arquette fans I didnt mean to offend. It was a great movie and throughly enjoyed it and would highly recommend it to anyone. I would give it a 5 plus.

5 out of 5 stars The movie of a generation...a trip to heaven.......2007-02-05

In Europe we consider this movie " the movie of a generation"...when it came out, it stayed in theater something like 4 or 5 month !! And it came out a second time with a longer version. In both versions we always had the same ending...so I'm pretty much disappointed (but not surprised) to read that in US you had a kind of "happy ending".
Anyway, the music scored by Eric Serra, the man who did the soundtrack from every Besson movies by the way, is magnificent. This movie ranks in my top five, the best french movie in my opinion. To see this movie in a theater is one of the most beautiful experience...!
If you like Luc Besson, there's actually two movies you MUST get : "SUBWAY" and "NIKITA" (not the one with Bridget Fonda...but with Anne Parrillaud).

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but Not Appropriate.......2007-05-13

The DVD is interesting for a short period of time. The story progresses too slowly. My daughter (age 3) became bored. The focus isn't on the potty enough.

2 out of 5 stars Backfired in our case.......2007-04-01

Our 2 1/2 year son recently took interest in the video *after* being potty trained. Within a few days he started having accidents, which he really didn't have before, even when first learning to use the potty. I finally asked him why he was going in his pants and he said it was because "Ojo didn't make it to the bathroom".

There is a scene in this video where Ojo the Bear doesn't make it to the bathroom in time and has an accident. For some reason, our son thought this gave him permission to have accidents, probably because Bear says accidents are ok. While this is true, our son took this statement to heart and now I have to work with him all over again. The video is fine except for this scene, as it can easily be misinterpreted by little ones. Bear is very reassuring about accidents, but probably too much so.

5 out of 5 stars Bear is a hit with my toddler!.......2007-03-29

My toddler wasn't familiar with Bear in the Big Blue House but became a fan after this dvd! She really likes the potty episode and the other 2 episodes that are included on the dvd. She asks for more bear after watching it every time! The potty training episode is light hearted and yet covers the gamut of emotional concerns a toddler may have about transitioning from diapers to using the potty. She isn't potty trained as a result of course, but I think the dvd is a great tool for encouragement for sure. She's 22 months and still may have a ways to go before ditching the diapers. This dvd is tasteful, cute, and really a pleasure for me to see and not get tired of too! We really like the other 2 episodes included on the dvd too, sometimes she watches all 3 in one day!

3 out of 5 stars Not a great potty training aid.......2007-01-31

I was disappointed with this collection simply because it wasn't what I expected. The first show featured on this DVD mostly focuses on potty issues like going potty even if you're in the middle of a fun game, accidents sometimes happen even if you're trying to get to the potty really fast or when you're sleeping, etc. This is all great, but the next two episodes don't relate to the potty at all - at least not if you're a two-year-old! With a name like "Potty Time," I was expecting something a little more focused.

I do think this show is very cute. My son likes "Bear and the Big Blue House" in general, but this was not very motivating with potty issues. If you're looking for a real potty-training aid, I highly recommend "Potty Power."

5 out of 5 stars Potty Training Playtime.......2006-11-10

As with all the Bear in the Big Blue House videos this DVD was done with fun music, great characters, and a lot of tact. If you are in the trenches of potty training or just starting this is a really fun and relatable DVD for the our little friends. We loved that fact that they even addressed pooping on the potty. This is often an issue not dealt with on other videos and often the hardest task to master. Other issues that Bear deals with are staying clean and dry, accidents while your trying to get there and you have to stop playing and go. The song "You're a Toileteer" has been sung over and over by the whole family. Of course we will love not talking about the toilet, someday. But since that doesn't seem to be anytime soon...We love our Bear!

The mighty-muscled heroes and big-bottomed babes of fantasy artist Frank Frazetta inspired animator Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat, Wizards) to create the swords-and-sorcery epic Fire and Ice. Bakshi uses a technique called rotoscoping, which uses live-action film of actors as the template for animation, allowing him to put realistic action into fantastic environments. The verisimilitude of movement in a cartoon can be startling, but that's about all Fire and Ice has to offer; the wafer-thin story, overwrought characters, and clumsy dialogue are vapid cliches. Of much greater interest are the extras in this two-disc set, including a making-of feature that demonstrates the painstaking process of rotoscoping; enthusiastic commentary from Bakshi, who's a jovial, down-to-earth guy with a thick Brooklyn accent; deliriously fatuous diary notes from one of the actors; and a feature-length documentary called Frazetta: Painting with Fire, which reveals the artist to be more intriguing than any of the barbarians he's famous for. The effusive praise of other fantasy artists and "Frazetta historians" occasionally veers into Spinal Tap territory, but it's fascinating watching Frazetta turn from a 1950s James-Dean-style tough guy into the king of fantasy art. Though his work is often dismissed as adolescent kitsch, the documentary persuasively argues that Frazetta deservedly dominates his corner of the art world. --Bret Fetzer

From The Director Of The Original Animated LORD OF THE RINGS And The Illustrator Of CONAN THE BARBARIAN

It began as a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between two of the greatest icons of the fantasy genre: Controversial animator Ralph Bakshi (director of FRITZ THE CAT, WIZARDS and the original THE LORD OF THE RINGS) and legendary illustrator Frank Frazetta (creator of the iconic CONAN THE BARBARIAN, VAMPIRELLA and Edgar Rice Burroughs book covers). It became - and remains - one of the most startling animation epics of all time. Now experience a world unlike any ever seen, where savage warriors, horrific monsters and luscious maidens battle for the soul of a civilization in a time of good and evil, pleasure and pain, and FIRE & ICE

This long-unavailable cult favorite has been remastered in High Definition from the original vault materials, remixed in stunning 6.1 DTS-ES and 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround EX, and loaded with exciting Extras.

Disc 2 contains FRAZETTA: PAINTING WITH FIRE, the acclaimed 93 minute documentary that explores the remarkable life and career of the man who changed fantasy art forever.

1 out of 5 stars Teenage nostalgia does not age well........2007-06-26

Fire and Ice (Ralph Bakshi, 1983)

Sometimes I wonder what on earth filmmakers were thinking when they made movies. More often, I wonder what I was thinking when I was enthralled with them. In this case, though, I don't need to do either--when Fire and Ice came out, I was fourteen years old, male, and not terribly experienced with the opposite sex--in other words, I was Ralph Bakshi's exact target audience. Now I'm thirty-eight, married, and have a more encyclopedic knowledge of eighties and nineties exploitation cinema (read: porn) than I'm sure anyone in my family would like to acknowledge; rewatching Fire and Ice these days, I look back and grieve that my fourteen-year-old self had such bad taste. (But then, in 1983, my all-time favorite movie was Deathsport. No, I can't explain it either.)

Fire and Ice, which All-Movie Guide calls "Bakshi's last stab at epic fantasy", concerns two kingdoms, the established human kingdom ruled by fire, and the upstart kingdom of outcasts and half-breeds, the kingdom of Ice. Needless to say, one is wise and good, and the other is twisted and evil. Interestingly, there are a few places in the script where denizens of either kingdom could waver from their one-dimensionality and suddenly bring depth and richness to the script; we're dangling there waiting for Bakshi to drop the apple into our mouths, but of course it's snatched away as quickly as it's offered. Cruel, I tell you. But then, no one's supposed to be paying attention to the script; we're supposed to be too busy, erm, "watching" Tigre (voice of Cynthia Leake), who starts the movie wearing something that looks as if it's supposed to be a diaphanous lavender negligee over a couple of pieces of filmy stuff that pass as underwear. But only for the first third of the movie, after which the negligee-thing goes away. Draw some luscious, and entirely unrealistic, curves, and the audience's collective brain will be interested in nothing else; at least, this seems to have been the thinking behind this production. (Add in a cameo from Batman--and I swear, the character looks like the ancestor of the animated version of Batman from the seventies--and you'll kill off the last few collective brain cells still struggling to recover from the onslaught of Tigre-flesh.)

But the worst part is that, after realizing all this, I still sat through the entire eighty-one minutes this weekend. I'm pretty sure I didn't drool, but there may be some extra gaps in the gray matter I should probably have my doctor take a look at. *

2 out of 5 stars Slow moving rotoscoped animation.......2007-05-26

The storyline for this movie was interesting, but took so long to get moving I started to lose interest. If it was a one-hour movie, it probably would have been more entertaining. The Big Bad Evil Ice Guy is attempting to conquer the Good Guy Fire King, but most of the time is spent with the Fire King's scantily clad, fantasy-proportioned princess running from ape-like soldiers and being rescued over-and-over by a sole-surviving warrior from one of her father/king's tribes. It all wraps up very quickly in the end. If you like Frazzetta, then you'll notice this is a whole movie of his paintings in rotoscoped animation.

4 out of 5 stars Action Packed Fantasy Fun!.......2007-01-03

If you liked Conan the Barbarian or even Thundarr the Barbarian you'll like this movie.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorites. A real gem of a film........2006-12-01

I highly recommend this title to anyone who likes films in the fantasy genre. Even after all these years I still enjoy watching this film for what could probably be the 100th time. The animation techniques were very innovative for the time. The storyline is compelling and the characters are fascinating. This is one DVD that I am very happy to have been able to get my hands on and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for something unique and special.

5 out of 5 stars Frazetta animated, 'nuff said!.......2006-11-22

He is awesome. Anyone who dobuts the Rotoscope, see this movie.

Know what's cooler? If you are an illustrator/animator, you could do that movie today? (Hopefully something original along those lines)

Just get Poser 5 or higher, a good animation software package (ToonBoom seems to be leading) and work out a storyboard. Then, have the 3D figs act out the basic moves and trace over them, using the computer to extend your art style.

A literal "Animated Movie" would still be a labor of Hercules, but 3-10 minute shorts would be quite doable;-)

Bear does it again teaching children the shapes, sounds, & colors while entertaining at the same time. This is a good way to keep you child busy while they learn. 5 out of 5 stars Excellent Learning Tool.......2006-08-21

I bought this for my son because he just loves Bear in the Big Blue House. Since he is so fascinated with Bear, I bought this video to help him learn his shapes and colors. He is only 1 1/2 but learns quick. Great DVD to help children learn.

5 out of 5 stars Henson's Done It Again!.......2006-07-06

My son, Daniel, saw Bear for the first time when he was 13 months and we took a trip to Disney World (Playhouse Disney at Disney / MGM). Instantly, he was in love. We started recording Bear in the Big Blue House on our TiVo as soon as we got home and, once we realized he really loved the show, bought a couple of DVDs (since we were getting tired of watching the same 4 episodes over and over again). This is a GREAT series that, while explaining things to kids isn't talking down to them so parents aren't sickened by the sweetness quality. My husband and I enjoy watching these almost as much as Daniel.

Thank you Henson Productions for bringing yet another family-friendly series into our lives!

This show makes my one year old laugh and dance! The songs are cute and there is a lot to learn!

Rhythm and ritual reign in this jazzy duo of Blue's Clues episodes. When Blue and Joe decide to form a band in "Blue's Big Band," Tickety taps the triangle, Magenta shakes the tambourine, Sidetable raps, and Joe claps along with preschool viewers as they copy rhythms and practice careful listening to unearth the story behind the music. What instrument will Blue play? "Bedtime Business" details the bedtime routine at Blue's house, including Blue's favorite part of getting ready for bed. Viewers help identify body parts during Blue's bath and sort by pattern and color to help Blue's friends find their pajamas. Jam with Blue's big band, dance the "Toothbrush Tango," or just sit back and enjoy these two fun-filled musical stories. (Ages 2 to 6) --Tami Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Bear is awesome...and he's in SPANISH, too!.......2006-08-03

Bear is so much more enjoyable than some of the other kiddie fare out there. We love the songs, his gentle, caring nature and his silly sniffing! You can not go wrong with bear. This one is great for the little ones that like to "get down"! As a bonus, this one (and quite a few of the others) has a spanish soundtrack for those wishing to raise their children bilingually. I love it! (The only problem there is that while Bear may say "manzanas" the word "apples" shows up on the screen.) Bear is simply the best. We are cuckoo for Bear in this house. :)

5 out of 5 stars What a party!.......2006-03-17

the songs are lively and catchy. My 2 year old daughter loves to sing and dance to the Grandma Mambo with Grandma Flutter Tutter and play her maracas along with Ojo's orchestra.

This is our favorite Bear DVD!

Evening and morning routines take center stage in this two-episode tape. In "Go to Sleep," Bear's small bear friend Ojo is spending the night but fights sleep even though she is tired. Meanwhile, a friendly game of "Go Fish" in the kitchen keeps waking Tutter the Mouse, whose hole is only feet away. The whole gang wakes up from a slumber party at the house in "Morning Glory." Bear teaches them the importance of a good breakfast, brushing teeth, and allowing slow wakers like Ojo a chance to get their bearings, so to speak. The seven-foot adult stand-in also puts the kids to work while serenading them with a round of "Clean Up the House" before they head out for the day. If only it were that easy with little humans. Toddlers through kindergartners will enjoy this 48-minute video from the popular PBS series. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Witty and friendly and funny.......2007-04-28

Criteria for a children's video:

1. Do kids like it? Yes, my toddler loves this, sings along, and asks me to sing along, too.

2. Can the parents watch it without going bonkers? Yep, so far, so good, every time I see it again I notice new things. The puppets are sophisticated and the characters distinct. The music is fabulous, mostly inspired by modern American folk--how great to hear simple fiddle music and guitar instead of overproduced "showtunes." The simple music also means that if I sing the songs afterward, it sounds close to what my child remembers from the show.

3. Since kids will copy anything they see on TV or in a book, what is going on in this video? Gentle humor, good manners, good music. All things I'm glad to see her emulate.

That's the bare bones (ha!) of liking this series. But it goes beyond the basic. __Bear__ has subtle messages about food, getting along, and social differences. For instance, in one episode, Tutter the mouse is eating a sandwich, which he must learn to share. OK, we could see that coming. BUT! Without making a big deal over, it, the producers made the sandwich on whole wheat bread, quietly supporting good nutrition.

Another example or two; when Ojo the bear cub sleeps over, Bear makes her bed, very cozy, on the couch. When they have a birthday party (in a different episode), it's home made decorations and one meaningful present. A quiet message that you don't have to have a great deal of money to have a good time.

And there are significant female characters (Ojo, Shadow, Luna) who aren't made into gooey subservients as in so many kids videos (or feature films, for that matter).

Bear is the leader of the series, but often sings harmony to some other character, giving a simple message that you don't always have to be number one.

Hooray for Bear!

4 out of 5 stars Bear Rocks.......2007-03-07

As always bear keeps kids busy and teaches them at the same time. This one is excellent to help get them ready for bed too. Bear is great, he teaches about import things such as brushing teach, combing hair, potty training, the seasons, colors, to share, doctor office visiting, among many other things. The best pre-school has to offer.

4 out of 5 stars The Early Bear Gets the... Worm?.......2005-10-02

"Early to Bed, Early to Rise" is another in a series of "Bear in the Big Blue House" video releases ported to DVD. This DVD includes two episodes from the video release --- "Go to Sleep" and "Morning Glory" and adds in "A Winter's Nap."

"Go to Sleep"

Ojo stays over for the night at the Big Blue House. Bear helps her to get to sleep and then decides to turn in himself, when the doorbell rings. It turns out that his friends Jeremiah and Doc Hog have shown up for a card game, which Bear completely forgot about. Now Bear has to take care of them, while also seeing that Ojo isn't disturbed, as well as Tutter, who's sleeping in his mousehole. Featuring a great song from Shadow, "Rockabye," about how shadows watch over you at night.

"Morning Glory"

Bear helps everybody in the Big Blue House to get up in the morning after a sleepover, but some have more trouble rising than others. Once everybody is up, though, they're ready and raring for morning activities --- but not before enjoying a nice breakfast. Treelo just wants to play, play, play, but Bear and everyone else manage to convince him that it would be better to have some breakfast first. Featuring an old-favorite "Bear in the Big Blue House" song --- "Brush Brush Bree."

"A Winter's Nap"

Winter has come to Woodland Valley and Bear would like nothing more than a nice nap. However, he never quite seems to make it to the nap, as he has to help out his friends in the Big Blue House. Sleep evades Bear, but his friends have a nice surprise for him.

Like all of the other "Bear in the Big Blue House" DVDs, there aren't really any good special features on this. You only get the option to jump to songs from the episodes and previews for other Disney TV Shows and movies.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD for toddlers!.......2005-09-07

This is another excellent DVD in the "Bear in the Big Blue House" series. It has episodes concerning: going to sleep, "Go to Sleep"; starting a brand new day, "Morning Glory"; and napping, "A Winter's Nap".

"Go to Sleep" covers ways to lull yourself off to dreamland, even though you may not think you're tired, and the importance of a good night's sleep for a good day tomorrow.

"Morning Glory introduces Ray, the sun, who sings a good morning song with Bear. The episode incorporates the importance of breakfast, brushing your teeth, how different people take different amounts of time to wake up, getting morning chores done and how having a good morning can influence the rest of your day.

The message on the "A Winter's Nap" episode is a little strange, however. The episode is supposed to be about Bear and Tutter, the mouse, trying to take naps during the day, but neither one can seem to manage it due to various things going on in the house. In the end they both throw in the towel and join in the fun in a "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" mentality. While the rest of the episode talks about naps and how to get cozy and fall asleep, how good they are for you, etc., I really didn't understand the "Oh, well, can't nap? No big deal" message that came out near the end. Other than that though, it was a cute episode.

The character Shadow, whose segments I usually find a little creepy, is more down to earth in these and there are less of the cut-out shadow people scenes and more of Shadow just singing songs.

5 out of 5 stars One that YOU can watch over and over again!.......2005-08-24

OK, call me selfish, but when looking for a DVD for my son to watch, I am hoping to find something that I can watch over and over again without going crazy. This is it. I love the bear, the big blue house, and all of his friends (coincidentally, so does my son). This one has great messages for kids about bedtime even when you don't want to sleep, the importance of breakfast, cleaning the house, and naptime!

4 out of 5 stars Bear Rocks.......2007-03-07

Bear does it again teaching children while entertaining at the same time. This is a good way to keep you child busy while they learn. Bear teaches values and helpful information such as seasons, shapes, colors, potty training, brushing teeth, bathing, sharing, friendship, and alot more.

5 out of 5 stars Bear Entertains and Teaches Cognitive and Social Skills.......2006-08-17

I've heard Bear compared to "Big Bird in a bear suit", but I find this an inaccurate description. Big Bird has a childlike quality to him, while Bear is more like a big brother or a teacher. As he gently guides his Woodland Valley friends to discover the joy of reading or the value of carefully chosing your words, he likewise teaches children important cognitive and social skills.

Bear directly address the audience as he goes through his day in the Big Blue House. My 4 month old giggles with delight as he "talks to her", explaining the lessons of the day. His voice is calming and friendly, and his language doesn't "talk down to children."

On this DVD alone, I have seen lessons on sharing, expressing your feelings, chosing words that do not hurt other's feelings, reading, vocabulary, story structure, different types of stories and ways to tell stories, types of books, use of imagination, and even confidence and how to overcome shyness. These lessons are woven through three eposides through the interaction of the supporting characters and clever and entertaining songs.

The songs on this DVD get stuck in your mind. Although the opening sequence is your typical "welcome kids" song, the ending sequence is a hummable, touching song between Bear and his friend, the moon Luna ("The Goodbye Song"). Other songs include the jazzy blues driven "Say The Words", a reoccuring song between Bear and Ray the Sun "Good Morning", a song that teaches story structure "Once Upon A Time", and a duet that supports imagination and the joys of reading "I Was Just Reading A Book."

The supporting cast play an important role, the "students" to Bear's wise advice. While they learn, so does the veiwer. All the characters are amusing individuals - the hyperactive Treelo, the playloving mouse Tutter, the calmer young bear (and roommate?) Ojo, and the twins Pip and Pop. Shadow, a storytelling shadow, the sun and the moon are major helpers in assisting Bear. Bear wraps up his day, and in turn reinforces and summarizes the important lessons of the episode, with his nightly conversation with Luna.

As a parent who gets trapped watching each episode several times daily, it's also worth noting that the episodes are very entertaining. Irony, puns, and jokes that may go over a little one's head are sprinkled in each episode. For example, the "oldest creature in Woodland Valley", an absent-minded turtle is the "only postmaster" in the valley, while a hard-of-hearing bird is the valley's telephone operator. One book on Bear's table is entitled "Jane Bear" and a newspaper article declared that a snake wrestling tournament ended in a tie. These little touches make the video fun even for the adults who are forced to watch it over and over again at the urging of their little ones.

Most importantly, however, is that my child, a mere 4 month old, loves the entire Bear DVD collection. She is mesmerized by it. If she's going to be entralled by anything, I'd rather it be something that teaches valuable lessons. The fact that I enjoy the DVD is just an added benefit.

5 out of 5 stars words words words.......2005-10-02

My 3 yr old son has quite a few "Bear" dvds and loves them all. I was unsure of this one because he doesn't sit for long stories but it's not like that at all. He asks to see "words please."

4 out of 5 stars Bear in the Big Blue House on DVD.......2005-09-23

Recently, many of the old "Bear in the Big Blue House" video releases have been coming to DVD --- and I think that smells good!

There are three complete episodes of "Bear in the Big Blue House" on this DVD:

"What's the Story?"

A neat episode which Bear and his Big Blue House play host to the annual Woodland Valley Storytelling Competition. This episode contains a lot of interesting ideas about storytelling and has a lot to teach. This one has some fun humor in it too, involving some of the plots of the stories and in-jokes related to the characters.

"Words, Words, Words"

In this episode, Bear thinks about how important words are, and how sometimes, you just can't seem to find the right word for something. He also helps his friends in the Big Blue House to find their words to express their feelings. Harry the Duck (Harry: "Thank you, Mr. Bear." Bear: "You're welcome. And, oh, Harry, it's just Bear.") pays a visit in this episode.

"Read My Book"

Bear orders a new book for his Book of the Month club and ends up receiving a book about how to make slop! It turns out that he got Doc Hog's book, but now it's looking like he might not get the right book in time for the club. Our friends in the Big Blue House all suggest to Bear their favorite books for him to read at the club!

As far as special features go, the "Bear in the Big Blue House" DVDs are generally lacking, so it's a good thing that this is such a good show. The DVD has continuous play-through, "fast-play," which means that it can be used without having to access the menu. This is a standard feature found on most Disney DVDs and other children's releases these days. Naturally, there are promos/previews for other DVDs and movies. These are nice, but tend not to vary too much from DVD-to-DVD released around the same time period. Fortunately, these can be easily skipped and viewed later at your leisure, or not at all, if you don't want to. Other than that, the only other "special feature" is access to sing-along versions of all of the songs, which really isn't too bad.

Overall, I'd say this DVD is definitely worth it, simply due to the great quality of the show, even if there isn't much to speak of in terms of special features.

4 out of 5 stars wonder of kids thoughts on blue.......2001-01-07

I do some chld care and in this I find out a lot about kids and what they think. One of the things I have found out is that kids, or some kids at least love the Muppets, Seasame Street and the caracters of it, Blue's Clues and Bear In The Big Blue House. They like things that help them learn especialy if it is some thing fun that helps them learn. New born to four years is the age range of the kids I get to play with. The younger they are the more simple things they like. Infants to young toddlers tend to love Elmo and Teletubies. Todlers up to four love the others that I mentioned earlier. My niece loves Bear and watches him one to three times a day and usualy only him or one of the other videos she has wich are previously mentiond. I hope that with this info parents and others with relationships with kids will help them learn and have fun with learning using these videos or lesons from a video like them.
