This is one of those rare political films that transcend politics with a stirring emotional story. Argentinean first-time director Luis Puenzo tells the story of a strong-willed teacher who tries to learn the true identity of her adopted daughter's father, coming to suspect that he was a political prisoner. Her political awakening is actually an emotional one as well because of her detached persona. Ironically, even though she is a teacher, she doesn't connect with people very well, thinking of history in the most abstract terms. But she learns the painful truth of present-day life. Tautly directed by Puenzo, The Official Story was a 1985 Oscar-winner for Best Foreign Film, with a riveting performance by Norma Aleandro. --Bill Desowitz

One Night Only (DTS)
Taped as a lavish cable television special in 1997, One Night Only trades on the Bee Gees' shape-shifting career as pop survivors. Over the course of 111 minutes, this straightforward concert, produced at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and groomed for both video and CD posterity, sprints through 31 songs from their past three decades. Even after the inevitable disco jokes are expended, and the jaundiced viewer contemplates the role hats, hairspray, and comb-overs now play in dressing the once stylishly long-haired troika, the Gibb brothers' signature vocal harmonies and hook-laden song craft beg respect. Casual listeners can't be blamed for equating the Bee Gees with the dance floor bonanza they reaped through 1978's Saturday Night Fever, yet that commercial zenith was actually the culmination of a comeback for a group that had seemed washed up by the early '70s. One Night Only thankfully takes an even-handed view of both their original late '60s hits ("Massachusetts," "To Love Somebody," "Lonely Days"), building from a cannily Beatle-browed vocal sound, and the '70s blue-eyed soul ("Jive Talkin'," "Nights on Broadway") that led them naturally into disco. The Fever hits are here, as are Gibb originals that clicked for other acts; the family circle also widens for a posthumous duet with their late brother, Andy Gibb, while Celine Dion gets star billing in the collaborative "Immortality." --Sam Sutherland
This Is Where I Came In: The Official Story of the Bee Gees
There have been a lot of durable family groups in popular music over the years, but it would be hard to name one that has lasted longer, and succeeded as consistently, as the Bee Gees. Barry Gibb and his younger twin brothers, Robin and Maurice, were making TV and radio appearances in Australia as early as 1960 before returning to their native England and joining the Beatles-led British Invasion, and they're still at it more than 40 years later. All of that is duly chronicled in this two-hour documentary (produced in 2000), along with a great deal more: the personal problems that led to a breakup in the early '70s; the unparalleled success of the Saturday Night Fever era; their occasional missteps and failures (e.g., the abominable Sgt. Pepper movie); the rise and tragic fall of brother Andy; the respect their success finally earned them in the '90s; and so on. The format is pretty standard; interviews, photos, home movies, and concert footage all contribute to a straight, chronological telling of the Bee Gees' tale. But no stone is left unturned, and the Gibb Brothers (not to mention everyone else who's interviewed) have plenty to say. Best of all, there's lots of the Bee Gees' music, including a video of the title track of the 2001 album This Is Where I Came In, after which the film is named. In the end, we're left with the impression the Bee Gees would probably want us to have: that these guys have written, recorded, produced, and performed literally hundreds of great songs. --Sam Graham
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Loved it.......2007-06-27
For fans of any era of the Bee Gees, this is an awesome selection to purchase. The live concert was great, it even contained a few songs not usually found on other albums, such as them singing Grease instead of that other guy on the soundtrack. Also includes Run To Me and Heartbreaker, both of which I don't have yet on CD, but will soon.
The biography story was especially great, maybe a bit long for some, (two hours I think), but really great for the devoted fan. This was recorded before Maurice died, so it's also interesting to hear them speak of each other and their love even before the tragedy. Also included on the DVD is their new video, This Is Where I Came In.
I shared the set with my mom who was a bit skeptical at first and doesn't often find time to watch such things, but she really loved it too, every minute of it she said. She's gonna buy her own copy asap, you should too.
The Official Story - Extraordinary experience.......2007-04-10
The previous reviews we read before getting this production fell short to what we got...not only a flashback to our 'Saturday Night Fever' times but also the lasting impression of knowing the real insights of their career, the toll in their family and the perseverance that still lasts. The B.G's have confirmed once more they are the greatest group ever (even beyond the Beatles). They cannot only sing but turn into lyrics the best of our human nature. Absolutely EXTRAORDINARY!
Bee Gees fan should buy........2007-01-16
This is a great combination of two dvd's with one chronicling the group's history and background and the other is one of their final live performances. One Night Only has many touching moments that span from their early music, their family, and their many movie soundtracks. A display of different generations who enjoy their music.
EXTRAORDINARY!.......2007-01-03
NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I HAVE WATCHED THIS DVD, I TRULY APPRECIATE THE QUALITY OF THE DVD PRODUCTION FORMAT AND THE PHENOMENALLY TALENTED BEEGEES
Great Music - Great Story.......2006-07-12
With this DVD/CD set you get a great concert by one of the greatest song writing and performing groups ever. Having enjoyed the music of the Bee Gees for almost 40 years, and never seeing them in concert, it was a real treat.
While I have enjoyed their music I was never aware of their story. Learning about the many profesional and personal ups and downs and the impact these events had on their music and lives, and in many cases resulting in some of their best songs, gave me a greater appreciation for their music.

Description
An Argentine teacher lives in blissful ignorance of the evils perpetrated by her country's government. Over time, however, her students' rejection of the "official" versions of their history leads her to question things herself. Suspecting that her adopted daughter may have been the child of a murdered political prisoner, she attempts to unearth the truth. But her investigation reveals levels of political corruption so abhorrent that the illusions of her past life are irrevocably shattered.

The Offical Story.......2007-06-27
A must see - an outstanding portrayal of the 1970's in Argentina told through the lives of one typical family.
The Official Story.......2007-05-21
Being Argentine, I particularly loved watching the film (this is a FILM, not a movie!) in my native language. Not only Spanish, but Argentine Spanish. The cinematography brought me back to the days when I lived in Buenos Aires, the language was music to my ears, and the story was made truly powerful by the tremendous acting prowess of all involved. This is True and Factual history on screen. Highly recomend it to one and all.
please cry for me, argentina.......2006-10-06
a bit of liberal glorified soap opera, illogical to the nth degree, relating how a barren (physically and emotionally) woman adopts the baby of a murdered political prisoner and her coming to terms with same. well acted but the premise (probably founded in some truth) is incredible.
"By preaching destabilization, they encourage subversive ideas.".......2006-05-18
The film "The Official Story" wraps the politics of government-supported torture and the slaughter of thousands of Argentinians around the awakening of the social conscience of one woman. Alicia (Norma Aleandro) is a married, affluent history teacher who works in a boys' school in Buenos Aires. She and her prominent husband, Roberto (Hector Alterio) have an adopted child, Gaby. When Alicia attends a reunion of school friends, she's delighted to see Ana (Chunchuna Villafane)--a woman who abruptly left the country seven years earlier. The atmosphere at the reunion becomes a bit tense when one woman breezily mentions that someone they all knew only has one child left. When asked what happened to the other children, the woman says--"they were all subversives." While everyone else seems to find this a perfectly reasonable explanation, Alicia is troubled, but there's more troubling information in store.
Ana reveals to Alicia that she left Argentina after being horribly tortured by military government officials who were trying to extract information about a man she once knew. Ana was lucky to survive, but she tells Alicia that there were many who didn't--including women who gave birth inside jail and had their babies stolen from them and given to the families of the privileged elite. While Alicia--who's only been vaguely aware of past social unrest--would like to reject the horrific information of her friend's treatment, prompted by her conscience she begins to question if her adopted daughter is a child of "the Disappeared Ones" ("Los Desaparecidos").
Alicia's brutish husband (who's outraged Ana is back in Argentina) and frivolous friends believe that torture and disappearances only happen to those who "deserve" it in some fashion. It takes exposure to the brutalities conducted by the state to shake Alicia out of her nice, sanitized, perfect world. As a teacher of history, she believes "by understanding history, we understand the world," but she fails to realize that history is all too often an "official" version. She's never questioned authority or the "official" versions of the past, and at the beginning of the film, she's flabbergasted when a student argues that, "history is written by assassins." Slowly, she begins to connect with those around her--including a fellow teacher who explains that Alicia didn't want to believe the horrific truth because to believe murders and tortures were really happening would be to acknowledge "complicity."
"The Official Story" is a perfect film on every level. It's incredible to realize that so many people just 'disappeared' in Argentina between 1976-1983, and the film brings home the pain and the horror while making this a very human, moving story. Directed by Luis Puenzo, "The Official Story" is in Spanish with English subtitles--displacedhuman
The human face of political cinema.......2006-03-22
The Official Story is an excellent example of how to mix political cinema with human drama, avoiding agitprop or crude sloganeering to put a human face on the issue of Argentina's disappeared - in particular the children taken away from undesirables and given to well-connected families who won't ask any questions. When one well-heeled adopted mother learns of this and begins to suspect that her adopted daughter may be one of those children, rather than turn into a sermon the film focuses on her own fears as she tries to disprove the possibility until ultimately she is in the same uncertain hell as the families of the disappeared - she can suspect, but she can never truly know.
Although some of the devices may seem a little too schematic - she's a history teacher who depends solely on the `verifiable' official version of her country's history - it wears them lightly and is often extremely powerful. The Best Foreign Film Oscar has a rather dubious history, but this is definitely one of the more deserving winners.

I can watch this video over and over! Fantastic! I'm going to recommend it to all my friends and I know for sure that they will be mesmerized! Thank you!
Entertaining.......2007-03-31
I have loved the BEEGEES music since they first became famous. This Offical story was truly enjoyable. It was very well done and extensively factual. It was what I was hoping it would be and more. I couldn't stop watching - - my eyes were glued to the TV. All true BEEGEES fans will love every minute.
If you love the Bee Gees, you need this DVD.......2006-06-11
A better job of this documentary could not have been done. It's a two hour presentation that will leave you feeling that the incredible success Barry, Robin and Maurice have had is very well deserved. The brothers Gibb were blessed with an incredible ability to write and produce massively popular hits - they are the second most successful group in the history of popular music after the Beatles (in terms of record sales). Of course, in terms of longevity, they are rivalled only by the Rolling Stones.
Told in their own words (also with narration), the story covers their entire lives: their relationships with each other, their wives, their families, their triumphs and trageries and, of course, their unbelievable success. The documentary is littered with numerous achievements.
If you are greatly interested in the Bee Gees (or even if you have a passing interest) you really owe it to yourself to get this DVD or video. Although it was produced in 2001 prior to Maurice's untimely death, it's still absolutely fascinating viewing. Five stars is really not enough.
"GREAT DVD".......2006-02-24
The Bee Gees are one of my very favorite music groups of all time. This DVD is chock full of trivia. I didn't know that the group formed way back in the 1960s. They're great songwriters, their music jams, and the late Maurice Gibb, who happened to be my favorite Bee Gee, made me smile and shed a tear. I'm still sad that he's no longer with us. This is a great DVD.
Excellent Bee Gee's DVD.......2005-09-16
This DVD was so good, it takes you back to when they first began, you see things told from there Mom, When I put it in I couldn't stop watching. This was made before the death of Maurice but it brings you pretty much up to date before his death. This is one that you will love to have in your collection, if you are a Bee Gee's fan.

One of the hugest soul-funk groups of the last half of the 1970s, Earth Wind & Fire created a lush, trademark sound that reveals its infectious nature in this documentary look at the group's 30-year history. Founded by Maurice White in the early 1970s, EWF broke out in mid-decade with its That's the Way of the World album. The documentary offers footage and reminiscences from the band, about its origins (White had been a Chicago session musician), its breakthrough and subsequent run as America's biggest soul band--and White's eventual burnout that led to putting the band on hiatus through much of the 1980s. It all has the homogenized sound of an authorized biography (no Behind the Music revelations here), but it gains energy every time a vintage musical performance takes center stage. --Marshall Fine
Customer Reviews:
The Best You Will Find on EW&F.......2007-05-14
Maurice White's genius comes through on this DVD. The most comprehensive look at the beginnings of Whites dream - which of course turned into the incomparable Earth Wind & Fire. From his beginnings with the Ramsey Lewis trio through forming what is probably the greatest R&B group of all time bar none. The cast White put together to form the band brought together some of the greatest vocalists and musicians, re: Philip Bailey, Al McKay, Verdine White etc ever assembled in one band - the story is amazing an interesting. If you are a Earth Wind and Fire fan - the story along with old footage of performances is a bout as comprehensive as you are going to get.
The Best band in the world........2007-01-11
This is a wonderful look into the group's history and Maurice White's vision. It felt like it should have been longer. The old concert footage was great! Man, they used to tear it up on stage. No real discussion was done about the period during the band's breakup after Electric Universe, the solo ventures and the comeback record 'Touch The World' was not even mentioned, even in the album review section of the DVD. Nor was the '90s releases discussed. But still in all this is a wonderful story of a positive spiritual Afro-centric band that broke all barriers in the '70s. No band ever came close, except for Parliament/Funkadelic or maybe Pink Floyd, and no other band has touched the realm of professionalism and discipline since. Maurice & EWF have secured a beautiful legacy for all bands to pattern themselves after. It is interesting that they really don't recieve the recognition they should outside of their fan base. This music will live forever.
A Satisfying Look Inside A Musical Dynasty!!.......2005-11-16
The thing that I like about this DVD is that it's
straight from the people who made the legend come to life!
Maurice, Verdine, Phillip, Larry, Al, Johnny,
Fred, Ralph, Andrew and the surviving members of
the Phoenix Horns all have their say and cover
their miraculous career / journey in somewhat
intimate detail. There are home movies of the band on tour
during their hey-day, backstage footage, etc.
as well as some well-placed snipets of the music itself.
E,W & F, to me, will always be the baddest band of all time!
Those classic albums from 1973's "Head To The Sky" to 1981's
"Raise" are etched into my DNA and still provide joy
and inspiration! A worthwhile addition to your DVD collection
if your are into documentaries of the great artists who shaped
their times and future times to come!
A Success Story.......2005-08-09
Lots of great background info on one of my favorite groups. I though the first 10 minutes or so dragged, however, it picked up speed and became very intriguing soon after that. Lots of great clips - I learned stuff I never knew before about the group. worth ordering.
Very indepth and Entertaining.......2005-08-01
I bought this DVD when it was first released and I must tell you that it is very indept and entertaining. It even has footage of Maurice playing drums with Ramsey Lewis. And very early shots of the original bands first performance. A must have for any EWF fan.

Acclaimed director
Tristán Bauer presents the harrowing story of a band of Argentinean soldiers sent to fight an un-winnable war and left to bear the brutal scars of the past. After learning of a friend's attempted suicide, a journalist goes back to relive his experiences in the Falklands.
THE OFFICIAL STORY

Product Description
Australia released, PAL/Region 0 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada. LANGUAGES: Spanish (Dolby Digital 2.0), English (Subtitles), ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN (1.85:1), SYNOPSIS: This is an emotionally gripping, fictional look at a couple torn apart by the infamous Argentine campaign of killings and torture that sent thousands of accused terrorists to unmarked graves in the mid-and late-'70s. Alicia (Norma Aleandro) and Roberto (Hector Alterio) adopted a little girl (Analia Castro) during this period of governmental terror in Argentina. Alicia has always wondered about the parents of their little girl, a topic her husband has forced her into forgetting as a condition of the adoption -- he alone knows the full story. Thanks to censorship, Alicia -- like others -- is not fully aware of how much killing has gone on until her students at school start complaining that their textbook histories were written by murderers. Add to this a long conversation with a friend who had been in exile after she was tortured by the government, and Alicia starts to do some serious political and personal research on her own. The results reveal the identity of the little girl's dead parents and reveal that Alicia's husband has had a nasty hand in the government repression and dirty dealings with foreign businesses. She also learns the identity of the girl's grandmother. Her next decision will determine what to do with this information. SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene Access,

Description
The rise of the modern footballer as multi-millionaire superstar can arguably be traced to the emergence in the 1960s of one George Best. Best combined dishevelled good looks, supreme talent and a rock n roll lifestyle that made him the first in what has since become a long line of players whose antics have become big news.
Genius, Maverick, Legend, George Best is perhaps the most talented footballer ever to walk the face of the earth. Best was the best: Pele, Cruyff, Maradona - all were superb but Best had their talent and more.
George Best had the confidence and arrogance to try absolutely anything - he knew he was a genius and was not afraid to show the world. He revelled in the limelight but as the first of the new superstars, found himself unable to cope with the temptations thrown at his feet. Alcohol, late nights & women. He indulged in them all and as a result walked out of top class professional football in 1972 aged just 26.
In this unique insight George takes us back to his early years where we meet some of the characters who had an impact on his life. These include Tommy Docherty, Alex Stepney, Jim Ryan, Dick Best, Alex Best and Sir Bobby Charlton. Then its off to Old Trafford, Manchester for which he will always be remembered.
But its all the goals and the action which really make this one the Best.
Customer Reviews:
Glossy but not great.......2006-02-17
If you're a fan, you'll want this. It's a nice memento to look back on since George's death. It's slick and nicely produced. But if you're looking for any insight into the man and the player, this DVD will leave you short. The DVD is mostly a resume of George's time at Manchester United; it's not a biography. It's bolstered by interviews in the style of gentle reminiscences by old men in their armchairs with a nod to the fact that he was a bit of a lad without raking up too much controversy. There are 50 goals but not all of the best. Best was firey and passinate when he played; the DVD is gentle. After you've watched it, if you didn't live through the Best era, you'll grant that he was obviously a good player but you'll still be wondering what all the fuss was about.
