Gregory Nava (Why Do Fools Fall In Love?) directs this more-or-less official film biography of the late Mexican-American singer, Selena Quintanilla Perez (the film is coproduced by her father), which emphasizes sentimentality over conflict and plays down the star's horrific death at the hands of a deranged fan. Jennifer Lopez is quite good as Selena, whose roots we come to know through the story of her father (Edward James Olmos), a Corpus Christi singer who was rejected by white audiences. The script focuses primarily on Selena's inspiring rise, and it tries to muster some sense of urgent conflict over not-particularly-contentious issues (such as her relationship with a guitarist). But Olmos does a fine job portraying the elder Perez as a possessive sort, and the music and general buoyancy of Lopez's performance are infectious. The unavoidable subject of Selena's killer--a woman who happened to be the president of her fan club--is considerably and oddly downplayed. --Tom Keogh

Description

The Guts and Glory of the Navy! This is the movie that inspired "Saving Private Ryan." It's the true story of five brothers who fought and died together when their ship, the American cruiser Juneau, was sunk in the South Pacific during World War II. The Fighting Sullivans is something more than a worthy tribute to a pair of small town parents and the five sons they lost when the Juneau blew up in a battle off Guadalcanal on November 13, 1942. It is a heartwarming slice of Americana that will fill in the background of any number of Americans on the fighting front. The audience's awareness of the news in store for the Sullivan family adds considerably to the film's effect. The Fighting Sullivans generates emotion strictly on it's own terms and without bidding for tears. This Commemorative Edition marks the 63rd anniversary of the sinking of the Juneau. DVD features: 2005 Interview with Frank Holmgren (last living survivor of the sinking)| Video Inside the 5 Sullivan Brothers Veterans Museum| A message from Bob Neymeyer of the Grout Museum| Family Photos| Last Muster List| Memorials from family members| Survivor List| Juneau Action account letter by Lieutenant Roger W O'Neil - Mc-V (G) U S Naval Reserve| Personal Letters| Letter from President Franklin D Roosevelt| New Digital Transfer| Original Theatrical Trailer.

5 out of 5 stars Fighting Sullivans.......2007-05-13

JUST WONDERFUL, GREAT. The BEST!!
My father who was also in Navy WWII says very accurate, after he watched, several other WWII Vets' he sees also asked to borrow it, as they had all been discussing it prior to my buying the movie. Show's family life prior to war also. Just a great film, my children watched it occassionally on T.V. growing up, and now my older grandchildren are able to watch since it's on CD's.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2007-05-12

This is one of the great classic movies of all times, I loved it for years and I am so glad that Amazon finally carried it. Based on a true story it had great depth and compassion, the best ever.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-01-04

Seen this movie on televison years ago and it stood in my mind. It's an amazing movie about brotherly love through the years. I cried years ago as a child watching it and I still cry now. I recommend it for all ages.

4 out of 5 stars The Fighting Sullivans.......2006-11-10

A movie representing a strong family growing up in hard times, and the bond between its 5 sons. Based on true events. Well worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars All Americans Should See This Movie With Their Families.......2006-05-29

I saw this movie as a child and I openly wept. I recently purchased the Commemorative Edition DVD. Times haven't changed, I wept again. The movie reflects the beautiful innocence of the time as compared to the standards of today's films. The Fighting Sullivans represents the incredible sacrifice made by a family during World War II. However, it goes beyond the story of the Sullivans and encompasses the fighting spirit demonstrated in all men and women who defend our country. As a daughter of a World War II sailor who served in the South Pacific alongside the Sullivans, I highly recommend this film to families throughout the country. In fact, it should be required viewing in all American history classes. Iowa is currently in a building campaign for the Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum. After you watch the movie, you may feel inspired to support this museum or any of the hundreds of veteran's organization throughout this wonderful country.

4 out of 5 stars A good Watch........2007-06-30

While this film suffers from linear portrayals; the inevitable "Hollywooditis" that always happens with a film biography, it still is a good watch. Jennifer is absolutely perfect for the role. My biggest worry was that the makers would give in to the temptation to make this into a musical. They get ten points for not doing it! The casting is good, Jennifer is gorgeous, the staging is very good; the movie is a good watch. I think the film is a fine tribute to Selena and Hollywood did about as well as they ever do with a film bio.

5 out of 5 stars selena lives.......2007-06-23

this movie was awsome a great celebration of the life of one of the best mexican american singers i was very upset at the fact that jennifer lopez got the part of selena dont get me wrong her acting and her portrail of selena was fenomenal no one could have done it beter but jennifer lopez can never equal selenas physical at all selena was just so beautifull and jennifer looks like a monkey i truly think that they needed a true selena double to truly compleat this film and a double was not all hard to find there were a few laidies at the auditions that resembled selena 100 percent but they choose her because she had expirience with camaras jennifer did not do physical justice to the beautifull selena thank you

5 out of 5 stars selena.......2007-06-15

its the best selena movie i have ever saw or bought.

4 out of 5 stars I loved this movie but why J Lo.......2007-05-24

This is a movie that I really loved. One of the best that I have ever watched because it wasn't a movie that just dramatized Selena's death but a movie that celebrated her life. I have watched this movie over and over again and I will watch it many more times. So why am I not giving it 5 stars?

Because Jennifer Lopez should not have played Selena. Selena is or was Mexican not Puerto Rican. I feel as if the movie industry is saying that all Latinas look alike. And J Lo definitely has the typical Puerto Rican looks, especially her body, so I don't know how she got the chance to play a Mexican star like Selena. I am sure that the producers of this movie could have found a Mexican woman to play the role of Selena. As a Mexican American woman, seeing J Lo play the role of Selena was a real slap in the face.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL.......2007-04-12

This is one of the best movies about an amazing person and her trip into fame and then her untimely, unnecessay, and sad death. A must watch movie for anuone who has a heart. Entertwined is also a beautiful love story.

Musical western about a mail order bride who ditches her bashful suitor and joins a group of women intent on opening a remote whistle stop restaurant.

Format: DVD MOVIE

Amazon.com

Sometimes lively, sometimes pokey, this Technicolor MGM musical inspires mixed feelings in aficionados of the form--except on one point. No viewer will question why "On the Atchison, Topeka, & the Santa Fe" won the best song Oscar for 1946. This is a brilliant, inventive song given an epic staging. Director George Sidney pulls out all the stops for this wowser--even Marjorie Main sings, an eardrum-testing sound. The real-life Harvey Girls were waitresses imported to the far-flung Fred Harvey Hotels, civilizing oases along the railroad lines out west. The fictional Harvey Girls is set in Sandrock, where the traveling waitresses are joined by a sort of mail-order bride (Judy Garland) whose prospective husband is a bust--he's a roughhewn rancher played by Chill Wills. Garland is in fine spunky form; unfortunately, her romance is with John Hodiak (as the owner of a dance hall), that uninspiring World War II-era lead. The film's other great Johnny Mercer-Harry Warren song is the unexpectedly melancholy "It's a Great Big World," performed in a lovely trio by Garland, Virginia O'Brien, and the young Cyd Charisse. The tall, deadpan O'Brien also does a comic take on "The Wild, Wild West" while shoeing a horse. With kewpie-faced Angela Lansbury as a bespangled dance-hall gal and Ray Bolger high-stepping through a dance solo, there are enough good people on board to keep the wheels a-turning "all the way to Californ-eye-yay." --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars The Harvey Girls.......2007-01-22

A must see for any Judy Garland fan. Home of The Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe - a classic!!

4 out of 5 stars Not historically very accurate, but a good western/musical.......2006-12-30

I probably saw The Harvey Girls when I was much younger, but if I did, I don't remember anything about it. The movie was released in 1945, a year before I was born. The movie has aged better than I have!

I bought the DVD after reading the book "The Harvey Girls" by Lesley Poling-Kempes. The book gives a fascinating look at the Harvey Girls and the Fred Harvey hotels and restaurants that helped civilize the wild west. If you watch the movie expecting to see a historically accurate depiction of Harvey houses and Harvey Girls, you'll be disappointed. The movie gives at best a very superficial view of the Fred Harvey system and his Harvey Girls.

Having said that, however, I enjoyed the movie. It's an old fashioned musical with a wild west setting, and it's pretty good to boot. Judy Garland is at her absolute peak, as are a screenful of other superb actors and actresses. The musical numbers are mostly good, but "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe" is a classic (and it was the Academy Award Best Song in 1946).

The story line involving Judy Garland and John Hodiak is fairly predictable, but it's still fun to watch it develop. And this movie can be watched by everyone in the family without any embarrassment.

No, they don't make 'em like this any more, and maybe that's a bad thing.

Some additional material, including deleted musical numbers and a director commentary are nice touches to the DVD.

2 out of 5 stars The Harvey Girls review.......2006-11-04

I really enjoyed the movie. The story background is the Fred Harvey restaurants and concessions at train stations. My father worked for Fred Harvey at the Chicago and Cleveland facilities.

Regarding the movie and Judy Garland - The movie is great and Judy was one of my favorite entertainers.

4 out of 5 stars An engaging and nostalgic musical, with a fresh-faced Judy Garland (and Angela Lansbury, who almost steals the movie).......2006-07-05

The Harvey Girls is hard to beat for sheer corny, likable nostalgia. Is it one of the great MGM musicals? Not in my opinion. The narrative is too long, John Hodiak isn't an intriguing romantic lead and some of the comic relief is too broad. Still, the movie carries with it such a high degree of good-natured professionalism that it's easy to like. The story itself is uncomplicated. A group of Harvey girls arrive at Sandrock, Arizona, to open a Harvey House, one of many restaurants Fred Harvey was establishing along the western rail lines. A Harvey House offered good, wholesome food and good, wholesome company. Susan Bradley (Judy Garland) joins them when she and her groom-to-be (Chill Wills) decide in a friendly way that their mail-order marriage arrangement wasn't such a good idea. Determined to stop the Harvey House girls are Ned Trent (John Hodiak) and Sam Purvis (Preston Foster), owners of the Alhambra, a wide-open saloon, dance hall and gambling establishment across the street from the new Harvey House. Em (Angela Lansbury), the dance hall star, doesn't like the competition, either, especially when Susan and Ned begin to notice each other.

Great movie musical or not, there are many things to enjoy. Judy Garland dominates the movie. She was 23 when she made it. Despite her immense talent and almost unnatural professional skills (I mean this as a compliment), there is an innocence about her in this movie which seems fresh and unforced. She handles the comedy and pratfalls in a very winning way. Angela Lansbury steals the scenes she has with everyone except Garland, and comes close even there. Lansbury moves from a woman with a mercenary heart who is more complex than we first think to a woman who not only is willing to concede defeat to Susan when it comes to Ned, but who is instrumental in finally bringing the two together. Lansbury was 21, doesn't seem that young for an instant and was already proving her skills as an actress. The songs by Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer, with one exception, never became well known on their own but they serve the story extremely well. As usual, Mercer's lyrics capture the style of the characters and are worth listening to carefully. He was among the very best at writing lyrics that were character-driven and conversational. One particularly nice song is "It's a Great Big World," a charming combination of ruefulness and romantic hope sung by Garland, Virginia O'Brien and Cyd Charisse:

I had no petticoat trimmed with lace,
My angel cake was a pure disgrace,
My face was my fortune, my mother said,
And my dancing slippers of bright, bright red.
A million miles I have danced, or more,
In hopes Prince Charming would cross the floor,
I can't understand it, I've waltzed and I've whirled,
But my goodness me it's a great big world.
And it's cold, cold, cold,
And we'll soon be old.
But I'll keep on knitting and doing it well,
My slippers are one thing I never will sell,
My petticoat's waiting because who can tell?
It's a great big world, it's a great big world.

The big hit, "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe," is featured in an eight-minute production number at the start of the movie. It's just about worth the price of the DVD.

Do you hear that whistle down the line?
I figure that it's engine number forty nine,
She's the only one that'll sound that way.
On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe.
See the ol' smoke risin' 'round the bend,
I reckon that she knows she's gonna meet a friend,
Folks around these parts get the time o' day
From the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe.

The number is an fine example of the full-throttle MGM style...hundreds of extras taking part, different characters telling in song their stories as well as the story of what the Harvey girls were all about, the introduction of nearly all the main or featured characters, plus cowboys, horses, buckboard wagons, lariats and a giant, polished steam engine moving down the tracks...all wrapped up in this memorable and catchy song. The featured characters all have their own stories and are used in different ways. Some, such as Ray Bolger, Marjorie Main, Chill Wills and Virginia O'Brien, are used as comedy relief, some with their own numbers, others such as Cyd Charisse and Kenny Baker bring low-key subplots to the story. The look of the movie adds immeasurably to its charm...bright, Technicolor sets and costumes, perfect outdoor scenery, cowboys in immaculate pastel shirts, the bargirls in ostrich feathers and risque (but not too risque) costumes and the Harvey girls in their prim dresses and starched aprons. And all the girls, whether they work in the dance-hall or in Fred Harvey's restaurant, are gorgeous.

There's also one other bit of nice nostalgia. Six years previously, when Garland was 17 and made to look like she was 12, she and Ray Bolger as her friend the scarecrow were skipping down the yellow brick road on a wonderful adventure. With The Harvey Girls, Garland has become a young woman on the brink of romance, and Bolger is still next to her as her friend.

The DVD presentation is excellent. The extras include an interesting, perceptive commentary recorded 50 years after the movie was made by the director, George Stevens.

While Boogie Nights showed pornography's transition from sleazy cinemas to home-video dominance, Inside Deep Throat looks back to the film that introduced porn to a curious mainstream public. Released in 1972 and starring 23-year-old Linda Lovelace as sexpot whose oral sex skills (performed on well-endowed costar Harry Reems) gave the film its title (and, subsequently, the nickname of Watergate's secret informant), Deep Throat set a cultural milestone as a source of controversy, outrageous profit (mostly for its Colombo mob family financiers), and irrevocable social change. With equal parts nostalgia and historical hindsight, this briskly-paced documentary places Deep Throat in pivotal context, when Vietnam was an acknowledged disaster and American innocence was peeling away one layer at a time. Produced by Hollywood honcho Brian Grazer and catering to viewers who were too young to witness Deep Throat's impact firsthand, the film includes the legendary fellatio scene that made Lovelace an overnight sensation (hence the NC-17 rating), but it's the interviews with pop-culture VIP's like Norman Mailer, Dick Cavett, Hugh Hefner and (most amusingly) Helen Gurley Brown that add necessary perspective to what is, for better and worse, an engaging but somewhat shallow examination of a culture war that never really ended. --Jeff Shannon

Description

It was banned in 23 states. The government didn't want you to see it. Deep Throat was more than just a titillating curiosity, it was the sexually explicit film that ignited a social and political firestorm. Inside Deep Throat examines the politics and the payoffs, the porn stars and persecution of the cultural phenomenon that remains just as highly controversial today. From Oscar-winning producer Brian Grazer comes this probing look at the sensational adult film that launched a sexual and cultural revolution.

4 out of 5 stars amusing behind-the-scenes of a not-so-great porn flick.......2007-06-12

Gerard Damiano is quite the character. Intersting the way he tells the tale. Likable former pornie. Art director is another one who is all personality--with an endless stream of profanity, but done in a totally funny way (funny and entertaining to the audiance, that is.)

Truth be told, Linda Lovelace was never attractive enough or sexy enough, in my opinion, for this type of work. Carol Connors was fairly hot, though.

I could have done without the "star" cameos: Richard Dryfus and the batty chick who wrote Fear Of Flying, etc. Who cares what these people have to say & what makes them experts when it comes to sex, anyway?
Oh yeah, they were stuck in to give the doc "name-value" I suppose.

Skip the painful/useless/dull commentary by the filmmakers themselves.

Otherwise, worth seeing. Am glad that Harry Reems was able to pull himself up from being homeless (after Meese and his people went after him, etc.) and is now married and having a decent life making a living in real estate.

To tell you the truth, I always thought making a huge fuss over somethng as ridiculous as sex always struck me as not only moronic, but an absolute waste of time.

Sex? It's like eating or sneezing, breaking wind or blinking. Just part of life. Nothing more, nothing less.
We're born, we get laid (now and then) and they drop us below--for that dirt nap. Viola. It's over before you know it. So why sweat the sex?

4 out of 5 stars A Dirty Little Movie That Changed a Nation!.......2007-02-28

Everyone has a "Deep Throat" moment, the first time they seen the much publicised film. This documentary does that and more! It goes from its humble New York roots, to the Florida back roads, to mainstream America and beyond! It also tells the story about censorship, moral righteousness and free expression! But most of all, it tells about the lives of everyone who was associated with the movie and how it changed their lives. In essence, this film is about us and how we never can give up on a guilty pleasure. Check out the extras, including more trial footage from different cities and what the outcome was.

4 out of 5 stars Time capsule.......2006-12-14

"Inside Deep Throat," a documentary about the notorious porno film (starring Linda Lovelace and Harry Reems) credited with (or blamed for) bringing porn into the mainstream back in the early '70s, is a time capsule of that contentious era dominated by Women's and Gay Liberation, Vietnam, Watergate, and, yes, "Deep Throat."

I never saw the film that inspired the documentary and believe it's probably less entertaining than the jokes and commentaries it inspired, but this documentary is an intriguing look at an earlier cinematic era. The usual suspects are rounded up to comment on the film and the controversy it inspired, some of whom haven't been seen since the days when Johnny Carson ruled the airwaves and made "Deep Throat" a subject for discussion thanks to his infamous nightly "monologue."

There's Helen Gurley Brown, Hugh Hefner, and a very amusing Dick Cavett. And, of course, Gore Vidal. I had to chuckle when Vidal made his appearance. Wearing a flannel shirt, all he needed was a pitchfork in hand, and he'd look like a farmer.

But the most intriguing moments aren't provided by the celebrities. Those who put their careers, and, in some cases, their lives on the line by producing, distributing, or in some way involving themselves in the cash cow that was "Deep Throat," provide the most entertaining and informative moments.

5 out of 5 stars what an impact Deep Throat has made.......2006-06-29

I loved it. I really did. I don't know how they could improve the film. Of course, nothing is ever really perfect, so who cares? I found this film so very interesting and so very informative. It was interesting to me to see how this simple, "dirty" little picture which (according to the star) only took a couple of weeks to make (if that)and changed the course of history! Ha! What other film has had the same effect on the world? And, might I add that, according to what I have heard and read, the film grossed millions of dollars and none of the participants in the making of this film (except for those who put up the money to make it) got rich from it. Poor Linda Lovelace. It thrust her into the spotlight overnight...something I believe she wanted BUT not in the way she achieved it and she got much fame but never became rich and died poor.

I especially like watching the film with one of the commentarys "on"...not the directors so much but the one with all comments from many of the people they interviewed about the film. I like those tidbits of information.

Wow. It's amazing. Many, many Americans went from being prudish about oral sex back then or not even knowing what "deep throat" meant to kids nowadays thinking that the act isn't even sex (it is).

I found it both amusing and sad as well that, towards the end of the film, some current porn "stars" didn't even know who Linda Lovelace was and never heard of the film which started it all. Yeah, I think those girls are in the right place...

4 out of 5 stars An interesting documentary that places DEEP THROAT in historical context.......2006-05-07

Whether one likes or dislikes the legacy of DEEP THROAT, there is simply no question that it is a film that for good or ill had a significant impact on American culture. To this day it remains one of only two or three porn films that the vast majority of Americans can identify by name. This interesting documentary certainly does not attempt to make a case for DEEP THROAT as a work of art and does not try to argue that it is more than what it is: a smut film. The focus instead is more on the overall cultural impact of the film and the fate of the major participants in its making and distribution. It also attempts to use the film as a measure of where the United States was in the late sixties and where it is today. It is also, I should add, a quite funny film.

That DEEP THROAT spawned major changes in American life is beyond debate. The debate comes over whether that is a good or bad thing. What has always amazed me is the widespread popularity of porn movies in American life, a popularity that is acknowledged through statistics but not many other places. As the film indicates near its ends, during the VHS era sales and rentals of porn videos far outstripped those of mainstream movies. Now, that has changed since the advent of the Internet and DVDs (most porn sales today are over the Internet), but the fact remains that pornography accounts for more sales than mainstream feature films. The brute fact of porn is difficult to dismiss. A good friend of mine who ran a video store said that he was always amazed at the sheer breadth of people who rented porn. He told me, "Just look at anyone who passes you on the sidewalk, no matter their sex or age. That's who rents porn." And there are stats that show porn is more popular in the red states than in the blue states. This alone justifies a film about the movie that started it all off. The documentary is a bit vague on the state of porn before DEEP THROAT. I suspect too much credit is given in it for its being the first. I suspect that it is more correct to say that it was the first well known porn film. Either way, it clearly is the one that got the ball rolling.

The film is dispassionate in its approach. Does it take sides? This is hard to say. It is true that most (though by no means all) of the people involved in the making of the film are more likable than those who opposed and prosecuted its makers, especially the truly awful Charles Keating, the most famous felon to come out of the S&L debacle at the end of the Reagan era (a scandal that many economists estimate cost the American people around a trillion dollars, a fact often overlooked by those who like to fantasize that the Reagan era was a highpoint of economic development). Not that I want to be Gerald Damiano's buddy. But Damiano and Co. for the most part come across as relatively normal though quirky people.

I wish the film had done a somewhat better job of delving into Linda Lovelace, truly one of the most difficult to understand celebrities of the past few decades. In the film she seems to emerge as someone used and exploited by a host of people. One of the saddest moments may have come from a TV interview from her feminist period, in which Gloria Steinem and a talk show host talk back and forth about Lovelace as if she weren't even there, though she often seems as if she wants to say something on her own behalf. I've never been able to accept theories or her later protestations that she was an unwilling victim in the making of the film. This was not a case of white slavery. But she does seem to be a person who was never in control of her own life.

This is not a masterpiece. It is not propaganda for any political cause. It is merely a look at an important artifact of late-twentieth century American life that changed irrevocably our culture. I should add that it is probably true that our national attitudes towards sex were certainly changing anyway and we would probably still be where we are today even had the film not been made. Still it was the lightening rod for the issue. I definitely recommend this documentary to anyone who wants to see how we got to where we are.

I saw the NC-17 version of the documentary. Unlike the theatrical release this contains some brief hardcore sex (namely, Linda Lovelace demonstrating the title of the film). If you are disturbed by extreme sexual content, I would recommend seeing the R-rated theatrical release instead.

The lavish 1948 production of Joan of Arc may not qualify as a great movie, but it scores a triumphant victory as a great DVD. Thanks to a stunning restoration by the renowned UCLA Film and Television Archive, this relic from Hollywood's golden age can now be appreciated in all its magnificent Technicolor glory, restored to its original theatrical length of 145 minutes after decades of truncated TV broadcasts. Under the direction of Victor Fleming (whose credits include Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz), this is a stodgily respectable mini-epic, adapted from Maxwell Anderson's acclaimed play Joan of Lorraine and giving 33-year-old Ingrid Bergman one of her quirkiest star turns as the 19-year-old "Maid of Lorraine," destined by divinely inspired fate to rescue imperiled France from British occupation, and face trial on charges of witchcraft. Winner of three Oscars (for cinematography and costumes, and an honorary award to Producer Walter Wanger for boosting Hollywood's "moral stature") and five nominations (including acting nods for Bergman and José Ferrer, making his screen debut as the French Dauphin), the film suffers from an abundance of talky exposition and stage-bound incident, but the battle scenes are still rousing, Bergman glowing beatifically in polished armor and surrounded by a seasoned cast of studio-era character players in a rampant case of Hollywood anachronism (somehow, Ward Bond just doesn't belong in medieval France!). If you get bored during the slow parts, you can always marvel at the pristine restoration, full of heavenly sunbeams, masterful matte paintings, and enough colorful detail to make most 1948-vintage films pale by comparison. Frame by gorgeous frame, martyrdom never had a classier showcase. --Jeff Shannon

    5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Movie.......2007-05-27

Wow! This movie is truely awesome. A movie this good needs to be experienced more than once, and so will remain in my collection. Saint Joan of Arc, a "Child of God," who made no mistakes, save only one, which she was forgiven for. This is truely a heavy movie about a woman of great faith and love for God. Enough said. Take care and have a nice forever.

1 out of 5 stars a 35 year old swede plays an insipid little 17 year old frenchie: quelle masterpiece!.......2007-05-12

ingrid bergman was way too old and way too pretty for this part, but they figured they had a smash hit, i guess. the tale of the late medieval schizophrenic girl who somehow won a couple of battles (amazing what group psychosis can do, isnt it?) is told here in full pomp and splendor, but everything -- even jose ferrer in the seemingly unmessable up part of the dauphin -- falls flat. the most overrated woman in history seems to get bad movies made about her life regularly, and while this isnt as abominable as jean seberg & otto "premature" violating bernard shaw a decade later, its pretty bad.

    5 out of 5 stars A Classic Joan.......2007-03-08

This is the first version of Joan of Arc I viewed as a young girl. It is well done for the time period. Ingrid Bergman is fantastic as usual. I would recommend this movie to anyone.

    5 out of 5 stars inspiring!.......2007-01-26

I love this movie. The difference you can make when your called by God to make it, even if you think your a nobody! This old classic is better then all the remakes.

4 out of 5 stars The Maid who was sent from Heaven to support her failing France..........2007-01-03

We are in 1429, period of the "Hundred Years War" between France and England... The story follows the well-known outlines of the short life of the 15th century French saint, Joan of Arc...

Guided by divine Voices, the visionary daughter of a plowman, Joan (Ingrid Bergman), wearing men's clothes, leaves Domremy her village town in Lorraine and takes her long journey to Chinon to meet the Dauphin Charles VII (Jose Ferrer).

Inspired by God to free France from the ravages of the invading English, the peasant girl persuades the indecisive Dauphin to recruit an army and run out the ruthless invaders clearing the way for him to be crown King of France...

Joan leads the French Army to victory over the English forces at Orleans and stands proudly besides her king - as she promised - at his coronation in Rheims' Cathedral...

The Maid's followers believed that she came from God and the Burgundians and English were stricken with fear at her success... But Charles was tricky, ambition and deceitful in his goals... A counterplot was at work as a mean truce is suddenly signed with England, frustrating Joan's zeal to rid France of the enemy...

In an ironic twist of fate, the Maid of Lorraine becomes a political prisoner... She is closely guarded and kept in irons, and is tried as a witch by an English-dominated church court...

With no council to aid her, except her Voices, we see the intrigued illiterate girl, pitted against Bishop Pierre Cauchon (Francis L. Sullivan) trained in all the complexities of legal exhausting questioning...

We may ask ourselves how so many ideas and intuitions are to be found in a person so simple as she was saintly... Joan is, above all things else, the wisdom of a good people... She is the people of France, the plain people of the countryside of Lorraine which is sweet and clean through the courage and faith of the people as much as through the smell of woods and orchards...

Ingrid Bergman portrays with deep conviction her role as the delicate innocent virgin who raised the spirit of the French to hope for better times... She curbed savage England and stopped the spoiling and burning of France... Bergman's smiling face invoked spiritual revelation, the required light of a charismatic true heroine...

Is it real, or is it J-Lo? Both, as it turns out. There are 55 minutes of the actual Selena here, filmed live at Houston's Astrodome in 1995. The 23-year-old Tejano singer performs her light, catchy tunes all in Spanish, save for a '70s disco medley (which includes, poignantly, "I Will Survive"); polished and charismatic, if not extraordinarily talented, Selena was clearly on the way up before her death at 23 at the hands of an employee. That she was later portrayed onscreen by Jennifer Lopez, who has eclipsed Selena's stardom by far, no doubt partly explains the inclusion on the DVD of a 45-minute documentary (truthfully, more like a lengthy puff piece for Entertainment Tonight) about the Selena biopic. If you want to know how the filmmakers made those tough decisions about hair, clothes, and lip-syncing, you will not be disappointed. But the real thing's better. --Sam Graham

They don't make 'em like Branded anymore. Actually, they hardly make 'em at all. Westerns, that is, with their big skies and scenic technicolor vistas, rousing musical scores, cattle and cowpokes, bad guys and prairie damsels, horses and wagons and dust. Branded has all of that, and a good story, decent acting, and superior writing to go with it. Alan Ladd plays Choya, a morally ambiguous loner (asked if he has any friends or kinfolk, he submits "my guns" and "my horse") and falsely-accused bandit who gets pulled into a "foolproof" million dollar scam that involves impersonating the long-lost son of a rich Texas cattle rancher. Needless to say, complications ensue. The villain (Robert Keith) starts getting antsy; the rancher, Lavery (Charles Bickford), and his wife turn out to be kind, decent folks; Choya takes an interest in his "sister" (Mona Freeman) that goes well beyond fraternal devotion; and his conscience kicks in, too. His ruse revealed, feeling guilt-ridden and seeking redemption, Choya spends the second half of the film on a quest to find the real missing Lavery heir (no easy task, as "Tonio" has been raised by a notorious Mexican outlaw)… and, in the end, to discover that what he really wants and needs is the family he's just betrayed. We all know how it will turn out, of course, but Branded is a good, wholesome family fare, and a lot of fun to boot. This DVD release contains no bonus features. --Sam Graham

4 out of 5 stars A Strong Story And Alan Ladd's Performance Make This A First Rate Western.......2005-11-27

"All my life I've been a snake...lived by my wits...gotten what I've wanted any way I wanted it. Just lately, I've been wonderin'...if...just for once...I could do somethin' straight...do somethin' a little decent."

Choya (Alan Ladd) finds himself in the middle of a cruel con, and then finds he has a conscience. In Branded, a very good Western, Ladd plays a man who has always done what he wants, a loner at heart. "You got any friends?" an old man asks him. "My guns," Choya says. "Kinfolk?" "My horse."

Choya meets P. Jefferson Leffingwell (Robert Keith), who shows Choya how he can claim to be the lost son of the Lavery family, wealthy ranch owners. The son was kidnapped more than 20 years ago and has never been heard of since. Richard Lavery (Charles Bickford) renews each year a $100,000 reward in the hope of hearing something about his son. Choya and Leffingwell plan to split the reward, and with Choya accepted as the son, Leffingwell points out that in time he'll inherit the cattle ranch as well...and maybe to speed things up they'll even help Lavery into an early grave.

A tattooed birthmark and Choya's own cleverness do the trick. Lavery and his wife, fragile emotionally since the child was taken, and the Lavery's daughter, Ruth (Mona Freeman), accept Choya completely. Then something happens that now drives the movie into a new direction. He falls for Ruth and he is changed by the decency and openness of the Laverys. He decides to redeem himself by trying to find the real son and then disappearing. This sets off yet more unexpected developments.

Branded, in my view, is an excellent Western. There's great scenery, of course, and plenty of action. What gives this movie a dramatic wallop, however, is a strong story, the drama of a lost son, of twists that involve family feelings and the issue of what makes a real father. Not the least of its strengths is Alan Ladd's performance. Ladd may not have been much of an actor, but something about his on-screen personality brought out the image of a loner with a code of honor. That quality of silence combined with strength, of righteousness that could be aroused to do right, is what he brought to his best roles and which still make so many of his movies worth watching.

Bickford, as so often, plays a strong, decent man. Keith is first rate as an utterly amoral and greasy crook. And Joseph Calleia does an outstanding job as a man, like Bickford, who has to decide what loving a son really means.

The DVD color transfer is in great shape. There are no extras.

The theme of a long lost heir who returns and who may not be true is an old one It's always good for a strong story. If you like mysteries, I recommend Josephine Tey's book, Brat Farrar. Brat is the long lost son who reappears and who may not be who he claims. One of the complications is that Brat has a twin...who refuses to accept him.

this is one of the best western i have seen.where alan ladd's performance is powerful, razor sharp with a whip lashing command in his voice. who went to rob the cattle baron charles bickford of their fortune as their long lost son -somewhere along the line he had a change of heart and brings home their real lost son who was removed from the family when he was only 5 yrs old and given to a mexican bandit across the river who raised him as his own.i think it is one of the must have movies.

With Michael Curtiz (Casablanca) as director, Cary Grant in the lead, and wall-to-wall songs by Cole Porter, how could Night and Day lose? Why, by taking broad liberties with the composer's life story and failing to live up to expectations. If you can overlook such shortcomings, however, it's lively entertainment that doesn't completely deserve the scorn it has elicited. Grant is good as a bon vivant who had a way with words but lacked the discipline to pursue a career in law. As a singer, on the other hand, he's merely adequate. Curtiz wisely has the fine supporting actresses (Jane Wyman, Ginny Simms, etc.) handle the big numbers such as "You're the Top." Also, Porter's story was meant for black and white. The Technicolor process adds an unfortunate garishness to the tale of a man whose very name has become a synonym for elegance. With Mary Martin and Monty Woolley as themselves. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

    Description

Swellegant and elegant. Deluxe and delovely. Cole Porter was the most sophisticated name in 20th-century songwriting. And to play him on screen, Hollywood chose debonair icon Cary Grant. Grant stars for the first time in color in this fanciful biopic. Alexis Smith plays Linda, whose serendipitous meetings with Cole lead to a meeting at the altar. More than 20 Porter songs grace this tale of triumph and tragedy, with Grant lending his amiable voice to You're the Top, Night and Day and more. Monty Woolley, a Yale contemporary of Porter, portrays himself. And Jane Wyman, Mary Martin, Eve Arden and others provide vocals and verve. Lights down. Curtain up. Standards embraced by generations are yours to enjoy Night and Day.

2 out of 5 stars I get no kick from this movie.......2006-12-23

Very little of the actual Cole Porter exists in "Night and Day," a scrubbed-down version of the legendary Broadway songwriter's life. While Cary Grant is wonderfully charismatic, the movie itself is both fluffy and stretched out, with the holes patched by colourful musical numbers.

We're introduced to Cole (Grant) as he finishes one year at Yale, but disappoints his grandfather by saying that he's quitting to be a songwriter. He and his professor Monty Woolley (played by self) manage to scrounge up the money for a brilliant musical -- only to have World War I break out on opening night, thus destroying the show.

But after being injured, Cole regains his musical skills, with the help of his soon-to-be-wife Linda (Alexis Smith). Soon he's world-famous for his sparkling songs and brilliant dancing... but fame has a price, and Linda is growing tired of being second-fiddle to Cole's career. Things get even worse when he has a crippling fall from a horse.

Given that this movie was made in 1946, Porter gets the deluxe whitewashing -- inner demons, depression, chronic pain, homosexuality and a platonic marriage are all watered down into a typical Hollywood romance. Only the final close-up of Grant -- looking stiff and slightly ominous -- may hint at the lack of a storybook ending.

Unfortunately, the movie before it is rather corny, with melodramatic confrontations and the hokey handling of real-life tragedies (Porter's near-crippling). It's just fluff. And being turned into fluff, there's too little material included to spread around, so the filmmakers patched it with kitschy versions of Porter's songs, all in eyepoppingly garish colours. Okay, I loved that mad tap-dancing number, but that's about it.

Grant plays a purely fantasy Porter, but he does so with suave charm and style, as well as good chemistry with the elegant Alexis Smith. And Monty Woolley -- the real friend, albeit much older -- is fun as a professor with a great love of the theatre. He gets all of the funnier lines too ("The face and chin belong to me -- the beard belongs to the world").

"Night and Day" is an amusing fluff piece with good acting from Grant and Smith, but not much else to recommend it. It's too in love with Porter's songs and Technicolor to register a real story.

2 out of 5 stars Hoaky and inaccurate.......2006-01-22

The main tension of this film, Porter's devotion to his career vs. his wife's longings for his attentions, is sad and pathetic, all the more so because the movie's conclusion seems to be some kind of romantic reunion between the two. Is it celebrating it, or does Grant's tortured look over Linda's shoulder betray darker, more forboding elements in their relationship. Be that as it may, they never really delve into Porter's life in any gripping, realistic way. You can hear the music better performed many, many places. It's fun to watch Wooley and Martins' performances, as well as the cameos by the likes of Eve Arden. Not a keeper, but worth seeing once if your a fan of any of the performers in the film or whom the film is about.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful and touching tribute.......2007-06-27

I enjoyed every moment of this DVD. It was touching, informative, and entertaining. Selena was a once in a lifetime superstar whose beauty and talent reached so many people in spite of the fact that her life was cut so short. I enjoyed the info about her family, a wonderful, closely knit family who supported each other every step of the way.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Selena Biography DVD.......2007-05-07

I loved the different music videos from her, snatches of her personal life, the opinions of those who loved her. I loved her when she was alive, she looked to be so full of fun and laughter and through the DVD I could see I was right. Pefect DVD to own for a never-dying fan.

    5 out of 5 stars Selena Remembered.......2007-03-21

I only recently heard about Selena and was so taken by this young lady being cut down in her prime. The DVD Remembered is very good and takes you back over her short career and just how the family grew together and really it was just to virtually survive. Sincve then I have been loking for C/ds andDVD's that can tell me more of this amazing woman. The DVD did much to strength her memory. I am amazed also of the number of people in Australia who have not heard of Selena. This DVD has done much to enliven my views and to have others apprerciate this womans great charms for everyone who were fortunate to come into contact.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome video to own!! Tells a beautiful story, and shows how much SELENA had to offer!!.......2006-07-03

This DVD was BEAUTIFULLY MADE, leaving viewers with a "happy", yet "sad" feeling after getting to know who SELENA really was. It takes viewers along her life's journey, with home video clips, non-published interviews, and behind-the-scenes footage of the making of her films, videos and accomplishments.

It begins from early childhood, showing a short interview and video clips of her first performances in the family restaurant. both as a person and as a performer. You get to "know" her, after hearing her speak and seeing her expressions. And you can feel the emotions that everyone close to her felt. In fact, it left me wanting to see more. But the video nears the end, just as did in Selena's life-unexpectedly, and when things were just beginning to come together for her.

And although very little is mentioned of her death, you cannot help but "feel" the sadness and the loss, because Selena's voice is no longer heard, and fellow performers, friends and family speak of her in the "past tense".

There was sooo much Selena had going for her, and so much that she had to offer. And sadly, her life was tragically cut short. After meeting her and knowing her story, those who hear her music will appreciate it even more. I believe that the makers of this DVD captured that essence incredibly!!

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful insight .......2005-07-08

This is one of the best dvd I have seen a while. You get to see a lot of cool things like selena coke commercal, live cips and much more so I think you should pick up your copy today. I know I glad I did.

This backstage showbiz saga was quickly put into production at Warners when Doris Day proved to be the breakout star of the moment in her first film, Romance on the High Seas. And although Doris has a basket of tuneful numbers and the movie itself boasts a crazy Bugs Bunny sequence, it has the look of something rushed into service. Doris spots the main chance when talent agent Jack Carson needs to replace his egotistical client, crooner Lee Bowman. Some conventionally enjoyable climbing-the-ladder scenes follow (which bear a resemblance to Doris Day's real-life struggles to catch on as a band singer, such as trouping while raising small child). Equally conventional, but less convincing, is a romantic contrivance to delay the inevitable Day-Carson pairing. The movie is awash in Technicolor, and director Michael Curtiz crams some wonderful vintage landmarks of Los Angeles into the picture: the Brown Derby restaurant, Schwab's Drugstore. The color also shows off Eve Arden's red hair, although her sardonic style requires no color enhancement. Martin Scorsese has acknowledged My Dream Is Yours as a key influence on his musical, New York, New York, and the unhappy romance and candy-colored photography give a hint why. And the Bugs Bunny thing is a live-action/cartoon blend (à la the Gene Kelly-Jerry the Mouse dance in Anchors Aweigh), directed by Friz Freleng, that puts Day and Carson in rabbit suits. That's the most inspired sequence, so be advised. --Robert Horton

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Atom-Francid Mottletry.......2007-04-16

Quite an enjoyable late 1940s musical, very unprepossessing (in a good way). While director Michael Curtiz could have staged much of this with considerably greater flourish and "artsiness" (as Vincente Minnelli might have), he chooses instead to tell the story directly, with little adornment, save for the deep resonance of the Technicolor palette (which is also restrained compared to other color musicals of the period) and the late-deco shininess of the urban landscape and the radio station in particular. The performances, likewise, are mostly cool and tempered, with Doris Day admirably containing the hamminess that would be her stock-in-trade during the 1950s. Given the sobriety of the narrative up until the third act, the ending is especially hard-hitting and emotionally effective.

There is the drawback of the musical number with Bugs Bunny (directed by Friz Freleng, Warner Bros,' least imaginative animation director), which halts the narrative flow rather than enhancing it, while some of the minor attempts at comedy fall flat in comparison to the dramatic elements.

Beyond that, this is a moving and understated musical melodrama that deserves a place alongside the better-known classics of the era.

5 out of 5 stars Wake Up, Freddie.......2006-03-18

Oddly depressing Doris Day film story has more in common with proto-noir type movies like POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE or A STAR IS BORN than later Day musicals. This one definitely concentrates on "Day of the Locust" spectacle of talent flocking to Hollywood for their big break, only to meet shabby treatment and disappointment. The movie leaves a sour taste in one's mouth. I'd say a good 3/5 of this film is all about how hard Jack Carson sweats to get Doris a chance as a singer, but nobody wants to take a flyer on an untried talent. And you feel for him, but it doesn't change the fact that he's sort of a florid "death of a salesman" sort of loser.

Scene after scene, beautifully directed by Michael (FOUR DAUGHTERS) Curtiz, plays up the angle of the beautiful scenery (has Los Angeles ever looked so dreamy>) versus the shattered dreams of movieland wannabes. I;ve never been a huge fan of S Z Sakalln, the Austrian actor known as "Cuddles," but he's especially repulsive here as a radio sponsor with absolute, godlike powers over the little people who toil on his show, "The Hour of Enchantment." He has only one soft spot, a tiny dog he calls "Sally." He's creepy here, like Charles Coburn in THE PARADINE CASE. Every time Jack Carson has to approach him to ask him to listen to Miss Day one more time, you cringe, for Cuddles doesn't show a single sign of humanity, his self-aborption and selfishness reach Bunuelian levels.

And what is with the all girl orchestra, dressed in flimsy pastel togas, run by that martinet conductor? How lesbian were they trying to get? The conductor is stern enough to make Eve Arden, the radio producer who oversees their work, seem like a femme next to her.

As many have noted, the surreal part of the film is an animated sequence, set at Easter time, in which Doris' little son Freddie, who doesn't otherwise play much of a part in the action of the film overall, is left alone in a fancy bedroom crowded with stuffed rabbits and Easter eggs. He's sleepy and the film changes to a Dali evocation of his nightmares; the walls pull back, the toys grow huge, and suddenly Bugs Bunny (and Tweety) appear singing this crazy "Wake Up" type number that terrifies the little boy. It's so anxiety provoking that even watching it I broke out into a sweat. It just gets worse and worse as two stuffed rabbits turn into Doris Day and Jack Carson, who sing faster and faster while dressed in Uncle Wiggily rabbit costumes. I haven't seen anything as frightening in years, not since the SCREAM movies came out. And yet the grim, anxiety-filled mise-en-scene of MY DREAM IS YOURS is a fertile hatching ground for the birth of monsters.

    Bring to DVD, please!

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome.......2005-10-30

What a wonderful movie. I saw this one several years ago on TCM and instantly fell in love with it. While not a true Doris Day fan in the strictest sense, I found her to be one of the era's most natural and appealing actresses in this film. She gets a chance to play comedy and drama and does well in both areas. The songs are also great to listen to. The highlights include Canadian Capers, a feel good jump and jive kind of song that initially gets her discovered, and I'll String Along With You, probably one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. She sings this song to her young son to get him to sleep. Although written as a love song in the classic sense, it perfectly captures the love shared between a parent and child. You can feel the emotion in her voice as she sings. As a father of three beautiful children, that moment in the film really hit home. All of the other actors do a terrific job in moving the production along. Jack Carson and Eve Arden are their usual selves and provide some of the films most comedic moments. If you get a chance to see this film, enjoy it with a special someone and you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Doris Day at her best!.......2004-04-28

Doris Day plays a struggling telephone operator that also sings on the side well one day down on his luck Producer Jack Carson hears her singing and hires her to sing for a new company he then figures out that she has a little boy!
