In this 1982 courtroom drama written by David Mamet and directed by Sidney Lumet, Paul Newman found the perfect role for a transitional period of his stellar career. As alcoholic Boston lawyer Frank Galvin, Newman shook off his screen persona as a handsome, blue-eyed hunk to portray an aging, weary man whose best years are behind him, with a shot-glass future that looks very bleak indeed. But when Galvin is given a chance to redeem himself--by proving medical negligence in the case of a comatose woman--he makes one final effort to regain his self-respect and tarnished reputation. He's an underdog against formidable odds, facing a powerful, politically connected lawyer (James Mason, slick as ever) who will do anything to win his case, regardless of professional ethics. Further complicating matters is a woman (Charlotte Rampling) who only appears to be worthy of Galvin's trust and love, until Galvin's best friend and colleague (Jack Warden) proves otherwise. Excellent as both courtroom drama and riveting character study, the film crackles with Mamet's sharp dialogue; and Lumet's direction is a brilliant example of forceful restraint. The film gave Newman one of the best roles of his career; many felt he deserved the Oscar (he lost to Ben Kingsley in Gandhi) that would belatedly be given to Newman for The Color of Money. Along with Hud, Cool Hand Luke, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Verdict ranks highly as a signature performance by one of America's all-time greatest actors. --Jeff Shannon

Paul Newman's Finest Performance, in Tale of Redemption..........2007-06-22
In a career of unforgettable portrayals, "The Verdict" stands as Paul Newman's pinnacle; as a shattered idealistic lawyer, on an alcoholic road to self-destruction, finding a chance at redemption, he is absolutely perfect. With respect to Ben Kingsley, Newman SHOULD have won the 'Best Actor' Oscar in 1982!
Directed by Sidney Lumet, from a remarkably candid screenplay by David Mamet, this is a film that never makes a wrong step. Newman's 'Frank Galvin' is not heroic, or even likable, in the film's opening scenes, but he finds, in a simple malpractice suit, an injustice so blatant that he sees an opportunity to redeem himself...but he'll have to defeat a rich, duplicitous law firm (headed by legendary James Mason), argue before an indifferent judge (Milo O'Shea), and, worst of all, face betrayal from within his tiny circle of friends, if he has any hope of rising out of his personal 'hell'.
With a superb cast, including the remarkable Jack Warden as his ex-mentor/best friend, and Charlotte Rampling, as the woman he trusts far too much, "The Verdict" is raw, powerful, and occasionally disturbing, but never dull!
This new two-disc edition is certainly THE version to own, with commentary by Newman and Lumet, and an entire disc of extras, including Lumet and Newman's personal recollections, and several 'Making of' documentaries, from 1982, and today. You'll never find a more complete presentation of a truly extraordinary film!
There are few films that I can watch, again and again, and never grow tired of..."The Verdict" is one. Bravo to Newman, Lumet, Mamet, and everyone involved in creating this classic!
Mesmerizing. .......2007-01-01
The Verdict is one of the most powerful films I've ever seen in my life. Frankly, I'm not sure what to rave over more--Newman's acting ability or the script itself. Imagining a physically gifted and charismatic man like Newman as an alcoholic loser on his last legs is not an easy thing to do, but his performance accomplishes this seamlessly. As for Mason, what a loss his death was because even nearing the end of his life he could do absolutely everything. His portrayal of Concannon is quite amazing. In O'Shea, Warden, and Rampling the lesser characters become quite major, and the courtroom finale is so good that I watched it several times over again. This should be on everyone's Top 50 list, in my humble opinion.
Great film and an unforgettable acting performance.......2006-11-10
Frank Galvin (Paul Newman) is on a downward slide as an ambulence-chasing alcoholic lawyer when his associate (Jack Warden) tries to slap him out of his stupor in order to remind him that he is throwing away an opportunity to get back on his feet. Galvin starts going through the motions of collecting information about a case that involves a young child-bearing woman who suffered brain damage as a result of being given the wrong anaesthesia. Some of his old fight comes back to him when he starts to realize the negligence involved, and before he has thought much about it, he starts on the path of what he takes to be doing the right thing. But doing the right thing can be a formidible undertaking. He had once lost a prestigious job and his wife had divorced him after he tried to do right thing. Now, as he struggles to clear out the cobwebs, before he realizes it, he has managed to alienate almost everyone, including his previously very trusting clients, and faces almost all by himself a power structure that is aware of and capable of subverting his every move.
The judge (Milo O'Shea) is always eating in his chambers, the defense attorney (James Mason) and his legions of lawyers are constantly winking and nodding at each other: they are like caricatures used as devices to condense the viciousness of self-interest. The greatness of this film especially concerns the script and the acting force of Paul Newman. The contrast is striking between the muddled, uncertain man on the verge of being a complete failure and the flashes of brilliance that he shows as he fights with his back against the wall. Some of the oratory has a Shakespearian quality to it.
There are no other cases. This is the case!.......2006-06-30
That was Paul Newman's response to Jack Warden, as Warden massages Mr. Newman's back and tries to assuage him by telling him there will be other cases. ( Pardon me, I always wanted to use the word ASSUAGE in a review ).
I live in Connecticut, and my wife and I drive thru Westport regularly, on our way to Trader Joe's. I know exactly where Mr. Newman lives,( I'll never tell ) and I always kid to my wife,
" I wonder what Paul is doing today? " Then I jokingly say that maybe we'll see him at Trader Joe's ( grocery store ) or at Mario's ( great place for lunch or dinner). Of course if I ever did actually meet him, I'd be stammering and babbling just like Jackie Gleason used to do in his old Honeymooner's television show. But enough of my dreaming. So, how was the movie? Sometimes there are events or moments in a movie that stay with you for a long time. In this movie, those times were: " There are no other cases..This is the case! " and the confrontation Mr. Newman had with the judge, when he proclaims, " I know about you! " as he taps his fingers on the judge's desk. Classic moments.
If I ever had a chance to become an actor, and had my pick of
acting coaches, one of them would be Paul Newman. I'm not sure how he does it, but somehow, after watching him on screen for a few moments, I forget he is Paul Newman, and believe he is the character he is portraying.I guess that's the " magic " of great acting. They make it look so effortless. And now onto Jack Warden. He is perhaps one of the most under-rated actors in history. A great performance from a great actor.
Back to Paul Newman. The next time you watch one of his movies, watch the pauses...the times when he's not speaking. It's the entire package that makes an actor great. It's the phrasing, the reaction, the eye movements, the pauses and how long he holds them. ( Sure the director has a lot of input too)- but just watch him. What you are witnessing is a STAR in action. As I write this ( June 29, 2006 ) Paul Newman is 81 years old. He may be a little slower, a little more wrinkled, but his acting just gets better with age. ( Watch Empire Falls ). I truly hope he makes more movies. And who knows, perhaps one day I WILL run into him at Trader Joe's or Mario's place. And in true Jackie Gleason form, say to him, " Hubba, Hubba, Hubba. "
And that, my friends, will be no act.
The last gem of Sidney Lumet.......2006-04-18
This outstanding and bold director has always paid special attention respect the dark side of the state of things; like in this case where a lawyer practically out of the game due the drink, decides to assume a delicate case of unorthodox medical praxis. Please notice how Lumet works with grayish tunes in the lawyer ' s office to accent his personal drama.
Go for this emblematic film, where Paul Newman makes a delirious performance.

What more can one say.......2007-01-11
except these are among the best films made and the best of Paul Newman.
Two of his best films + his most popular one in a bargain package.......2005-12-27
This is like most bargain multi-pack DVD packages: it simply takes three pre-existing DVD's (with the same inserts and plastic cases) and puts them in a boring, cardboard slipcase.
The concept isn't exciting, but economically, this is an excellent deal. It would be more expensive to buy these DVD's individually, and there really isn't any filler either. "The Verdict" and "The Hustler" are not only two of Newman's best performances, their two of his best films, even better than "Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid," which is probably his most popular movie and is still entertaining decades later.
Paul Newman's easily one of Hollywood's best actors of the last 50 years, and this is an efficient way to scoop up a good chunk of his work.

Nazis on trial.......2007-04-26
From 1963 to 1965, twenty-two men, all former members of Hitler's SS who had served as officials at the Auschwitz death camp during World War II, were rounded up and put on trial in Frankfurt, Germany, for so-called "crimes against humanity" - a euphemistic phrase that is all too feeble in describing the unspeakable atrocities these incarnations of evil perpetrated on their fellow human beings. The documentary "Verdict on Auschwitz," made for German television in 1993 but not released theatrically in the United States until early 2007, provides a gripping, soul-searing account of that trial.
The 175-minute movie is divided into three sections that run roughly an hour apiece and cover slightly different aspects of the trial. The first, entitled "The Investigation," focuses on the German government's efforts in the late 1950's and early 1960's at tracking down many of the key Nazi leaders who had either fled the country (many to South America) or were living prosperous and quiet lives under assumed names in the very same country where they had perpetrated their crimes. Part I also details the early stages of the trial which included taped testimonies from a number of the survivors (over 350 in total), as well as from "outsiders" who visited the camp on "official" business. Because cameras were not allowed in the courtroom after the first fifteen minutes of the trial, these audio tapes, in many cases, have become our sole connection with the participants in the drama. These voices, echoing down the corridors of time, provide a chilling first hand account of the atrocities. In addition to the recordings, the film includes interviews with a number of the participants in the trial, newsreel footage of the camp both before and after its liberation by Russian forces, and, perhaps most chillingly, shots of Auschwitz as it appears today (or more accurately, in 1993), its dilapidated, abandoned buildings serving as mute, ghostly witnesses to the most mind-numbing human tragedy of the 20th Century.
The second part, labeled simply "The Trial," chronicles in greater detail the testimony and documentation the prosecution used to bolster its case over the two-year course of the trial (the Nazis were nothing if not efficient in recording their actions for posterity). The third part - "The Verdict" - wraps up the case with the closing statements by both the prosecution and the defense as well as final statements by the men on trial. Even though the "verdict" seems preordained from the start, there's no denying that there is an intensely purgative effect for both the victims and the rest of us in seeing these human monsters exposed for what they are and finally brought to justice, even if the sentences do not seem exactly commensurate with the gravity of the crimes.
Like any work of art that attempts to come to grips with the horrors of that period, "Verdict on Auschwitz" can go only so far in providing answers for an event for which no satisfactory answers could ever truly be found. Why in this particular place? Why at that specific time? And how could such seemingly rational, "civilized" individuals - most mere businessmen with wives and children of their own - forsake all sense of common decency and humanity, and coldly and methodically participate in the wide scale torture and wholesale extermination of so many of their fellow human beings? We will surely never know the answers to these questions, but a movie like "Verdict on Auschwitz" serves as a painful but invaluable reminder that such things have happened in the past and they could very well happen in the future (as they clearly are in various parts of the world at this very moment). The lesson of "Verdict on Auschwitz" is that we ignore such reminders at our peril.
A piece of history, stories that sadden ..........2007-04-23
Verdict on Auschwitz is a harrowing three-hour ordeal of history and personal recorded testimony, and a filmed record of the infamous Nazi excuse: I was just following orders. Rolf Bickel and Dietrich Wagner almost do too good a job, chronicling so many stories, so many details, and so much anguished testimony that the entirety is almost unbearable for a single viewing. This is a tale of men who committed monstrous crimes and a troubled German society that finds itself revisiting a dark past through the Frankfurt trials, lasting almost three years.

Truly excellent on many levels........2006-08-14
The performances are outstanding and the chemistry does sizzle -- but also wonderful are the scenes with the blind. There were haunting moments, poetic moments. The story itself is rather beside the point, but still interesting. This film is all about the visuals, the acting, the mood. An unexpected delight that I saw on Lifetime, of all places, this weekend. Now I want to buy it for friends.
Quiet Tone Poem in Muskogee.......2005-11-09
Back in 1984, the hit at the Canne Film Festival was another quiet and cerebral film called Paris, Texas - directed by the German director Wim Wenders (but that was then, and this is now). Here, we get the Danish director Billy August creating a hypnotic imaging of desolate Oklahoma small towns, an innocent woman on death row, and the various players around her story in the last days leading up to her execution. As always, Aidan Quinn is just right for his part as a complex lawyer turned tabloid huckster and alcoholic, who finally finds redemption in the last motel on the rain slick streets. But the real standout here is the always underrated Connie Nielsen, who smolders in this performance and the chemistry between her and Quinn is what great movies (and their moments) are made of. I guess in this age of mindless reality TV, films of this quiet beauty, intelligence, and grace are just too slow, pondering, and challenging for today's audiences. Too bad - this film is a keeper and a real gem!

WHO KILLED THE JUDGE?.......2005-02-24
VERDICT IN BLOOD is one of four Canadian made for TV movies in the Joanne Kilbourn mysteries. Wendy Crewson does a solid job as Joanne, a former cop who is now working as a tv correspondent. An old friend, a judge (Sally Kellerman) is murdered in her home, the apparent victim of a burglary gone wrong. Kilbourne joins her new beau detective (Shawn Doyle) to investigate the killing. There are plenty of suspects: an ex-con (Robert Davi) who is running a halfway house for kids; the victim's two daughters; a blackmailing lawyer; and a local kid that Kellerman provided shelter for. These movies are entertaining in a MURDER SHE WROTE kind of way. Cerebral, with little violence and heavy plotting. I first saw A KILLING SPRING, and enjoyed it immensely too. If you're tired of plotless special effects gory movies, the Joanne Kilbourne series is well worth your time.

Description
Marty Rockman, the notorious producer of reality-TV, has a brand new show "Citizen Verdict". Each week a real criminal case will be tried before the American people, but this time they're also the jury. If the defendant is voted guilty in a death penalty case, Rockman will televise the execution. Selected by phone-in vote, the show's first contestant is Ricky Carr -- a man accused of the rape and murder of popular celebrity-chef Dolly Hamilton. The case is a surefire ratings winner. But when an investigation begins, it becomes apparent that Ricky may be innocent. His fate is in the hands of the viewers. The film stars Jerry Springer, Armand Assante, and Roy Scheider.
Customer Reviews:
Very BAD movie.......2007-01-23
this movie goes really slow. Not what we thought it was supposed to be. A reality show is much better. Did not expect a lot from this movie but it was a total waste of monies!! Don't bother to buy or rent. Not worth it.
Much better than I expected.......2005-11-10
With the so-so cover art and Jerry Springer as one of the stars, I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised! Great acting, good production and king of scary, when you consider the movie's premise. Overall, not an academy-award winner, but a great evening's entertainment. Armand Assante gives a good performance.

Disc 1: VERDICT,THE Disc 2: RUNAWAY JURY Disc 3: COMPULSION Disc 4: CLASS ACTION
Customer Reviews:
Quality of plots vary among selections.......2007-03-09
"Runaway Jury" does justice to John Grisham's best-selling novel and they did a good job with casting, directing and acting. Good quality DVD. This is the best movie of the four in Legal Legends Collection Box Set. I would rate "Runaway Jury" ***** and next time would only purchase "Runaway Jury".
"The Verdict" I didn't finish viewing the movie, I would rate it * because of Paul Newman's overacting--it became tedious watching him "drunk"--I have resold this DVD.
"Class Action" I would rate ****; Gene Hackman is excellent and it was an interesting movie although there were few surprises in the plot.
"Compulsion" I have not had a chance to view yet--will rate in the future.

Product Description
Inspired by a true story, Prince of the City stars Treat Williams as a Manhattan detective who agrees to help the US Department of Justice weed out corruption in the NYPD. Williams agrees on the assurance that he'll never have to turn in a close friend. Wired for sound, Williams almost immediately stumbles upon a police conspiracy to smuggle narcotics to street informants in order to insure cooperation. While this might be condonable in a stretch, the fact is that the many cops are using the drugs on their own, and are also highly susceptible to bribes. Williams gets the goods on the miscreants, but in so doing he breaks the "code" and becomes a pariah to his fellow officers. As we learn in the unsettling final scene, Williams will always be considered a "fink," even by honest cops.
