If a film fan had never heard of director Mike Leigh, one might explain him as a British Woody Allen. Not that Leigh's films are whimsical or neurotic; they are tough-love examinations of British life--funny, outlandish, and biting. His films share a real immediacy with Allen's work: they feel as if they are happening now. Leigh works with actors--real actors--on ideas and language. There is no script at the start (and sometimes not at the end). Secrets and Lies involves Hortense (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), an elegant black woman wanting to learn her birth mother's identity. She will find it's Cynthia (Brenda Blethyn), who is one of the saddest creatures we've seen in film. She's also one of the most real and, ultimately, one of the most lovable. Timothy Spall is Cynthia's brother, a giant man full of love who is being slowly defeated by his fastidious wife (Phyllis Logan).

There is a great exuberance of life in Secrets & Lies, winner of the Palme D'Or and best actress (Blethyn) at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival--not Zorba-type life but the little battles fought and won every day. Leigh's honest interpretation of daily life is usually found only on the stage. Secrets & Lies is more realistic than a stage production, however, especially when Leigh shows us uninterrupted scenes. As the title suggests, all the characters in this excellent sci-fi series are concealing something: the three adventurers from the future, the mysterious biologist Takuma Nakasa, the deadly Ryuko Saito--even the innocent Natsume may not be all that she seems. Many of these secrets are revealed in the linked flashbacks of "Future Tense." Ryo and Koji are not innocent students, but scientists who were deeply involved in the research that transformed Gawl into a Generator, a human capable of metamorphosing into a fantastic monster. When Ryo inadvertently discovered that evil secrets underlay the research program and their entire society, the trio left 2145 for the near future (2007), hoping to stop the experiments that produced those evils. They haven't had much luck: Gawl may be an exceptionally powerful Generator, but Saito's monsters are taxing even his strength, perhaps fatally. Not realizing that the future of humanity is at stake, Masami plays Nancy Drew and complicates matters further. Many anime adventures have dealt with the paradoxes posed by altering the past to prevent an undesirable future, but few have done so as deftly as Gawl. Director Seiji Mizushima continues to build suspense through each episode, balancing the comic attraction between Gawl and Masami with hard-hitting action sequences. Tuoma Inaba is a country boy who's determined to make a big splash in Tokyo, but things start to go wrong the moment he arrives to take his college entrance exams and a gorgeous call girl turns up in his hotel room. Urara is a high school senior who has loved Tuoma since they were both kids, and she knows that her cousin is lying to Meiko. She also knows that Meiko has a boyfriend. Things are going to get messy. Sakura Diaries deals with mature themes, but it is not as explicit as the cover art suggests. Instead it's a funny and surprisingly sophisticated sex comedy about a naive young man whose obsession with one woman blinds him to the love of another. It's an old story, but these first episodes suggest that Sakura Diaries may have some surprises in store. Rated 17 and up for nudity and sexual situations. --Simon Leake
