While hardly a spiritual upgrade of the slasher film, this high-concept teen body-count thriller drops hints of The Sixth Sense into the smart-aleck sensibility of Scream. Helmed by X-Files veteran James Wong, who cowrote the screenplay with longtime creative partner Glen Morgan, Final Destination is an often entertaining thriller marked by an unsettling sense of unease and scenes of eerie imagery. It suffers, however, from a schizophrenic tone and a frankly ludicrous premise. A high school Cassandra, Alex Browning (Devon Sawa of Idle Hands), wakes from a preflight nightmare and panics when he's convinced the plane is doomed. His ruckus bumps seven passengers from the Paris-bound plane, which immediately explodes into a fireball on takeoff, but fate hasn't finished with these lucky few and, one by one, death claims them. Wong brings such a funereal tone to these early scenes of survivor's guilt and inevitable doom that the already far-fetched film threatens to veer into unplanned absurdity. Thankfully, the tale loosens up with a playful morgue humor: one of the victims winds up the splattered punch line to a grim joke and elaborate Rube Goldbergesque chains of cause and effect become inspired spectacles of destruction. Final Destination is a pretty silly thriller when it takes itself seriously, and the filmmakers play fast and loose with their own rules of fate, but once they stick their tongues firmly in cheek, the film takes off with a screwy interpretation of the domino effect of doom. --Sean Axmaker

3 out of 5 stars 3.5. solid atmosphere but has its issues.......2007-04-15

Like music "scenes"; from hair metal to grunge to nu-metal to garage rock, films as well have their eras. 80's masked killers slashers (Halloween) to the 90's teen slashers (Scream) to the Japanese remakes (The Ring) to the current era which is the uber-gory films (Hostel). Final Destination plays with the teen slasher conventions a little bit (before they fell into the uber-gory camp with the sequels) but ultimately it still fits and despite some problematic script issues, it's still an effective horror film at times.

Alex Browning is a kid in a French class boarding Flight 180 en route to Paris. Just after takeoff, the plane's side rips off and it explodes. Of course it wasn't real as Alex just had a premonition and his erratic behavior and rantings of planes exploding is met with hostility from 5 of his classmates, his teacher and the staff and they're forced off the plane. Imagine everyone's shock when the plane actually indeed explodes in mid-air. But Death is mad as the all-powerful beings grand scheme of when people die was disrupted so he's hunting them one by one.

Main issue with the script is that the premise is intriguing but let's face it: it's still an oddball concept. Why would Death have flaws in its plan, even if we could see the signs? You'd think someone who has such a foresight and knowledge of fate wouldn't have things mess up easily. Alex almost becomes a gifted crime fighter with his know-how on how to beat death but it's a horror movie and it never makes sense. Plus he catches on incredibly quick to the idea that Death is playing hitman now that it seems kinda laughable he figured it out at all.

In a way, Final Destination reminds me of the first 2 Jurassic Parks while its sequels are like the third Jurassic installment: there's a sense of seriousness with this one and the Spielberg films whereas part 2 and 3 basically made it a thrill-ride and the gore almost becomes the reason to see it whereas this film was based on atmosphere and it does have a sense of foreboding. Now the very environment is threatening and anything can bring about someone's doom instead of a dude in a hockey mask.

Is it enjoyable? Sure. It's maybe not a great film through and through but as a horror film, it does its job well.

5 out of 5 stars GENIUS.......2007-03-21

TALK ABT RESPECT FOR A MOVIE. I GIVE THIS FILM TWO AMZING THUMBS UP! NOT ONLY FOR ORIGINALITY BUT FOR THE AMAZING SHOCK FACTOR..I MEAN THE BUS SCENE IS BY FAR ONE THE BEST SCENES IN HORROR FILM HISTORY. AND THERE HAVE BEEN MANY, NOT SO MUCH IN LAST 10 YRS, BUT STILL...YEAH! OH MY GOODNESS, JUST THINKING OF THAT SCENE ALONE BRINGS A TEAR OF PURE JOY TO MY EYE....TALK ABT SHOCK VALUE, UR JUST NOT EXPECTING IT. THERE WAS A WAVE OF SH** AND F**** AT THE MOVIE PREMIER. I CAN NOT SAY ENOUGH ABT JUST THAT ONE SCENE...BUT THE WHOLE MOVIE IS WORTH A WATCH...JUST THE FACT THAT BASICALLY UR WHOLE LIFE IS PART OF SOME F***** UP DESIGN, CREATED BY DEATH, LEADING UP TO UR EVENTUAL DEMISE, IS PRETTY MESSED UP. BUT TO ALSO KNOW THAT THERE IS NO ESCAPING IT, THAT EVENTUALLY DEATH WILL CATCH UP WITH YOU, JUST AMAZING...FROM START TO FINISH UR ENGAGED IN THIS WHEN, WHERE, AND HOW ARE THESE KIDS GOING TO DIE..A MUST SEE, OVER AND OVER AGAIN...

4 out of 5 stars Final Destination.......2007-02-07

A thriller that really makes you think about the "design" of things. Best horror I have seen, because it is based on things that could really happen, not about some crazed killer that keeps coming back from the dead.

5 out of 5 stars Final Destination!!!.......2006-12-04

I love all of the Final Destination movies, and own the first two (i'm planning to buy the third one soon). They are just great intresting gory films. There is no visible killer, and the killer doesn't stab you with a knife or decapitate you with an axe. Instead, there are normal accidents that could happen to you any day (most of the time). This is the least gory in the series, but it's still good.

The movie is about a high school senior, Alex (Devon Sawa), who is going on a class trip to Paris. As the plane is about to take off, Alex has a horrifying premonition of the plane exploding. When he wakes up, he throws a fit, and gets himself and six others thrown off the plane. As the seven people watch the plane leave, it explodes, just like in Alex's premonition. The six people that Alex saved were the quite heroine Clear (Ali Larter), the mean jacka$$ Carter (Kerr Smith), the dorky guy Billy (Sean William Scott), Alex's best bud Todd (Chad Donella), Carter's girlfriend Terri (Amanda Detmer), and their teacher Ms. Valerie Lewton (Kristen Cloke). Alex and Clear soon find out, with the help of William Bludworth (Tony Todd), that they cheated death. Soon the seven survivors are killed one by one in the exact order they would of died in the plane crash.

This movie was very creepy. It made me fear doing every day things. The acting is good and their are some good deaths. There's a body count of five. This is defintly not near as gory as parts 2 and 3 though. Infact, I would only classify one death as "gory" and two others as "violent". The first and last deaths aren't violent at all. But it's ok, I liked this movie just as it is. If you like this movie, I highly recomend the two sequels. I love both of them.

Overall, I recomend this to all horror fans. It is one of the few good horror movies made these days.

Final Destination 2 begins with a well-orchestrated multicar pileup on a freeway--a horrifying accident that turns out to be a premonition, as seen by a young woman (A.J. Cook) who saves herself and several other people by blocking a freeway on-ramp. Thus, as in the first Final Destination, a prescient vision disrupts the destined plans of death, and death goes to extreme lengths to correct matters. What makes Final Destination 2 entertaining is that the characters can only survive by learning to recognize the signs of impending doom--and the signs are basically the cinematic foreshadowing that moviemakers use to invoke suspense. This, combined with some elaborately complicated and gruesome deaths, fosters a ghoulish humor that's more entertaining than the smirky self-referentiality of Scream. Final Destination 2 doesn't aspire to be a great movie, but trash has its pleasures. Also featuring Ali Larter as the only survivor of the first movie. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars It's a'right.......2007-04-24

After forseeing a massive car wreck teenager Kimberly prevents the accident by blocking the cars from merging with her truck, causing Death to take revenge.

I enjoyed bits of the film. Not a big fan of teen scream films, but I thought Kimberly and the police officer character were entertaining and sympathetic characters. Also the scene at the dental office.... Yikes!

Overall, I'd give it a 3. I guess I've outgrown watching films where seeing characters die in various different ways is the primary theme. This film needed more suspense and plot to really entertain me.

4 out of 5 stars Oh what fun we have with so little.......2007-04-17

The first Final Destination (I always found the title clunky but oh well) was a memorable entry in the teen horror genre since it wasn't self-referential and kind of dumb as the others. It relied on atmosphere and tension for their scenes whereas Scream or Urban Legend seemed to lack balls in their scenes. Of course the inevitable sequel comes out and this time it's packed with what the first one avoided slightly: gore. Strange as it may sound, this is gore done right. Yeah it's dumb, campy and little redeeming value but somehow you're just entertained by the whole thing.

Taking place a year after the Flight 180 disaster from the first one, we now instead follow Kimberly en route to a vacation when she has a premonition of a brutal multiple-car pileup on the freeway and prevents another group of cars from going down the freeway. The pileup happens and the remaining survivors, along with Kimberly find out what the first group had to deal with: Death is mad people lived and he's back, but he's gotten a little bit more creative, and way more gruesome.

In the film after this, Wendy (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead) says "can you feel how vicious it was?" That pretty much sums up the approach this film and that one have with dispatching its characters. Unlike the first one which were more like freak accidents in a way, this almost seems like Death playing Mousetrap with that knocking over this which turns off that and makes this do that until splat, something happens. It's silly but for some reason, it's dementedly fun. You find it strange that you're getting such a kick out of seeing a guy "Cube"d to death (it's a movie, check it out). The opening sequence with the massive pileup is probably one of the most tension-filled and exciting car crash scenes in recent memory, not to mention it's quite gory. But it's presented in a way that you'll turn very paranoid whenever a big trucker is on the road with you.

Is the acting any better? Well, no. The leads are usually the more better but nowhere near great acting. AJ Cook though does an admirable job as Kimberly and proves a good successor to the vision seer role Devon Sawa had in the first one. The rest? Very cookie cutter. The stoner to the impatient bi*ch with things to do to the brash, insensitive man, it's obvious they're just meant to be fodder for Death's viciousness. Returning is Clear Rivers (played by Ali Larter) who helps out Kimberly and her situation. She doesn't really make the film any better but can't go wrong with an additional hottie.

For those looking for a simple fun horror movie rather than a serious horror movie pretending it's fun, can't go wrong with this entire series. Yeah, FD2 is filled with a bunch of nonsense but where else can you get a kick out of this stuff for a change?

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as it could have been.......2007-02-07

After the great success of the first Final Destination movie, the follow up was inevitable, and I suppose so was the third film in due course. Having seen them all I would say that Final Destination 2 is definitely the weakest.

The story sees a young girl called Kimberley have a premonition in which a motorway pile up kills dozens of people including her and her friends. When she wakes up she avoids the disaster along with a few other cars full of people that she stops from driving into the path of the accident. Of course the result is that once again, the spirit of Death stalks all the survivors to ensure no-one escapes.

The car crash that starts the film is pretty excitingly filmed although a road accident does not have quite the same white-knuckle factor as an aeroplane disaster. But what really drags the film down is the introduction of the Clear Rivers character who was a survivor of the first movie. Coming across as a broody, death obsessed know-it-all, Clear Rivers becomes the oracle to which all the cast turn for an explanation of what is happening and how they can fight it. Between the obligatory death scenes, the characters start to unravel the REALLY clumsy formula behind who's turn it is to die next and who might ultimately survive. It must have been an attempt to out-do the first film by introducing a new mythology behind Death's ultimate plan, but it doesn't help the film at all. The other annoying thing is that Kimberley keeps on having more visions before each death and tries to use this power to save their lives but can't really do it very efficiently, and this falls kind of flat too as a plot device because it really goes nowhere - Kimberley's having psychic powers is not investigated in the script and the manifestation of them is very throwaway.

What still works reasonably well are the surprise deaths although some of them are rather disappointing. The settings still work as toe-curlers, such as putting the potential victims in the dentists chair, in a hazardous dirty kitchen, or in an elevator, but eventually the spark of the film just sinks under the weight of it's confusing attempts to create a logical pattern for the deaths, and the ponderous revelations (usually delivered by the all-knowing and annoyingly smug Clear Rivers) sound too ridiculous. What also doesn't work is that the survivors handle each death as it comes along with such casualness - it's all me, me, me with no appearance of shock or regret about the loss of other people's lives. And being such a callous bunch does not endear them to the audience!

So I ended up feeling kind of let down. The crash is pretty good, but all the waffle is a turn off and it punctures the suspense. The use of a survivor from the first film might have worked if they had got Devon Sawa back as Alex, but this character has conveniently died (and implausibly too - wait until you hear how!) in between the two films. Mind you any sequel that brings back previous cast members is a sure sign of covering up for shortcomings in the film itself.

The third film in the series drops the link to any previous characters and does a far better job of entertaining by reverting to a much more straightforward format.

5 out of 5 stars Unique Movie!.......2007-02-04

In the first Final Destination a young man has a vision about an airplane crashing on takeoff. He and a number of his friends get off the jet and survive the crash. After surviving the crash they begin dying one by one.The character played by Ali Larter is the only survivor. She has
been institutionized and has escaped her appointment with death. In the second movies Kimberly(played by A.J. Cook blocks an on ramp going on to the freeway. She does this after experiencing a vision of a huge crash and pileup that could take many lives. The crash happens but everyone that Kimberly has blocked off is spared.Death is denied because of Kimberly.
The people who have been spared start dying.Kimberly goes to the mental institution and consult the character played by Ali Larter. All of the
surviving people of the crash meet. They start learning the signs to be aware of to avoid death.Still death continues to call upon the group.
Following the course of the movie this movie has an unbelievable ending.
This is one of the most unique and original movies that I have seen in quite some time. When you watch it don't leave. You may miss something.

Giddily gruesome and perversely entertaining, Final Destination 3 proves, yet again, that horror franchises will thrive as long as teenagers keep finding spectacular ways to die. A stand-alone sequel to the first two Final Destination thrillers, this one begins when a group of seven high-school graduates luckily escape from a deadly roller-coaster disaster, only to discover that their own deaths have been only temporarily avoided. Cute brunette Wendy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) spots clues of impending doom in digital photos of her soon-to-be-expiring classmates, and an ill wind follows her everywhere, suggesting the presence of a supernatural force that makes her a catalyst for gory events, as each of her friends is dispatched in the order they were meant to die. Returning to give their brainchild a suspenseful, low-budget makeover, franchise creators and former X-Files writers James Wong and Glen Morgan cleverly play on our collective fears (the roller coaster sequence is genuinely terrifying) with a knowing nod to violent urban legends, which explains their inclusion of the '70s hit "Love Roller Coaster" on the soundtrack when two stuck-up girlfriends pay an ill-fated visit to a tanning parlor. And that's just for starters: With Wong as director, FD3 serves up its grisly deaths with tight pacing and humor, and the cathartic carnage is discreetly edited yet gory enough to satisfy hardcore horror buffs. When morbid mayhem is this much fun, it's a safe bet that another sequel is just around the corner. --Jeff Shannon

On the DVD
As befits a horror franchise heavily invested in the idea of "fate," the Final Destination 3 disc carries a "Choose Their Fate" option. In other words, you can watch the movie with occasional choices offered; click on one of two alternatives, and see that version play out. This won't give you the power to let one character live or die; it's more like deciding whether somebody honks her horn twice in a scene, calls heads or tails on a coin flip, or pushes the thermostat to 72 degrees or 76. Not exactly life-changing, but it's kind of fun.

The bonus disc includes a 90-minute "making of" feature called Kill Shot, which covers the production of the movie in exhausting detail (honest detail, too: filmmakers James Wong and Glen Morgan are funny and blunt about the business they're in, including a section on how the original ending was scrapped in favor of a bloodier finale). It's everything you'd want to know about this movie--but who needs to know this much? A 7-minute cartoon, "It's All Around You," is an amusing meditation on bad luck and laws of probability, while a 25-minute featurette called Dead Teenager Movie spins off from Roger Ebert's theory about the rigid formula of a certain kind of horror film (Ebert weighs in on the subject himself). A few experts opine on the traditions of teenagers dying in horror films; some of them don't seem to be aware that the formula pre-dated the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Audio commentaries, special effects sidebars, and trailers fill out this needlessly authoritative disc. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars End of the Line.......2007-05-20

The third part of the Final Destination trilogy does us all a favor and thankfully brings part one director James Wong into the fray. As before the premonition is intricate, violent, gory and foreshadowed so much that it's almost cheesy (but it pulls back just in time).

After watching the first two (which I love to death), I was skeptical about a third, thinking the creators were just milking the concept of "Death can't be avoided, no matter how hard you try". But, one day in the store, I picked up and bought it (with much head shaking and tongue wagging at myself, let me tell you). I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was (so surprised I freaked myself out and stayed up all night). The rollercoaster scene is wonderfully gruesome and Mary Elizabeth Winstead pulls off a convincing job of Wendy. The deaths were horrifying and gross (most namely the tanning beds and, my favorite, the nail gun) but really original.

The third Final Destination is so good that, in a way, it could make one paranoid about people screaming that they've seen the future...and you're all gonna die.

5 out of 5 stars Final Destination Strike 3!!!!.......2007-05-19

My mom rented this movie from Netflix I liked this movie my mom told me that she thought that Final Destination3 was OK.She told me she likes 2 Final Destination movies better. The death that I like most in the movie when those 2 girls name Ashley & Ashlyn was in the Tanning Bed 7 when Lewis was in the weight training room.Mary Elizabeth Winstead & Ryan Merriman gave their Great Performance in this 3rd Sequel in Final Destination!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Final Destination 3 (Full Screen 2-Disc Special Edition).......2007-05-13

Definant must have for the thrill gore seeking crowd, Faithfull to the Final Destination Style, ties the movies together fantastically without loosing any of its own to the first two movies.

5 out of 5 stars Just as good as the first two 'Destination' movies.......2007-04-24

A group of seniors on their high school graduation trip are at an amusement park, when Wendy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has a premonition about the Devil Roller Coaster. She becomes so upset that seven of the seniors leave the ride, and of course, the premonition of disaster comes true. Her boyfriend dies in the crash, but Kevin (Ryan Merriman) his best friend lives. Kevin has done his research, and finds an "urban legend" about a similar occurrence on Flight 180 years ago (a tricky reference to Final Destination #1), warning Wendy that the seven survivors are in danger.

At first Wendy disbelieves Kevin, but as after two survivors die in a tanning bed mishap (I loved this scene, especially the fact that they were listening to "Roller Coaster Of Love" while they died), Wendy looks again at the photos taken the night of the crash and decides that the rest of the kids need to be warned.

The 'Final Destination' movies are simple, flash-in-the-pan horror flicks with a bunch of teenagers and a bunch of grisly deaths. This third installment holds true to the format and won't disappoint fans of the first two movies. Head "poppers" seem to be a favorite of the death scenes. A special mention goes to actor Kris Lemche as Ian McKinley, my favorite character.

One thing Part Three has that the other two didn't is a special interactive feature on the DVD called "Choose Their Fate", which is fun. I recommend watching the theatrical version first, then have some fun with the "Choices". The choices don't have much to do with the outcome, but lead to different scenes, and besides, its fun to interact. Some lengthen and some shorten the theatrical version. You can also back up the scene and pick differently if you choose.

'Final Destination 3' is a solid addition to the first two movies, if you like teenage horror flicks. Definitely worth a purchase. Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Teen horror flick..........2007-04-14

This is a teen scream film about a group of teenagers saved from death due to the precognitive talents of one of their number, only to have Death call in his chips. To my surprise I actually kind of liked it. It has an interesting premise: what would happen if death itself wanted you dead? Overall I was amused. It's not rocket science but it was fun.

Negatives: I could've done without the t&a scene at the tanning parlor, but I'm sure the men loved it. The DVD also has a feature which allows you to 'choose the fate' of the characters at certain points. I tried it, but was 'meh' about it. I thought there would be actual film footage- instead, there is sort of an epilog which tells you 'what happened next...' to the characters. After the first one I didn't bother to try the others.

I particularly liked the ending. Three stars. Average, but gory horror fun.

The movie is so scary. If you don't want to be scared out of your wits this is not for you. The special effects are terrific. Can't wait for the next one?

5 out of 5 stars Great product!.......2006-11-21

Well, we had already watched all the movies separately but we decided to purchase the trilogy for our nephew as a birthday gift since he loves this kind of horror/terror/thriller movies.

I'd classify Final Destination more like a thriller than horror, and it is not those silly and disgusting horror movies like See no Evil or Saw...

I do believe if you watch number one and like it (I bet you will) you more than likely would be the kind of viewer who would love to have the trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars Love these movies! Best scenes I've seen in movies in a long time!.......2006-11-03

The Final Destination Thrill-Ogy is exactly what I expected! I saw all 3 movies and knew when this 3-pack came out that I would be purchasing it. The movies are full of suspense and heart-pounding scenes that you'll have to rewind to believe again and again. Great set of movies for those who enjoy these type of movies. Great buy!

5 out of 5 stars Great series, great movies!!!.......2006-07-21

this is one of the best horror series that i like. i normally just stick with the old scream series (courtney cox) and i know what you did last summer (jennifer love hewitt) but i decided to try this out. plus it was on sale for ten dollars so i decided to buy it. it turns out that i loved the movies im only mad because they can't keep with the same cast for each movie. i can't wait till the third comes out on dvd.

5 out of 5 stars three was better.......2006-04-16

this box set is GREAT they are classic
#1 and 2 were great
MUST HAVE for the horror genre so go and pick it up

5 out of 5 stars a good choice.......2006-03-26

two greats movie for a good price, i recomend this two movies

5 out of 5 stars I Love These Movies.......2006-02-13

They are both really good but I liked the second one best. I would love to go see the 3rd but I will have to wait til it comes out on dvd so my mom can scan over it before I watch it. I bet the 3rd one will be better than the first and second because of the roller coaster death. My dog agrees with me that the FD3 will be better. He likes scary movies just like me.

5 out of 5 stars I found the ticket..........2006-02-09

Hey, the ticket is in the first movie, It looks like a mailer of some kind but if you look closer it is actually the free ticket you are looking for. I hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars ONLY SEASONS 1 & 4 ARE WORTH BUYING........2004-06-06

"Destination Dark" is season 4. Buy it.

Season 1 was a brilliant introduction to the aliens and the human resistance. Season 4 provided the conclusion. The other seasons were "lost" and directionless...boring. Buy 1 & 4, enjoy the story about the Taelons, and then stop there.

4 out of 5 stars No ENglish subtitle.......2004-01-19

How can there is not even an English subtitle? Though it doesn't quite stand in the way of my understanding, it still almost drove me mad while I was watching. Many of my friends, who are also hot EFC fans, withdrew their decision of buying it when they knew there wasn't a subtitle. Not everyone's(I mean people from non-English speaking countries like me)English is good enough to understand the show without any means of assistance.

5 out of 5 stars Destination Darkness Season: 4.......2004-01-04

The Fourth Season sees a lot of changes in the show. We see the departure of show regular, Augur. Replacing him as the resident genius is J. Street. The conclusion of the season also sees the "Final Conflict" of the Taelon and Jaridian races and opens the way for the arrival of the Atavus race in Season 5. Complete with lots of pictures and extras, this DVD box set is a must for any fan of the show. Beware, allocate plenty of time to watch the whole 6 DVD set! This season ROCKS!!

      Description

The invention of the railway provided the world with its first method of quick and effective transportation of people and their products. The train however has proven to be just as unreliable as any other man-made mechanism, delivering death and destruction along with its cargo. The Naples Black Market Express: On the night of March 2, 1944, a trainload of 521 people enroute to Naples, Italy, died in one of the eeriest train disasters of all time. Brought to a halt by icy rails in a narrow two-mile long tunnel, it is assumed that carbon monoxide gas produced by the labouring engine overcame the passengers as they sat in their seats. The Minaki Train: On September 1, 1947, the "Minaki Special", an outdated wooden passenger train collided with the all-steel "Transcontinental", melding the two engines together and igniting gas oil lamps throughout the Minaki's wooden cars. Over 30 perish in the resulting fire amongst the train's splintered remains.
