Deservedly hailed as one of the best films of 2001, Wit makes it clear why top-ranking talents seek refuge in the quality programming of HBO. Unhindered by box-office pressures, director Mike Nichols and Emma Thompson turn the most unglamorous topic--the physical and psychological ravages of cancer--into an exquisite contemplation of life, learning, and tenacious, richly expressed humanity. In adapting Margaret Edson's compassionate, Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Nichols and Thompson open up the one-room setting with a superb supporting cast. But their focus remains on the hospital experience of Vivian (Thompson), a fiercely demanding professor of English literature whose academic specialty--the metaphysical poetry of John Donne--is the armor she wears against the cruel indignities of her cancer treatment. While losing all that she held dear, she reassesses her life as an aloof intellectual, and Wit illuminates her bracingly eloquent and deeply moving struggle for dignity, meaning, and peace at life's ultimate crossroads. --Jeff Shannon

British comedian Eddie Izzard wears makeup, platform heels, and a shimmering magenta suit in Glorious, a video of his standup act filmed in England. Izzard takes a little bit of Robin Williams, a little bit of Jerry Seinfeld, even a little bit of Bob Newhart, but the final mix is absolutely his own and dizzily funny. It's not so much the subjects of his humor--though not many comics make jokes about classical mythology or evil giraffes--as it is the way he fluidly skips from thing to thing in a madcap free-associative whirl. He lulls you by seeming casual and almost sloppy, but when he needs to be precise his gestures and mimicry are razor sharp. There have been a million tired jokes made about trying to get a shower to stay at the right temperature, but Izzard manages to make even that funny. He's even funnier when he's imitating Sean Connery as Noah, trying to convince God that a speedboat would make a much better photo opportunity than an ark, or playing a beekeeper flirting with someone passing on the street. Much of the giddiness comes from his astounding sense of spontaneity. Half the show seems to have been made up on the spot, and if it wasn't, you boggle wondering how he could have possibly written something so ridiculous and yet appropriate. Though he uses a number of four-letter words, his humor is surprisingly clean, and even the most frank vulgarities seems like a bit of impish innocence coming out his mouth. Glorious indeed. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars On the first day God created jam, radiators, Belgium, and Eddie Izzard........2007-07-04

While "Dress to Kill" is the definitive Eddie Izzard DVD (the "Cake or Death?" routine on that disc is probably the greatest single comedy bit of the last two decades), "Glorious" suffers only in comparison. Measured by any other standard, it's flat-out hilarious, period. The combination of Izzard's razor-sharp wit, offhand delivery, fluid stage movements and decidedly singular appearance makes for hilarious comedy that only those who have seen him in action can fully imagine. (Every Izzard performance contains throwaway bits that you'll cherish forever; in "Glorious," my favorite is his impression of an evil giraffe.) Only Robin Williams matches Izzard's free-associative brilliance, and I prefer Izzard's style because, unlike Williams, he doesn't feel the need to call attention to it every second. Amazon offers a price break on "Dress to Kill" and "Glorious" ordered together; if you don't have both discs already, it's a deal I highly recommend. The world could do with more "executive transvestites" like Eddie Izzard!

5 out of 5 stars The best comedian in the world.......2007-06-28

I think Eddie Izzard it simply the best stand up comedian in the world.
His humor is very intelligent. He looks at things from a different perspective and points out the obvious, that is not obvious if you don't think about it, which makes it very funny. The fraises from his shows became an essential part of my family's vocabulary. "Glorious" and "Dress to Kill" are his two best shows. I think we saw each DVD at least 10 times.

3 out of 5 stars Glorious? Not so much.......2007-06-01

Not as good as Dressed To Kill. There are truly funny bits scattered throughout, but you have to wade through the not so funny stuff to get to them.

5 out of 5 stars Another Izzard classic..........2007-05-15

Silly, witty, and razor sharp, Eddie Izzard strikes again with another instant classic... guaranteed laughs...

4 out of 5 stars It's Eddie, but not at his best........2007-03-24

I was first exposed to Eddie Izzard in the "Dress to Kill" show and I immediately fell in love. His blend of the silly, the cerebral, and the stick that slaps is perfect for fans like me. I went out and bought the DVD and have enjoyed it thoroughly for 3 years.
Recently, though, I've been looking for more of his work and after reading a bunch of reviews right here I decided to spring for "Glorious." Before I say anything else let me just say that I am NOT disappointed. I got several big belly laughs from this show and I think that just about anyone else would, too.
That said, I have to admit that I don't believe this is his best work. I say this primarily for the fact that he seems less energetic in "Glorious." If you know Mr. Izzard, then you know that he's never really 'slow', he's always got some enthusiasm in his shows but to me it just seemed like this one had less of it. The topics covered in this show aren't quite as diverse as those covered in "Dress" either, and I feel that he overdoes the James Mason voice, but all in all these are not good enough reasons to skip "Glorious" altogether. It's a good show and it's got plenty of everything that makes him great.
My suggestion would be for newer fans of Eddie Izzard to hold off on this one until they've seen "Unrepeatable" (which in my opinion is the closest to "Dress") and possibly "The Definite Article", both of which show a more energetic star. Just remember that it's Eddie Izzard so you can't really go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars 2nd best Eddie Izzard DVD, BEST stand-up comedy ever!.......2007-06-29

I must preface this rave review by saying that if you don't like British comedy, are uncomfortable with transvestites, or have no patience for intelligent humor, you DON'T want to buy this. That said, BUY THIS DVD! One of his best performances, this installment of Eddie Izzard reinforces what I and his thousands of loyal fans already knew: he is by far one of the most talented comedians of the past 2 decades, and not a shabby actor either! (See Shadow of the Vampire for more info.) His comedy spans every imaginable topic - the NRA, the creation of the world, Queen Elizabeth,

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the funniest Eddie ever!!!.......2007-06-23

I've been a fan of Eddie Izzard's bizzarely off-the-wall humour since his appearences in BBC's Have I got News for You. Dress to Kill was the first time I'd seen him do stand-up though and it blew me away.

Of course, I then had to obtain his other works; Glorious, Circle and so on. Definite Article was the last DVD of his I purchased, and boy did I save the best until last!

Knowing this was shot in 1996 I was concerned about the performance, production values and content. I needn't have been - this is Eddie at his finest. The theatre was stunning and the set was very apt, with a massive book opening revealing the man himself on a huge chair atop a staircase. Of course, after the applause dies down what you get is pure Izzard, with non-sequiturs, mumbling, laughing at his own silliness, and topics and themes are juggled haphazardly with some trailing off, others returning later in the set to kick you where it hurts. And since Eddie isn't really a topical comedian it stays the test of time, with only his bit on pausing VCRs reminding you the video you're watching is not quite as contemporary as it appears.

Clearly having fun, Izzard let's his ad-lib skills run free. And every topic is a gem, every bit is wonderful. The bit on James Bond had me literally in tears and I had to pause the DVD and regain my composure. I still laugh about this DVD days after viewing it.

So if you haven't added this one to your collection yet do so! You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Izzard Rocks.......2007-04-21

Eddie Izzard has to be just about the best comic around. My upper division English teacher in college showed us some of "Dress to Kill," and the class was cracking up. I watch everything of his I can get my hands on.

5 out of 5 stars Once Again... We Worship The "Mad Skills" of a Brilliant Comedian!.......2007-02-16

Izzard is the greatest comedian in the world! His performances are always employing his vast array of expressions, movements, and pitch. He has perfect comedic timing and I am shocked that he is not more famous than he already is! He's certainly better than any American comic I can think of.
He is so wonderfully talented and hilarious.
The best way to spend time.
I sometimes find myself going on Eddie withdrawal.
EPIC!
Eddie steals our hearts and laughter!
Go buy it now! ^.^

5 out of 5 stars Soberingly beautiful.......2007-05-30

An oustanding film. It really affected me. I adore Donne's poetry and the film gave me a glimpse of some of the things Donne must have wrestled with when wrote Holy Sonnet 10 (Death be not Proud) the poem which Vivian Bearing narrates as the film closes. Watch it, if only for it's sobering insights into our own mortality and the need we all have for a human connection.

5 out of 5 stars all i ever really needed to learn, was in children's literature about rabbits.......2007-04-09

all we ever really needed to learn was written in the children's books we read when we were young.

soporific
making you sleepy. as in, this movie is not soporific but rather is stimulating and tearful.

The movie is bracketed chronologically by two events.
The first, is when she decides to love words, to revel in them, to be constantly surprised by them.
As a young girl reading a child's book about rabbits, her father teaches her the word-soporific.

And the touching moment, shortly before her death, where her literature PhD mentor reads another children's book about rabbits. (i was disappointed when she didn't leave the book on the table as she left) The old prof knew the meaning of the words, for she offers to recite Donne but wisely ends up reading about rabbits, running from God, and transmogrification.

The movie has many levels to instruct us. but i'm interested in the one about words, their meanings and how we share those meanings with those around us.
For she learns, well, the lessons of literature. she knows all the right words about the metaphysical poetry of John Donne ( i spent more time online reading Donne, then the length of the movie, having stopped it everytime she quotes him and reading the whole work) but she really doesn't know the meaning until she dies by inches as an experimental research patient for a chemotherapy for metastised ovarian cancer.

She knew the word-soporific from childhood, but it took the humiliating experience in the hospital to teach her what restful, dreamless, needful sleep was.
she knew what it meant to be a difficult and demanding professor, but her course was described as less poetical than biochemistry as the young really bright doctor inserts a cathater. She learns, a teaches us, in part, the difference between knowing the meaning of a word and experiencing the word in your soul.

Ever the teacher and prof to the end, her monologues directed to the watcher, share what she is learning as she is dying. Sharing her humiliation, her powerlessness, her vulnerability, by stages, the move slowly pulls you into her dying and involves you as her life never involved anyone. For she lived and died, really alone, only the one visit from her mentor in more than 8 months. But she recited her poetry, she quotes Donne through the pain and the haze of the medication, and she really learns the meaning of his words about death and dying and commas.

Commas, pause, just a small breath. Just a short life. It starts with a flashback scene with her mentor and her as a young bright (lots of bright alienated people, actually everyone but the nurse is, bright and not very human, not very caring, not sympathetic to the travails around them, many of which they cause) and a discussion of a comma. The point is that words and punctuation matter, but what matters more is the meaning, the significance, how things really fits together after all the mediocre is burned away. And that is the great strength of this movie, the details (i left all the lights on) that we use to fill our lives to overflowing, to soporific ourselves from others and from our own souls, is stripped away, like her hair, her dignity in a rough pelvic exam, and in death as her breasts are exposed and people fight over the meaning of DNR(not even a word but merely an acronym, a collection of letters, not even dignified with a vowel so that people pronounce it rather than just list the letters).

Emma T. is simply wonderful, she captures the part, and drives the pathos home with just a single tear, or an infectious laugh, or a feeble tug to cover herself. the power and intensity of the movie owes much to her abilities, as much as the movie pulls you into her world and her last days of thought, it also ought to ask questions not only about the matter and indignity of her death, but more about how such a bright, hard working women missed so much of the meaning of Donne.

Mechanism, clockwork instruments, literature as analysis of technic or words as sounds. What is missing is the deeper, more human, more soulish, more spirit level. Her mentor got it, maybe it can just come with age. Which reminds me that we really live our lives backwards. We ought to start out old and infirmed and dependent and get younger and more vigorous with time. Youth is wasted on the young, they don't get it, and when some of them do, it is often too late to do anything about the direction of your life. But like WIT said, he was so young, so immature, it was no wonder that he didn't understand. But those few geniuses, those who tower above our common lot, like Donne, ought to have such a place of honor in our society that young people do hear what they had to say. But as a prof, Emma T's character, despite the intensity and accuracy of her classes, did not challenge the spiritual condition of her students, any more than Donne challenged her own spiritual journey. Like the doctors who "treated" her, she was a technican, only with words rather than with drugs or a scapel, but the effect is the same, both on the doer and the one done to--impersonalization, technic raised high above goals, lostness and concentration on the little things, inhumanity and neglect of the spiritual dimension. In this way, she was just like them, just in a different field. she treated her student's pretty much like the doctors treated her, one more step to the next paper, another paycheck, another acronymn after your name. This is the real shame of the movie, a culture of instrumentality, of means, subplants and substitutes it's own goals for human goals of development and beings and understanding. Not just in the hospital, but in the university and by extension everywhere.

I like to think that this is the big picture of the movie, something we all ought to get, and sooner than our last days.
Perhaps reading more John Donne will help, as long as we don't concentrate on the sounds of words, but on the meaning and what he really wanted us to hear and take to heart.

"O death, where is your sting? O grave, where is your victory?"

"No man is an island. entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. "

I am a nursing student and we watched this movie in class immediately after class I went online and purchased it. This is a must see for anyone working in the health care field! It gives meaning to dignity, integrity, service, and most of all compassion as it relates to the health care industry. I was very moved by this as was the rest of my classmates. Share this with others!!!

Tragic and comic at the same time. This is an unforgettable film which I have viewed several times. Emma Thompson is at her superb best, and the rest of the cast are likewise superb. Unfortunately, there is no Region 2 version of this DVD; however, I overcame this difficulty.

According to the UK national daily The Independent: "If all the awards and nominations have gone to his head, Izzard's performance does not show it. When he pulls up in mid-flow there is the same sense you get with Robin Williams sometimes, of the audience racing to catch up with a mind that moves too quickly for them." 5 out of 5 stars The best Izzard out there.......2006-11-07

I admit, the audio on this DvD is of low quality, but if all you are doing is watching it there shoulden't be a problem hearing what Izzard is saying. Before I saw this I would have said that Dressed to Kill or Glorious was the mans best show but this one takes that cake. The dog fetching the stick part had me laughing so hard my step-father came in my room to ask if I was ok, and I have never had him do that before over anything. If possible I would have given this a 10/5!

3 out of 5 stars Very funny.......2006-08-31

If doesn't come close to Dressed to Kill, but since I hadn't watched that one for at least a year, Unrepeatable was very funny. We enjoyed Eddie's wonderful sense of humor as always.

5 out of 5 stars Eddie is just all right with me . . ........2006-08-09

I've tried to explain Eddie Izzard to people who haven't seen him, and there's just no way you can capture that particular mix of smarts, physical humor, and witty junctures, while mixing in his image as an out transvestite. What an original. It's no wonder he is huge with his fans.

I've seen later shows and probably laughed louder, but this West End performance from earlier in his career, 1994, does not disappoint. Made from a single performance (rather than assembled from the best parts of several), there are moments that don't quite work, but given Izzard's style of delivery, these are even comic and you wouldn't want to miss them.

Often compared to the brilliance of Robin Williams, Izzard is all himself and nobody else. This particular DVD actually has a commentary of Izzard talking about his own performance (recorded about 10 years later) and a silly "trivia commentary" with odd facts about the subject matter he is discussing, e.g., that in Holland it is illegal to shop in a grocery store without a cart? (That can't be true. . .)

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-07-31

Product Description

"What It Takes" is the documentary starring four elite Ironman triathletes - Peter Reid, Heather Fuhr, Lori Bowden, and Luke Bell - who together have won 6 world championships and dozens of major races. Viewers go behind the scenes in the quest for the 2005 world championship in Kona, Hawaii. Running at 96 minutes long, the movie includes footage of the athletes training, racing, and resting, and also opening up in extensive interviews to share their thoughts and feelings. The audience learns much about the sport of triathlon and the duel for athletic supremacy, but also about the very human issues which confront four athletes in an up-and-down, unpredictable year. The movie goes significantly beyond anything offered in sports cinema previously. It was shot at 24 frames per second on a Panasonic SDX-900, and is presented in 16:9 widescreen format. Its rich cinematic feel and sweeping visual imagery from places around the globe - including Australia, Canada, Dubai, and numerous locations in the United States, including Hawaii - combine with compelling storylines to produce a story about four athletes, four human beings, and one dream, the Ironman world championship.

No matter what stage of a triathlete you are, this is great! Sit down with some of your tri buddies, grab some granola and water and enjoy!! The four featured athletes share their lives for one year as they prepare for the World championships in Hawaii. Their failures, successess, strengths and weaknesses only add to your training and motivation to get on the course and do you best. As a side note, I have to say Peter Reid is one interesting fellow!! When you watch, you'll get it!

4 out of 5 stars A group hug for Peter.......2006-12-06

I wonder in years to come what Peter Reid will make of this period in his life?

Hopefully it will mark the beginning of the end of his search to love and be loved. Clearly the timing of the filming was unfortunate as he was just going through a divorce and it may not have effected him athletically, although many will say it did, I hope that he isn't normally like this.

The film is an intimate look at his life and the day to day existence of Peter and three other athletes. Watching this with a group of triathletes was much better than watching it alone. It's a great testiment to the effort they put in, and this was a great film to see what it takes.

I hope retirement is treating you well Peter!

4 out of 5 stars Follow the everyday life of Peter Reid.......2006-11-23

A great documentary about the life's of 4 triathletes, mostly about Peter Reid.
If your looking for training info this is NOT it!
It's a nice inside in the way these athletes life there everyday life's and the problems they encounter.

The two-part OVA Puni Puni Poemy retains the tone but not the plot of the 2000 series Excel Saga. The only returning character is Nabeshin, the caricature of director Shinichi Watanabe. Poemi Watanabe has two missions: to become a voice actress and to save the Earth. When evil aliens who have tether balls dangling from their crotches kill her parents, she moves in with the nutty Aasu sisters, who command useless superpowers. As in Excel Saga, there are some funny parodies: an old fish becomes the bejeweled sword Poemi uses when she transforms into her super-guise of Puni Puni Poemi, and adoring Futaba Aasu spoofs Tomoyo in Cardcaptor Sakura. Unfortunately everything is pitched at a breakneck pace, with the actors hysterically screaming their lines over "fan service" nudie shots. The results are more exhausting than amusing. (Rated 17 and older: nudity, violence, gross humor, profanity) --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars its like like excel saga never ended.......2007-07-05

this movie is a 2 episode series very similar to excel saga, only this spoofs the "group of girls bateling for the safety of the planet" theme of so many anime series'. it also has alot of shock value humor (similar to the "Final Episode" of excel) and has very random, rapid content that leaves you descovering more things each time you watch it

if you liked excel saga, or flcl (fooly cooly) then this is defiantely worth seeing.

5 out of 5 stars oh fuutaba!!!!.......2007-05-22

first this anime is not for those who are easily offended by porn, laungage, violence or disturbingly wrong situations involving little girls. NO THIS IS NOT HENTAI THOUGH IT COULD BE.SO PARENTS DON'T WORRY IF YOUR BUYING PORN OR NOT. this is some funny funny stuff. random hilarious things and it's by the excel saga guys. if u want an idea of what it's like buy excel saga disc 1 or the box set and watch the trailer.

4 out of 5 stars Excel Saga scraps? -or- Pure junk? -or- Harmless fun?.......2006-08-10

I really couldn't tell with this anime series. The begining of the anime series -or (the first few minutes) really didn't grab my attention because it was god awful boring and not even funny. Then later on in the first episode, it was sitting on three words to describe it..pure funny junk. Some parts in the first episode had a few laughs but then the laughs die down and you are just looking in shock and saying what the hell just happened but for me it was enough to keep watching on to the second episode. The second episode can only be describe as 'ecchi' and wasn't it almost to be considered 'hentai'. Well anyway...the second episode was annoying ecchi junk...maybe that's the only words I can describe it. Very few laughs just alot of ecchi junk that could give an animated teenage boy a nosebleed for hours but for this series I can't stop watching. Overrall I am kinda indifferent on it. I wouldn't say it's worth the money or it's not worth the money. So just stuck. Just go on Youtube and watch the first episode of Puni Puni and see what you think about it.

1 out of 5 stars Hyper, Crazy, Junk.......2006-04-23

Shinichi Watanabe, the same director from the comedy anime named, Excel worked on this project and tried to re-create the crazy energy and humor into Puni Puni Poemi. Puni Poemi is a parody of other parody, so it is making fun of other animes that made fun of others. Though it sounds like a wishful paradox integrated into the storyline, the story itself is simplistic and really dumb. Poemi Wantanabi is a young girl like twelve years old who aspires to be a voice actor in the anime industry, but hasn't been offered the job. Poemi also transforms into a super hero and fights off an alien invasion which on taking over Earth. Poemi, is super hyper and super crazy; she talks super fast and does crazy things on screen like stabbing herself with pencils, screaming at the top of her lungs, laughing and crying sometimes at the same time, bouncing around the screen more than Daffy Duck. She's not the only crazy one though, other characters in the show are just as insane and the pacing will get you tired, there is barely a moment of peace in the two episode series. There are lots of weak jokes in attempt to create humor in which only come off as cheesy or perverted, there is some fan service but it is not very erotic, but instead is a parody of hentai anime. There is a constant [...] theme which seem out of place between all the female characters and even scenes that imply sexual activity between two underage girls. The storyline has no cohesive element so there is nothing to follow, the dialog is very stupid and nowhere near the humor of Excel Saga. Puni Puni Poemi is only two episodes long, there is some perversion in the episodes, so I cannot recommend it to anyone under 16 years of age. This was a waste of time and money. If you want comedy anime I recommend the "Excel Saga" and if you want fan service get "Agent Aika".

5 out of 5 stars The Rap on Ali Rap.......2007-03-09

It was superb from inside out. It simply is a must buy and I highly recommend it not only to boxing fans but all those who love a story with meaning.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-02-18

Ali's words float like a butterfly in this wonderful novel. If you admired Ali and his poetic style, this wonderful book is for you. Half of the book is pictures with corresponding Ali quotes on the opposite pages.

A fun read for anyone interested in Ali or his words.

5 out of 5 stars Ali Beat Them Before He Stepped In The Ring.......2007-01-23

Ali Rap is an awesome display of the mental side of Ali. He used rap and rhymes to put together CLASSIC interviews with various people, most notably, Howard Cossell. He had so much fun giving interviews and showing off in front of the camera, only to back up EXACTLY what he said, in the ring. I think that this video is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I was entertained by it!!

3 out of 5 stars Great subject.......2007-01-10

Not much more than the TV ads that sold it. Yet it was entertaining. Ali's talent as a quick witted persona is displayed as much as his poweress in the ring--both displayed well in Ali Rap. I'd like to recommend this especially for young people who start like off behind an 8 ball. Those who didn't know the glory of The Greatest need to. I'm yet honored to have lived during a time that I watch him happen--first in the ring and then in the world. He got a message through about being black, being human well being Ali that meant as much as any speech maker in history and reached those who needed it the most.

Description

First performed in 1777, Richard Brinsley Sheridan's sophisticated comedy of manners satirizes the extravagance and corruption of London society. The School for Scandal's combination of elegant language and earthy comedy weaves a deliciously nasty tale of intrigue, slander, and clandestine love affairs. Blair Brown stars in this timeless, witty look at the wages of scandal mongering and social climbing, scheming and hypocrisy. Stars Emmy®-nominees Blair Brown ("The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd") and Kenneth Welsh ("Twin Peaks") and Emmy®-winner Larry Gates (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof).

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Witty and worthy production.......2007-03-15

A crisp production negotiated with wit and flair, this delicious confection offers a tantilizing glimpse of the mores and manners of Sheridan's 18th century England. Guided with a sure hand by Michael Langham and Nick Havinga, this handsome production is well paced, wittily acted, and far worthier than the sneering commentary of the reviewers below would have you believe.

1 out of 5 stars As Bad a Production as Possible.......2006-02-15

This production took one of the wittiest, most sparkling 18th-century comedies--and ruined it. The costumes are intentionally absurd (think Beach Blanket Babylon), the acting is way over-the-top-camp, and the incidental music could not be worse. The music, BTW, is a combination of pop Renaissance and pop modern; anything but 18th century. The director appears to have had the goal of showing that his company was just too hip and too modern to do anything but make fun of this silly, fusty old play.

I like "The School for Scandal" very much, and not having found any other DVDs of it, I started out with the intention of keeping a recording of even a bad production. But when they got into the extended bop-be-bop of the drinking song scene, I knew I just couldn't ever sit through this one again.

The visuals are also blurry, but with the production being so bad, so what? Anyone who actually likes this play will be revolted by this DVD.

2 out of 5 stars three to four stars - depending..........2005-09-05

Classic drawing room comedy, period piece. Cleverly written in a time when the audience needed a bit of a nudge to figure out each character. Each person's name describes how you should feel about each! Charming idea from the 1700's. If you've never had a chance to see one of these comedies, take a look. This is a famous play and well done. Must see for theatre students.

    Description

Bishop Sheen's Irish heritage was evident in many of his television programs as he shared the wit and the wisdom he inherited from his Emerald Isle ancestors.

In "Psychology of the Irish," Bishop Sheen offers his thoughts on what makes a person Irish. Is it ethical? Environmental? Or wishful thinking on the part of those who are not Irish?

God has a sense of humor, at least in Bishop Sheen's mind, and he explores that sense of humor in "The Divine Sense of Humor,"

"Why Do People Laugh?" is Bishop Sheen's take on humor. And, judging from the sense of humor he displayed thoughout his lifetime and on his television programs, he was an expert on the subject. Three 30-minute programs on one DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection Of Players Makes For A Satisfying Light Comedy........2006-11-29

A winning mixture of slapstick with sentiment, this black and white Republic Pictures vehicle for talented bumpkin Judy Canova profits from the well-liked comedienne's vaudeville background, thereby evading sugary components that should have lessened the appeal of a work that additionally includes a very experienced cast and crew under the able direction of veteran Charles Lamont. Canova, playing as herself, is employed as charwoman and general maintenance worker at her aunt's hotel in "Greebville", striving to earn enough money to cover mortgage payments for her run-down "ranch" where she lives along with three orphaned youngsters and, as a means of forestalling boredom, Judy is also subscribing to a mail order course with the Continental Correspondence School, hoping therewith to find true love. After fibbing to her aunt and cousin that she has already found a beau, the fanciful "Poindexter March" who is coming while on military leave to visit her by bus, Judy is driven to the town's bus station where she desperately accosts a single man (Robert Lowery) and persuades him to pose as her swain, presenting a golden opportunity for him, because he is a confidence man, and her abrupt attachment to him enables "Poindexter" to shift into high gear with his crime partner for a swindle of the locals, eventually drawing out the greedy worst from Judy's relatives along with the small town's banker. The film, shot in the San Fernando Valley, is paced nicely, having nary a dull moment, and editing by Arthur Roberts is accomplished in crisp fashion. Considered a musical comedy, the work showcases Canova performing three numbers, including her well-known rendition of "Sleepy Serenade" and a newly composed novelty item, "I'm Awful Glad I Was Born On My Birthday", all lip synched here. The film's characters are more provincial than hayseed, and a well-written screenplay supplies interest within a viewer for each. Sprightly Canova is always enjoyable to watch in action, and she is ably backed here by a talented supporting cast of largely seasoned actors, Richard Deacon gaining performing honours for his astringently humourous turn as an avaricious bank official attempting to foreclose upon Judy's ranch for his personal financial benefit, while even the three children cared for by Canova play smoothly, closely coached by director Lamont.

3 out of 5 stars Judy Strikes Oil.......2006-11-04

A great Saturday Matinee movie. Judy Canova is always entertaining and gives a positive attitude to every situation. Her way of handling things always saves the day and you always want to stay in the theatre and see her movie over again. She's delightfully corn-pone and magical.

    4 out of 5 stars Typical 50s Comedy.......2005-04-28

I have not seen the DVD, so this review is from a VHS tape that was released some years ago. The star of this movie is Judy Canova, who had a radio show in the late 40s. In her radio show, Judy played a hillbilly who ended up in Hollywood - as such, that show was the predecessor to the Beverly Hillbillies. In Lay That Rifle Down, Judy owns a ranch and has taken in three orphans. She has trouble keeping up the mortgage payments and has to work at a hotel in the city to make ends meet. The bank manager is trying to foreclose on the ranch and the hotel owner drives Judy like a slave. On top of that, Judy is trying to find a man to marry and is using a correspondence course to look cultured to achieve this end. Being teased about the course and her attempts at improving her appearance, Judy lies and says she already has a boyfriend. Pressed with this, Judy gets a passenger just off the bus to pose as her boyfriend. This man takes to the role a bit too enthusiastically and it is revealed he is a con man taking advantage of a great opportunity to run a scam. How Judy deals with all this is what drives the story. The movie does wrap this up with a by today's standards contrived chase and the expected last laugh at the end. One of the funny moments in the film is seeing Judy's attempt at applying makeup per the instructions in the correspondence course. Other moments deal with an elevator that needs fixing (did they ever work like that?) and bringing hot water to the rooms (I guess the hotel had no running water in the rooms). The production and story are standard 50s fare. This is a nice family movie, with the unsophistication of the 50s.
