Tod Browning, who directed Bela Lugosi in the original Dracula, stepped into even eerier territory with this 1932 story of betrayal and retribution in the circus. Evil trapeze artist Olga Baclanova seduces and marries a midget in the circus sideshow, hoping to inherit his wealth. But in doing so, she has crossed the wrong folks: the tightly knit group of nature's aberrations, who stick together like family--and who set out to avenge their little pal. Browning brought in some of the most famous sideshow attractions of the era, include Siamese twins Daisy and Violet Hilton and Johnny Eck the Legless Boy, as well as Zip and Pip, microcephalics whose appearance in this film inspired cartoonist Bill Griffith to create his comic strip, "Zippy the Pinhead." So disturbing that it was banned for 30 years in Great Britain. --Marshall Fine

The comedy/drama Freaks and Geeks limped through its sole season on NBC in 1999 before being expelled by the network--but not before earning critical acclaim and a devoted fan base that fought valiantly to keep it on the air. Now all 18 episodes have been released in this long-awaited boxed set, which allows longtime fans and first-timers alike to enjoy one of television's most poignant and funny programs about high school.

Created by writer-comedian Paul Feig and executive produced by Judd Apatow (The Larry Sanders Show), Freaks and Geeks followed the Weir siblings--former math whiz Lindsay (Linda Cardellini of the Scooby-Doo feature films and ER) and her younger brother Sam (John Francis Daley)--as they navigated the perils and pleasures of a Michigan high school circa 1980. What separated Freaks and Geeks from most other scholastic series was its brutal honesty--Lindsay and Sam, as well as their friends and parents, were given very human personas that showed failure, malice, indecision, and moments of great clarity. Likewise, the plotlines rarely offered pat solutions to the characters' conflicts--the show unfolded in a naturalistic manner, which was a welcome respite for viewers tired of flashy high school dramas. When combined with its smart dialogue and winning performances (the cast included SCTV veteran Joe Flaherty and Spider-Man star James Franco, as well as the sublime and criminally underrecognized Martin Starr and Seth Rogen as Sam's pal Bill and dry-witted Ken, respectively), the show became a haven for fans of quality television, if only for a brief period of time.

The six-disc boxed set provides over 40 hours of supplemental material, which should satiate even the most obsessive of fans. Twenty-nine separate commentaries from the show's creators, cast (and as some of their parents!), composer Mike Andrews, and fans are included, as are 60 deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes footage, and cast auditions. However, the most striking extra is the warmth that radiates from the commentary participants--their pleasure in taking part in such a quality program is palpable, and will undoubtedly be echoed by all who watch these discs. --Paul Gaita

I can't believe i didn't watch this show when it first aired. This show was masterfully scripted and casted. I bought this series because i've become a fan of Linda Cardellini. She is a regular on the hit t.v. show E.R.. She is even better on this very good series. I wish i could go back in time and watch this show, maybe it wouldn't have been cancelled.

    5 out of 5 stars Couldn't Be Better.......2007-06-14

Drama, Comedy, Excellent Script, Amazing Young Actors...this show was just ahead of its time and the DVD collection is priceless.

5 out of 5 stars Discos and Dragons.......2007-06-12

I finally got this show through Netflix and I devoured it and had to order the set from amazon. This show is an under appreciated gem that never made it. I'm sad to say I never watched it when it was on originally. It reminds me of the Wonder Years with a little bit of a kick. As a bit of a geek who hung out with some freaks growing up I can relate to these kids in more than one way, I also am a school teacher and see these kids going through the same struggles my kids face everyday. Judd Apatow and the writers did a great job of capturing the odd ball, bitter, funny, and sentimental moments of school years. I guarantee you will be moved by these shows they are hilarious at times and very touching at other times. The cast was well chosen as well you'll recognize James Franco(Spiderman), Linda Cardellini (Scooby Doo), Seth Rogen (Knocked Up) and for those MST3K fans out there Joel and Dr. Forrester can be spotted in a few episodes as well. Enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars Freaks.......2007-06-20

Reviled and in some places banned on release, Tod Browning's horror classic is like nothing else you'll ever see-bizarre, bold, and altogether brilliant. A standard soap opera premise is elevated by the conceit of "normal" people as villains, "freaks" as heroes. Browning gets the most out of his unusual cast, mostly non-actors, and creates an eerie, chill-inducing atmosphere throughout. Don't miss that knockout climax.

5 out of 5 stars Gooble Gobble Gooble Gobble WE Accept Her We Accept Her One of Us One of Us!.......2007-05-31

The Freaks in this movie were not the only things freaky in this movie. One of the funnier scenes in this movie was the party where the Freaks began to chant, "Gooble Gobble Gooble Gobble WE Accept Her We Accept Her One of Us One of Us!". How wild and inventive this was. The Freaks in this movie were some unusual people to be sure but they had good hearts. the acting was wooden I suspect but to me it just added to the realness of the movie.

Freaks was a movie about basic good and evil. Freaks showed that those the world considered most different held the same basic humane values most of us hold dear. Yes the unique folk in the movie were different but but they were more humane and honorable than the strong man and trappese artist.

I love this Freaks Movie because, being autistic I like people who are different. I like that this Freaks movie has a very positive message while being lots of fun to watch. I wished we had the complete original version. I pray somewhere a complete original copy with its original shiocking ending is found. My research tells me in the original ending of Freaks the Strong man was condemned to a life as a high pitched sapprano as a result of injury to his, "pride". The lady trapeese artist became a odd ball freak in the form of half Duck half lady.

Enjoy this movie there is plenty of meaning and laughs in the plot.

    3 out of 5 stars Freaky!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-13

This is not a "OH,WOW! You gotta see this!", but it was definitely a one of a kind. I like how they portrayed the "freaks" as the normal people. It's just overall an interesting movie.

5 out of 5 stars THERE IS NO OTHER LIKE "FREAKS"!.......2007-04-13

This is really a one of a kind movie. Creepy atmosphere abounds in this carnival freak show setting, the use of real "Freaks" adds greatly to this bizarre tale of revenge. The DVD transfer is very good and a worthy purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Unique film experience.......2007-03-10

Don't be put off by the claims of exploitation that had this film banned for many years, and make it still unavailable in the UK. A little research will show that the so-called expolited individuals were heavily involved in the production of the film, and this shows in the content. There is no film like it. It is both a revenge thriller, and a Historical document. At times disturbing, I feel it is redeemed by the outcome. Over 70 years old, it still grips in 2007, and is a fascinating insight into what was acceptable not so very long ago. The DVD is great, as it has accompanying documentary footage and interviews, as well as the original Theatrical 'warning' disclaimer. I urge any serious film fan, and those interested in Social History, to get a copy while they can.

In the grand tradition of atomic-age monster movies, Eight Legged Freaks delivers everything you'd want from a giant-spider thriller. The plot's hardly original, but familiarity is half the fun, beginning when toxic waste results in a stampede of gigantic, ravenous arachnids in the depressed mining town of Liberty, Arizona. David Arquette is Liberty's prodigal son, returning to save the town from greedy developers, and to reunite with the lovely local sheriff (Kari Wuhrer), whom he never stopped loving. Before long they're saving the town from a teeming horde of jumbo-size "jumpers," "orb-weavers," tarantulas, and other eight-legged beasties, brought to life by digital effects that are consistently fantastic. Though not quite as witty as the similarly exciting Tremors, this "arach-attack" offers a deft balance of creepy shocks, sight gags, and tongue-in-cheek satire. Cleverly expanding his New Zealand short "Larger Than Life," first-time director Ellory Elkayem gives genre fans and arachnophobes a giddy nightmare they won't soon forget. --Jeff Shannon

    Description

Residents of a rural mining town discover that an unfortunate chemical spill has caused hundreds of little spiders to mutate overnight to the size of SUVs. Movie tagline: Do you hate spiders? Do you really hate spiders? Well they don't like you either.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars GREAT movie!.......2007-06-24

Creepy, fun, edge-of-the-seat movie that I would never part with! I've watched it several times already. This movie made me fond of David Arquette, who I couldn't stand before I saw this movie. The characters are fun and endearing, and I love when David yells the title line of the movie out! Funny every time. Buy it if you like good, clean spookiness. It's a must have!

5 out of 5 stars The most important movie since Pulp Fiction.......2007-06-07

This movie is so intense and pulse pounding I almost cried. It is filled with suspense and horror scenes that you will have nightmares for nights. When I saw the spider in the pop-tent, I threw my shoes across the theater in glee.

5 out of 5 stars Best spider movie of all time!.......2007-04-22

Hands down, this is the best spider movie out there to this day. Its funny, sometimes scray, and action pack, and along for the ride are terrific special effects. Believe or not, the spiders 'talk'. Well, they don't really talk, all they really make are squeaky voices, which are supposed to be their 'talking' voice. Anyway, the film doesn't take its self seriously. And thank god it doesn't. If it had, it would have sucked balls. Check this creature feature, you won't be disapponted.

PS: I'm over 13, but I figured this was easier. Oh and by the way, I'm beggining to write the sequel.

4 out of 5 stars A hilarious and fun throwback to the 50's giant insect monster movies.......2007-04-18

In 2002 there came a film in the tail end of that year's summer blockbuster film season which took me by surprise. The movie I'm talking about is Eight-Legged Freaks. It was from Kiwi-born director Ellory Elkayem and he did a wonderful job of bringing back just a small peek at those fun 1950's giant monster and insect movies like Them! and a host of others.

The movie pretty much follows the same conventions as those old-time monster movies. It has the smart and bookish teenage boy whose love for all things spiders will come in handy as the movie moves along. Then there's the eccentric and creepy loner who collects spiders and learns that the water he has been giving them has now been tainted by toxic chemicals from a drum container that has fallen into a nearby river during transport. This river and the creek it feeds is right next to a down-and-out mining Arizona town, ironically named Prosperity. The movie wouldn't be complete without the arrival of its prodigal son, Chris McCormick (played with quite a bit of understatement by the usual over-the-top David Arquette) whose father used to own the gold mines which the town relied on for its economy.

With a reluctant hero comes the woman he left behind and pined for years ago, but now much older and with kids of her own from a previous marriage. Kari Wuhrer --- of MTV and B-movie fame --- plays Samantha Parker. McCormick's love interest who also happens to be Prosperity's current town sheriff and single mother to the aforementioned teenage boy with the thing for spiders and nubile teen daughter Ashley (played by pre-superstardom Scarlett Johansson). Then there's Wade, the town mayor whose failing Ostrich farm and unused megamall is leading him to sell the town wholesale to some nameless giant corporation.

With the basic plot set and characters introduced all hell breakloose as toxic-mutated spiders grow to giant proportions and begin to terrorize and devour the townspeople. At first, it's isolated attacks until their numbers grown in size and they attack the town itself en masse. This may be a B-movie but it sure had great CGI-effects when it came to the giant arachnids and how they behaved on the screen. The many different types of giant spiders ended up having distinct personalities to distinguish themselves from each other. From the tank-like tarantula to the agile Jumping Spiders and the cunning trapdoor spiders. In fact, these spiders were also given some sort of voice which sounded like chipmunks on helium as they screeched, yipped and screamed their way around the screen.

Eight-Legged Freaks is not something great to write mom home about, but it is a fun movie to sit through, especially one full of teenagers who seem to scream and shout the loudest. This is a type of movie that actually needs a rowdy audience to really entertain. There's really no need to follow the dialogue since most of it is quite forgettable. The action on the screen from the giant spiders chasing motocross-riding teens and their attack on the townspeople at the megamall does well without the need of extraneous dialogue.

Ellory Elkayem did a great job in making Eight-Legged Freaks not just a fun movie but also a throwback to the 50's monster movies that we see now on syndication. This movie showed Elkayem had great potential as a genre filmmaker. It's a shame he had to follow up Eight-Legged Freaks with two very awful and forgettable sequels to the Return of the Living Dead franchise. I'm still hoping that he can rebound from that double-debacle and make more fun monster movies.

2 out of 5 stars TOO MUCH SPOOF SINKS THIS "COULD OF BEEN GREAT" HORROR FILM.......2007-04-14

The biggest problem with this film is that it doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it a horror movie? Is it a comedy? Is it a campy spoof? It is all three, but not enough of any one of them. If they would have changed the spider sound effects to be more threatening, rather than sounding like Gizmo from Gremlins, this would have been a very scary and good movie. It seems to me the action didn't fit the sound effects and really sank this one for me. Too bad as it had a lot of potential. The short that inspired this movie "Larger than Life" is included on the DVD and is way better than the feature film because it takes itself a little more seriously.

Equal parts punk and psychedelia, the Flaming Lips emerged from Oklahoma City as one of the most bracing bands of the late 1980's. The Fearless Freaks documents their rise from Butthole Surfers-imitating noisemakers to grand poobahs of orchestral pop masterpieces. Filmmaker Bradley Beesely had the good fortune of living in the same neighborhood as lead Lip Wayne Coyne, who quickly enlisted his buddy to document his band's many concerts and assorted exploits. The early footage is a riot, with tragic hair styles on proud display as the boys attempt to cover up their lack of natural talent with sheer volume. During one show, they even have a friend bring a motorcycle on stage, which is then miked for sound and revved throughout the performance, clearing the club with toxic levels of carbon monoxide. Great punk rock stuff. Interspersed among the live bits are interviews with the band's family and friends, revealing the often tragic circumstances of their childhoods and early career.

By the time the film reaches the late '90s, Coyne's band has witnessed a number of personnel changes, most notably the introduction of drummer and multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd. It's here that the Flaming Lips begin their ascent into greatness. Fueled by the alt-pop hit "She Don't Use Jelly," the band enters an era of intense experimentation, conducting a symphony for car stereos in a parking garage, releasing a 4-disc album meant to be played simultaneously, and embarking on the creation of their first masterpiece, The Soft Bulletin. Sadly, Steven Drozd's demons keep pace with the band's success. In an incredibly heartbreaking scene, Drozd talks frankly about his addiction while preparing to shoot heroin. Fortunately, Drozd kicks his habit as the Lips enter the studio for their follow-up, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, and the film ends with the band enjoying widespread acclaim as they deliver one extravagant show after another. There are some conspicuous absences in this tale, notably their weird and lucky break appearing on '80s teen drama Beverly Hills 90210 and their tour as openers and backing band for Beck. The bonus disc includes some cool outtakes and performances, but unfortunately none of the band's vibrant music videos. -- Ryan Boudinot

5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Documentary About An Innovative Band and Life..........2007-01-10

What can I say? The Flaming Lips are one of the greatest bands ever and most innovative and unique bands to ever walk the planet. This film shows all the struggles and brilliance of all the members and how they came about to become The Flaming Lips. All are so greatly talented in their own ways. But all so humble, friendly, and lovers of life. I have to give it up to Wayne, what a great overall guy.

I love the acoustic performance of "Psychiatric Explorations Of The Fetus With Needles". Yeah, strange title...but listen to that song and just the mood and energy of it will make life seem happy no matter what.

This one is a classic, go out and buy it.

I must say that I was disturbed by the drug use scene with Stephen. However, this is because I am a former addict. But I still think it was unnecessary to be so graphic; but he truly shared the perils of heroin addiction in the most real way.

I do wonder how the movie will turn out. I can't believe the amount of energy Wayne possesses toward his projects. I found him to be a great role model (I am an artist myself, and quite lazy by comparison).

Only one more complaint. Like in many documentaries, they will tease you with the beginning of a wonderful song, then speak over it, or cut away. I could have used less talk and more music, since this is what the documentary is ultimately about; well beside their lives and the creative process.

I highly recommend this film. Oh, and yes, it is a bit too long; but it only proves how engaged the filmmaker is in the project.

5 out of 5 stars Discover the roots of the Lips philosophy.......2006-09-26

Home videos from the 70's and candid interviews give a great incite of how the Flaming Lips philosophy came about. It is difficult to watch this DVD without wanting to jump up, go out and change the world.

5 out of 5 stars A wild ride you never knew existed.......2006-04-22

I had no idea that the history of the Flaming Lips could be so cool, touching, and odd. It's a great viewing, for huge fans or people new to the group.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best rockumentry's I've seen .......2006-04-02

Along with Belle & Sebastian's "Fans Only" DVD, this is best rockumentry I've seen. Very rarley does one of these thigs leave you with a complete feeling at the ending, like you got your money's worth. That has to do with the cooperation the band had in making this DVD.

    Product Description

For the free spirits and the urban rebels, for Beautiful Freaks of every persuasion who revel in the unusual and the unique, welcome to an offering of self-expression through dance. Join Tempest, a pioneer of Gothic Bellydance in the US, to learn steps and combinations based on the vocabulary of bellydance and adapted to look awesome on a club dancefloor.

Bellydance is an ancient dance of sensuality, body awareness, and cultural blending. In the course of its long history, it has experienced celebration, exaltation, rejection, and ban. It has been worshipped. It has been damned. It has traveled continent to continent and become infused with the wealth of many cultures. If you are looking for a movement style that is different, darkly-exotic and sophisticated, yet feels natural and can be easily modified to fit your individual body language, dance, and clothing style, Belly Dance For Beautiful Freaks will bring you the dance club experience you are seeking - and may inspire you to delve deeper into the world of creative movement.

You can bellydance to any kind of music, from ambient and ethereal to the most pounding hardcore. Whatever mood you need to match, Bellydance for Beautiful Freaks has the engaging, expressive movements you want. Bellydance is a great way to increase your energy level: Even casual social dancing tones the body -- as well as the mind.

If you are a dancer interested in Raks Gothique, or Gothic Bellydance, welcome home. Captured by a camera lens, may this be a glimpse of the realm where - across age groups and national borders - we share our vision of Gothic Bellydance as both social and performance dance - the beautiful, soul-capturing, inspiring art. Enjoy performances by Tempest, hear her thoughts on projecting our individuality through dance, and reflect on the long path the Beautiful Freaks of the world have traversed to create the dance culture we call our own.

Set to amazing Gothic, Industrial, Dark

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Perhaps call it intermediate level?.......2007-06-17

With so many bellydance DVDs on the market, it's probably best to classify each one for exactly what it is, so as better to spot the attributes that are attractive to a particular consumer.

    1. It's different. The first DVD devoted to the fusion of the gothic subculture with bellydance. Tempest gives an excellent introduction to the basics, with a generalized overview of adapting traditional moves to the two extremes of goth influence: the sensual dark ambient and the hard-edged punk-industrial. Parts of this would be a good reference for the dancer wishing to be versed in the alternative styles as well as traditional. Excellent for those who listen to/and prefer goth music but have only had DVDs that practice to traditional Middle Eastern style music (with no instruction of how to adapt the moves to more contemporary or alternative styles of music).

    2. This is mostly an instructional reference DVD; not practice with drills, not even choreography per-se (One star was deducted from the review because I thought the routines would be explained/practiced and that there would be more some drills). There are 2 main combinations demonstrated (one soft and sensual, and the other hard-edged and fast)that have two parts each. The moves that comprise them are excellently explained and then briefly demonstrated in individual sections, but the exact timing and choreography of those moves used in the demonstration are, well...not demonstrated. This aspect can be too advanced for the beginner, allthough you can pause the DVD after each move to practice on your own before continuing. Advanced users may find the simple explanation of basic moves boring, and without repetitive drills or a continuous workout, this DVD may suit them more as a reference to gothic dance style (particularly useful would be the gothic expression workshop). There is a nice warmup that could be used prior to a workout, though (but sorry, no cooldown).

    3. A note on the performances. Tempest does 2 performances that demonstrate yet 2 more flavors that fall under the goth umbrella. The first is more a flirty dark cabaret dance, and the second being a sensual dance in what seems to be a fusion of ancient Egyptian and early 1900's attire (of course my description does not give it justice). These dances demonstrate the dark essence that makes the dancing "gothic." As a word of caution, if your definition of goth is more narrow, and has you expecting something more sinister and vampirish, you might be scratching your head in confusion.

I would recommend Contemporary Bellydancing and Yoga Conditioning with Ariellah along with this DVD. That way all users get a workout (the beginner also gets excellent instruction and the advanced gets drills). The choreography routine is slowly demonstrated and explained in detail. Bellydance for Beautiful Freaks would serve as a great complement (and would be much easier to follow) if used together with Ariellah's DVD. Hopefully, we'll see more instructional projects from them (or at least inspire more gothic bellydance workouts with other artists).

5 out of 5 stars Fun and easy to follow.......2007-05-08

I bought this DVD because I read the moves can be used when hitting the clubs. I was a bit skeptical after reading some of the reviews here, but decided to give it a chance, and I have to say I'm glad I did. Bellydance for the Beautiful Freaks is now my favorite bellydance DVD out of about ten discs in my collection.

The best part about the DVD is the way Tempest breaks down the moves. Some of the more complex moves *especially hip movements* may take longer for you to grasp, but they are presented in a way that is slow and easy to follow. Quite suitable for a beginner.

I am not the most coordinated chick on the planet, so I could really appreciate the way the disc is laid out - The majority of the DVD is about the isolated movements. Tempest instructs in the video to practice these individual movements and you can pair them up in multiple combinations for dance floor use. I tried this on my own, and even after watching the video only twice, I could pull together the most basic moves to do a simplified routine - which was my aim in the first place.

There are also 2 actual bellydance routines for you to work toward or practice with. (Each dance routine is broken down into two sections, so it equates to 4 demonstrations). I thought these were really fun, quick little lessons perfect for the beginner. Of course, I didn't get the entire routine down the first time, but I managed to do a good portion of it - more than I've been able to do with any other video, so that alone makes this one a keeper. With practice I feel confident I'll be able to duplicate the more complex of the two demonstrations.

Overall I am extremely pleased with purchasing this particular DVD. I do wish there had been more demonstrations included, but at the same time, there is enough there to get started with. I do think some of the subculture discussion/explanation could've been left out and the space on the disc used for more dance presentation or demonstration. Perhaps it was Tempest's intention to use the platform for those who are "goth curious". However, that seems kind of a wasted effort since most of the people who buy this type of dance video are likely to already be from somewhere within the scene. The segment doesn't necessarily detract from the video, but I would imagine most people will choose to skip that part.

One final thing I really liked is the way Tempest talked (briefly) about dancing in club wear - particularly footwear. Her explanation of how the shoes you have on may affect the way you dance, and the way in which you will be able to execute some of the hip movements is a great tip - and something easily overlooked if not really considered in advance.

3 out of 5 stars Useful But Advanced.......2007-04-25

My motivation for buying this DVD was to find a fun workout. I should point out I'm a dance beginner and not in very good shape. I like Goth clubs and the music but I never dance. My friends tell me it's foolproof but I'd still like to look good doing it. I was hoping this DVD would be a good workout and give me practice with Goth dance moves.

In short, this DVD is too advanced for me. Tempest explains everything clearly with ample demonstrations. The problem lies not with the DVD itself but my skill level going into it. I am not as good a dancer as is required to do some of the moves. Also, I was expecting more of heart-pumping experience when what I got were isolations of muscle groups. Again, not a problem with the DVD and actually it's a good toning workout.

I've put Bellydance for the Beautiful Freaks on my shelf while I work on getting into better shape. In my opinion it's not for newbies. However, I would recommend it to someone wanting to improve dance moves and once I'm in better shape I'll start practicing the moves.

2 out of 5 stars For Beginners Only.......2007-02-26

Let me start out by saying, I would actually give this about 2.5 stars because it's not a HORRIBLE video, but it just didn't deliver what I was hoping for. While Tempest certainly is articulate and personable, and gives some good pointers about what Gothic style is/isn't, the actual *bellydance* part I found sorely lacking. She gives a basic warm-up, and then two different sets of Gothic dance moves (one slow and one hard-edge) to be used in the clubs when you go out dancing. Nothing really here for those interested in real in-depth choreography or even a good solid workout. It's kind of like watching one of your college friends try to give you "cool lessons" in about 20 minutes. Remember when you first turned 21 and could finally go do the late night stuff with the grownups? That's pretty much the audience here.

Also, what I don't understand is how these moves are considered "Gothic", when they're just basic tribal fusion bellydance moves done with a very serious air about oneself. I suppose it's the music and the costumes, but again I was waiting for something new here that just wasn't delivered. It was like watching someone on the dancefloor of a club, only they were pausing to explain everything. And call me old-fashioned but how is one supposed to really move well in those giant Frankenstein moonboots? I guess I just don't get it... even though I've been going to clubs since Tempest was in diapers. Oh well.

To her credit, she does a couple of decent cutesy-goth dance numbers at the end which are interesting. I liked the burlesque-ish one and got more ideas from that than the whole rest of the DVD. Not lighting the world on fire here but decent. Again, if you're a beginner and want a different perspective on the genre then I suppose this DVD will do something for you. If not, I would recommend something else.

4 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like this video even more........2007-01-30

Since most bellydancers tend to be beautiful freaks anyway, this whole DVD almost seems to miss the point with the faddish combat boots, buckles and mask-like performance expression. We're dancing right? Not going to war... Where's the sex appeal? As mentioned, the basic bellydance moves are well-presented and clear. Tempest definitely has a personality and presence that comes through the camera. The production quality is excellent although other World Dance New York videos show very helpful front and back views. A bit of a beef though is that if bellydance started as a fertility dance a thousand years ago, this version of the craft would be akin to modern American birth control. It misses that certain something. Although the moves do require skill (probably more for the advanced beginner) the expression has nothing of the fine art of the flirt. Now, where the DVD works quite well is in her performances. The white goth performance in particular is exquisite and in its own way answers my question "what is goth bellydance?" Ah-ha! It is Victorian -- dark Victorian -- or something of a dark cabaret. That said, I would definitely recommend the video for the performances and for the basic instructions, but perhaps one should only add the faddish boots, buckles and cool looks sparingly.

By the time the pair of bloodshot, gun-toting, Rastafarian eyeballs appears, you know you're witnessing the birth of a new cult film. In the delirious Freaked, a sleazy multinational corporation hires a spoiled-rotten former child star named Ricky Coogin (Alex Winter, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure) to be the spokesman for a toxic biochemical fertilizer. When Ricky goes down to the poverty-stricken third world country where the toxin is used, he---along with his best friend and a comely anti-corporate activist (Megan Ward, Joe's Apartment)--get sidetracked to a freakshow presented by the flamboyant Elijah C. Skuggs (Randy Quaid, Kingpin). But Skuggs doesn't just display freaks, he creates them, and Ricky is going to be his masterpiece. This is only the beginning of a crass, tasteless, and hysterical (in both senses of the word) movie. Co-writer/co-director Winter and his pals pile on joke after idiosyncratic joke (clearly influenced by the shotgun-style humor of Airplane! and Mad magazine). You can feel that they fell all over themselves with laughter when they conceived each bit--no tepid Hollywood committee would have turned a movie's love interest into a double-gendered conjoined twin or cast Mr. T as a Bearded Lady, along with such an eclectic bunch as Bobcat Goldthwait, Brooke Shields, and an uncredited Keanu Reeves. Freaked is clearly a labor of love that deserves to find its infatuated audience. This dvd features a bushel of extras, including some unjustly deleted scenes. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Those who ignore this film will stand knee deep in the blood of their children.......2006-06-02

Despite being one of the most overlooked and underpromoted films upon its release in 1993, most of the cult following for FREAKED never saw the film until much later. This hysterical debut feature from Tom Stern and Alex Winter began life with plenty of promise: a funny script, two talented up-and-coming comedy directors, a great ensemble cast, plenty of shock value, and even cross-promotion merchandising (HIDEOUS MUTANT FREEKZ action figures made their way to stores before the film's title was changed, and are now considered valuable collectors items). However, the film was shuffled into obscurity thanks to a change in the corporate leadership of Twentieth Century Fox. FREAKED had only a limited theatrical release and little fanfare when it finally hit home video.

FREAKED is the tale of one-time child actor (and full time jerk), Ricky Coogan (Winter) who makes a Faustian deal with the EES (Everything Except Shoes) Corporation to promote a dangerous chemical fertilizer, Zygrot 23, in the South American country of Santa Flan. Joined by his horn dog buddy Ernie (Michael Stoyanov) and perky environmentalist Julie (Megan Ward), the trio happen upon a freak show only to become part of the act thanks to the handiwork of evil Elijah C. Skuggs (Randy Quaid), a crazed ringmaster who creates new freaks using--what else--Zygrot 23.

And that's just the first act of the film! If you're at all familiar with Winter and Stern's earlier short films (SQUEAL OF DEATH), then you may have an inkling as to what a treat FREAKED is. The humor is extremely twisted and the sight gags and jokes just keep coming. Once transformed into freaks, Ricky, Ernie, and Julie befriend a cast of characters that include psychic trolls, Rastafarian eyeballs with legs, down-trodden wrenches, a giant worm, a woman played by Mr. T (playing himself, only female), and Bobcat Goldthwaite playing a freak with the body of a man but the head of a sock-pocket. The freaks must band together to escape from Skuggs and stop the spread of Zygrot 23 before the world is overrun by more freaks. The movie boasts cameos from Keanu Reeves, Brooke Shields, Morgan Fairchild, Butthole Surfers frontman Gibby Haines, and Calvert DeForest (AKA Larry "Bud" Melman).

    5 out of 5 stars Freakin' A+.......2006-01-17

Why do I give this movie five stars? Because it is funny. That's all. I really liked it. The story is bizarre, the writing the height of silliness, and the acting intentionally goofy. It's also got a fair amount of gross out humor, which I usually don't enjoy. But in this case I'm willing to make an exception.

There's some great extras as well, surprising for a low budget, forgotten film like this. They're not all great, but they're still included. That's pretty cool.

The favorite part for me is seeing William Sadler, Keanu Reeves, and Randy Quaid acting in this strange film. Sadler as head of the EES corporation has perhaps the greatest evil line ever uttered by a ruthless bad guy.

Freaked is sort of a cross between Mad magazine, Monty Python, and Airplane. It won't appeal to everyone, but it's still pretty damn funny after all these years. Rent it before you buy it if you want to play it safe.

2 out of 5 stars This movie is a bad as it gets.......2006-01-16

I can't believe Hollywood would make such a film as Freaked. It should be called "Boring", and a waste of time and money.

Their is no plot, and it just rambles along. The Attack of the Killer Tomatoes at least had some suspense to it. Despite the big name actors in this --it goes nowhere. If you like movies made for celebral pygmies then maybe you like Freaked.

4 out of 5 stars in a sea of cookie cutter movies, one stands out.......2005-10-12

I love this movie, the crude humor, tasteless action and complete misuse of quality actors, shows promise in hollywood. I never laughed so hard, and when i can't take it anymore, they come with that right hook that some comedy writers fear to go. Alex Winter, may have sold his soul with Keanue Reeves in Bill and Ted, but he regained it with this beautiful piece of art. I wished more Brooke Sheilds in the movie, but hey, I am gonna take it that the budget was pretty much blown on her little role. Mr. T, now there is a man who doesn't take himself to serious. All and all, one of my favorite movies.

like most of you, i was taken in by the title and poster for this movie. it gave me the sense that this was going to be a sick, sick movie. plus its released by troma. with people saying that its more controversial now than it was in the 70's, how could it not be good?! i found a used copy in my home town and felt thrilled. i put it in that night hoping to see some of the most grusome acts ever displayed on film. but no, i got an hour of a midgit making stupid remarks, and an old man thats into S&M...for himself, and not anyone else. the acting is beyond horrible, the effects and "gore" are waayyyyyy sub-par, and the only interesting character, the doctor, has 5 min of screen time and then is killed by the midgit. and i know what youre saying, "but paul, i love bad horror movies, theyre funny!" not this one, its so bad youll wonder why you watched it. DO NOT BUY THIS MOVIE OR EVEN ATTEMPT TO WATCH IT!!!!

New horror just can't compare to this 1970's gore, S&M, bondage, torture film. Blood Sucking Freaks gets better every time you watch it. However, I wouldn't recomend it to anyone under 17.

1 out of 5 stars Horrifying, irredeamable depravity .......2006-12-08

Under no circumstances would I recommend this to anyone. It will be difficult to put together anything lengthy without resorting to profanity in order to convey my emphatic, violent conviction that this is one of the worst things that humanity has ever put together. That other reviewers have called this a successful comedy seriously impugns the human spirit, even the sort of outsiders who find their way to this page. Honestly, Sardu says what the movie is himself when he is describing the torture show (public murder, torture, etc. accompanied by a minimal plot and a score) which is the movie's sickly, insipid pretension to art (that it is self-aware). The craft of the film is laughable and need not be addressed (save to say that the torture is convincing enough to be effective). Although I generally oppose ipso facto laws (retroactively punishing people after enactment of laws) I think in the case of this movie everyone involved in its production, right down to the gaffer and the two grip providers mentioned in the credits, should be fined, jailed and put in the same database as sex offenders. I feel like I should turn myself in just for having watched it.

Vicious, artless and unforgivable; you'd be better in the long run spending the 85 minute run time huffing glue than watching this (brain damage is better than the foul, ineradicable residue of this movie being trapped in your mind).

3 out of 5 stars Elvira fans ALMOST get what they wanted..........2006-09-23

I used to stay up late to catch Movie Macabre with Elvira on weekends during the 80's. I was thrilled to hear finally after 20+ years they were going to release some of the shows on DVD.

The one reason to buy was to see Elvira host the movies and add her comedic take on the film. Her over the top character and dialog filled with innuendo was what made her fun to watch.
Unfortunately one of her sketches is edited in "Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks". It removes John Paragon as her "bad joke" telling stalker/fan "Breather". There doesn't seem to be a real reason for this since Paragon is shown in the closing credits of the show "John Paragon as the Breather".
Also not included are several (quick) interruptions Elvira had made during scenes of the film. Something would happen during the film and she would make a short joking comment and then go right back to the movie before her pre-commercial advertisments (longer) sketches.

Hopefully the next batch of episodes will have Elvira's unedited scenes intact. The DVDs do include the movie without Elvira. Though fans are more interested in Elvira and Movie Macabre. I'm happy they released some of the shows but Shout!Factory could have at least given a disclaimer that the Elvira scenes were edited to begin with.

I guess it's better than nothing, but at least let fans know what they're getting.

4 out of 5 stars FUN HALLOWEEN FARE(but parents beware).......2006-09-21

This 2 dvd set brings back great memories of the old MOVIE MACABRE show from the 1980's. Lot's of schlocky horror movie fun hosted by one of the all-time hot funny babes, Elvira! The picture quality in both films are bad. I guess that's to be expected. It kinda adds to the "B" feeling of the whole production. All in all it's good fun, but parents do beware. The packaging and Amazon rating says the 2 features are rated "PG" but there is lot's of nudity scattered throughout both films. These obviously aren't the edited for TV cuts I've seen previously. I'll have to check out the other 2 new Elvira sets now. Recommended!
