A truly perfect movie, the 1942 Casablanca still wows viewers today, and for good reason. Its unique story of a love triangle set against terribly high stakes in the war against a monster is sophisticated instead of outlandish, intriguing instead of garish. Humphrey Bogart plays the allegedly apolitical club owner in unoccupied French territory that is nevertheless crawling with Nazis; Ingrid Bergman is the lover who mysteriously deserted him in Paris; and Paul Heinreid is her heroic, slightly bewildered husband. Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Conrad Veidt are among what may be the best supporting cast in the history of Hollywood films. This is certainly among the most spirited and ennobling movies ever made. --Tom Keogh

What can I say that hasn't been said before about this movie? For those few that have been living under a rock: Casablanca is about Rick a Cafe owner who "I don't stick my neck out for nobody" is his life's motto, and how this motto begins to wreck at him when his old flame (has Ingrid Bergman ever looked better?) comes back into his life.
The movie has it all: Suspence, romance, humor (in spades), and that song!
Watch it, just because it's a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Casablanca.......2007-06-21

No film has embedded itself more firmly in the collective imagination than this captivating, still-unparalleled romance adventure, which epitomizes everything that Hollywood filmmaking--at its very best--strives to be. Was there ever a more unlikely yet perfect pairing than the radiant Bergman and the world-weary Bogart? Portraying the twilight of civilized society in a foreign place, and the rising menace of new world evils, director Curtiz masterfully juggles tragedy and humor, intrigue and action to tell a timeless story rich in personal and political detail. And what an indelible, heart-catching finale! "Casablanca" won Oscars for Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay, and continues to mesmerize on repeat viewings.

5 out of 5 stars It's a Bogart and Bergman movie, how many stars would you have given it?.......2007-06-02

Casablanca, of course, doesn't require a review from me--the entire world knows about it. So I'll make this short and to the point.

PROS:

1. Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Paul Henreid and that darn French Captain Louis Renault (Claude Rains) star. That's two stars right there.

2. Some of the best writing Hollywood (we called it Hollywood in those days instead of Harletwood) ever produced. That's a star.

3. Some of the best music ever mastered for a movie--the world still remembers it a zillion years later. That's another star.

4. When you consider the idea is actually a simple love triangle during World War Two how could it have attained such greatness...well of course anyone who has ever seen it already knows, it was the writing, directing, acting, and music. Oh yes, Peter Lorre stars in it and several others you will reconize such as Sydney Greenstreet. I could go on and on about this movie, take it apart and tell about how great the writing, and acting are, but have you seen how many reviews this thing has? Besides, you all don't need this country boy to tell you about THIS movie. Moving along, that's a star right there, a really low end idea that came out 'great'. Proof once again, if you got the idea, writing, your actors can act, and your director can director, (and a fine song or two) nothing else really matters.

CONS:

1. There are no CONS: in this movie, I can suggest no updating, no changing of script, idea, directing, acting or anything to make it better. It's such a good thing Hollywood had a long list of actors to choose from--I don't think they could have pulled it off without them...I'm watching it again as I write this, that darn French Captain kind-a grows on you, and to think HE turns out to be a sentimentalist to!

I will add one last thing, Casablanca is not a popcorn movie like I usually watch (the old Science Fiction and monster movies). It can not be watched like a regular popcorn movie. No. It's script, acting, directing goes too far for such trival things as simple entertainment. You must listen to each word, study their body language, watch their eyes as you watch the movie. And just remember...this movie was filmed and I believe shown as Casablance was "actually" being invaded by the darkest shadow this world had faced in its' ten thousand years of recorded history...and they almost won.

If I weren't a Christian I would have said you need a shot of gin and a cigarrette...but I am, and most snack foods just don't do credit to this movie. You decide.

So there it is, rated as the second greatest movie ever made, and not one s--t, not one cuss or swear word, not one exploding head and almost no special effects. Casablanca can only be described one way and with one word...Art. Bye!

This four-disc set, part of Warner's Essential Classics series, collects three truly classic films--Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, and Doctor Zhivago--in one inexpensive package. The drawback is you don't get the bonus second discs of the movies--or, in the case of the deluxe version of Gone with the Wind, the third and fourth discs (the movie of Zhivago is still on a two-sided "flipper" disc)--so if you're a documentary junky or if you simply have to see the Casablanca TV show, you'll want to stick with the individual releases. But this set does include the commentary tracks and any other material that was on the movie discs of those sets, and best of all, they have the great remastered pictures of the previous releases. So if you just want the movies looking better than ever with some bonus features thrown in for good measure, the price per movie makes this set an attractive bargain. --David Horiuchi

If you are looking for the widescreen version of these films,
do not buy this product. "Gone with the Wind" and "Casablanca"
are in standard format, not widescreen! Only "Doctor Zhivago" is
in widescreen. Very disappointing!

5 out of 5 stars Essential Classics.......2007-03-10

These are three of my favorite movies with some of the best performances I have seen.

Clark Gable was great in "Gone with the Wind", but Vivien Leigh was magnificent and made me a lifelong fan with this movie.

Humphrey Bogart and the beautiful Ingrid Bergman, who could ask for more? In "Casablanca" you also get a great script and "As Time Goes By."

"Doctor Zhivago" gave me my first look into the Russia of the early 20th century. It is also a passionate love story.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Come on HDDVD!.......2007-05-21

Great movie hands down. It's the HDDVD I am upset with. The film is forced into a 4x3 aspect ratio. I understand this is to ensure the theatrical presentation of the film, but why not have an option for widescreen. I have never minded the bars associated with letterbox, but I want my widescreen tv to have a full picture! Some hddvds even letterbox films still. Why? I already have widescreen, your making my screen smaller! There needs to be some better viewing options. Oh well, HVD will be out in 20-30 years, we'll all have to buy everything all over again anyway.

Oh, would someone please bring an ultimate edition of Gone with the Wind to HDDVD? This should have been one of the first titles made available. But I'm sure they have I in the works. It will probably be like ten HD discs and cost over a hundred dollars knowing the film industry.

5 out of 5 stars HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU, CASABLANCA...as NEVER BEFORE in HD DVD!.......2007-04-22

65 years after it first it theaters, CASABLANCA remains a perfect film, a timeless masterpiece, and one of the most beloved American cinematic treasures. There are only a handful of films from the 'golden era' that can still captivate any audience, even those with no interest in classic film, no less black & white films.

Warner Brothers gave this crown jewel the deluxe treatment on regular DVD about 3 years ago, and it was impossible to conceive that even the glories of 1080p HD DVD could really make it look THAT much better...

Well, it DOES. Several people I know use this CASABLANCA HD DVD as their 'demo disc' for their home theater. Despite B&W, monaural sound, and a square aspect ratio, the clarity is unreal, and it only heightens the enjoyment of one of the greatest films ever made.

Kudos to Warner for giving this to fans so early in the HD game. There is a terrible paucity of truly great films available in Hi Def right now, regardless of format. None of the other studios seem to recognize they have libraries, and relegate their releases to the recent flavor of the month (for the most part). Warner has been the top video label for years, and this is just another reason why. They really know what they're doing.

All the exceptional special features created for the regular DVD have been carried over, and although they are standard definition, the upconversion makes them look better than ever.

This is truly an ESSENTIAL part of any HD library.

5 out of 5 stars Truly not overrated.......2007-02-28

I personally haven't seen Casablanca in HD as of yet. However, I am in total agreement with the previous review. If you simply are watching movies for HD rather than the storyline or simply do not care for black and white films, you are missing the picture. This movie was released during the war and overwhelmingly accepted at a time when blockbuster movies were not at the top of the list for our nation. It has been revered as the best movie of all time by many and ranked #2 on AFI's top 100. Simply reviewing this film strictly for the set or grainy picture is not sufficient and is pretty much the same as if someone 50 years from now were to make the same remarks about an epic film of our day. In closing I would like to say that even though I don't agree with the 3 stars, at least you watched the movie before you knocked it. My advice, watch it once more and appreciate it.

5 out of 5 stars Anyone who can't appreciate this film, shouldn't watch movies........2007-02-03

This classic film is more than just a love story- it's at once an allegory, morality tale, and propaganda film. Most of all- it's propaganda for living. It sends the message that the greatest battle we have to fight is with ourselves, and that inevitably- love conquers all. If you watched this film as all you saw were grainy models, stoic acting, and car scenes obviously filmed in studio- you were looking too hard. You should look at the film and see yourself staring back. There is something for everyone in this film, which makes it good- but if you know anything about the world at the time this movie was made, it's a truly great work. Watch as Renault, the corrupt Frenchman, battles against the Germans with snide comments and other asides- but just as he battles against the Huns- the Vichy and Free parts of his mind are struggling for his better inclinations. Take another look through the lenses of the era, and you will understand why it swept the academy awards, won unanimous support of the censors, and the love of a war torn public.

3 out of 5 stars Casablanca is overrated.......2007-01-16

Maybe it's because of the detail in HD-DVD format, but I think Casablanca is a B-Movie at the most. The love story is not believable, Bogart is emotionless and delivers like he memorized the lines. Bergman does a credible job, except I don't buy her character being in love with Rick. Sure she had fun with him in Paris, but I didn't feel the love. That's the big deal about the movie, right? The effects were cheesy (maybe due to the High-Definition, they really show models as models) aircraft & buildings look like toys, the rear-projection car scenes are obviously not in a car.

I had never actually watched this movie all the way through before. I have always seen clips and parts, but not the whole movie in toto. With all the hype and buildup I really had expected a better movie. The HD-DVD is great, with marvelous quality and clear sound. But the movie itself was not all it's cracked up to be (imho).

Amazon.com essential video

When it comes to long-awaited treats like The Marx Brothers Collection, you can never get too much of a good thing. These seven comedies can't compare to the sheer lunacy of the five classics (The Cocoanuts, Animal Crackers, Monkey Business, Horse Feathers, and Duck Soup) that the Marx Bros. made for Paramount between 1929 and 1933 (available in The Marx Brothers Silver Screen Collection), but when uber-producer Irving Thalberg signed Groucho, Harpo, and Chico to an MGM contract in 1935 (by which time sibling costar Zeppo had become the team's off-screen manager), he knew just how to cure their box-office blues. As a result, A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races were critical and commercial hits, lavishly produced according to the "Tiffany" studio's golden-age formula of glamorous set pieces and musical numbers combined with sensible plots that smoothly integrated snappy, well-written Marxian antics. Opera is the jewel of this set, with timeless scenes (the Stateroom, the Groucho-Chico contract negotiation, etc.) that rank among the greatest bits of silver-screen comedy... not to mention Groucho's flirtatious insults at Margaret Dumont's upper-crust expense.

A Day at the Races deserves near-equal acclaim ("Get-a your tootsie-fruitsie ice cream!"), but Thalberg's death in 1937 dealt a devastating blow, and the Marxes suffered from studio indifference, resulting in a succession of comedies that are timelessly enjoyable even as they fall prey to diminishing returns. By the time they made Go West and The Big Store, the Marxes were out of their element, and a few of the musical interludes indulge racial stereotypes that were common in the studio era. Despite this, these movies remain fresh and frantic, and Warner Bros. (holder of the RKO and MGM libraries) has done a marvelous job of packaging The Marx Brothers Collection to nostalgically approximate the filmgoing experience of the 1930s and '40s, with vintage shorts (Our Gang, Robert Benchley comedies, MGM cartoons, etc.) from the time of each feature's original release. Archival materials are slim but worthwhile (especially Groucho's 1961 interview with TV talk-show host Hy Gardner), and while Glenn Mitchell's commentary on Races is sparse and superficial, Leonard Maltin brings his usual superfan's enthusiasm and encyclopedic knowledge to bear on a full-length Opera commentary track. The new documentaries are somewhat redundant, but essential viewing for Marx Bros. neophytes. With all seven films presented in pristine condition, this is definitely a Marx Brothers Collection worth having. --Jeff Shannon

Description

This set includes seven of only thirteen Marx Brothers films ever made! Collection includes: "A Night at the Opera" (1935) - The Marx Brothers turn Mrs. Claypool's opera into chaos in their efforts to help two young hopefuls get a break. It contains the famous scene where Groucho, Chico and Harpo cram a ship's stateroom with wall-to-wall people, gags, one-liners, musical riffs and two hard-boiled eggs. "A Day at the Races" (1937) - Groucho stars as Hugo Z. Hackenbush, a horse veterinarian dispensing horse pills and quips with equal glee. Chico selling racing tips, Harpo destroying a piano to turn it into a harp and favorite foil actress Margaret Dumont make this thoroughbred comedy wall-to-wall hilarity. "A Night in Casablanca" (1946) - This parody of the Bogart/Bergman 1943 classic features the Nazis vs. the "nutsies" as the Marx Brothers foil Axis criminals when they find stolen jewels and paintings Nazis have hidden in a hotel. "Room Service"/"At the Circus" - These two films are combined on one disc to provide double doses of laughter. In "Room Service" (1938), Lucille Ball and Ann Miller provide comic co-star support while the Marx Brothers play producers trying to keep their show above water and a hotel room over their head. In "At the Circus" (1939) Groucho stars as professional shyster lawyer J. Cheever Loophole in the middle of big-top bedlam as the boys try to save the circus and look to Margaret Dumont for the money to do so. Groucho sings one of his famous songs, "Lydia the Tattooed Lady." "Go West"/"The Big Store" - Another Marx Brothers twin bill makes this a hilarious comedy "two-fer." In the first, the Marxmen "Go West" (1940) to the land of outlaws and Indians where the fun never stops and where they outwit a land grabber. In "The Big Store" (1941), Groucho plays Attorney Wolf J. Flywheel who with sidekick Wacky (Harpo) and bodyguard Ravelli (Chico) are investigating the shady dealings of a crooked department store owner. Bonus extras include commentary by Leonard Maltin.

5 out of 5 stars An honest to goodness classic comedy!!!!!!.......2007-06-14

If you want a good clean entertainment and a good laugh, and a classic fun, then the Marx Brothers are for you.

5 out of 5 stars Classics.......2007-05-24

By today's standards, these films are fairly slow-paced in places. Even some of the jokes seem lame in contrast to today's vulgarity. But if you've never seen the Marx Bros at the top of their game, you've gotta see this collection. Fast forward through the occasional sappy romantic bits if you must. Savor the interaction between Harpo and Chico and Groucho. I promise you'll laugh.

5 out of 5 stars still laughing.......2007-05-13

The best of the Marx Brothers comes alive into our living room . I laughed when I was a kid , and now when my Grandchildren come over , they want to watch the Marx Brothers, and I still laugh at their satire . It's as funny now as it was back in my younger years . I'm glad my Grandchildren love them , and I hope their Grandchildren love the Marx Brothers also . It's hard to find good clean entertainment now days , and these movies are classics . I recommend the Marx Brothers for anyone who needs a laugh , and an afternoon for good entertainment .

5 out of 5 stars The Marvelous Marx Brothers Collection!.......2007-03-31

This collection showcases some of the Marx Brothers' biggest film hits. Kitty Carlisle (who was a guest on television's "What's My Line?" in the 1960s) does her own operatic singing in "A Night at the Opera." She is interviewed, with Dom DeLuise and others, in a DVD featurette included in this collection, and talks about that wild, wonderful association with the Brothers. An interview with Groucho Marx reveals the true story of what happened in producer Irving Thalberg's office when he made the mistake of keeping the brothers waiting too long for scheduled meetings! These movies are classics and give today's "movies" more than a run for their money! Well worth ordering, viewing, and treasuring forever.

All in all, I am very happy with my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars they drive by night.......2007-01-29

I love everything he does. Too bad they don't have "bad" guys with principles anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific films but if you bought these separately you've got the same set without the cardboard holding box.......2006-12-13

It's the holidays so what better thing to do than package up previously released films and a couple of previously released older Bogart classics? Warner has done a good job here combining two of Bogie's finest films "Casablanca" and "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" along with "They Drive By Night" and Bogie's starmaking performance as bad guy Ray earle in "High Sierra" (perhaps a sense of humor as well from those who combined this with "Sierra Madre" where Bogie plays a very different iconic role).

John Huston may be America's most consistently brilliant filmmaker. That's saying a lot considering the competition but Huston the son of actor Walter Huston tackled a number of genres with intelligence, a cynical wit and a sharp eye for human behavior. John Huston began as a screenwriter with one of his first jobs working on "Murders in the Rue Morgue" for Robert Florey in 1932 (that's not counting his many appearances as an extra in his father's films). By 1941 he found himself in the director's chair for the first of many collaborations with Humphrey Bogart in "The Maltese Falcon".

"The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" was only Huston's sixth credited film as director and it still stands tall in his 47 film career as director. The story of three men in search of gold in the mountains of Mexico and how greed and paranoia overwhelm the three men (Bogart, Walter Huston and Bruce Bennett) contributing to tragedy sounds like something that should be a folk tale warning of how gold can bring out the worst in a man.

"Sierra Madre" and "Casablanca" both look terrific with crisp, sharp looking images. Warner has done a superb job of cleaning up both these classic films. "Sierra Madre" doesn't look quite as good as "Casablanca" with sections that are grainy, white spots and other minor analog imperfections but on the whole looks quite good. The grainy quality of the film in a couple of scenes doesn't surprise me given some of the location photography and the occasional use of telephoto shots where the picture is a bit unsteady. Overall "Casablanca" wins this contest in terms of looks but it's somehow appropriate that "Sierra Madre" looks a bit rough around the edges given the cynical nature, location photography and a feeling as close to naturalistic as Hollywood could do at the time. Considering how old the film is I personally feel it looks extremely good in this deluxe edition from Warner.

"Casablanca" actually looks better. Digitally cleaned up with a superior negative used for this edition it's one of the sharpest looking older films I've seen Warner put out. Audio for both films sounds extremely good doing justice to the musical scores for each film and features clear dialogue.

"High Sierra" was originally released to DVD in a single disc edition in 2003. This is exactly the same release as before. Warner released a top notch transfer for 2003 and it still looks extremely good three years later. Audio has considerable punch.

"They Drive By Night" gets a very nice transfer as well. Again it was previously released in 2003 and it's a minor gem from director Raoul Walsh. Audio sounds fine here as well with dialogue presented very clear.

The 2003 releases have two short but informative featurettes that Warner put together for the original snapcase releases back in 2003. Both are extremely good and worthwhile to watch. "Casablanca" actually has all the same materials that I reviewed in 2003 (although I can't find the link for some reason) so I'll briefly provide highlights of this set. We get a TV adaptation of the film which was produced in the 50's. It's most notable for reminding you how great the movie is. It's comparable to watching a high school production of a Broadway play you've seen. The documentary on Bogart which is narrated by Bacall Bogie's romantic lead in film and life provides an excellent if superficial background. There's no dirt but that's not a surprise. Warner cartoon short "Carrotblanca" a somewhat anemic spoof of the film shows up here as well with Bugs playing Bogie and various Warner characters filling the other character roles. A solid documentary is also included on the making of the film and deleted scenes (without the audio) which was recently discovered.

"Treasure" has lots of great stuff buried on the second disc and some fool's gold as well. The older documentary on Huston narrated by Robert Mitchum is a gem and while its not warts and all it's about as close as you're likely to get in the way of a kiss and tell biography on film about this legendary hell raiser. The second on the making of the film features some nice interviews and trivia but isn't quite what I had hoped. It's not bad just doesn't have as many gold nuggets as I expected. We also get a Bogie trailer collection, along with "8 Ball Bunny" which is a classic and funny short that references the film (Faux Bogie: "Excuse me could you help a fellow American down on his luck?" Bugs: "Hit the road!"). We get a Warner Night Out hosted by Leonard Maltin with lots of cool stuff that you might have seen if you had attended the theater to see this when it was released. Finally we get a collection of photos, a radio broadcast of "Treasure" featuring Bogie and Walter Huston, a second cartoon, storyboards and behind-the-scenes photos.

Bottom line: If your film fan hasn't purchased these separate this is a great set. However if you did buy any of these titles individually I should warn you there's nothing here that's new. Unlike the second Bogie set which does have some films that hadn't been released to DVD before (the gem in that set is "The Maltese Falcon" in a three disc special edition but there are also some worthwhile Bogie gold in that set as well. There's no fool's gold but as with any set the quality of the gold will vary).

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2006-07-08

This is a great dvd that gives you more insight to the band. Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2006-05-30

Actually, I have to say this is not something worth buying, even if you are a die-hard fan, which I can say without any doubt in my mind, I am. proof? i have drumsticks and picks from countless shows, shirts, cds, posters etc signed by all the ladies, and of course every ladies room cd and ep/demo/yellow tape/itunes recording they have ever put out... and i was truly dissapointed by this DVD, it is advertized as a live show with interviews, and that part is fine, but the only extra feature is you get to watch the interview uncut... no 'maroon foot cream' or DVD-rom features. if you know someone that has it, watch it so that you can say you have seen it. But I wouldn't recomend spending more than five dollars on this BNL item.

5 out of 5 stars Hells yeah!.......2006-04-15

Please disregard the below comment. From my experience, when people say something applies even to die-hard fans, it usually doesn't. I guarantee the person below is not a die-hard fan. How do I know? Because die-hard Barenaked Ladies fans breath, sleep, eat, drink, and poop Barenaked Ladies. Die-hard fans get a high from anything BnL. Even if they think something can be better, they never say anything negative about anything to do with the band. Even if it's not so great, die-hard fans will still be satisfied knowing they own more BnL. Of course this guy didn't like it, he's not a true fan, he can't appreciate it. I'm buying it, and I'm sure I'll love it.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy it!!.......2004-11-20

The back cover advertises live performances of several songs. What you get is an hour-long interview "set against" a few seconds of songs here and there. I don't recommend this, even for die-hard fans. The interview footage is just slapped together and isn't particularly interesting or informative. Spend a few extra dolllars and pick up their concert DVD or video compilation.

The Maltese Falcon
Still the tightest, sharpest, and most cynical of Hollywood's official deathless classics, bracingly tough even by post-Tarantino standards. Humphrey Bogart is Dashiell Hammett's definitive private eye, Sam Spade, struggling to keep his hard-boiled cool as the double-crosses pile up around his ankles. The plot, which dances all around the stolen Middle Eastern statuette of the title, is too baroque to try to follow, and it doesn't make a bit of difference. The dialogue, much of it lifted straight from Hammett, is delivered with whip-crack speed and sneering ferocity, as Bogie faces off against Peter Lorre and Sidney Greenstreet, fends off the duplicitous advances of Mary Astor, and roughs up a cringing "gunsel" played by Elisha Cook Jr. It's an action movie of sorts, at least by implication: the characters always seem keyed up, right on the verge of erupting into violence. This is a turning-point picture in several respects: John Huston (The African Queen) made his directorial debut here in 1941, and Bogart, who had mostly played bad guys, was a last-minute substitution for George Raft, who must have been kicking himself for years afterward. This is the role that made Bogart a star and established his trendsetting (and still influential) antihero persona. --David Chute

Casablanca
A truly perfect movie, Casablanca (1942) still wows viewers today, and for good reason. --Tom Keogh

The Big Sleep
Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall made screen history together more than once, but they were never more popular than in this 1946 adaptation of Raymond Chandler's novel, directed by Howard Hawks (To Have and Have Not). Bogart plays private eye Philip Marlowe, who is hired by a wealthy socialite (Bacall) to look into troubles stirred up by her wild, young sister (Martha Vickers). Legendarily complicated (so much so that even Chandler had trouble following the plot), the film is nonetheless hugely entertaining and atmospheric, an electrifying plunge into the exotica of detective fiction. William Faulkner wrote the screenplay. --Tom Keogh

Key Largo
John Huston directed this smart 1948 thriller about a gangster (Edward G. Robinson) who holds a number of people hostage in a hotel in the Florida Keys during a tropical storm. Humphrey Bogart is the returning war veteran who takes on the villains, and Lauren Bacall is on hand as one of the people on the wrong end of Robinson's gun. Somewhat similar in tone to Howard Hawks's To Have and Have Not (which also featured Bogart and Bacall), this moody movie captures a certain despair offset by the bond between individuals united by common purpose. Claire Trevor won an Academy Award for her part as Robinson's alcoholic girlfriend. --Tom Keogh

Description

A great giftset with four of Humphrey Bogart's most classic films. These include: The Big Sleep, Casablanca, Key Largo, and the Maltese Falcon.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars quintessential Bogie..........2007-06-01

A great collection for any Bogart lover. My 2 personal favorites are included in this package, Casablanca and Key Largo. The Big Sleep directed by Howard Hawks, with Bogie and Lauren Bacall is a film classic. The Maltese Falcon with an incredible cast including Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet and Ward Bond. Enjoy this incredible collection of four films that deserve to be placed on anyone's Top 100 list.

1 out of 5 stars Bogart collection.......2007-05-18

I thought the movies would be presented in their original format, however they appear in standard TV format. For those with widescreen TV's (like me)you will be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Bogart The Best.......2006-11-10

These are some of the best acting films of Bogart's career!, plus some of the finest supporting actors
you will ever find.

5 out of 5 stars Got more than i bargained for.......2006-08-25

I originally bought this set for Casablanca, and I wanted to get an idea for his other movies.

I got quite a lot more than i expected though... I learned that oldschool movies are just plain better than the new ones.

There may be many explanations for this, but the main differences I observed were different mannerisms/speech patterns, and more complicated plot-lines.

Maltese Falcon is a particularly wonderful story, much more complex than today's typical blockuster, and Big Sleep/Key Largo were classics in their own right.

5 out of 5 stars Bogart collection .......2006-08-21

Great mix of a classic actor with some of the best leading ladies. I like the sets as they give a great value for my library of classic films.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best collection you can hope for........2006-10-06

You can't get a better combination of films from Bogart than this collection. True, 90 dollars is a bit extreme, but if you shop around and find it for a little less than it's a steal. For instance I just purchased this same collection at Costco for 65 dollars. All releases are good, any problems with Maltese Falcon or Big Sleep is nay unrecognizable from my standpoint. One of the few collections I have ever seen that has actually made a conscious effort to pit together truly the best films from a given actor.

4 out of 5 stars It would have been perfect with African Queen.......2005-03-12

This collection would have been awesome if only it included The African Queen...it definitely has 5 of his best movies, but with African Queen, you get the best 6 movies of his career in one single pack! Now that, I would call his signature collection.

This is not bad though. Most of the so-called signature collections have so-so movines mixed with good ones. At least all the movies in this set are great gems. All 5 movies are very important movies of probably the greatest actor of Hollywood, 3 of the movies make AFI top 100 list (Cassablanca at #2, Maltese Falcon and Treasure of Sierra Madre, both in top 30) and the rest of the 2 are real close and are considered the part of classic film-noir. So if you don't mind spending 80 bucks for 5 DVDs and love the classic golden age of Hollywood, go for it.

5 out of 5 stars THERE IS NO DELETED SCENE IN THE MALTESE FALCON.......2004-10-21

There are no scenes deleted in The Maltese Falcon dvd. This patron also posted for TMF dvd itself. I quote: 'The deleted scene is the one whereby Lorre is given back his gun by Bogart, lorre then points it at Bogart yet again-and the dvd fades to black to prepare for the next scene. What is deleted is Bogart laughing at Lorre and saying "Go right ahead (laugh, laugh), You go right ahead" THEN fade to black.' That scene is most definitely in there. I just watched it to check.

This dvd set features five ESSENTIAL Bogart films. It's true that The Big Sleep, To Have And Have Not, and The Maltese Falcon could all do with some restoration --but I'd say that the flaws don't detract that much from the films themselves, and until that day comes this set is a must for the Bogart fan.

Humphrey Bogart is still considered by many to be the greatest movie star of all time. These five films are a brilliant testament as to why. I advise you to score.

3 out of 5 stars Good collection, but wait.......2003-12-13

All good movies, of course. Maltese Falcon and Big Sleep editions will probably be re-released as two disc sets in the future, the current dvd of Maltese Falcon has a messy look to it, and also has a missing scene ( inexcusable, really).

I would wait on this collection. Get Treasure and Casablanca two disc sets, individually, they are fan tastic...

A Night in Casablanca may not qualify as a Marx Brothers classic, but it's certainly the best of their latter-day comedies. "This picture is funnier than all but a handful of their earlier ones," wrote the usually cantankerous Pauline Kael, and she's right. The Big Store would have been the final Marx movie, but that disappointment, and an attractive new deal with United Artists, prompted the Marx trio to bring freshly anarchic energy to this post-war spoof of wartime intrigue, prompting Warner Bros. (producers of Casablanca) to threaten legal action over the title, to which Groucho responded, "I am sure that the average movie fan could learn in time to distinguish between Ingrid Bergman and Harpo." As it happens, Night bears only passing resemblance to the Bergman/Bogart classic, with Groucho playing the new manager of a hotel in Casablanca, where several previous managers have been murdered while a scheming villain (Marx regular Sig Rumann) plots to steal the hotel's cache of Nazi treasure. Chico and Harpo are up to their usual antics (including piano and harp interludes, respectively), and they all give Rumann the runaround in the film's funniest and most perfectly choreographed scene. The brothers made their final film together with Love Happy three years later, but as any fan will tell you, A Night in Casablanca was the last Marx comedy that mattered. --Jeff Shannon

Beatrice Rheiner: I shall be in the Supper Club.
Ronald Kornblow: The Supper Club?
Beatrice Rheiner: Yes. Will you join me?
Ronald Kornblow: Why? Are you coming apart?

The Marx Brothers remain one of the greatest comedy teams the world ever had; and they work hard in this film to keep their reputation. A Night In Casablanca holds your attention and the comedy remains worthy of all five stars. Lisette Verea shines as the Nazi femme fatale in on the plot to transport Nazi loot to a place where the former Allies forces could never reach it; and Sig Ruman turns in a very convincing performance as the inept Nazi spy who couldn't get hi
