Amazon.com essential video
One of Greta Garbo's touchstone films, this 1937 adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas novel finds the actress playing a dying courtesan who falls in love with a young nobleman (a slightly miscast Robert Taylor) and must sacrifice her happiness. Directed by George Cukor (The Philadelphia Story), the supreme "women's director" in Hollywood at the time, the film could have existed just to give Garbo room to be luminous (despite her character's illness) and a great star. But it is also a gorgeous MGM production with strong performances from Lionel Barrymore and the rest of the cast. (Henry Daniell is a standout as the villain.) --Tom Keogh
Description
Life in 1847 Paris is as spirited as champagne and as unforgiving as the gray morning after. In gambling dens and lavish soirees, men of means exert their wills and women turned courtesans exult in pleasure. One such woman is Marguerite Gautier (Greta Garbo), the Camille of this sumptuous romance tale based on the enduring Alexandre Dumas story. Garbo's aloof mystique and alabaster beauty illuminate this George Cukor-directed film featuring what many call her finest performance. Her Camille is a movie paragon of true love found (in suitor Armand Duval, memorably played by Robert Taylor), then sacrificed for a greater good. Garbo earned an Academy Award nomination and the New York Film Critics Best Actress Award for her memorable work.

The venerable science fiction program Doctor Who returned to British televisions in 2005 after a 15-year absence and delighted the majority of fans and critics with its adherence to the adventure and charm of the original series while making admissions for a new generation of viewers (hipper editing and score, CGI effects). Thirteen episodes were generated, all starring Christopher Eccleston as the ninth Doctor and pop-singer-turned-actress Billie Piper as his companion Rose; acclaimed writer/producer Russell T. Davies (Touching Evil, Queer as Folk) oversaw the show as chief writer and executive producer. The new series proved so popular that the BBC agreed to revive the program for second and third seasons--though without Eccleston, who has since been replaced by David Tennant. This six-disc set comes with all 13 episodes plus the battery of supplemental features now customary to all Doctor Who DVD releases.

Eccleston is very engaging in the title role, bringing a manic curiosity tempered by occasional bouts of gravity (which befit a personality with a long and dramatic a lifespan as the Doctor's) that hew closely to the (arguably) most popular Doctor, Tom Baker. Piper is equally adept as department store clerk Rose--she's afforded more of a back story than most of the Doctor's sidekicks have received in the past, and she more than handles her own alongside Eccleston. Highlights among the 13 episodes include the season opener, "Rose" (which sees the return of an old foe, the Autons, and their controlling force, the Nestene Consciousness); the revamped Daleks in "Dalek" and the two-parter "Bad Wolf" and "The Parting of the Ways"; a trip to Victorian England to aid Charles Dickens in "The Unquiet Dead," and of course, the arrival of the tenth Doctor at the conclusion of the action-packed "Parting of the Ways." The episodes strike the right blend of quirk, excitement, and imagination, thanks largely to the engaging performances and the guidance of Davies, whose admiration for the show and its history is evident throughout.

Supplemental features--and there are many--including commentary on all 13 episodes by members of the cast and crew, including Piper and Davies; numerous making-of featurettes, including a profile of Davies; a video diary by Piper; an interview with Eccleston, and best of all, a glimpse at the 60-minute Christmas special, "The Christmas Invasion," which picks up where the series concludes. Who fans won't be disappointed. --Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars Christopher Eccleston is the DOCTOR!.......2007-07-03

The new Doctor Who series has a bigger budget and better writing than the past generations and it's tons of fun! Christopher Eccleston in the 1st series as the Doctor is FANTASTIC. Great action packed stories that are lots of fun to watch. If you never understood the British cult of Doctor Who previously, this new series will hook you.

In the second series, David Tennant's Doctor is just a bit melodramtic nutsy with a tinge of mushy humanism (a few too many diatribes about the magnificance of the human race). But still worth watching!

4 out of 5 stars Not at all what I remembered!.......2007-07-03

I passionately hated Dr. Who when I was a kid growing up in the mid-80's. I just didn't understand why anyone would like it. Couldn't even stand to listen to the theme music 'cause it freaked me out so badly! I've never been a huge fan of science fiction either. (Harry Potter books are one of only a very few exceptions to this rule.)

However, when my local PBS station (which I LOVE) started airing episodes from this new series, I figured I'd give it another try. SO worth it! The writing, acting, special effects, directing...EVERYTHING about it is excellent, and it's such an intelligent, thought-provoking show which makes you feel so many different emotions!

If one episode alone could completely change my opinion, how much do you think YOU would enjoy it? :-)

Yes, I'm an adult now and can tolerate scary TV much better than I used to, but I will admit that sections of some episodes still frighten me. (Great episode, but "Empty Child" sent shivers down my spine every time I heard this little voice call out, "Mummy. Mummy. Are you my mummy?") I like to watch this series with all the lights on and the dog curled up with me. Each episode sticks with me, and I always hope that it won't give me nightmares!

4 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-06-03

This show is sooo great and I love watching, it is great for the whole family because it has slap stick comedy and you will want to watch it over again.

5 out of 5 stars The Doctor is back!.......2007-05-30

I have to admit, I grew up watching Dr. Who, and when I found out that Dr. Who was back I was excited and yet really not expecting much. I mean remakes are never that good... right? Boy, am I glad to be wrong! This was so cool. Everything that made Dr. Who awesome before is still there. (with the exception of the longer storylines, which I loved) Eccleson is the best Dr. yet! If you've ever seen Dr. Who, you'll love this and if you've never seen it... get ready to be hooked. You'll want to watch it over and over again. :)

5 out of 5 stars Blown away by these amazing DVDs.......2007-05-25

Never having been exposed to Doctor Who before I am just in awe of the fine writing and production values that this series brings. The acting of Christopher Eccleston is Emmy worthy. These DVDs are a must for any fan of science fiction or any H.G. Wells afficionado. Just brillant in all respects.

2 out of 5 stars Not quite funny, entertaining, or clever enough.......2007-06-05

Besides the opening and ending scenes, this movie is full of mediocre one-liners and wacky antics that just aren't funny enough to warrant an hour and a half of your life. That, along with the meaningless story line, leaves very little to redeem this movie. Don't waste your time unless this is your flavor of humor.

3 out of 5 stars Wishy Washy .......2007-05-28

I rated this as "wishy washy" because I would never recommend this movie to someone who I didn't know had an affinity for gratuitous humor. However, I would definitely show the first fifteen minutes to anyone who enjoys spoof hilarity. The first fifteen are probably the most hilarious I have ever viewed. Even my husband, who might be considered more prudish than myself, enjoyed the initial part of this movie. It is too bad they couldn't keep it up. Instead they filled the movie with such humor to be had in a bad Adam Sandler film or Reno 911.

5 out of 5 stars FUNNY FUNNY FUNNY!.......2007-05-14

I'm sorry......but I'm into REALLY funny movies, and this one takes the cake! There's more catch phrases and one-liners to use out of this movie than any other one I've ever watched. Its a GOTTA HAVE.

3 out of 5 stars super troopers dvd.......2007-05-13

This is a great movie, but you might like to mention in future sales of dvd's that if it comes from the USA, it's unlikely to play on dvd players in other countries because of zoning restrictions on US dvds.
However, it will play on pcs and laptops, so all is not lost.

    5 out of 5 stars Am I saying "meow"?.......2007-04-17

One of the funniest and most quotable movies ever made. No exaggeration. If you like inappropriate humor, clever banter, and the F word, you'll love this movie. I will be embarassing my future grandchildren many decades from now by watching this movie as frequently as possible. It's that good.

3 out of 5 stars It didnt suprise me.......2007-06-19

I was afraid to watch this one for a long time considering what i heard of it. The plot is simple, some writer lady goes to the country and ends up being raped and assaulted by 4 ignorant backwoods types then one when one of them dosent go through with the job of 'taking care of her' she comes back for revenge. It was sick, yes, It was you can say brutal in a way, but i can see something like this happening. I mean it didnt shock me considering ive actually met people like this that were maybe a couple inches away from doin something like that. Theres 2 types of people, normal good people and people that are a couple inches away from doing something sick like this. A bunch of guys gettin together, real ignorant types and then pullin something like this, yea, i can see it. The stupidity of one of them made me sick. He was like just doing whatever he was told. Then came 'the revenge'. Plain and simple, not much else. I cant say i could see someone really 'enjoying' watching this but i cant say it was so bad i wouldnt tell you not to see it. I dont think a normal person would have much interest in this one. People who love horror? maybe. Its a hit or miss.

    4 out of 5 stars Classic Nastie!.......2007-05-02

"Spit" is one of my all time favourite little "nasties".
It's sick alright and still very disturbing, even though it was made way back in 1978. Ok, it's low, low budget, but that's why it works.
The film's lack of music throughout makes it all the more off putting.
Camille Keaton, as the victim, is an absolute trouper.
    Rodney, is Gold.

This Millennium Edition of "Spit" is something my brother and I used to joke about. Ever since we first caught "Spit" at the Drive In on it's original release, the idea of a special edition of "Spit" was something we only ever dreamt of one day owning.
To have it like this, THX Certified Transfer, Dolby Digital/DTS 5.1, looking and sounding like it was made yesterday, with extras laid on, you've got to be kidding.
And that cover ain't half bad either....hey?

    Warning:Definately not for the kiddies.

4 out of 5 stars NOT AS BAD AS WHAT EVERYONE SAYS !!!!!.......2007-03-30

I bought this movie because I was intrigued by it. The cinematography is incredible. Visually, it is stunning. The rape scenes ARE savage, but I was touched by the emotional devastation the actress was able to convey. As a woman I was rooting for the heroine and I must admit I was a little disappointed in the ease with which she dispatched three of her assailants. Her revenge on Matthew was "OK" but I would have liked to have seen a little blood and gore. When I first saw the bathtub scene between the heroine and Johnny I was a little nauseated by all the blood but I couldn't help but laugh at the way she dispatched him. I watched the movie again and I thought it would have been even more visually effective if after the slice and dice she would have raised her hand from out of the bath water holding a semblance of bloody genitalia in her hand. But this movie was made in a decade that never would have allowed that. The heroine's numb composure throughout the revenge sequences is fully understandable (that is, if you're a woman). Kudos to Ms. Keaton for a very persuasive acting job.

    1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2007-03-14

Maybe the WORST movie ever made, or at least the worst that I have seen. Don't waste you're money or time.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best.......2007-02-26

This movie is great. Artistic in a sick way. Sort of has a feminist flavor too it, but in a cool way. Definently a morality message underneath. also, Theres a classic scene that will traumatize any man who watches this film.

Valley Girl is, like--Omigod!--one of the most "tubular" teen comedies of the early 1980s. This movie launched Nicolas Cage's career, and it's easy to see why: Following his tiny role in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Cage is perfectly cast as a Hollywood punk who instantly falls for Julie (the irresistible Deborah Foreman), a San Fernando "Valley Girl"--a brighter variant of the stereotype immortalized in Moon Unit Zappa's 1982 novelty song--who must choose between wild-boy Nic and her preening jock boyfriend (Mark Bowen). Fortunately, Julie knows what's right for her (even if her "Val" friends don't), and in refreshing defiance of teen-flick tradition, her post-hippie parents (Frederic Forrest, Colleen Camp) are supportively cool. With sincere humor, a lively soundtrack of '80s hits, and a time-capsule cruise of Hollywood landmarks, Valley Girl is both timeless and nostalgic, owing much of its lasting appeal to Martha Coolidge's sensitive direction. Fer sure, y'know, it definitely won't gag you with a spoon. --Jeff Shannon

    Description

Julie's cool, Randy's hot. She's from the Valley, he's like'so not! Nicolas Cage and Deborah Foreman star in this "sweet, fast, unpretentious [and] funny" (Los Angeles Times) romance that mixes preppies, punkers and a "hit-filled soundtrack" (The New York Times)including The Plimsouls and Modern Englishinto an iconic cult film that's "entertaining" (New York)'to the max! Julie is, like, so over her preppy boyfriend, she dumps him on the escalator at the Galleria. And when she meets punker Randy, her eyes practically bug out because she thinks he's sexy even though he makes her friends gag! But even if Randy's ready to stop the world and melt with her, can Julie risk her losing her friends and her super-popularity at school just to be with him?

IT WAS SPECTACULAR..I LOVED THIS MOVIE AND I AM GLAD I WAS ABLE TO FIND IT HERE,..THANK YOU AMAZON

4 out of 5 stars Light and fluffy.......2007-03-07

(3.5/5 stars) It is amazing how many of the words and phrases from this film have become a normalized part of the vernacular. "Awesome" is one obvious example, and it is difficult to imagine teenagers today conversing without the use of "Like," where it is not used to connote "similarity." At the time of its release, these were rather novel. This film does have a good soundtrack and it is a pretty decent love story of a popular, middle class girl, who falls for a boy from the wrong side of the tracks. In the title role, Deborah Foreman is quite irresistible. Nicolas Cage is fine as the rough-hewn Randy, though he is never very believable as the favorite son of his tough neighborhood. It is embarrassing to the point of laughter as he interacts with his homeboys during a cruise through his neighborhood. Another aspect that does not ring true is some of the dialogue. A prime example of this is the conversation among Randy, Julie, Tommy and Stacie at the club in Hollywood, where they sit down and immediately begin discussing their statuses and degrees of authenticity. Not only is it not convincing in its content, the transition to it is non-existent. Gripes aside, this is not a bad film. However, I would not go so far as to say it is great either. As a comedy, it isn't very funny. As a romance, their love seems to be based on physical attributes rather than commonalities and, as such, not very compelling. Nonetheless, Elizabeth Daily is always a delight, and her role here makes this a must for fans. Also, the DVD transfer, 5.1 channel mix effort both widescreen and full screen versions are worth an extra ½ star.

5 out of 5 stars Like Oh My God! This movie is totally Bitchin'!.......2007-02-22

The Popular `80s teen film "Valley Girl" based on Frank Zappa's Novelty Song of the same title, popularized the image of the "Valley girl". A Valley Girl usually referred to girls from The San Fernando Valley in California. This type of girl usually dressed in preppy colorful clothes, had their own slang terms, cared about their social status, and usually had money. In 1983 Valley Girl, the movie was released, and became a cult status film, depicting the Valley Girl lifestyle. The movie stars Deborah Foreman, as Julie Richman, a popular, preppy girl from the San Fernando Valley, and Nicolas Cage as Randy, a young punk from Hollywood. After dumping her preppy, good-looking boyfriend, Julie attends one of her friends parties and ends up meeting Randy, even though they are from 2 different worlds, these two show that opposites do attract and instantly become an item. Even though her parents are cool with their relationship, her friends aren't, and pressure Julie into dumping him, so she can get back with her Ex. This film is not only great, but has an incredible soundtrack, with so many great New Wave hits. Watch for musical appearances by The Plimsouls, and Josie Cotton in this film as well. For those of you who were around when this film came out will probably view it with nostalgia, as for those of us who weren't will love looking at the awesome fads, trends, and listening to the great music. Overall this film is like totally trepindicular, fer Sure!

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding 80's youth movie!.......2007-02-05

It really seems to be a trend to look back on past decades and ridicule just about everything that has "come before". It makes me laugh that people are so smug to think that the "present" is perfect. Well, I have news for you. The present is far from perfect and there's a whole lot about the past that was MUCH better than it is today. The movie "Valley Girl" is a wonderful example of how COOL the early 80's were!

I won't offer a review of the film itself, because that's already been done by much better reviewers than myself. I will simply say that this is a great youth movie from a very positive time in America. It's always great to be young... but it was TOTALLY AWESOME to be young in the early 80's!

The DVD features a great transfer with a few nifty "extras" (80's trivia track and audio commentary by director Martha Coolidge). As noted by a few other reviewers, a few of the songs have been removed from the film (and this is not noted anywhere on the DVD package). Also, for some reason the sound was remixed and some of the music has been placed in the "background" when it was originally quite loud and "up front". Since the music is such an integral part of this film it's a shame that it has been altered in any way.

    Remember:

If you should ever find yourself making fun of 80's fashions or haircuts just put Valley Girl in your DVD player so that you can be reminded of how FUN and COOL that time really was. Those who truly understand what the 80's were all about make no apologies and have no regrets. The 80's were a TOTAL blast, and Valley Girl is a wonderful testament to that fact!

    Description

In the classic tradition of Disney's animated feature films, the first Winnie The Pooh theatrical feature in 23 years weaves magical storytelling, charming characters, and memorable songs into an enchanting tale of adventure and heart. As it happens, the whole gang is busy preparing a suitably gloomy winter home for Eeyore. When everything they do seems to get undone by Tigger's exuberant bouncing, Rabbit suggests Tigger go outside and find other tiggers to bounce with -- a notion Tigger finds ridiculous because after all, he's "the onliest one!" Or is he? And so begins Tigger's amazing journey to find his family. This whimsical and touching film will bounce right into your heart -- and feet.

    4 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-05-13

My daughter likes this movie but not as much as the Piglet or Heffalump movies, but definitely worth the money if your child enjoys the Pooh characters.

    1 out of 5 stars What's up with Disney?.......2006-07-01

I found this movie very disappointing. It was so full of low-level slapstick violence that it felt more like a warner brother's cartoon than a Winnie the Pooh Movie. While the story was a sweet message, Eeyore's home being smashed by a rock and roo crashing into closets concerned my two year old deeply. What happened to a great storyline without the bells and whistles of violence to move it along? I'll stick to the Blustery Day. Once again, Disney gets a D-.

5 out of 5 stars My Daughter loves it........2005-10-17

My little one loves Pooh's movies and couldnt be happier seeing her dance and jump with them.... awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie for the family.......2005-10-16

This movie has entertained my kids, now 3 and 5, for a couple of years, so I bought is as a gift for my nephew. A cute movie with a great message, The Tigger Movie is a favorite in our house.

    4 out of 5 stars Cute Movie. . ........2005-10-08

My son loves all the pooh movies, this one included. Cute addition to the collection.

A stellar cast buoys Neverwas, a 2005 feature written and directed by Joshua Michael Stern. And what a lineup it is. Aaron Eckhart stars as Zach, a psychiatrist who abandons his cushy gig at Cornell in order to work at a funky, underfunded New England institution run by Dr. Peter Reed (an underused William Hurt), where his own father (Nick Nolte, seen in various flashbacks), who wrote the wildly popular children's book named in the title but was also a manic depressive, was briefly ensconced before killing himself, leaving his young son burdened with the grim memory of finding the body. Ian McKellen is Gabriel, a patient at the nuthouse in question who knows a good deal more about Zach's dad than Zach does; Jessica Lange is his boozy, annoying mother; Brittany Murphy is his love interest; and other patients include Michael Moriarty, The Departed's Vera Farmiga, and Bill Bellamy. Their respective agents must have had a field day determining the billing order, but Neverwas, which bears a passing resemblance to Finding Neverland and The Fisher King, doesn't seem to know what kind of picture it wants to be. It's not family fare, as themes like suicide and mental illness are too dark and complex for kids. It's not a romance, nor is it a fantasy, a father-son drama, or an adventure. Not that it doesn't have its strong points: McKellen lights up the screen every time he appears on it, the cinematography is often quite lovely, and the overall notion of life and art as a circular form, as in Zach's having to figure out how he fit into both his dad's book (the hero is a boy named Zachary) and his real life, is intriguing. On balance, however, Neverwas is a whole that is disappointingly less than the sum of its parts. --Sam Graham

    Description

Weaving together fantasy and reality, past and present, Neverwas is the enchantment-filled, life-affirming tale about a young man (Aaron Eckhart) who finds out his childhood fantasyland may really exist. Searching for insight into his father's (Nick Nolte) life and the magical place he wrote about in the beloved children's book, Neverwas, psychiatrist Zach Riley (Eckhart) takes a job at the institution where he lived on and off. Once there, Zach meets Gabriel (Sir Ian McKellen), a patient whose alternate reality is startlingly close to the world his father created. Featuring a critically acclaimed all-star cast that also includes William Hurt, Jessica Lange and Brittany Murphy, Neverwas is a magical and moving journey of discovery you won't soon forget.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Stellar cast can't enliven this dull film.......2007-07-03

It is amazing that a first-rate cast (Aaron Eckhart, Ian McKellen, William Hurt, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, Britney Murphy, Alan Cumming, and an interesting premise on paper can turn out to be such a sleep-inducing film, but "Neverwas" is just that. The film was made in 2005 and never got a commercial release and was eventually shown on a cable network. Eckhart plays a psychiatrist who accepts a position at a mental institution where his father committed suicide. There, he reconnects with friends from his childhood as well as a patient (McKellen) who knew his father well and helps Eckhart undercover buried secrets, among them the secret fantasy world that his father created in a popular book. The film has a colorful visual style but it is not enough to bring any interest to this terribly boring film. Eckhart and McKellen are fine in their roles but actors like Jessica Lange, William Hurt and Alan Cumming are wasted.

Though it seems like a one-joke premise, this spinoff of Al Franken's Saturday Night Live character, self-help nerd Stuart Smalley, actually has some substance. And, in fact, it offers a message that wouldn't be out of place at an Al-Anon meeting (although with the laughs). Stuart, fired from his cable TV self-help show, goes home to resolve a family crisis. Dad (Harris Yulin) is an abusive drunk, Mom (Shirley Knight) is an enabler, Sis is an over-eater, and Brother has a problem with his temper. The film turns serious, but Franken actually makes the drama interesting, using humor to leaven it. And he brings a certain sympathy and resolve to the lisping, cross-eyed Stuart. To be sure, it's not your typical SNL movie. --Marshall Fine

3 out of 5 stars Funny- if you have nothing better to do.......2007-02-01

This was a funny movie. Probably not one of the funniest SNL movies, but better than SUPERSTAR. It would have been even better if Al Franken had not become AL FRANKEN since it came out. Even with his real life aside, it still made me laugh and I applaud his performance.

4 out of 5 stars Every bit as funny as I remembered!.......2007-01-06

This movie deserves to be a comedy cult classic. The Smalley family is as familiar as, well, your own, and the way the movie reveals their dysfunction is pitch perfect. Team up lively writing, a great cast, and the right balance of heartwarming and sarcastic humor, and you have Stuart Saves His Family.

1 out of 5 stars God Awful piece of junk. Avoid at all costs........2006-05-12

This was one of the worst bad crappy movies I've seen. Al Franken falls flat on his face in this one. I found none of the jokes funny and it was one of those squeeze a buck out of a character SNL movies. Franken is funny on SNL and Stuart actually made me laugh on the show but this movie was travesty of the first rate. Like I said there is good crappy movies which I watch like Plan 9 from Outer Space, Flash Gordon, the Monster Squad, and the like that are bad films but pieces of art that make you laugh and entertain you. This movie was not one of them. If you think I'm some right wing red neck out to get Franken your dead wrong I'm far from it although I do find this up tight new air america Franken annoying though. The point is not his politics but this stupid waste of Hollywood money on this garbage that isn't funny or entertaining at all. In fact half way through it my ex girl friend had to wake me up because my head was starting hurt her shoulder. Forget this movie if you want a good crappy movie watch "Killer Klowns from Outer Space." Trust me its the best thing to do.

5 out of 5 stars Stuart is the best!.......2006-03-17

This has to be one of the absolute best movies I have ever seen! Al Frankin is genious! I am so excited he is from Minnesota and I hope fulheartedly he intends on running for United States Senator from our state. He will not only have my vote but I will work on his campaign! Go, Al!

5 out of 5 stars I AM REBORN IN THIS FILM'S GENIUS. I SAW GOD AND HE SAID "YOU ARE A WONDROUS CREATION".......2006-01-10

As brilliant as they come. Step aside Charleton Heston. A new dramatic king is in town and his name is Stuart!!!!!!!

The blitz-bombing of London in World War II provides the serious backdrop for the uplifting entertainment of Mrs. Henderson Presents, a delightful British comedy anchored by the flawless performances of Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins. After losing a son in World War I, and becoming a widow in 1937, the wealthy and respectable Mrs. Henderson (Dench) decides that the best way to support soldiers going off to battle is to give them a wartime send-off they'll never forget. Thus, she buys and renovates the Windmill Theater in London's Soho district, hires Mr. Vivian Van Damm (Hoskins) as the impresario of an all-day musical variety show called "Revudeville," and secures permission from the censorious Lord Cromer (Christopher Guest) to include naked women in the stage show - on the condition that the ladies remain still onstage to qualify as "art," like nude portraits in a gallery, with the "foliage" of their "midlands" discreetly obscured. "Revudeville" is an instant hit, British propriety remains tastefully intact, and as The Windmill's fortunes rise, fall, and rise again, Mrs. Henderson Presents develops an emotional depth and good-natured nobility that's perfectly matched to the comedy of tweaking British manners. Working from an eloquently witty, fact-based screenplay by Martin Sherman, director Stephen Frears (High Fidelity) brings out the best in a well-chosen cast, and Andrew Dunn's cinematography (enhanced by judicious use of digital effects to show the London blitz in progress) casts a warm, inviting glow over this winning tale of show-biz tenacity in the best and worst of times. --Jeff Shannon

I love Judy Dench. She is one of the best actors of this time. If you want a good entertaining film and are not uptight about nudity then this is a must see movie! Wish I could give it more than 5 stars.

    4 out of 5 stars Rather entertaining........2007-06-07

I have to say that movie was rather entertaining with dance numbers, singing, and even a tragedy. Kelly Reilly is stunning as Maureen. She does a terrific job; I hope to see her more.

4 out of 5 stars Laura Henderson: "We've had some good shows, but they're not daring enough. Let's get rid of the clothes.".......2007-04-28

A wealthy widow, Mrs. Laura Henderson (Judi Dench) buys an old London theater and comes up with the brilliant idea to turn it in a performance hall with the non-stop shows featuring nude girls during World War II. Bob Hoskins plays Vivian Van Damm, her business partner, who is as stubborn and opinionated as she is but somehow they manage to stay friends and to maintain the respect and admiration for each other. I liked this little movie very much. It's a well crafted dramedy with nice musical numbers, nudity, touching story, and it is based on the real events. Dench and Hoskins are marvelous together.

5 out of 5 stars DVD does tremendous justice to this magnificent film.......2007-03-23

I loved this film in the theatre and must say that the DVD Widescreen transfer with all of the extras(including the ORIGINAL Windmill girls!-and a very good commentary by the director) is a must have in your library. What a shame that this wonderfully clever and extremely well acted and directed (Stephen Frears,THE QUEEN) had such a limited release in the arthouses. The musical stage numbers are outstanding and every bit as good as any of the recent musicals since CHICAGO.This film assembles absolutely the creme dela creme of British stage, cinema(Dench and Hoskins) and even Pop star Will Young and American "nut" Christopher Guest, to bring to life a VERY interesting piece of theatre history in London. For the price of this DVD you simply can't go wrong!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Very witty.......2007-03-04

A sassy widow flounders to fill her time soon after her husband's funeral. She has plenty of money, so she goes way out on a limb and purchases an old theatre in London in need of restoration and a radical manager with brilliant ideas. Mrs. Henderson and Mr. Van Dam (her manager) try risky productions to keep the theatre fresh and popular. Based on true events, this film is a one of a kind story with unforgettable performances by extremely gifted actors. Well done!

"Miss Claudel has become a master."
"She has the talent of a man."
    "She's a witch."

And so Auguste Rodin and friends neatly sum up the sad trajectory of Camille Claudel's career.

We first meet the sculptor as she digs clay with bare fingers from a frozen ditch, in the winter of 1885. By the time the film leaves her, in 1913, she's an acclaimed, if socially scorned, artist who's been committed to an asylum.

In the interim, Claudel (Isabelle Adjani) falls in love with the famous, older, womanizing Rodin (Gérard Depardieu). Claudel abandons her work to assist the creatively bankrupt Rodin, filling in as his muse, assistant, and lover. When pregnancy forces Claudel to ask him to choose between her and his longtime mistress, he won't, she leaves, and their alliance ends. This proves to be the turning point for Claudel's mental health; when her affair with Rodin ends, she begins her intimacy with insanity.

As her madness blooms, so do her long-neglected sculptures, which seem to come to life in her hands and arms. Not only a potent love story, Camille Claudel is also an account of art and its wellsprings, and this is where it excels, especially when we witness Claudel's manic genius at work, driven by the necessity to externalize her emotions in the forms of her sculptures.

In the end, the viewer wonders about the causes of Claudel's madness: was it genes, or her reaction against society's mores, or the product of Rodin's persecution? Or, as one exasperated family member terms it, was it "the madness of mud"? --Stefanie Durbin

Perhaps the only sculpture movie I ever saw. Very French. She finally looses her mind at the end. Much angst.

5 out of 5 stars great movie for lovers of sculpture and Rodin.......2007-01-19

The famous Rodin! Not many know the story of his misstres Camille who had a profound effect on his work. Very accurate factually, famous quotes by the man throughout. An emotional film in its own right. Rare and not available on DVD in Australia. Not your typical hollywood film and all the better for it. Great to see real plaster casts and bronzes of his original work used as props. Casting was superb.

5 out of 5 stars Camille Claudel the movie.......2007-01-04

Great Artsy passionate story of the lady behind Rodin, an equally good sculptor, who positively influenced the art and productiviity of one of the world's best known sculptors.

    5 out of 5 stars Camille Claudel.......2006-03-08

First saw this film in 1989 when it came out. Purchased this copy after the Detroit Institute of Arts Claudel/Rodin exhibit. Beautifully filmed. Poignant portrayal of Auguste Rodin and Camille Claudel's tumultuous relationship as artist and protege. Adjani and Depardieu, as well as everyone else give powerful performances. Film dwells more on the sensuality and subsequent madness of the relationship and doesn't focus on the fact that they eventually considered themselves equals in their art, how strongly they influenced each other and how much they actually worked together. Still a good buy and well worth multiple viewings.

5 out of 5 stars "Camille Claudel" a splendid film.......2006-02-20

This study of the intertwined lives of the sculptor Rodin and the artist who loved him with a fatal passion is quite extraordinary. Long a student of modern art, I learned a great deal from this film that had been unknown to me before. Furthermore the film is compelling as a work of art itself, and enormously important to the on-going study of women artists.

This is a work all admirers of modern art should view.

Creepshow 3 revives the venerable horror anthology feature with a quintet of grisly stories aimed at the splatter audience and those who recall the original film (which was helmed by George Romero and written by Stephen King) and its sequel with fondness. Unfortunately, neither Romero nor King are involved with this film, which was written and directed by low-budget filmmakers Anna Clavell and James Glenn Dudelson, whose previous efforts include an in-name-only sequel of Romero's Day of the Dead. Clavell and Dudelson have also jettisoned any connection to '50s horror comics like Tales from the Crypt (which lent the original Creepshow much of its ghoulish style and verve), though there are a few odd moments of CGI animation that serve as framing devices. The stories are suitably bloody--a serial-killer prostitute meets a client with a horrible secret in "Call Girl"; a pair of students takes a hands-on approach to discovering whether their former professor's new bride is human or mechanical in "The Professor's Wife"; and a new TV remote wreaks havoc on the mind and body of a bratty schoolgirl in "Alice"--but lack any sense of suspense or, in several cases, coherence (the black humor of the '50s comics is sorely missed too). And with no real name actors on hand (save Eileen Dietz, the face of Pazuzu from The Exorcist), flat, unimpressive direction, and hit-and-miss special effects, it's difficult to imagine horror fans flocking to Creepshow 3 like they did to its predecessors. -- Paul Gaita

    Description

This third installment in the George Romero/Stephen King-launched anthology series features five new tales of horror and a wraparound. 1 out of 5 stars Unimaginably bad.......2007-07-01

The original Creepshow was a surprise smash thanks to the teaming of legendary horror director George Romero and author Stephen King. Naturally, it spawned a sequel that ultimately failed to live up to the original, but it was nowhere near as bad as what we have here. Creepshow 3 is the third entry in the series in name only, as it is brought to us by the same crew that brought us the direct to DVD Day of the Dead 2: Contagium. Reading the previous sentence alone will tell you everything you need to know about Creepshow 3 in regards to checking it out, which if you were lucky enough not to see Day of the Dead 2, you should avoid this as well. The only thing Creepshow 3 really has in common with the previous films are by featuring multiple stories that get tied together, along with some lame CGI-rendered comic book style frames here and there as well. The acting throughout is horrible beyond belief, and saying that the stories themselves are lame is saying it lightly. The gore effects stink, and the tepid, uninspired direction makes a guy like Uwe Boll look like Martin Scorsese. Yes, it's that bad, and like Day of the Dead 2 before it, it's completely unnecessary as well. I enjoy horror anthologies as much as the next horror fan, so let's hope the next time someone wants to make one that they have some kind of talent, and don't torture us with crud like this. Avoid.

1 out of 5 stars TRASH IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD!.......2007-06-30

CREEPSHOW 3 IS A DISGRACE TO THE OTHER TWO INSTALLMENTS IN THE SERIES!
THIS IS NOT A CREEPSHOW...BUT A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME!

    1 out of 5 stars Creepshow?.......2007-06-27

This movie, creepshow 3, in NO WAY upholds the Creepshow franchise. It might actually be a good purchase, if it had a different name, on a F grade horror comedy dollar rack. It really feels like they just pasted this movie together in a few days. Very little about the stories makes any sense. Loads of uneventful situations and dialogue. There is maybe ten minutes of total film where ANYTHING is happening worth seeing. Some funny things, some well done special effects and makeup. Not worth any more than a few bucks. You should not be in any hurry to see this film. You are NOT missing out. It's a tragic addition to the Creepshow films. Please wait to buy it until it reaches below five or so dollars. People who make movies like this, and tag a name like Creepshow on it, should NOT be allowed cameras. Creepshow Creepshow 2 Creepshow 2 (Divimax Edition)

    5 out of 5 stars Classic B Horror.......2007-06-27

What an adorable mad professor. He made the show! Hope to see more of him in scary movies - you have to love the way he innocently deals with his rabbit, his bride, his vodoo kit!

1 out of 5 stars I wish amazon had a negative star rating........2007-06-25

Wouldn't it be nice if amazon had a NEGATIVE star? Like if say, a 5 star rating was Phillip Seymour Hoffman, this movie would be Nicole Richie.

Contact Amazon on that and I want 10% of whatever they make.

Anyway, Crapshow (I won't put the '3' because it has nothing to do with the original Creepshow's) is not just a horrible cash-in movie-- It's just a horrible movie. Everything about it is bad. The script, direction, acting, setting, and special effects are bad. Usually when someone is making a movie this awful, they know it. Deep down, that filmmaker know that their work is a worthless turd. From that point a movie is usually beefed up with some good gore, interesting kills, some T&A-- You know, SOMETHING to distract you from just how terrible the film you're watching is. But this movie offers nothing.

I've seen some bad movies. I've seen the worst movies in the world, in fact, but every one of them had SOMETHING to talk about. A funny line of dialouge, a good kill, a budget SO sad it was laughable. This film has nothing. You're left with a disgustingly inept film which almost wants to punish you for watching it!

"You're really so stupid as to watch ME? Wow, you're gonna pay for that one, bucko."
